Creston player chosen in WHL draft

Society’s tool library helps out small-scale farmers

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Goaltender Matt Armitage has become the first Creston player to be selected in the Western Hockey League draft. Armitage, 14, was chosen by the Spokane Chiefs in the fourth round of the draft held May 1. For the past year he has been attending Edge School for Athletes in Calgary, Alta., which offers education and athletics programs for many sports. His mother, Kim, and sister, Maya, moved to Calgary last year so Matt could accept a scholarship to attend Edge School. “I’ve basically been commuting for the last year,” said Matt’s father, Dave, a Columbia Brewery employee, who was also a goaltender and coach in the Creston Valley minor hockey program. “Matt was recruited by a few teams and his second year of bantam hockey was crucial for him to progress,” Dave said. “At 14, we decided he was too young to send away, so we moved our family to Calgary.” The proud dad says his son has had an exceptional year playing in a high level program. Matt had 23 wins and 13 losses in 2013-2014, putting up a 2.72 goalsagainst average and a 9.2 save percentage. He had five shutouts and was named the game’s most valuable player 11 times. BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor The word “library” brings to mind shelves of books, magazines and perhaps movies, but the one run by the Kootenay Local Agriculture Society (KLAS) is a bit different — it offers the rental of small-scale farming tools to the region’s farmers. “People don’t know this scale of equipment exists,” said Nigel Francis, who is co-ordinating the Creston library for the non-profit KLAS. “You can’t borrow it from your neighbour.” Part of the library’s purpose is to support beginning farmers, like Francis, with tool caches in Creston, Kaslo, Castlegar and Nelson. The key item in the library is an Italianmade BCS 853 walking tractor, which has a 13-horsepower engine and two wheels. A variety of implements can be attached, including a tiller, rotary plow and flail mower, and the Creston Valley library also offers a power harrow and fruit press/dehydrator. For KLAS members, the cost is $50 per day for the tractor and one implement. See TOOL, page 5 Creston Valley farmer Nigel Francis demonstrates the use of a BCS 853 walking tractor. Brian Lawrence

Physician recruiter earns provincial award BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The words read out when she was presented with a BC Community Achievement Award in Victoria on April 29 say it well: “The health of a community depends on many key elements, but primary is a stable physician base. Marilin States’ knowledge and expertise have made her the very successful physician recruiter for the Creston Valley. “As the Town of Creston mayor says, ‘Marilin has surpassed expectations in her creativity, adaptability and efficiency with limited resources to attract doctors to the area.’ Her success has been achieved through the relationships she has built locally and provincially. Marilin gives generously of her personal time to assist with the ongoing assimilation of new physicians and their families into the community. She is a great ambassador for the Creston Valley and her efforts have resulted in providing her community with stable medical care.” For her part, States said that she is still reeling over the honour. “To be in the midst of these people who have done so much for their communities was remarkable,” she said. “Each one is so inspiring. It’s wonderful what people do for their communities. It really does take a village — it takes the support of so many to accomplish what we do.” States was among 32 recipients named in 2014. high level and they understand what it’s like.” Perhaps the biggest change, he said, is in the level of competition. “Our school attracts elite players, the best from all over, so we are always competing against each other,” he said. “The travel can be pretty harsh, but the coaches are good at giving us time to rest.” His best experience to date was the tournament in Arizona. “It was really fun playing in a warm place. Minnesota was pretty cool. Actually, it was really cold!” His team won the Phoenix tournament and Matt was named the top goalie, a nice lead-in to last week’s draft. “When people asked me earlier in the year where I wanted to go in the WHL, I honestly said the Spokane

Matt will continue at Edge School next year, where he has received another scholarship. His sister has adapted well to the change in her life. “Maya is excited that she has so many opportunities,” Dave said. “She’s playing piano, in art classes and playing soccer, too. She is very supportive of her brother, which really makes it easier for Kim and I.” Matt said he hopes to be pulling on a Spokane Chiefs jersey in a few years, to play for a team that is in driving distance for Creston family and fans. “People in Creston have really supported me,” he said. “I’d love to be able to play junior hockey in front of them.”

She is a delivery room nurse who loves her work and is popular with colleagues. When we visited a month ago, I joked with her that she is either a very strong woman or in complete denial, having witnessed the most difficult of births in her years on the job. A quick glance at any of the countless photos that populate my phone and computer is enough to leave me grinning like an idiot. And having watched our younger son, Ryan, being such a kind, gentle, patient and very involved father has been one of the great thrills of my life. The first photo of Evan was one I took myself on the morning after his birth in the Creston Valley Hospital. I held him in my left arm, his head supported by my hand, and snapped a picture with my right. The memories flood back at the thought, immediately connecting with an image on my cellphone. SD8 doesn’t understand mandate To the Editor: I was invited by concerned parents to attend the videoconference of the April 22 board meeting of the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) trustees, to hopefully help stop the impending demise of Homelinks and other programs that run out of the Creston Education Centre (CEC). As Lorne Eckersley wrote in “Homelinks staying put for ’14-’15” (May 1 Advance, page 1), articulating what John Solly, organizer and principal of the original Homelinks, and spokesperson for the over 40 Creston participants at the board meeting, ALL are against what the board is doing in trying to make ANY changes, especial-

ly moves, to the present programs. Solly correctly gave representation and expressed throughout the meeting that the once wonderful partnership that existed between parents and the trustees is gone; the animosity in the room towards the present trustees (except Annette Hambler-Pruden) was evident, and they just don’t get it! Trustees, again except HamblerPruden, were painfully “trying” to look business-like in cost efficiencies, which was such a joke when it was evident to all that they could not even keep their motions and amendments — or was it a motion, they were so confused — straight, and just did not understand business, let alone their clear mandate to be trustees, as Hambler-Pruden made clear, of this area’s children’s educational needs. Business 101: It is way cheaper to keep your present customers happy than to try and attract new customers. One parent plainly verbalized that relocation changes would result in at least 40 students leaving the Homelinks program, costing the school district

$342,000 in funding. And I would like to add that that is just the start. Homelinks was started to get the superb, hardworking, caring home schooling families the added support to help them facilitate their children’s education. Moving and merging Homelinks into the present schools defeats the very purpose of this entity. As having been a home schooling parent for 15 years, and my daughter being in the first graduation class of Homelinks, if this present board’s attitude was around then, my children would never have been part of this. There are plenty of private schools crying out for the enrolment (and the funding that goes with it) of these home schooled children. The good news, thanks again much to the common sense of lone advocate Hambler-Pruden, things will stay as they are for the 2014-2015 school year. And, as someone mentioned on the way out the door, time enough to vote the present trustees out! Rhonda Barter Creston

Creativity wasteful, but worth it

Creativity is a huge waste of time and resources. The more ways I find to use it, the less efficient it becomes. Unfortunately, I have quite a lot of creativity, and it doesn’t take well to not being used. What makes it inefficient? I would say the supplies. In order to use creativity, you need something to work with, and you generally get what you pay for. Most art forms revolve around esthetics in some way; cost depends on appearances. You can cut corners if it doesn’t affect the look, or if you don’t care if it’s inferior. Sometimes, though, there’s nothing for it but that perfect what-have-you that costs an excessive number of dollars. That, or you end up with something that’s not perfect. Added to that is the time it takes to make art. It’s not instantaneous. It takes time. Usually a lot. Art in a matter of minutes is possible, but if it’s not what you do, it’s not what you do. Since my current, all-consuming project is a dance piece, I’m going to use it as an example. The first thing it needed was music. I was in a hurry, so that only took the above-mentioned few minutes to pick. The second requirement was choreography, and the only things for that were practice and somewhere to do it. If I skip eating lunch, I can use the high

school’s auditorium for about 50 minutes, for which I am immensely grateful. The main issue is that it’s the auditorium, meaning I can’t always have it. So far, I’ve put in about seven or eight

The precept, “Do only good,” asks us to benefit all of life. When we have taken this precept, we no longer address the practical question about how to live from the point of view of, “What do I want?” Instead, before speaking or acting, we consider, “What is good for everyone in this moment, in this situation?” When a Zen practitioner says “good”, it means “that which helps all beings”. Each person has to discover how compassion informs his or her life — the principles are the same for everyone, but the specifics depend upon each person’s circumstances and abilities. There are no hard and fast rules about what is good; every situation is different. But one thing is sure. No progress can be made with this precept unless one is willing to let go of selfish desires. Once we have done that, we can develop faith

in the purity of our essential being and trust ourselves to discern, through meditation, what is truly good. Once we recognize that we wish to do only good, we need to commit our-

Hailey Viers days of practice, and the dance is still not perfected. I don’t have to pay for lessons, since the dance style is my own. The last things are the ones that really cost money: costume, makeup and related items. I got the cheapest makeup I could find for about $50 or $60, all told. Some of it has 50 per cent off stickers. The costume was worse; $30 for a tank top, anyone? It didn’t come with enough sparkles, so I’ve had to add them to it, as well as to the second-hand skirt I’ve altered. Again, that takes time. The term “related items” refers to my preferred prop choice: a six-foot bamboo baton with fabric flags. (I normally use a 10-foot pole; the short one is new.) The perfect fabric cost $7 dollars a

flag, the tape covering the bamboo costs $4 per roll. The stick itself is a repurposed beanpole. So, how long is the dance? Less than three and a half minutes. Doesn’t sound worth it once you do the math, does it? If I was getting paid for it, I can’t imagine what I’d have to charge whoever hired me. All things considered, it makes one ask why I go through all that for a one-off. Why so much effort for a three-minute, single-showing performance? I think it can be summarized with this: I’m an artist. It’s what I do; good reasons are optional. And it isn’t really only three minutes. For me, the entire process — from song selection to walking off the stage — is part of the whole piece of art. It wouldn’t be as much fun if it was easy and instant. In the case of the audience, the idea is to give them something that sticks after the show, even just getting the music stuck in their head. Also, I think I do it for the people who ask me after, “Doesn’t that make you dizzy?” I haven’t a clue why not, but no, it doesn’t. And yes, it’s all totally worth it. selves to that good. It is not enough to pay lip service to the idea of good — it must become the centre of our lives. Our commitment to doing only good helps us through the lifelong process of dropping old harmful habits. It takes a

lot of work to put aside harmful impulses as they arise. But if we let meditation centre us in our intention to do good, we can notice the impulse to do harm, and let it go before we act on it. The true guide to what is good is our intuitive sense of sympathy and compassion. We naturally know what is truly good if we are in touch with our deepest nature, and if we are committed to live by the goodness that is there. Desires and emotions are neither good nor bad; they are simply desires and emotions. There is no need to judge them. What matters is how we respond to them. If we wish to do only good, we train, through meditation, to recognize that there is a line between naturally occurring thoughts and emotions and following those thoughts and emotions. Kitimat refinery benefits environment, economy BY DAVID BLACK

This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime. The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the B.C. coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea

could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. My first column (“B.C. needs protection from environmental threat”, May 1 Advance, page 9) discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost com-

FLOODING

Be prepared!

Flooding and other weather-‐related events are a common occurrence in the Kootenays from April through July. Provincial agencies and local volunteers may monitor streams a nd rivers throughout the freshet / flood season. Residents are responsible for having an emergency plan as well as the tools and items necessary to protect their homes and properties (such as sand bags). In potential life threatening circumstances, the Regional District of Central Kootenay, along with the support of Emergency Management BC (EMBC), may issue an Evacuation Alert or an Evacuation Order to residents living in a flood hazard area. In advance of freshet season, EMBC provides sand bags to the RDCK to protect local infrastructure (bridges, highways, water treatment plants, communications etc.) and to residents if the need becomes apparent.

pletely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed. The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits: •There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cuttingedge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that David Black in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words, the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new design. This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery; Creston & District Community Resource Centre

•An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of very dirty coke (much fouler than B.C. coal) which will be subsequently burnt into the atmosphere to create power. The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada; •Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years. Operations at the refinery will result in more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in B.C., with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery, which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition, there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province; and •The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year. Unfortunately, our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction, which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that. We have a solid business plan and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We are currently moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work. We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations. Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore, some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada. In addition, we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by liquid natural gas rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way, we know the tankers will be state-of-the-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea. Let me be upfront about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers. If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on Northern Gateway this month. David Black is the chair and founder of Black Press, the largest private newspaper publisher in Canada.

Doing good

From page 7 For example, I may become aware of someone who is doing harm and find that I am angry. To do only good is to sit within the anger without suppressing or indulging it by speaking or acting impulsively. I can then take this anger to my meditation and hold it up against my intention to do only good. Then, when the anger has calmed, I can think clearly about how to respond to this knowledge. When I have figured out a response that will not cause any further harm, I can act in a way that expresses my intention to do only good. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, when an impulse to act or speak arises, ask yourself if your intended words or actions will do only good. La Cafamore returning to Crawford Bay church LA CAFAMORE

Ever wonder what elevator music of the late 1700’s might sound like? This and other burning questions will be answered when La Cafamore takes to the stage at the Harrison Memorial Church in Crawford Bay on May 25. The group, now in its sixth year of performance in the Kootenays, will be playing the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Zoltán Kodály and Antonín Dvorák arranged for two violins and viola. For violist Alexis More, the chance to play music of Hungarian composer/educator Kodály hits a personal note. Her mother, Connie Foss More, is a pioneer in the study and teaching of Kodály’s music education system (known as the Kodály method). More’s life is a testament to Kodály’s adage that children were “never too young to begin” the study of music: the violist was exposed to Kodály’s method while in utero and throughout her childhood. Angela Snyder (violin) also has a rich connection to Hungarian music making through her former teacher, noted violinist Lorand Fenyves. In the Hungarian teaching tradition, Fenyves advocated singing musical lines to better understand the music.

The picturesque setting of Harrison Memorial Church, and the responsive audience was a magical combination for the group. “Those are the types of perfor-

mances musicians treasure,” said Cameron. The May 25 concert in Crawford Bay starts at 2 p.m. Admission is by donation.

PUBLIC NOTICE CRESTON LANDFILL WASTE SCREENING PROGRAM

Submitted

La Cafamore will play at Crawford Bay’s Harrison Memorial Church on May 25.

“He loved the singing instruments of the orchestra and claimed that he would learn the cello and the oboe in another lifetime,” said Snyder. “His violin, the Fenyves Stradivarius, had a special soaring oboe-like quality.” Snyder hopes that audiences will respond to the song and dance aspects of the program, which has been inspired by the

folk tunes of Germany, Bohemia and Hungary. The group looks forward to another opportunity to perform in Crawford Bay. “The fall of 2013 was our first experience playing in Crawford Bay” said Rossland violinist Carolyn Cameron. “We were unanimous that La Cafamore should return on a regular basis.”

Please be advised that the RDCK is conducting an on-going Waste Screening Program at the Creston Resource Recovery Facility. The objective of this process is to educate the public about what is accepted for disposal at the site and to encourage recycling and waste diversion. All loads and household garbage bags will be inspected as part of the waste screening process. All Waste Screening activities will be undertaken to ensure compliance with the Resource Recovery Facilities Bylaw (RDCK Bylaw 2174). At this time waste screening events will be for the purpose of education only; no penalties will apply for non-compliant loads during this period of time. In the future, customers found to be non-compliant with RDCK Bylaw 2174 will be subject to appropriate fees & penalties. The RDCK Resource Recovery Bylaw is available on our website: http://www.rdck.ca/EN/main/services/waste-recycling.html For more information about the waste screening program contact: Nicole Ward Environmental Services Coordinator PH: 250-352-8192 / 1-800-268-7325 Email: nward@rdck.bc.ca

Mother-daughter gifts for Mother’s Day

MoTHeR’s DaY (NC) Little girls count on their mothers for care and safety, question their mothers throughout their teens, sift out her knowledge as they come of age — and then somehow overnight, it can strike like a bolt of lightning. There it is, as it’s always been, our mother’s unconditional love from the second we were born. Appreciation may take a while to grow, but when it does, mothers and daughters often become best friends as they laugh, listen, learn, and lean on each other equally. As adults, Mother’s Day is one more opportunity to strengthen those ties, to spoil her with surprises, and to give symbols of the unconditional love we feel for her as well. Canadian lifestyle expert Janette Ewen offers these tips for personalized gifts

between adult mothers and daughters: Tap a special interest. You may have a few shared pursuits with your mother, but which one is tops for her? Is it music, cooking, perhaps horseback riding? Her favourite pastime can be the base for a gift, or for a day out together. Indeed, if it’s something you also did together when you were younger, now it may have much more meaning. Give her a gift card – and go shopping. Select a store that is certain to put a sparkle in her eye and arrange a day to take her there. The allure of a gift card is the fun of finding something fabulous on someone else’s dime. Honour your bond with a keepsake. Start a bracelet that can be filled with special charms for years to come. Celebrating moments is the specialty

of leading jewelry brand, Pandora, and this year their Mother’s Day collection (with delicate roses, tiny bows, symbolic hearts and filigree lace) is especially eye-catching as it goes hand-in-hand with the pretty pastels of spring. On future occasions, you can solve any gift-giving dilemma with a matching statement ring, pendant, clip, or earrings. The collection can be explored at Pandora.net. Take part in her fitness and health. If you have shared health and wellness goals, buy her new runners and some attractive new work-out clothes. Plan a weekly walk together, a game of tennis, yoga, swimming, or aerobic classes at your gym. Make fitness fun year-round by sharing any tips you both find for your body, mind, and soul. www.newscanada.com

Where it all began, 40 years ago...

I

t all started on a 160 acre farm in Canyon. The farm had been Lawrence’s parents’ and in the early 60s he and his wife Eleanor purchased it. They raised their three children - Kelly, Stephen, and Susan - and with their help cleared land and grew alfalfa. At one time they had 200 beef cattle. Lawrence was always trying out different business ventures, from jewellery to actually building a skidoo, and it was no surprise when, after reading in a Vancouver Sun paper that plywood prices were so much less than in town, he looked further into it. After many phone calls and much research, the decision was made to try selling plywood.

On March 4, 1974, Lawrence pulled the bailer and swather out of the barn and replaced them with two lifts of plywood. He hung a shingle out reading ‘Plywood Sales’. From the monies made they purchased four more lifts. The ‘old hip roof barn’ that his father had built (and of which a portion still stands to this day) was gutted out and in it they put nails, plumbing, panelling, and insulation.

the farm and began construction on the new store. Vic Moberg was hired with his CAT and scraper to level the property; Brown Husband laid the block for the new building; Lyle Grills put up the drywall and stippled the ceilings; Norm Mailhot did the wiring; and Jerry Reed did the plumbing.

With the business growing they knew it was inevitable that they needed to move. They drove by a piece of property on Alcrest Drive that was for sale and after investigating further, they knew it was where the future home of Pyramid should be.

In 1984 the first expansion of the store was necessary, and again in 1999 another addition was needed. In 1995 the 5 acre property next door was purchased, and in 2005 a 19,000 square foot warehouse was built which houses nails, plumbing, specialty plywoods, insulation, gyproc, windows, doors, and many other items.

After placing an ad in the Creston Valley Advance, customers started coming from Fernie to Fruitvale, and as far north as Argenta at the other end of Kootenay Lake.

In 1976 the name Pyramid Building Supplies LTD. became incorporated and in 1979 they sold

In March 1980 the building was completed and they had a Grand Opening that May. Son-inlaw Dale Moberg started March of 1980 and daughter Kelly came on board in 1984. Steve and Tania moved back from Lethbridge in 1991 and joined the rest of the family.

Lawrence and Eleanor moved to Erickson

and retired, and Dale, Kelly, Steven and Tania now run the store. At one time, Lawrence and Eleanor’s daughter Susan worked there was well, as did all the grandchildren, from cleaning to front counter work. On Saturday, May 10, we would like to invite everyone to a fun-filled day from 8am - 5pm at the store. There will be free doughnuts, a hot dug lunch by donation with proceeds going towards the Canadian Cancer Society, cake cutting at 2:30, and EZ Rock Radio Station on-site from 11am - 3pm. There will be numerous door prizes, as well as many supplier representatives and in-store specials.

Come and join in all the fun! We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Creston Valley and surrounding communities for 40 years of support.

New artwork on display at Creston library, chamber COMMUNITY OF CRESTON ARTS COUNCIL

Art knows few boundaries! It speaks to both creator and viewer, young and old, all races and nationalities. Art can take many forms and while some forms may not appeal to everyone most will appeal to someone. The current community art displays will, hopefully, offer something that appeals to everyone because they are full of variety and excitement. “Art and Intuition” is what you will find in the display at the Creston Valley Public Library. When you visit the library you will find an exciting exhibit showcasing the art of Cheryl Place and Jennifer Moore from Boswell and Julie Draper from Wynndel. The variety of art from these ladies makes Art in the Library a mustsee event. This display of Art in the Library runs until June 28 and can be viewed during library hours. Art in the Chamber gives you “Art

Explosion”, featuring over 20 members of the Creston Art Club. A definite explosion of color, variety, style, texture and media is what this exhibit is all about. While many Creston area residents are familiar with the art of the Creston Art Club, it is always fun to see the new art the members have created. Take your mother, your child or a friend out for an afternoon of art at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre. Art in the Chamber can be seen during business hours through June 30.

An excerpt from a poem by Cheryl Place fits most artists: “Trusting my instincts, as I incorporate in the work of art experiences from my life.” These community art displays are sponsored by the Community of Creston Arts Council, the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. Each display is about two months long so you will have lots of time to stop in and enjoy the art. If any artists are interested in displaying their work in these venues next year, contact Val at 250866-5772.

Town requesting extra funds to clear fire fuel BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A plan to clear forest fire fuel near Town of Creston boundaries

and reduce fire hazards could cost more than anticipated. Creston Fire Rescue Chief Mike Moore said at the April 29 town council meeting that three con-

tractors responded to a request for proposals but all exceed the $273,000 allocation in the budget. Of the total, a Union of BC Municipalities wildfire fuels mitigation program would provide $245,700 in grant money, with the town adding $27,300. “After reviewing the information in consultation with the project consultant, it was deemed that a request to UBCM to increase the funding allocation towards the project to $289,710 was preferred to have the project proceed,” Moore said in his report. “This request, if approved, will not require increased financial commitments by the Town of Creston.” Council passed a motion to make the request.

Council Briefs •Pastor Gord Lawrence of New Life Church presented his final invocation to council. He is retiring in June. •Council determined, on the advice of municipal services co-ordinator Ross Beddoes, that its interests are not affected by Regional District of Central Kootenay comprehensive land use bylaws for areas A, B and C. The bylaws will amend zoning regulations pertaining to licensed medical marijuana production and

research facilities. “The zoning already provides for a buffer between any development and Town of Creston land, so we will not be directly affected by what the RDCK decides,” he said. •A request for a $500 discretionary grant for the Rick Clark Memorial Golf Tournament for student bursaries was defeated. “These grants are usually provided to youth sports teams that qualify for provincial tournaments and the like, and not for ongoing fundraising programs,” Coun. Wesly Graham said. •Council approved a $500 request for discretionary funds to help with the 24th annual Yaqan Nukiy Powwow to be held on the May long weekend. •Grant requests for the BC Seniors Games (sufficient financial information was not supplied) and First Creston Scouts (because the group was awarded a Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Grant) were turned down. •Town council was given an overview of a proposed RDCK bylaw to create subregional service committees, much like the Creston Valley services committee, which has operated without legal status for years. Members of such

committees, who are regional directors, will not receive additional remuneration or expenses for participating. •Establishment of an RDCK water supply board was also discussed briefly. It would include directors from areas A through K and the Town of Creston representative. •Engineering manager Colin Farynowski reported that infrastructure work that has been disrupting Erickson Road traffic is nearly complete. The work involved pushing a 24-inch steel pipe beneath the railway tracks to allow water lines to run through. A number of other small projects along Erickson Road are being completed in anticipation of a repaving project by the Ministry of Transportation later this summer. The successful tenderer for the paving project has been announced, he said. •Executive assistant Bev Caldwell reported that the operators of the midway that set up beside Millennium Park last weekend said their stay was surprisingly successful despite cool and rainy weather. Operators thanked the Town of Creston for accommodating the midway and made a $2,800 contribution to the Creston Valley Blossom Festival committee.

Don Keen

A Sincere Thank You to the staff of the Mountain View Terrace Wing of the Swan Valley Lodge. They were outstanding during my three week stay in April as my caregiving husband recovered from surgery. Professional, friendly, loving care in all respects. The Swan Valley Lodge is truly an asset to the Creston Valley and surrounding area. Much appreciated, Lorraine Godberson

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Don Keen, with his loving wife Joyce by his side, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by three children: Patty Doering (Chris), Gordon and Wade; two stepchildren: Debbie Wuthrich (Dennis) and Jennifer Burton; seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Cindy (Darren), Jolene Mellor (Ken), Justin (Sally), Hunter, Tayman, and Tevin; two stepgrandchildren: Melyssa Sutton (Josh) and Adam Wuthrich; and six great-grandchildren. There will be no funeral service at Don’s request.

Victims don't verify the story until after the money has been sent as the caller speciďŹ cally asks that they do not want other relatives to know what has happened by asking “Can you please help me? Wanting to help their grandchild, the victim sends money by a money transfer company such as Money Gram or Western Union. This year during the special day, the Usability team conducted a study looking at the Buick Enclave’s third-row safety belt buckles. The kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the by Keith Morgan safety belt based on a five-point scale. General Motors has put a new spin on ‘Take A previous study dealt with a sickly problem that many of us have Your Child To Work Day’. You can’t put them to work while they are learning what mom and dad faced on trips with young offspring. In the early days of DVD players do but they can be useful as experiment subjects. Researchers recorded the responses of more than 75 kids who were asked when the screen distance was too close and too far away. From there, the data was graphed and compiled to determine the best location. The results were turned over to the vehicle engineering team to integrate into the Enclave’s design.

Advance publisher is library’s next living book CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Creston Valley Public Library is pleased to present Creston Valley Advance publisher Lorne Eckersley at its next Living Book event at 1:30 p.m. May 10. Eckersley’s love of newspapers dates back to his elementary school years when he sat at the kitchen table, eating cinnamon toast and reading the Calgary Albertan each morning. He wrote his first column in his Grade 7 class newspaper, a celebratory look at the 1967 Stanley Cup champions, his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. In his late teens he edited his community’s monthly newspaper, the Bowmont News. After completing a two-year journalism program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Eckersley arrived in Creston in 1979 to take his first paying newspaper job at the Creston Valley Advance.

“I’ll stay for five years,” he told owners Bill and Sue Betcher. After a year as sports editor, photographer and reporter, he took on the position as advertising manager. In his 35-year association with the Advance, he has written about 2,000 columns, 1,300 of them under the This is the Life title. He has also written columns on sports, wine and entertainment. His favourite title? A video movie review column he called The Illage Videot. In his Living Book presentation, Eckersley focuses on the role of opinion columns in newspapers and talks about some of his favourites. “I don’t write editorials, I write columns,” he says. “An editorial expresses the opinion of the newspaper, a column reflects the opinion of its author. The newspaper I publish doesn’t have opinions, but I do. Lots of them!” The Creston library’s Living Books speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other.

Living “books” are real people, your friends and neighbours, volunteering to share aspects of their own “story”. Through living books the library seeks to encourage the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Each month, the library hosts a get-together where a member of your community shares their personal experiences. Topics are varied, from art to travel to local history to coping with loss, and everything in between. Attendees of the speaker series learn more about the people in their community and their diverse backgrounds and expertise. All are welcome to hear Eckersley’s presentation on Saturday at the Creston Valley Public Library. For more information, call 250-428-4141.

Creston Valley Advance publisher Lorne Eckersley is next in the Creston Valley Public Library’s Living Book series. Advance file
