High school graduation is now in reach for area youth who have found education by taking a hike into the great outdoors. The teens (grades 10-12) are the first to participate in the Take a Hike West Kootenay program. In partnership with School District 20, the new full-time al-
ternative education program engages atrisk youth through a unique combination of adventure-based learning, academics, therapy and community involvement. Graduation previously seemed like years away for Castlegar’s Shayne Flynn, who now has four 10year plans that he will embark on after wrapping up his studies this year at the Koote-

nay Columbia Learning Centre (former Trail Middle School). He said getting outside and active allows him to find balance and achieve a healthy mental and physical state, which ultimately has enriched his lifestyle and strengthened his desire to learn. “Everyone I know in this class is a previous delinquent, skipper, stoner, somebody
who just didn’t want to come to school but this class has offered so much to us that we just can’t turn it up,” he said. “I used to skip days, play sick so I wouldn’t have to come to school and that was when I was pretty much going next door to my house; here I have to come all the way from Castlegar to Trail and I do it every day because I want to.” Classroom time
doesn’t seem to weigh down on these students, who always have their next adventure to look forward to. They break away from the books with one day trip a week and various multipleday trips, where they go on expeditions. The overnight trips are an opportunity to check any drama at the door and clear the mind in preparation for what lies ahead.

Learning program creating results in West Kootenay Continued from page 2
“They’re forced into situations where they have to rely on each other, have to trust each other, have to get to know each other and so there is a lot of commonality there so these really strong bonds are created,” explained lead teacher Gareth Cryer. The program launched its inaugural year in the West Kootenay this past September and community collaboration has been a major priority. Since the start, various community leaders have stepped forward with funds and dedicated service. Such was the case when Telus recently handed over a cheque of nearly $7,000, a donation made possible by the telecommunications company that banked $25 for every new optic TV activation in the Trail region since the fall of 2013. Program students give back to the community with weekly volunteer outings to Kate’s Kitchen, the Salvation Army and the Beaver Valley Nursery School to name a few. In its first year, the approximate $100,000
required to run the program is divided between the Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation and the community engagement committee, which is responsible for fundraising the remainder of the funds. But as the program moves into its consecutive years, financial support from the foundation is pulled back and it’s expected that it will be fully self-sustaining by year four. Take a Hike began in the Vancouver school district in 2000. There are now two 20-person classes in Vancouver, along with the newly formed class based in Trail and talk of further expansion, according to Phil Cotterill, board chair for the Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation. His belief in kids and in education has kept him working for the cause since the beginning and he’s excited to see more places in the province develop this alternative education. “When I look back to growing up, for me I had lot flexibility in my family — I could do pretty much what I

wanted and that often meant that I ended up on the edges of doing some things that probably weren’t the best for me,” he said. “But I was really fortunate. I was an athlete and I had lots of success at athletics so there were lots of folks willing to step in and help me or shape some of the things that I did in a way that wasn’t quite so dramatic.” That wasn’t always the case for his peers, he said, who fell off the rails and had no place to go. Not every student fits into the mainstream school system. Students in the Take a Hike program often struggle with issues that have inhibited their success such as drug and alcohol addiction, physical and mental abuse, criminal activity, low selfesteem, depression, and/or trauma. “I think this is just a great opportunity and if we can get it into more schools that would be a great thing because it’s hard to sit at a desk for six hours out of your day; sitting at a desk for that long is just unbearable for a lot of people and that’s why the major-
ity of kids drop out of school,” said Flynn. “You need to have some kind of outlet— whether it’s going outside, hitting a punching bag, hanging with a few friends or just
going on a walk.” To learn more about the program or to make a donation to the West Kootenay chapter, visit www. takeahikefoundation. org

Sculpturewalk soaring to new heights
4.3” x 4”
Jim Sinclair Castlegar News
The Sculpturewalk story gets better with every chapter, and the opening page of chapter five is about to be written. For starters, the program which has taken a firm toehold in Castlegar is only as good as the contributing artists and hardworking organizers and volunteers – on all fronts Sculpturewalk scores an A+. What the program has done for Castlegar’s self perception and public image is nothing short of breathtaking – employing an artistic medium which is timeless but also as upto-date as the latest efforts by the imaginative crew of artists lined up for the public event. Castlegar Sculpturewalk is firmly entrenched on the local list of annual attractions. “Sculpturewalk is now entering its fifth year, and with our success we’re gaining national attention,” declared Castlegar Sculpturewalk Executive Director Joy Barrett in a recent presentation to Castlegar City Council. “Last year in the Globe & Mail, the Minister of Community, Sport & Cultural Development Coralee Oakes highlighted Sculpturewalk, calling it ‘an amazing cultural initiative’. We also presented at the Union of BC Municipalities conference in Vancouver last fall, receiving a great deal of positive attention and praise for our program which is marking Castlegar out as a true arts innovator and supporter.” Barrett had more points to make in regard to the attraction’s rapid rise to prominence. “Within this short period of time,” she outlined, “Sculpturewalk has become a vital driver to this region’s creative economy, bringing residents of the area into the downtown core, helping to sustain local artists by providing a display and marketplace for their work, and drawing visitors to Castlegar from across the region.” Barrett informed council that this year a partnership has been forged with the Rotary Interact Youth group to begin a series of Sculpturewalk public tours. Partnership is also con-
tinuing with Kootenay Rockies Tourism. “We’re currently preparing for our installation day and Opening Gala on May 10th,” says Barrett, “which is two weeks earlier than our usual launch. This year’s lineup will feature 32 sculptures from artists across North America, and one artist from Belgium!” Barrett saved a significant kicker for last, letting Council know about a trademark ID the program may now use and enjoy. “Officially, Castlegar can now call itself ‘The Sculpture Capitol of Canada’ – an honour I think it truly deserves,” Barrett proudly stated. “This designation will be a valuable tool in marketing Castlegar, and we will work with the $ 99this.” City and the Chamber to forward

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week May 9, 2014
Tip of the Week: The Solar Eclipse on April 28th has passed its first quarter turn on May 6th and is now pushing on towards full. Even the first turn will produce measurable results if that seed event is destined to produce important changes in your life. If so, outer circumstances are pressuring you to assume a decisive action mode. Yet, the fuller measure of the eclipse will reveal itself at the time of the Full Moon on May 14th. Although the Moon does not harbour life, nor emit its own light, only reflecting that of the sun, it does contribute immensely to life on earth. It is presented as a fact by cosmologists that without the moon there would be no life on our planet. In this respect, it acts as something of a regulator at least. It is also a clear indication of the passage of time. And it literal and symbolic purpose and power goes far beyond these vital contributions as well. In one’s Natal chart, the Moon represents one’s mother or the parent who expressed the maternal and ideally the nurturing role. So, whatever sign your Natal Moon is in generally describes how you perceived and experienced your mother in your formative childhood years. This fact is easily measured and demonstrated. The exact degree, the location of the moon in your chart and the aspects it makes to other planets describes the deeper story. With Mother’s Day on Sunday May 11, we are drawn to pay special attention to mother. Generally, this implies our biological mother and doing so is natural, healthy and fulfilling. However, we can also direct our attention to mother in other ways. There is the principle of mother, of feminine, of nurturing and of all the miracle and mystery of the fact that life comes from life. By extension we can pay tribute as well to Mother Earth and Mother Nature. Given the plight of our times regarding the environment and the delicate ecological balance of nature, which sustains all life on the planet, we are wise to honour mother in all her expressions and we are reminded of some of her majesty as expressed in the waxing and waning cycle of the moon. Happy Mother’s Day!

All being well your plans are laid and a promising momentum has been initiated. Now the pace is accelerating. There remain some delicate negotiations. The key is to exercise an open mind and aim to see things as others do. Commitment and resolve are good but stubborn butt headedness gets an E. Allow room for the unconventional for best results You have entered new territory and in more ways than one. In the literal sense you are challenged to work harder. On the other hand innovation is percolating in the back of your mind. Intuitions to take an alternate approach are poking for attention. You continue to be busy on a variety of fronts. You are almost there. Persevere! Setting the stage for new experiences to come is on your radar. Learning new skills is important now, especially if you have not already been focused this way over the past couple of years. There is an element of ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’ lingering. This feeling is your friend. Concentrate to break through habitual perspectives to activate new directives. Making new friends and strengthening existing alliances continues. This requires a diplomatic yet alternative approach. Try something new. Shake-it up somehow and show yourself and others that your intentions are woven with creative intelligence and originality. Sometimes we have to get out of our own way. Now is one of those times. Mixing business with pleasure is always satisfying when it works. Weaving arts and culture into an otherwise practical focus is likely now. A down flow of intuitions will be the result of this synthesis. Be open to receive and take note. You may feel the need to dig deeper these days to feel confident but you should be used to that by now. You are in the process of building upon a new vision. This is a call for strategic thinking. It includes deciphering who has the talents and resources you need. Avoidance and escapism will produce a double jeopardy now. Summon your internal captain archetype and bark a few orders if you must. And then be the good soldier that obeys the command.

Financial considerations remain a central theme. A steady flow of changes on relationship fronts is featured. Perhaps you have moved or are planning to. Whether literally or figuratively, now is the time to make some important changes. These require some measure of investment. It may be as much about having ample energy as it is about money. Entering into new partnerships is on your mind. This includes research for practical and useable answers. You are hardly in a frivolous mood. Yet, the need to overcome inertia and apathy is a lingering challenge. At best you open to new ideas. Innovation is a key word. This is a call to blend perseverance with flexibility. Changes in your daily rhythm and routine are brewing. Ideally you are willing to try new things. Doing so is all part of the process of clearing the old to make way for the new. Yet, it is not just possessions that have served their time and worth it includes attitudes, self-concepts, perspectives and habitual approaches as well. A creative focus directed towards home and family is likely now. You are in the mood to do something different. As your world expands socially, it may feel like time to match it in your personal life, to create healthy balance. Giving or receiving training and instruction is also implied. Direct any criticisms to ideas and not at people and keep it constructive. You have arrived at a new juncture on your journey. Now you feel it is time to establish a more solid base. However, you may still have a few unexpected turns in the road to overcome. Uncertainty in certain respects has become the new norm. Yet, in the bigger picture you are likely advancing. Continue to find reason and opportunity to assert your authority through service. Many new ideas and perspectives are on your mind. With your ambitions running high, you are open to new input and are willing to do things differently. Taking creative risks is important now, however be careful not to overextend yourself. Brainstorm for new ideas that you can actually build upon. Enjoy the intellectual stimulation but aim to keep it practical.

Places
Fife’s origin remains a mystery
Greg nesteroff
West Kootenay Advertiser
Fifty-eighth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The community of Fife, east of Christina Lake, was originally called Sutherland Siding, although the origins of both names are uncertain. The latter was after Sutherland Creek, so called by March 1898. According to G.P.V. and Helen Akrigg in British Columbia Place Names (3rd Ed.), the creek was named “After J. Sutherland, a cowboy-prospector who spent years prospecting the upper watershed of the creek and died in a cabin at its mouth.” A death registration exists for one J. Sutherland who died March 17, 1900 in Grand Forks, age 26. However, in Christina Lake: An Illustrated History, Lincoln Sandner stated the creek was named after George Sutherland, a pioneer prospector. Are they the same man? In any case, the earliest reference to Sutherland Siding is in the Cascade Record of March 24, 1900. But a post office application submitted that year suggested using the name Christina or Fife instead. An inspector’s report of May 15 stated:
“There is no regular station as yet on the Columbia & Western Railway where the proposed office is intended to be located. The place is known on the Canadian Pacific Railway time tables as ‘Sutherland Siding’ but I am informed that it is intended to change the name of the place at once to ‘Fife’ and in the event of the establishment of the proposed office being authorized, I respectfully beg to recommend that it be known as ‘Fife.’ There is a locality in this province known as Christiania where an office has been applied for, and in the event of this office being established and known as Christina, missending of mail is likely to result.” The Fife post office opened on August 1, 1900 and the railway siding also adopted the new name. But where did it come from? One source suggests it honoured the Duke of Fife, Alexander Duff (1849-1912) who married Princess Louise, daughter of King Edward VII. (Fife is a Scottish county.) Another possibility, pointed out by Boundary historian Alice Glanville, is William H. Fife (1833-1905), who had mining interests in Rossland in the 1890s and spent time in Grand Forks. The city of Fife, Wash., near Tacoma, is named for him.

A group of claims known as the Fife property also straddled the railway between Fife and Christina Lake. But did the place take its name from the claims or vice versa? In 1899, a huge limestone vein was discovered in the area and Cominco operated the resulting quarry into the 1950s. The post office closed in 1966.
At least 62 people were born in Fife between 1904 and 1931, although few remain. One of them, Rose Hallstrom, died in Grand Forks on March 17 at 90. A minimum of 18 more people were born in the adjacent community of Hilltop, further up the mountainside. A small number of people still live in Fife today.

Then we bypassed Kelowna and headed for Beaverdell, admiring the evidence of the now defunct historic Kettle Valley railway. Then the chilling hail hit but a single glass of beer at Rock Creek restored us us. We weaved our way north along the valley, through wine country, to Penticton. “Piece of cake,” said George the next day as he looked at the route to Hope. The winding back road trail to Princeton was a joy but the last stretch home was not. First, we were hit by snow, then hail that numbed our faces as we descended from Manning Park. I thought I had made a significant anatomical discovery when it appeared that the icy wind blasting up my right nostril seemed to exit through my left ear. Of course, it could have been the hole in the left side of my helmet. There was one other little challenge. The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. We made it safe and sound. “Next year, Sid?” “I’ll get back to you, George.” keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the
mainstream Volkswagen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI engines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing
right. The engine is a fuelsipping diesel that saves roughly 25-30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look. Looks The body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be

one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, is in combination with the sleek coupe-like silhouette is what makes this car different than much of the competition. Buyers who like the idea of a big luxury car but also want something a bit sportier will enjoy the dynamic stance, especially combined with the oversized sports wheels. Oversized is also a good way to describe the A7s grille, which is framed
by an aggressive set of headlamps and deep front spoiler. The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired. Inside The downside to the swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for fullsized adult passengers.

The reality is that many professions who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best material are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market. Drive Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb.-ft. to 428 lb.-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go. Verdict The Audi A7 is a lovely car; filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige but it all comes at a price. One thing Audi does not have is a 4-cylinder diesel for the smaller and less expensive models, something both BMW and Mercedes offer. I suspect there will be one coming in short order, but for now the A7 is a prime example of Audi’s expansion into diesel transportation. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca

Buying the right motorcycle for the right price By Alexandra Straub
When you head out to buy your motorcycle, Alexandra Straub advises arrive armed with a budget and stick to it.
repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. New or Used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warranties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget. Private Sale or from a Dealership? Speaking from experience, buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike on Craigslist. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers
You’ve got your license, you’ve got your proper gear, now all you need is your motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Budget Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing to outline when it comes to your new ride. If you’re buying used, this is particularly important. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike just happens to be a nightmare and costs you an unanticipated fortune on
also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VIN through ICBC or a Trusted Database It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail the damage. It’ll also show if there is money owing on the bike or if it was reported stolen. Keep in mind, if the bike is from out of the country, the record likely won’t show.

Buying the right motorcycle for the right price Drives-U-Crazy continued from page 12
When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in any accidents and had all original parts. I left thinking that the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. However, I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage costs of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might even have the bike’s history on hand for you. It never hurts to double check. The Myth of Displacements Many new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader write me asking what he should get. He’s 6’2”, 220 pounds and had long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. I asked him why. He said he wanted something manageable
for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t going to fit him! Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Davidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Suzuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher Establishing a displacement but they’re budget is probably going to be easy to manage and work much better with the most important his body. What did he buy? thing to outline when A used 2006 Honda Shadow it comes to your new 750cc. And he loves it. ride. I recommend buying a bike that you are comfortable on, Alexandra Straub both physically and mentally. Test Rides
‘‘
’’
Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open to this, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical Inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend an extra $100-$200 to get a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting into. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
If you have a motoring mishap, the cars are driveable and nobody is injured then get off the road to exchange insurance details. Why do people just stop where they bump and get out of their cars in the middle of the road and risk life and limb among busy traffic? – The police aren’t coming to investigate but they may ticket you for causing an obstruction. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Canadian car version versus US editions By Bob McHugh
Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). Softer, more flowing body styling lines cover a new SkyActiv structure that’s lighter yet, according to Mazda, offers a 30 per cent improvement in torsional rigidity. The 3’s wheelbase has also been stretched by 6 cm, yet it’s a tad shorter in overall length. Inside the cabin there’s more room, especially leg and head room for the rear passengers. Mazda3i GT Sedan: A top-line GT (Grand Touring) edition of Mazda3 is available in Canada, but only with a larger 2.5-litre
During a recent short stay in Los Angeles, I drove a Mazda3i Grand Touring. It’s a trim level that’s not available in Canada, even though Mazda3 is more popular (comparatively) in Canada than in the US. And price, well, that also turned out to be a surprisingly interesting comparison. It’s easy to understand why so many Canadians already love Mazda3. The 2014 edition is an improved all-new generation car that’s already been voted Canada’s Best New Small Car, by the Automobile

SkyActiv engine and an automatic transmission. The 3i GT that I drove in LA came with the smaller 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. An automatic is an option in the US and there’s also a 3s GT edition with
the 2.5-litre engine (manual and automatic). The 2.0-litre engine was available last year in Mazda3, but the new body allows a larger exhaust manifold and this improves its mid-range torque output. It’s definitely better, but still not great. That said, overall I really like this engine and crisp-shifting manual transmission combination and the fuel economy was outstanding. There was 312 miles (502 km) on the trip meter when I pulled into a gas station, for the first time, at the end of my stay. It took less than 9 gallons ($35) to fill the tank. That’s 34.8 mpg (US), or 41.8 mpg (Imp gal) or 6.9 L/100 km, if you prefer metric and brilliant by any measure. My driving was a mix of city/highway and usual traffic hold-ups that are commonplace in the LA area. The EPA official combined fuel economy rating for this vehicle is 33 mpg. Canada vs US: Small cars are number one in Canada and we bought over 40,000 Mazda3 models last year, making it the fourth most popular small car. Mid-size cars traditionally out-sell small cars in the US, and Mazda3 was only the tenth best seller in the small car segment, however, that’s still 100,000 plus sales. A no-frills, stripped base model is also the norm in the US, but not in Canada (got to have those seat heaters). In fact, our Ameri-
can friends have a choice of six Mazda3 trim levels, while Canadians have only three. “We have a less complicated trim level strategy,” countered Sandra Lemaitre (National Manager, Public Relations at Mazda Canada). “One, to make it less complicated for consumers and two, to allow our dealers carry inventory that consumers want. We also offer more option packages that allow consumers to add on, rather than making them commit to a specific trim” Pricing: You’ve probably read (on the inter-web) or heard of people saving thousands of dollars by buying a vehicle in the US. That may be true for some high-end luxury or specialty products, but not so in the price-competitive lower end of the market. Dollar for dollar a Canadian pays about the same, or less, than a US buyer, for a similar new Mazda3. So, you will definitely save money by buying a new Mazda3 in Canada, when you also factor in the current 10 to 12 per cent difference in currency exchange rates and importation costs. The base Mazda3 GX, with a start price of $15,995 in Canada, is a real bargain. That’s $950 below the lowest priced Mazda3 sold in the US, the SV (stripped edition), at $16,945. At the top end, a Mazda3 Sky GT is $25,855 in Canada. The equivalent US model is a Mazda3s GT (automatic) at $25,995. “When we price our vehicles in Canada we look primarily at the competition and then at exchange rates with Japan. Our top priority is making it competitively priced within our market,” added Lemaitre. Looking ahead: The bad news is that there won’t be a direct equivalent to the Mada3i GT (2.0-litre) in Canada next year (for the 2015 model year). However, I did learn that a manual transmission will be available with the GT (2.5-litre) sold in Canada, in 2015. It’s anybody’s guess where prices will be next year, but one thing is for sure, the Mazda3 is great little car and a great value in Canada right now. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Acura MDX has all the bells and whistles By Ian Harwood
The 2014 Acura MDX is a perfect example of how technology can change your driving experience. There is no mistaking an Acura, be it a car, cross-over or an SUV, the front end gives it away. The front air dam coming to a point, the large grille featuring the Acura logo and the swept back sweeping lines set it apart. The available 19” aluminum alloy wheels on the MDX fills the wheel well very nicely.
three row side curtain airbags with roll over sensor, engine immobilizer theft deterrent system are some of the many safety features in this vehicle. I like the power folding, body colored side mirrors with intergraded turn signals.
Power is delivered by a 290 hp, 3.5 Litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The super handling all wheel drive (SH-AWD) suspension gives you the best ride while maintaining just enough
control to keep you safely on the road. My tester was the MDX Elite that comes fully loaded. After driving around in this vehicle for a week, I started to get used to the technology and how the safety features start to
perform, it became natural and helped me relax and enjoy the drive. It is a powerful and very luxurious vehicle, a real treat to drive. I would like to see a little more headroom and the six-speed transmission seemed to have a mind of its own.
Lots of competition in this segment, from Lincoln MKT, Volvo XC90, Buick Enclave, and the Infiniti JX, so if Acura wants to win you over, they have to keep delivering a great product with as many standard features as they can while
keeping the price in check. Fast Facts: 11.2/7.7 L/100 km (City/ Highway) 5 Year/100,000km no small print warranty. Price as tested $70,227.60

When you first open the door of the Acura MDX Elite you immediately notice the refinements and how everything flows together very well. The driver’s seat is an eight-way power adjustable with a twoway way power lumbar support, and the passenger front seat is an eight-way power adjustable. The second row is a 60/40 split folding and the third row is a 50/50 split flat folding. With the third row, folded flat there is plenty of room for cargo. The available Navigation system has voice recognition and a rear back up camera built in. The stereo is a 546-watt ELS surround sound system with DVD/AM/FM/SiriusXM/MP3/WMA tuner with your choice of 10 to 12 speakers including a subwoofer. The available DVD entertainment system features a 16.2 inch split screen display with HDMI compatibility, no more kids fighting over the remote. There is an available Collision Mitigation Braking system (CBMS), standard equipment on the Elite, which is constantly monitoring the road for you. If it detects you are approaching another vehicle too quickly it will warn you with a flashing “brake” sign on the instrument panel and if the accident is unavoidable it will tighten up the seatbelts and apply the brakes for you to reduce the severity of the impact. Another safety feature is the blind spot information system. This warns when a vehicle is in your blind spot and flashes an amber light on the inside of each side mirror warning you. The most commonly replicated classic cars By Rob Sass
The classic car world is full of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” stories of people who had the opportunity to buy something when it was affordable only to see it sail out of reach. If you didn’t buy a Shelby Cobra during the Nixon administration for 10 grand, the only alternative for most people today is a replica. Replicas are all good fun unless someone tries to pass one off as the real deal. Here are five of the most common classic car counterfeits: 1. 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: The Cobra might just be the most desirable sports car on the planet. Not coincidentally, it’s also the most replicated. With bulging,

macho good looks; a big block Ford V-8; side pipes; shattering performance; and only around 300 originals made, it was a certainty from almost the beginning that supply and demand would never be equal. The originals have always commanded good money — by the late 1970s, they were approaching $50,000, and around that time, cottage industries sprang up everywhere to build Cobra replicas. Some were quite good while others bordered on undriveable. A lot depended on the skill (or lack thereof) of the builder. Even Carroll Shelby, the car’s original creator, got into the act. Some argue that the 1992 Dodge Viper was the ultimate tribute to the Cobra. Fortunately, it’s really hard to pass off one of
the replicas as the real deal; the Shelby Club maintains a registry of the real cars by serial number and history We believe that every classic car has a story. Tell us yours here. 2. 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder: The 550 Spyder (of James Dean death car fame) and the more common bathtub-like Porsche 356 Speedster have a long history of being replicated. Vancouver company Intermeccanica makes very high quality Speedster replicas, while Beck in the U.S. has a great reputation for making 550 Spyder replicas. Because the originals were alloy and steel, respectively, and the replicas are fibreglass,

there’s no danger of one being passed off as the real thing. Real 550 Spyders are $4 million or so and Speedsters can bring more than $300,000. Replicas can be had for around $30,000, which combined with the fact that they’re quite fun to drive explains their appeal. 3. 1961 250 GT Ferrari California Spyder: Before Ferrari got serious about cracking down on violations of its intellectual property rights, its products were among the most commonly knocked-off cars on the planet. A very bogus California Spyder built by a company called Modena Industries shot to fame as the hero car in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” About 50 were built between 1987 and 1989, before Ferrari said “basta!” Real ones start at about $9 million. 4. Ferrari 308 GTS: After the “Ferris Bueller” car, the Ferrari with the most screen exposure was the red Ferrari 308 GTS that Tom Selleck drove on “Magnum P.I.” Conveniently, as the 308 reached the apex of its fame via the TV
show, Pontiac came out with the mid-engine Fiero, whose space frame design combined with non-stressed removable plastic body panels made it the ideal platform for conversions designed to simulate far more expensive midengine exotics. The most famous (or perhaps infamous) of these was the MERA, a replica of the Ferrari 308. While the proportions were off and the interior screamed cheap, we suspect that most of the then 20-something barflies taken in by the guy with gold chains and a polyester Hawaiian shirt driving the bogus 308 never suspected a thing. 5. 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster: Other than a slew of neoclassics that vaguely replicate Mercedes-Benzes of the 1930s, pre-war cars are seldom faked. But the Iconic Indiana-built Auburn Speedster (along with its equally stunning sister the Cord 810/812) is an exception. Lost count of how many companies have built replicas over the last 40 years are so. Like the Cobras, some are quite

good and some exhibit the build quality of a Sochi hotel room.
