Craigdarroch stained glass sparks idea for new silver coin Craigdarroch Castle’s collection of fine stained glass will soon be featured on a new silver collector coin by the Royal Canadian Mint. Officially unveiled Tuesday, the coin, which features a replica of one of the stained glass windows that adorns Craigdarroch Castle, is the first in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Stained Glass series of coins. Coated in glass-like enamel, the $20 coin shines and reflects light much like the exquisite Victorian residential stained and leaded glass collection for which Craigdarroch Castle is renowned. “This stunning coin is a wonderful celebration of the stained glass windows that are admired by the thousands of people that visit Craigdarroch Castle each year,” said John Hughes, executive director of Craigdarroch Castle. “It’s an honour for us to work with the Royal Canadian Mint, and to see our stained glass collection’s timeless beauty and craftsmanship forever immortalized on this fine coin.” The focal point of the coin’s design is made up of a grouping of six brightly coloured flowers. To create a stained glass effect, each petal is filled in by hand with blue, purple and red translucent enamel and green translucent enamel is painted as veined leaves. A diverging brick pattern, like that of the castle’s original windows, serves as a backdrop to the flowers, while the obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt. A national historic site, Craigdarroch Castle’s stained glass collection is believed to be one of the most exquisite in North America.

The Victoria Bug Zoo, located at 631 Courtney St., continues to be one of the city’s top tourist draws.

The developer of a 10-storey residential building planned for downtown Victoria will pay the city $10,000 in exchange for more height. Under the city's land lift analysis program, developers can build above zoned height restrictions by paying into the city's public realm and heritage seismic upgrading funds. Escher, an 84-unit Chard Development Ltd. building slated for a parking lot at 838 Broughton St., is the first test of the new program, and president David Chard said he's relieved with the result. "We were a little bit worried, because there's really been no examples yet where this economic analysis has gone through the city. It's been an interesting process for us and for the city," he said. The land lift analysis program was created in 2011 to help fund the city's public realm improvements and seismic upgrading of heritage buildings, a model adopted by many North American cities. Chard spoke about his upcoming projects from the rooftop of Duet, a 90-unit residential project on Michigan Street in James Bay, on schedule for completion by November. The units are currently about 50 per cent sold, he said. The project is the fifth Chard building built in or around the downtown core since 2006, which has given Chard a unique perspective on the Victoria real estate market. Members of Unifor Local 333 in Greater Victoria is putting its best foot forward to help food banks in Greater Victoria. For the last two weeks, the union has been collecting food and other donations at its worksites for Victoria Mustard Seed Food Bank and Church. Tomorrow (May 10), the union will host a 12-hour food drive at Save-on-Foods on Blanshard Street and in Sidney. The goal is to raise $10,000 in food and cash donation. The food drive runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

CFB Esquimalt marks National Day of Honour Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon wil be among the dignitaries during the National Day of Honour ceremony at CFB Esquimalt this morning (May 9). The ceremony will recognize those who fell, fought and contributed to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. Over the 12-year campaign, more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served in Afghanistan. The ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m. in front of the Wall of Valour, located below the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt Wardroom.

A typical Mother’s Day in Victoria involves a nice lunch or afternoon tea followed by a stroll along Dallas Road or through Beacon Hill Park. But the Victoria Conservatory of Music is offering a more unique take on the perennial celebration of mom: the 32nd annual Music Mother’s Day Garden Tour. “This is one of the longest running fundraisers in Victoria – people come from all over the Lower Mainland and Washington,” said Cynthia Funnell, VCM spokesperson. On May 10 and 11, gardening aficionados from as far away as Sequim, Wash. (where the annual lavender festival takes place) will make the trip to Victoria for the conservatory’s annual garden tour. The all-weekend event puts musicians in the heart of each garden, where a VCM student or faculty member serenades the crowd. The 10 gardens on show include a “bamboo heaven” in Esquimalt, where more than 50 varietals of bamboo grow from a few centimetres to nine metres tall. Over in Fernwood, traverse a rock and alpine garden in an intimate urban setting. To wrap up the weekend, VCM is putting on a “foot-stomping, hand-clapping” $10 concert featuring the Victoria Soul Gospel Choir with Checo Tohomaso at Alix Goolden Hall,” Funnell said. “It really is a gift to the community at $10,” she said. “We want mothers, daughters, grand-

Medical health officer earns lifetime honour

When it comes to promoting and protecting kids’ health, Dr. Richard Stanwick’s efforts are hard to match. From advocating for smoke-free air, to helmet safety standards, to setting guidelines for scald injury prevention, his dedication to advancing the health of children has been recognized by his peers. Next month, Stanwick will receive the Lifetime Membership Award from the Canadian Pediatric Society. “Dr. Stanwick has contributed an impressive body of work which has had a significant impact on the lives of children and families on Vancouver Island, and this award aptly recognizes him for that achievement” said Dr. Perry Kendall, B.C. provincial health officer.

The Canadian Pediatric Society Lifetime Membership Award makes Stanwick one of few Canadians to hold lifetime memberships in two distinct professional organizations. He also holds lifetime membership status in the Canadian Public Health Association, where he has been recognized for making significant contributions to the advancement of public health. “As Island Health’s long-serving chief medical health officer, Stanwick is a tireless advocate for public health, most notably for the safety of children. As a pediatrician, he is very deserving of this award and we are very proud that he is being recognized by his peers in this way, ” said Dr. Brendan Carr, Island Health CEO. Recently, the UBC School of Popula-

tion and Public Health awarded him their George Elliot Award for lifetime achievement in public health. Stanwick has fellowships in pediatrics and public health, working tirelessly in both fields. Early in his public health career, he served as the provincial epidemiologist in Manitoba, where in 1990 he became medical health officer for the city of Winnipeg. Stanwick was medical health officer for the Capital Regional District from 1995 to 1997, a position that expanded to include director of research when the function amalgamated to the Capital Health Region in 1997. Victoria council directed transportation staff to study the need for lowering speed limits along several key arteries in the city last November. The recommendation from transportation manager Brad Dellebuur? Don’t do it. “Based on a review of operating speeds, and roadway features/physical environment, there is no technical data to support the reduction in speed limits on the arterials,” Dellebuur wrote in a report to council. The areas being considered for 40 km/hr speed limits are Richmond Road, Douglas Street south of Belleville Street; Bay Street and Gorge Road. Victoria mulls derelict Gorge boats Council is set to take action on permanently moored boats in the Gorge waterway, north of the Selkirk trestle, after ongoing complaints of unsightliness and water contamination. Staff are recommending the city develop new bylaws that would limit the use of the Gorge waterway to recreational activities and prohibit liveaboard use or long term anchoring of boats. The plan would also include applying to the province for a 10-year licence of occupation for the Gorge Waterway, after which the city could manage “nominal rent” for boat moorage in the area. The plan requires $126,000 spread over two years from the

city’s contingency fund.

City parks director leaving post early City of Victoria parks director Kate Friars departed city hall five months ahead of her scheduled retirement last week for a new job in Nova Scotia. Intended to measure residents’ quality of life, the survey takes into account a full range of social, health, environmental and economic considerations affecting citizens. Teachers who have a special way of getting their points across that make us feel good or look at things differently do so through personal connections. So who better to ask what makes a great grade school teacher than students who are living that experience daily? In continuing our look at outstanding educators, part of Black Press and Staples’ Great Teachers initiative, supported by Thrifty Foods, we heard from some well-spoken middle and high school students around the Capital Region. We hope the teachers on their list of favourites, those who are really making a difference, will be nominated for Great Teachers awards at vicnews.com/contests. Oak Bay High’s 2014 valedictorian Mohammed Abousaleh says the best teachers are those who capture students’ attention and “make every class, every hour, engaging.” Not only that, instructors who are organized also get high marks from this honour roll student. “When you’re making use of all the time you have in class, it kind of motivates you to look at other aspects of life,” he says. While he appreciates teachers who aren’t afraid to change their mind, and those who encourage students to draw their own conclusions on discussion points, there has to be balance between flexibility and structure. “One of my teachers is very strict in (that) homework is assigned every night and checked every day. I appreciate that, because it disciplines me in my own learning.” Direct involvement with students strikes a chord with some. Grade 9 Spencer middle school student Daniel St. Laurent, lit up when talking about a shop teacher who builds things and puts them up around the school. “I help him with some of his projects,” Daniel says. “(He also) helps people step out of their comfort zones and try different things.” Mixing things up also keeps things interesting, he adds. “One of my teachers teaches in three different ways. One day he’ll do it through video, another day it’ll be using worksheets and the next it’s talking lessons, having discussions.” Personal connections also allow teachers to make more in headway with individuals who may be having troubles in the classroom, says Spectrum Grade 11 student Dezy Manuel. “The best teachers go into a class where everyone is struggling and they make them better. They get people passionate about the subject and use that to their advantage,” she says. “I love teachers who can relate to a student. If they can’t relate (to their teacher) they’re not going to have that (same level of) interest in the subject.” Adds Sophie Adams, in Grade 11 at Edward

Milne Community School in Sooke: “To me a great teacher is someone who doesn’t consider themselves a teacher, but a mentor, and a mentor is someone who is passionate about what they’re teaching and develops great relationships with students.” Knowing more about individuals, such as whether they work a part-time job outside school and have a lot on their plate, is important, she says. Grade 9 Vic High student Avery Paul, who spent a year-and-a-half being home schooled, is big on relationships, especially given the way she learns. “I like to work at my own pace, I have my own specific learning style. I’m really visual and like to work with my hands. I like when a teacher allows me to be flexible with my learning style. That shows they care about their students.” Tristan Knapp-Fisher, in Grade 12 at Parkland secondary in North Saanich, agrees. “When you connect (with students), it’s almost like you’re a friend. You can get more of them,” he says. “If (students have) a sense that ‘the teacher really wants to help me,’ they’ll open up a bit. It’s about being a little more human instead of just having it be your job.” Students easily perceive when teachers are not entirely present, he adds. “It’s helpful when the student knows (the teacher is) not thinking about things they have to do (later); they’re being present and actually wanting to help.” Manuel, who serves as a teacher’s assistant in a learning strategies class, adds that excellent educators have something else that differentiates them from others. “They’re usually not just a great teacher, they’re usually just a really great person and they’re positive role models.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

An explosion of information

If there is an emerging theme to the 2010s, it is that many basic assumptions – no matter how cherished or long-held – are no longer enough to support our decision-making. Instead of some basic, underlying incontrovertible truth (possibly our most dangerous assumption), we are too often left only with an impression of truth, geared to our emotions and fueled by scads of lobbying dollars. Our responsibility, no matter how we wish to shirk it, is to stay informed and examine, critically, evidence from all sides of the issues. System can handle diluted bitumen Re: Columns by David Black, Bitumen spill threat is real (April 23) and Why B.C. needs an oil refinery (April 25). Continued safe marine and pipeline transport of hydrocarbons is in everybody’s interest so Canadians can realize value for resources and oil producers can continue to deliver jobs and economic benefits. No one wants a spill of any product at any time. The performance track record over the past 50 years is good, but even still, work is ongoing to improve prevention and ensure producers, transportation companies and spill-responders have the best information available to manage products safely and make the best plans possible for response, containment and clean-up in the event of an incident. Black’s articles incorrectly suggested the Canadian oil industry is not interested in the proposed refinery project and that transporting diluted bitumen is more risky than transporting other types of oil because of its chemical properties. Fact is, oil producers are seeking increased access to existing and new markets – in Canada, the United States and internationally – to satisfy market demand for increasing Canadian oil production. All options

to achieve that goal are worthy of study. And diluted bitumen – oil sands bitumen diluted with natural gas liquids that allow it to flow – is no more dangerous than other types of crude oil. Chemically, there’s nothing about diluted bitumen the transportation system cannot be prepared to manage. Whether it moves by pipelines or tankers, diluted bitumen meets all the same specifications and behaves the same as other crude oils. Oil floats on water if it has an API gravity above water’s 10 degree API gravity. Diluted bitumen has an API gravity of 20-22 degrees. Any type of oil spilled in water, eventually “weathers” and can be driven below the surface by waves or currents. Diluted bitumen behaves the same way. There have been several scientific studies completed on diluted bitumen. Earlier this year, the federal government released a research study that demonstrated diluted bitumen floats on salt water – even after evaporation and exposure to light. The study was commissioned by Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada as part of the

government’s plan to implement a world-class prevention, preparedness and response regime for marine transportation. wasn’t me. I’d slept the night before with wet hair and now it sprung out in all directions like a furry Russian hat. My eyes were puffy and a spot of dried coffee sat in the corner of my mouth. Danica, on the other hand, Lundy was bright and clean, with combed curly locks and little laces tied on perfect white shoes. Danica was nicely dressed in those days, but not in the way I had envisioned. I sort of thought that since I liked denim, I’d dress my kids in little denim pants, little jean shirts and jackets. Anything else would be yellow, green or blue. At all costs, I would avoid pink, and I would never, ever purchase a frilly dress. Then, as I wheeled Danica down a bumpy road in a stroller one day, someone asked the heart-ripping question: “How old is he?” He! So out came the pink sleepers. Out came the barrettes, out came the frills. At Danica’s first Easter

For some reason, I’ve been thinking about the “baby years.” Maybe it’s all those puffy pink blossoms triggering memories of a time when everything seemed coloured in pretty pastels. Maybe it’s Facebook. I keep Susan seeing younger friends posting baby pictures and it reminds me that the world was once very, very small: about the size of my babies’ eyes. I’m grateful Facebook didn’t exist in the baby years. I’d have been beyond obnoxious: here’s a photo of Danica looking at a tree; here’s a photo of Sierra sitting in a chair; here’s a photo of the girls smiling – it’s a bit blurry, but can you see the new tooth popping out of Sierra’s gums? In those years, little existed beyond babies. I recall arriving at my parent’s home one morning with my firstborn, a burbling baby Danica. We walked into the bathroom and there I was in the mirror. background. Life was still and gentle … and pink. One day we joined other new parents in a coffee shop and for a split second I emerged from baby bliss long enough to notice our strange antics. We made weird faces and noises. We gurgled, burped, blew, bubbled and sang unlikely little songs. We performed face gymnastics and body contortions – anything to elicit a beatific baby smile. One of the burly, masculine men at our table said, “Try this.” He leaned toward Danica and started clucking. Soon we were all clucking. Then Danica swatted at Sandy, and I murmured offhandedly, “You’re supposed to honk when she touches your nose.” So Sandy honked. Then we all honked. Twenty odd years later, the world is a little bigger and things aren’t so pink (more like green, if I consider the flow of money from my wallet). But I’ve discovered that your babies never really stop being the centre of your universe. Um, just check my Facebook page.

Eleven-yearold Anastasia Bird enjoys all her Grade 5 subjects at Ecole Millstream elementary equally. She played on the school basketball team and will soon try out for track and field. She’s very busy with Girl Guides outside school and is a Sparks leader within that group. She loves to camp and has attended several regional Guides gatherings. She recently received a scholarship to St. Margaret’s, where she’ll attend school in Grade 6 this September.

How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

That’s tough one. It’s a delicate balance between work and kids. Owning my own company takes up a lot of time. On the weekends, anytime we have together is family time. But in the evening after I put the kids to bed, it’s a good time to catch up with my hubby and regroup. Even sitting with my friend and watching TV is like a mini vacation.

What are you reading right now? What do you read with your son?

Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, an adventure-style novel. It’s a time-travel book based in Scotland with a lot of folklore. With the kids, we read something different every day. We’ve been doing the Barefoot Books. They come with a CD and you don’t need to censor them, which is good. They sit and listen to stories for hours.

What is your favourite family activity to share together?

I would say going for walks and bike rides is pretty huge for us. We just recently started skateboarding as well. We really enjoy a big plate of nachos together. Going down to

the Causeway and watching the entertainers is also a fun one. We like to maximize our time together.

The part of your day you look forward to the most?

Dinner time. Coming home and having dinner with my family. Generally speaking, my husband will have dinner on the go. We sit down together and decide whether we’re going to have an adventure that night. I feel sometimes that we’re starting to live separate lives, so that coming together time is important. Also first thing in the morning, when the kids jump into bed and discussing what we’re going to do that day.

The seeds of literacy can be sown at any age. As such, many programs in Greater Victoria help parents give their children an early start on reading. Jan Dupuis, a literacy outreach co-ordinator in the Capital Region, helps various organizations and families connect and collaborate. The Greater Victoria Public Library and the READ Society, for example, host a range of programs for families. They target children of any age, Dupuis said, though many focus specifically on the five-and-under group. “Family literacy is focused on parents engaging with their children right from birth with literacy activities,” Dupuis said. Programs focus on reading, writing and numbers at early ages then move to learning with technology later on. Other pro-

grams also encourage singing and cooking together as families, along with other activities. “Literacy really involves those tasks that increase the levels of skill and confidence and selfesteem and really connect the family,” Dupuis said. The Parent-Child Mother Goose program offered at various library branches and community centres brings parents together with their young children to share stories and music. The READ Society hosts the Noisy Kids Reading Club, an after-school program offered through school districts that sees children who could benefit from extra literacy support learn through reading, theatre and educational games. Shantael Sleight is literacy outreach co-ordinator with Your Literacy Connection Westshore. “We’re always looking to get a better understanding on where the needs are, where the gaps

are and what is already in place in terms of improving literacy at any level, “ she said. Books for Breakfast sees families come together with facilitators to read books, sing songs and enjoy a snack, while parents learn effective literary skills to teach their children. Each family gets a new book at the end of each session. The Family Learning Tour, a one-day event in January, sees families learn about informal reading, such as labels and recipes, along with the value of play as a learning tool. The program runs throughout the West Shore. “(Parents) have grown to love reading with their children and showing them how much fun it can be,” Sleight said. “They feel more confident to get out there and try something new and learn with their children.” Visit learnnowvictoria.com or sookewestshoreliteracy.ca to learn more.

When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in an accident and had all original parts. I left thinking the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might have the bike’s history on hand. It never hurts to double check. The myth of displacements Many new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader

write me asking what he should get. He’s 6-foot-two-inches tall and 220 pounds with long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. He wanted something manageable for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t going to fit him. Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Davidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Suzuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher displacement but they’re going to be work better with his body. I recommend buying a bike you are comfortable on. Test rides Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend the extra $100 to $200 to have a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting onto. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

You’ve got your licence and proper gear, now all you need is a motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Budget Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing when it comes to your new ride. Particularly if you’re buying used. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike happens to be a nightmare and costs a fortune on repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. New or used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warranties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget. Private sale or from a dealership? Buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike online. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VIN It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail

The Audi A7 a luxury fuel sipper Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the mainstream Volkswagen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI engines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing right. The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25 to 30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look for. Looks The body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, in combination

Oversized is also a good way to describe the A7s grille, which is framed by an aggressive set of headlamps and deep front spoiler. The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired. Inside The downside to the

swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for full-sized adult passengers. The reality is that many professionals who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best materials are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market.

Drive Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that

power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go. Verdict The Audi A7 is a lovely car filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige that all come at a price. Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several years of driving thanks to the improved fuel

Steve Martin goes country at Royal Theatre Expect comedy, sweet bluegrass as Martin’s first music tour in decades hits Victoria

Steve Martin is a writer, actor, author, standup comedian, master of the Twitter-verse and 68-year-old Grammy Award-winning bluegrass musician who has been developing his banjo style since he was 16. Despite the credits, that latter entry on his CV is one oftovershadowed by his prolific screen career. This month, Islanders have a chance to see the creative chameleon at two nights of music and comedy in Nanaimo and Victoria May 11 and 12. Martin spoke with the News about his ever-evolving career, the musiccomedy connection and Love Has Come for You, a 13-track collaboration with Edie Brickell, written through a process of emailing iPhone recordings while the two Texans were living on opposite coasts. *** NN: The concert is pitched as a night of music and comedy, what will the audience be in store for? SM: All of us are dedicated to doing the best and most entertaining show possible. I always try to blend the comedy with the music. We do serious songs. We do funny songs. We do a lot of chat, talk. Since incorporating Edie, the music has become much more lyrical than the type of music we were playing before. So, we might string three songs together then do some comedy. I think the show – whether you are aware of bluegrass or not – I’ve found it just doesn’t matter to people. They seem to enjoy the music, just hearing it live on stage. The

musicians I work with, The Steep Canyon Rangers, are really, really skilled and they do a song on their own. It’s just a big variety show. NN: What’s the experience of sending off your personal work and receiving an entirely new take on it? Was there any tension between what you had hoped for the songs and how she interpreted them? SM: (Edie Brickell) always improved it, because a banjo song

is just a banjo song. It could be a good banjo song, but it’ll always be a banjo song, so when she started adding lyrics and making the songs really viable, I loved it. Also, I never knew what she would come up with and I always liked what she was doing, so it was one of those rare things. Now we have much more give and take. She’ll say: ‘Can this chord change and I’ll say ‘Yes.’ And I’ll say ‘I think this line is a little hard to understand’ and she’ll fix it. NN: Has the philosophy behind choosing your projects and your career path shifted over the course of your career? SM: Yes. I was always involved in writing. I was going to say that I’ve become much more directly

a writer, but there’s been nothing conscious done in my career, about I want to do this now or that. It’s always been on a train that’s moving along and events happen that lead me in a different direction. There’s no conscious effort. It’s just my need. When I was doing more movies, I’d say: ‘I need a screenplay. I have an idea.’ And on Roxanne I tried to get other people to write it and no one would do it, so I just

did it myself. And that was my first solo screenplay. NN: How does self-consciousness or confidence in your art change as you move across genres? SM: I just don’t worry about it. When I started playing a banjo on stage I thought: ‘I know what this looks like. It looks like a movie actor trying to become a rock and roll star,’ But I knew that wasn’t what I was doing and it didn’t seem to matter to people. When I wrote a novel, it seemed to be accepted rather than laughed at. I don’t mean it was always wonderful praise, but it was taken seriously and not as an amateur trying to spread his wings. So I’ve been really lucky in what I’ve branched out in and haven’t

received a terrible backlash. NN: How does developing your own style or sound with the banjo relate to developing your own voice in comedy? SM: I very consciously, in comedy, tried to develop my own voice. I knew that was extremely important and that’s why when I was about 19 I got rid of every joke in my act and I started fresh with everything being something I wrote myself. I thought that was really important, that the audience couldn’t really

have seen anything like this before. In terms of playing music, playing the banjo, there were so many great role models. It’s a lot of work just to learn how to play it, let alone develop your own style. Lately ... I have developed my own style and people can hear it. They know it’s me and I’m emphasizing things that I loved about the banjo when I first started playing, which are things like its melancholy, its drive. PRIVATE INSURERS REACT TO CMHC’S REGULATION CHANGES Genworth – Canada’s largest private residential mortgage insurers, founded in 1995, has decided not to follow suit with CMHC’s product changes. Announced last Friday, Genworth will make one adjustment, however. The maximum number of units allowable under the vacation/secondary home program will be reduced from two units to one unit. There will no changes to the business for self program. Prospective home buyers in Victoria may have a difficult time sealing the deal at month’s end when the country’s national housing agency does away with two insurance products – a move that could spark repercussions across the buyers’ and rental markets alike. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada’s leading provider of mortgage loan insurance and mortgage-backed securities, on April 25 announced the discontinuation of its second home and self-employed without a third-party income validation products. After May 30, homeowners with one CMHC-insured mortgage will have to sell said property in order to become eligible for a second. Additionally, self-employed applicants must have two years of unaudited, independent thirdparty validation of their income, as opposed to stating income of year’s past to qualify. While the Crown Corporation claims just three per cent of their business came via such products in 2013 and has no comment on what effects the change may spark, at least one local mortgage planner is willing to venture an educated guess. Kam Brar, mortgage planner with Auxilium Mortgage Corporation in Colwood, puts forward a typical example of a young couple who has bought a new condo a few years ago when the Victoria market was at its peak. “Now you decide to go sell that condo, however, for whatever reason – let’s say it’s not worth

what you owe, or any other reasons – you can’t get out of it right now and you decide you just want to rent it and then buy the other property,” Brar says. Your choices: either sell it, or you live in it, or you find a 20 per cent down payment for the new purchase, to avoid CMHC. “If you’re not turning them into rentals, you’re either going to be living in it or selling. Most of these upgrades are usually condos,” Brar said. “That’s usually the stepping stone to the next property purchase. We’ll see what happens because they’re the feeder pool for the whole market. If you look at it as an eco-cycle. It starts with a small purchase and you move your way up gradually.” Should many potential landlords decide to stay in their condos now, at a time when Victoria has a fairly high number of new condominiums recently completed, Brar says, a lack of used inventory could be quite helpful to developers at this time. With the changes still a matter of weeks away, CMHC isn’t willing to venture a guess at the possible side effects of the change. “Basically we want to help Canadians meet their housing needs and our insurance business activities need to contribute to the stability of the housing markets and finance systems,” said Charles Sauriol, media relations for CMHC. “This is a business decision that we made and again, it’s just looking at our products and how they fit with our core objectives.” Brar, underlining his view that CMHC’s products were intended to enable first-time buyers, not future land barons, has his own hypotheses on the timing of the changes. “I think they are hearing from a lot of worldwide economists that the Canadian housing mar-

the idea of a big luxury car but also want something a bit sportier will enjoy the dynamic stance, especially combined with the oversized sports wheels. Oversized is also a good way to describe the A7s grille, which is framed by an aggressive set of headlamps and deep front spoiler. The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired. Inside The downside to the swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and

big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sportback, with a much higher roof for full-sized adult passengers. The reality is that many professionals who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best materials are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market. Drive Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that power but also impressive fuel

economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go. Verdict The Audi A7 is a lovely car filled

with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige that all come at a price. Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several years of driving thanks to the improved fuel economy. This technology is also available in other, less expensive models, so don’t be

too shocked by the starting price. One thing Audi does not have is a four-cylinder diesel for the smaller and less expensive models, something both BMW and Mercedes offer. I suspect there will be one coming in short order, but for now the A7 is a prime example of Audi’s expansion into diesel transportation. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Five commonly replicated classic cars Rob Sass

The classic car world is full of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” stories of people who had the opportunity to buy something when it was affordable only to see it sail out of reach. If you didn’t buy a Shelby Cobra during the Nixon administration for 10 grand, the only alternative for most people today is a replica. Replicas are all good fun unless someone tries to pass one off as the real deal. Here are five of the most common classic car counterfeits. 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: The Cobra might just be the most desirable sports car on the planet. Not coincidentally, it’s also the most replicated. With bulging, macho good looks, a big block Ford V-8, side pipes, shattering performance and only around 300 originals made, it was a certainty from almost the beginning that supply and demand would never be equal. The originals have always commanded good money – by the late 1970s, they were approaching $50,000, and around that time, cottage industries sprang up everywhere to build Cobra replicas. Some were quite good while others bordered on

1935 Auburn 851 Speedster replica. undriveable. A lot depended on the skill (or lack thereof) of the builder. Even Carroll Shelby, the car’s original creator, got into the act. Some argue that the 1992 Dodge Viper was the ultimate tribute to the Cobra. Fortunately, it’s really hard to pass off one of the replicas as the real deal, the

real thing. Real 550 Spyders are $4 million or so and Speedsters can bring more than $300,000. Replicas can be had for around $30,000, which combined with the fact that they’re quite fun to drive, explains their appeal. 1961 250 GT Ferrari California Spyder: Before Ferrari got serious about cracking down on violations of its intellectual property rights, its vehicles were among the most commonly knocked-off on the planet. A bogus California Spyder built by a company called Modena Industries shot to fame as the hero car in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. About 50 were built between 1987 and 1989, before Ferrari said “basta!” Real ones start at about $9 million. Ferrari 308 GTS: After the Ferris Bueller car, the Ferrari with the most screen exposure was the red Ferrari 308 GTS that Tom Selleck drove on the TV show Magnum P.I. Conveniently, as the 308 reached the apex of its fame via the TV show, Pontiac came out with the mid-engine Fiero, whose space frame design combined with non-stressed removable plastic body panels made it the ideal platform for conversions designed to simulate far more expensive mid-engine

company Intermeccanica makes very high quality Speedster replicas, while Beck in the U.S. has a great reputation for making 550 Spyder replicas. Because the originals were alloy and steel, respectively, and the replicas are fibreglass, there’s no danger of one being passed off as the

exotics. The most famous (or perhaps infamous) of these was the MERA, a replica of the Ferrari 308. While the proportions were off and the interior screamed cheap, we suspect that most of the then 20-something barflies taken in by the guy with gold chains and a polyester Hawaiian shirt driving the bogus 308 never suspected a thing. 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster: Other than a slew of neoclassics that vaguely replicate Mercedes-Benzes of the 1930s, pre-war cars are seldom faked. But the Iconic Indiana-built Auburn Speedster (along with its equally stunning sister the Cord 810/812) is an exception. I’ve lost count of how many companies have built replicas over the last 40 years are so. Like the Cobras, some are quite good and some exhibit the build quality of a Sochi hotel room. A replica Speedster features in the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

enjoy the drive. It is a powerful and very luxurious vehicle, a real treat to drive. I would like to see a little more headroom and the six-speed transmission seemed to have a mind of its own.
