Aquatic centre set to open after May long weekend By Treena Mielke It’s full steam ahead for the Rimbey outdoor pool, and while the weather is not co-operating for a May long weekend opening, residents can expect to the aquatic centre to be open the next weekend. Recreation director Peter Stenstrom is optimistic this year will see a great improvement in the pool’s operation.
“I think it will be run better than it ever has,” he said. “Right now all hands are on deck getting it ready and new hot tubs are being put in. They are brand new, so they should work just fine.” The spray park, which was not operational last year, due to a myriad of problems will run this year on a timer which will simplify its operations, said Stenstrom. More effective drainage has also been in-
stalled in the dressing rooms, he said. Landscaping is to be completed in front of the pool this spring. Kira More, who has managed the aquatic centre for two consecutive years has returned this year. “It’s good to be back and I really enjoy working outdoors,” she said. More has a couple of new activities in the
works, which she is hoping to begin when the weather co-operates. I’m hoping to offer after school lessons this year for the month of June. We also will be having a separate seniors’ swim where people over 65 can go to the pool and enjoy a swim. As well, we will be having a test run to see if it’s feasible to reserve a time slot at the pool for people with disabilities.”

The Rimbey Review, May 13, 2014 3
Reader responds to MLA Anglin’s accusations Dear Editor In reference to Mr. Anglin’s letter in the May 6, 2014 Rimbey Review. To start with, Mr. Anglin with his epistle of approximately 2,000 words has shown disrespect to the Rimbey Review and its readers by the lack of courtesy to keep his Letter to the Editor to a maximum of 500 words. In an attempt to raise his own public profile, it appears to me that Mr. Anglin is engaging in the same unhelpful rhetoric as he is accusing others of doing. Please note the following remarks as expressed by Mr. Anglin in his letter: ill-informed
local politicians --- naïve local politicians --- perverted sense of obligation --- ineffectual leadership --- operated incompetently and unprofessionally --- need to quit bellyaching. Also note that in October of 2012 Mr. Anglin sent an e-mail to Paul McLauchlin stating in part as follows: “On October 23, 2012 the Legislative Assembly of Alberta will convene for its fall session. At that time I will request on the floor of the Assembly that the Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Associate Minister of Seniors, and the Minister of Health conduct a full investigation into the competency and fitness of the Rimoka Housing Foundation Board’s ability to manage
Announcement overlooked says MLA Dear Editor, Beneath all the recent fanfare of Alison Redford’s resignation, and Alberta’s newly appointed premier Dave Hancock’s apology of mistakes were made but not by me there was an innocuous announcement that was overlooked, and it has significant consequences for Alberta’s taxpayers. Not too long after the newly appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs announced $13.3 million for a new Rimbey Senior’s Lodge, on April 17 he also announced that the Senior Housing Boards across the province would have access to Alberta’s Social Housing Fund. Alberta’s Social Housing Fund provides long-term fixed interest rates lower than normal market rates. For decades Alberta’s Housing Authorities like the Rimoka Board had to borrow money from the private sector. Giving the hous-
ing boards access to the Alberta’s Social Housing Fund will save taxpayers millions of dollars. Joe Anglin MLA Rimbey - Rocky Mountain House - Sundre NEED A

Mr Anglin has not fulfilled his
own promises regarding the e-mail to Paul McLauchlin. I believe Mr. Anglin should be looking at his own record before he starts criticizing others. Mr. Anglin also stated in the Alberta Legislature (Hansard November 6, 2012) “I don’t trust anybody”. Why should we trust this man? Aubrey Finnen

For all intents and purposes it looks like Rimbey may receive some dollars for a new seniors’ facility. Leaking the news ahead of time was a grave error in judgment, and not a stepping-stone to instant popularity, but the deed has been done. Treena Mielke As every politician, evOn The Other Side ery leader, indeed, every person in any position of power knows, there is a process to follow, a protocol, so to speak, before any issue, particularly one that has a monetary figure attached to it, can happen! However, in this instance, for whatever reason, that process was disrupted, causing instant dissention in the ranks. Of course, not only politicians have been known to break the chain of command, speak out of turn, and upset the apple cart by leaking information. In some instances, this is not a bad thing, but necessary in the face of evil and discord. Years ago, it was a meek and mild reporter who worked for a little newspaper in Eckville, Alberta who dared to check out in-camera talks about a school teacher named Jim Keegstra. The information he uncovered was staggering, and, not only did it put Eckville on the map, it brought to light that the discrimination against Jews, was in fact, being taught at the public high school. In that particular instance, following the proper channels was not a good thing and the reporter unearthed a practice that was tainting the minds of our school children. It goes without saying, the practice needed to be stopped and the teacher fired. It was stopped, the teacher fired and, no doubt, the young reporter went on to bigger and better things all because he dared to break the rules of process and protocol. However, leaking information about funding for a new lodge, while far less dramatic than breaking a story about a teacher who taught young people to
hate Jews, simply did not have a positive effect. It did, in fact, have the complete opposite effect. It pitted politician against politician. It caused the Rimoka Housing Board to defend themselves when they were only following the rules of respecting confidentiality and protocol. And, once again, it caused a lot of mud slinging and people bashing that has been referred to by a somewhat disgusted reader as schoolyard politics played out by junior high students. As a newspaper, the Rimbey Review has a responsibility to allow its readers to express their opinion through letters to the editor. But, people don’t want to read any more crap, or, in the words of one esteemed reader, schoolyard politics. And that is fair! And so, as residents of a community which has been said time and time again to have ‘lots of potential’ I urge you, the residents and readers of the Rimbey Review, to speak out. Tell us about it. What is good about Rimbey? Help the Rimbey Review make a difference in a positive way!
What about the new Agrim Centre? Looking good, isn’t it! What about the walking trails? Kudos to the last council for making that happen? What about the new coffee shop that opened on Main Street? Kudos to the owners for taking a little bit of Rimbey’s past and bringing it back for us all to enjoy in a positive and unique way! And, there is the Christian School who held an amazing fundraiser complete with a free barbecue! And the Outreach School who took a group of students to California to give them a taste of education complete with plenty of fun, excitement and the steadying influence of adult chaperones who took it upon themselves to make it happen. And, the Rimoka Housing Board! Congratulations to the board, headed by Paul McLauchlin for keeping a low profile, while working diligently to make a vision shared by a few, become a reality for many! Good job!
All about me, myself and I and why I like who I am When it comes to myself and the person I am, there is a lot to know. My interests far exceed the norm and I can’t be put into one particular group of people. I feel as though I have wrote many article discussing, and sharing my point of view on a variety of different topics and teen issues. But I’ve noticed that I haven’t written many articles in regards to myself and my interests. With that being said I’m going to tell my readers a bit more about Miss Taylor Jolene Snell; what my interests are, what I do in my spare time and the type of young lady I am. I have always been a free spirited person. I don’t let the troubles I’ve experienced weigh me down, regardless of the extent of the situation. Always keeping my chin lifted up. By putting a smile on my face I’m able too see beauty in everyone and everything, and keep positive. Even with the hurt and sadness I’ve been though or have been associated with I forgave and forgot. Letting the things from my past and even present restrict what I have to look forward to in my future, would just be plain unfair. Over the years I have been also rebellious, but the good kind. I am always one to stand out, and dare to wear what I want, shave my hair off if I want and say whatever is on my mind. I don’t regret a thing I have said or done because it has made me one amazing young girl. Before when people asked me what I was in-
terested in or the type of person I was, my mind floated off and tried to piece anything and everything together that I liked, did, or just was. Being asked a simple question such as that was confusing for me! It seemed Taylor Snell physically impossible Work Experience to tell someone all that I was, without sounding a little ‘funny’ upstairs. I am all these kinds of people, I am a wallflower, free spirit, hippie, misfit, athlete, rebel ‘at times’, you name it, I’m a little bit of it. All of the many different walks of life I’ve been exposed to, also the struggles I’ve had to fit in as a young girl has shaped and molded me into a very mixed end product! I have picked up such a wide variety of interests and styles that when I look in a mirror all I see is a Neapolitan ice cream. But I couldn’t be more pleased, I have accepted myself and I embrace my uniqueness. There are so many things I do that I’m sure many of you also enjoy or have enjoyed in the past. Such as walking for hours with no real des-
tination, writing lyrics and stories, whether they be fiction or non fiction are some things I do all too often. To this day I still believe my middle name should have been random, because everyday all the time, I’m doing something to make myself and/or others laugh or smile. It makes me feel like a million bucks when I put a smile on someone’s face. Volunteer work is quite pleasant for me. I have done tons over the years; at carnivals, libraries and day camps. So needless to say I like helping others. When it comes to music and style that is still difficult to explain. Bands such as Black Sabbath, Cage the Elephant, Tokyo police club and The White Strips all are amazing and there are all quite different from each other. That just shows more of my many different sides. Style is fun. I go crazy! I throw skinny jeans, a Nirvana T-shirt, a whole bunch of tacky jewelry, and a ’40s styled hat all together and call it done. That’s just my every day look. For the longest time I was very confused with myself because of how ‘out there’ I was, but now I love myself and all the weird fun and crazy things I do. I live everyday as it comes, and with every breath I take I leave behind a little bit of love in every place, everything and every person. That’s the biggest thing people need to know about me. Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most. - Buddha

Ponoka County’s CAO clarifies dates regarding land deals By Treena Mielke A proposed new seniors’ lodge in Rimbey is still in the works, but changes and detours along the way appear to have caused some unrest and political upheaval. Ponoka County, who has agreed to purchase the land for the project, has come up against
some unforeseen obstacles, which now appear to be resolved. The lodge was first proposed to be built on land owned by Johnson Estates located west of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. However, the town opted to bow out of continuing negotiations with Johnson Estates about

servicing, which, in turn, caused the county to drop the land deal. The county was then approached by a local developer to purchase land located south of Hwy. 53 behind the Best Western for the proposed lodge. Since that time, the county has been brought to task by Wild Rose MLA Joe Anglin for not acting in good faith and negotiating on one land deal before the other deal was dead in the water. However, Ponoka County CAO Charlie Cuthford has taken exception to those accusations. “I received a letter from Alvin Johnson on Feb. 4 confirming the release of the county to a sale agreement. I signed a letter of intent with SJC on Feb. 19. Prior to receiving that letter I had never had a conversation with Stan Cummings. Frankly, I didn’t know him from a bale of hay.” Cuthford said he has worked in municipal government for 38 years, 28 of which has been spent with Ponoka County. During his time with the county, he has observed
turmoil in many municipalities including Rimbey. Some of this turmoil has caused him to shake his head in frustration, as he believes them to be futile. “From the outside looking in, I have seen great debates over such issues as libraries and now a facility for seniors. What’s next? The maternity ward at the hospital.” Such debates are a waste of time and accomplish nothing, he said. Accusations and name calling makes him think of American politics. “That is sad to me. Such dissention destroys the fabric of the whole community.” Cuthford said the volunteer spirit of Rimbey residents is outstanding and all levels of government are elected by the same people, who obviously want the very best for their community. “Let’s just all get over ourselves and get on with what we’re all paid to do,” he said.

Dialysis patient receives treatment in Wetaskiwin By Treena Mielke A Bentley area dialysis patient is continuing to make the trek to Wetaskiwin for treatment, although he has been told he could return to Red Deer. Paul Norvila was sent to Wetaskiwin a few weeks ago to receive dialysis. “For the past month we have rearranged our lives around a schedule that has Paul having his treatments on different days at Wetaskiwin than he had been in Red Deer,” said June Norvila. “Paul likes the days Wetaskiwin has given him better and wants to continue with those days. After over 11 years we actually have a real two-day weekend by having no dialysis on a Saturday.” Norvila said Red Deer Hospital will not offer that same schedule to him and he would have to go back to having dialysis every Saturday afternoon. “Even though his old chair has somehow been offered back to him, and they say it will remain there for him, we have chosen to keep going to Wetaskiwin for the time being even though the long trips are very tiring, time consuming, and costly.” However, Norvila said Paul will eventually
come back to Red Deer. “We will be returning to Red Deer as we definitely do not want to keep driving to Wetaskiwin, especially when the weather turns bad.” Alberta Health Services stated, in a press release April 25, additional dialysis capacity will be added in the short term at Red Deer Regional Hospital; a solution that has been in the works for several weeks. This additional capacity means that three Red Deer patients currently travelling for treatment will now receive dialysis in their community. AHS is working hard to find a solution that will provide further dialysis capacity in Red Deer, the press release states. But Norvila said notification of such a solution has not yet been released. “We did visit with some dialysis fiends at Red Deer dialysis and they say nothing has changed as far as increasing capacity goes and they still haven’t heard of any plan yet.” Norvila added she was told by a staff member that everybody’s schedule may change in September.

By Treena Mielke An announcement by Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin that $13.3 million is up for grabs to build a new lodge in Rimbey has still not been confirmed. However, the announcement has resulted in bringing to light information regarding the proposed lodge. Denis Beesley, president of Bethany Group, who is the CAO for Rimoka Housing Foundation said the process of building a new lodge is complicated and involves players on a municipal, provincial and federal level. And while he said obtaining the funding would be exciting, there is a formal process to be followed. “We need to get all the players in the same room and we need to get input from the seniors. It is their home. It is them who will be the most impacted and it is important we let them know first what is going on.” Beesley said Alberta Social Housing Corporation, a Crown cooperation of the provincial government, will own the project, if it goes ahead. The Crown corporation has been in existence for several years. Municipal Affairs receives money from the Corporation which is used for such projects as new and renovated lodges. Money is also obtained from The Federal Government to build new lodges. “The proposed Rimbey project will belong to the Social Housing Corporation,” he said. “It is a complicated process, and nothing happens too quickly,” he said. Once the funding is in place, he
said Rimoka and Bethany Group will be the agents who will work with the Social Housing Corporation to begin the process of building the lodge. Plans now in the wings include renovating part of the existing lodge and building a new lodge to allow for 80 or more units. Beesley said the cost of the project has not yet been determined. “$13.3 million has been bandied around, but prices always fluctuate.” While plans are in the infancy state and no formal announcement has been made, Beesley is looking ahead optimistically. “It’s exciting. When it happens it will be a positive for the community and we are looking forward to seeing the process begin.” Recently Anglin, in a press release dated April 15, said he had received confirmation from the Acting Minister of Municipal Affairs, Greg Weadick that the community of Rimbey and the Rimoka Housing Board had received $13.3 million for a new seniors lodge in Rimbey. But Emily Woods, press secretary for the Minister said Weadick never confirmed that information with Joe Anglin. However, she said the government is prepared to make a statement at a later date. “Redeveloping senior lodges is a priority for the government and an announcement on funding for projects will be coming the near future,” she said. Plans for proposed new lodge Continued from page 8 Rimoka board chairman Paul McLauchlin agreed Anglin’s announcement was premature. “While an announcement is imminent, there are critical pieces to the decision, funding and approval process, that have not been met. Funding for rural senior’s lodge renewal for projects like Rimbey involve federal funding and we must respect the communications protocol in that funding agreement.” The Rimoka Housing Foundation was created under the Homes for the Aged Act in 1959. Its purpose is to provide seniors and social housing services in the County of Ponoka and the towns of Rimbey and Ponoka.

The real excitement comes in seeing new and returning customers who have not tried out one of the many varieties of products in the store. In an effort to showcase the many items the store carries the Melliger’s are hosting an open-house, the Taste of Switzerland, on Saturday May 17.

GREENWOOD Arnold 1934 - 2014
ELLSWORTH Oct. 9, 1911 ~ May 4, 2014 Harry I. Ellsworth of Rimbey, Alberta passed away with family at his side at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the age of 102 years. Harry was the only child of John Edward and Bessie (Poling) Ellsworth of the Forshee area. He was raised on the farm and attended the Chapel School, followed by two years at the Bentley High School. Harry then decided to farm full-time with his father so he bought a quarter section of land just west of Gull Lake, and worked to clear and break it. He later purchased the quarter west of that, as well as bush pasture land. In 1938, Harry married Clara Massing of the Ponoka area, who had taught school at the Chapel School and boarded with his parents. They moved to the ‘Craig Place’ where they mixed farmed and raised a family of three sons and one daughter. Harry served on the Forshee Hall Board and on the Blindman Valley REA, working to bring rural electricity to that area. In 1964, Harry and Clara sold the Craig place and moved a quarter mile south to the Kreugar place, residing there until 1974, at which time they then settled into Rimbey. Harry continued to farm the lake land for a few more years, enjoying the wildlife and his lunches in the field. In 2004, Harry moved to Parkland Manor which was his home for more than nine years, and in early 2014 he became a resident of Continuing Care. Harry loved to visit with friends and family, go for country drives, and visit the farms and the lake. He was often seen walking east of town to the railroad tracks and around town, until his eyesight failed and he could no longer enjoy his outings. Harry will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his three sons, Orville of Rimbey; Ken (Meryl) of Edmonton; and Les, also of Edmonton; and his daughter, Carol (Lawrence) Jaffray of Rimbey; as well as eleven grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and one great, great grandson. Harry was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Bessie; his beloved wife, Clara in 1993; two infant grandsons; and a special daughter-in-law. A Public Funeral Service in Honour of Harry’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Interment followed in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Harry’s Memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5H 4K1; to the David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the charity of one’s choice.
