Children’s Health doling out $2.2 million in grants
END OF AN ERA
Eight local groups among Vancouver Island organizations to receive funding Erin Haluschak Record Staff
Kathy Segriff knows firsthand how programs for children and youth can make a difference when facing a major medical or health issue. Segriff, a Comox Valley mom, utilized Jeneece Place — a home away from home for families who travel to Victoria for their child’s medical care — when her son Nikko, 3, was in hospital. “All of a sudden you have other families around you that are going through their own challenges and their own ways of coping and dealing. You have a different kind of support,” she explained Thursday. Segriff serves as an example of the success for programs and facilities like Jeneece Place which are funded by the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. The foundation announced last week it will distribute $2,254,253 in funding to programs which improve the health of children and youth on Vancouver Island. Eight organizations from Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland and Campbell River received grants.

It was a sad day on Cliffe Avenue Saturday afternoon, as Safeway staff and management said goodbye to each other and to the community. The grocery store closed its doors for a final time Saturday at 6 p.m., marking an end to more than 80 years of business in Courtenay. The store gave back to the community one last time, at the end of the business day, as the Comox Valley Food Bank was the benefactor of all the remaining produce. In the top photo, a Safeway staff member loads the food bank’s van. To the right, a staff member locks the doors to officially mark the end of an era.

KATHY SEGRIFF and her son Nikko, 3. “The partners really make a difference in the kids lives,” said Linda Hughes, CHF president and chief executive officer. “The programs range from mental health and support, family support, therapy for kids with special needs and of course, Island Health programs across the Island.” The funding will provide support to 38,547 children, she added. In the Comox Valley, the Comox Valley Child Development Association (CVCDA) and the Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society were among the organizations to receive funding. Lorraine Aitken, executive director of CVCDA, explained the funds will go directly to purchase pediatric equipment for a new room in their facility. ... see FUNDING ■ A3

Comox holds National Day of Honour service Terry Farrell Record Staff
More than 100 soldiers and civilians attended 19 Wing Comox’s commemoration service in recognition of the National Day of Honour on Friday, May 9, to officially mark the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan. The ceremony paid tribute to all those who served in the conflict, and included a benediction from Padre George Helou, a moment of silence for those who perished and an address by, among others, Afghanistan veteran Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret’d) Dave Berry, who served as a member of the Strategic Advisory Team during the conflict. Berry said it’s important that Canadians recognize the positives that were achieved through the military’s work during the Afghanistan conflict. “As times goes on and you get some of those Monday morning quarterbacks secondguessing what we did in Afghanistan, they don’t realize what the country was [like] at the time we went over, and all the good work we have done,” he said. “I hear too many reports that the Taliban are still there, etcetera, etcetera, but that’s a fact of life and we have to get over that. We still did great work in Afghanistan. There are more kids

They weren’t given these opportunities to explore and express themselves; it was reading, writing and arithmetic for them. So, they’re experiencing modern schooling.” Valley View kindergarten teacher Debra Fullerton said this program has been one of the most rewarding experiences in her career, and her students have

A pilot program bringing young and old together to create art will run again next year due to this year’s success. Berwick Comox Valley and School District 71 partnered to bring Valley View kindergarten students to the retirement community each week throughout the school year to take art class alongside Berwick residents. Berwick hosted a Mother’s Day tea Thursday with the Berwick residents, the students and their mothers and grandmothers, during which district director of instruction for elementary schools Allan Douglas spoke about the program’s success. “We started with a handful of our residents, two, three, four, and at the last count when I was there we were up to about 15 residents,” Douglas told the large dining room of people. “It’s just such a delight to learn from them (residents), and the energy between the little ones and our residents has been so unbelievably powerful. “I want to thank each and every

School career info night
Real Estate Made Easy Real Estate Your Way
Learn more about BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint Renee Andor Record Staff
The Comox Valley School District will hold a career information night to discuss career paths for secondary students, and the direction set out by BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint. The career information night will run from 7:15 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 at G.P. Vanier Secondary School. Parents of students in Grades 9 to 12 are encouraged to attend, according to school district career programs co-ordinator Randy Grey. “That’s where parents can learn more about the blueprint and the direction that we’re going, and what’s available for their kids,” says Grey. “A big portion of this is that parents need to also be on board with this career planning and helping their kids choose the right courses in high school, help encourage them and open the doors for them.” To attend the career information night, parents need to pre-register at the child’s school career office. Grey says he’s pleased to see the various government ministries — Education, Advanced Education and Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training — working to bring K-12, post-secondary and industry together to ensure students get the skills they need to get in-demand jobs. The blueprint includes doubling the number of ACE-IT (Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training) program spaces to 5,000 over
the next two years. While Grey said increasing ACEIT spaces is positive, he would like to see some funding come to school districts to run those programs at the secondary school level — rather than keeping funding focused at the post-secondary level. “I believe that a lot of that (training) can be done at the high school level, and it can be done actually quite economically,” says Grey, noting the school district runs ACE-IT auto service technician, auto collision repair and carpentry in its secondary schools, but the blueprint didn’t recognize these programs are taught in secondary schools by secondary school teachers. “So I’m working on that — I would like to see more of that happening because it’s much easier for a student to take a trades program right in their local high school than to have to drive ... to go to another facility. “But there’s no talk of any kind of shuffling of monies or where monies can come from for districts that actually host some of these programs and would like to grow them. I’d like to build more, I’d like to have more opportunities for trades, but, I don’t have the avenue for any kind of funding; it all goes to the postsecondaries.” For more information about ACEIT in the Comox Valley, visit www. sd71.bc.ca. We are very happy with Derek as our realtor. Once we found our home, he worked very hard trying to close the deal under trying circumstances. He kept us informed and explained patiently, the processes involved. He will ‘go to bat’ for you. Derek will also handle any issues that come up subsequent to the deal. He was a wonderful resource for providing the name of a building inspector, notary public, roofer, septic inspector etc. Coincedentally, the place in which we were staying while house hunting, had a guest who also purchased her house through Derek and spoke highly of him as well. We would not hesitate to recommend Derek to our friends and family (and in fact we have). ~ Joan Ehman/Chris Neale

Comox council adopts amendments SPORTS Erin Haluschak Record Staff
Comox council adopted two bylaw amendments and an Official Community Plan amendment Wednesday — all three which were the subject of a public hearing two weeks ago. At Wednesday’s council meeting, the bylaw amendment for the Old Brooklyn School site, zoning bylaw for for medical marijuana facilities (RZ 13-6) and an OCP amendment to DPA #10 for large birds around the Comox Valley Airport were all given third reading,
with OCP amendments adopted. The bylaws were unanimously approved and will be adopted at the next council meeting. Coun. Barbara Price said she was reading about some details around a medical marijuana facility in Nanaimo which “employs 60 people and security guards on site at all time and cameras surrounding the area.” “It’s like a bank within a prison,” she added. Clarification on Stable Program article To clarify, in the May 6 edition of the Record, the Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society’s Stable Program itself is not ending; it is losing its current facility, at Stonehenge Farm. The program is moving back to the Exhibition Grounds at the end of the month. The Society is making accommodations to house all of the programs with longer days during the week including Saturdays. The rider fees are heavily subsidized; however, CVTRS would like to acknowledge multiple supporters and organizations who help maintain the Society including the Children’s Health FoundaCAMPBELL RIVER
tion, the Comox Valley School District, and 27 years of support from the United Way.

Rice Toyota reaches the Pinnacle NEWS
Just days after Rice Toyota Courtenay celebrated its 31st year in business in the Comox Valley, Toyota Canada executives presented Courtenay Toyota with the Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle is an award given to the leading Toyota dealer in each size category, emblematic of excellence in customer satisfaction in both the sales and service departments. The award is determined via survey results filed by actual customers through standardized automotive surveys conducted by JD Powers on behalf of Toyota Canada. “I am extremely pleased to receive this award once again,” said Brian Rice, owner and dealer principal of Rice Toyota. “Courtenay Toyota had received the award the last time in 2008 and as the bar gets raised every year, Courtenay Toyota had maintained its level, but was no longer leading the category. “Our dealership had been selected for a year-long consultation process provided by Toyota Canada in which all aspects and processes were reviewed and 2013 showed that we were not only the leader in our category, but also most improved.” “Courtenay Toyota has always been a great place to buy a car or truck, we have always used a low pressure approach and have made sure that the customer is always 100 per cent satisfied,” said Andrew Rice, general manager of sales and administration. “Now, with just a few little tweaks in our sales process, we are making sure that the experience is even better. “Not only are we one of the volume leaders

One such great person is Cameron McGowan, who received a Pinnacle Award for customer service and satisfaction as the top service advisEr in B.C. “We believe in offering the most transpar-

Politicians appear to be listening to the electorate
A
pathy in the political process has reached an all-time high in recent years, with the perception that elected representatives are not really listening to public concerns. But there is evidence this week that the provincial government is heeding public feedback, on two currently contentious issues at least. An all-party committee of MLAs has unanimously supported a proposal from Finance Minister Mike de Jong that henceforth all B.C. politicians will publish their expense receipts – including food, travel and accommodation – online. The proposal, clearly a response to the flap over legislature Speaker Linda Reid’s expenses – including nearly $5,500 in business-class air travel for her spouse, since repaid – elicited a few grumbles from NDP MLAs over the work involved in backing all expenses with receipts. But it seems MLAs overall agreed with de Jong’s assessment that steps need to be taken to restore public trust, after recent “unreasonable” expense abuses in B.C. and beyond. Meanwhile Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick has apparently taken note of written feedback from B.C. residents in amending the proposed Bill 24, which would make changes to the province’s Agricultural Land Reserve. The contentious two-zone provision remains, dividing ALR land into one area (Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan) where farmland would be protected from non-agricultural development and another (essentially the rest of B.C.) where farmers might have options to invite in ‘value-added’ industries that could include oil and gas development. But there are indications that the impassioned words of many regarding both the need for food security in the province and a long-term commitment to preserving agricultural land have been noted and reflected in amendments. – Campbell River Mirror

Current transport system can handle diluted bitumen Editor: Re: Columns by David Black, ‘Canada needs Kitimat refinery’ (Part 1, April 24, Part 2, April 29). Continued safe marine and pipeline transport of hydrocarbons is in everybody’s interest so Canadians can realize value for resources and oil producers can continue to deliver jobs and economic benefits. No one wants a spill of any product at any time. The performance track record over the past 50 years is good, but even still, work is ongoing to improve prevention and ensure producers, transportation companies and spill-responders have the best information available to manage products safely and make the best plans possible for response, containment and clean-up in the event of an incident. Black’s articles incorrectly suggested the Canadian oil industry is not interested in the proposed refinery project and that transporting diluted bitumen is more risky than transporting other types of oil because of its chemical properties. Fact is, oil producers are seek-
ing increased access to existing and new markets – in Canada, the United States and internationally – to satisfy market demand for increasing Canadian oil production. All options to achieve that goal are worthy of study. And diluted bitumen – oil sands bitumen diluted with natural gas liquids that allow it to flow – is no more dangerous than other types of crude oil. Chemically, there’s nothing about diluted bitumen the transportation system cannot be prepared to manage. Whether it moves by pipelines or tankers, diluted bitumen meets all the same specifications and behaves the same as other crude oils. Oil floats on water if it has an API gravity above water’s 10 degree API gravity. Diluted bitumen has an API gravity of 20-22 degrees. Any type of oil spilled in water, eventually “weathers” and can be driven below the surface by waves or currents. Diluted bitumen behaves the same way. There have been several scientific studies completed on diluted bitumen. Earlier this year, the
federal government released a research study that demonstrated diluted bitumen floats on salt water – even after evaporation and exposure to light. The study was commissioned by Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada as part of the government’s plan to implement a world-class prevention, preparedness and response regime for marine transportation. Results of the study will be used to inform spill responders and help guide more research. Our industry is focused on responsible development of Canada’s resources. We welcome transparency on our safety and environmental performance, based on sound science. As producers, we transport oil with care and attention at all times. We expect all transportation providers to deliver safe services in a responsible manner.
Greg Stringham Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Calgary
Diluted bitumen too dangerous at sea; refinery needed Editor, In the preceding letter, Greg Stringham, on behalf of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, makes assertions about the behaviour of diluted bitumen (dilbit) in salt water that are at best half-truths. He states that dilbit floats on salt water and that it is no more dangerous at sea than other types of oil. That is wrong. It is more dangerous at sea, and infinitely more so than refined fuels like diesel and gasoline. What Stringham doesn’t mention is that the same report from Environment Canada that he quotes from, goes on to say that dilbit sinks in seawater when there is sediment present. Another study by a top U.S. environmental chemist, Jeff Short, says the same thing. It was filed by the Gitxaala Nation to the National Energy Board in March 2013, so Stringham is well aware of it. That study says ani-
mal and plant matter like plankton, as well as sediment, cause the dilbit to sink. Our entire coast has sediment and plankton in abundance. All our rivers are glacial and full of silt. Plankton is omnipresent, which is why the whales are here, and shallow seas like Hecate Strait throw up huge amounts of sediment from the bottom in storms. Dilbit will sink in our waters if there is a spill and it will harden up like caulking material on beaches and the intertidal zone. The intertidal zone includes large mud flats in the midcoast because the tidal range is more than 20 feet there. How would we ever get them clean again? Stringham also says our Canadian oil industry is interested in the Kitimat refinery idea. That is news to me. I have talked to all the companies and there is no interest whatsoever. That is why I am spearheading the project. It
will keep dilbit out of tankers and provide an enormous valueadd for B.C. Canada’s oil industry needs a west coast pipeline. Coastal First Nations, the Yinka Dene First Nations, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers, the provincial and federal NDP, the federal Liberals, the provincial and federal Green Party, many blue collar unions and the majority of folks in B.C. are against Northern Gateway’s idea of putting dilbit in tankers. A refinery is economically viable. Why is it so hard for our oil industry to see that the way forward is to build a green refinery which will cut greenhouse gases by 50 per cent, create thousands of jobs, generate billions of new annual taxes, and gain acceptance for a safe pipeline?

Perhaps transit fees should be raised to pay for transit costs Dear editor, With regard to C.F. Olsen’s letter re: increasing gas taxes in the Comox Valley to put toward transit expansion. I am of the opinion that publicly (taxpayer) funded transit is one of the biggest boondoggles ever foisted on the general public. Forcing taxpayers to dig ever deeper into shrinking pockets to greatly subsidize transit is incredibly unfair. Olsen is angered by the City of Courtenay considering, not threatening, to withdraw funding for transit. Perhaps there is
nity that can be proud of the transit system, why then is Mr./ Ms. Olsen so anxious to place the onus more heavily on the taxpayers and not shoulder his/her fair share? Based on a 21-day work month, if transit riders were to pay what it costs to operate transit, the cost of that transit would be more than my truck payment, insurance and go a long way towards the gas I use. The improvements necessary to make our transit service a godsend are far beyond the capacity of any reasonable amount of taxation.
Letters to the Editor Send your letter to editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com, or drop it off at the Record office, 765 McPhee Ave. Please keep letters to a maximum of 300 words and sign with your name and hometown. We reserve the right to publish and to edit for space/clarity.
finally some “Common Sense” surfacing at city hall. Olsen is a senior “who does not drive and depends on public transit.” As such he/she would not shoulder any of the increased tax of fuel. I wonder if Mr./Ms. Olsen has considered that per-
haps it would be more fair to have transit users pay more than the measly 19.7 per cent currently paid by ridership. Would he/she be willing to pay $7.50 rather than the buck and a half it presently costs him/her? If as a member of the commu-
Olsen’s desire to make affordable day trips to Qualicum, Parksville, or Woodgrove mall would further over burden the transit funding. There is a reason Greyhound only runs two buses a day downisland; there aren’t enough riders to make it economically viable. I would respectfully suggest that Mr./Ms. Olsen and the like take his/her gold-plated wish list and move to Vancouver or Victoria where they already have the taxpayer funded transit service in place. Bon Voyage! M. Richards Comox
Public transit can make families fitter, health-wise and finacially Dear editor, The future of the Comox Valley transit system service is now being discussed by local governments. We would like to share our experience of using the local transit system. Our household has two working adults and no children living at home. Up to a year and half ago we owned two cars. We now are able to function quite well with one car because of our access to a morning bus that gets us downtown for work by 8.15 a.m. We now use a car, bicycles and transit to meet our transportation needs. Without access to the bus, particularly in the winter, we could not have made the
shift to one vehicle. The benefits of this decision have been many. Financially we are saving on the gas, maintenance and depreciation expenses associated with a second car. This saves us thousands of dollars a year. In fact, the financial benefit of the local transit service saves us more than what we pay in property taxes! Having the one car gets us off our butts and on our bikes which is good for our health and well being. We also know that we are driving less which in a small way reduces CO2 emissions. Having one car and relying on transit and cycling is less convenient. Sharing
the car requires us to co-ordinate and plan in advance. However, the benefits to our bank account, our health and the planet are well worth it. Less cars on the road will reduce the need for expensive road and bridge expansions, reduce air pollution and ease congestion. We think that supporting an expansion of the transit system to improve frequency of service would allow many more Comox Valley residents to become one-car households.

Dear editor, Re: The closing of credit unions The Coastal Community Credit Union, of which I am a member, states that our vision is to be leaders in building relationships that improve financial health, enrich people’s lives and build healthier communities. Our purposes include being leaders in building strong relationships by being more helpful and caring and improving financial health; in creating an environment where we say great things, do great things, and where we want to stay; and in making a visible and meaningful difference in building healthier communities. Our communities are our home. It appears though, that all that really matters is the organization’s financial success. It is written somewhere that, “If one member suffers, all suffer together.” Yes, if we constrict circulation to our geographic extremities these wee places will feel like they have been frost-bitten. Frost-bite puts the whole organism, the whole Coastal Community, into agony (the reduction in ferry service began the squeeze). Bob Stiven Comox

Napkin rings latest fundraising project for Valley cancer patient Scott Stanfield Record Staff
Donations have climbed past $38,000 in an online campaign to generate $65,000 for Gayle Bates, an affable Comox Valley resident who is battling breast cancer. A selfemployed contractor without access to health benefits, Gayle is unable to work as she undergoes radiation and chemotherapy treatments in Victoria. Koreen Gurak — Gayle’s contract manager at the regional district — and Ralda Leroux have co-ordinated a creative project involving napkin rings and felt in an effort to rejuvenate fundraising efforts. Leroux communicated the idea to her daughter and business partner who operate a felt factory in Nepal. They sourced the felt in New Zealand, had it coloured in Switzerland, and then cut into ‘male and female’ napkin rings at the Nepal factory. “To think there’s families in Nepal that are secure in their lives for a period of time — and all because somebody cares. It makes the world big and tiny at the same time,” said Gayle. Gayle is experiencing “new scary challenges and fears,” but she is employing a positive attitude as she literally fights for her life. “I learned young and it served me well: You choose your attitude every day. I’m finding it’s an important part of this, too.” She considers her battle to be a journey and an experience, finding there are as many types of the

disease — and ways of dealing with it — as there are people. She travels back and forth to the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria, which she calls an “amazing facility.” During the lonely and scary moments, Gayle is sustained by memories of people who have given her a hug or shared a wish such as ‘Hang in there.’ More than 300 people have raised $38,253 since the campaign started four months ago. This amount includes a $13,800 contribution from participants at last month’s Bollywood-themed fundraiser at the Filberg Centre. “It was a time for community building,” Gayle said. “That’s really an important part of who I am. If cancer can be pressed into service to do something good like that, good on it.” To order ‘felt people’ napkin rings, contact Gurak at ktgurak1@gmail. com. Minimum $10 contributions are appreciated for a set of four. To donate online, visit www. gofundme.com/gayle-bates.

Little Church featuring Big Band sounds The “Beltone Jazz Series“ continues this Thursday evening, with another entertaining evening of great music, featuring Comox Valley’s very own 19 person, “Georgia Strait Big Band” at The Little Red Church in Comox. The evening promises to be a musical treat, featuring the tunes made famous by Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and beyond, expertly conducted by Professor Greg Bush. Greg has been travelling from his residence in Nanaimo over 40 times per year for the past seven years to lead the Georgia Strait Big Band, a commitment for
which all the band members are grateful. Thursday’s performance will feature some brand new repertoire and will showcase the elegant vocals of Jackie Zbirun, who will lead listeners down memory lane with beautiful renditions of classic favourites of the Big Band era. This Big Band is the latest incarnation of Big Band music in the Comox Valley that dates back over 70 years, when folks danced the night away at The Native Sons Hall. Over the years, the Georgia Strait Big Band has mentored young musicians, who have pur-
Acclaimed singer offering vocal workshop The Georgia Strait Jazz Society is sponsoring a singing workshop, featuring one of Canada’s top jazz vocal improvisers. Jennifer Scott will be offering two vocal workshops in Courtenay on Saturday, June 14. The morning session, on vocal technique and improvisation, runs from 9 a.m. to noon, for SCOTT $20. The afternoon session (1-4 p.m.) is $25, and there is a discounted price of $40 for those who take both. The afternoon ses-
sion, which will focus on “getting the most from a song” is strictly limited to 12 registrants, although others may audit the session for a $5 fee. Advance registration is required for both sessions. To register or for more information, phone Dale at 250-339-6989. sued post-secondary studies and careers in musical performance. “None of this could be possible without the generous support of Jeff and Sharon Germain, owners of the Beltone Hearing Care Centres,” said Jazz series organizer Rob Peterson, who added to remember to bring your dancing shoes, as there will be a designated dance area. Doors for this all-ages event open at 7 and performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Bop City in Courtenay and The Red Carpet Boutique in Comox. The cost will be $12 at the door.

Historical labour movement film at NIC As part of Mayworks celebration of arts and labour, World Community screens the dramatic 1954 film “Salt of the Earth,” May 20, 7 p.m. at the North Island College theatre in Courtenay. Based on an actual strike against the Empire Zinc Mine in New Mexico, the film deals with the prejudice against the Mexican-American workers, who struck to attain wage parity with Anglo workers in other mines and to be treated with dignity. The film explores complex issues
of labour relations, minority rights and the struggle of women to achieve equality in their daily lives. When the company got an injunction preventing the workers from picketing, the wives of the miners play a pivotal role in the strike. “It’s amazing that this film was made in the 1950s” says programmer Janet Fairbanks. “The role reversal when men take over some of the household chores as the women head to the picket line is quite stunning for this era.”
The writers, director and producer of the film were all blacklisted by the Hollywood establishment during the McCarthy era. In neorealist style, the producers and director used actual miners and their families as most of the actors in the film. Will Geer was one of only four professional actors in the film. “Salt of the Earth” was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 100 films to be preserved for posterity. Admission is by donation. Call 250-337-5412 for more info.

Celebration Singers’ 20th anniversary show and reunion When a small group of mostly untrained, but committed, singers met in Comox Valley homes and churches to sing songs of the spirit, no one could have predicted the growth in numbers and musicality, nor the longevity of the group. After 20 years, that tenacious little troupe has grown into a competent, high-energy community choir of nearly 80 voices: The Celebration Singers. Under the direction of the vivacious and talented Jenn Forsland, and accompanied by the skilful Sean Mooney on piano, the choir is “movin’ on up”. The Celebration Singers invites you to join them on June 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Williams Theatre for its 20th anniversary concert.
The evening will take you on a magical musical ride featuring contemporary Canadiana, Broadway hits, uplifting spirituals, evocative world music, and humorous madrigals. The Vanier School Choristers choir will share the stage with the Celebration Singers on several selections, adding both their youthful energy and their lovely voices. The Celebration Singers is a community choir in the true sense of the concept, welcoming all voices and singing songs from many traditions that celebrate life and diversity. The choir also has a long tradition of families and partners singing together and sharing their love for each other and their music, with audi-
ences in the Valley. Members look after administration duties keeping the choir moving ahead from year to year. The 20th anniversary show will also include a reunion. To honour the joyful history of the Celebration Singers, the choir is calling all former members to join in the finale of the event. Past members are asked to visit the Celebration Singers website (www.celebrationsinges.ca) for details. Please register with your e-mail under the Alumni tab to receive information. Tickets for the concert are $14 for adults, $10 for youth and are available at the Sid box office or online at www.sidwilliamsthe- The Celebration Singers are celebrating 20 years. atre.com. Gunter returns to national team
FORMER GLACIER KING Jordan Kamprath will be the team’s assistant coach next season.
Kamprath joins coaching staff
For the second straight year, Brad Gunter of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team will represent his country internationally. The fourth year outside hitter from Courtenay was chosen to be a part of Canada’s Senior “B” men’s national team. This followed a four-day selection game which ended Tuesday at the National Team’s training facility in Gatineau, Quebec. “This camp was very competitive,” said Gunter, who was the Canada West and CIS Player of the Year in 2013-14. “There were 58 guys trying out and much of my competition was older than myself. Many of them had experience with
the full time training centre.” Gunter had been to a pair of Junior National team training camps the previous years but said this camp, under the direction of Georges LaPlante of the University of Montreal, was more vigorous. Gunter led the CIS this year in kills per set (5.31), points (404.5) and points per set (6). He was second in the nation in kills (356), fifth in total attacks (742) and service aces (27). After starting for Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2013, Gunter is looking forward to again wearing the maple leaf. “Making this team is another step towards playing for the Senior ‘A’ team. My skills will continue to develop and the insight of the
other coaches will help so much in helping me prepare for the 201415 CIS season. It also means that I will be helped financially and
will be doing something I love this summer instead of working in a non-sports related job. “I hope to compete
for a spot on the travelling team and hopefully, I will get the chance to start. “ Gunter states. – TRU WolfPack

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings have announced that graduate player Jordan Kamprath will be an assistant coach with the team for the 2014-15 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season. “Jordan joined the Glacier Kings as a player in 2011 and played three seasons in the VIJHL,” the team notes on its website. “Jordan’s passion, enthusiasm, and love for the game, both on and off the ice are a great addition to our already knowledgeable and dedicated coaching staff.” The 20-year-old Kamprath hails from Boyle, Alta. In 37 games with the Yetis in 2011-12 Kamprath had 26 points. In 2012-13 he played 25 games and had 27 points with the Icemen then was traded to the Campbell River Storm where he scored 19 points in 16 games. In 2013-14 Kamprath played 24 games for the Storm, collecting 15 points, then returned to the Glacier Kings, where he skated in nine regular season games (11 points) and 11 playoff games (10 points).

(NC) If you’ve cared for kids during summer break, you know how those ten weeks can stretch out! But summer is also a wonderful time to learn with your kids, in ways that might not normally have time for. Best of all: they can help someone (or something!) in need, and feel really great about it. Here are five activities for all kinds of kids: The entrepreneur: If your kids want to earn money, brainstorm

for small business ideas. The classic lemonade stand still lures many a thirsty family en route from the park. Perhaps a portion of the proceeds can be donated to a charity. Have your children research at least three. The environmentalist: Create a way-station for migrating monarch butterflies, whose populations are threatened due to loss of natural habitat on their routes. Visit http://monarchwatch. org/waystations/ to learn what to plant in your backyard or a nearby abandoned lot. The fundraiser: With FIFA World Cup on this summer, many will have soccer on the brain! Perhaps your resident soccer nuts could invite friends to play ‘the world’s longest soccer game’ in the local park, to raise funds for sports equipment for underprivileged kids. The friendly neighbor: Is there an elderly person in your neighborhood, or mom with a very small child? Summer’s a great chance to walk across the road with some baking, to ask how your son or daughter could help. It’s a great chance for your child to practice reading out loud over the summer. The caring baker: Invest in a tin of fair trade cocoa, or bag of fair trade sugar, and learn a basic cupcake or brownie recipe. Wherever your child offers these treats (to neighbors in need or for sale at a lemonade stand) he or she could share what they’ve learned about child labour. Ivan Bruce Trainor
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Bruce Trainor (dad) age 81, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather on April 19, 2014 in Courtenay BC. He passed away suddenly after enjoying a wonderful Easter dinner with his youngest son Rob, daughter-in-law Colleen and grandchildren Brett and Brook. Born in Calgary on Aug 15, 1932 he joined the RCAF in Clinton, ON and while attending radio officer’s school, he met his wife Ilean Wilma Janzen and they were married October 17, 1953. Bruce quickly switched to flight crew and became a navigator and achieved the rank of Captain. In Dad’s words, during his 25 year military career, “I never worked a day in my life” because he absolutely loved what he did. Upon retiring from the Armed Forces in 1975, Bruce sold real estate retiring in 2000 after a second 25 year career. Bruce concentrated on hobbies involving computers, research, genealogy, photography, stamp collecting, reading and rescue dogs. He loved the internet, driving, 2 bit tours of the valley, online photo contests, and kept an active blog. He had more cameras than children and grandchildren and travelled frequently to various parts of Vancouver Island to take pictures. Bruce was a brilliant man with a passion for knowledge He was quick witted and quick to laugh, well-read and enjoyed debating and conversing with others. He will be missed by those of us that were privileged enough to know him. Dad I’m sorry your sudden passing prevented us from driving the Deh Cho Bridge together or drinking that ridiculously priced 25 year old bottle of SCAPA together. Thanks for the many years of loving leadership Dad, we love you. Rest well. Bruce is survived by his four children, (Rhoderic, Leslie, Alan and Robert) 9 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A private service for family and friends was held on Sunday April 27, 2014.
