The City of Grand Forks celebrated water week in B.C. with an open house at Well 4/5 at Dick Bartlett Park on Thursday. Staff and members of council were on hand to explain the well process and show residents the equipment used to control extraction of water. Mayor Brian Taylor cut the ribbon as well for the west side fire protection gen-set (generator) installation project.
Bruins select new coach
There were also several classes touring the facility from Perley Elementary School. “We had quite a few local people that live in that area that came around,” said Taylor. “We’re also appreciative of the school board for bringing out the classes. They got the chance to learn about water. I think that was really positive.” Taylor complimented the city staff members for organizing the open house conducting the open house. “Everything was labeled so you didn’t need to ask what was what,” he said. “It was really helpful.”
The Grand Forks Border Bruins have opted for experience over youth when selecting their next coach and general manager. The new man behind the bench for the Bruins is Brad Snyder, who has over 35 years of experience coaching hockey at various levels in Manitoba. Snyder hails from Flin Flon, where he coached the junior A Bombers as well as various youth teams at different levels.
“He appears to be very committed to the job,” said Martin Vanlerberg, president of the Bruins. “He loves the area. That was one of the big pieces. He wintered in Osoyoos and came and saw some of the games and he just fell in love with the area.” Snyder came to Grand Forks for an interview with the Bruins board of directors in May and got a tour of the area. “I think he’s going to have very • See BORDER BRUINS page 20

City celebrates water week
Petitions seem to be very popular around Grand Forks these days. Although the petition to halt the water meter installation project failed to stop that from happening, local residents are getting behind a petition to keep Dr. Ajaero in the Boundary. The petition was started by Teresa Rickman, a patient of Dr. Ajaero, who began by gathering signatures at the post office. The petition has also gone online at change.org for those who aren’t able to get out to the post office in Grand Forks. “I just started going to him,” said Rickman. “In my appointment, I said, ‘I’m so glad I found a doctor who can help me,’ and then I found out he was leaving.” Rickman started the petition titled, “We, Dr. Henry Ajaero’s patients, want Dr. Ajaero to stay as a permanent physician in Grand Forks, B.C. without prejudices.” Rickman said Ajaero agreed to the petition and she began to post information on Facebook pages such as the Grand Forks Buy and Sell. The thread on the Buy and Sell immediately became very popular, receiving over 80 posts of support for the doctor. The petition currently has 576 signatures. Rickman says when she receives 1,000 signatures she will be sending copies to the Ministry of Health, the administration at the Kootenay Boundary Hospital, and to Dr. Ajaero. Interior Health has stated that they have not received any complaints of prejudice at the Grand Forks hospital nor have they received any word of any doctors from here leaving. “I have had no word either from Dr. Ajaero or the chief of staff that he has

Councilor Joy Davies had asked council to bring a motion to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities calling for easier access to marijuana.

Investing in the future There’s always lots going on at the Lake. As most people know, that’s not just a fancy slogan but it’s true. When businesses started closing down due to the economy or for whatever reason, people in Christina Lake didn’t just sit idly by and point fingers or put a hand out to the municipal government. No, they formed committees and groups and got together and looked at ways to improve the town. From those ashes came the Christina Gateway Association as well as the Christina Lake Community Venture Capital Corporation. It took some growing pains, and the group expects many more before seeing any benefits but at least things are now starting to move in a positive direction. The latest event hosted by the group was the recent community venture capital conference. With more than 100 people passing through the doors of the Christina Lake Community Hall from places as far away as Vancouver, Keremeos and Cranbrook. Of course, most of those in attendance were from the area and got to hear great ideas and learn from some of the people who have done similar projects before. A buffet style meal at the Crow and Bear and a laid back evening gathering were also great opportunities for people to mix and mingle and bounce ideas off each other.

Even Justin and Rob have mothers who have hope Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ Mother’s Day has come and gone again. For those of us too old to still have mothers to send cards and flowers to, it has become more a day of reflection than celebration. It was originally created in 1908 by Anna Jarvis as a day of action for mothers, a day when women would band together and devote themselves to worthy, health related causes as Jarvis’s mother had done during the Civil War. When Hallmark cards and
other commercial interests began to dominate the Day in the ’20s, Jarvis became so enraged that she tried to have Mother’s Day removed as a national holiday. It is obvious who won that battle. Jarvis was a little off the mark, however. Even though Mother’s Day isn’t quite what the founder intended, it is not really controlled by commercial interests. They merely are convenient suppliers of tokens of appreciation. As any mother will tell you, the cards, flowers, candy, even the health spa gift certificate or, if you are the mother of a professional athlete, new house, are not the essence of Mother’s Day. There is a sin-
cere, if brief, outpouring of love and affection on that day that is authentic and beyond commercialization. The gifts, large or small, are merely symbolic reflections of that emotion. Not that a day at the spa wouldn’t be considered a welcome break from the onerous, daily work load. Of all the things that we appreciate mothers for, I sometimes wonder if their ability to silently bear disappointment isn’t the greatest. They all have such high hopes for their children. They see potential in them from the moment of their births and try to develop that potential in the best ways that they know how. There are so many things that can inter-

fere with that development, and at any time along the way. Justin Bieber’s mother must have thought all her hopes were being realized at one point; Rob Ford’s mother as well. Still, our mothers love us and hope for the best. They adjust their expectations and send us out into the world, hopeful that what they taught us will be enough to allow us to cope with whatever comes our way. My mother always wanted me to go to university at Princeton. I didn’t get in. However, I still brush my teeth twice a day, look people in the eye when I talk to them, and I never put my elbows on the table. She would smile with some satisfaction at that.

Opinion
to the editor
Explanation about doctor needed from people in charge Editor, The Gazette: We would be losing one of the most competent, caring doctors we have in our area, if Dr. Ajaero leaves. He is held in very high regard by all his patients and is considered by many a friend. Traveling through three communities, bringing us the care that we so desperately need in
an area so often left without. He takes the time to listen to you, not rushing your time and as everyone can agree, with a handshake and a sincere smile on his face. With Dr. Ajaero we have a good man, who is an important part of our community and we all hoped he would have stayed for many years to come. We’d be
very sorry to see him go. We agree with the families who have voiced their opinions in previous letters—we need an explanation from the people in charge. Maybe if more of us let them know how we feel it might not be too late. Joni and Stan Elzinga, Gordon Robertson, Christian Valley
Ajaero dedicated, professional
Editor, The Gazette: My name is Dr. Mike Figurski and I recently filled in for Dr. Ajaero in Rock Creek, Greenwood and Grand Forks. I have been practicing medicine for over 20 years and doing locum work in many locations most of that time. I am also the full-time doc at Big White. I would like to thank Doreen, Bonnie and all the ladies at Boundary Medical Clinic in Grand Forks for one of the most efficient and inclusive medical practices I
of service is almost unheard of for communities of this size. At a time where much larger populations (Logan Lake, Princeton, Clearwater, Merritt and others) are struggling to find doctors, the Boundary is fortunate to have a dedicated and professional physician in Dr. Ajaero. I hope he continues to serve your area for many years to come. Mike Figurski, BSc, MD, CAME, DA (“Dr. Mike”)
have ever had the pleasure to work in. I am impressed that the citizens and volunteer groups in these areas have established a modern and accessible medical service in a sparsely populated, under-serviced rural area. I found the patient medical information systems to be coordinated and comprehensive, and the care given by Dr. Ajaero to be of very high quality. There are detailed and well thought out clinical notes, and consistent follow up. I should mention this level

gave me worked very well. For the first time in my life, I found a doctor who shows respect to his patients, listens to them and is not patronizing. By far he is the best doctor I have had the privilege to have.
Stop wasting money Editor, The Gazette: We did not elect city council so that they could be out of line. Once and for all, elected officials are servants of the people. The people stated their opposi-
tion to water meters by 800 signatures on their petition. This is enough. Stop wasting our money to inflict detrimental conditions on us. Nadine Heiberg, Grand Forks

Effective Solutions For: Heel Pain, Arch Pain, Heel Spurs, Bunions, Corns, Calluses, and Toenails Including Orthotics and Preventative Routine Care
There have been several letters and articles in the last two editions of your paper concerning the future of Grand Forks; suggestions that the area is in decline, that businesses are leaving, and the town is slowly dying are worrisome. I think those suggestions are Special Guest wrong. On the contrary, I believe In The Spotlight there are many reasons for the residents of this area to be optimistic ALAN PETERSON about the future of the valley. A little over two years ago, and after spending most of a lifetime in Victoria, my wife and I retired to Grand Forks. We wanted to live in a small town, and looked at towns up and down the island, and in the Okanagan. We finally settled on Grand Forks for a number of reasons: the climate, the small town feel, the friendliness of the people we met (and continue to meet), cost of living, and the proximity to a variety of recreational opportunities. I think the same reasons that made us decide on Grand Forks, will bring other retirees to this area. Demographics of our population indicate that the bulk of the “baby boomers” will retire over the next 15 years, and I have no doubt that many of those retirees, from B.C., Alberta, and elsewhere, will choose this beautiful valley. Every time a retiree moves here, they bring with them a source of income, a certain amount of capital, and more importantly, energy and involvement in our community. Retirees use goods and services, and generate economic activity. This in turn provides employment opportunities for young people, who may then be able to stay here, rather than be forced to seek work elsewhere. There are other bright spots. While much is made of the empty storefronts as a sign an economic tailspin, I suggest if you look at any small town in B.C., regardless of location, you will find empty storefronts. We are undergoing a retail revolution in this country, where traditional retailers, big and small, are feeling the effects of increased competition not just from other retailers, but from online shopping. Cross-border shopping is also a factor here, but one that ebbs and flows with the ups and downs of our dollar. Yet if you look around the town, if you are paying attention, there are new businesses that have started up and are flourishing. The key seems to be to find a niche that needs servicing, and go for it. I am optimistic that more opportunities will be identified and exploited by imaginative people who can see the current scenario for what it is: a time of change. The other great advantage this valley has is abundant farmland. Much of the land that used to be cultivated is now lying fallow or is underutilized. Years ago, this valley had farms all over it, growing vegetables that were marketed all over the province. With the onset of climate change now wreaking havoc in the great vegetable growing areas of the southwest U.S., there is no question that our farmland is going to be needed again, perhaps like never before. In my neighbourhood on the west side of town, we have seen a field previously unused being plowed last fall and planted with garlic. Another property down the road is being plowed up and turned into an organic vegetable farm. Small beginnings to be sure, but a sign of things to come. There is no question that the economics of food production, driven by the stark realities of climate change, will have a dramatic impact on this valley. I can see a great future for organic farming here, and as more land is returned to production, a wealth of economic opportunities open up for others. We need to be positive, and to recognize that while our town and our valley may be in period of transition, we have many good things going for us. All we need to do as a community is to get focused and go after these opportunities. Do that, and our future will be prosperous and secure.

They would have more insight as to how to stop this problem than the public would have. I would like to see them approach Interior Health or at least offer the public some direction as to how to help, especially when other rural areas have trouble getting doctors at all in their small communities. I will sorely miss this exceptional doctor. Ruth King, Grand Forks

Money better spent Stands to reason, get free water on improving image Editor, The Gazette: Further to the comments by Grace McGregor that appeared in the April 30 edition of the Gazette: “Businesses are shutting down: lists of houses for sale are growing: school registration is declining: people are shopping across the border: population is getting older.” These points are attributed to comments made at the recent AGM of the Grand Forks Credit Union. All any resident has to do is drive around town and look at the for-sale signs and vacancies on main street. Even a recent article in the Gazette that dealt with population growth/decline had the Boundary area dropping and no doubt the next census will show a decline. This situation will continue unless we are able to attract new residents. We can seek new businesses but Grand Forks has little or no sustainable competitive advantage for most industries. The other residents we can attract are seniors as we have most of the amenities retired couples seek. Last fall we had two couples, who are both
long-time friends, come and stay with us for a few days. These couples were from out of province and looking for a community to retire to. They both have now settled in the Okanagan Valley. When asked why they didn’t choose Grand Forks I received the following answers: “It looks like the town is dying”; “The roads are in terrible shape”; “Abandoned vehicles must be lawn ornaments (jokingly).” The money the City of Grand Forks has or will receive (which is allocated to the installation of water meters) would be far better spent on improving the image of our community. If we don’t attract additional residents we can all watch our property values continue to tank. If you doubt this just look at your last couple of years’ residential tax assessments. It is unfortunate that our city council appears to be far out of touch with a large number of the residents of Grand Forks (see the anti-water meter petition). Barry Jarvis, Grand Forks
Editor, The Gazette: Having viewed the Grand Forks Water Conservation Plan (final report dated April 2010 by Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd.), I discovered the following: “ICI USAGE: Currently the city supplies three large industrial customers and 194 multi-family, commercial, institutional clients with water. All customers are metered, and are billed on a bi-monthly basis. “According to city staff, some water connections to the large industrial clients may not be metered (emphasis added). If this is the case, service connections that are not metered should be retrofitted with meters.”
Bylaw 1822 section 19 explains the details. “19. The city shall require the installation of a water meters for all existing commercial properties to connect to the City of Grand Forks water system. The city shall supply the customer with the meter and pay for the installation. If a commercial property requests more than one meter, the city shall pay the cost of the meter, or meters and the commercial property shall pay for such use, as specified in Schedule B of the bylaw. “The city shall require the installation of water meters for all existing major industrial customers, as defined under the BC
Assessment Act, on the City of Grand Forks water system. The city shall supply the customer with the meter. The installation of the meter will be at the customer’s cost, and will be completed within three months of receiving the meter from the city. The city shall fix rates to be paid for such use, as specified in Schedule B of the Water Regulations and Rates Bylaw.” As city staff has given no reassurance that the aforementioned retrofitting has taken place, it stands to reason that residential customers will also be entitled to free water once their meters are installed. Julia Butler, Grand Forks
Editor, The Gazette: The Boundary District Arts Council, gallery 2 and Grand Forks and District Public Library had a successful 15th B.C. Arts and Culture Week April 20-26. For visual arts, there was a variety of 80 wonderful exhibits created by Boundary residents which will remain on display until May 10. During Arts Week, 140 students toured gallery 2 and the
library. The historical and toy rooms were also on the tour. The BDAC Performing Arts Groups held their Performance Gala earlier in April because of the Easter holiday and entertained in singing, instrumental, poetry, dance, a magic show and Grand Forks Pipes and Drums. A reception was held on the last day to honour all participants. The week ended with two performances by the Grand Forks Choral Society and the
Montreal Guitar Trio. Many thanks to all the organizers and participants. A special thank you to the Gazette for the great coverage and photos by Craig who popped in at all events. The Boundary has so many talented people and Arts Week is the opportune week to recognize them all. Erna Gobbett, Wendy Butterfield, Ted Fogg, Tina Bryan, Lizanne Eastwood and all volunteers

Water – Every Drop Counts:
Delay turning on outdoor irrigation and help conserve one of our most valuable resources
Grand Forks, BC – As the flowers and trees begin to bud and we start spending more time in our gardens, the City of Grand Forks wants to remind residents about outdoor water conservation and using water wisely. “Saving a drop can help save a lot. With the rain we’ve had lately, most gardens and lawns don’t even need the extra water from sprinklers yet,” says Mayor Brian Taylor. There are significant costs and energy required to deliver water to our taps, both indoor and outdoor, and treat it to be safe and clean. Conserving water helps reduce peak demands on the water infrastructure system and helps reduce the cost to maintain and operate the water system. “This is especially important during the summer months, when drought and water supply issues can affect the local water system. So it’s good to start thinking now about using water wisely,” adds Taylor. Here are some easy tips to help conserve water and still maintain a beautiful lawn and garden: • During the spring, watering is on Mother Nature’s tab and she usually provides more than enough rainfall to meet your lawn and garden needs. Best of all...rain is free! • Delay turning your sprinklers on in the spring and you’ll encourage a deeper, stronger and healthier roots system – better able to withstand the heat of summer. Or set your timers to water in the early morning hours. • Once you do turn on your sprinkler, most lawns only need about 2.5 centimetres of water per week — this is the depth of a tuna can! For this amount, you only need to sprinkle your yard once a week, even during the summer. • Watering your lawn for 1 hour uses approximately 1,000 litres of water, which is equivalent to 5 dishwasher loads, 5 loads of laundry and 25 toilet flushes combined! • Check outdoor faucets, pipes and hoses for leaks. You could be saving 40 to 110 litres/day just by doing a little spring maintenance. • Use a broom to clean the winter grit off your walkway and driveway rather than a hose. • When you head off to the nursery for spring plants, be sure to look for drought tolerant types well suited to life in sunny Grand Forks! • Now is a good time to add a few inches of compost or mulch such as bark chips to your garden to keep your plants’ roots cool and moist come summer. • Adjust your sprinklers so that water does not run down your driveway, sidewalks or street. • Collect water in a rain barrel and use it to water outdoor plants. “Conserving water is easy. Even the little things you do can help to reduce water use,” says Taylor. Check out our new Water Conservation tab on our website at www.grandforks.ca where you’ll find water conservation tips for inside and outside your home.
Editor, The Gazette: An open letter to mayor, councillors and city staff I believe that we all want what’s best for Grand Forks residents. And, it is out of my caring for the wellbeing of this land and our residents that I am motivated to write to you today. Having read much of the material from the water meter related engineering reports, I am not reassured about residential water meters being a good idea for Grand Forks. My concern is that our municipality would incur a financial risk as a result of them. Firstly, it is not proven that residential water meters cause water conservation. I have not been able to find any studies that prove this; if you have, please share them with me. What I have read is material that expresses opinion about water meters and speculation about the water conservation they may trigger. I’ve also read about comparisons that have been made that could be explained by other things besides water meters. I would be grateful to you if you would be willing to share and discuss any material that
you believe proves that water meters trigger conservation. My understanding is that many factors affect how much water we use. These include: • whether we have a yard (city dwellers versus rural residents) • whether we irrigate our yard • what we have growing that we irrigate in our yard • whether we have a pool and its size • what type of soil we have • what type of climate we have (how much rain) • the number of members living in our household (size of family) • the type of toilets we have • the type of water fixtures we have • how convenient it is to conserve • habits we have right now • our understanding of the value of water conservation for our circumstances • our awareness of water conservation techniques You and I know from living here, and according to city documents, that minimal education has been done for residential water conservation to this point. Also, according to one of the engineering reports, water
conservation education is relatively inexpensive. By comparison, installing residential water meters in Grand Forks would be highly expensive. Just the start-up costs alone would be over a million dollars, then there are maintenance, testing, data management, price determination, and future water meter replacement costs. There would also be the loss of yearly interest on our gas tax savings. Another loss would be lost opportunities of things we could do with that money, such as expanding public transit, creating a solar farm, building a geothermal greenhouse, or protecting riparian areas... couldn’t we use our gas tax savings to help our residents afford watersaving tools instead? Nowadays, more people are realizing the value of conservation. They are ready for education and affordable tools that help them with the actual conservation (rather than water measurement). Examples are rain barrels, precipitation sensors and irrigation timers. Please carefully consider what I have shared. Donna Semenoff, Grand Forks
Why weren’t there meetings? Editor, The Gazette: An open letter to mayor and council Is the decision to install approximately 2,000 water meters by you our council going to be another expensive fiasco for our cash-strapped city? Why have we NEVER had any serious and participatory open house meetings to explore ways to conserve water? Why has there been NO real effort for education on water conservation—despite what you keep saying? I believe our community could come together and even the most hard-nosed offenders would come on board if an effective approach to water conservation was implemented. And it need not be water meters at a cost of $1.3 million. There are examples out there where education has resulted in considerable savings in water usage... was this avenue ever looked at? NO! Why were the taxpayers never invited to express our concerns regarding water meters? Was this a deliberate attempt to shut out public input? Why was it that you made this decision without public input and THEN asked for feedback? Shouldn’t the horse come before the cart? Shouldn’t democracy be inclusive and participatory? And with the strong public outcry why are you so strongly resisting taking a step back and reconsidering?
Because of this oversight, here are issues that were never considered: • Carbon footprint of producing— mining, manufacture, shipping and installing of meters, replacing and disposing of these meters. And how much of our precious water resource will continue going into that? Can we not be better global citizens by rejecting this pattern of consumption? Water conservation does not exist as an isolated entity and does not happen by ignoring the bigger conservation picture: global sustainability. • Unknown harm potential—radiation exposure. Considerable data exits that this is a real danger to human health. Is the city in future facing unforeseen lawsuits when effects of such radiation is finally recognized? It took many years before this became obvious regarding tobacco use. • Very minimal actual reduction in water usage is actually realized when looking at the big picture. Residential water use makes up only 57 per cent of total water usage. Reducing our usage by 10 per cent through water meters would save us a mere 5.7 per cent of total water consumption. We could do much better through education and voluntary conservation—less the $1.3 million price tag. • Penalizing those who wish
to grow a garden (jeopardizing community sustainability). If you institute exceptions there is no guarantee that future councils will respect this. • Setting in place the infrastructure for future privatization of our water services (this is not likely your intention at this time). But when infrastructure costs become overwhelming in it will be so much easier to hand these costs over to private interests with the water meters already in place, and, of course, water costs will be passed on to us—the consumers. In fact this is already happening within B.C. with waste disposal and recycling. And no, Maude Barlow does not recommend water meters. In fact she states that advisors with a corporate bias are responsible for steering communities in this direction. Eva Anthony, Grand Forks

To alter this current inaction by youth regarding the environment, the people who do not care need to and the people already passionate need resources to act. Currently, teenagers are not the ones paying the bills, they are not worrying about the condition that their children will live in and they do not feel the ramifications of a wasteful attitude. Any call to arms is useless unless there is an effective response to be taken. These revolutionary changes that we all wish to make cannot be done unless we first tackle the responsibilities within our own lives. To invoke this will power requires an appeal to personal ideals and an erasure of presumed defeat. The environment is no longer at humanity’s disposal and though action is inconvenient, it is now necessary.
Club launches courtesy car program
The Grand Forks Flying Association COPA Flight 62 to the Grand Forks Gazette recently launched their Airport Courtesy Car Program with the generous support from Regional District Kootenay Boundary Area D Director, Irene Perepolkin, providing $2,000 in grant-in-aid in 2013. The local flying enthusiasts have been busy for the past year registering their organization as a non-profit society to comply with registering the vehicle that has been donated by Ben and Erin Peach, who reside in Area D. Members of the association gathered at their recent monthly meeting to launch the program at the airport providing transportation for visitors arriving by air. Volunteers are currently busy organizing the 3rd Annual Grand Forks Airport Appreciation Day and Fly-In scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014. The courtesy car program is a popular attraction at smaller community airports across Canada and this new service will be published in the “Places To Fly” section of the Canadian Owners & Pilots Association’s (COPA) monthly publication that reaches over 30,000 general aviation pilots across Canada. NOTICE OF WATER MAIN FLUSHING The Water Utility Department advises residents that we will be flushing water mains throughout the City during the months of April and May. Regular annual flushing is an important component of a comprehensive water management program. Flushing water mains are done as part of a scheduled preventative maintenance program to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes and helps maintain water quality in our system. Flushing will take place between the hours of 5:00 am and 3:30 pm. As we flush your area, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please check your drinking, cooking, and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more) Utility crews continue their water main flushing program to ensure the distribution system is refreshed and healthy. If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at info@grandforks.ca or call Public Works at 250-442-4148.

Christina Lake gets proactive CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
With government grants becoming tougher to get, many communities are looking at other ways to raise capital for local projects. Recently, the Christina Lake Community Venture Capital Corporation brought in speakers from throughout Canada for their Local Investment Capital in Rural Communities conference, which was held Monday at the Christina Lake Community Hall. The conference featured speakers in the afternoon and a less formal evening session with a public presentation which included videos and even dancing. The audience included local residents as well as representatives from different communities throughout B.C. Around 50 people came out for the afternoon session, while close to 75 people were out for the evening. “I think what it did is it said this community has a sense of community; it said, we are willing to listen; it said, we are willing to come on board; we want Christina Lake to be vibrant, we want Christina Lake to be successful, and we’re willing to be a part of it,” said Grace McGregor, Area C (Christina Lake) director and Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition (SIBAC) vice-chair. “That’s what I heard last night.” Audience members heard from speakers such as Mike Lewis, founder of the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal, who spoke on mobilizing capital in rural areas; Chris Payne, Nova Scotia Ministry of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, who spoke on Nova Scotia’s Community Economic Development Investment Funds (CEDIF) program; and Paul Cabaj, director of cooperative development, Alberta Community and Co-operative Association, who spoke on unleashing the local capital experience in Alberta. “I have to say, the people that weren’t there really missed something,” said McGregor. “They missed some of the answers about survival of your community; when it comes to the fact that there isn’t going to be help down the road; and
finding the answer within your community.” McGregor urges those that were unable to attend to check out the video on YouTube. The conference was put on by SIBAC, Tax Dollars Christina Lake, RDCK Area C (Christina Lake) and Columbia Basin Trust. McGregor said the speakers at the conference talked about the success stories of using local investment capital to improve rural communities. “They’ve done this very well,” she said. “They went through the pain too. They said, ‘No. We’re not willing to just sit here and wait for someone else to do it for us.’ They went out and did it. People need to see the video. They’ll be just amazed at what can be done.” Sandy Mark, Christina Lake community coordinator and one of the organizers of the event, said the conference was a great way for local residents to hear about and hopefully be inspired by the success stories of other regions with similar backgrounds. “Since we’re the first community venture capital corporation in B.C., we need to create a pathway through the securities commission and the venture capital legislation and regulations,” said Mark. “We’re still learning to do all that. We’re hoping to have all our technical decisions made in a few months if not sooner.” Mark said the group went back and forth between raising the money and then finding a business to invest in, or the other way around. “We were told by the folks who have been doing this for years that we should raise the money and be ready because these opportunities can pop up quickly,” she said. “It’s better to get our ducks in a row first. Of course, we’ll be beating the bushes for potential (businesses).” Christina Lake Venture Capital Corporation has been selected as a pilot project for B.C. by SIBAC, said Mark. “As a pilot, we’re really hacking through the bushes,” she said. “We’re going to hack through and leave a path that those communities that came to the workshop and those that wished they did can have an easier time of it. Because we’ve had a big challenge getting as far as we have so far.”

Habitat announces merger SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
Habitat for Humanity Boundary (Grand Forks) and Habitat for Humanity West Kootenay (Castlegar/Nelson) announced their merger today. Together, they will create a regional affiliate, Habitat for Humanity Southeast British Columbia (HFHSEBC), with a service area that includes the Boundary and Kootenay areas. (Rock Creek to the Alberta border, Golden to the U.S. border). Mark Rodgers, chief operating officer for Habitat for Humanity Canada, stated, “The concept of regionalization, or combining affiliates under new models of working together, is an initiative supported nationally by Habitat for Humanity Canada. The idea of realigning and creating larger, more efficient and effective regional affiliates has gained momentum across the country over the past two years, and has now commenced in British Columbia. Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC will be the first ever merger in the Province, and will hopefully draw the ‘blueprint’ for others to follow.” The merger agreement received HFH Canada approval on March 24, and the two boards of directors merged on May 5. Completion of the

submitted his resignation,” said Dr. Malcolm Ogborn, executive medical director for the East Kootenay/Kootenay Boundary for Interior Health. “All of that (prejudice) comes under the workplace environment policy. It’s the policy that really covers that everyone has the right to an appropriate respectful, safe workplace. Covered under those provisions of what that policy covers are any form of discrimination, not just race. Anything you can think of that causes discrimination. Effectively, it’s a zero tolerance policy.” The Gazette made repeated calls to Dr. Ajaero’s office, but he did not return the calls.
process is expected by Sept. 30, 2014. Rogers added, “The leadership and vision being demonstrated by the newly formed Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC affiliate is a clear example of collaboration and partnership at its best. Their willingness to restructure their organizations to better serve families is a remarkable testimony to their personal character and organizational leadership. In my mind, this new regional affiliate will experience a new level of impact and success for years to come, and many deserving families will be the beneficiaries of their outstanding work.” According to Executive Director Rick Friesen, HFHSEBC has built a combined total of 19 homes, in Greenwood, Grand Forks, Nelson and Castlegar, with a 20th project currently being built in Cranbrook. Habitat homes are sold at fair market value (a hand up, not a hand out), with an interest free mortgage, and mortgage payments that do not exceed 25 per cnet of the homeowner’s income. Friesen said, “In addition to building Habitat homes, we are planning to open ReStores in at least three locations. ReStores are Habitat stores that sell donated new and lightly used building products and household goods, and the proceeds from sales will provide long term sustainability for administrative and program costs.” Cranbrook (currently building a Habitat home as a project of HFHWK) will become the first chapter in the East Kootenays. Gord Johnston, project leader in Cranbrook, says, “Cranbrook’s first Habitat for Humanity build has already started to mobilize a community, with local citizens volunteering to help, and businesses putting together build day teams and offering funds and materials in-kind to support this project.” A partner family has been approved and is honoured to be given the opportunity to own a home, help with the build and volunteer their time to the community. Says Johnston, “This is truly a community project and we are very encouraged by the response to date”. The chapter model will be offered to all communities in the service area who wish to build Habitat homes. Heather More, chair of the Creston Valley Housing Society, stated, “We’ve been interested in Habitat for Humanity for some time, but our small community size prevented us from moving ahead. The regional concept allows us to become involved. Our priorities align with those of Habitat for Humanity.”

Thumbs down to the lake at the rec centre Thumbs down to the “no name” lake at the Rec Centre that forms every time it rains. It makes parking a problem unless you bring your boat or swim suit. Thumbs up to all those signing the petition to keep Dr. Ajaero here at the Boundary Hospital. Thumbs down to property owners who burn plastic, vinyl suitcases and plastic coolers on an outdoor burn pile. So much for Earth Day. Sadly it also reflects the concern they have for their neighbours and the fact that the planet already faces overwhelming pollution. Thumbs down to people who don’t keep a log of calls, or immediately phone back, when someone phones to offer to volunteer. Thumbs up to the Rikkoff market and their friends for their Mother’s Day
East Indian cuisine. They do, and have done, an excellent East Indian sampler luncheon for many years. Thank you for being such excellent contributors to our community. Thumbs down: What a pity that more people did not partake in the “Move for Health Day” last Thursday starting at the fitness centre. It was very well advertised, organized, and the 2 and 5
km routes well marked. In addition to gentle exercise, it would have allowed people to meet others, help community spirit, and allowed families to all work together for their betterment. Thumbs up to Ashleigh Jmayoff of Dazzle Dance Studio for leading the girls through a successful competition season, and for all the hard work she has put into the studio this year. This town is fortunate to have you! Would you like to give a thumb up or a thumb down? Email editor@grandforksgazette.ca with Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down as a subject line. We could publish your anonymous submission. Attacks on specific businesses and people will not be published. Editor’s discretion will always be exercised. Please keep it tasteful.
Association honours their own

On May 6, the Grand Forks Stock Breeders Association honoured two of their members, Carl Stone and John Mehmal, for 50 years of service and membership. They have both been instrumental members over the years with positions as presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries and directors. They were both presented with buckles by President Allen Pauls. It was a very enjoyable and educational evening as members of the stock association listened to John and Carl reminiscing about the last 50 years in the cattle industry in the Boundary. They told of how cattle used to be chased to the train station, currently the Station Pub, and loaded on train cars and shipped to Vancouver to auction and they talked about the many changes, highs and lows of the industry over the past 50 years. Carl told us that the Grand Forks Stock Breeders Association was started in 1933.

Dazzle Dance Studio has been coming up with some great results recently. The dancers won three golds and three high golds (scores better than 90) in a meet in Penticton last weekend. “The competition went great,” said dancer Oksana Stoochnoff. “We had our best results. We had a jazz number which we got high gold in. I also got an outstanding award. There was a musical theatre number which was also a gold winning number.” Perrie Austin and Danica Powell were also involved with solo numbers and struck gold there as well. There were three clubs competing in Penticton at the Cleland Theatre. The club has also recently competed at the Shine competition in Kelowna and Kootenay Dance Works in Cranbrook. “There were over 500 (dance) numbers at Kelowna,” said coach Ashlie Jmayoff. “There were 12 clubs there. We picked up one gold and five silvers there.” In Cranbrook, the club picked up six silvers. The studio has finished their touring competitions and is focusing on preparing for their home recital, which is June 6 at GFSS auditorium at 6 p.m. Jmayoff said the recital will feature all the dancers at the studio and is open to the public. The studio features close to 50 students from ages 2 1/2 to 17 years old. Stoochnoff said she enjoys the social aspect of dance as well the teamwork involved, “It’s fun. You get to perform on stage and show your dance to everyone there.” She added that it will be fun to see the other dancers perform at the recital. “We’re all pretty excited about watching all the dance groups and classes in the studio perform their numbers.”

(Fourth from left) Babe Ruth commissioner Peter Stoochnoff presented volunteers (from left) Doug Bannert, Dorothy Swinarchuk, Dave Burton, Ken Markortoff and Mick Hanlon with certificates of appreciation for their service with Babe Ruth Baseball. All have 15 years of service except for Hanlon who has 25. Missing from picture was Alana Tomilin, who was honoured for five years of service. Stoochnoff himself was inducted into the Pacific Northwest region’s Roll of Honour at the end of April. The Roll of Honour is the highest mark of distinction that can be given you by your peers, said Gord Welbourne, Pacific Northwest commissioner, in a press release. “Your longstanding dedication to the Babe Ruth program is acknowledged and you are most deserving of this prestigious recognition.” Submitted photo

In an effort to promote exercise and healthy lifestyles for local kids, Interior Health public health nurse Heather Shilton is working with local elementary schools and community partners to start a bicycle train for Grand Forks students. The goal is to have as many students from Hutton Elementary School and Perley Elementary School riding their bikes to school starting May 26 (the beginning of National Bike to Work Week) until the end of the school year. Each day, the bicycle train would start with a few students furthest from the schools and add more students along the route, just like a train adding on train cars. “We’re hoping for great participation. This is about having fun and getting our local young people thinking about healthy choices,” Shilton said. “Bicycle trains benefit students by starting their day off with moderate exercise, a proven way to kick start their brains and promote learning. Cycling also strengthens their bodies and helps them learn important road safety skills. Cycling is a form of active transportation which can improve the quality of the air we breathe by reducing vehicular emissions.” A specific route will be developed depending on participation,
consisting of established meeting points, specific times for the bus, and a particular list of children involved with volunteer leaders assigned to lead the train. In addition to partnering with the local schools and School District 51, ICBC, Grand Forks Cycling Club and volunteers have all been recruited to support the bike train. Students will need to have a bicycle and wear a bike helmet to participate. They will also need to participate in bicycle safety instruction. “Obviously, we have to make sure safety comes first with anything involving students, so a lot of work has gone in deciding the route for the train and ensuring we have adults on hand to get the train safely to the schools,” Shilton said. Participation in the bike train will be evaluated at the end of the school year to see how successful the project has been. Shilton hopes the bike train will turn into an annual event for local students. If parents are interested in having their child participate or would like more information, please contact one of the following: Marci Butler, principal of Hutton Elementary School 250-442-8275; Bob Chapman, principal of Perley Elementary School 250-442-2135; or Heather Shilton, PHN 250-4433170 (work), 250-442-2663 (home).

Auxiliaries attend conference SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
Last week the B.C. Association of Health Care Auxiliaries held its annual conference in Kelowna attended by 340 volunteers. Grand Forks was ably represented by Irene and George Seminoff, who have volunteered for years at the auxiliary’s thrift store here. Their work contributed this year to the purchase of a heart monitoring system which allows direct contact with cardiologists in Kelowna...an enormous achievement
which might have taken 10 years if not for the work of the auxiliary. There are 85 healthcare auxiliaries in B.C. and over 7000 volunteers who work in healthcare facilities, gift and thrift shops or have separate projects. They pay dues to belong and all funds raised go to their projects with no administration fees taken off. The money stays right in the community where you can actually see what it does and our young people also receive scholarships from them. Over $9 million was raised this past year for these purposes
throughout the province. There’s not a lot of hoopla associated with them but together they comprise some of the largest charities in the province. Over at Christina Lake, their auxiliary will soon be launching a campaign to buy accessories for the heart monitoring system and new wheelchairs for the hospital. Take time when you see these people volunteering to thank them and support them. We all benefit from their volunteer work.

Karen Anne Heiber Karen Anne Heiber passed away April 21, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona after a courageous battle with metastatic cancer. She was predeceased by her father Ivin Heiber and is survived by her mother, Anne Heiber of Saskatoon. She is also survived by her former husband and friend Michael Chouinard of Saskatoon, as well as sister Linda Nord of Toronto, brothers Stan Heiber (Sadie) of Saskatoon, Irvin Heiber (Jayne) of Ottawa, Ian Heiber (Darlene) of Calgary, along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Karen was born in Calgary on July 8, 1961 and spent her formative years in Saskatoon. She obtained a B.A. in French at the University of Saskatchewan and later received a degree in journalism from Ryerson University in Toronto. Following graduation, Karen’s work life in Toronto included working in marketing and communications for Ariad Communications and writing for Air Canada’s En Route magazine. Wanting a change of pace from big city life, Karen took a position as editor at The Grand Forks Gazette and later worked with CIBC as a personal banker. She then moved to Chilliwack, B.C., where she worked for the University of the Fraser Valley before returning to Saskatoon for positions at the University of Saskatchewan and the Water Security Agency. Throughout her painful illness, Karen never lost her sense of humour or her lifelong lust for adventure that had previously taken her around the globe. In the eighteen months of her illness, Karen continued to travel and create precious memorable experiences for those fortunate to have been part of her life at that time, and she spent the better part of her last two winters in her cozy little casa in Mesa, Arizona where she welcomed numerous visits from friends and family and fostered dogs. She was a friend to “Anipals” everywhere. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a fund in Karen’s memory: Lucky Dog Rescue Inc., 4400 N. Scottsdale Rd., Ste. 9-319, Scottsdale, Arizona, 85251 (480-704-4628), or online at https://fundrazr.com/ campaigns/4kOb1. A celebration of Karen’s life will take place June 7 at 3 p.m. at the University of the Fraser Valley Performance Theatre, UFV Chilliwack North (Yale Road) Campus, 45635 Yale Rd. (at Airport Road), Chilliwack, B.C.
