For people with limited mobility, getting around in Sidney is generally pretty good, says Brian Losie. Yet access could be better. Losie, a former member of the Town’s Healthy Community Committee and who now is the chair of the Community Development Committee, is coordinating the Sidney Access Awareness Fair on June 7 and 8. He is leading an effort of the municipality, Peninsula Celebrations Society (host), Panorama Recreation and the Sidney All Care Residence. They will bring service providers, local businesses and politicians together at the SHOAL Centre for an Access Awareness Day fair on June 7. Steven Heywood/News staff

Students from Sidney Elementary School and local singer/songwriter Paul Hann gather in the gym to record their new song in praise of the Growing Young Farmers Program.

Singing the praises of farms Making music with Growing Young Farmers Steven Heywood News staff

Students at Sidney Elementary School are singing the praises of the Growing Young Farmers Program. Close to 100 children filled the school gym recently to sing School Garden — or Growing Young Farmers Song, music written and composed by local singer/songwriter Paul Hann and the Grade 4/5 students. With video cameras rolling and a recording system set up, Hann led the group of enthusiastic students in a couple rehearsals, followed by a final take. The kids were joined by the Growing Young Farmers Program founder David Friend (aka Mr. Organic).

“The Growing Young Farmers program has been championed by teachers who have not only welcomed me into their classrooms, but have wholeheartedly involved themselves in the program with their students,” says Friend. The program educates students and encourages them to grow healthy, organic food as part of their normal school week. The song will be burned to discs and sold as a program fundraiser. The Growing Young Farmer’s Society brings topics such as organic gardening and agriculture to classrooms within the Greater Victoria area, and promotes food-security awareness within our community. “We are extending this year’s event into the next day, June 8,” Losie said. The accessibility fair will showcase products and services available to support people with mobility issues. There will an open house at Panorama the same day and the Town of Sidney will promote its efforts to make business more accessible. On that first day, Losie said plans are to have a few presentations, demonstrations and the presentation of the first Jeannette Hughes award. The award, he continued, is named for the late former town councillor and mobility activist. On June 8, Losie said they’ve tapped into local events such as a scooter rodeo at Sidney All Care, a wheelchair tennis demonstration at Iroquois Park (Panorama if weather is bad), and a close-captioned movie at Star Cinema. There are other events and presentations in the works, Losie said, the details of which are still being finalized. Issues of hearing, vision, mental impairment and general mobility issues are all part of the awareness events that weekend, Losie said. “The reason this resonates in Sidney is because Jeannette (Hughes) was a sparkplug on this issue.” The fair will help people connect with the resources available on the Saanich Peninsula. Oftentimes, Losie continued, it’s the little things that can make a difference in someone’s ability to get around and enjoy their community. Such things could be as simple as picnic tables that allow people in wheelchairs to fit in. Losie said since the area has a large population of elderly, making businesses and other facilities aware of these issues can go a long way to help people move around. Access Awareness Day starts Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at the SHOAL Centre in Sidney and runs to 4 p.m. For full details, visit www.peninsulacelebrations.ca.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES New system helping rec centre users to hear clearly Panorama recently installed an induction hearing loop to assist patrons with hearing impairments Devon MacKenzie News staff

A new system for the hearing impaired at Panorama Recreation Centre is allowing patrons of the popular rec centre to hear a little more clearly. The system — called an induction hearing loop — was installed recently at the Centre and is already making patrons with hearing impairments very happy. “The feedback we’ve received already is that the hearing loop makes attending group classes much easier for those with hearing loss,” explained Manager of Facilities and Operations at Panorama, Ron Reiberger.

“For the first time people with hearing impairments will be able to enjoy Panorama’s programming to a degree they haven’t been able to before.” – Ron Reiberger The hearing loop system allows hearing impaired patrons to switch their hearing aid to the telephone coil setting if they’re in proximity of the hearing loop, allowing their hearing aid to receive a clearer and more direct signal from the person they are listening to. “Roughly 75 to 80

“Because the hearing aids are already equipped with the necessary technology, there’s no need for the user to have any additional equipment, there’s no frequency to find, there’s no Bluetooth to pair, it’s so simple. Users just

said Archer. The technology is common in Europe, continued Archer, and is even legislated by the Disability Discrimination Act in the U.K., but hasn’t become the norm in North America yet. “We’re trying to promote it locally because it’s a low-cost solution to increase accessibility,” said Archer. Archer and Advance Listening Systems recently installed hearing loops in all 56 branches of Vancity Credit Unions in Victoria and the lower mainland and are seeing more and more interest in the systems. “We’re promoting it mainly to assure people with hearing impairments that they can actually go to a noisy place, attend classes, order things and speak with bank tellers or cashiers without feeling embarrassed or feeling that they won’t be heard,” Archer said. “We get lots of clients who say they don’t go to coffee shops, or banks or the grocery store because it’s too difficult to hear clearly in a busy place. Hearing loss or impairment is the invisible disability and people who suffer from it often take a step back in society.” The hearing loop system at Panorama Recreation Centre is currently installed at the

front desk and in the fitness studio and Reiberger said he hopes some of the next areas to receive the technology will be the boardroom, the pool mezzanine and the reception counter at Greenglade Community Centre.

“For the first time people with hearing impairments will be able to enjoy Panorama’s programming to a degree they haven’t been able to before,” said Reiberger. reporter@peninsula newsreview.com

Speak, before the dam breaks

A

spike in domestic violence in B.C. this year is a stark reminder that more must be done to address the reasons why men focus their emotional disturbance on women they know. More often than not, it’s women who suffer at the hands of their male partners in cases of domestic violence. There are certainly studies and case files of why men become violent and their inappropriate actions towards women and others. This isn’t an attempt to analyze what is going through someone’s mind when a relationship ends or life’s stresses become almost unbearable. It’s a call Everyone needs to to politicians, activists, speak up ... men health care and women professionals and law enforcement agencies to not just leap to the defence of victims after the fact, but to provide resources to anyone when they need help dealing with massive and unwelcome change — ideally before the dam breaks. It’s also a call to parents, family and friends to confront emotions and uncomfortable situations with their loved ones head-on and change attitudes about how men deal with it. This is not responding to violence with violence — it’s simply a request to be willing to talk about life with a friend or partner instead of avoiding it, keeping it balled up inside and allowing it to fester. It’s about eliminating the concept of shame when to indulge in it is not appropriate for an individual or their social circles. It’s also about an individual being responsible for their reactions to any given situation, stressful or not. Only the individual can control how they react and if we want them to avoid violence, they need the tools in their lives to take a better path than the one that leads them to violence against another person. Everyone needs to speak up — if they feel threatened or if they are in crisis — men and women. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@peninsulanewsreview.com or fax 250-656-5526. John? This is a classic example of the religious fervor that replaces reason among the southern faithful of the ALR. And how is the status quo working? Summerland council just voted to swap 80 hectares of flat farmland for 90 hectares further away in the Summerland Hills. The town is on restricted lakeshore terrain and the council wants to increase its urban zone, using the community need provisions that are enhanced by the current legislative amendments. This was after a loud demonstration organized with the help of a fake grassroots protest machine called LeadNow, complete with slick signs and website. (LeadNow also helped round up anti-pipeline protesters this past weekend.) The media were fooled as usual, but not Summerland council. LeadNow has moved on to lining up people to flood the Agricultural Land Commission with form letters and petitions against Summerland’s plan. The B.C. Agriculture Council, whose board first supported and then objected to the ALR amendments, has clarified its objections. It wants flexibility for secondary uses extended to the prime farmland zones of the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island. Hats off to Eric Driller for his excellent letter, A few ideas to enhance the Saanich Peninsula (PNR, May 7). He makes practical, realistic and forward looking suggestions. But here is the rub: the implementation of his ideas requires the amalgamation of Sidney, North and Central Saanich as he points out. That’s a non-starter. Our local elected officials have demonstrated time and again they will fight to maintain the status quo. Logic and common sense will not convince them to relinquish their small empires, even if it means the Peninsula will not be able to reach its potential. Sad. Carl Eriksen Central Saanich

points regarding an over emphasis on a university education and focusing more on general skills training for a proportion of our students. However, where he quotes Christy Clark as saying 20 per cent of B.C. students don’t graduate from high school, could that, in part at least, be due to an education system grossly underfunded for the last decade? With insufficient funds to provide special needs teachers, failing or unmotivated students are placed in regular classrooms, with no special attention being provided. No wonder so many of them fall between the cracks. Geoffrey Mills Sidney

A new program at Deep Cove Elementary School is encouraging children to engage in hands-on activities based on their interests. The program, called Genius Hour, allows students to pursue a topic or interest of their choosing — anything from cooking, sewing and dance to computer coding or academics. “This program has been modified at Deep Cove to allow students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 to explore an activity that might not otherwise be available to them at school,” explained the school’s Vice Principal, Steve MacGregor, adding that the children are in groups based on interest and not age. “It allows them to make connections with students from other grades and classes, not to mention teachers and parent volunteers from the community,” he said. Highland Games this weekend Central Saanich’s Carl Jensen says event adds elite women’s division Devon MacKenzie News staff

A new battle of the pipes marks the 2014 Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival this weekend at Topaz Park. This year marks the 151st year of the games which take place May 17 and 18. New this year is the Canada vs. U.S. Grade 1 Pipe Band Competition which will pit the top Grade 1 pipe band from Canada (the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band) against the top U.S. pipe band (the LA Scots Pipe Band) as they prepare to head to world championships in Scotland later this year. The Victoria Highland Games Association also added an elite women’s category in the heavy events this year, something Carl Jensen, a member and competitor at the games for the last 10 years, says adds to the experience. “We’re seeing more and more female competitors and now that we’ve added the elite women category, spectators will be able to see both male and female world-class athletes at the Games representing the professional side of the sport,” he said. Aside from the sporting events, the weekend will feature more cultural

everyone and it really brings the community together,” Jensen said. The Games, which according to the association are the longest-running cultural event in the region, moved to Topaz Park in 2008. The association has run the Games since 1937 to preserve the cultural aspect while making sure to offer different events and entertainment. “What’s amazing is how much the Games have evolved and changed over the years,” said Jensen. “The Games have grown into an all encompassing event that celebrate Scotland’s culture and heritage. There aren’t too many other family events out there that allow people to immerse themselves in the culture for the day.” Gates are open for the games from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Advance tickets ($12 for single day adult admission, $10 for seniors and youth) for the games are available at The Strath Liquor Store, Hotel Grand Pacific and Liquor Planet. Children under 12 get in free. Full price tickets will be available at the gates on the day of, cash only. For more information visit victoriahighlandgames.com. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

As the Pete Seeger song says, Times, They Are A-Changing. That was true for the Peninsula Track Club this year. For the last dozen years, the Island Track and Field series opened with the George Dean Memorial event at the Parkland Secondary School track, attracting 250 athletes from up and down the Island to the two-day meet. With the School District declaring last year that the aging oval was no longer to be used for other than recreational purposes, Port Alberni was chosen for this year’s kick-off event. Although their wet and windy weather was far from summerlike last weekend, the small contingent of Pen Track members made a very successful start to their season. Twelve-year-old Conan Loughnane led the winning charge by capturing both the 100m, the 300m and the Shot Put events. The Kirkendale brothers,

Joining them on the podium was Alyssa Jensen, 12, who was second in the 300m and third in the Hammer Throw and David Johnson, 15, who took second in his 1200m race. Jacqueline Gaby, last year’s B.C. High School champion in the 1500m Race Walk, opened with an impressive 19:40.56 finish to take the 3000m Race Walk event while Masters athlete Mette Fosberg (W60) took both the 100m and the 200m. Fellow Master Peggy Morfitt (W75) won all four of her events (discus, javelin, shot and hammer), while Anne Murfitt (W55) secured wins in the Hammer and Discus, and took second place in both her Javelin and Shot competitions. The two Pen Track Masters men, Carl Jensen (M40) and Peter Auvinen (M65) swept all of their events, with Jensen winning the Discus, Shot and Hammer, and Auvinen taking the Javelin as well as the Discus, Shot and Hammer.
