95 students amazed by literacy An event organized by literacy coordinator, Dierra Maynard teaches kids life skills, while they think they are just having fun. Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
The second annual Amazing Literacy Race was held in Princeton on Thursday, May 8. 95 students from Vermilion Forks Elementary School along with the help and support of local businesses and a team of volunteers participated in literary challenges during the day long event. A scavenger hunt at the Princeton Museum took students through a Princeton History Mystery. At the Princeton and District Skills Center a career game challenge ensued taking the students from Geeks to Technology Gods. At the Princeton Water Park, the students were educated in Pool Safety and participated in a physical challenge. The Art Smart Challenge saw the students put specific words into a poem or short story. Fortis returned to the Amazing Race this year to teach students about saving energy, and about gas meter safety. Something to remember was, “If it’s not in use, you are to cut the juice.” Valley First presented a crash course in income, sensible spending and how to create a budget to the participants. Each of the eight teams were given $20 to spend at Cooper’s Foods to shop for a budget-friendly yet healthy meal. The purchases made went back to Valley First for donation to Feed the Valley and

Fresh off the production line from HUB in Abbotsford, Princeton’s brand-new fire truck rolled into town on Thursday, May 1. A few excited members of the department met Joe, from HUB who drove the truck into Princeton for a quick stop before heading off to a weekend show. The truck was returned to Princeton and keys were officially presented to Fire Chief Eric Gregson on Tuesday, May 6, by Mayor Frank Armitage. The true 4” relay pumper truck, equipped to carry 2,500 imperial gallons of water, came with a $358,000 price tag and will service Princeton for the next 30 years. The Princeton Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at the Brown Bridge Pub on Saturday, May 24 to raise funds to restore their ‘54 Bickle Seagrave —Princeton’s first pumper-truck which served the area for 40 years. The Seagrave has 15,115 original miles, the tank still holds water and the pump still works. Tickets are $10 each and are available from members at the hall on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Greetings from the Garden Club Doreen Poulsen Princeton Garden Club
The club is flourishing these days. We now have 19 members in our group and we always welcome anyone, young or old, who would like to join us. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. at the OAP Hall. One of our members, George Harry, has been making up monthly newsletters which address timely facts and ideas for gardening in our challenging climate. A few are being laminated and placed into local restaurants and coffee shops for everyone’s enjoyment. Thank you, George for doing this for us all. Also in March, George pruned the apple tree in front of Co Co’s and the club was invited to take part as he showed us the techniques for fruit tree pruning. A delicious lunch was served to all that attended. Thanks George and Co Co’s. Two other members have shared their knowledge with us as well. In February, Jack Gardiner gave us a very informative talk on Mason bees and their houses. He went a step further and gave each of us a mason bee house that he had made. In March, John Sandness gave us a well-prepared talk on birdhouses. Making them from new
and recycled building materials, tips on where to locate them and maintain them. Thank you gentlemen for passing on your expert knowledge. On March 16 we traveled to Hedley’s Hitching Post to join the Keremeos Garden Club in a St. Patrick’s lunch. We meet with them a few times a year and thoroughly enjoy our time with them. In April, Cory Oerlemans from the committee for the beautification of Princeton joined our meeting and asked for our input on the public areas and boulevards along Hwy 3. A few of us had a couple more meetings on the subject and then passed our ideas on to Cory to bring up at their next meeting. We are awaiting follow-up on this. Spring has finally made a resounding appearance so its time to prepare those gardens for planting. If you don’t know what to do then its time that you purchased one of our books “Yes, You Can Garden In Princeton.” The club will be at the Flea Market on Saturday May 24. We will be selling our book, as well as bedding plants and perennials. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have! Books are also available at Billy’s Restaurant, Everything Pets, Sunflower Gallery, Fletchers Building Supply, the Image Emporium and Winking Pedlar. Happy gardening and hope to see you May 24th.

In late 2013, Miranda Mezzatesta and Jeff Dowling had good news to share with family and friends. There would be a baby brother or sister for five year old Caden. Their happiness was suddenly marred by problems with the pregnancy. Intitial testing stated that it was possible that their unborn child had Down Syndrome. The young couple were soon relieved to find that the test for Down Syndrome was negative, only to be devastated by the news that baby could possibly be suffering from Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome, a condition which is caused by an error in cell division. It was later determined that Trisome 18 was negative as well. High-Speed Internet. Where you live.
Government of British Columbia and Xplornet Partner to Bring Affordable High-Speed to Remote B.C. Residents. Xplornet Communications Inc. is pleased to announce a partnership with the government of British Columbia to help bridge the urban/rural digital divide in rural and remote British Columbia. The initiative is a multi-year program to make Internet connectivity more affordable in rural and remote areas where installation costs can be high. The program will provide a subsidy of up to $250, or half of the cost of an installation of broadband equipment to new residential and business customers within Xplornet’s industry leading 4G rural broadband satellite footprint. This will significantly reduce the costs of installation, costs that may have been a barrier to the adoption of high-speed Internet. “The government of British Columbia deserves significant praise for a program that helps break down one of the last barriers to full connectivity in the province – namely the high cost of broadband installation in remote parts of BC. Now, even the most remote British Columbians can affordably benefit from the transformative power of high-speed Internet to connect them to the global economy,” said Xplornet President Allison Lenehan. Xplornet is the country’s leading rural broadband Internet provider and takes pride in connecting over 200,000 Canadians to the world. The commitment to offering every Canadian reliable, affordable and fast Internet is shared by an ever-expanding network of over 450 local dealers, including 60 in British Columbia alone. For more information about Xplornet high-speed Internet and how you may benefit from the British Columbia Broadband Satellite Initiative, visit xplornet.com or call 855-494-1079. Do politicians listen? Guest Editorial Black Press
Apathy in the political process has reached an all-time high in recent years, with the perception that elected representatives at all levels of government are not really listening to public concerns. However, there is evidence this week that the provincial government is heeding public feedback. An all-party committee of MLAs has unanimously supported a proposal from finance Minister Mike de Jong that henceforth all B.C. politicians will publish their expense receipts on-line. The proposal, clearly a response to the flap over legislature Speaker Linda Reid’s expensesincluding nearly $5,500 in business-class air travel for her spouse, since repaid-elicited a few grumbles from NDP MLAs over the work involved. But it seems that MLAs overall agreed with de Jong’s assessment that steps need to be taken to restore public trust, after recent “unreasonable” expense abuses in B.C. The auditor general reported on the problems with the MLA expence accounts in July of 2012. At that time NDP MLA John Horgan said “This isn’t a partisan issue. This is an issue of our ability to manage our affairs. And I think the public, when they look at this, are going to shake their heads in disappointment, and that’s a slight for all of us.” In Alberta ministers and staff have had their expenses posted on-line since October of 2012. Meanwhile Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick has apparently taken note of written feedback from B.C. residents in amending the proposed Bill 24, which would make changes to the province’s Agricultural Land Reserve. The contentious two-zone provision remains, dividing the ALR into one area (Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan) where farmland would be protected from non-agricultural development and another (essentially the rest of B.C.) where farmers might have options to invite in “value-added” industries that could include oil and gas development. The amended legislation has received guarded endorsement from the B.C. Agriculture Council, although NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons says Bill 24 is still probably the worst piece of legislation he has seen. The actual impact of both of these provincial policies remains to be seen, of course. Politicians generally are past-masters in the art of simulated action and manipulating public opinion through carefully stage-arranged response. But the B.C. Liberals have everything to gain and nothing to lose by demonstrating a greater level of responsiveness to public opinion-rather than the predictable chorus of partisan support. Giving the ultimate gift Lisa Carleton

Image having a constant cough, trying medication and ending up blind in one eye. Breathing becomes increasingly more difficult as each day passes. Eventually, you are surviving only by taking oxygen 24 hours a day and your doctor informs you that there is no treatment and no cure for your condition. This medical scenario is exactly what happened to local, Cliff Glover and the importance of the results is why he’s decided to share his story. Glover was diagnosed with Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) - a chronic and ultimately fatal disease. The only chance of survival was a lung transplant. Refusing to “lay down and die,” as Glover puts it, he decided to do all he could to get healthy. Exercise, lose weight - positive things, but eventually he had to admit he wasn’t winning the battle. Glover was registered for a lung transplant (put on the list) As they live in rural Princeton, Kathryn was concerned about not getting the call due to phone line issues and no cell service being available—she began an internet search for help. The Iridium RoadPost company found out about the couples situation and came to their aid, supplying them with a satellite phone to carry with them at all times. They waited for the call. It came eight months after being registered. The Glover’s were ready and headed out—only to be turned around enroute as the transplant was cancelled. Two months later, the call came again and once more they were ready and left immediately. Upon arrival to the hospital in Vancouver, the couple were surprised to find out that Cliff would receive not one, but two lungs that day. Glover spent five days in ICU and transplant recovery for 16 days and will be taking anti-rejection medication for the rest of his life. “Dr. Yee (Glover’s surgeon) was a caring and

humble man,” says Glover about his experience. “All the doctors and nurses were the very best.” Giving the most credit to his situation, was in respect to his wife, Kathryn. “She was a shining example of home support,” he said. Now, two years and eight months later, Glover is healthy and active and sharing his story to encourage others to become organ donors. On Wednesday, May 14, from 1 - 4 p.m., at Cooper’s Foods, Cliff Glover will assist in registering you to become an organ donor. In British Columbia alone, there are over 400 people on the ‘waiting for transplant’ list. 80 per cent of British Columbians have said they would register to be an organ donor, but only 17 per cent have. Give the ultimate gift - live life and pass it on.

Appreciation from the Doug’s Homestead family Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
Going into their seventh season as owners/operators of Doug’s Homestead, a business that has been a part of the community for almost 25 years, Brent and Linette McClelland feel they have much to be thankful for. The McClelland’s purchased Doug’s Homestead in 2007. “Doug” stayed on for a year, teaching them all about the business. I put ideas to the “Doug Test still,” said Brent, he is my mentor— sometimes I listen... and sometimes I don’t,” he adds with a chuckle. He also says that the best thing he learned from Doug was, “Quality in and quality out,” that is what made Doug’s Homestead so successful. The McClellands came from the Lower Mainland, spending a bit of time in Hedley and living right next to the Homestead. Two years ago, the family made the decision to move into to Princeton. “Princeton has that hometown feel, just what we were looking for— the place to raise our kids in.” Brent says that the community of Princeton welcomed his family— “embraced them actually.” “I just love the fact that I can walk down the street, knowing that people appreciate what we do.” He
says that everyone is so friendly and that people are always willing to help. Brent remembers the day he was trying to get an oven through the window, (too large for the door)— two local police officers pulled over to the Homestead to give him a hand. “It was just awesome.” As well as raising their children in a community they love, the McClellands enjoy volunteering within the community. Linette does bookkeeping for Little Folks Nursery School and Brent enjoys coaching basketball at the high school. They also very much enjoy supporting local organizations such as the curling club, chamber, Rotary and groups such as the Fall Fair and Little Britches Rodeo. The McClellands are always trying to come up with ways to enhance their business, to make things better for their customers. This year, they purchased a brand new smoker for the Homestead. Having two smokers on site has enabled them to bring back Jerky Nuggets, an item that has been missed. Nine flavours of pepperoni are now available as well. Doug’s Homestead is currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. After the May long weekend, they will be open seven a week.

Right: Brent McClelland proudly shows off the Jerky Nuggets that are available once again with thanks to the extra help he has with the Homesteads brand new smoker. Brent is also pleased that the new smoker will aid in his new endeavor with local entrepreneur, Ed Vermette. Visit Doug’s Homestead this coming Friday (May 16) to witness an exciting new product launch! Keep up to Doug’s Homestead on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! Lisa Carleton/Spotlight

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Jackie Chaston, on May 1, 2014 in Lacombe, Alberta, at the age of 81. She was born to Stanley and Margaret Bennett in Dryden, Ontario, and grew up in Vermilion Bay, Ontario. She lived in Kenora, Ontario, for a number of years where she earned her degree as an LPN. Jackie moved to White Rock, British Columbia, where she met and married Ross Chaston. After many years working as an LPN, Jackie had to retire due to health reasons. It was at that time that Jackie and Ross moved to Princeton, British Columbia. Jackie enjoyed acting, painting and was active in the church and the community. Recently, Jackie and Ross had moved to Clive, Alberta, to be closer to their family. Jackie was predeceased by her husband, Ross in 2013, her parents, Stanley and Margaret Bennett, and her sister, Shirley Bennett. She has beft to mourn her children, Randy (Linda) Hill, Glory (Tom) Lerch and Deb (Doug) Gilbertson, grandchildren, Kristin Hill (Coy Berard), Alyssa (Tim) Edison, Jared (Jess) Hill, Robert (Bobbi) Fitzgerald, Terry Fitzgerald, Shandi (Brian) Lauridsen and Randi (Eric) Piovesan, and great grandchildren, James, Lucas and Josephine Hill, Kianna and Connor Edison, Samantha and Alex Fitzgerald, Brayden Lauridsen and Ashton and Arizona Piovesan. LEILA MARGARET, February 8, 1920 - April 29, 2014:
Leila Margaret Irwin passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon April 29, 2014 in Calgary, Alberta, with her family at her side, at the age of 94. She was born February 8, 1920 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Mary Colloton (nee Russell) and Richard Ernest Colloton. She is survived by her children, Albert Richard Irwin of Vancouver, Dr. Marsha Lee Anne Irwin (Alexander Laing) of Calgary, and Thomas Russell Irwin (Birgit) of Brisbane Australia; grandchildren Kelly Irwin, Jennifer, David (Olivia) and Rebecca (Adam Duron) Laing, and Adam Irwin; and great-grandchildren Hamish and Sabrina Laing. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Albert Keith Irwin in 2006 and also by her parents, seven sisters and two brothers. She was born and went to school in Saskatoon, SK, followed by a move to Vancouver, BC where she met her husband, a decorated World War II navigator. They had a very happy life together for 57 years, in Princeton, Kamloops and Kelowna, BC. For the past four years she has resided in Calgary. A woman of sparkling personality, she awed us with her piercing insights and independent spirit, amused us with her Irish wit, dazzled us with her beauty and embraced us with unTuali¿ed love. She will be greatly missed but her stories will live on forever. A Celebration of Life will be held privately. Interment and Graveside Service will be held at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. A special thank you to all those who cared for her in her last weeks and months. In living memory of Leila Irwin a tree will be planted in Fish Creek Provincial Park.
