Labour blues at CP Rail Reduced rest and the new super pool causing work woes for CP Rail running trades workers Alex Cooper

editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

Ask any railroader in town their opinion on Hunter Harrison and you’ll almost certainly hear a string of expletives surrounding his name. Dubbed the “turnaround ace” in a recent Globe and Mail feature, the CP Rail CEO has been leaving his mark on the railway since taking over from Fred Green two years ago. He’s done wonders for shareholder value, laying off thousands of staff, moving the company’s headquarters from downtown Calgary to an industrial railyard in the southeast corner of the city. He’s taken what was considered North America’s poorest performing railway and turned it around — share prices have sky rocketed, but at the expense of workers and employee relations. When Harrison was appointed and company-wide layoffs were announced, I spoke to many conductors and engineers in town. Collectively known as the running trades, they didn’t seem too concerned about the new regime. “Somebody still has to drive the trains,” is a comment I heard frequently. Recent changes to working conditions have changed their tune. CP Rail has eliminated local provisions that allowed for 30 hours rest instead of the usual 24 hours, and the three working pools have been grouped into one, causing much bigger uncertainty about where and when they will be going to work. “All of these things, you just add them all up, and it puts them more off kilter all the time, and it has an effect on fatigue and how they work, planning their own personal life as well,” said Dave Able, the Teamsters general chairman for locomotive engineers. “It has a huge effect on lifestyle as well.” I spoke to Able after local union representatives declined to speak to us — a departure from the past when they used to speak freely about labour issues. Able, who is based in Calgary and nearing retirement, has been designated the spokesperson for the railroaders. He explained, on the record, what the impact of the changes are and why they’re an issue for the running trades.

Ladder 6, a 100-foot American LaFrance Aerial Platform Apparatus arrived in Revelstoke in January, replacing a 37-year-old vehicle. The truck, fully extended, towered over the 100 or so people in attendance. They were offered tours of the fire hall, a highway rescue demonstration and free burgers and cake that were served up the volunteer Alex Cooper/Revelstoke Times Review firefighters.

Since the early 1980’s, running trades in Revelstoke have been allowed 30 hours rest between shifts. The national collective bargaining agreement allowed for 24 hours, but local rules allotted 30. The extra six hours meant that if you were on an overnight shift, you had a

No charges are being laid in connection with last month's death of Dean Pratico, RCMP said last week. Pratico was injured following an altercation on Friday, Apr. 25, shortly after 11 a.m. According to reports, he confronted a 34-year-old man who was speeding through a school zone. There was an altercation between the two men, which resulted in Pratico smashing his head on the ground. He was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, where he died of his injuries late the following day. Following the incident, the RCMP put out a call for witnesses. After more than a week of investigation, they issued a news release on May 6 saying Pratico's

death was determined to be "not criminal in nature." "The investigation into Pratico's death revealed that the incident was not instigated by the 34-year-old Revelstoke man involved in the interaction, and he has since been cleared of all wrong-doing," wrote RCMP Const. Kris Clark in a news

Unfortunately, those involved continue to be further victimized through inappropriate phone calls and postings on social media networks." Clark would not provide any further details on what happened between the two men, saying it was out of the interest of protecting innocent parties. "I would love to be able to quash all the rumours," he told the Times Review. "The simple fact is we need to protect citizens that may be subject to the investigation and no charges are laid. There's more to consider here than the rumour mill." The RCMP is thanking members of the public who helped with the investigation.

Colin Martin committed for extradition to United States Martin, a convicted drug dealer, connected to 2009 suicide of Revelstoke’s Samuel Lindsay-Brown

Kamloops This Week

A Malakwa man alleged by American authorities to have been the kingpin of a cross-border drugsmuggling ring will be sent to the U.S. to stand trial on conspiracy charges. In B.C. Supreme Court in Kamloops on Friday, May 9, Colin Martin was committed for extradition to Seattle, where American prosecutors have charged him with conspiracy to traffic in marijuana, cocaine and MDMA. There is a mandatory 30-day waiting period before surrender. Martin was taken into custody following Justice William Ehrcke’s decision, but he is eligible to apply for bail. Martin’s lawyer, Eric Purtzki, said a decision on a potential appeal of the extradition order has not yet been made. “I am satisfied that the evidence . . . discloses a case that would qualify for his committal to trial in Canada,” Ehrcke said in his decision. “I order that he be committed into custody to prepare for surrender.” The two-day extradition hearing heard a summary of the evidence American authorities have on Mar-

tin, who is from Malakwa, and his alleged involvement in a large-scale drug-trafficking ring that saw marijuana and MDMA shipped by helicopter to remote locations in northern Idaho and Washington state in exchange for cocaine, money and firearms. U.S. authorities allege Martin would hire people in B.C. to load the helicopters with as much as $5-million worth of marijuana or MDMA, then pay pilots to fly the choppers to pre-determined locations across the U.S.-Canada border. The haul of B.C. bud or pills would allegedly be unloaded by a ground crew in the U.S., and cocaine, firearms and money would be loaded into the helicopter for transport back to Canada. According to federal Crown prosecutor Andrew Majawa, Martin’s crews made approximately three cross-border trips every two weeks. The smuggling operation is linked to the February 2009 death of Samuel Lindsay-Brown. The 24-year-old Revelstoke native was piloting one of the choppers linked to the smuggling ring and was arrested after landing with 400 pounds of marijuana in Washington state. He later hanged himself in a Spokane jail cell.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency investigation into the operation resulted in multiple arrests on both sides of the border. According to U.S. court documents, Martin offered in 2009 to make a deal with the DEA that would see him roll on other smugglers in exchange for the opportunity to continue his trafficking business unimpeded for 10 years. Authorities said they did not accept his offer. In a March 2010 interview with the Eagle Valley News, Martin said he was trying to shake his drug dealing past. Four months later, he was arrested after police raided his Malakwa home and a workshop on an adjacent property. Police uncovered an underground bunker with about 3,000 marijuana plants. In March, Martin pleaded guilty in a Salmon Arm courtroom to charges of production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking that resulted from the 2010 raid. He is due back in court on May 29 to set a date for sentencing. In 2006, Martin was sentenced to serve two-and-a-half years behind bars after being convicted of Canadian charges stemming from another cross-border drug-smuggling ring.

Family of Joshua Jeffs pushes to renew search for missing son Alex Cooper

editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

Nearly five months after their son Joshua Jeffs went missing, his family has not given hope that he will be found. Jeffs' father, and now his mother, have traveled to Revelstoke recently in order to be here during a renewed search for their son. After his father left, his mother Charlene Ehlert hitchhiked here from The Pas in northern Manitoba, with the hopes of being here while a search is conducted. "The family was told they were going to start their searching come spring," Ehlert told the Times Review. "I've come here and I'm trying to stay here until they do a

search, but they're not really planning a search as of yet." Jeffs went missing on December 19, 2013, after he ditched a stolen car near 12 Mile after fleeing from police. Revelstoke RCMP had started following Jeffs at about 5:30 a.m. that morning. They tracked him to the end of a logging road near 12 Mile, south of Revelstoke, where he crashed the car and fled into the woods. A woman that was with him was caught and arrested. RCMP searched for Jeffs that day and a second search involving Search & Rescue was conducted two days later to no avail. He was not officially listed as missing until Jan. 2. Now that the snow has melted,

Staff-Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said the RCMP is in discussion with SAR about when to renew the search. "We are just waiting with Search and Rescue to determine a date which will be most effective to

ensure the most ground is available to be covered and that way we can ensure we have truly and completely searched the area," he said. The plan is to start with a ground search. If that is unsuccessful, other means, including ATV, boat and air, may be used. "We don't know how long he was moving about so we're uncertain the distance he may have traveled," said Grabinksy. "A lot of that terrain is difficult to work in, so we assume he would not have traveled far in certain directions. But we don't know the exact distance, it depends on how the search goes that day." Jeffs' mother is hoping he will be found so closure can be brought to his family and friends.

"Being here a little bit has helped me," Ehlert said. "(RCMP) did take me out to the site. They have been very helpful to me. They showed videos of the last place he stopped in. I really want to take his remains home because of none of us are from here or anywhere near here." Jeffs disappearance is similar to that of David Klammer, who went missing near 12 Mile in October 2012. RCMP and Search and Rescue conducted several ground searches that fall and a helicopter search the following spring, to no avail. His body wasn't found until early May 2013, when two campers found his body south of Shelter Bay, about 60 kilometres south of Revelstoke.

‘Wonderful kids’ lost in Slocan Lake Greg Nesteroff Black Press

The man whose borrowed canoe was used in a tragic mishap on Slocan Lake on Saturday says the four victims were “wonderful kids.” “They were really full of life and fun. Just marvellous people,” Dan Nicholson, publisher of the Valley Voice, said Monday. “It’s a huge loss.” Lily Harmer-Taylor, 19, died after the canoe overturned just off Bigelow Bay on Saturday afternoon. Jule Wiltshire-Padfield, 15, Hayden Kyle, 21, and Skye Donnet, 18, remain missing. All four lived in the New Denver area although Kyle was originally from Gibsons. Kyle and Harmer-Taylor both lived with Nicholson’s family in Rosebery, while Donnet lived with them for a while when he was younger.

Nicholson said he knew all of them except Kyle since infancy, as they were friends of his own kids. Each had one parent living locally and another somewhere else and they “bounced back and forth.” Kyle had been staying with Nicholson’s family for a couple of months. He moved from the Sunshine Coast to Nelson where worked on a demolition job with Donnet, and the two became close friends. Once the job ended, Kyle needed a place to live, and asked Nicholson if they had a spare room. They agreed he could stay with them until he got himself back on his feet. Harmer-Taylor and Wiltshire-Padfield were a couple and planning to hitchhike to Regina to see her father. She was just finishing high school in New Denver. Last fall, Nicholson and

his wife offered her a place to stay. On Saturday, the four took the canoe from Nicholson’s porch, but left the lifejackets sitting in the mud room. He said they didn’t tell him they were taking it, although he’s never had any problem with them using it. “They’re 15 to 21. They don’t tell me everything they’re doing. If they’d asked, of course I would have said ‘Yes — be sure to grab the life jackets.’” Nicholson knows they reached New Denver and spent a few hours in town because he saw some of them there. The tragedy occurred on the return trip. He believes the three locals were experienced canoeists. “They grew up on this side of the lake. They weren’t perhaps the strongest swimmers, but I always felt they could handle themselves in the water. I don’t know if Hayden could swim or paddle.” At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nicholson’s son felt unwell, so he took him to the local hospital. When he got home, he saw several emergency vehicles go by. Minutes later, Donnet’s mother phoned to ask if he knew what was going on. Soon after, he went outside and met the mother of the local search and rescue leader who told him that Harmer-Taylor was in trouble and suggested that he return to the hospital. “They brought her in and tried to warm her up,” Nicholson said. They worked on her for five hours. “They tried the defibrillator several times.” But to no avail. Harmer-Tayor died overnight. Her three companions remain missing. Nicholson said Slocan Lake is “awfully deep” at the point they went in, with an eddy that washes around the bay. Sunday night, a large group met for a healing ceremony. “There was a fire down on the beach and people put candles out into the water. They threw wreathes,” Nicholson said. “It’s devastating. It’s incredibly tragic.”

Union bogged down as result of aggressive CP Rail discipline goal is to bog down the union in grievances in order to stretch its resources. The company and union are scheduled to begin negotiations on a new contract this year. “If you’ve spoken with any railroaders around town, they’re more

than willing to tell you how upset they are,” said Able. “I don’t understand what was so difficult about the way it was, to be quite honest. We’ve been able to manage it since long before any of us were born, let alone thought about a train.”

Running a business or nonprofit that makes revenues (social enterprise)? Free support is available! A CP Rail train passes through Revelstoke.

CP Rail, from page 1 bit more leeway to book time off to get off that shift and onto a more normal routine. The 30 hour rest provision gave running trades’ workers more chances to regulate their schedules, said Able. “When they had 30 hours rest, you would get in at 10 p.m. and you could book 30 hours rest until 4 a.m.” he said. “Now, if you book 24, you’re into a rut of always working nights if you come in.”

The super pool

The other issue is the new super pool. Traditionally, Revelstoke has had three pools of engineers and conductors. The Shuswap pool would handle trains to and from Kamloops. The mountain pool would handle trains to and from Field. The third was the coal pool to Golden. The mountain run is where conductors and engineers would start out. With it’s steep grades and long tunnels, it is a more challenging section of track and the running trades people would try to get out of the mountain and on the Kamloops run. It’s regarded as an easier drive and there’s more to do in Kamloops than in Field or Golden once you get there and are waiting for a train to get back home.

The pools gave workers more certainty with their schedules. They could get off a shift, check the board and have a pretty good idea of when they would be back on a train, depending on how much time they booked off. “It gave them the opportunity to choose which one they wanted to work for their own lifestyle,” said Able. Earlier this year, all three pools were combined into one super pool. No longer can senior engineers choose which route they want to be on. It’s also much harder to determine when you’ll be called to drive again. Instead of a list of 25 trains to look at, there’s a list of 50 trains, and more conductors and engineers on the board ahead of you. Predicting when the call will come in to go to work is much harder. “When you triple the numbers in terms of what you have to look at in terms of variables, it becomes impossible to be able to determine with any kind of certainly what time you’ll be going to work until maybe you’re within an hour of going, and by then it’s too late to get any sleep,” said Able.

The impact

The appeal of working for CP Rail is mixed. The long and variable hours are counteracted by

the excellent pay, benefits and pension. Talking to people that work for the running trades, the changes have tilted the balance where many are questioning their future with the company. The changes have led to numerous resignations — 21 since February 2013 and nine since the super pool was announced, according to Able. I’ve talked to two people who, after being laid off for a long time, decided not to go back to work when called back because the pay was no longer worth it. CP Rail recently started advertising for a new class of conductors to fill the void. Union officials are currently protesting the changes to the labour relations board. While they do that, they are also busy with a backlog of other grievances, including a number involving employees that have been fired for a variety of reasons. “We’re in the grievance process but the system right now is very much clogged. The company, we believe, has intentionally clogged up the system so it will take a long time to get them there,” said Able. He couldn’t provide exact numbers on how many people were fired in Revelstoke recently, but said his office is handling about five times as many grievances as normal. He believes the

BY NORM MACDONALD In my last two MLA reports, I have discussed the problems with Bill 24, amendments to the Agriculture Act that will fundamentally change the way decisions are made concerning the development of agricultural land. With the passing

of Bill 24, we will essentially remove any independent oversight of the way these decisions are made. Instead, every withdrawal from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) will be decided upon based on political criteria by politicians. There is nothing defensible about that. Rather than putting in place a framework for dismantling the ALR in a way that serves only the best interest of politicians, we need to be having a much larger discussion about a progressive food policy for the entire province. Figuring out a way to feed ourselves sustainably has to be at the top of our agenda. British Columbia is well positioned to be a leader in local food production and food security. Even in the Koote-

McHappy Day

nays, where Bill Bennett says we only grow hay, there is a blossoming local food culture. Small businesses are being started all over this region as we take advantage of the agricultural opportunities we have here. But access to land is very often a struggle, and if Bill Bennett gets his way, there will be even less agricultural land in the Kootenays. This is why we are proposing a different solution. We have put forward the BC Local Food Act, which will actually increase food security, improve health outcomes and fuel local economic activity. The BC Local Food Act would require government purchasing of locally grown food, would reintroduce the very successful Buy BC program and

would mandate a legislative committee on food and agriculture. This committee would establish a plan to increase local food production, marketing and processing. It would set specific, measurable targets for progress, and it would develop the policies that would need to be adopted by government to ensure success. We need to focus on making it possible for people to farm successfully. We need to build capacity for food processing and storage, and protect the valuable public asset that is the Agricultural Land Reserve. The BC Local Food Act is an example of agriculture policy that actually makes life better for British Columbians; a stark contrast to the BC Liberals and Bill 24.

Community coming together to support Rowland, Kerstin and their baby With his fiance expecting, Rowland Bell contends with rare, crippling disorder that attacks his brain Alex Cooper

editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

For Rowland Bell and Kerstin Byman, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Recently engaged, and with a baby on the way, they should have been like so many other young couples in Revelstoke. This was to be the happiest time in their lives. Instead, Bell has been hospitalized for more than three months, with a very uncertain future that will almost certainly require permanent care. Byman, who has been with Bell in the hospital for the past three months, wrote the Times Review an e-mail explaining what Bell has been going through, in hopes of educating people on this rare syndrome. With so many people wanting to understand this very rare disorder and how it is affecting Bell, Byman wrote she wanted to shed light on the Bell’s condition, “and to go gather more people sending Bell positive, healing thoughts.” Bell has paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE), a rare auto-immune disorder where the immune system creates antibodies that attack cells in part of his brain. His ordeal began in April 2013, when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The tumour was discovered very early and removed, and they were confident no further treatment was required. This January, Bell started experiencing extreme fatigue, sleeping upwards 20 hours per day. Tests showed low sodium, low testosterone level and low levels of luteinizing hormone, which together offered the first clue to a diagnosis. There were fears he had a tumour on his pituitary gland, but none was found and doctors didn’t know what to make of his symptoms. On Feb. 7, Bell woke up with chest pains. He went to Queen Victoria Hospital and then was

transported to Kelowna General Hospital, where after many tests, he was diagnosed with PLE. As Byman explains, what is essentially happening is that Bell’s immune system is working to attack cancer cells, but is actually attacking the limbic part of his brain. In the absence of cancer cells the immune system has targeted his brain as the cells appear similar to cancer cells. The limbic area of the brain controls functions such as memory, learning and emotion. Strangely, no re-occuring cancer has been in found in Bell, which actually makes his condition much more difficult to treat. Doctors have said there only 11 other cases similar to his reported in North America, and in two of those cases the problems came after cancer, like Bell. According to the Encephalitis Society, PLE is best treated by treating the cancer. The absence of cancer in Bell had doctors unsure of how to proceed. Several specialists throughout North America were contacted who have all suggested a treat-

ment that involves suppressing Bell’s immune system. After three months in hospital he has had two different types of chemotherapy drugs, highdose steroids and other immunosuppresants. He’s had reactions to the drugs, stints in the intensive care unit, infections, fluid build up in his lungs and more. Throughout this Bell remains positive, says Byman. “Doctors are not optimistic of a recovery, but those who know Bell know that he is strong and extremely positive, something the family feels always helps,” writes Byman. “Even though Bell has been through a lot... he still maintains his gentle, polite, friendly soul, thanking every nurse and doctor that comes in even if they have just performed some uncomfortable test on him.” Bell’s disabilities include double vision, delirium, hallucinations, memory loss, seizures, tremors, loss of balance, loss of mobility, loss of speech and fatigue. ‘A Bit of Everything’ showcases artistic talents of local students MELISSA JAMESON

Special to the Times Review

For the second year in a row the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre is filled with works by local youth. Titled A Bit of Everything, the show features around 170 pieces of art by more than 50 Revelstoke Secondary School students in grades nine through 12. Works include both twodimensional and three-dimensional pieces in various mediums including pencil, acrylic paint, sharpie, photography, collage, digital manipulation, plasticine and clay. This year the exhibit is a little different, with student work displayed throughout the main and side galleries. Theresa Browning, head of the art department at RSS explained that students whose work is featured in the side galleries had to go through the application process with the RVAS, the same as any other artist would. "In order to have their work featured in the side gallery, students had to complete a mini exhibit of three pieces to show they were able to produce quality work," said Browning. In total, nine students currently have work featured in the side galleries. Hannah Yauck and Ainslee Arthurs are two of the nine students who completed the application process to have their art displayed there. The experience was slightly different for each of the girls. Yauck, a grade 12 student, described the application experience as being "a little nerve racking." She works with clay, and says she chose to display pieces she was passionate about. Turns out art is

Government of British Columbia and Xplornet Partner to Bring Affordable High-Speed to Remote B.C. Residents. Xplornet Communications Inc. is pleased to announce a partnership with the government of British Columbia to help bridge the urban/rural digital divide in rural and remote British Columbia. The initiative is a multi-year program to make Internet connectivity more affordable in rural and remote areas where installation costs can be high.

The program will provide a subsidy of up to $250, or half of the cost of an installation of broadband equipment to new residential and business customers within Xplornet’s industry leading 4G rural broadband satellite footprint. This will significantly reduce the costs of installation, costs that may have been a barrier to the adoption of high-speed Internet. “The government of British Columbia deserves significant praise for a program that helps break down one of the last barriers to full connectivity in the province – namely the high cost of broadband installation in remote parts of BC. Now, even the most remote British Columbians can affordably benefit from the transformative power of high-speed Internet to connect them to the global economy,” said Xplornet President Allison Lenehan. Xplornet is the country’s leading rural broadband Internet provider and takes pride in connecting over 200,000 Canadians to the world. The commitment to offering every Canadian reliable, affordable and fast Internet is shared by an ever-expanding network of over 450 local dealers, including 60 in British Columbia alone. also in her future — although she plans to make a stop off at SAIT first to study business before focusing on ceramics at Selkirk College. For Arthurs, also in Grade 12, the added pressure of having to apply to have her work featured in one of side galleries was a welcome challenge. "It was cool," said Arthurs. "It made you work harder. I think it was good you had to apply." Arthurs, who works mainly with

acrylics, says while many of her pieces were complete before the show, she did complete some pieces specifically for the exhibit. While she has no plans to major in art, Arthurs says she definitely sees herself taking a few painting classes in the future. The Revelstoke Visual Art Centre's Jackie Pendergast said she was amazed by the work featured. "There's wonderful work on the walls," she said at the exhibit

opening this past Friday. "It's just fabulous to see young talent knowing these are the artists of the future." RSS principal Greg Kenyon also spoke highly about the qualify of student work, giving praise to Browning for her efforts. "Theresa is a wonderful art teacher who has created incredible relationships with these students." A Bit of Everything can be seen at the Revelstoke Visual Art Centre until June 6.

about a 40 point lead, but the visitors slowly chipped away at the lead. The game came down to the final few jams. In what should have been the final jam, the Wreckers got within 12 points,. However, a replay was called after the referees determined an improper penalty was called in the final jam. That gave Kamloops a second chance at the win. Benjamin Menzies plays Beethoven (aka Schroeder) and Jordan Walsh is CB (aka Charlie Brown) in the Revelstoke Theatre Company’s production of Dog Sees God. Alex Cooper/Revelstoke

Play Dog Sees God gives gripping portrayal of teenage struggles Alex Cooper

editor@revelstoketimesreview.com

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, the new play by the Revelstoke Theatre Company, comes with a disclaimer for frequent coarse language and mature subject matter. Having seen the first act of the two-act play, I can say the warning is warranted, but it's no worse than modern Hollywood teen comedies like American Pie and Super Bad. The play, written by Bert Royal, is an "unauthorized parody" that shows the characters from Charles Schultz's Peanuts comic strip as teenagers. They smoke cigarettes and marijuana, they drink, they pepper their language with expletives and they talk about sex and explore their sexuality. The play opens with Charlie Brown (Jordan Walsh) and his sister Sally (Felicia Van Leur) – I mean CB and his unnamed sister – holding a funeral for his dead beagle (possibly Snoopy), who contracted rabies, went mad, killed a little yellow bird (possibly Woodstock), and tried to bite CB. As a result, he was put down. At the funeral, CB's sister makes fun of him for holding a funeral for his dog, and inviting his friends to it. "He was a dog, Charles. They shit on the ground and lick themselves. Ceremony is probably not key here," she yells at him. "He was a *beep* dog. "Well he was my *beep* dog," retorts

CB. "So *beep* you." That's the type of language you can expect in Dog Sees God. The subject matter is even darker. In this new world, CB wears his familiar yellow t-shirt with the jagged black line at the bottom. His sister is a chameleon, changing identities from day-to-day. In the opening scene, she's dressed like the "bride of Frankenstein," to quote CB, and later she looks like Barbie. Justin Smith plays Van (aka Linus) in the play, a pothead who's dabbling in Buddhism. We learn that CB recently burned Van's treasured blanket. In turn, Linus took the ashes and smoked them in a joint — a stunt that would make Keith Richards proud. Christopher Fusick plays Matt, aka Pig Pen. He's vulgar, obsessed with sex and is now a germaphobe. Beethoven, aka Schroeder is played by Benjamin Menzies. He's still a piano prodigy, but his troubled youth (his dad is in jail for a disturbing crime) has turned him into a recluse, tormented and bullied by his classmates, who accuse him of being gay. Tricia (aka Peppermint Patty) is played by Hailey Christie-Hoyle. She is the school slut - a dim-witted, consommate bitch who is as crude as Matt, and mercilessly makes fun of a fatter classmate. Her sidekick is Marcy (aka Marcie), played by Danielle Foisy. The two have great fun together in a scene where they spike their milk contain-

ers with booze and get drunk. Also joining the cast is Ana Pollo as Van's sister, aka Lucy. Throughout all this, CB mourns his dog and ponders life and death. The first act culminates in a powerful scene where Linus opens up to CB about how he's treated and the two have a bonding moment. In the second act, which I haven't seen, everything comes to a head at a party at Marcie's house. According to a plot synopsis, the play delves into even darker areas. Dog Sees God was written by Bert Royal. It's been performed to acclaim in major cities around the world and won the Excellence Award for the Best Overall Production at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival. Martin Ralph, who directed the play along with Anna Fin and Darren McKay, chose the controversial script after being shown it by McKay. Ralph called it, "Remarkably honest, jaw-droppingly shocking and yet wonderful and masterfully written," he said. "Unapologetic, raw, funny, harsh, unbridled, passionate, affectionate, confused and real." Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead is being performed at McGregor's in the Powder Springs Hotel on May 16, 17, 20, 21, 22 and 23. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Powder Springs, or online at www.revelstoketheatrecompany.org.

Trust fund set up to support Bell and Byman’s son Rowland Bell, from page 7 have recommended Bell be placed in a long-term care facility, but Byman is hoping he can live at home, even if it means modifying their home and having live-in support. The Byman and Bell families have faith that Bell will have some level of recovery and be able to help raise their son. They

thank those that have shown them so much support and it helps them so much to know how many people have sent well wishes and positive healing vibes, writes Byman. As is so often the case in Revelstoke, family and friends are rallying to support the couple in their time of need. Brenda Demone and Connie McKnight established a trust account to aid in supporting the future needs of the baby boy Byman is

expecting in early June. To help out, donations can be made at TD Canada Trust by depositing money into account 6269011. A Facebook page with more information called With love for Kerstin Byman and baby boy Bell has been set up. The family will be updating the Facebook page with information and photos.
