become stiff, tender and very sore. It affects the muscles of the neck, shoulders, lower back, hips and thighs. Sometimes people also get a slight fever and night sweats. A person may lose his or her appetite and be anemic and pale. Depression is also common in people who have this condition. The cause of polymyalgia rheumatica is not known. However, possibilities include immune system abnormalities and genetic factors. The fact that polymyalgia rheumatica is rare in people under the age of 50 suggests it may be linked to the aging process. Women develop it more often than men. It most often appears in women over the age of 50. A condition associated with polymyalgia rheumatica is called giant cell arteritis. It sometimes occurs in people who have polymyalgia rheumatica, as well as to those without it. With giant cell arteritis, there can be headaches and changes in the eyes. The head feels tender to touch or painful when pressed on. There can be changes in vision such as blurred vision, blind spots or seeing double. Any changes in the eyes should be brought to attention to your physician, as sometimes it leads to blindness or other complications. Usually a specialist rheumatologist will give a treatment plan for polymyalgia rheumatica, which may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen that help reduce pain and swelling and decrease stiffness. Oral cortisone may also be prescribed. Exercise may help reduce pain and will keep muscles from becoming weak. However, it is important to strike a balance between too much activity, which can strain painful muscles, and too little activity, which can increase pain, stiffness, and lead to further weakness. Polymyalgia rheumatica usually goes away of its own accord, but it is not possible to predict how long the disease will last in any person.
This is for general information only and not a substitute for medical advice. No action/treatment or inaction/non treatment should be taken without consulting your physician. Readers should consult appropriate health professionals on any matter relating to their health and well-being.

familychiropractic COURTESY OF HARBOURFRONT FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC
by Dr. Warren Gage Infants, children, subluxation?
Chiropractic care for infants and children is a safe and effective way to ensure they grow up as healthy and strong as possible. But how does chiropractic work? Chiropractic care is based on a few simple truths. The body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. The central nervous system located inside the spine is the master controller of the entire body. Every cell, tissue, and organ is directly controlled by the nervous system. Newborns frequently experience stress and trauma such as constraint during pregnancy, long or very fast labour, or complications during the birthing process (forceps, vacuum, or cesarian delivery); which can all place a substantial amount of pull and pressure on an infant’s neck and spine. Toddlers and youngsters also experience countless falls, bumps and bruises on a daily basis. These stresses on infants and children frequently cause spinal and cranial distortions that chiropractors refer to as “subluxation.” Many subluxations are silent and do not cause any visible symptoms. Other times, the stress on the nervous system can result in obvious problems such as colic, constipation, irritability, sleeping disorders, digestion issues, inability to latch on and breastfeed comfortably, behaviour problems, ear infections, developmental delays, and torticollis, to name a few. Pediatric chiropractors locate and correct a child’s subluxations through craniosacral therapy and gentle spinal adjustments with an
intent to restore proper functioning of the nervous system. The amount of pressure used to adjust a child or infant is about the amount of force one would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Infants often times will continue to sleep right through their chiropractic adjustments. While chiropractic is not a treatment or cure for specific symptoms or ailments, our focus is to ensure the nervous system is free of interference. This, in turn, promotes “optimal” health and gives your child the greatest opportunity to clearly process their environment. Reduction of pain, discomfort, and symptoms is a bonus for children under chiropractic care. Common reasons parents take their children to see a chiropractor: To encourage proper brain and nerve development. To support overall health and wellbeing. To strengthen immunity. To help alleviate colic, digestive troubles, breathing difficulties, allergies, asthma & bed-wetting. To encourage comfortable breastfeeding/bonding between mother and child. To assist with proper spinal alignment and posture. To help improve behavioural issues and ability to concentrate. To relieve constipation. Give your child a jump-start on life with a nervous system free and clear of interference. Have their spine and nervous system checked for subluxation by a chiropractor at Harbourfront Family Chiropractic. Results vary from patient to patient.
Free paint, electronics, and tire drop off
www.lakeshorenews.bc.ca
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is holding its annual one-day Round Up on Saturday, April 13th in Sicamous. “This is really a great opportunity to get rid of items that can’t go to the landfill or transfer station such as paint, pesticides, tires and electronics,” says CSRD Waste Reduction Facilitator Carmen Fennell. Household products being accepted at the Round Up include: all bulbs (including fluorescent tubes and spiral bulbs), light fixtures, paint, pesticides with a registration number and skull and crossbones, flammable liquids, small appli-
ances, power tools, tires and electronics. “There are so many items that pose a potential hazard to human health, such as the mercury contained in fluorescent bulbs, and so many items that can’t be regularly disposed of in Sicamous. This way they can be disposed of safely,” says Fennell. In BC, these products are part of an Extended Producer Responsibility Program managed by Stewardship agencies. The CSRD has partnered with these agencies to offer residents this opportunity because many of these materials are prohibited from the landfill and there is no regular disposal option locally.
“There is no regular depot for items such as electronics and small appliances in Sicamous so we’re pleased to offer this yearly event for the convenience of the residents. This year the Tire Stewardship crew will be on hand so it’s a great opportunity for residents to bring in their old tires.” The Round Up takes place on April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Sicamous arena parking lot. For more information and for a complete list of acceptable items go to www. csrd.bc.ca or phone 1-888-248-2773 ext. 5950.

Technology works wonders
Language Pathologist Julie Lewis administers the Tympanometer on Sean Davis. Mother Liz can take comfort in the knowledge that this painless, magical device, can immediately detect any hearing issues that could impair the child’s ability to speak and learn. In turn the Pediatric Audiologist can then prescribe Intervention remedies that can help to correct problems quickly. This unit is now available for Shuswap patients as a result of the generosity of donors to the Foundation. Senior Pathologist Christina El Gazzar expressed her appreciation for the positive impact this equipment is having in caring for young children with learning disabilities.

ONE-ON-ONE TIME WITH GRANDCHILDREN
SOCIETIES BENEFIT FROM THEIR OWN BYLAWS
Sue Kershaw has an uncommon interest: she enjoys writing bylaws specific to a society which go beyond the provincial government’s sample Schedule B. Sue took part in the writing of bylaws for Vernon Community Singers, and then used them as a basis for the Vernon Jazz Society. When she moved to Canoe, she helped draft bylaws for Salmon Arm Citizens’ Patrol, then the Canoe Boat Club, and most recently for the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society (Roots & Blues). Sue says specific bylaws provide several benefits: a good way for an organization to both examine and define its organization and rules; useful when trying to enlist new board members; and they provide continuity and consistency over the years as board members change. “Bylaws are not cast in stone,” according to Sue. “They are a living document and should evolve along with the society.” She says: “I LOVE the how’s and why’s of things, and I like analyzing and synthesizing systems.” She works at her computer in the office she shares with her husband, Hugh Chalmers, in their Canoe home.
APPOINT A BC NOTARY AS YOUR EXECUTOR
Last week I asked if there was someone who would be willing to be named as executor in a senior’s will and the first response came quickly. Two notaries public are available: Phyllis Simon and Zoe Stevens. Phyllis wrote: “While not all BC Notaries choose to do this type of work, many of us do. The advantage of appointing a BC Notary is that their work is covered by 10-million dollars of errors and omissions insurance. Zoe or myself are often willing to be appointed as an executor which means the client has hired a trusted professional who is not only experienced but insured.” Contact them at Zoe Stevens Notary Corp., info@zoestevens.ca. The number in Vernon is (250) 542-1111 and in Salmon Arm it is (250) 803-8883.
A highlight when I visit Victoria is to take each grandchild out for a treat, and have a one-on-one visit with Baba. They choose the restaurant and their treat. For me, it is a highlight of the trip. Recently, two grandchildren visited Salmon Arm. While their dad, my son-number-two, continued emptying and cleaning grandpa’s house, the children took turns going out with me. Twelve-year-old Jazmin chose Pink Cherry, where she had cake and pop. While on Hudson Avenue, we visited The Lake Effect gift store, Lady in the Tub Bed & Bath Boutique and Candy Vault. Ten-year-old Zenon chose Tim Hortons where he had a long john, a donut and hot chocolate. We enjoyed a visit to Candy Vault, and then we did the guy thing and went to Westside Stores in Centenoka. He was intrigued by all the bows and arrows. Every once in a while I check with the grandchildren and say I’m not good at remembering special events and I give them a choice: do they want to receive a birthday card and gift, Easter card, Christmas card, etc., or do they want a one-on-one with me? All five choose the latter, enthusiastically.
JOIN SHUSWAP SINGLES & FRIENDS
A small group of singles who are now seniors belong to Shuswap Singles & Friends. One of them was at the first meeting that was called by this writer in 1976. It was called Parents Without Partners and held in a school classroom. Eighteen adults attended. As I suggested at the first and only meeting I attended in that era, the club has no executive and no bank account. It costs $10 to join, and $2 per meeting to cover rent. Meetings are usually held at the bowling alley, and once every few months they have a pot-luck supper at the Seniors’ Drop-In Centre on Hudson Ave. Unmarried couples are welcome. They go to dances, play cards and games. They talk about DriveAble. The club has 12 members, and welcomes visitors and new members. Contact Sandra at 250-832-4834 or sandman49@ shaw.ca.
WALK ABOUT YOUR HOME TO PREVENT ALZHEIMERS
Do not sit in your chair all day and watch TV. If you didn’t take the six Thursday-morning Brain Fitness course at 5th Avenue Seniors’ Centre, you missed a good program. I took it in the fall. Exercise could prevent one in seven cases of Alzheimers according to a study reported by CBC-TV. But you don’t have to go to a gym or walk outside. Just walking in your house
during the day will be sufficient. Go back and forth from your chair to the kitchen or bathroom every hour or two and it will count as exercise.
ALBERTA SENIORS ANGRY OVER DRIVEABLE
On Saturday I watched television news on a Calgary station and it showed seniors with placards in Red Deer, angry about the testing of seniors to obtain their driving skills. They objected to possibly losing their licence. The creator of DriveAble said the testing is accurate and fair. Developed over six years at the University of Alberta, he said it is used across Canada, the United States and internationally. The intent of the testing is to keep unsafe drivers off the road. It is the doctor’s decision in the end.

If you have been living common-law for more than two years, you are now considered married. The status changed in B.C. on March 18. Now you have all the benefits of a married couple. Plan a party and expect to receive gifts.
HOCKEY TOURISM WITH SILVERBACKS
A woman ahead of me at the ticket booth in Shaw Centre used two U.S. 20s to buy two tickets for Tuesday night’s hockey game. I asked where she was from and she said Anchorage, Alaska. She flew to Kelowna for the game, and her husband flew to Seattle, rented a car and drove up. Their son, Bryan Sinz, plays for the Penticton Vees, the top team in the interior BCHL conference. They saw his team beat the Silverbacks 5-1.
HAPPINESS IS SEEING EQUIPMENT AT WORK
The SmartCentres’ site is a beehive of activity with a number of excavators at work, like the one lifting material from a flat-deck to build a bridge. Excavators farther back are preparing the base for the first store which is expected to open by year-end. sallys1@telus.net • 250-832-4831 The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of Sally Scales and do not necessarily represent those of Lakeshore News and its staff.
LettersWhatto the Editor is ‘progress’ exactly?
RE: Sidewalk Superintendent March 15, 2013 ‘Now Salmon Arm can move ahead’ Sally’s enthusiastic paean to the SmartCentres’ startup and impending gerbil-in-the-wheel consumerism neatly captures our crass and shallow ‘shop-til-you-drop’ culture. One upon a time, songstress Peggy Lee soulfully wondered about it all when she crooned, ‘Is that all there is? Is that all there is?”....One does wonder!

I recall passing through the university’s majestic stone archway and pondering its motto, chiseled into the stone, reading “Progress – Forward!” This led to lighthearted queries later among conference-goers as to what is progress? And what direction is ‘forward’? Which, among much-spirited debate, were also

BC Hydro won’t change unless mandated by gov’t
Re: Sidewalk Superintendent, March 8, 2013, “I had a very high electricity bill” Dear Sally, Let me save you a hike to your Hydro meter: Look at your Hydro bill. Consumers now pay two prices for electricity. For the same billing period that put you into shock (and many, many bewildered folks) my home was charged what was the regular price for about one-third of the electricity used. To my horror I paid double the regular rate for the majority (the remaining two-thirds) of the total power used for two months. In dollars my last Hydro bill was $500 on the new two-tier pricing system. The same amount of electricity would have cost me $300 under the previous pricing. I paid $200 more. That is a price increase of 40% for electricity, an enormous financial burden to add to the ordinary household in this
Planned water outage
The City of Enderby is advising residents that there will be a planned interruption to water service for residents living on Johnston Avenue, Ridgewood Road, Peacher Crescent, Revel Crescent, Red Rock Crescent, Reservoir Road, and that part of Lawes Street off of Reservoir Road. The outage will be on Monday, March 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for scheduled work to the distribution system. The City of Enderby thanks residents for their patience during this interruption. For more information, please contact the City of Enderby at 250-838-7230.
climate. Who are you going to call? Not BC Hydro. Save your breath to cool your coffee. We don’t need to hear about price restructuring to encourage conservation. Hydro’s measly allotment of electricity at an affordable rate couldn’t run a crate-sized condo in balmy Vancouver, much less a house here in winter. The higher rates will bankrupt families. And businesses! They can only cope by passing their costs onto consumers or go out of business. BC Hydro will see electricity conservation all right, as families move from this province, and businesses are forced to close. High energy prices kill healthy economies quicker than high taxes. Don’t blame the Smart meters. Or dumb estimates or the old meters. Ignore the meters, they are a huge red herring in regard to pricing. It’s simple. Consumers have been hit with an enormous price increase on the sly. I seem to recall BC Hydro asking the government for permission to increase electricity prices by 15%. This was necessary to offset costs incurred by government contracts to purchase expensive electricity from private power producers. I seem to recall the premier crowing about reducing the increase because most families couldn’t afford greater household expenses. What happened? At this point I don’t want an explanation. I only know nobody wants to take responsibility for charging me 40% more for electricity. My answer to BC Hydro electricity rate shock is this: Don’t change your light bulbs. Change the government that created this mess. Cathie Price, Armstrong
New logo for Sorrento arts society
Attention members of The Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts Society. As the new President of the Society I’m looking for ways to increase our visibility and profile in the community. To that end the board has decided to launch a competition to design a new Logo for the Society and the Festival. We have applied for a grant from BC Creative Spaces to build and erect an 8 x 12 foot permanent highway sign at or near the Sorrento Memorial Hall. The new logo will be an integral part of that sign. The winner of the competition will receive $200 for their efforts. When designing your logo, please consider the following: can it represent the diversity of art in the Festival or only a single medium? Is it instantly recognizable as artistic or creative?
Note that it will be used on letterhead, website, brochures etc. as well as the sign. Our membership is incredibly talented and creative so put those things together and give the Society and Festival a new look and image. Please give your submissions to either myself, Jenette Andereasen, Kirsten Chapman, Carol Warkentin, Inge Maier or Wenndee Quinn. You may also email to Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts (slfa2003@hotmail.com) with an attachment of your logo design. All entries should be in by May 31, 2013. Thanking all in advance for your effort and participation. Good luck. Larry Bell, President, Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts Society

Rink Rats – season one
This past week Salmon Arm had the privilege of hosting the Pee Wee Tier 2 provincial hockey championships. The momentous task of hosting such an event falls on the shoulders of some amazing volunteers so kudos to them. In the chaos of organizing these tournaments, there is a group of people that often get forgotten. No it’s not the Moms. It’s not even the Zamboni driver. Instead, it’s the little brother/ sister. You see them at every turn. Maybe you see them hovering around a vending machine. Perhaps they are stalking the concession waiting for a rogue french fry to be left on the counter. Maybe you’ve tripped over them or been slashed in the shin as they play ball hockey in the lobby. These little ones spend most of their winter weekends exploring every inch of the arenas frequented by their older siblings; and I mean every inch. I wouldn’t be surprised if my youngest son has a detailed blueprint in his head of every arena in the province. With three older brothers and him in hockey, there haven’t been too many rinks he hasn’t explored. The poor kid could write his own hockey concession food guide! For all the reality TV shows out there, the one they should make is “Rink Rats – A Sibling’s Perspective.” Strap a headcam on one of these kids and simply let them loose in your local hockey rink. Now that would sure be a hit–we might even find out what parents are really saying about the coaches! It seems episode one could easily have been filmed this last week at provincials. My co-worker Marianne came to watch one of my older son’s games. As they walked in they heard, “Hey! I know you!” coming from underneath one of the tables of the arena lobby. They looked underneath the table to find my youngest, Nate, with his two buddies (twins) sitting on the floor eating french fries. I guess they managed to coerce a couple dollars out of the twins’ Grandma and invaded the concession. I’m not sure how much of their brother’s hockey they actually watch, but they probably do know the exact maintenance schedule of the Zamboni driver and whether the concession is out of ketchup chips. So forget Duck Dynasty and Gold Rush Alaska–I’d watch “Rink Rats” any day!
Yard waste event
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is holding its annual six-week organic and metal waste disposal event at CSRD landfills and transfer stations from Saturday, April 13 to Saturday, May 25 during regular hours of operation. With the free metal event, residents can drop off items such as stoves, hot water tanks, washers and dryers, metal doors and siding, all free of charge. The organic material includes basic yard waste from residential properties including leaves, pruning, weeds, and tree limbs up to 8” in diameter. “There is a $15 charge on items requiring the removal of ozone depleting substances,” says CSRD Waste Reduction Facilitator Carmen
Fennell. “The Regional District pays a contractor to remove Freon from fridges, air conditioners, freezers and water coolers and this $15 charge pays for that cost.” The events take place at all CSRD landfill and transfer sites for six weeks with the exception of Trout Lake and Seymour Arm. Trout Lake residents may bring their organics and metal on May 5, 12, and 19, while the Seymour Arm event takes place May 18-20 during regular hours of operation. For a complete list of acceptable materials for the free disposal event and other upcoming disposal events, please visit the CSRD website: www. csrd.bc.ca
You already know your pet is a star - now you can make sure everyone else knows it, too. The BC SPCA announces the 2013 Animal Lovers’ calendar contest, a chance for your furry friend to win one of 12 coveted spots in the non-profit society’s popular annual calendar. “We all know that our pets are beautiful and the Animal Lovers’ calendar contest is an opportunity to show them off while helping B.C.’s most vulnerable, at-risk animals at the same time,” says Lorie Chortyk, the society’s general manager of community relations. It only costs $10 to enter the contest, and registration is fun and easy. Between March 20 and April 19, guardians simply visit spca.bc.ca/calendarcontest and follow the online process. They will be guided through a series of steps to upload a photo, tell a heartwarming story about their pet and customize a contest webpage where other visitors can vote for their
pet. Each vote costs $1, and visitors can vote as often as they like for their favourite animal. “People can easily multiply their votes by asking friends and family members to vote for their pet, and they’re encouraged to promote their pet even further through social media avenues like Facebook and Twitter.” Once a pet goes viral, says Chortyk, there’s no limit to the number of votes that could be cast. The 12 animals with the most votes at noon on April 19 will win a coveted spot in the calendar. An additional 10 animals judged to have the most compelling stories and photos will each win a special BC SPCA goody bag with items from the Shop BC SPCA online store. To register and for a complete list of rules and prizes, visit spca.bc.ca/ calendarcontest. The Animal Lovers’ Calendar is given as a gift to supporters every year, and will also available for sale at branches and online in September.

Unidentified flying object
By Karen Beggs I was walking down to my haystack to bring up some bales of hay for my horses on March 16th. It was 9:30 in the morning and the temperature was around 2 degrees. I have a very tall Douglas fir standing just inside the horse pasture. From there the land slopes down to a boggy area, where some ancient cottonwoods stand. I saw what I thought was a bird launch itself from high in the fir tree, and head down towards the poplars at a leisurely pace. As any birdwatcher knows, the brain immediately rushes through all the identifying features, and comes up with species without much conscious thought. Well, it was different this time. My brain must have been scrolling through its knowledge as the unidentified flying object extended its wings. It was when it tipped side to side and glided gracefully down into the poplar trees that my brain finally found what it was searching for. It was a Northern Flying Squirrel, not a bird after all. I have had a population of flying squirrels on my property for over thirty years, but I have never actually seen one ‘fly’ before. Of course they don’t really fly in the usual manner, but rather, spread out a membrane of skin and glide from a high elevation such as a tall tree, losing height as they go. I have never seen one in full daylight before, but I do recall an incident about

twenty years ago when I saw a female flying squirrel on a branch of one of my cedar trees. It was early in the morning, and she was holding something in her mouth. I moved under the tree to get a better look. I was standing right under her branch looking up at her, and saw that she was carrying a baby squirrel, firmly held by the scruff of its neck. She glanced down at me, carefully urinated on me, then hurried off with the baby in her mouth. Something must have disturbed her original nesting place, and she was moving her family to a new and safer home. I moved further away to make sure that I didn’t disturb her, and watched her return twice more to carry off two more babies. Throughout the years that I was operating my wildlife rehabilitation centre, I raised several orphaned flying squirrels. They are the most delightful creatures with their large dark eyes, so well suited to their nocturnal life. Their fur is incredibly soft compared to our regular red squirrel, and their temperament is much less excitable. As they are nocturnal, many people are not aware of their existence in this area, but judging by the number of orphans I have raised, there seems to be a healthy population. I was pleased to see that I still have some on my property.

Now, more than 20 artists have joined; and with the support of the Enderby Arts Council, they are painting, decorating and preparing this new space at 907 Belvedere Street, which will be named “Courtyard Gallery.” This will be an artist-operated gallery for local artists to exhibit and sell their work while promoting fine arts in the communities of Enderby and
District. They will be reaching out to the community with workshops and adding a revitalized quality to the downtown core. This will become a destination and the community will share in its success. Although the doors of the gallery will open in early April, an official opening is planned for Thursday, April 25 during B.C. Arts and Culture Week. The Courtyard Gallery is located at 907 Belvedere Street, Enderby. For more information please contact Tatianna O’Donnell, Chair of the Enderby Artists’ Initiative, at tatianna@tatiannaodonnell.com.

New products for the hunter and angler shuswapoutdoors
Many of our habits, mannerisms, and traits, were formed by our parents nurturing us as children. It could be schooling, (our teachers), household duties, table manners, (Dad always said grace for us at the table, and wo betide ‘ya, if you didn’t wash up before sittin’ down), right from wrong, and discipline. Most of us can recall the trip to the woodshed, followed by an application of the hair brush or kindling stick. After that, came the love and affection only a caring Mom or Dad can give. I have always been fascinated by people’s traits; watching them, wondering about their lifestyle, habits. This, I suppose, comes from having a variety of occupations over time. I’m sure many of you feel the same way about neighbours, friends, hunting and fishing folks. How things and times have changed! On a recent trip to Edmonton, and sitting in the foyer/lounge at the Kelowna airport, I could see literally dozens of folks, even kids, with their heads drooped, on Blackberries/ smartphones/iPads, texting away. It’s an electronic world out there. On the outdoors front in all this, and caught up in the whirlwind of activity, in the science of animals, fish, and birds; scientists, biologists, and technicians in game departments are using microchips, collars, critter cams, and GPS’s to track, follow, and study population densities, and movement. In the adventurous hiking, snowmobiling, and alpine skiing department, tiny devices now save lives in the back country. Not to be outdone are the manufacturers of outdoor gear, fishing tackle, optics, and lures. So, as hunters and anglers that started out as children guided and nurtured by a grandpa, uncle or dad using basic plugs/lures/flies/gear; we’ve come full circle. Here then, is what’s new–and the list is endless. Quads: New models include the Arctic Cat 425i MSPR - nice machine; the Honda TRX 500FM; and the Suzuki King Quad 400. All Suzuki’s quads now have electronic fuel injection. Fishing: Williams has its W-50 classic. Bully. Has new 3-D-eye.
www.Williams.ca. Acme lures has put out Little Cleo. www.acmetackle.com. Maxima’s Ultragreen leader material. http://www.brecksinc. com. Sufix puts out Invisiline. As well as 832 superline. Rifles: Remington has a new model– 700 XCR II. Check it out at www.remington.com. Clothing: the best camo pattern, by Sitka – Optifade. They also have a broad range of other forest designs. www. sitkagear.com. There are many more products out there, that we see as we thumb though our outdoor magazines. On the water, information on the newest in outboard motors is readily available. For the many of us fishermen and gals who are now using electric trolling motors, the computer/electronic age has caught up there too! It’s a cute story. It was in 1914 in Fargo North Dakota, when O. G. Schmidt connected a shaft/propeller to a Ford model-A starter motor. He kept working on this model, and today, they have the Minn Kota. Others copied, with steady improvements to the fisherman’s silent friend. We now have electric motors with foot controls, and wireless remote. Builtin sonar transducers give a view of the bottom, while autopilot on some models are programmed to follow a shelf or weed bed. A GPS anchor can be let down to hold the boat in position despite the wind/current conditions. This puts you on a hot bite. Some of us ol’ Duffer’s are reluctant to change, occasionally thinking back to our childhood and fishin’ with Dad, with the ruby-eyed spoon, Canadian wiggler, Helen flatfish with the gang hook set-up; even the willowleaf and worm, or wedding ring and worm. Many of us still have a tackle box full of these lures and the memories of past great fishing trips and times that go with them. Now we don’t have to think smarter, or fish longer – we’ll just keep up with the times, darn it!
Here and there in the bird world
There’s beginning to be a silence in our small part of the world, and it’s about birds. There just doesn’t seem like we have a variety anymore. No doubt there is a multitude of reasons, but some little ones in particular, are having a tough time. Everyone loves owls; from the tiny boreal species, to Saw-Whet or Barn Owls. Climate change with heavy snows this past winter have driven our residents to warmer climes as far away as Minnesota. Lack of small rodents like mice and voles, have left sick and dying owls along roadside ditches and rescue shelters. Bigger owls, too, like Barred and Snowy Owls, have been seen in New England. Great Grey Owls have come down into southern Ontario/ Quebec. Of the small species, the older birds do better as they learn to hunt; while younger birds fend around woodpiles and bird feeders at night, after mice, only to slowly starve. Ornithologists call it an irruption or cyclical phenomenon for lack of a better term. Any way we define it, it’s a changing world out there not just going to the birds! From the Vancouver Sun, Thurs. Mar. 14. Smile, it’ll make your world a better place!

SOBC Salmon Arm is very happy to announce the start of their Club Fit - Essentials program. This program consists of fun activities and exercises designed to improve conditioning and strength. It also has a nutritional information and mental training component. The program will run every Monday starting April 8 until June 10 (except May 20) from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. at South Broadview School. The Club Fit program is limited to individuals 14 years old and older with an intellectual disability. There is no charge to register for this program. Please register in advance of the start date by contacting Heather Sims at relayradials@hotmail.com. Even if your child is younger than 14 years please contact Heather to register your interest. SOBC has programs for children as young as 2 years that could be initiated here if there is sufficient interest and appropriate instructors are available. The organizers are hoping to use this initial program to get to know all of this area’s potential SOBC athletes and their families, and to get their feedback on events they may be interested in training for in the upcoming season. It is also a great chance to learn about SOBC and all that it has to offer for the intellectually disabled. If you have any interest in participating as an athlete, coach, or volunteer please contact Heather Sims or come out to the initial program start on April 8 and check out this very worthwhile and rewarding program.

Frank William Tams “Bill” October 5, 1928 – March 12, 2013
Bill passed away peacefully at his home on Shuswap Lake with his wife Shirley and his family at his side. An Avid fisherman and outdoorsman, Bill spent many enjoyable hours fishing and hunting with his sons and friends on Shuswap Lake and at the Coast. He could often be seen sitting at the end of the dock at his home enjoying his morning coffee and watching the sunrise. Dad said, “I love to be on the water, I never tire of it.” Bill spent his working life with BC Telephone and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He really enjoyed his long retirement, spending many years travelling with Shirley. Most summer weekends would find him surrounded by his extended family enjoying barbeques with the wine flowing. There are lots of good times to remember. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, his sons, Bob (Deb), Brian (Deb), and daughter, Sue Bergren (Terry), five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Community Care/ Palliative Care nurses (thanks Mern) for their wonderful care and support. Thanks also to Fischer’s Funeral Services for all their help and support. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Shuswap Community Care. “I have fished through fishless days that I remember happily without regret.”-Robert Haig-Brown Arrangements entrusted to FISCHER’S FUNERAL SERVICES & CREMATORIUM LTD., Salmon Arm (250) 833-1129.
