Help shape local transit services
You’re invited to help shape the future of public transportation in the communities of Falkland, Sicamous, Malakwa and Swansea. At the request of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and the District of Sicamous, BC Transit will conduct a feasibility study to assess the service needs in each community. The broader issues of regional connections will be considered including the viability of linking Falkland to the Vernon Regional Transit System; and the potential for regional service from Sicamous, Malakwa and Swansea Point to the Shuswap Regional Transit System. BC Transit wants to hear from all residents in Falkland, Sicamous, Malakwa and Swansea Point; whether they are current or potential transit users, through either public open houses or surveys. Surveys can be found online at www.bctransit.com/transitfuture until March 10, 2013.
Immersion info
The annual information night for September’s Kindergarten French immersion classes is being held at Bastion Elementary on Tuesday, March 5, beginning at 7:00 p.m.; and Canadian Parents for French, the organization that helped bring French immersion to Salmon Arm 10 years ago, would like ensure all parents know about it. Please attend and learn about the advantages of early language acquisition. There are also a limited number of spaces available for students to start the FI program at Grade 1. On the same evening at Shuswap Middle School, there will be an information meeting for the late FI program which starts at Grade 6 at SMS. Parents with students who are in an English Grade 5 program should attend; and this year, if the numbers break out evenly into 1 or 2 classes, parents will be able to register that night and avoid the usual lineups on Registration Day, April 3. If it doesn’t work out evenly, then there will be a telephone call-in system, so it is critical that all interested parents attend on March 5 as decisions will be made that night. The late program is also the last time to be able to enter the FI program and graduate with a bilingual Dogwood Certificate, so don’t miss out. It is now known that the best time to learn a second language is before puberty.
Open houses will be held on the following dates: • Monday, Mar. 4, 7–9 p.m. Sicamous Council Chambers (446 Main St) • Tuesday, Mar. 5, 7–9 p.m. Falkland Community Hall (5706 Highway 97) Or, find the survey online at www. bctransit.com/transitfuture until March 10th. BC Transit will present its findings to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and to the District of Sicamous in the late spring. Those findings will include both feasibility conclusions and potential service options such as routes and associated costs. The Shuswap Regional Transit System carried 118,000 passenger trips in 2011/12. The Vernon Regional Transit System reported 444,000 passenger trips in 2011/12. Mullein
Mullein, or Verbascum densiflorum, is also known as Goldenrod and belongs to the spinach family. It has various uses, ranging from external applications to internal uses in the body. Externally, the fomentation of mullein leaves in hot water is very good for the treatment of piles, hemorrhoids and other itching complaints. This herb can be mixed with olive oil to soothe and heal inflamed skin, and is used in creams and ointments to heal wounds. For ear infections, mullein flowers are steeped in olive oil and strained (do not put anything, whether herbs or drops, in the ears until consulting a doctor). Mullein has mucilage that soothes the epithelium lining if it has been injured by infection. A poultice of leaves or flowers can help with cuts, burns, scalds and boils. This herb is useful in most conditions that affect the respiratory system. It is an ideal remedy for toning the mucous membranes of the respiratory system and reducing inflammation by stimulating fluid production and promoting expectoration. It is soothing for a sore throat, and in treating bronchitis where there is a hard cough. In fact, mullein can be combined with other herbs like anise, marshmallow or slippery elm in various kinds of herbal teas to treat colds, coughs and flu. Mullein tea may help with diarrhea as well, as it has tannins which helps with an inflamed mucosa of gastro intestine.. Before using this herb it is best to consult a healthcare practitioner as it may react with certain medication or conditions.

Chiropractic and lifestyle change
I was recently discussing my weekly articles I write for this paper with an individual in my practice who was wondering why I focus so much attention on topics they personally did not consider to be “chiropractic” issues. What ensued was a very interesting discussion about health, wellness, and how chiropractic is actually an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Following this discussion, I realized it would be beneficial to share some of this conversation. The first issue we discussed was how chronic illness is now the single greatest threat to our health, the quality of our life, to our economy, and to our standard of living. To give you an idea of how much of a burden chronic illness is in British Columbia, in 2008, 42% of ALL government spending went towards sickness treatment. This cost is frighteningly forecasted to grow towards 70% by 2017! 34% of British Columbians have chronic illness which consumes 80% of healthcare dollars. Our current “sickness treatment” approach to healthcare is not sustainable, and it is not working. All of the literature shows that lifestyle is the cause of chronic illness. So, if we are heading towards financial disaster due to lifestyle issues, the ONLY evidence-based solution to this crisis to prevent and recover from chronic illness is through prevention and improved lifestyle. The evidence also confirms that improvements to lifestyle are far more effective and are much more cost effective, than medical treatment of chronic illness. Returning our discussion to chiro-
practic, I pointed out it is not limited to being an effective therapy for spinal conditions. Chiropractic follows a philosophy of the importance of a healthy lifestyle for people to improve their physical, mental, and social well-being. Rather than just help reduce spine-related symptoms such as neck and back pain or headaches, we look at the body as a “whole.” If there is interference in the nervous system (spinal subluxation), it will impede with the correct function of glands, organs and tissues that are controlled by the affected nerves. We see it in practice every day. Patients suffering with chronic heartburn, IBS, anxiety, PMS, indigestion, constipation, incontinence etc, will often improve once they begin chiropractic care and continue with weekly to monthly wellness visits. Having said that, chiropractic is not a “cure” nor a “treatment” for any symptom or aliment. Our goal as wellness chiropractors is to remove subluxation and allow your body to heal itself. Human beings are a sum of all parts. You don’t suffer from headaches because your diet is lacking in Tylenol… To find the cure, look to the cause. In all levels of society, from federal and provincial governments right down to the individual, the solution to our health and financial problems is easily obtained through a common sense and a wellness lifestyle. Make chiropractic part of that wellness lifestyle. To learn how to begin taking control of your health contact the chiropractors at Harbourfront Family Chiropractic at (250) 803-0224.

EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY
If you live in snow country like most of us reading this do, and you want to check the insulation level in your roof to see if your home is not performing well in terms of energy efficiency, compare the rate at which the snow melts with neighbors or other homes in town. Call in a professional to assess the insulation in your roof; you may need an upgrade, which might involve more insulation being installed, and/or an improvement in ventilation.
About pleated shades
www.lakeshorenews.bc.ca
When we were kids making accordion-folded paper fans, one of us stashed that information away and later figured out that with a few cords running through the folds it could become an operable window covering. And the pleated shade was born. Originating from the Netherlands, these shades are one of the most popular and inexpensive window coverings out there. A definition: A shade is a window covering made from what appears to be one piece of fabric, as opposed to a blind which is a window covering made of slats of wood or a man-made rigid composite. Pleated shades appear to be a single piece of fabric; whereas a wood blind is a series of slats held together with cords. The exception to the rule (there had to be one, didn’t there?) is the Roman blind, which is actually a shade. The addition of a reflective backing on the window side of the single-layer pleated shade increases the heat-reflecting factor and provides additional privacy. The cord holes, however, decrease the privacy coverage. The amount of space required on each side of the shade for hardware mounting can be as much as one-third of an inch. The blinds are relatively thin and they compress into a small space when in the up position–typically a 48-inch long blind stacks up into 2 1/4 inches. If you need day-time privacy with
designdilemmas by Linda Erlam
some heat-reflecting capabilities, and you have a limited budget, these shades are well-suited to your needs. They are available in most big box stores where they can be cut to your exact window width, or they can be ordered through our favourite catalogue department store. Or you can have them custom-made to fit your windows. A company like Hunter Douglas will make them to fit odd shapes like octagons or archedshaped windows as well. Most of the custom window covering companies have many fabrics to choose from in their pleated lines. Some fabrics are opaque, some resemble lace, some look like linen. You can have a double shade allowing you to have a sheer shade and an opaque shade on one headrail. Or you can have a shade that drops from the top and stacks at the bottom–a topdown shade. This option is wonderful for rooms too close to the street or a neighbour; you can cover the bottom section of the window, leaving the top section open. Downside: the vertical guide cords are visible when the window is exposed. There, in a nutshell, is the pleated shade. Call me if you would like more information. Designsewlutions. ca.

RDNO free spring yard waste drop-off
The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) reminds residents that the free spring yard and garden waste drop off period will run from March 15 to April 30 at all RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities (RDFs). Trimmings, prunings, leaves, grass, mulch and other organic material less than 20 cm (or approximately 8 inches) in diameter originating from residential yard and garden work will be accepted free-of-charge at the Greater Vernon, Armstrong/ Spallumcheen, Lumby, Kingfisher, and Cherryville RDFs during this time. “Our facilities can get very busy during the free yard waste drop off period. Your patience and cooperation is appreciated,” requests Dale Danallanko, RDNO Recycling and Facilities Operations Manager. “Please ensure your load is adequately secured with a tarp or cargo net, follow the signs and directions from facility staff, and be sure to empty all plastic bags and boxes containing yard and garden waste. Kraft paper bags can be left in the yard waste pile, but we ask that you cut or tear the paper bags open,” he adds. Please note the following: • This program is for residential yard and garden waste only, self-hauled by residents. • Rocks, concrete, plastic, and refuse must not be deposited in the RDF yard waste pile. These materials contaminate the pile and make it unsuitable for composting. The disposal fee for yard and garden waste at all RDNO RDFs outside of the designated free period is $20 per metric tonne (two cents per kilogram). Operating hours for each of the RDFs are posted on the RDNO website, www.rdno.ca, and at each facility. Check with your local municipal office for more information about spring yard and garden waste collection programs available in your area.

Tax News from Susan Grimes at H&R Block Bookkeeping can be made easier by categorizing your receipts... An easy way to accomplish this is to have envelopes or folders labelled with the applicable category and every time you have a receipt just drop it into the applicable folder. That way your receipts are already sorted ready for tax time. You must also remember that debit receipts alone are not acceptable and cannot be used. Although they show where you made a purchase they do not detail what you purchased and therefore cannot be used. The same issue occurs with cheque stubbs. You should have the invoice that you paid with the method of payment on it . Ideally you also have your cancelled cheque backfrom the bank showing that the amount actually went through the bank. Keeping a separate bank account for your business is a good idea and all personal purchases should be kept separate from business expenses. i.e. if you buy fuel on your business debit card, don’t add lotto tickets, newspapers or cigarettes to the same bill. On an audit CRA will look at both business and personal accounts, so be sure you can explain any and all deposits to your personal account. Come in and see us for all your business needs.

bite the hand that feeds it. I saw a copy of the paper recently that had an article on the front page about organics having GMOs, so I bought it for $3.25. I agree that many varieties of fruits, vegetables and grains were formed in laboratories, but they were not altered so they wouldn’t reproduce and new seed had to be bought from the company every spring. With Monsanto, if some of its seed was blown to the neighbour’s farm, the company sued for theft and growing its product without a contract. Monsanto had only 1/3 page in the Feb. 7 issue for its Roundup and Heat. The big ads were from chemical companies BASF, Axial, Stellar, Novozymes, and four pages from DuPont. Many might be for Round-up Ready crops.
CAR GIVEAWAY FOR SETTERS’ 18th ANNIVERSARY
Terry and Ellen Swityk invite you to enter their draw for a brand new 2012 Chevy Cruz that is under a canopy in front of Setters’ Pub. It’s to celebrate their 18th year in the pub. They came in 2005 and added a liquor store in 2003. The 15-week contest ends with the final draw on May 11. Setters’ Pub and Liquor Store is located behind Super 8 Motel and across the street from McDonald’s. You need to enter on the special entry form at Setters’ Pub and Liquor Store. No purchase is necessary. One entry per person per visit, but on Thursdays all day and Saturdays between 11 and 5, each person can make two entries in the pub. Every Monday, 10 entries will be drawn from the clear plastic box in each store and the 20 people will be called and asked to be present at 2 p.m. the following Saturday. The customers will draw three semi-finalists whose names will be written on a board on the wall. The three must be present. On May 11, the final draw date, the names of 45 semi-finalists will on the board. One will be the guaranteed winner who must be present to win. It will be exciting!
FOREIGNERS BUYING SASKATCHEWAN FARMS
A former resident who keeps up with happenings back home said that Chinese people are buying Saskatchewan farms. The younger generation of Canadians just doesn’t want to farm. Another person said a man from Holland bought a lot of farmland and then didn’t know what to do with it, so he is renting it to prairie farmers.
WESTERN PRODUCER WRITES ABOUT ORGANIC
I stopped reading the Western Producer many years ago because the chemical company Monsanto had so many fullpage ads. None of the negative publicity and lawsuits about Monsanto were printed in the farm paper because it couldn’t
DEEP CREEK MAY PRODUCE GOOD HORSEMEAT
Meat is meat. Would you agree? Britain and Ireland found horse DNA in some meat products that were imported from European countries and they are sick over it. When I see beef cattle raised in a tight enclosure along Highway 97B, with their coats coated in excrement from lying in it, their beef is not very appetizing. When I see horses along Deep Creek Road, they have a huge field to roam in, and their coats are shiny. Their ground meat may taste the same or better than beef.
FOUR-LANING PROGRAM FOR HIGHWAY # 1
A most impressive display of proposed highway widening between Kamloops and the Alberta border was shown at a public information session in Kamloops, Chase, Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Revelstoke and Golden. Present to answer questions were many from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and their contractors. Not included in the proposals are the Salmon River Bridge near Demille’s Produce, and the Squilax Store, which may be a heritage building. Feedback is welcomed on the equally impressive handout, and on www.bchwy1.ca. It is estimated at $650-million, but It’s a 10-year plan so don’t get your shirt in a knot.
NESKONLITH IS HOLDING UP SMARTCENTRES
I met the two most senior men from the highways ministry at the information session in Salmon Arm on Feb. 20. I said we hear that the department of highways is holding back approval at the SmartCentre site, and one of the sources was a letter-to-the-editor in the Salmon Arm Observer on Dec. 19, 2013 giving two reasons for the delay: “In spite of the 2,400-page treatise submitted to the Ministry of Transport by SmartCentres two years ago, and scads of correspondence since then, the ministry has not yet given any form of approval for this contentious location.”
“Secondly, a number of these ‘taxpayers’ from Salmon Arm were sufficiently opposed to the treatment of this financially challenged reserve that they donated generously to help them seek justice.” So I asked Murray Tekano from Kelowna and Mike Lorimer from Kamloops what is holding up their approval. They said they have a duty to consult with the chief and council from the Neskonlith band. They gave them information recently and are giving them time to respond. I asked if it was six months and they said no, a few weeks.
NEW LAWS FOR COMMON-LAW COUPLES
On March 18, 2013, a couple that has been living together for two years will be considered full spouses under the law. On that day, B.C.’s new Family Law Act comes into effect. When you wake up on March 18, if you decide to separate that day or any date after it, you will divide the property in half, divide the family assets, and assume the same spousal support of the children as a married couple. So if your common-law relationship is so-so, and you have thought of leaving, you may want to move out within the next two weeks.
ROMAN CATHOLIC POPE BENEDICT RESIGNS
Yesterday was the last day in office at the Vatican for 85-year-old Pope Benedict. Beginning today, he resides in an apartment attached to the Vatican and will not take part in decision-making. He said he doesn’t have the energy to continue. When he got a Twitter account on December 12, 2012, I was worried that he would be inundated with negative tweets from some of the million and a half followers, and they would come from all over the world, in many languages. They would be enough to send an old man into a depression.
SENIOR WOMAN WANTS LIVE-IN HELPER
I was in the home of a happy woman who sees 100 in the far horizon and she needs help in her home. She uses a cane and a walker. She gave up her driver’s licence last year. Her son helps her a bit. She lives alone in the south-east part of Salmon Arm. I asked what would help her stay in her home as long as possible. She said she would like a younger woman to live in her home and do cooking and cleaning. The helper would sleep in the downstairs bedroom and have her own washroom. She wouldn’t have to pay anything, and groceries would be supplied. Interested? Write to me at sallys1@telus. net. White Lake logging situation not as bad as predicted
As a resident of the White Lake community, I would like to share my thoughts regarding the recent logging in White Lake. What began as a possible disaster for our community has turned out to be an acceptable part of living within a working forest. Even though there was a rough start with the BCTS regarding some of the internal legal aspects of the old logging plan; in the end, the BCTS worked diligently with the WRLA team Bryon Every and Alf Davy to resolve the critical issues our community had. George Abbott quickly realized the importance and offered immediate support. The Minister of Forests, Steve Thompson, put a lot of effort into analyzing

the situation and worked with the BCTS to help with a resolution. As for the contractor who did the job, my understanding is that he has had previous experience with this kind of select logging. He was fully aware of the importance of this block, Block K1K7, to our community; and he and his crew went the extra mile to follow the strict guidelines placed in the license and used their ability to produce a clean, effective and signifigant product that benefitted everyone involved. The Ministry of Forests should recognize the value of a conscientious logger and offer incentives to promote what we have witnessed.

I hope that White Lake will be considered a model for future forestry-related plans within other communities;showing that concerns can be resolved with sufficient organization and communication, with benefits to be reaped by all. It is rewarding to see that the government and community can get together and work together to resolve reasonable concerns. It also gives residents of White Lake a real opportunity to witness that many of the fear tactics that flow from anti-logging groups and individuals, is exactly that – non-beneficial fear tactics. New tax credit for seniors
For 2012 there is a new tax credit for seniors living in BC. If you aren’t 65+, don’t stop reading because it still might apply to you. The tax credit is called the B.C. Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit. Basically it helps seniors with the cost of renovations to make their home more functional and safe. To qualify you need to be 65 years of age or older and a resident of BC at the end of the taxation year. It should be noted that you can also claim the credit if you are a family member living with a senior. The credit came into affect on April 1, 2012 so the only expenses that qualify are those that were incurred after this date. The credit is calculated as 10% of qualifying renovation expenses to a maximum of $10,000 in expenses. So the maximum credit is $1,000 or 10% of $10,000. What qualifies? Some examples are walk-in bathtubs, grab bars around toilets, widening passage doors and motion-activated lighting. Some examples of expenditures that don’t qualify are general maintenance/repairs, roof repairs and new standard appliances. The renovations also need to be made to a home that is your primary residence. So if you were thinking of upgrading your cabin on the lake you are out of luck. For a more detailed list of what may or may not qualify, be sure to talk to your accountant or look it up online on the BC government website. Remember, to qualify the renovation needs to be for something that helps improve access to the home or mobility within the home. To claim the credit, it needs to be included when you file your personal tax return. Another interesting tidbit is that you can claim qualifying expenses even if you claim them as part of your medical tax credit. It isn’t too often that the government lets you can double up on the expenses you can claim. So if you are 65 years or older, be sure you are taking advantage of this new credit. Remember, NOW THAT Mall Arkey prefers to see that money in your pocket more than seeing it go to Ottawa, or in this case Victoria.

With 3 JUNOs under his belt–including two Songwriter Of The Year awards (2009, 2012), and 3 Platinum-selling albums–Green is gearing up to release his 4th City and Colour studio album this summer. Snow removal practices don’t seem cost-effective we had 8 inches of snow, the snow quit falling at 8:30 p.m. Two ploughs came at 9 p.m., sat and talked a few minutes, backed up, and went ahead a few times and then left. I thought that was strange, and that they had to plough the main arteries first. When I went out in the morning, they had not cleared the parking area. The next morning, a friend and I were going to Armstrong on 10 Ave SE. We met the same ploughs with their blades down;

the first one was not doing anything; and the second one was catching the snowbank about 8 inches, leaving snow on all the driveways. The clear area on the road was already plenty wide; no need to have them out. Not only does this cost a lot of money for gas and labour, but also causes unnecessary wear and tear on the equipment. Faces in stone
SAGA Public Art Gallery in Salmon Arm is pleased to present “Faces in Stone,” a sculptural exhibition by First Nations artist Audrey Nanimahoo. The exhibition opens Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. and runs until Saturday, March 30. Audrey Nanimahoo was born into the Cree Nation in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. As a small child Audrey always had a passion to sketch, and as an adult began painting folk art designs on stone and wood with acrylic paints. This eventually led to carving the wood, which then opened the door to stone. “In 2002 we came across a deposit of unusual green soapstone. We tried to sell the stone through our landscaping company, but had no luck. Something within the stone called to me to carve the stone. The stone
responded by giving up the secrets locked within. I believe that certain things are meant to be, I was guided to find this talent within myself and release it.” Audrey’s studio is located near Malakwa, and she currently exhibits her work nationwide. The opening reception is Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m., with live music and refreshments. The exhibition runs March 2nd to 30th, 2013. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The exhibition is sponsored by Team Linda Rohlfs. Coffee Break and Artist Talk is on Thursday, March 21 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. There will be an Artist Trading Card trading session on Tuesday, March 14 from 3:00–4:00 p.m. Family Saturdays continue each Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Orchard Park Terrace
Shimmering ice-crusted boulders nestle against green, flowing water. Snows are slowly receding along the edge of the bush line, as a cow moose bends heavy hazelnut limbs using her ‘bell’ (a dewlap, or flap of skin hanging under the chin), and her baby nibbles the tender tips. Spring approaches, as Mother Nature releases her winter grip along the lower Adams River, and through the heart of Roderick Haig-Brown Park. An interesting article in the February 22nd edition of the Shuswap Market News regarding upgrades to Roderick Haig-Brown Park, twigged my imagination. Following is a bit of history of the river, and park, followed by a few good laughs from a fisheries perspective. Camped on and used by the Shuswap Indians, Adams Lake appears as “Choo choo ach,” as shown on a map made in 1827 by Archibald McDonald showing the “Thompson’s River District.” It was renamed after a Shuswap Indian chief, Sel-howt-ken, who was baptized in 1849 by Father Nobili and given the name Adam. Walter Moberly, (then chief surveyor) reported that when he visited the lake in 1865, “he made acquaintance of Adam and Eve, an Indian and his wife. Consequently, the river flowing from the lake became Adam’s River. Roderick L. Haig-Brown: Although his pen is stilled; his memory, and the work and dedication that he applied to conservation, will live on for many generations to come. It was a young and ardent HaigBrown who came to the Nimkish Valley on Vancouver Island in the late 1920’s. As an avid outdoors man from Sussex, England, he fell in love with this wild place. He worked, logging and fishing, with dreams of success; and chose a a home on the banks of the Campbell River with his new wife Ann, in 1934. He soon became an acclaimed author, conservationist, community leader, then magistrate, as well as a renowned fly fisher. Over his life, he wrote 27 books and over 200 articles on the subject of salmon and steelhead conservation. He believed that “any given generation of men can have only a lease, not ownership, of the earth; and one essential term of the lease is that the earth be handed on to the next generation with unimpaired potentialities.” Roderick died in October of 1976, while puttering in his garden on the banks of his beloved river. One of the resolutions of the BC Wildlife Federation,

in around 1978, in the strongest terms, was to establish a park along the Adams River in his memory. The government agreed, and land was set aside on Vancouver Island. Then, in what is called an incredible display of revenge, the name of the park was to have been “Schoen,” even though press releases said HaigBrown Park had been written, and released. The reason for the abrupt change, was that a prominent Social Creditor, had reminded the government that HaigBrown was sympathetic to the NDP. There were several saying he quoted often, and in our ‘making-abuck’ world, and sometimes forgetting about the environment, we are losing and dearly depend on, we can do well to heed him. He said; “I have two hopes for the future. The first and lesser one is that game commissions will have sense enough to set limits that reflect the sport safely available. The second, deeply urgent one, is that we shall grow a race of sportsmen, no one of whom will ever consider it a sense of pride, to kill a limit.” Each November in the Adams River, spawning coho salmon were counted from Zodiac raft, drifting the cold, turbulent, system. We also walked Hiuhihill (Bear) Creek’s many channels. On this particular cold morning, my boss Byril and I went through the canyon, and bounced off a wall sideways, filling the raft. Pulling the Zodiac ashore, we proceeded to empty icy-cold water from our waders. There, perched on a very large rock, was Miles King’s wife, (Salmon commission days), with fishin’ pole in hand, grinning, as we also drained the raft with two miles to go. Another time, an angler had just cast a lure, as we came around a bend, hooking the safety ropes of the zodiac. Biggest catch of the day! We returned his lure after the spawning count, and drifted out to the outlet of Shuswap Lake.

Ladies have pet peeves about their husbands, I’m sure. Us guys also have minor issues with the gals. One I remember was the impatience my Dad had with Mom, when she doddled in the mall, or other shopping stops; prettying up, wanting to look nice going out! Well, it’ll be hard to beat this one...A elderly couple stopped for lunch at a roadside restaurant while on a road trip. When leaving, the lady left her glasses on the table. She didn’t miss them until they were about 40 minutes Centenoka Park Mall down the highway. It took a while to find a turnaround, and when they did, the ol’ geezer became the grouchy ol’ man. He fussed, complained, and scolded her relentlessly, on the return trip. He just wouldn’t let up for a minute! To her relief, they finally arrived back at the restaurant. As the wife got out of the car to hurry inside to retrieve her glasses, the ol’ geezer yelled at her, “While you’re in there, ya might as well get my hat and the credit card.” This coming week is senior mental health week. You can do your part by contacting at least one unstable senior to show you care. Be safe on our highArm - Centenoka Park Mall • 250-832-6405 ways and byways, and get out in the fresh air!

A shot in the arm
It’s February and by now I am heartily sick of the “free” flu shot ads, especially when they are placed right beside an empowering immune boosting column from Dr. Warren Gage. Nothing but kindness, encouragement and patience is free. Why do some people get a nasty round or two of colds or influenza and others simply have a few days of sniffles and carry on their merry old way? Are some born with more immune boosters than others? Does immunity start in the head, the gut or the bowel? It turns out all of the above. The greatest power shot you can give your disease fighting cells is a healthy gut flora! 1. Flood your gut with the best probiotics on the market. You can check out their freshness by placing the powder in freshly-made nut milk. Leave this at room temperature overnight and voila, you have a lovely “yoghurt like” topping for your granola. You can also double dose on naturally fermented sauerkraut. 2. Sugar is the biggest enemy of your immune system. Period. Having your blood sugar and insulin levels go up and down like a yo-yo steals your energy and creates havoc in all body systems. Don’t forget that bread is part of the blood sugar yo-yo gang. 3. Your next immune-boosting aid can be a nice gentle cleansing of the bowels. Colonics are the newest rage in Hollywood, so I can’t see why it would gross you out. Of course you can replace your bowel blockers (cheese, too much meat and gluten-rich food) with lots of fresh greens and avoid that dreaded visit to the colonic specialist. 4. Now that you think “inside clean,” spring into action with a walk, run, snowshoe or ski and (5.) breathe in extraordinary clean forest-filtered oxygen for another immune boosting (6.) good night’s sleep. (continued at right)

By Peter Kociuba The L. Turner Contracting Salmon Arm SilverBacks Atom A Development team travelled to Merritt on Saturday to tangle with Fountain Tire in a pair of back-to-back games. The Backs came out fired up on Saturday, skating and passing the puck like a team with nothing to lose. Colby Feist converted a sweet Connor Kociuba outlet pass to take the lead early in the first period. After Merritt scored a pair to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, Feist would get his second of the night on the power play early in the second. Taylor Howard picked the top corner a few minutes later and Connor McKee converted a Marino Bordin net-front dish to even the score at 4-4 after two. Howard converted a juicy rebound for his second of the night mid way through the 3rd period to give the Backs a 5-4 lead, but they couldn’t hold on. Merritt found the back of the net with just over 6 minutes left in the game to finish it off in a 5-5 tie. Sunday’s change of venue to Memorial Arena proved to be just what Salmon Arm needed, as they plastered Merritt 8-4 in their second of two. After a successful penalty kill, Jared Feist opened the scoring early in the first period and Marino Bordin slammed home a rebound for the Back’s second of the night to stake the Backs to a 2-0 lead after 1. Brendan Mayes hit the back of the net on a goal mouth feed from Colby Feist early in the second, and Feist got his first of two on the night a short time later, out waiting the Merritt netminder on a clear breakaway. Marino Bordin showed some finish as he shot back across the grain after getting the goalie moving side to side, and the SilverBacks took a 6-2 lead into the third intermission on Jared Feist’s second of the night. Mayes would get his second of the night in the third period to cap off an impressive 8-4 win for the Backs. The SilverBacks travel to Penticton for the playoffs next weekend.

Ring Robbers even up against Westside
By Peter Kociuba The Shuswap Ring Robbers welcomed Westside to the pond this past weekend, skating to a 9-9 tie. After Westside struck first, Cadence PetitclercCrosby opened the scoring for the Ring Robbers just over 5 minutes into the game to pull even with their opponents. Shuswap would take a brief lead a few minutes later on a Brianna Howard marker, and again and again via Delaney Perry’s first period pair. Westside struck back to tie it up heading into the first intermission. The second period proved much the same as the first, as the teams traded goal for goal in the ultimate see-saw battle. Perry’s hat trick goal and a sweet one-timer from Natasha Kociuba would push the Robbers back ahead by one, before Westside again tied it up at 6. Petitclerc-Crosby would score 12 seconds later to again hand the lead to Shuswap, but Westside again had the answer. The visitors would take a 9-7 lead late into the 2nd period, before Chloe Latosky scored with just over two minutes left in the game to get the Robbers back within one. Kociuba’s second of the night sealed the tie with just over a minute to play in regulation. The Robbers are idle next weekend before welcoming Vernon to the Shaw Centre on the following Saturday. By Erin Janowsky and Sarah Lenarduzzi Salmon Arm Silverbacks Atom B Development team, coached by Gerry Rasmuson and Brad May, ended their 2012 regular hockey season with two games this weekend. The last home game of the season had the SilverBacks facing the Westside Warriors on Saturday. The game was an even match through the first period with no goals from either team but the Warriors were the first to score with a goal at the start of the second period. The SilverBacks tied up the game with a great shot by Matt Bushell and defenseman, Kai Fazan, came in on an amazing singlehanded deke, giving the ‘Backs a 2-1 lead. With solid goaltending by Rod May, the ‘Backs gained momentum as Matt Bushell got his second goal of the night with Austin York sealing the deal making it a 4-2 win for the SilverBacks. Looking to take a second win for the weekend, the ‘Backs faced off against the Atom B Development team in Revelstoke, The Grizzlies, however, came out hard with three goals in the first period. But the ‘Backs game back with a tip in goal by Justin Schielke and an unassisted goal by Damian Earl. Despite outstanding goal tending by Carson Irmen, the ‘Backs had to settle for a 3-2 loss in the final game of the regular season. Salmon Arm SilverBacks Atom B Development team will head down to Penticton this weekend for the Atom B Development playoffs. The SilverBacks would like to thank their sponsor, Abundant Specialty Advertising, for all of its support this year.

TAURUS
Surround yourself with friends and family this week, Taurus. You should have some downtime, and you can use this time to catch up and reconnect with your loved ones.
GEMINI
Gemini, some levels of communication may be compromised this week, so your messages may not reach the intended recipient. It could take a little longer to get your point across.
CANCER
Cancer, your boundless energy keeps people happy and engaged and should be used as much as possible in the next few days. You also could be sought after to fix problems.
LEO
Leo, tap into your creative side to shake things up and stave off some boredom. Others may think your actions are suspect, but you know these efforts will help you achieve your ultimate goal.
VIRGO
You have to accept that things change and you cannot preserve the present, Virgo. That said, start making plans for new things for this year starting with right now.
LIBRA
Libra, although you are able to think quickly, you much prefer to have things organized. If you have a presentation to make next week, start working on it now.
