Roy Rowe gave up aspirations of being a journalist by enlisting in the Signal Core of the British Army, and was involved in the invasion of North Africa in WWII. Josette’s father was the manager of the Bank of France in Algiers, Algeria, a French Colony at the time. Her older brothers were in the French Army, and quickly made friends with the

British and American soldiers. Roy, along with the other soldiers, was invited to many dinners. He spoke fluent French and became a regular guest of Josette’s family. A romantic spark grew between Roy and Josette and they married January 8, 1943. A daughter, Shirley, was born in May 1944. Roy wanted to get Josette and Shirley to his family in England, before the end of the war. He managed to get them on a British war ship with some other French war brides leaving Algiers in January 1945. It was a dangerous trip, as the ship had to pull into the Gibraltar Harbour and wait for German submarines to pass. Shirley and Josette lived
with Roy’s parents in Hornchurch, Essex, which was difficult for Josette because she didn’t speak English. Roy was still in the army, now serving in Italy, but finally in 1946 returned to his loved ones in England. With a family to support, Roy took a job with an insurance company. A son, Stephen, was born in January 1952. Now with his growing family, Roy wanted a better life for them so decided to immigrate to Canada. Roy accepted a job in Edmonton, Alberta as an Insurance Claims Adjuster. They left England by ship in April 1956, arriving in Montreal; and then travelled by CP Rail to Edmonton. Josette worked at Eatons in Edmonton for many years in the drapery department. After a number of years, Roy and Josette made a

I learned a lot of stuff this last year that I intend to keep close. I always feel a bit better if I learn something every day. Here are a few things I learned this year that I’d like to share with you. I learned about Quirky.com- a place for everyday people to submit ideas of things that need to be made. You know, like when you are peeling an onion and you have an a-ha moment and can just “see” the perfect invention but have no idea how to go about getting it made? Quirky.com. Like a spray attachment for a lemon or lime. Yup, it attaches right to the fruit. Depress the pump - like the pumps available for oil or vinegar spraying - and juice comes out in a mist. Isn’t that wonderful? $5.99. Once the product is produced you can buy it directly from the Quirky. com online store. I didn’t learn about TED this year, but I want to make sure you all know about it. Technology, Education, and Design – TED. Talks from experts on everything; over 1100 talks. TED: Ideas Worth Spreading. TED.com. Rather than spend 20 minutes looking at an online catalogue, or someone else’s wish-list (think pinned things...) why not choose something from the TED list and be entertained, laugh and learn something all at the same time? I rarely get out of the TED site without some gem to take forward with me. For example, Markham Nolan: How to separate
fact from fiction online, or Ben Saunders: Why bother leaving the house? (In 2004 he was the youngest person to ever ski to the North Pole); Mike Rowe: Learning from dirty jobs; or Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are. career change and decided to manage the Tonquin Inn Motel in Jasper. In 1973 they moved to British Columbia to another motel management position at the Spanish Inn Motel, in Kelowna. They wintered near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for many years and then in southern California. They lived in many B.C. communities over the years. In February 2006, Roy and Josette made Salmon Arm their home. Josette lives at Shuswap Lodge, an assisted living complex, and Roy was moved in 2009 to Arbour Lodge, a full-care facility. Not a day goes by that Josette
isn’t seen visiting her husband. Shirley and Rob Wheeler, together with Stephen and Kim Rowe, sixgrandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren wish Roy and Josette a very happy 70th wedding anniversary.

Positive attitude
One aspect of our practice that people notice and often comment upon is the upbeat, positive, and friendly atmosphere expressed by both doctors and our staff. We are very proud of the amazing job done by our team in their constant, conscious effort to bring positivity to every patient interaction. While this upbeat and friendly nature comes naturally to all of us, it is an environment that we consciously strive to maintain not only in practice but also in our daily lives. The importance of positivity, laughter, friendliness, and optimism related to positive clinical outcomes in healthcare is being investigated more frequently. Very interesting research on this topic is being published in the most prestigious (and often most conservative) medical journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, Spine, Nature Neuroscience, and the Lancet to name a few. Through investigation of the connection between emotions and healing, researchers have discovered that chronic pain causes brain tissues to physically lose density on brain scans. Interestingly, they have also discovered that the more emotionally the brain reacted to the initial injury, the more likely pain would persist after the original injury has healed. Emotions affect the severity and duration of symptoms following an injury. However, in other research, positive emotional thoughts have a measurable and significant impact on health and healing. In one very interesting study scientists looked at how laughter affected immune function. Blood tests were taken from men before and after watching an hour-long humourous video. So where are you at with your Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA)? The calendar has turned over to another year which means you can add to your TFSA again. The TFSA has been around for five years now; so potentially you could have invested up to $20,000 over the last four years plus $5,500 for 2013. So as of 2013, you could have contributed a total of $25,500 to your TFSA. We thought the contribution limit was going to go up to $5,500 in 2012, but in the end it was kept at $5,000. You may recall that the contribution limit is tied to inflation, but with increases in $500 increments only. Using 2009 as the base year, $5,000 increasing by inflation each year didn’t quite reach $5,500 by the end of 2011 as the government had expected. However, for 2013 the limit has finally gone over the hump. If you are like most people, the thought of coming up with $5,500 seems daunting. However, like any good savings programs it is important to save a little than nothing at all; even if it is $50 per month. Remember, this savings vehicle is the best thing the government has come up with in years; even decades! So we need to be taking advantage of it. If you are like me, you haven’t maximized your contributions each year. No problem! Your contribution room carries over even if you haven’t used it. What does this mean? Well, let’s assume you haven’t ever set up a TFSA. As mentioned, you could contribute up to $25,500 this year ($5,000 for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and $5,500 for 2013). As you can see, you never lose the contribution room even if you aren’t able to maximize it every year. Do you have money currently invested that is non-registered and isn’t locked into a term deposit? By this I mean a regular investment that isn’t an RSP or RIF. Do you also have TFSA contribution room available? If this is the case, why don’t you redeem some of your non-registered funds and maximize your TFSA? It is better to be earning income inside a TFSA and avoiding tax than it is to be paying tax on income earned from a regular investment. NOTE: Before you withdraw your funds, be sure to check the tax consequences. A capital gain could be triggered when moving funds from a regular investment to a TFSA. So have you been trying to think of a good New Year’s Resolution? A good resolution would be to start saving some money, and better yet, in a Tax Free Savings Account. Earning money without having to pay tax? It doesn’t get better than that.

On December 21st and 22nd, the South Shuswap Fire Department held a fundraising benefit for the Sorrento Food Bank at the Blind Bay Village Grocer. In addition to the 500-plus pounds of food donated, the two day event also brought in cash donations of $1500, and over 60 fine winter coats for distribution. The Sorrento Food Bank is extremely grateful for the effort put into this endeavour by the firefighters, and all those who contributed. The SASSC will consist of up to 10 volunteers who will participate in the development of the Shuswap Agriculture Strategy.
The Shuswap Agriculture Strategy project is meant to support the growth of the agriculture sector of the Shuswap region in order to create a sustainable agriculture economy, promote protection of agriculturally capable land, and to integrate existing economic and land use policies into future CSRD strategic plans. NORTH OKANAGAN URGED TO GO GE-FREE
A delegation will be at the North Okanagan Regional District boardroom in Coldstream at 9848 Aberdeen Rd & Hwy #6 on Wed., Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. to inform directors why the RDNO should declare itself to be free of genetically engineered crops. I plan to be there. The presentation will be made by Bee SAFE (Securing Agriculture and a Food Economy). Its focus is to preserve rural farmland and family farms instead of seeing rural areas become filled with factory farms and GMO crops which pollute rivers, aquifers, soil and air. A press release states: “We need all the people who believe in sustainable agriculture to show up so directors see that this is not a fringe request but that it represents the wish of the majority of people who want increased access to local food that is safe for the bees and for them, and to stop using dangerous pesticides.” A map that shows GMO-free properties in Lumby, rural Lumby and Cherryville can be seen at www.beesafemonashees.org The City of Tuscon, Texas, is teaching residents how to avoid buying and eating GMOs through its website www. gmofreetucson.org. EPIPHANY AND UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS
On Jan. 6, Anglicans observe Epiphany, a festival that remembers the visit of the three wise men to baby Jesus and his baptism. The 10 a.m. Holy Eucharist service will be followed by a pot-luck lunch with an Epiphany Cake. On Jan. 6, Ukrainians celebrate Christmas Eve, and start festivities with a feast. A number of Ukrainians attend St. John’s Anglican Church at 170 Shuswap St. in Salmon Arm. Several will bring perogies, cabbage rolls and sausages to the potluck, and after lunch, will lead the singing of Ukrainian Christmas carols. Everyone is invited.

While checking schools, churches and parks with Citizens Patrol, I spotted this unique scene at Elks Park: three posts with snow piled so high that each is leaning and looks as if the posts are nodding. I wanted a picture but I didn’t bring my camera. It was late at night and pitch black. Karol, my patrolling buddy, shone her truck lights at the posts and took a picture with her fantastic palm-sized computer/cell phone. A rich musical environment
How lucky we are to have such a rich musical environment! Over the years, the School Board has protected the music programme from major cutbacks. Ultimately a number of music teachers have retired and stayed in the area. The result has been obvious this winter. Mary Landers led the men’s chorus. Jim Johnston was co-conductor of the community band as well as providing piano accompaniments for two other groups. Jim Howie took over the school and community string orchestra when Gordon Waters retired after many great years in the leadership role. Sandy Cameron has organized a continuing series of great jazz evenings. Steve

Guidone’s select Northern Lights Chorale will give several concerts later this winter. Bert Revel leads a singing group and also acts as librarian for the Men’s Chorus and the Shuswap Singers – an enormous task. (Salmon Arm, BC) – The first Okanagan Cup cross country ski race of 2012 sponsored by Teck was hosted at Larch Hills on December 30, 2012. The weather and trail conditions were perfect for the first event this year. Racers of all ages and ski ability from the Thompson/Okanagan attended to compete for individual medals and points for their club. Club points are accumulated for each race in the Okanagan Cup series and an award is given to the club with the most points at the end of the final race. Points are earned for top 5 finishers and for participation. The Larch Hills Nordic Club is currently leading the points race with 293 points, followed by Sovereign Lake Nordic Club at 174. There were several race categories, including an option to register for either the Okanagan Cup race or the Fun Race. The Hamish Jenks Memorial trophy for the top male in the 10 to 13 year old category was awarded to Petter Gaarder Dahl of the Alno Skiclub of Sweden, and the top female was Alana Brittin of the Revelstoke Nordic Club. The Ian Jenks Memorial trophy for the top male in the 14 to 17 year old category was awarded to John Connor of Larch Hills, and the top female was Hannah Mehain of Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. The overall winner of the 10 km race for men was Kurt Behnsen of Telemark Nordic Club, and the overall winner of the women’s 10 km event was Abbigail May of Larch Hills Nordic Club. Brian, Abbigail, Rachel and Trond May were awarded the Keskinen Family trophy, for earning the top family results for the race. For a complete list of race results, visit http://new.zone4.ca. The Magic of Vienna comes to Salmon Arm
Welcome the New Year and brighten your winter evening with the Kamloops Symphony’s annual performances of The Magic of Vienna on Friday, January 11th in Salmon Arm and Saturday and Sunday, January 12th and 13th in Kamloops. The Magic of Vienna is all about tradition. Everyone enjoys the beautiful melodies and motion-inducing rhythms of Viennese popular dance music from the mid nineteenth century. Music by Johann Strauss Jr., the “Waltz King”, and his contemporaries has maintained its appeal for more than two hundred years. The annual New Year’s Day performance of the Vienna Philharmonic started as a New
Year’s Eve performance Dec. 31, 1939 and has continued as a New Year’s Day event since Jan. 1, 1941. The performance is now broadcast around the world to an estimated audience of 50 million in 73 countries. The Kamloops Symphony’s 2013 program re-creates the 2010 New Year’s Concert in Vienna. The conductor for these concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic changes yearly and individuals place their stamp on the concert by choosing the program to best suit their method of presentation. In 2010 the conductor was the French maestro, Georges Prêtre. Born in 1924, Prêtre made his Vienna Philharmonic debut in 1963, conducted his first New
Year’s concert in 2008 and his second in 2010. His 2010 program included the gorgeous waltzes of J. Strauss Jr. such as Wine, Women and Song and By the Beautiful Blue Danube, polkas, galops and light opera overtures by Suppe, Lumbye and Offenbach. Many hunters who bagged their moose, elk, or deer this past fall had deboned the meats, then cut and wrapped their own. Others took game to the butcher; to have it hung, then processed. There are lots of hunting family traditions, in preparing game for the dinner table. Many wives are adept at preparing tasty game dishes. Not only do they go out with their hubbies to hunt; but later, they whip up a good variety of delicious fare for the table, whether it be roasts, stews, steaks, burger, or chops. Too, many hunters have now begun to make their own sausage, smokies, and jerky. The latest number of game animals harvested in the BC Interior, Kootenay, Shuswap, is around 14,650 animals. Whitetail doe season was extended in most parts of Region #8, allowing more venison to be put in late hunters’ freezers. With a 6-point bull elk season in the Enderby area and south, five bulls were taken, out of a growing scattered herd of about 56 animals. There was supposedly a mis-print in the drawing up of the 2012 season by biologists who are supposed to manage our game animals. The Enderby Fish and Game Club have communicated to the biologists that if there is a hunt on bull elk, that it be done by minimal LEH draw. Back to game cookery – many of us have wild game recipes stashed in cupboards. To our alltime favourites, I’d like to add one that the family, as well as game skeptics, can really enjoy. Cranberry venison: Preheat a heavy skillet, adding 2 tbsp of oil. 8 boneless venison loin steaks. Sear steaks on each side, then remove and place on a heated plate. Cover with foil. Sauce: 1/4 cup brandy or bourbon, 1/2 cup cranberry jelly or sauce, 3 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 cup red wine, 2 tsp butter. Pinch salt/pepper to taste. Drain oil from pan, and deglaze with brandy. Stir in jelly and mustard. Once jelly melts, add steak juices from plate. Add wine, and simmer till sauce thickens. Add butter, and return steaks to pan to finish cooking. Turn to coat with sauce. Season with salt/pepper. Add oven-roasted baby potatoes flavoured with garlic/rosemary, and complementary vegetable. The story of hot dogs: Every one loves a hot dog now and then. Whether it’s round the campfire at night, or at a barbeque, they are a tradition. It seems they’ve been round for a 1000 years, since in Homer’s Odyssey it states that “As when a man beside a great fire, has filled a sausage with fat and blood, and turned it this way and that.” It started as a frankfurter sausage, in Frankfurt Germany, and about 1860 came to America with German immigrants. Around 1892, a young boy was beside a sausage vendor’s stand.

by Hank Shelley He asked for a hot dog. A press reporter overheard the conversation as a sausage was inserted into a bun with a dash of mustard. Meantime, a cartoonist at a baseball game drew a picture of a dachshund wrapped in a bun. The image caught on, and about 1890, a chap by the name of Thomas Morris started a franchise, and sold hotdogs. He was known as ‘Hotdog Morris.’ There are many varieties of bulk or packaged hotdogs on the market, from chicken to all-beef. Choose carefully for quality and flavour. The European sausage to the all beef/cheese flavoured “Smokey” is tops in my book. Anyway you look at it, anytime is a great time for hotdogs. Boiled in a pot, or on the end of a willow stick over an open fire. Preferably out in the bush, or beside the lake, to add a bit of atmosphere!

Each night on the news and weather reports, a camera switches to show mountain passes, so that the travelling public and truckers know what to experience going through them. Back in the late 1950’s to 60’s, our young BC Highways survey crew, consisting of Jordie Turner, Robert Spleiter, Kenneth Dunn (now deceased), George Suckling, and I stayed at the Peter Kiewit/Highways camp at Illecillewaet, working on the McDonald, Twin, and Lanaurk snowsheds towards Rogers Pass. The pass was named after Major A.B. Rogers, engineer in charge of the mountain division for the C. P. R. 1880-1885. Although Walter Moberly denied Rogers the discovery, credit still goes to Rogers. Looking for the pass, he went to the Illecillewaet glacier, then scaled Mt. Avalanche, viewing the valley of the Connaught Creek/ Beaver River. An American with a degree from Yale, he was described by J. H. E. Secretan, friend, and was called the “Bishop”. Rogers was a short, snappy little chap, with long Dundreary whiskers, and a master of profanity who continually chewed tobacco. Definitely a character, he wore coveralls with pockets behind, and a plug of tobacco in one, and a piece of sea biscuit in the other – his idea of a season’s provisions for an engineer. His equipment consisted of a compass and aneroid barometer. For his services, the C.P.R. gave Rogers a $5000 bonus, which he had framed. When Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, chair of the C.P.R., asked why he hadn’t cashed it, he said he wasn’t in the game for the money!

BERGEN, RHONDA LEIGH Aug. 26, 1976 – December 16, 2012
Words alone cannot convey the depth of our sadness at the sudden passing of Rhonda Leigh Bergen on December 16th, 2012 at the young age of 36yrs; her family at her side. Rhonda was predeceased by her mother, Ann Leible, and leaves behind her father, Alex Leible of Salmon Arm. She is survived by her brother Rod (Deb) Bergen of Revelstoke, sisters Deb (Eliseo) Butler and CarolAnne Bergen, both of Kamloops and Lee (Kevin) Holden of Salmon Arm. Nieces and nephews, Nikki, Heath, Brandi, Chris, Ashley, Kirsten and Kaeden. Great nephews, Kayson, Laken, Taven; great nieces Taylor, Avery and Adalyn. Rhonda was born in Kelowna, BC on August 26, 1976. Del Vaughan With great sadness we announce the passing of Arthur Delmi (Del) Vaughan with his wife Mid and son Darcy by his side. Del was predeceased by his parents and brother Murray.
Del was born Sept 1, 1935 on a farm near Saltcoats, Saskatchewan and grew up in the village of Bangor. He spend much time with his cousins who lived on nearby farms and in the Pool Elevator where his father worked. Del graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. It was at the U of S that he met his wife Mid, a nursing student there. They were married on October 4, 1958. Del worked for Suncor as a student and then full time for 37 years. His work took him to many places including the Canadian Arctic, China, the US and all over Alberta and BC. The family lived in Calgary for most of his career. When Del retired they moved to a beautiful home they built on the shore of the Shuswap in Eagle Bay, BC. The family wishes to thank the Shuswap Hospital, Home Care and Hospice that made it possible for them to be with Del. A special thanks to Dr. Venter and staff. Albert (Adalbert Ernst) Jilek
On Dec. 17, 2012, Albert (Adalbert Ernst) Jilek, passed away peacefully after enduring Alzheimers disease, with his loving and devoted wife, Johanna, and daughter, Christine, at his side. Born in 1930 in Vienna, Austria, into a cabinet-making family, he completed his apprenticeship in 1949 and began a much-loved career, eventually teaching his woodworking skills at SAIT (Calgary), for 13 years, until his retirement. His ex-students and colleagues there still remember him and the passion he had for his craft. Albert met Johanna in 1948 at a dance school in Vienna. They married in 1952 and spent the next 60 years together, sharing their love of music and dancing. They ultimately settled in Canada in 1963, first in Montreal, then in Calgary. By 1996 they decided to make the Shuswap area their retirement home. Albert leaves behind his best friend and life-long companion Johanna, 3 daughters and a son, and their partners, 5 grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces, a sister, other relatives, and friends scattered around the world.

It is with sad hearts the family announces the unexpected passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on December 21 2012 at age 89 years. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 22 years Ruth. Joseph is survived by his children: Lynn [Randy]; Dale: Ross [Val]; Glen [Jennifer]; and Dean [Jacqueline], stepchildren: Arlene [Sonny] Both and Richard [Helen] Christensen, twelve grandchildren and step grandchildren: Jacqui, Kelsey [Dustin], Erin, Allie, Jessy, Andrew, Matthew, Brent [Jacquie], Nicholas, Denica, Eric, and Marcus, eight great grandchildren and step great grandchildren: Cameron, Kyle, Conner, Kayden, Carson, Owen, Aubrey, and Heather. Joe was born in Cumberland B.C. and grew up living around B.C., finally residing in Vernon. He will be remembered for a long career with B.C. Hydro, inducted into B.C. Sports Hall of Fame for basketball play with Alberni Athletics in 1955, and of course his long standing golf at the Vernon Golf and Country Club. Joe loved to go south as a snow bird each winter when he was able. He leaves many friends and family far and near that will miss him. Joe was predeceased by his first wife Eleanor, son in law Ron Harris, parents and his siblings; Carrie, John, Etta, Lou, Marie, Harry and Madge In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Children’s Hospital or the Alzheimer society. Reporting to the Supervisor of Roads & Transportation, this position provides carpentry and general maintenance services related to the repair, alteration and construction of municipal buildings, fixtures and equipment as well as the alteration or development of municipal infrastructure including, but not limited to, sidewalks, manholes, and retaining walls. He/she may also direct various employee classifications as required. Requirements for this position include: • BC certified Journeyman Certificate as a Carpenter. • Grade 12 education or equivalent. • BC Drivers License minimum Class 5; Class 3 with air brakes endorsement preferred. • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications. • Thorough and current knowledge of the standards, practices, regulations, methods, tools and equipment of the trade. • Good basic knowledge of painting, finishing and concrete framing/forming. • Ability to perform a variety of skilled carpentry tasks in the construction and maintenance of municipal facilities. • Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy, tact and discretion in dealing with requests, complaints and clarification of information from various departments and the public. • Good understanding and comprehension of the BC Building Code requirements. • Good basic knowledge of level, transit and laser equipment. This is a unionized position with a wage of $28.67 per hour and the City offers a comprehensive benefit package.
