Playground in Bluffton becomes a reality By Treena Mielke The Bluffton Chamber of Commerce may have spearheaded the new community playground, but the spreading of the gravel was definitely a community project. The playground, which has been in the works for about four years, was finally set up last Thursday (May 15). A ribbon cutting and potluck was held in honor of the event. Despite gale force winds, young and old alike grabbed shovels and wheelbarrows to spread the gravel base. Dressed in a bulky sweater to combat

the wind, Irene Lovell, chamber president, was busy preparing the potluck and generally overseeing the whole operation, smiling all the while. Tim Aylesworth, Southern Alberta Territory Manager for Park N Play Design Co. Inc. was on the site earlier in the week. He said a playground such as the one in Bluffton simply wouldn’t happen if the community didn’t come together. “I’m impressed with how people come together to make it work,’ he said. “In a lot of cases projects like this don’t happen (if people don’t work together.)” The new playground, built on a 67 by

hand as well. “We’ve had lots of help,” said Lovell. Gail Cornell, who grew up in Bluffton and now has children who will, no doubt, access the playground said she is pleased to see it all coming together. “I’m excited for sure,” she said. “It will be great for the community.” Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin also attended the ribbon cutting and potluck on Thursday. “This is a perfect example of a community having a vision to do something for themselves,” he said.

Frank Lovell said the equipment, which was set up previously had to be removed as it was made of treated wood. Lovell gave credit to volunteers from Conoco Phillips for their help with the playground. “They have been really good at helping out,” he said. The driver of an east bound vehicle lost control Monday morning while traveling down Main Street, slamming into two parked vehicles and spinning them around and causing extensive damage. APN Photo

Fires and accidents keep RCMP and Rimbey fire department busy By Treena Mielke A quiet morning on Main Street in Rimbey was shattered by the sound of crunching metal when a vehicle traveling east lost control and smashed into two other parked vehicles. The vehicles, which were angle parked, were hit with such force they were spun around so they were facing the opposite direction. Fire chief John Weisgerber was on the scene. “For some reason, the individual lost control and hit the parked vehicles,” he said. The accident occurred at around 3 a.m. Monday morning. Firemen were again

called out on Thursday morning to respond to a call of a house fire on 52nd Street. The fire was called in by a worker who noticed heavy smoke coming out of the house vents. The house was vacated at the time and the firemen had to force en-

try in through a locked door. Weisgerber said he believes the fire to have been caused by faulty electrical wires. “No one was home at the time and there was no injuries,” he said. There was major smoke damage to the house,” he added.

The wind was howling like a banshee and slanted sheets of rain hit our tent, loosening it from its pegs, causing it to tilt crazily. To make it worse, myself and my two little grandsons had Treena Mielke camped on the edge On The Other Side of a mountain. We did this because we were risk takers and not really afraid of very much at all. I painted these word pictures of excitement and adventure for the two little boys, crouched in the tent with me, making the story bigger and better as I let my imagination run wild. The boys were captivated by my words, their eyes blue mirrors of anticipation. “What happens now, grandma?” they asked, shifting their little blue jean clad legs to a more comfortable position. “Let me think,” I answer. “I needed to make this as frightening as possible to keep their attention until it was time to get their pajamas on. In reality, we were sitting inside a plastic Spiderman tent in the basement of their safe, lovely home. Their mom was upstairs. In their basement, almost every square inch of the soft, beige rug that stretched out across the floor was covered with toys. There were fire trucks and dump trucks. There was a miniature kitchen complete with cooking utensils. A train, set up in the middle of the floor was ready to chug its way through mountains and valleys and very hard rock. But, interestingly, the boys didn’t want to play with real toys.

They wanted to be stuck in a tent on a mountain with grandma, while the rain beat against its walls in relentless sheets. They wanted to imagine! They wanted to shiver and be afraid. They wanted to be Superheros and camp on mountain tops and rescue people. During the course of the evening, I began to think imagination has to be the best gift of all we can give these little tykes entrusted in our care. But, parents and grandparents and all us adult type people who love these little people so much often forget about the gift of imagination. We just go out and buy them stuff! I’m definitely guilty of buying love. It seems my grandma heart just doesn’t have a budget and/or common sense. It’s fun, it’s crazy and I love it. Buying them stuff. Stuff they definitely don’t need, and didn’t even know they wanted. As a kid, which I vaguely remember being, I don’t remember much about toys. But, I do remember my front yard could just as easily be a ballpark or a football field, depending on the game my brother and I were playing. My brother, of course, who was older and

wiser, was a master at imagination and he taught me everything he knew. Now looking back as an adult, I realize how very clever he was. To dream when you have nothing, to have a vision that you are in the big leagues, when really all you have is a broken hockey stick and a tin can, is very wise. Sometimes when I think of those days I feel such a poignant longing to go back for just one moment in time to that field of dreams where my brother and I played hand in hand with childhood and innocence, it takes my breath away. But, nobody gets to go back, so you have to go forward. And, luckily it seems imagination holds true today just as much as it did, yesterday. And, if you are very, very lucky you will be blessed with grandchildren who are willing to travel with you to places where imagination rules. And toys are banned. One day soon, I will take them to my field of dreams and put them on the roster for the big leagues. I’m sure it’s still there!

Spring session wraps up with more PC leadership woes Last week wrapped up the end of the spring sitting in the Alberta Legislature – which lasted an underwhelming seven weeks. The Legislature won’t resume until October. Alberta has become home to one of the most absentee legislatures in Canada, as the PCs have gone from a party that governed in the interests of the province to governing in the interests of their party. Usually, the government pulls the plug on session early because of some contentious piece of legislation or nagging embarrassment, but this time it’s so they can hit the hustings for the third PC leadership race in seven years. It’s unfortunate that once again, the important business of governing this province will take a backseat to the internal leadership struggles of the PC party. As the party desperately tries to rehabilitate its image in the eyes of Albertans, important work on balancing the budget, eliminating waste and improving health care access will be put aside. Albertans have grown tired of this government’s internal conflict and inability to put the province first. The PCs have spent much of the

last decade dealing with leadership crises and struggling to figure out what kind of party they want to be. The result has been a steady decline the consistency and quality of leadership Albertans expect in their Joe Anglin government. The PCs used to be the party of good government. They are now the party of never-ending conflict. This session was among the most politically charged and revealing Albertans have ever witnessed as the PC party disposed of yet another Premier. As the drama unfolded, Albertans witnessed a governing dynasty crumble before their eyes, with cabinet ministers at each other’s throats, MLAs quitting caucus and open challenges to government leadership almost daily. Never before have Albertans had a clearer

look at just how deep the culture of entitlement runs inside the governing party. Now, once again, the PCs will attempt another makeover to convince Albertans that they have changed by picking a new leader. Every insider candidate will claim to be an outsider. And the outsider candidate will have all the insiders on his side. I don’t think Albertans will be fooled. This is a party that has lost the moral authority to govern – and it’s never been more obvious. Over the next weeks and months – while the PCs sort out their leadership problems – Wildrose will be putting forward positive policy solutions to the issues Alberta faces. The contrast will be sharp: Continue on with a broken political dynasty that can’t figure itself out or start fresh with a new government that is focused on the future. As your MLA for Rimbey - Rocky Mountain House - Sundre, I value your feedback. Contact my office at (403) 638-5025, follow me on Twitter @joeanglin2, or find me on Facebook.

Rimbey Lions members Joyce Tona and Don Bresnahan share a laugh during the Rimbey Expo held last Saturday at the Rimbey arena. Treena Mielke Photo

Rimbey Expo well received By Treena Mielke A good crowd, plenty of participation and fun activities for the younger set made this year’s trade fair one of the best ever. Jackie Stratton, president of Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce said the Expo held May 9 and 10 at the arena went over well with great participation from local and out-of-town businesses and nonprofit groups. “It was 90 per cent filled. We had only about three empty spots. And we had a handful of people from out of town.” As well as good participation, attendance was better than last year, she said. “We definitely had more people go through this year. The Farmer’s Market was held at the same time and a lot of people thought that was a good idea and seemed to work well.”

As well as booths from businesses and not-for-profit groups, the trade fair had a number of activities for the children including face painting, balloon animals, a photo booth, bingo cards and crafts. “It is a very social event,” said Stratton. “It gives people a chance to get out and visit.” Rimbey Expo is important to the town, she added. “As a chamber we feel the Expo is an opportunity for growth in our community.” The Hot Air Affair held in conjunction with the Expo previously was not held this year, due to financial restraints. However, the hot air balloons may return in 2015. Stratton said the hot air affair has proved to be a popular event and attracted great turnouts, however, due to expenses incurred to bring the event to town, having the function every other year is the best option.

Drama class performs Robin Hood By Treena Mielke Tim Kelly’s adaptation of Robin Hood, The Legend of Sherwood, performed by Rimbey High School last weekend was a true showcase of local talent. The play, part of the dinner theatre held at The Peter Lougheed Community Centre, was performed

by a group of talented high school students, directed by drama teacher Shauna Murdoch on May 9 and 10. Murdoch who is wonderfully adept at passing along her own talent and passion for the stage to her students, said the message in Robin Hood still holds true today. Continued on page 9

Alberta’s Men & Women of Country Music Show showcases talented musicians By Treena Mielke From start to finish, this year’s lineup of Alberta’s Men & Women of Country Music showcased exceptionally talented artists. The show, held May 10 at Hoadley Commu-

nity Hall, offered the crowd a potpourri of country music, provided by great musicians, whose love of music was contagious and swept through the audience with a powerful boost of positive energy. Debbie Bergeron from Rimbey performed

Rimbey singer Debbie Bergeron and Allen Christie, a musician from Caroline performed at the Men and Women of Country Music held in Hoadley recently.

AT A PRICE I COULD NOT BELIEVE Randy & Cindy Sylvan Lake, Alberta

We had been looking for a new truck for some time and were getting worried that our requirements were going to be hard to get. I logged onto the Truck Ranch site and there it was. The truck that matched everything that we wanted and at a price I could not believe. We went in the next morning and purchased it without even seeing it. James was bang on with everything he described about the truck. The service (and the after sales service) we received from all of the staff was second to none. Thank you for a great buying experience! Our next vehicle shopping venture will be a lot easier knowing there is only one place to go! Thank you again! –2004 FORD F-350 2WD

Shirley Hartman viewed this year’s show as an “outstanding success.” “The talent was great and the crowd was enthusiastic, polite and respectful which made the whole event successful.” Fourteen-year-old Jaime Kennedy from Sylvan Lake won the rising star award. The teen sang and played the guitar, performing songs of well-known country artists as the late Hank Williams and Patsy Kline. Hartman said Kennedy was well deserving of the award. “I’ve had my eye on Jaime for four years,” she said. “She has a very powerful voice and it is nice to see young people accompanying themselves.” The men’s lifetime achievement award went to Alfie Myhre, a fiddle player whose natural talent makes people want to get up and dance. The women’s lifetime achievement award went to Mary Resek, a well-known country singer from Calgary. Hartman said award winner selections are not only determined by talent, but by how well 14-year-old Jaime Kennedy won the Rising the performers interStar Award. Treena Mielke Photos act with the audience. Although it is often a tough choice, she enjoys the opportunity. “It is a great pleasure to do it,” she said. Jessica St. Denis, Lou Paul, Allen Christie, Randy Smith, Shelly Dubois and popular country star Tim Hus rounded out the lineup. for the first time at the show. She enjoyed her time on stage and also was pleased to have the opportunity to rub shoulders with the other musicians. “It was great to meet some very, very talented artists. Reader says thanks to those who go above and beyond Dear Editor, I just wanted to take a moment to notice all the wonderful businesses and people in Rimbey and Bluffton. The other day I took a bicycle to town with a flat tire and was nicely surprised when the guys at the Integra Tire Shop got a new tube and fixed it up for me. This is not their normal business line I am sure but that little extra sets them apart and makes me want to find a way to do more business with them (with vehicles that is…). Bluffton Vet clinic saw me waiting out front for dog food and opened up just a few minutes early to let me in. I could go on and on with such examples. Seems to me the businesses in Rimbey and Bluffton certainly are customer orientated. We also have no shortage of wonderful volunteers who coach (thanks Wayne Sargent one of many coaches) and volunteer to help minor soccer. This all in addition to those

who provide extra-curricular activities for children after school such as the Art Club that ran all winter long and was a great success. Of course, how about Mandy’s Fashion, hosting a breast cancer fundraiser is no small task. I certainly do need to mention the Hoadley Hall Board who has supported my rural fitness group for moms with children by letting us use their hall three mornings a week to exercise at a reduced rate. I, for one, really appreciate all the hard working individuals who contribute to various fundraisers, hall boards and schools in the area volunteering their time for casinos and other events. Did you know that in some cases casino volunteers can ask for travel reimbursement or take advantage of free meals? Most do not because it takes away from the organization doing the fundraising, but it just goes to show that volunteers often give more than just their time.

NOTICE OF APPLICATION

Let’s all give a nod to those hard working people making a difference in our community both at work and in the community, giving without taking.

Thanks! You are noticed and appreciated. Melinda McLauchlin,

Musician speaks to students at Rimbey Junior/Senior high By Treena Mielke The students who crammed into the gym at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School weren’t sure what to expect from a presentation by Mitch Dorge, the drummer with the Crash Test Dummies, a Canadian rock band. It didn’t take them long to find out. Dorge, who came to the high school recently to give a presentation soon had the students howling with laughter and out on the floor performing with such props as a plastic chicken and a rope. They all had a great time. Dorge began his presentation by telling the audience that he was the luckiest, happiest person they could ever hope to meet. “I am a drummer and I get to do what I love doing and making a living at it.” He told the students he started out by playing drums on his dad’s head when he was around sixyears-old. “I was a really weird kid,” he recalled. “I had drumsticks in my hands all the time.” Dorge gave the students the Reader’s Digest version of a life well lived, recounting placing his feet on Russian soil and “ripping New York City apart” as a couple of highlights. His career has given him a great deal of satisfaction, he said, noting that it’s important to give you all to any job or career. “If everybody gave 100 per cent all the time most of our problems on this planet would be solved,” he said. Traveling to schools and speaking to students and making them laugh gives Dorge great pleasure. “”We don’t get to laugh as much as we should.

When you laugh, you forget about the hate and all the stupid stuff we carry with us every day.” As well as presenting a lively, heartfelt message and engaging the students in some crazy activities that had everyone laughing, Dorge brought home the serious ramifications of using drugs and alcohol. “I’m not going to stand in front of you and say drugs are bad, drinking is bad, you are all going to die.” The professional drummer said the students were intelligent enough to make their own choices about drugs and alcohol. He did, however, encourage the students to check out any type of drug on-line and read the stories about how one’s life can change in an instant because someone did not make a wise choice regarding drugs and alcohol. Dorge, who also spoke at Rimbey Christian School and Crestomere School is sponsored by Cooperators Insurance.

Higher livestock prices bring higher risk, says market analyst from AFSC Submitted As Alberta’s Livestock Price Insurance Program expands across Western Canada this month, demand for price insurance in Alberta is growing as cattle producers in the Rimbey area and across the province witness cattle prices that have been hitting record highs over the last few months. “Cattle producers are experiencing some of the strongest prices in history on their cattle, and they don’t want to risk losing that money if prices fall for some reason. That’s why so many Alberta producers are using price insurance to protect the high cattle prices they’re seeing today. Participation in cattle price insurance has tripled in Alberta over the last year because it gives producers

an Alberta floor price that locks in up to 95 per cent of the future forecasted price on their cattle. And it doesn’t put a ceiling on the price they can sell their cattle for if markets keep climbing,” explains Brenda Hagen, with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) – the provincial Crown corporation that has administered livestock price insurance since the program was first unveiled in Alberta five years ago. Now renamed the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), Hagen says the success and uptake of price insurance in Alberta was a major factor in the decision to expand it across Western Canada this spring. AFSC will now deliver the program – which has only been available in Alberta – to cattle and hog producers across the West on behalf of the federal and provincial governments. Cattle Prices Jumped 20 Per Cent The expansion of WLPIP comes at a good time, says Brian Perillat, a senior Alberta cattle market analyst with Canfax. Cattle prices have jumped about 20 per cent over the last four months – and those higher prices bring higher risk, says Perillat, especially for feedlots and backgrounders that buy high-priced calves and feeder cattle to place on feed or pasture. “Those producers have more money on the table than ever before. And with the increased market volatility that often comes with high prices, producers could easily lose a lot more money a lot faster if they’re not using tools like price insurance in today’s markets,” he explains. Unexpected Risks

Cattle Price Insurance Program (WCPIP). Schmidt anticipates that number could double because “producers are realizing price insurance is a necessary part of doing business. It’s bankable so they can take it to their lender to access credit more easily. And you don’t have to look hard for examples of how WLPIP has helped cattle producers manage their price risk,” he says, pointing to the XL Foods plant closure in Brooks almost two years ago due to E. coli concerns. “Feeder cattle fell nearly $20 per 100 pounds at that time, and producers who had price insurance were getting payouts of nearly $200/head,” he says. As WLPIP rolls out across Western Canada, there will be no changes to the program in Alberta, says Hagen. “Other than a new logo and website at www.wlpip.ca, it’s the same program Alberta producers have used for years to protect themselves from any risk that could cause these high cattle prices to drop below their insured floor price,” she says, noting, “We’re adding settlement indexes and coverage levels for the other provinces, but coverage and settlement prices in Alberta will still be based on the Alberta cattle market.” May 29 Calf Deadline WLPIP programs are available year-round for fed cattle, feeder cattle, and hogs. The only exception is WCPIP-Calf which is offered from February CANADIAN COURSE to May due to the seasonality of calf sales, This is the course you need to get says Hagen, noting the your firearms license. deadline to purchase Saturday, May 31, 8 am WCPIP-Calf policies Rimbey Prov. And while there’s every indication today’s strong prices will continue through 2014 – due to tight cattle supplies in Canada and the U.S., a weak Canadian dollar, and low feed costs – there are always unexpected risks that can come out of nowhere and change that picture, says Perillat. “For example, the Canadian dollar can be extremely volatile and negatively impact cattle prices. Or if there’s a drought or some other weather concern that results in a small U.S. grain crop, that could reduce cattle prices this year,” explains Perillat. “There’s too much at stake not to protect the high prices we’re seeing today with price insurance. That’s why we actively promote WLPIP to our members,” says Reg Schmidt, with the Feeder Associations of Alberta (FAA), an industry group that sat on the steering committee that developed livestock price insurance in Alberta. The FAA helps producers finance feeder cattle purchases through a Loan Guarantee Program. “We also finance WLPIP premiums with our loans so every producer can purchase coverage if they wish,” says Schmidt, noting that as cattle prices have increased, so have the floor prices producers can lock in with WLPIP. Easier Access to Credit About 40 per cent of FAA members enrol in WLPIP through the

In Memoriam The family of the late

HANDKE, Irene

Diana Dedul

January 10, 1934 - May 9, 2014

would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to neighbors, friends and family for your support through our difficult time. A very appreciative thank you to Dr. Weller, nurses and staff at the Rimbey Hospital for their dedicated care and compassion given to Diana during her illness with cancer. Also thank you to Oberhammer Funeral Chapels for their arrangement and help. We also would like to thank our friend Mary in the hospital kitchen for her comforting words, card, and nutritious fruit tray. You will be forever in our hearts. Mary and Ralph Dietz, Shawn and Dennis Dedul and families

It is with sadness that the family of Irene Handke announces her passing on May 9, 2014 at the age of 80 years. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Sonja (Bob) McDowell and their son Ryan of Calgary; and son, Gordon (Janet) Handke, and their son Joshua of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; sisters: Wanda Schwingel of Rimbey, Alma Segui and Terry Sereda of Vancouver and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents: Robert and Ada Look, husband, Rudy Handke of Westlock; sister, Elsie Bauer of Rimbey, and granddaughter, Nicole McDowell of Calgary. Irene Handke was born on January 10, 1934 in Lipini, Poland, the second eldest of five daughters of Robert and Ada Look. She was able to go to school for only five years before World War II broke out, but during that time excelled to grade eight. After the war she and her family were put into a concentration camp for four and half years and in 1949 upon release moved to Westfalen, Germany. Irene met her husband-to-be Rudy Handke in 1951. They were married in 1953 and set out by ship for a new life in Canada. They settled in Barrhead for two years before buying a farm near Bluffton where they farmed until 1974 before moving to a farm near Calmar. They farmed there for two years and in 1976 moved to a farm near Westlock. Irene and Rudy were married for 31 years before his passing in 1984, after which time Irene lived in Rimbey until 1999 before settling in Calgary. Irene and Rudy had two children, Sonja and Gordon, who were born in 1957 and 1959 respectively, and attended the University of Alberta. Sonja is the owner of Nikola, a boutique ladies clothing store in Calgary and Gordon is Director of Budget and Planning for New York University Abu Dhabi. Irene enjoyed knitting, reading, listening to music and spending precious time with her children and grandchildren. A Funeral Service was held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, May 17, 2014. To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca. FERGUSSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Fergusson after a long battle with Pancreatic cancer. Sharon passed with her family at her side at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the age of 65 years. Sharon was born at Assiniboia Saskatchewan and was raised on the family farm near Rockglen Saskatchewan until she graduated and then attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Art School where she met and later married her husband, Rob Fergusson. They were married on Oct.11, 1968 and lived in Calgary Alberta until 1976 when they moved to Rimbey to start an automotive parts store. Sharon was an accomplished artist, gardener, and rider. Her life long love of horses dominated her life and over her career she won many barrel racing and gymkhana events as well as becoming a well known breeder and trainer. She was the driving force behind the organization of the Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive program which has grown to become the largest stallion incentive in Canada, and was a life long member and supporter of the Alberta Quarter Horse Association. Sharon is survived by her husband Rob, their son Jason, his wife Leigh, and grandson Tristan. She is also survived by her daughter Alison, husband Pat Low, grandson Cody, and granddaughter Cassidy. Sharon was predeceased by her daughter Glenna who passed on June 15 2005 at the age of 31 years, and her parents Mathilda and Llewellyn Cartwright. Sharon will be lovingly remembered by her sister Elaine Johnson, husband Paul and their extended family, as well as her brothers Alois, Stanley, Elwyn and their families. A Celebration of Sharon’s life was held from the Peter Lougheed Community Centre in Rimbey, Alberta on Thursday May 15, 2014 at 1:00 PM with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Arena Fund at the Rimbey Agricultural Society, Box 1173, Rimbey T0C2J0.
