Pilot project helps transition patients from hospital to home

I

iNitiativES mEaNt to empower residents with care choices.

By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

New measures to improve health care are being put to the test by Nanaimo doctors. The Nanaimo Division of Family Practice, made up of more than 100 local doctors, has joined with Island Health to launch pilot programs this month intended to improve the transition of patients from hospital to home. Those involved say the initiatives are meant to empower patients by giving them more information about their care, from a hospital handbook to an expanded discharge summary that allows for the entire hospital team to write instructions. It is a “small test” of potential health care improvements by working groups dedicated to looking at physician satisfaction, improved patient care and a more sustainable health care system, according to Leslie Keenan, execu-

tive director of the division. Results of A GP for Me survey, distributed last year to gauge local health care challenges, is expected to help the division craft a proposal on how else it can tweak Nanaimo’s medical system. “The thing that would be important for us as a community is that we are looking at things always with an eye toward sustainability. It can’t be a quick fix,” Keenan said. One new pilot program will see 300 patient-caregiver handbooks distributed over the next three months to patients on the hospital’s first floor. The manuals explain hospital amenities and offer a checklist to help prepare people to go home, including how soon after they need to contact their physician. Lisa Holloway, Island Health’s project manager for community integration, said giving patients their physician’s contact number and informing them about the need for follow-up appointments can help prevent patients from being re-admitted to the hospital. “It’s improving communication because we know that’s

best practice,” she said. There will also be changes to discharge summaries so other hospital professionals can write instructions for patients and their family doctors. “Up until now we haven’t had that line of communication between the social worke or [occupational therapist] directly to the physicians,” Holloway said, adding communication only existed between physicians. Keenan said the summaries will give patients documentation of what happened in the hospital, with an aim of better transitions between hospital and home and improved care and efficiency. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Parkland bought without public process By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

With $9 million on the line, one Nanaimo city councillor believes the purchase of parkland should have gone to referendum. Nanaimo city council announced last week it had inked a series of option agreements to acquire 89 hectares of parkland in Linley Valley. The move was made in-camera and will see the city spend an estimated $9 million to acquire and develop five properties, including two that will cost four times the assessed land value. The money is expected to come from reserves. It’s a “big chunk” out of the city savings, according to Coun. Bill McKay, who says he would have liked to see the public weigh in on the decision in the upcoming election. He also wonders why people aren’t more upset politicians chose to spend millions of dollars without community involvement. “At the council level we are constantly talking about transparency. At the public level they are constantly talking about involving them more in decision-making in the community and yet we just spent $9 million behind closed doors and … very few people are saying a word,” he said, adding he

finds it odd. “Everyone talks about participatory democracy and if that had been a public works building up on Labieux Road, this community would be going absolutely crazy right now like they did with the annex.” The decision to sign option agreements passed by a wide margin at a closed meeting in early May, according to Mayor John Ruttan, who said McKay was the only person to vote against the move. “I don’t know if we had the luxury of making a commitment and then waiting for a referendum,” he said, adding the city had been warned that land was being sold quickly. The community also hired politicians to make some of these decisions, he said. Nanaimo city officials are scheduled to move forward on the acquisition of land in upcoming council meetings and amend the financial plan to cover the cost of the properties, the majority of which are above the assessed values. Hillside Avenue, a 47-hectare spread, has a $3.5-million price tag, which is more than four times the $792,000 the land was valued at this year. news@nanaimobulletin.com

District considers new field BY KARL YU THe NewS BuLLeTIN

Nanaimo school district will be looking to add a new playing surface as it continues plans to convert Cedar Community Secondary School to an elementary school. Parents expressed concerns about the playing field and in March, the school district facilities department was asked to compile a report on the possibility of a field upgrade. An update was provided at a recent business committee meeting. Jamie Brennan, business committee chairman, said bids on the project are expected shortly, with the board able to review options by its June 25 meeting. “[Staff was] supposed to report

on the plans for the field in June but instead they … rolled that project into the overall conversion project so that whoever is successful will be expected to not only do the conversion of the interior of the facility but also to do the rebuilding of the play field closest to the school,” he said. The total conversion project is estimated at $2 million. The school, part of the district’s 10-year enhanced facilities plan, will be renovated over the next year, opening as Cedar Elementary School in September 2015. Woodbank Primary School and North Cedar Intermediate schools will be closed and those students will make up the body of the new Cedar school.

Aakash Pawar, a 19-year old Vancouver Island University student, is excited to be joining Nanaimo’s first-ever mayor’s youth advisory committee. He was chosen from 28 contenders vying to fill one of a dozen seats on the advisory body.

Youths eager to participate From /1

The favoured dozen were announced during an open meeting last week by Mayor John Ruttan, who said that narrowing down candidates was a difficult decision. “It was really quite a pleasure to have a great response from the youth of our community,” he said. “[The committee is] going to give us on council an opportunity to hear input and ideas from the young people and I think this is really going to be something we’d like to continue indefinitely.” Aakash Pawar, a 19-year old Vancouver Island University student, said he was happy to get the call to join the group which is anticipated to have unprecedented access to city council for an advisory body. His family moved from India four

years ago and he said he’d like to be part of improving his new home and be a positive inspiration to other youth. “Really, I have never been a part of anything like this,” said Pawar, who has previously been involved with soccer teams and cadets. “Not knowing how to do stuff, that’s part of the excitement.” The council gets together on Wednesday (May 21), when it will establish a mandate and meet city politicians. Other members of the advisory body include: Alexander Cheung, Bri Odgers, Claudia Thompson, Coleman Kaps, Kent MacDonald, Mackenzie Cumberland, Madeline Shred, Malcom Beaton, Samantha Bishop and Sarah Lumley. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Ambassadors hold community at heart

formEr WorkErS continue charity endeavours. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN

Telus is trying to give where it lives. Telus Community Ambassadors clubs are comprised of Telus retirees, employees and their family and friends and involve themselves in charitable works within the community. Glen Husband, president of the central Island community ambassadors club and retired Telus employee, said in the 35 years he was with the company – he’s been retired for 10 years – there was always a charity running. “Since Telus took over ... they’ve really gotten involved in charity using the motto, ‘We give where we live,’” said Husband. “Wherever the clubs are, they have a Telus presence in the community and we try and support charities within that community.” The club supports the Salvation Army, the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society and also takes part in a num-

try to assist other charities around Nanaimo that are looking for volunteers. “By volunteering, [Telus] gives the volunteers, for 50 hours, they get $200 to the charity of their choice and if we do 200 hours, $400 to the charity of our choice,” Husband said. “In the fall we run a campaign called the Charitable Giving campaign and Telus matches all of our donations up to $10,000.” The Nanaimo club also hosts two free dinners a year at the Nanaimo Salvation Army’s New Hope Centre, before Christmas and after Easter, with comfort kits provided as well. The Telus Community Ambassadors club provides the food and serves the meal, while the Salvation Army does the cooking. Husband would like to challenge other companies to do the same. “This is a fabulous organization and they really need the help to feed the needy,” said Husband. “It’s not just homeless on the streets; these are people that are in dire straits.” There are 23 ambassador clubs across the country, with 11 situated in British Columbia.

the provincial and federal government and eventually the city will be involved, according to Halliday, who says it’s too early to talk about whether the municipality will pay for the build. “The first step before we talk about money is to talk about, is there interest in building it?,” he said. The city’s culture and heritage planner Chris Sholberg said he understands the society plans to make a pitch to council this fall, asking for a commitment of dollars toward the project. An open house for the proposed centre will be held Thursday (May 22) from 4-8 p.m. at the Port Theatre lobby. There will also be a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. on June 5.

The B.C. government has presented a formal apology for its historical anti-Chinese policies that accompanied a federal ‘head tax’ to discourage immigrants. “Today we express our sorrow and regret for historical provincial government practices that were once considered appropriate,” said Premier Christy Clark, presenting the apology in the B.C. legislature Thursday. “We believe this formal apology is required to ensure that closure can be reached on this dark period period in our province’s history. “The entire legislative assembly acknowledges the perseverance of Chinese Canadians that was demonstrated with grace and dignity throughout our history while being oppressed by unfair and discriminatory historical laws.” The apology ends with the vow: “We will ensure that this never happens again.” Research has identified more than 100 B.C. laws and policies that explicitly discriminated against Chinese people in the early years of B.C. They restricted employment, banned voting and property ownership and imposed provincial taxes and fees based on Chinese origin. The federal government apologized in 2006 and offered compensation of $20,000 to survivors or spouses of those who paid the federal ‘head tax’ that was in place from 1885 to 1923. After raising the tax to $500, Ottawa blocked most Chinese immigrants from entering Canada from 1923 to 1947. Clark said consultations with B.C.’s Chinese community led by International Trade Minister Teresa Wat confirmed the desire for a formal apology, but not individual compensation. “The community feedback … didn’t generally favour compensation,” Clark said. “There is a group that do, but I think overall there wasn’t as big an appetite for that as there was for a genuine apology addressing the long list of wrongs that governments over the last century have done to the Chinese community.” The government is allocating $1 million for legacy initiatives from the existing multiculturalism budget. Monuments or plaques commemorating the contribution of Chinese Canadians to B.C. are being considered for locations that may include Greater Vancouver, Barkerville, Nanaimo and Kamloops. The government had planned to present the apology before the May 2013 provincial election, but that was derailed when a leaked document revealed it was being planned to maximize political benefit for the B.C. Liberals. A staff member resigned and the apology was postponed. Clark said the government worked with the NDP and independent MLAs to make the apology sincere and non-partisan.

Port Theatre dusts off plans for expansion By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

Nanaimo’s Port Theatre Society is dusting off plans to build a multi-million dollar community performing arts studio. Beginning next week the Port Theatre Society will host a series of open houses to re-introduce plans to construct a $12-million community performing arts centre. The project was shelved in 2009 after the non-profit was denied $7.8 million from senior levels of government, but Port Theatre manager Bruce Halliday believes “the time is right on many levels” to try again. There’s corporate interest in naming rights, the potential for federal dollars and more energy in the Harbour City

around arts and culture than ever before, he said, pointing to the new cultural plan and Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation’s economic impact study on the arts. The building, an addition to the Port Theatre, is 19,000 square feet and fourlevels with three rehearsal halls and a small performance area that Halliday says would be more suited to smaller events than the current 800-seat theatre and cater to audiences seeking alternative, intimate spaces. The society also plans it to be affordable and of a calibre that would attract both international touring professionals and community groups. “This addition is being built for the community

New parkland appreciated Nanaimo is verdant and vibrant and we can keep it that way, and still be a thriving city. Council’s move to purchase 89 hectares of new parkland in the north end makes Nanaimo a better place. The transactions totalling $9 million aren’t yet completed, but there’s no reason to doubt the deals will get done and that a significant chunk of Linley Valley will be preserved. There’s an argument that a multi-million-dollar expenditure should have gone to referendum, but we think on this issue, council gauged the public mood correctly. Some taxpayers will see this as an instance of council again succumbing to public pressure. That doesn’t seem to be entirely true – these real estate deals were in the works for some time, and supposedly kept silent so the city could negotiate a better sale price. Are we buying at a bargain? Really, taxpayers will make that determination themselves. Probably we paid top dollar. Possibly other parcels of land are on the market, maybe even waterfront property that would make even more desirable parkland. We don’t know that, but we do know that the park we’re getting is, in its own way, priceless. The thing about urban green space is that there’s a finite amount of it. With developers bulldozing ever further into the bush, city council had exactly one opportunity, now, to claim this park. The chance wouldn’t have come again. Park-goers will be traipsing along the trails at Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park for generations. Our children and their children will visit, and when they do, the air will be fresher, the forest lusher and the birds more cheerful, thanks to our efforts now. And we don’t need to wait till then. We can start getting our money’s worth right now. It’s a lovely day, Nanaimo. Let’s go play at the park.

What she didn’t say was perhaps it was her way of helping comprehend what happened. A moment to stand in contemplation, to find a few precious seconds of stillness, like stealing away for a few moments in a chapel to light a votive candle. She never got that moment. Maybe if we weren’t there she would have. Maybe the victims’ families would have. Maybe Nanaimo would have. I found her experience disturbing, probably because Nanaimo still has the luxury of being on the periphery of a world where major tragedies and violence are a daily occurence – and the blessing of not having become desensitized to them because of their rarity here. But I can’t help think that in the crush to feed the media machine with every nuance of information, for something to say after the commercial break or to scrabble up and hold a position at the peak of the Google search engine pyramid, that we’ve lost human empathy for the people we’re reporting about and even destroy the story media came to report in exchange for a regurgitated package retooled to fit a predetermined, routine format. I think we all would have been better served by a more humane approach. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo needs new tourist attractions To the Editor,

Re: Timing right for hotel tax, Editorial, May 13. Early in my career in marketing, I learned from my mentors that being keen is good, but also never in the euphoria of enthusiasm, to ‘sell the sizzle’ before you have the steak. Let’s be honest and frank; tourism in Nanaimo has great potential but it needs development. We need to develop the steak, not create more sizzle. The new hotel tax is a good opportunity to develop our tourism industry. Currently we have a few good tourism assets but there is not enough in Nanaimo to keep visitors longer than a day or two in the city. And some of the tourism product in Nanaimo, is not market-ready. So what does that mean for Nanaimo? It means we shouldn’t spend our money on getting people here, but rather on creating reasons for people to want to come to Nanaimo, not

through Nanaimo. To make that change we need to work co-operatively to develop what we have. Add new products and get all of that at a level that is of interest to the travellers and tourists. New hotels in Nanaimo – fantastic! Keeping people in our hotel and B&B rooms

with something to do every day for three to five days is the next step. Those activities have to be wide-ranging to appeal to the different desires and interest of the visitors. Smile, Nanaimo, it is your chance to be in the visitor industry picture.

New hotel tax a cash grab To the Editor,

Re: Timing right for hotel tax, Editorial, May 13. How dumb do the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, Tourism Nanaimo and the hospitality association think we are?

Once a new NEDC tourism study comes out, alleging visitors bring $70 million to the city, the organizations then champion the need to tax two per cent out of the pockets of visitors. Trust the economic development folk to constantly come up with even more ways to scoop tax money from hardworking people, local or visiting. We must remember this is the same quasi-government outfit, largely taxpayer funded, that has given away our money to pay for other trumpedup studies claiming more tax money is needed to help the arts, culture and technology sectors. This is making me now embark on a study of my own; I’ve easily uncovered too many taxes are being charged and found we need to get rid of all the tax-gouging groups who bamboozle city council to lift cash from our wallets and luggage.

Boathouse should be businesslike Morden Mine deserves top spot To the Editor,

Re: Centre designed to establish new paddling district, May 13. Before the moving van has even left Nanaimo Centre Stage, I see on your front page where the president of Centre for the Arts Nanaimo is eagerly awaiting support from the city to help move ahead plans for a $5.1-million boathouse and paddling centre on city-owned land at Brechin Point. I read with interest, when built the boathouse society would turn the facility over to the city for ownership and maintenance and hopes taxpayer money

will then be given to a nonprofit group to manage the facility. Your article says the centre would cost a whopping $200,000 a year to operate. If the proposed boathouse is such a good idea, it should be easy for proponents to raise the money privately. Fundraise, buy some land, build the facility and manage it on your own like any good business man or woman would. I hope the boathouse folk are not banking on being handed huge amounts of taxpayer cash to fulfill their dream.

To the Editor,

Re: 101 Things to See and Do in Nanaimo, May 13. The 2014 version of this useful guide proposes a trip to the Nanaimo Museum as the No. 1 thing for a visitor to do. That’s all well and good. Two grand coal mine artifacts of great importance, however, are relegated to the also-ran category. One has to look very hard to find Morden Colliery

Historic Provincial Park (No. 87 on the list) and harder still to find the Colliery Dams, buried under No. 4, Go for a walk. May I suggest that in next year’s guide, our coal mining heritage be given pride of place, with visitors directed to the museum’s exhibit as a useful starting point, followed by trips to Morden Colliery and the Colliery dams?

Love leads to librarian career I TRIP SPARKS change for Jason Kuffler.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

NICHOLAS PESCOD/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Gabriola Island librarian Jason Kuffler has dedicated time to making the library a more attractive place for teenagers.

Seeking input

District considers reduction of number of trustees The Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) is asking the public for input on a proposal to reduce the number of trustees from nine to seven. Trustees feel it is timely because the Board has moved away from a management model to a governance model and therefore the workload for trustees has been reduced. Comments Written comments can be sent to the Board of Education, 395 Wakesiah Avenue, Nanaimo B.C. V9R 3K6, by fax 250 741-5309 or email ckelt@sd68.bc.ca. A presentation can be made to the Board’s Business Committee Wednesday, June 18 at 6 p.m. Presenters must register to make a presentation by calling 240 7415238 or email ckelt@sd68.bc.ca by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 13. All written input must be received by 4 p.m. Thursday, June 19. For additional background information visit www.sd68.bc.ca/News/TrusteeReduction.asp.

hen Jason Kuffler made the fateful decision to accompany his girlfriend on a trip to Asia in 2001, he had no idea that it would turn out to be the first chapter of his career as a librarian. “I like to think that librarianship found me because, and I hate to say it, it was almost like an afterthought,” Kuffler said. At the time, Kuffler was in retail management when he decided he needed to do something else with his life. “I decided that I wanted to make a change,” Kuffler said. “I didn’t know exactly what, but I thought education was probably the way I wanted to go.” So, when his relationship with his girlfriend, Paula, faced a potential end, Kuffler decided to quit his job and travel with her to South Korea for seven months. “She was going to be going to South Korea to teach, so we decided we would either break up ... or I would follow her,” Kuffler said. After the trip, Kuffler, who eventually married Paula,

enrolled in the University of British Columbia’s joint Masters of Library and Information studies and Masters of Archival studies program and rediscovered his love for the library. “As a kid I was in the library all the time but in my 20s I was more apt to buy books. I am not sure why I lost the library, but of course in university I was there a lot and so I found it again.” After graduating, Kuffler landed a variety of different archival and record-keeping positions with a handful of organizations, including the Vancouver Canucks and the RCMP. Last April, he became a full-time librarian at the Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Gabriola branch. He believes working in the public library system is the best fit for him. “I love to create, I love to innovate and I love to come up with ideas,” Kuffler said. Over the past year, he has focused his energy on making the library an attractive place for teens. He created a teen book club, where he has a handful of committed members and he also introduced Score With Reading, an event that features members of the Nanaimo Clippers hockey team reading at the library. “Since I’ve been

Make Yourself Job-Ready to Work in the

on Gabriola, teens have really been the focus.” Kuffler is frequently coming up with creative ways to attract teens to the library. He recently formed a Teen Maker Club”as part of a larger initiative to create a “maker culture” at the library.

I decided that I wanted to make a change.

“Essentially, it’s a do-it-yourself culture, Kuffler explained. “It’s the idea of making the library not just a repository for information, but being a creative space. A place where you can create things, which I think is one of the best ways to meet the challenges of the digital age.” Through the Teen Maker Club, teenagers on Gabriola Island now have the opportunity to build their very own drone. “When I mentioned to the kids in my teen book club that they were going to be able to make drones ... their eyes lit up,” Kuffler said. Another major challenge that Kuffler and many other librarians are currently facing is attracting males of all ages to remain

involved with reading. “Boys are harder to bring up in a culture of reading, whereas girls, regardless of socio-economic status, I think that there is a better chance that they will read more,” Kuffler said. According to a 2013 Pleasure Reading Survey commissioned by the Environics Research Group for the National Reading Campaign, 60 per cent of Canadians read for pleasure. It also noted that 53 per cent of women use the library compared to 44 per cent of men. “My two brothers, who are educated guys, are not big recreational readers,” Kuffler said. “It says a lot when you have three boys from a middle class family, where the parents read a lot, and only one of them likes to read.” Kuffler wants the library to become more than just a place for reading. “We’re promoting literacy but not just the written work. It’s information literacy, it’s how to find good information. Even social media literacy is huge, ” Kuffler said. After one year as a librarian on Gabriola Island, Kuffler said the best part about his job the impact it has on the people around him. “The most rewarding thing is just seeing that you’re having an effect on the community,” Kuffler said. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Band bonds

I

TRIO LEARNS how to deal with change.

By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

Guitarist Brandon Scott has seen a lot of changes to his band Yukon Blonde over the years. A name change, a revolving door of different bandmates, a location change and a change in labels. But despite it all, Scott’s two founding bandmates, Jeff Innes and Graham Jones, have always been by his side. “They are really dedicated people,” Scott said about his bandmates. On May 31, the Junonominated trio will be performing alongside We Hunt Buffalo and Tokyo Police Club at the Wastelands as part of Rockstar Motofest 2014. “I think we are an energetic band. I am sure we can bring some fun to the table,” Scott said about the upcoming performance. “I actually saw We Hunt Buffalo not too long ago at the Biltmore and they have a lot of energy as well.” Yukon Blonde began in 2005 as a small Kelowna-based band known as Alphababy, but changed their name in 2008. “It just wasn’t really a well-received name I guess,” Scott said. “We were touring with a guy named John Rae Fletcher, who is kind of a living legend in the Okanagan ... and he said ‘You know, guys, you should really think about maybe chang-

ing that name.’ At that point we had lost two band members, they just were not interested anymore ... so we just kind of reworked things.” Yu k o n B l o n d e ’s most recent album, T i g e r Ta l k , w a s released to Dine Alone Records in 2012. The Vancouver-based band is currently working towards a new album, which it hopes to have out later this year. “That’s kind of what we’ve been doing in between shows and festivals, is hunkering down and writing and going through a lot of material that we haven’t touched on,” Scott said. “I am excited to get something fresh because we are at the end of our album cycle now. We’ve toured that record to death,” he said. “When you’re playing the same songs every night it gets kind of old, so it’s going to be nice to get some new and refreshing material on the go here.” Last year, Yukon Blonde picked up its first-ever Juno nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year and said it’s nice to finally be recognized for their hard work. Although Yukon Blonde didn’t win, Scott said the nomination is vindication for years enduring plenty of challenges and changes. “It means a lot,” Scott said. “It was cool ... to get recognized is a huge accomplishment.” Yukon Blonde performs at Motofest in Nanaimo on May 31. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Is it legal to arrange a private mortgage immediately following GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP a discharge from bankruptcy? Yes. In fact, there is no legal restriction whatsoever on your obtaining credit of any kind following a bankruptcy. The only exception is that as an un-discharged bankrupt you must advise the potential lender that you are still in bankruptcy if you are obtaining credit of more than $1,000. Otherwise, you are free to incur further debt, including credit cards, mortgages or any other type of credit financing, subject only to the lender’s desire to advance the funds. Although a recent bankruptcy on your record will likely deter some potential lenders, credit standards in general and lender attitudes towards lending have become more relaxed in recent years.

mortgage brokers Whats happening with Mortgage Rates?

The Bank of Canada announced April 16th KRISTA HENLEY & 2014 that it is holding the benchmark rate SHARON FAUCHON steady. Great news if you’ve got a variablerate mortgage; the prime rate stays at 3%.The announcement noted that “with underlying inflation expected to remain below target for some time, the downside risks to inflation remain important.” And that “the risks associated with household imbalances remain elevated.” With these considerations, the Bank is maintaining its monetary policy stimulus. The next rate-setting day is June 4, 2014. Eight times a year the Bank of Canada sets the rate that governs each lender’s prime rate. Variable-rate mortgages and lines of credit move in conjunction with the prime lending rate. Fixed rates on the other hand are based on the bond market. Whether you are looking to purchase, refinance, or renew, we can help you decide whether a fixed or variable-rate mortgage will work best for your situation. Or you may find that a hybrid mortgage, which is part fixed and part variable, is better suited to your needs. Call us to discuss!

I have a GFCI receptacle that keeps tripping, what causes this? BEN MAZZEI GFCI receptacles are normally used where electrical circuits may accidentally come in contact with water. You most often see them in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and outside. A GFCI checks for an imbalance between the hot and the neutral conductor. They can detect an imbalance as small as five milliamps and will trip as fast as 1/30 of a second. This normally means that there is electrical current is going to ground, which has the potential to be a dangerous situation. A GFCI can also trip if the receptacle or breaker is faulty.

chiropractor Can chiropractors do anything about nosebleeds?

Many children and adults suffer from DR. KAREN MATTERN recurrent nosebleeds for no apparent reason. They may occur with some regularity for a while and then ease off, only to return again. Chiropractors have found that in the course of treatment of the neck and upper spine, recurrent nosebleeds often stop. The mechanism for this is not completely understood, but it may involve the effect of the autonomic nervous system on the mucous membranes of the nasal passages. If you or your children are subject to frequent nosebleeds, consult your family physician first to make sure there is no underlying cause which should be immediately addressed. Then see your chiropractor, who can tell you whether there are any spinal problems which could be contributing to the problem.

I’ll explain why this is a popular time to DR. TONIA WINCHESTER cleanse and how to know if you may need one. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring time is represented by the liver and gallbladder organ systems and energy meridians. To support these organs often people do liver cleanses, which supports the rest of the body by decreasing toxicity. How to know if you need a cleanse? Here are some common symptoms: headaches, skin rashes or acne, trouble losing weight, fatigue, trouble concentrating, painful periods and more. For safety reasons, cleanses should be supervised by a naturopathic doctor to make sure your individual situation is considered carefully. I commonly work with my patients to cleanse and detoxify their bodies. I’d be happy to help you reach your goals. Most Naturopathic consultations are covered by extended healthcare plans. advertising How can I make sure advertising will work for my company? Message: The essential first step in advertising is to figure out what message to send to your customers. Advertising is simply a way to send a message based on your marketing plan and sound business strategy. Repetition: An advertising campaign is a planned appeal to the client’s potential customers, using the power of repetition. The power of repetition reinforces the advertisers message. Consistency equates with familiarity, familiarity equates with confidence and confidence equates with sales.

DON’T... wait for your car to get really dirty before washing. Dead bugs, bird droppings, and chemicals from the atmosphere all leach acids that can strip GARRY ROGUSKI away wax and eventually eat into your car’s paint. If left too long, they can cause damage to your clear coat and paint. DO... wash as soon as possible. DON’T... use household cleaning products. These aren’t formulated for use on a car’s paint and may strip off the protective wax. DO... use a dedicated car-wash product which is specifically designed for use on automotive paint. Apply the suds with a large, soft natural sponge or mitt. DON’T... wash your car when the body is hot, from direct sunlight or driving. Heat speeds the drying process, making washing more difficult and increasing the chances that spots or deposits will form. DON’T... move the sponge in circles. This can create swirl marks in your paint. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the hood and other body panels. DON’T... let the car air dry, and don’t expect a drive around the block to do an effective job. Either will leave watermarks (minerals left after evaporation). DO... use a chamois or soft terry towels. DON’T... use a power washer the water pressure can embed bugs and rocks directly into your paint causing your paint finish to peel.

Nanaimo News Bulletin 23

Many people today are plagued with a variety of anxiety symptoms ranging from increased heart rate, profuse sweating, feelings of fear and foreboding, TRACY L. THOMPSON body pain, shakiness, burning skin, dizziness and many other symptoms. So why are we getting so anxious today? What is the cause? Some of it has to do with our fight or flight response within our subconscious mind. You see our autonomic nervous system will use our sympathetic response towards any perceived danger by increasing our heart rate, tightening your muscles, and a host of other bodily changes all designed to help us fight off or to run away from danger. But what if the perceived danger is not a bear jumping out of the woods but rather a car cutting us off in traffic? Or maybe you have experienced in the past a negative event, emotion or trauma and something you experience today triggers you into reacting with anxiety symptoms that you wish you could control. Hypnotherapy will help you to get your anxiety symptoms under control by teaching your mind a new reality and by providing you with mental triggers designed to help you change this reaction so you feel more calm, relaxed and in control. Contact us for a free evaluation and consultation.

How prevalent is hearing loss? The World Health Organization says JEFF CAMPBELL, RHIP that 360 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss and that a large percentage of people living with hearing loss can benefit from early identification and intervention. Half of all cases of hearing loss can be prevented through early identification. May is Hearing and Speech Month. Be proactive about your hearing health and schedule a complimentary hearing evaluation with a qualified Hearing Care Professional from Connect Hearing today.

As granite prices vary so greatly, is less expensive granite of a lesser quality? While there are different qualities of granite, in general, the price of granite is determined by the supply and not by the quality. Granites are quarried from all over the World and some are more plentiful than others; therefore, they are less expensive. More exotic granites, from fewer, smaller quarries, will be more expensive. When comparing prices of granite, we suggest being certain that you are comparing “apples to apples.”

If my wife and I get divorced and don’t do new Wills, would my TIAH M. WORKMAN Will still be valid and would she still be entitled to the interest in my estate that my Will presently gives her? There is new estate-planning legislation in BC called the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (“WESA”) which came into effect March 31, 2014, and replaced most of our existing estateplanning legislation. Experts’ Advice

Immediate dentures are probably the answer for you. To guarantee that your new dentures look natural and provide maximum comfort, an impression would be taken of your existing teeth. The dentures would then be completely constructed beforehand and inserted immediately following extractions. This method helps protect the tissues of the mouth, minimize bleeding, promote even healing, as well as help you to speak clearly, eat well and look great. Over the first few months, your gums and the underlying bone will be healing and shrinking. This will cause your dentures to become loose and causes sore spots. You will require adjustments and temporary liners called tissue conditioners. It is important to visit the office regularly throughout this period to avoid any harm to the tissues of the mouth. At six months after extractions, a more permanent reline will be required. For any questions regarding your denture needs, contact Carson Denture Clinic to book a free consultation. Yours in the interest of better dental health.

What is the difference between a Mobile home and a Modular Home?

■ REALTOR

real estate The main differences between Modular and Manufactured (aka mobile homes) are construction standards, materials and foundations. Manufactured / Mobile homes are built on a steel TIM WAIT frame and are normally placed on wood blocking, concrete pillars and sometimes on metal posts. Modular homes are built with a wood floor system and are designed to go on a either a crawlspace or a basement. Modular homes are built to Canadian Standards Association CSA-A277 (Canadian National Building Code) and are built to meet BC Building Code. These Standard Specifications can include engineered floor trusses, 2 x 6 exterior walls, 8’ & 9’ ceilings and primed and painted drywall. Building structural module homes indoors, in a controlled environment, resolves many problems typical of conventional on-site building. Both materials and schedules are less vulnerable to weather conditions. Tolerances are more exact and quality more consistent. Costs are lower and prices and completion dates more reliable, as the work of specialized trades workers is more easily scheduled and coordinated. Full testing of plumbing, wiring, heating and other systems before Modules leave the factory ensures every completed structure still meets the manufacturer’s exacting CSA approved standards. Deerwood Estates is a gated community and the Modular homes were built by Retire West, a family owned company with a solid reputation earned through 25 years of planning, development and management of Modular home communities in BC. Deerwood Estates is distinguished by quality in design and construction and is a Hallmark in tasteful landscaping and attention to detail in the development of streetscapes and generous green space. Call Tim Wait, know by many as Mr. Deerwood to view his many listings in this friendly village that offers a relaxed lifestyle.

Frieda Klara Kwasinski

July 29, 1926 ~ May 6, 2014

Frieda passed away peacefully at Dufferin Place on May 6, 2014. She will be missed by her daughter Liz (Ed), son Sig (Christie), 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Cone for his exceptional care, the management and staff at Long Lake Chateau for their kindness to Mom, and the caring staff at Dufferin Place for their compassionate care. No Service by Frieda’s request.

BOYD, May Elizabeth July 21, 1915 - May 14, 2014

It was with great sadness that we said goodbye to our dear mum May Boyd on May 14, 2014. May Elizabeth Boyd was born in Nanaimo on July 21, 1915 and was just shy of her 99th birthday. May was predeceased by her husband Orville in 1980, her sister Nellie in 2008 and her eldest son James Neil in 2003. She leaves behind her younger son Orville (Ruth), her daughter-in-law Penny and her much loved granddaughter Danielle. She also leaves behind her niece Diane Dow, nephew Douglas Platt, great nephews Harry and Rob (Andrea) Dow and two great great nieces Emma and Brynna Dow. Mum graduated as an R.N. from Royal Columbian Hospital in 1936, nursed for several years in Nanaimo, later returning to work in the Nanaimo Indian Hospital, and Coqualeetza Hospital in Sardis. She finished her career at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver. Following her retirement, mum enjoyed spending time with her family and in her garden with her special buddy Brandy. She also enjoyed holidays in Europe, Australia and Asia. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful staff at Keeping House who cared for mum over the past 3 years, to Dr. Lane her family physician of many years and finally to the angels in palliative care at NRGH. There will be a graveside service at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens on May 20th at 1:00 pm for close friends and family. No flowers by request but donations to the SPCA in honour of her beloved Brandy will be greatly appreciated. First Memorial Funeral Services 250-754-8333

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 No matter how challenging it may be, slow down and give yourself time to reflect, Aries. You’re always on the go, but it’s important to slow down every now and then. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, steer clear of added responsibilities this week, as you already have enough on your plate. Some alone time might be worth its weight in gold. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 You’re not easily overwhelmed by intense people or things, Gemini. Use this resilience to sail through a particularly challenging task that gets sent your way this week. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 There is no need to figure out all of the answers in the next few days, Cancer. If something is on your mind, then take your time to weigh all of your options. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 It could be challenging to be playful and lighthearted this week, Leo. Take every situation seriously and give ample thought to each and every decision you must make.

Libra

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Capricorn

Aquarius

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Make the best of a delicate situation at work, Virgo. Although you may not be ready for more responsibility, your reaction will be noticed by your bosses.

Pisces

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, hold tight to your beliefs this week and don’t let anyone sway your opinion. You will serve as an example to others who bend whichever way the wind blows. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you may not have all of the solutions, but rest assured that you have been moving in the right direction. An interesting conversation illuminates the situation. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 You have gained a new sense of purpose, Sagittarius, and you’re ready to put some of your plan into action. Expect a few raised eyebrows, but most people will be receptive. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you are ready for a well-deserved vacation or retreat. But you cannot run away from your responsibilities this week. Just hold out a little longer. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Your finances seem to be a constant source of aggravation, Aquarius. This week you are ready to take care of business and hammer out a foolproof budget. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, your energy level will be quite high, making it vital for you to do something productive before your stamina slows down.

Timbermen, Shamrocks renew rivalry

Long weekend delays scores The long weekend might have been an enjoyable few days, but it caused some problems in the sports section. Due to early deadlines over the Victoria Day weekend, sports scores from the past few days were not available at press time. This weekend’s biggest game was the Western Lacrosse Association season opener on the mainland Sunday, with the Nanaimo Timbermen taking on the Maple Ridge Burrards. Please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com/ sports or pick up Thursday’s print issue of the Bulletin.

SR. A LACROSSE team to hold home opener tonight (May 20) at Frank Crane. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

There’s no one the Nanaimo Timbermen would rather face in their home opener than the Victoria Shamrocks. The senior A T-men will roll out the welcome mat for fans tonight (May 20) at Frank Crane Arena, but they’ll try to make the Shamrocks feel unwelcome. “We always have pretty good, intense games against Victoria. A lot of intensity, a lot of back-and-forth action,” said Graham Palmer, T-men captain. “I’m not sure what their team looks like this year, but we’ll be ready for them.” The Shamrocks are expected to have a different sort of roster than a year ago, but they’re still the reigning Western Lacrosse Association champions. “They’re going to come in with a little bit of swagger and we’re going to try to wipe that swagger off of them and show them that we’ve improved and that we’re not going to be a pushover,” said Kaleb Toth, coach of the T-men. He played for both teams during his WLA career and understands what these games mean. “Nanaimo and Victoria don’t get along in any sport, whether it’s hockey, lacrosse, football,” he said. “It’s an Island rivalry and I don’t expect anything different.” Cayle Ratcliff of the T-men is expecting a “battle” game, with chances at both ends and hard hitting. “They don’t like us; we don’t like them, so it should be a good one,” he said. “Guys are excited to get their first home game under their belt and hopefully the community will come out and support us and we’ll give them the best product we can on the floor.” GAME ON … The Timbermen and Shamrocks play at 7 p.m. tonight at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets at the door. Children 12 and under wearing a lacrosse jersey will be admitted free. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Kabel Atwall, V.I. Raiders president, and Brian Ridgeway, the team’s coach, are trying to build momentum for the football club’s 10th-anniversary season in the Canadian Junior Football League.

Raiders want community to share special season BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The V.I. Raiders are embarking on their 10thanniversary season. It’s the perfect time, in their minds, to remind their fans that the Raiders belong to the community. The Canadian Junior Football League club has a new coach, park upgrades on the way and a snazzy 10thanniversary logo. What they want now is more people to join their team. Kabel Atwall, the club’s new president, said some people think the Raiders are a privately owned team but that’s not the case. As a society, the Vancouver Island Raiders are shared by everyone. “We’ve always operated

as a team before; now we’re starting to operate as an organization … We’re not this closed little circle,” Atwall said. “We need to change that profile and we’re wanting to change that profile and we’re working to change that profile.” Over 10 years, the Raiders have built a fan base, and they want those fans to be aware that they can be part of the team. “We don’t want to blow our horns, but we’ve done a lot for raising the profile of the community and we want to involve the community a bit more,” Atwall said. The V.I. club is seeking season ticket holders, of course, but also society members and volunteers. There are opportunities to help with game-day opera-

tions, fundraising, community relations and more. Any new blood, new ideas and new energy can help the Raiders grow, said Brian Ridgeway, the team’s coach. “There’s lots of room for people to come on board…” he said. “We have to increase our ties to the community before we can do more for the on-field football product.” It’s an interesting time for the Raiders. They have 10 years of history, and are transitioning into the next 10 and beyond. They want to make a big deal out of their 10th season. They’re putting together an alumni association and are planning homecoming celebrations for their home opener on Aug. 16.

Clippers add Sharks choice The Nanaimo Clippers have added a bona fide NHL prospect. The Clippers announced last week the signing of Jake Jackson, a 20-year-old who was a seventhround draft choice of the San Jose Sharks in 2013. The six-foot, 190pound forward played with Des Moines of the United States Hockey League last season. Jackson has already secured an NCAA scholarship with the Michigan Tech Huskies. “He will add great speed and skill to our forward group. We believe Jake will have an immediate offensive impact and be an exciting player for our fans to watch,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers general manager, in a press release.

Football team motivated From /29

The season ticket launch has been delayed since the Raiders don’t know how their new bleachers will be numbered, but they’re beginning to envision how game days might look at a renovated Caledonia Park. “We’re interested to find out,” Kabel Atwall said. “Part of it is going to be how the stands are set up. I think it will probably be more inclusive, everybody mixing a little bit more. We’re going to make it as good an experience as we can.” The Raiders are expected to win and motivated to win, as always. Brian Ridgeway said the on-field product “will not drop at all,” and said things are looking really good. What will fill the new stands? Well, football is an exciting sport to begin with, Ridgeway said, and wins and good competition help. “The difference between a well-thought-out game plan and executed game compared to one that isn’t is very obvious,” said the coach. “It looks polished and runs smoothly and the hits are loud and the catches are spectacular – that’s by design, because things are going right. “When everything is rolling and tight, it’s awesome.” Whether fans join the team or fill the stands, they’ll be part of a mileston season and maybe, something special. dian Bowl will be in B.C. in 2014 and the Raiders just happen to be making park improvements to get playoff-ready. Football season is months away, but the Raiders are brimming with excitement. They can’t wait for their 10th-anniversary season because they’ve experienced 10 great years since they first started out such a long time ago, such a short time ago. “It seems like it was yesterday, man,” said Karim Maher, assistant coach. “It’s amazing how it flies.” GRID BITS … To learn more, please search for the V.I. Curling rink gets major tournament These curlers know their stuff, and Nanaimo sports fans will get to see that first-hand. Curl B.C. announced this week that the Nanaimo Curling Centre will host the 2015 B.C. Masters Curling Championships. Sixteen teams, including zone champions, will gather in early March for the week-long event. “We look forward to showcasing our facility and the city of Nanaimo,” said Denise Wood, curling centre manager, in a press release. “We have a lot of fun with the masters. They really enjoy the social aspect of the game. They’re still competitive, but at the same time they are not cutthroat; they want to have a good time.” Two Nanaimo women, Zorka Smith and Eilene Mitton, were provincial masters champions this past season.

First Nations soccer teams will play for pride, prizes Soccer will bring people together this week in Nanaimo. The Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre is hosting a major tournament, Nations Coming Together, for First Nations adults and youths. “We’re wanting to really promote sportsmanship and build-

ing community and and healthy lifestyle,” said Mariah Robinson, tourney coordinator. The tournament offers cash prizes to attract teams and help them with travel costs. The champions in the men’s and women’s division win $1,500

each, and the most sportsmanlike teams get $1,000. Any profits from the event go to aboriginal youth soccer. Robinson has played in these sorts of tournaments since she was 12, and said there’s a lot of pride in taking the pitch.

“You’re representing your nation because all the teams are from small reserves or a compilation of these nations,” she said. “So playing for them and representing your community … there’s such a nation and tribal pride behind it.”

GAME ON … The tournament begins May 23. The youth division finals start at 3 p.m. May 24 at Merle Logan Field. On Sunday at Merle Logan, the women’s final is at 1 p.m. and the men’s final is at 3 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Pirates trying to stay sharp There haven’t been enough ball games so far in baseball season and the Nanaimo Pirates would like to be a bit busier. The B.C. Premier Baseball League team competed at the B.C.’s Best tournament in Parksville this past weekend, but much of May’s schedule before that was filled with weather woes. A mainland trip the first weekend of the month was rained out, and then the following weekend, snowy highways scared the Pirates away from an Alberta tournament. “It’s been difficult because baseball’s such a repetitious game and you want to play as many games as possible to keep guys fresh with their at-bats and all over the field,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. The team scrimmaged at practice to try to replicate game situations, but it isn’t the same. The Pirates were definitely looking forward to the B.C.’s Best tourney and trying to defend their title, Rogers said. “ We ’ v e never missed a Parksville tournament,” he said. “We pencil it in on our calender early, we know it’s coming and the boys look forward to it.” The games don’t count in the standings, but it’s an opportunity for players to get in a rhythm. “We can get everybody in, get everybody at-bats and hopefully they come out of it better going back into the league,” Rogers said. GAME ON … The Pirates travel to play the Okanagan Athletics in Kelowna this Saturday (May 24) and Sunday. Nanaim o ’s n e x t h o m e games are June 1 when the Vancouver Cannons visit. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
