A model float plane will grace the entrance to the city’s northern end if the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association gets its way. The group wants to spruce up the entrance to Campbellton off the Inland Island Highway. Brian Shaw, chair of the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association, said there is room for a model plane on the north side of the pond along the highway, across the road from the Eagles Hall. “We have researched and located a number of examples of float planes that have been fixed to a static structure,” Shaw told council May 13. “We’re considering a float plane for the area. We’ve looked at Norsemen planes from various areas. It’s going to be fun. It’s an interesting project.” The group is having a difficult time, though, trying to find the right pieces. Filmmakers to give a hand up to Habitat

CAMPBELL RIVER RIVER MIRROR MIRROR || WEDNESDAY, WEDNESDAY, MAY MAY 21, 21, 2014 2014 22 || CAMPBELL

When construction begins this September on the city’s second Habitat For Humanity home, a dozen filmmakers and animators will be lending hand both locally and internationally. “This is a great opportunity and I really hope we can do something fantastic here,” says Jericca Cleland. The Vancouver-based film director, writer and cinematographer is the woman behind Team Generous Canada which will produce its very first short film in Campbell River.

It will be an animated short, about two minutes long, that will act as public service announcement for Habitat For Humanity that can be viewed on a variety of media platforms. “We’re going to use our filmmaking skills to wield a hammer to promote change,” says Cleland, speaking to the Young Professionals of Campbell River and members of Rivercorp on May 8. With the scent of fermentation in the air, the group gathered at the Shelter Point Distillery to discuss the project that is coming here due to the efforts of the Campbell

River Creative Industries Council. “I think Team Generous can flourish more in a place like Campbell River rather than a big city,” notes Cleland, who runs her own film business, Twenty One Inc., in

Vancouver. Cleland’s personal connection with Vancouver Island North Film Commissioner Joan Miller is what first brought her to the area about five years ago. After meeting with like-minded pro-

It all seemed so important at the time, recalls Jericca Cleland. As a cinematographer on Arthur Christmas,”she was debating with several animators where certain elves should be placed in a scene that seemingly contained, “a million elves,” and that’s when somebody walked in the room and said,

“You have to see this.” It was March 11, 2011. A huge earthquake had just rocked Japan, followed by a tsunami that swamped the coast killing thousands. Cleland recalls standing in the L.A. production office feeling helpless as the images rolled across the screen, including the heartbreaking

scene of a sobbing girl sitting alone amidst the devastation. “All I could think was, ‘What am I doing?’ ” she says. Cleland was already a success in Hollywood, working with Pixar and helping develop popular edanimated films like Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2. At home in

Vancouver, she runs the studio Twenty One Inc. and also makes time for her hubby and three children. Still, Cleland knew she had a lot more to give through her creative and story-telling talents, and that’s what took her to Denmark. There she began working Frederik Villumsen of the Danish animation

fessionals, the result was the Creative Industries Council, a not-for-profit society that encourages creative development and projects. Cleland is on the advisory council and says the combination of the Habi-

tat home and Team Generous is a great fit. “When I started talking to Joan about Habitat, it’s like everything had come full circle,” says Cleland. For a two-week period, Sept. 13-28, a dozen filmmakers and animators will volunteer their time to produce the video. They will also spend their first day working on the new home. “We give families a hand up, not a hand-out,” says Deb Roth, Humanity’s executive director for Vancouver Island North, “and Team Generous is giving us a hand up.” Team Generous also needs some helping hands in the community,

particularly places for the volunteer filmmakers to stay and eat, as well as computer equipment and software. It appears they’ve already found their working headquarters. “Wow, we’re completely jazzed about this,” says Rivercorp CEO Vic Goodman, who is volunteering their boardroom to the filmmakers. Cleland is also stoked to begin and will direct the film, “This is a great opportunity. I really hope to make a lot of friends here and to do something fantastic.”

studio Norlum where Team Generous began. “Team Generous is founded around the intention to do good with our talents,” reads the website. Cleland volunteered to be one of a dozen filmmakers to produce short films in support large charitable organizations and to spread the knowl-

edge of the work they do. Team Generous has produced three short films so far for the World Wildlife Fund, Doctors Without Borders and Save The Children. “We use story-telling to change people…we can help shift how people think outside their normal sphere,” she says. “Each film is unique in

its style and execution.” The work was fulfilling and Cleland is proud of the short films, but still, she felt the need to do more, and that led her to create Team Generous Canada. And the very first production for Team Generous Canada will take place in Campbell River this September.

Watch for breaking news:

A huge “quilt” of Hudson Bay blankets, with hand-sewn messages, is making its way across the country to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s treatment of aboriginal people. The big blanket came to Campbell River on Friday where local people put their own stamp on it outside the public art gallery. The project “(Official Denial) Trade Value in Progress” was started in Sault St. Marie, Ontario by the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre.

model. Shaw said if the model plane does not pan out, the group has a back-up plan. “If the plan fails we will look at alternative designs which may involve a train engine, a boat, or perhaps a logging truck,” Shaw said. In the meantime, the association is also exploring possibilities

for a river access viewing platform. Suggestions include a long house configuration with a fishing float or parallel walkway on the river. “We have a world-class river running through our city, all the work that’s made it a place to recreate is not being used at all – it’s being overrun with weeds (and) of

course with trees,” Shaw said, noting you can’t see the river at all from a viewing platform that was constructed about severn years ago due to the thick foliage. Further Campbellton improvements include a banner project to put up banners on light standards, as well as providing support to the cleanup of Nunns Creek Park.

MLA Trevena floats idea of building public vessels in B.C.

www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

North Island MLA Claire Trevena is pushing for legislation that would ensure public transportation vehicles, including ferries, are built in B.C. The private members bill was introduced last week in the B.C. legislature by the NDP. Trevena, who serves as ferry critic for the Official Opposition, said the bill would nurture the B.C. shipbuilding industry, benefit the province’s economy, and create jobs. “If passed, the Provincial Shipbuilding Act would ensure that ferries, sea buses and any other vessels used by or for the public are built in Canada and have the opportunity to provide direct economic benefits here in B.C.,” said Trevena, adding that the bill would also see a provincial shipbuilding strategy developed. Wit h B C Fe r r i e s expected to replace a significant number of its vessels in the next few years, Trevena said having the Shipbuilding Act in place is crucial. “BC Ferries will be replacing 26 ferries over the next 15 years,” Trevena said. “If these ferries were built in this province, we would see tremendous growth in this industry. But this would require a commitment

from the Liberal government that we have not seen to date. In the past decade, we have added five new vessels to the BC Ferries fleet, and none have been built here.” BC Ferries’ newest vessels – the Coastal Renaissance, the Coastal Celebration and the Coastal Inspiration – were built in Germany in 2008. The Northern Expedition, built in 2009 to serve the Inside Passage and Haida Gwaii route between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert, was also built in Germany. The Northern Adventure, purchased by BC Ferries in 2006, was built and refitted in Greece. According to Trevena, a study by the Columbia Institute shows that building just three ferries in B.C. would add $378.5 million to the provincial economy, and result in $200 million in consumer spending and $100 million in taxes. “Instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the construction of ferries in Europe and the increased maintenance costs that incurs,

this bill would see that this money is invested back into the B.C. economy, creating good jobs for workers here,” Trevena said. The bill would also support an expanded provincial apprenticeship program with a requirement that at least 15 per cent of the labour

force be enrolled in a recognized B.C. apprenticeship program. “For every 100 jobs created in shipbuilding, 135 additional jobs are created elsewhere,” Trevena said. “This is an industry that B.C. should be proud of, and passing this legislation would ensure we are doing everything possible to help it thrive. I hope the B.C. Liberal government will show its support for good jobs and our shipbuilding industry by supporting this bill. I am hopeful, because it is a common sense piece of legislation, the government will support it.”

Six-year sentence for failed home invasion of rival drug dealer

www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

Court: Commits increasingly more serious offences Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The crimes keep getting worse and the jail sentences longer for Justin Upton who’s now serving a six-year prison term for a botched home invasion of a rival drug dealer. “He h a s s te a d i ly increased the seriousness of his offences over a lengthy period and has now committed very serious offences, yet still shows no insights that are likely to assist him to change,” said Justice Malcolm Macaulay during an April 17 sentencing hearing in B.C Supreme Court in Victoria. “Apart from a lengthy jail term, I see no means to protect the public.” Upton, 27, was raised in Campbell River in a home where booze and drugs were a way of life. His mother was murdered by her boyfriend when he was seven years old and for a time afterwards he was raised by his father. By age 13, Upton had lived in 17 different foster homes, but later lived with his grandfather until he was 22. Between April 2005 and January 2011, Upton compiled 27 convictions, consisting of thefts, fraud, property offences, drug offences, extortion, multiple breaches

of court orders, wilful obstruction, assault with intent to resist arrest and, in January 2011, aggravated assault. For the last conviction he received a weapons prohibition on top of a jail sentence and probation. Nevertheless, on April 24, 2012, Upton was one of three men arrested by a special police tactical unit who had them under surveillance at semi-rural property in Langford. That night, Upton was joined by Jacob Cappello and Cody Smith. According to Justice Macaulay, the trio was likely ordered by their drug-dealing boss to raid the residence of a rival dealer who was growing marijuana The three men bought a sledge hammer and duct tape to use and they also had zap-straps and two loaded handguns in a duffle bag. Smith drove and when they reached their destination Upton and Cappello both donned masks and got out of the vehicle. Upton was wearing a bulletproof vest while Cappello carried the sledge hammer. Their plan, wrote the judge, was to break in and rip off the rival dealer with Upton prepared to keep half the loot. However, as the two approached the residence, they noticed a vehicle out front and decided to call off the invasion. But as they were driving away, they had no idea they were already under police surveil-

quickly figured out his true identity. He received a 41-day jail sentence for the breaches and obstruction, and then in January, he faced trial for the attempted home invasion. At trial, the court heard that Upton blamed Cappello for the guns and sledge hammer, but the judge didn’t buy the story. “ Up t o n’s p r e s e n t explanation…doesn’t make sense,” said Justice Macaulay. “Why would he be the one to wear a bulletproof vest, don a face mask, and leave the vehicle with Cappello if he was not to be actively involved in carrying out the proposed home invasion?” T he ju d ge fou nd

Upton guilty on six of 11 charges, five related to firearms and one for wearing a mask during an indictable offence. He received a six-year prison sentence, but was given credit for already serving one year and nine days. Smith was convicted of two firearms-related offences and one count of obstruction. He is awaiting sentencing. Cappello pleaded guilty to some offences, but not the most serious gun charges. He received a conditional sentence and testified for the Crown at trial. In addition to the federal sentence, Upton is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition for life.

Our View

More effort needed to see the other side We’re curious where the anger comes from and how deeply rooted it is. We’re talking about the palpable distaste, even disdain that surfaces in We say: We’re not public discourse for “left wingers” or very respectful of “right wingers,” to the point where the differing points of phrases are tossed around like epithets. In the media business it crops up view regularly, usually in the context of someone finding an easy way to dismiss someone else’s idea or opinion. And we wonder: how can

this be fixed? Because it needs to be fixed. Certainly part of it can be chalked up to the media and its penchant for framing stories as conflict. Certainly it has to do with our electoral system and the way it segregates people into camps then pits them against each other in a dogfight for power. When you are invested in a battle of any kind, it is human nature to think the worst of your opponent. But we aren’t sure this quality always represents the best of human nature. And much of the responsibility for these adversarial relationships also needs to be placed on

the shoulders of individuals. How guilty are we of equating the distasteful words and actions of a single “leftie” or “rightie” to the default mindset of an entire group of people? How respectful are we of other points of view? How much of an effort are we making to see things from other people’s perspective? Rational thinking demands an open mind. Civil discourse demands civility. These should be things we actively aspire to. To do otherwise seems contrary to our Canadian nature. – Black Press

Online Voices ● “Salmon farming controversy...” – May 13 Patrick Moore · University of British Columbia It is very refreshing to hear that a fairly balanced piece has been done on salmon farming in BC. Greenpeace, David Suzuki, Alexandra Morton and many others have fought a mean war agains the industry for decades, claiming it is destroying wild salmon. Meanwhile wild salmon returns are on the increase, partly due to less wild fish being taken, due to farmed fish being available fresh year-round at a lower price because you don;’t have to chase farmed salmon around the ocean in diesel-powered boats. The salmon farming industry takes pressure off wild stocks (environmental), provides year-round jobs in remote coastal communities (economic) and produces a lot of one of the healthiest foods at a reasonable price (social/health). Kenny Gread We do not need a study to know that fish farms will not allow open public inspections of their facilities or practices and we do not need a study to know that there was a time not that long ago when fish farms did not exist. Why do fish farmers believe they have the right to operate on BC’s coast at the expense of every other commercial and recreational activity without any accountability? If this were not true, fish farms would allow regular inspections and sampling, by independent agencies, at suspected fish farms. The only BS here comes directly from the fish farms. ● “New lights a go...” – May 15 Garrett Sexton Another 4 way stop are you kidding about a handfull of people here actually know how to use them -

B.C. farmland holy war falls flat on its face

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

The NDP’s holy war against changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve got nastier earlier this month, as it became clear it was defenders of the status quo who were being mowed down. Ever since legislation was tabled to divide the ALR into two zones, with greater emphasis on social and economic needs to help viability of farms in the Kootenay, Interior and North regions, almost all the protest has been from unaffected areas. And much of it depends on emotion rather than fact. In the legislature, Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rose to praise the late Dave Stupich, who birthed the ALR sacred cow as agriculture minister in 1973. Krog likened Stupich to the Biblical Daniel for his bravery in preserving farmland for our children’s children.

Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley did his signature “jiggery pokery” routine, this time accusing cabinet minister Bill Bennett of being “giddy” at the prospect of paying off his friends with development land. Before he gets too jiggery outside the protection of the legislative chamber, he would be well advised to find some evidence. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who at least represents an area being given broader latitude for secondary uses on farmland, warned of drought in California. The history of this is currently a hot topic in the quasi-religious climate change debate. Meanwhile in the real British Columbia, life and farming go on under the existing farmland protection regime. The largest ALR exclusion in B.C. his-

tory took a big step forward last week, as a federal-provincial review panel issued its report on the Site C dam proposed for the Peace River. The panel noted that the dam would flood 2,775 hectares of farmland, representing all seven categories of soil quality. Opponents use a figure about twice that size, as if all the affected land was farmable. The panel accepted that this land, including the small amount of microclimate bottom land, represents 0.2% of the Peace region’s farm receipts. I would add that’s because what is farmed at all is mostly growing hay, which requires minimum capital and labour. “It has potential, to be sure, but its unique and irreplaceable contribution would be for those labour-intensive

crops like vegetables, which are not remotely practical in a labour-short region,” the report states. We have to bring in Mexican guest workers to get vegetable and fruit crops off in the Fraser Valley and Okanagan. For a five-month growing season in the bush outside Fort St. John? This is a classic example of the religious fervor that replaces reason among the southern faithful of the ALR. And how is the status quo working? Summerland council just voted to swap 80 hectares of flat farmland for 90 hectares further away in the Summerland Hills. The town is on restricted lakeshore terrain and the council wants to increase its urban zone, using the community need provisions that are enhanced by the

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Changes to what can be left in curbside recycling bins went into effect Monday as MultiMaterial B.C. took over recycling services from the city. New items that can be recycled include milk cartons, aerosol cans, aluminum foil containers, hot and cold drink cups, plastic clamshell containers, and paper packaging coated with wax or plastic. All other recyclables will continue to be picked up from blue boxes placed at the curb, with the exception of glass. However, the recycling depot at the Campbell River dump will be

expanding to accept not only glass but also styrofoam, plastic bags and film wrap. The Sun Coast Eco Depot on Maple Street, as well as the Island Return-It Centre on Willow Street will also accept styrofoam and glass under the new changes, as well as paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic. The green recycling bins at the Sportsplex and Strathcona Gardens will not take any of those new items but will still accept cardboard, hard plastics and metal containers. This will also apply to the recycling depot at the old fire hall in Oyster River for the time being. Koreen Gurak, manager of communications

for the Comox Valley Regional District, said people should do most of their recycling by leaving items at the curb in their blue boxes, and use the depots for items that are not being accepted curbside. “Residents who have access to a curbside recycling program are encouraged to use that convenient service for the majority of their recyclables,” said Gurak in a news release. “The MMBC depots offer a service for those who don’t have access to a curbside program or for residents wanting to recycle materials such as glass and plastic foam packaging.” For more information on depots and the recyclable materials that will

be accepted, visit www. cswm.ca/depots Residents can also learn more about the changes to recycling in B.C. by visiting www. recyclinginbc.ca The changes are a result of new provincial legislation introduced by the B.C. government that requires businesses to pay for the disposal of all printed paper and packaging that they produce. MMBC is a non-profit society which is tasked with disposing of recyclables from those businesses, as well as from residential homes. Businesses that are required to deal with their recyclables and do not sign up with MMBC or any other stewardship program will be fined by the province.

current legislative amendments. This was after a loud demonstration organized with the help of a fake grassroots protest machine called LeadNow, complete with slick signs and website. (LeadNow also helped round up anti-pipeline protesters this past weekend.) The media were fooled as usual, but not Summerland council. LeadNow has moved on to lining up people to

flood the Agricultural Land Commission with form letters and petitions against Summerland’s plan. The B.C. Agriculture Council, whose board first supported and then objected to the ALR amendments, has clarified its objections. It wants flexibility for secondary uses extended to the prime farmland zones of the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

WEDNESDAY, MAY MAY 21, 21, 2014 2014 || CAMPBELL CAMPBELL RIVER RIVER MIRROR MIRROR || 11 11 WEDNESDAY,

Council attempts to change a previous decision KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Council evoked a rarely-used power of council last week to reopen a decision made three weeks ago on a new seniors’ centre. Coun. Andy Adams said he wanted council to re-consider a motion passed at the April 29 council meeting that directs city staff to look at adding a seniors’ centre either onto or adjacent to the Community Centre. Adams said new information brought to light

at an in-camera meeting convinced him that council should also consider building a seniors’ centre on a city-owned lot on Cedar Street, across from the Community Centre. Coun. Larry Samson’s original motion, which was passed by council, was specific to only the Community Centre and did not name any other locations for consideration. “This is certainly not to take away from the initiative of Councillor Samson in looking for a

report for a seniors’ centre at the Community Centre but information has been brought to light that this may be worth a look,” Adams said. Samson disagreed and wanted to stick with his original motion. “The original motion never stopped council from looking at other options, that option’s always been open,” Samson said. “The original motion only talked about the Community Centre. But putting a seniors’ centre on Cedar Street looking out on a

back alley; I don’t think that’s the vision we want to give to the seniors’ centre.” Coun. Ron Kerr said the building would not have to look down into the alley, it could be built right on the street. Kerr also said he would hate to see any future plans die because council was too narrow-minded. “I have no problems with the initial motion,” Kerr said. “I think we should be looking at the Community Centre but I would hate to have staff come back and say ‘it’s

not appropriate to look at the Community Centre’ and then we’re back to square one.” Mayor Walter Jakeway felt the same way. “I think we need to look at all options and allow staff to have free rein to look at all possibilities,” Jakeway said. “If we’re going to spend a million dollars, it would be a shame to not look at all the options.” Coun. Claire Moglove, however, was in Samson’s camp and said for her, having the seniors’ centre as part of the

C ommunity C entre makes the most sense. “My rationale is that I do believe that by far the first choice is to have the seniors in the Community Centre because of the intergenerational connection,” Moglove said. “We have fairly significant seniors programming (there) now so having a group that’s isolated from the existing seniors group I think is going in the wrong direction.” C ounci l lors Ryan Mennie and Mary Storry also decided to stick with

the Community Centre model and, along with Moglove and Samson, voted against changing the original motion to include consideration of other sites. Since the current council was elected in 2011, council has reconsidered a previously passed motion just once before. Last year, Mayor Jakeway brought back a motion so council could reverse its decision to deny a bylaw amendment to permit a doggy daycare business.

to the community on behalf of the Recreation & Culture Dept. for participating in our public consultation during April. Our expectations were exceeded with over 600 surveys being returned Over 60 people also participated in focus groups

We greatly appreciate your support! The information collected is currently being analyzed and results will be released to the community in June.

1. Manage your student loan For the first six months, you don’t actually have to make a payment but interest will accrue. Find out what your payment will be and include it in your budget. More is better but make at least the minimum payment each month. If you are unable to make payments, contact the loan provider right away. If you have a Canada Student loan, you may qualify for the Repayment Assistance Plan. If yours is a bank loan, you may be able to negotiate temporarily lowered payments.

4x10

are deductible from your taxable income for each year in which contributions are claimed. Another RRSP plus: If you’re thinking about buying a home in the future, the federal Home Buyer’s Plan allows eligible individuals to withdraw up to $25,000 for a home purchase taxfree from their RRSP. 3. Save smart with a TFSA Start a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). It complements your RRSP because a TFSA investment grows taxfree. You can currently contribute up to $5,500 in a TFSA each year tax-free and get your money back out at any time, for any purpose, tax-free. However, there is no reduction to your taxable income for TFSA contributions. 4. Avoid high credit card debt Credit card interest rates can be 20% or more so limit their use, try to pay the balance in full each month, and pay on time to avoid late fees and

additional interest. 5. Develop a budget – and stick to it Include all unavoidable expenses such as rent and utilities and be mindful of discretionary expenses, such as travel, that you can control. By the way, it’s never too early to enhance these first five fiscal steps to your financial success with an overall financial plan that will help you meet your objectives. Talk to your professional advisor soon.

process intrusive and distressing memories, thereby decreasing or eliminating their disturbing effects. It also allows clients to develop healthy coping mechanisms in conjunction with their therapist. It was developed in the late 1980s by Francine Shapiro and originally researched primarily on Vietnam War veterans. Don Huestis and Mike Rushton, co-chairs of the Rotary Community Services Committee said, “We are always pleased to support our community and the people in it, both men and women, as they heal from trauma and move their lives forward.” Millions of people around the world have been treated with EMDR to treat psychological

For the first time in their 20- year history, Vancouver Island MusicFest has partnered with the Tidemark Theatre in Campbell River to present Back To The Garden – West Coast Roots Review, a fantastic night of music, and story telling. “We’ve stretched our wings a little,” says Doug Cox, MusicFest Artistic Director, “partnering with the Tidemark for this show is a way of recognizing the importance of our Campbell River audience. We have a lot of folks who volunteer for the festival from this area and many more who buy tickets. They’re an important part of the festival’s success.” “I’m also really excited to be part of this show and to be working with these great musicians,” continued Cox. “Most of us are old musical friends who have shared festival stages, shared open mikes, and worked on each other’s CDs. It’s going to be unique and a fantastic show.” This lineup of 11 stars was put together by legendary fiddle champ Daniel Lapp, who is known as much for his educational work via the BC Fiddle Orchestra and for a remarkable, globetrotting career that has seen him play with Maria Muldaur, Lou Reed, and

cians and not put them in front of appreciative audiences all over the Island,” he says. After a few phone calls, the shows were booked including one at Campbell River’s Tidemark Theatre this Thursday. So, who did Lapp end up picking for his stage full of stars? Let’s start with Neil Osborne, lead

singer and chief songwriter of 54-40. Although he’ll always be best remembered as the frontman for Tsawwassen’s most acclaimed rock band, Osborne is currently involved in an alt-country trio named Never Shiver. There was never any doubt that Cox would be part of this show. Over 20 years ago, Lapp and Cox used to play together and the always – impressive bottleneck guitarist is widely recognized as one of the world’s best Dobro players. One of the West Coast’s most beloved and high‐ profile performers is Mae Moore is also part of the show. A bohemian Gulf Islander Moore balances running an organic farm and heritage orchard with pursuing a long ‐ time music career. Another beloved fixture on the Island’s music scene is vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Carolyn Mark, who offers an ongoing mash-up of surf-twang, alt-country, and anything else that catches her fancy. From her own CDs to collaborations with Neko Case, Mark continually lives up to her 2000 release,

Yucalta commemorates Princess Pats with bench Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Yucalta Lodge was presented last week with a specially carved Cedar bench. The bench is fitted with a plaque that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. It’s one of 10 park benches to be donated to senior citi-

zens homes across the Island. The bench was hand-made by Princess Patricia association member Fred Raven of Port Alberni and presented to Yucalta Lodge May 13 for residents and staff to enjoy. The Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry turns 100 years-old on August 10, 2014 and the bench is a gift to mark the milestone. The regiment

was formed by Brigadier General Andrew Hamilton Gault as the last privately raised regiment in the British Empire. The Patricia’s – named after the Governor General’s daughter – served in both World Wars, and the Korean War. The regiment has also served in Canada and Germany and has been involved in several peace keeping tours worldwide.

Members of the mid-Island branch of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry regiment present Yucalta Lodge with a 100th anniversary commemorative bench Tuesday morning with Mayor Walter Jakeway (second from left) in attendance.

The city is trying to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our drinking water watershed. On May 10, city staff and volunteers hosted Waterfest at McIvor Lake to promote the value of protecting the watershed and the impact of common activities within the watershed. “We find most people understand the need to protect our watershed but some people wouldn’t know the difference that it actually makes whether we dump (garbage) illegally or whether we swim in John Hart Lake – which we shouldn’t,” says Luisa Richardson,

the city’s watershed outreach worker. “John Hart Lake is three to four days away from your drinking water glass. People should stay out of John Hart Lake.” The goal is to get people to understand how each small action compounds over time and can potentially threaten our drinking water. “We want to drive home the point how each person’s small contribution will make a mountain of trouble over time,” Richardson says. She said throughout the summer, the city hopes to host interpretive walks through the watershed, hold scavenger hunts for kids at McIvor Lake and set up an area on the sand

where kids can build their own watershed. “We’re promot ing good, clean fun in the watershed,” Richardson says. Fast facts n The city of Campbell River draws drinking water from a watershe d encomp assing 1,822 square kilometres of mountains, lakes, rivers and streams. n The water is treated and delivered to homes through 290 kilometres of pipe. n The city treats and distributes the equivalent of 3,410 Olympicsize swimming pools of drinking water.

Heart and Stroke Foundation seeks Big Bike teams to ride 29-person bike in support of life-saving research

The Vancouver Island office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation is recruiting teams to participate in Campbell River’s annual Big Bike event, presented by Dairy Farmers of Canada, which is taking place at the Campbell River Tyee Plaza on June 5. Local organizations are invited to help Take a Seat to Extend a Life by getting a team of 29 together to ride a two kilometre route in their community on Canada’s only 30 seat bike. “ This f un, te ambuilding event is a great opportunity to increase

employee morale and your organization’s visibility in the community and all for a good cause,” says Jami Christie, Special Events Coordinator of the Vancouver Island area office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Every seven minutes a Canadian dies from heart disease or stroke, and here in BC, someone dies from heart disease or stroke every hour. “Events like Big Bike allow the Foundation to continue funding worldclass heart disease and stroke research, advocacy, and health promotion that is improving the

These two trucks hit some incredible air over the weekend, including Rockstar rolling over once again, putting on yet another amazing Monster Truck show at Saratoga Speedway. Defeat Depression Walk to get a yoga boost www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

On these recent beautiful, balmy sunny days, it is hard to imagine that some people could be feeling incredibly sad. So sad that they withdraw and isolate themselves and feel too ashamed to talk about their feelings to others. This is depression. Depression will affect one in eight Canadians and is one of the leading causes of disability in Canada. It is also a factor in a large percentage of the more than 4,000 suicides in Canada every year. Barbara Swanston, a suicide awareness advocate, says society needs to talk about depression, openly, to eradicate the stigma it carries. “We need to open people’s hearts so they can open their minds,” Swanston says. “To make the UNspeakable speakable.” Stephen Fry, an outspoken advocate for raising awareness about depression says, “If you know someone who’s depressed please resolve never to ask them why. Depression isn’t a straight-forward response to a bad situation; depression just is – like the weather.” On Sunday, May 25 Defeat Depression events will be held in more than 40 locations across Canada including Campbell River. The 2.5 km walk begins at Robert Ostler Park. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., and at a 10:15 a.m. there will be a free, 30 minute yoga warm up led by Ocean Mountain Yoga to stretch out both body and mind before beginning the walk. After the walk, there will be a salmon barbecue for $5. Depression is a mental illness and treatment often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Yoga practices can help reduce the impact of exaggerated stress responses and may be helpful for both anxiety and depression. In this respect, yoga functions like other self-soothing techniques, such as meditation, relaxation, exercise, or even socializing with friends. The simple habit of walking outdoors, especially with a friend that you can chat to and a regular yoga practice are two excellent tools towards having more resilient mental health. Breathing deeply, focussing on one step at a time are what these two activities have in common.

Dr. Timothy McCall says in his techniques to teaching Yoga for Depression that “…our students’ journey out of depression begins with

a single step from wherever they are right now.” The 30 minute yoga warm up on May 25 will not require you to stand on your head or do a

backbend, unless you feel so inclined. It will be a series of easy to follow movements and yoga poses to facilitate good breathing and “ready to

walk” limbs. You will not require a mat and you can do the warm up in your runners. Those who register for the walk online at “Campbell

River Defeat Depression” will be eligible for some amazing prizes. “My deepest hope is that I can help to eliminate the stigma around

mental illness so no one will feel so ashamed, worthless, or hopeless that they complete suicide rather than seeking help,” Swanston says.
