Teachers across the province will begin rotating strikes on Monday as part of stage two of job action. Local teachers will man the picket lines in front of schools on Wednesday, May 28. “Last week, teachers were hopeful when they saw the government and BCPSEA (B.C. Public School Employee’s Association, the bargaining agent for the government) put out an olive branch by backing off the unrealistic 10-year term,” said B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) president Jim Iker in a press release. “But the next day, hope that this government would start negotiating in good faith faded when the employer announced a series of threats around wage rollbacks, lockouts and attempt to divide teachers, parents and students.” School District 51 (SD51) issued a press release on their website stating: “During a Rotating Strike Day in SD51; schools will be closed, buses will not run and parents are asked to keep their children at home. In the event of increased or changed strike activity, including a full strike, further information will be provided through the school district website, sd51.bc.ca, and on the district Facebook page. Your school principal will also be able to give you updated information.” Norm Sabourin, president of the Boundary District Teachers’ Association, said the rotating strikes are part of the plan which the BCTF voted on at the end of January. “Our number one priority is to come up with a negotiated agreement at the table,” he said. “Barring progress at the table this job action plan would be put into place.” The rotating strikes are on the heels of a month of limited job action in stage one. “We hoped that would put enough pressure on the bargaining table to achieve a deal at the table

Cusack guilty of hotel arsons CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
The man accused of burning down the Winnipeg and Grand Forks hotels in 2012 has been found guilty. On May 6 at the Grand Forks Law Court, Judge Fabbro found Christopher Cusack guilty of two counts of arson in relation to an inhabited property. There will be a pre-sentence report on June 12, 2014 at the Rossland Law Court for a psychiatric risk assessment. The fires, which were set on March 7, 2012, caused $1 million damage to the Grand Forks Hotel and $10,000 damage to the Winnipeg Hotel. In Grand Forks Law Court on April 9, Judge Fabbro ordered an updated psychiatric evaluation of Cusack

which was to be conducted by Dr. Hedinger at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam. According to an admission of guilt submitted by Cusack’s lawyer, Ken Wyllie, on his behalf on Oct. 1, 2013, Cusack had been drinking all day at the Winnipeg Hotel the day of the fires. The first fire destroyed the Grand Forks Hotel. The second fire was set on a motorcycle under a staircase at the Winnipeg Hotel. The two acts of arson destroyed the 100-year-old historic Grand Forks Hotel, while the fire at the landmark Winnipeg Hotel was limited to the rear of the building, creating smoke damage. Although there were no injuries reported, RCMP said approximately 20 people were displaced due to the fires. Both hotels have since been demolished with the Grand Forks site currently a vacant lot.

lessly causing damage by fire or explosion to property contrary to section 434 of the criminal code. Conn has plead not guilty. The fire caused extensive damage to City Hall. Conn, who has pled not guilty, was apprehended by Grand Forks RCMP close to the scene of the fire that same day.
POLICE BRIEFS
On May 13 at 7:27 p.m., RCMP received a report of a break and enter at a residence on Central Avenue. “It appears entrance was made through a window into the house between 2:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. the previous day,” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “Stolen was a new XBox One valued at around $500.” Police have no witnesses or suspects but Harrison said they did obtain a fingerprint at the scene and are continuing to investigate.
Car hits bike
On May 14 at 7:11 a.m., police received a report of an injury collision on Central Avenue and Second Street. “It was a cyclist/vehicle MVA (motor vehicle accident),” said Harrison. “It appears the vehicle was making a right hand turn to head westbound on Central when a cyclist coming down the sidewalk was struck.” Harrison said there were very minor injuries to the cyclist. “However, the issue here is the cyclist was the one breaking all the rules,” he said. “The cyclist has to follow all the same rules as a motor vehicle. They’re not allowed to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. They were failing to keep right. They were on the wrong side of the road. There were a lot of things that contributed to the accident. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.” The cyclist was giving warnings about his breach of the motor vehicle act.
Scooter stolen
At 2:35 a.m. on May 15, RCMP received a call about a break and enter on Industrial Way. “Some time between the 9th and 14th of May, people entered the fenced off complex by cutting the rear chain link fence and made off with a black and yellow Motoreno XPH scooter,” said Harrison. “The scooter didn’t have a battery in but it’s apparently worth $2,000.”
Copper wire theft
On May 15 at 1:01 p.m., RCMP received a call about a wire copper theft from an industrial property on second street in Grand Forks. “It appears five individual 16 foot cables which were attached to the main building to serve as semi-truck plugins were cut and taken,” said Harrison.

Lawnmower taken
On May 16 at 1:25 p.m., RCMP received a report of a lawnmower being stolen from B&F Sales on 2nd Street. “Apparently on May 15, a lawnmower had been stolen from the store,” said Harrison. Stolen was an orange-coloured 2014 Husqvarna lawnmower.
Boat motor stolen
On May 17 at 3:04 p.m., police received a report of a theft of a boat motor from East Lake Drive in Christina Lake. “The motor is a gray 2002 20hp four-stroke, short-shaft Honda valued at around $6,300,” said Harrison. “It was taken along with the gas tank. It had been chained to the boat and was cut off and removed.” No suspects or witnesses and the file remains under investigation.
Anniversary of man’s disappearance
A local man is renewing the call for information as to the whereabouts of his brother, who went missing from Kelowna under puzzling circumstances. Peter Hermakin told the Gazette it’s been two long years with no word about his brother William. According to the RCMP’s website, on April 30, 2012, Kelowna RCMP received a report of a missing person from a Kelowna residence. The report indicated that William “Bill” Hermakin, 49, had not been seen since April 26. It was determined that Hermakin had picked up his ATV from a storage facility and left with it in the back of his truck. “Hermain is under medical care and requires medication for his condition,” the report continues. Police located Hermakin’s ATV burned up at the Adra Tunnel on the Kettle Valley railway above Naramata, and later located his truck near the old Bellevue Trestle, but his whereabouts remain unknown. Hermakin is described as a Caucasian man, 175cm (5’9”), 84kg (185lbs), with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a scar on his nose as well as both ears. Anyone with information regarding Hermakin’s whereabouts is asked to call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

Cement the cracks Grand Forks is fortunate enough to get an Olympic medalist passing though town this week. Clara Hughes has won six medals including a gold, silver and two bronze in the Winter Olympics, and two bronze in the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. She is the only person to have won multiple medals in both. Those are amazing enough feats, but Clara’s story started much earlier than that. You see, Clara has had to battle depression and other mental health issues along the way. The main reason for her big bike ride across Canada is to raise awareness for those issues, which many people face on a daily basis. A lack of proper facilities to treat mental health patients can have devastating effects: drug and alcohol addiction, depression, anxiety, abuse, violence and others. The courts are full of mental health patients who “fell through the cracks” and were unable to receive the proper treatment. With proper treatment and support, Clara was able to manage her mental health and rise to the top of the athletic world. Be sure to come out to Gyro Park on Friday and cheer on Clara when she comes through town. In addition, be sure to urge your local government to support proper mental health care for everyone.

Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ The controversy surrounding Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, his racist comments, denials and subsequent explanations and apologies points to an interesting aspect of our human character. We are programmed to deny things. Or attempt to. Take aging for example. Is your hair turning gray? Dye it and deny it. Thinning? Comb it over. No one will notice. Sterling told his ex-girlfriend that she shouldn’t bring black people as her guests to Clippers games, but denied
that his comments were racist. No one has done more for blacks, he said in an interview with Anderson Cooper. Because he is an NBA team owner, he awards black men with huge sums of money. Black men like Magic Johnson have not done nearly as much for their own race as Sterling has done, he said. It is not uncommon for racists and bigots to deny their racism and bigotry. Indeed, according to authors Ajit Varki and Danny Brower in their book, Denial: Self-deception, False Beliefs, and the Origin of the Human Mind, it is not uncommon for all of us to be in denial because that ability to deny is the key to our success as a species. We deny our own mortality while being fully conscious that we are mortal.
That incredible contradiction allows us to go forward, Varki and Brower say. In order to develop intellectually and socially we must develop self awareness; that includes awareness of our mortality. But in order not to become paralysed by the idea of our inevitable death, we must at the same time deny that mortality. Otherwise we would just give up. Sterling refuses to give up. He possesses the capacity to deny what is obvious to everyone else around him. My cousin Curtis (not his real name) was like that. One of several black sheep in the family, Curtis was caught inside a pharmacy at 2 a.m. with burglary tools. He denied the crow bar, glass cutter, lock picks and balaclava were his. When he

When the judge asked him why he would have signed a statement denying that the tools he was found with were his if he hadn’t even been there, he replied that he had never made such a statement. It was all a conspiracy, he said. The police were out to get him because of his comments to the press about police brutality the last time he was arrested. And besides, the court had no jurisdiction because he wasn’t a Canadian, he was a Freeman. “I deny your authority over me,” he said to the judge and demanded immediate release. Association members are Dr. Ajaero truly ‘gentle giant’ shirking responsibliity Letter to the Editor: I am so sorry to hear that we are losing a great doctor. It took me a long time to even agree to go to a doctor. I finally agreed to see Dr. Ajaero upon my mother’s influence. When I entered his office I felt intimidated at how big this man is until he opened his mouth to speak. This man is in my eyes whom I call “A Gentle Giant”. He has a gentle spirit about him which is rare to find in a doctor in this day and age. Thank you Dr. Ajaero for caring about your patients. Thank you for listening to your pa-
tients’ concerns for their own health. Thank you for believing that your patients have something to say that is worth listening to. If anyone really wants to know what a doctor is like, then ask his patients. I for one do not want to have to find another doctor. We want to keep our Gentle Giant! He is a rare gem and we do not want to lose him. If there is any way we can persuade you (Dr. Ajaero) to stay, then please let us know? Lin Landry, Westbridge area

Why were there so few members of the Grand Forks Public Library Association (GFPLA) at the annual general meeting (AGM) on the evening of Wednesday, April 9, 2014? The four GFPLA members in attendance were in addition to six board members (one absent), the library director and a member of the library support staff. One of the four GFPLA members was in attendance because he had been elected to the board by acclamation. The apparent lack of interest in such an important service is troublesome. The bulk of funding for the library comes from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) calculated with a formula that reflects the assessed values of properties in Area C (Christina Lake), Area D, and the City of Grand Forks. Information on library funding from the RDKB shows that the budgeted amount for 2014 is $349,571, which includes a board fee of $3,571. In addition, an annual provincial grant of approximately $28,000 is expected. A breakdown of the funding by jurisdiction shows: Area C—$139,838 (40 per cent); Area D—$89,160 (26 per cent); the City of Grand Forks—$119,812 (34 per cent). Ironically, the community with the smallest population and the least service pays the most. The City of Grand Forks owns the library building and leases it to the GFPLA at a cost of $15,000 per year. In return the city services the heating and air conditioning units, ensures that light fixtures perform as they should, and keeps the washrooms functioning. Unused funds are placed in a contingency fund that has grown to $60,000 over several years. Are annual general meetings important? By all appearances the library operates well between them and they make little difference to the services provided. However, the meeting provides an important opportunity for members to be a part of the governance process. Members are stakeholders in an organization where a board and director represent their interests. Together they are responsible for a rather large sum of money. That reason alone should be incentive enough to take an interest. When membership interest wanes the stage can be set for unusual incidents such as the one in January 2009 when the library board and the librarian locked the unionized staff out and effectively closed the library for 55 days. Attendance at the 2009 AGM following the incident was a record 77 members including the board and library director. The lockout was not discussed but the meeting was told that the labour relations professional employed by the board had cost $30,000 for services during the lockout and the mediation that followed. The membership deserved an explanation but didn’t get it. Imagine how many books and other library materials could have been purchased for $30K. Of interest is that membership attendance at AGMs has dropped sharply since 2009. Members can show their interest in what the library board is doing on their behalf by attending monthly board meetings (third Wednesday each month at 4 p.m.) and by making the AGM (early March) a priority. Doing so is a civic responsibility. If members need a reason to attend meetings they might think of themselves as shareholders in an institution that spends one-third of a million dollars of public money. The library’s services add considerably to the quality of life of many residents in the east Boundary area and its services should not ever be taken for granted.

About a dozen participants took part in a workshop put on by the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) on May 14 at Selkirk College. The interactive workshop focused on a powerful new regional information
tool called the Digital Basin. “We’re here to roll out two of the major products we have produced over the past few years,” said Lauren Rethoret, researcher with the RDI. “One of those is the Digital Basin, which is an online community information portal. The other is an employment lands project, which is again an online
portal.” Rethoret said the employment lands project is an attempt to access land availability in the region and to help people looking for land to make the first steps towards identifying potential properties to help their business expand or relocate to the region.

NOTICE OF WATER MAIN FLUSHING The Water Utility Department advises residents that we will be flushing water mains throughout the City during the months of April and May. Regular annual flushing is an important component of a comprehensive water management program. Flushing water mains are done as part of a scheduled preventative maintenance program to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes and helps maintain water quality in our system. Flushing will take place between the hours of 5:00 am and 3:30 pm. As we flush your area, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please check your drinking, cooking, and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more) Utility crews continue their water main flushing program to ensure the distribution system is refreshed and healthy. If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at info@grandforks.ca or call Public Works at 250-442-4148.
School board presents balanced budget CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Schools in the Boundary area will not have to make any major cuts to programs or staff next year after receiving a balanced budget from Jeanette Hanlon, secretary-treasurer for School District 51(SD51). At the May 13 regular meeting of the board of education, the board approved the budget for the 2014-15 school year. The budget does have a deficit of $441,000 but that money will come out of the surplus funding from the previous year, said Hanlon. “We’ve been very conservative over the last number of years knowing our funding is not keeping pace with the pressures we face,” said Teresa Rezansoff, chair of the board. “We’ve been as conservative as we can so that as those pressures mount we have the funds to meet our obligations. So we’re using funds we’ve been saving so we don’t have to make cuts in the classroom; we’re keeping our staffing levels pretty much the same; our class sizes are very small; and we’re providing opportunities for our kids. So that’s positive.” Hanlon’s report to the board stated that staying within the legislation for class size, the number of divisions at the elementary schools will remain the same, even though enrolment is down. The board has added blocks at GFSS to facilitate a new Grade 8 rotation with a pairing of competencies that will allow students to have more consistent teaching staff throughout the year. Hanlon said she thinks the board will be okay next year with the budget but “things change because there are cost pressures we won’t know about. “We feel like we’ve invested in this next year,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to build and take care of some of the challenges and opportunities we see in the next few years. We don’t want to be
‘Mounties’ de-brief (L-R) Elementary students Riley Condon, from Rock Creek, and Portia Dagg, from Greenwood, talked about their experience as “Mounties for a Day” along with RCMP officer Cst. James Charles at the School District 51 board meeting on May 13. The students told the board that they appreciated the opportunity to participate in a mock scenario which included pursuing a border jumper who had stolen a vehicle. There was even an RCMP helicopter on the scene as the police finally apprehended the “criminal” under the Ingram Bridge and found a backpack full of “cocaine” on the culprit. Craig Lindsay photo
making any huge cuts in any one particular year.” Hanlon said the board is hoping for more money from the government “because our surplus isn’t going to last forever.” “There aren’t many more cuts we can do because there are all these cost pressures,” she said. “We want to try to make sure we’re able to meet the needs of the kids today.” Hanlon reported that the board is anticipating that more elementary schools will be facing the challenges of three grade-blended classrooms. “We have budgeted support for teachers to visit three grade blends within our district and in surrounding districts to prepare for these upcoming challenges,” she said. Other additions to the budget include monies for training for the implementation of the new student database MyEducationBC.

The total enrolment for SD51 on March 31, 2014 was 1,276. That number dropped to 1,274 on April 30. (Enrollment was 1,284 in Sept. 30, 2013. There were 1,484 students in Sept. 1, 2009.) Enrolment for individual schools are: (On April 30 and March 31, 2014; Sept. 30, 2013; and Sept. 1, 2009) GFSS – 340, 340, 342, 468 Perley – 255, 254, 264, 268 Hutton – 246, 245, 241, 241 Christina Lake – 78, 77, 85, 92 Walker Centre – 22, 25, 22, 41 Boundary Central – 124, 123, 123, 162 Big White Community School – 24, 31, 27, 15 West Boundary Elementary – 111, 109, 107, 104 Midway Elementary – 32, 30, 32, 35 Greenwood Elementary – 33, 32, 31, 47 Beaverdell Elementary - 9, 10, 10, 11 There are projected to be 1,207 students in SD51 in Sept. 30, 2015; 1,187 in 2016; 1,171 in 2017; and 1,150 in 2018.

City unveils new economic profile CITY OF GRAND FORKS to the Grand Forks Gazette
The City of Grand Forks is pleased to launch its new economic profile, focusing on the city’s strengths to help spread the word that ‘Grand Forks is open for business.’ “The city is taking an extremely proactive approach to attract investors and business to the community and this is one tool that we will have,” explained Mayor Brian Taylor. The provincial government is providing $76,100 to help control the spread of invasive plants. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary will receive $40,500 and Boundary Invasive Species Society will receive $33,600. “If serious steps are not taken to stop the spread of invasive plants there will be direct negative economic affects to our local Tourism and Agriculture,” Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson said. “I commend the organizations and volunteers who have taken on this difficult task and know they will make the best possible use of this funding.” The funding will be invested in activities such as raising public awareness of invasive
plants, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating high-priority sites to control their spread. “I would like to sincerely thank the province for its continued support of this vital program. Controlling and keeping out invasive species is essential to all citizens of British Columbia. This money will help to keep our local initiatives going strong,” said Bill Baird, RDKB Area E director. Invasive plants are species that have been introduced into B.C. from other areas. They displace our native vegetation and can cause considerable economic and environmental damage, and some pose a health risk to people. Invasive plants may disrupt natural ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry and adversely affect commercial crops.

Whether it’s Dick Bartlett Park, a busy road such as Market Avenue or one of the 258 fire hydrants in Grand Forks, have you ever wondered what it takes to ensure the city’s assets are in working order 24/7? Selkirk College, in partnership with the City of Grand Forks, the Public Works Association of B.C. and Urban Systems, is offering a new course in just that — asset management. “Whether it’s sidewalks or sewers or fire trucks, these are all city-owned assets that we rely on every day. These assets age over time and we need to have plans in place to manage them and take care of what we have to ensure it will last as long as safely able to do so,” said Mayor Brian Taylor. This program teaches participants how to use and apply effective maintenance management techniques to ensure proper maintenance and to

Grant to help in weed control The grants to the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and the Boundary Invasive Species Society are two of 29, totalling $1.6 million, which are being distributed provincewide to local governments, regional invasive species committees and the Invasive Species Council of B.C. to assist with their activities and support the objectives of the provincial Invasive Plant Program. The Invasive Plant Program identifies sites where invasive plant species have been found and responds rapidly to contain and eradicate them before they become established and start spreading. This funding is in addition to the $809,000 already earmarked by the provincial government for invasive plant control and management in the fiscal 201415 year.

Teachers set to strike and it didn’t,” he said. “Finally last Thursday the minister came out and said they’d back off from 10 years to six years (for contract length).” Sabourin said the government hasn’t dealt with any class size or composition issues or other concessions. The government also offered $1,200 signing bonus if teachers were to sign by the end of June. “There’s very little money on the table,” he said. “Six and a
half per cent over six years isn’t even equal to what the other public sector unions got.” Sabourin said the BCTF was contemplating the next step to take when, on Friday, the government, “swung the big stick.” “Instead of going after the BCTF to cover the employer benefit costs, the minister decided he would go after individual teachers at 5-10 per cent of their salary if a deal isn’t signed,” said Sabourin. “It’s

really, really unreasonable. It doesn’t sound like they’re bargaining in good faith. It seems like they’re trying to provoke a strike like they did two years ago.” Sabourin said it looks like B.C. teachers will continue with rotating strikes through the rest of the year unless a deal is made or real progress was being made toward making a deal.

Author Susan Juby says, “If one person who is feeling isolated or left out reads my book and laughs and thinks ‘I’m not alone’ or ‘at least I’m not as bad as the people she writes about’, then I’ve achieved my goal.” Off-beat and more than a little quirky, Juby’s characters are unforgettable. In The Woefield Poultry Collective, her first foray into adult fiction, she doesn’t disappoint. A novice farmer from New York City, a 70-something foreman with antiquated ideas, an alcoholic teenager and a take charge pre-teen are determined to make bankrupt Woefield Farm a success. Fortunately, our heroine, Prudence Burns, refuses to accept how the daunting task of turning the farm around is. Juby lives in Nanaimo, but her books have travelled, winning awards and accolades across North America. Her Alice MacLeod three-book series follows an endearing character SUSAN JUBY through the minefield of teenaged self-doubt; Another Kind of Cowboy marries the author’s deft understanding of adolescence with her other love—horses—and brought her a new set of nominations and award; and Getting the Girl takes us into high school detective territory. Her memoir, Nice Recovery, reveals her own battle with alcoholism as a young person. Juby will be giving an entertaining perspective into the creation of The Woefield Poultry Collective at the Grand Forks and District Public Library on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 a.m. This free event is sponsored by the Grand Forks and District Public Library and the Kootenay Library Federation. For more information contact the Grand Forks library at 250-442-3944 or leastwood@gfpl.ca.

An additional $1.1 million will be required to ensure the required fire flow to keep insurance rates low. Through all the discussion that has occurred the municipality can definitely see the benefit of installing water meters. Water meters will provide recognized
additional capacity allowing the municipality to extend the life expectancy of underground infrastructure; therefore, providing the opportunity for Council to consider additional funding for paving projects in 2014. This will be introduced to Council at the May 26, 2014 Regular Council Meeting for discussion.

Canadian Environment Week June 1-7, 2014 www.ec.gc.ca/enviroweek
CANADIAN ENVIRONMENT WEEK:
DIFFERENT WAYS
to take part
Getting involved is the first step towards preserving Canada’s environment. Celebrate Canadian Environment Week by helping to sustain the environment. Here are ideas and activities that you can do that will make a difference. You can participate anywhere and at any time. AT HOME:
1
. Save on air conditioning costs in the summer by opening your windows at night, and then keeping them closed during the day with the curtains drawn.
2
. Have a trash-free barbecue and invite guests to bring dinnerware (utensils) or use a Frisbee as a plate. This is good for the environment and good for your health (running after it) afterwards.
3
. While it is tempting, try not to open the door of your oven when using it. It reduces the oven temperature, therefore wasting precious energy.
4
. Instead of washing your car yourself, take it to a car wash. This saves more water than you think.
5
. Turn your yard into a sanctuary for local wildlife by planting wild flowers, supplying water and setting up a bird feeder.
6
. Use cedar chips instead of mothballs. Not only do they smell better, but they are better for the environment too. There are chemicals in mothballs that can harm animals, our environment and us if used incorrectly.
7
. Turn your thermostat down by a couple of degrees. You may find that you do not even notice the difference.
8
. Plant trees to shade your house. This will minimize your air conditioning costs in the summer.
9
. Install ENERGY STAR® Qualified Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) wherever possible, for maximum energy and money savings.
10
. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. This will help save hundreds of litres of water annually.
11
. Organize a clothing swap. Clear out unwanted clothing items from your closet and exchange them with friends and family in a special event or just for fun. This is a great way to renew your wardrobe, while at the same time saving money. Remember, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
12
. Reduce the amount of municipal solid waste going to landfills by participating in recycling programs that include curbside pick-up, return-to-retailer or enviro-depot drop-off locations. Visit your municipality’s website to learn how you can do your part to conserve resources.
June 4 is Clean Air Day Clean Air Day raises awareness and encourages action on clean air and climate change issues. Canadians can show their commitment by participating in activities that contribute to cleaner air, healthier communities and a better quality of life for all. Join in the fun at Overwaitea on June 4 from 1-4pm and learn more about Clean Air day! For more information contact Michele at michele.caskey@gmail.com
Free Cake and Handouts, from your B.C. Lung Association and co-sponsor Environment Committee will be provided.
AT WORK:
13
. Ask your employer if you can do flexible work hours or telecommute. The more cars we keep off the road, the better.
14
. Instead of wrapping your lunch in aluminum foil or saran wrap, use reusable containers.
15
. Instead of throwing out your old computers, TVs, VCRs, stereos and fax machines, reuse, refurbish or recycle them. Ask retailers if they have takeback programs for used electronics or contact your municipality for drop-off locations. For cellular devices, please visit the www.recyclemycell.ca website to find out where you can drop them off.
16
. Take public transit or carpool. Not only will you help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it will save you money on fuel. Join the Commuter Challenge (www.commuterchallenge.ca)!
17
. Turn off your hard drive when you are not using your computer. This will double its life and save energy.
18
. Reduce the amount of bottled water you drink. Bring your own mug for coffee or tea. Every time you use a reusable mug, you are saving one disposable cup.
ON THE WEB:
19

About one in five people—more than six and a half million Canadians—experiences a mental disorder during their lifetime. In Grand Forks, the numbers are higher, with 31 per cent of the population reporting that they live with depression and/or anxiety. Unfortunately, many people don’t ask for help because they feel ashamed or scared. People may judge them and treat them negatively based solely on the mental health problem. Others have trouble finding a place to live, finding a job, maintaining relationships and other important aspects of life. In fact, most people living with a mental disorder say that the stigma is worse than the symptoms they feel. Clara Hughes, Canada’s six-time cycling and speed-skating Olympic medallist, is trying to grow awareness and action about mental health and help end this stigma by completing a 110-day national bicycle tour across Canada. Clara’s Big Ride will visit every province and territory in Canada, including a visit to Grand Forks on Friday, May 23. Clara’s Big Ride will also showcase and support the work and value of local mental health organizations and initiatives across Canada. The community is invited to celebrate Clara’s arrival at a welcome event at Gyro Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Youth groups have been preparing, making T-
shirts and posters for the event., hoping to raise funds to send kids to camp. In Grand Forks and Boundary, the agency that provides much of that support is provided through Interior Health’s Mental Health and Substance Use Services (MHSU), which serve the local area from Christina Lake to Beaverdell and Bridesville. On average, 250 people access this service at any time. Psychiatrists, outreach workers and case Managers provide many services including short-term assessment and treatment, long-term programs for those with a serious and persistent mental illness, seniors’ mental health services as well as substance use prevention and treatment services. These programs are designed to support clients in their recovery. Along with services for individuals, the local MHSU Centre offers a number of support groups throughout the year. One of the biggest advantages of these groups is to help clients realize that they are not alone—that there are other people who have the same problems. This is often a revelation and a huge relief to the person. As well, being in a support group can also help people develop new skills to both manage their illness and connect with their community. Another local resource, the Mental Health Clubhouse, has a variety of programs running on a consistent basis including Art Group, Women’s Group, Wellness Support Group, Women’s Group, Men’s Group as well as offering breakfasts and socialization on Fridays. For more information contact Suzanne Lee, Boundary MHSU.

It’s pretty clear to say that cancer has or will touch everyone’s lives at some point. For most of us, though, it’s easy to forget the struggles unless you are battling it or a close friend or family member is. Relay For Life is one of those events that everyone knows about and that brings together different people from different walks of life for a common goal: to rid the world of cancer. This year’s relay in Grand Forks takes place on June 7 at James Donaldson Park and goes from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. People contribute different ways. Many join teams and participate (you still can), while many sponsor their friends or family members, while other brave souls shave their heads on stage. “We’re looking to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and the many programs they offer,” said Jennifer Edwards, chair of this year’s relay. “We have 12 teams confirmed and around 120 people so far. We have a couple of other teams that haven’t registered yet but we expect them to do so.” Edwards said that teams can fundraiser together and pool their money, or the individuals can fundraise towards their team or themselves. “A lot of teams will do bake sales or car washes or a silent auction,” she said. “They’ll do team fundraisers or
individuals could ask their friends and co-workers to sponsor them.” Edwards said each team must have one member on the track at a time. “It’s nice because people can walk the track when it fits their schedule,” she said. “Generally, a lot of the team will come together and walk the track together.” The Boundary Relay For Life will start off with the Celebrate Ceremony and the survivor lap. At the end of the evening, participants will line the track and light up the luminaries. “We also have a fight back ceremony,” said Edwards. “We look at the ways we can fight back against cancer. Five years ago he shaved his head for cancer at the Grand Forks Hotel. Also shaving her head is Lynn Whyte, who leads all relay participants in money raised so far with a whopping $1,495. As a cancer survivor, Whyte knows first-hand the benefits of the cancer society. She participates in the relay every year but this is the first time she has

I just wanted to raise more awareness and more funds.” Whyte said she has a sister-in-law who has terminal lung cancer. “Until you have cancer yourself you don’t realize how many people have cancer,” she said. “It’s amazing.” Whyte is really looking forward to the relay and having her locks shorn. “I’m extremely excited,” she said. “As it gets closer I can’t wait.”

Roll of honour for Stoochnoff CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Grand Forks resident Peter Stoochnoff, provincial commissioner for B.C. Babe Ruth Baseball, was inducted into the Pacific Northwest region’s Roll of Honour at the end of April. The Roll of Honour is the highest mark of distinction that can be given you by your peers, said Gord Welbourne, Pacific Northwest commissioner, in a press release. “Your longstanding dedication to the Babe Ruth program is acknowledged and you are most deserving of this prestigious recognition,” he said. Stoochnoff has been involved with Babe Ruth Baseball in Grand Forks since it began in 1956. He started as a coach and was quickly recruited onto the board of directors where he has held almost every position and is still involved. In addition to being the provincial commissioner, Stoochnoff is the president of the local association and has been since the 1970s.

Samuel Clyde Waselenkoff August 12, 1955 May 10, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our brother Clyde. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home at the age of 58 on May 10, 2014. Clyde was born in Grand Forks, BC on August 12, 1955 to Lucy and Sam Waselenkoff. He grew up in Grand Forks and after marrying the love of his life, Kim Lalande, they moved to Kamloops. Kim and Clyde worked together to raise their daughter Danielle and build their family business, Pacific Chemicals. Clyde worked tirelessly at his business and continued to do so at the time of his passing. Clyde was a very proud man and his greatest accomplishment in life was his daughter Danielle whom he loved dearly. Clyde leaves behind his daughter Danielle, her husband Kent and grandchildren, Julian, Noelle and Isabelle, his best friend Kim, his brother Jerry, his sister Janice and brother-in-law Paul and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Please join us for a celebration of Clyde’s life on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 7252-7th St. in Grand Forks, BC at 12:00 (noon). Lunch will be provided by the family.
Peter Raymond
Nichols
1941 - 2014
Peter was born on July 6th, 1941. He lived in several places, but Grand Forks and Christina Lake were always home. As a young couple, he and his wife moved here in 1973. With their six children, they lived the farming lifestyle he valued. He’d learned how to roof as a young man & continued to do so well into his years. His parents and sister lived at the Lake, as did Peter for many years. Pete lived very simply. He liked to work with his hands, was glad to put in a hard days work, and felt good when he could help another bring in the hay, build, or fix a car/truck. He enjoyed being outdoors: working with animals & watching the wildlife; having a quick dip in the river or boating, waterskiing, and canoeing on the lake; going for long walks & hikes up the mountain. He loved music, singing and dancing. He was generous with his time when it came to people, often gathering with family & friends. He was humble and modest in his way, and honestly outspoken with what he had to say. He’d share his opinions on history, religion, politics, and events of the day. He loved reminiscing & sharing stories of his many adventures. Pete was big in character, with a rebellious spirit, quick wit, and sense of humour. He also had a ‘softness’ within his soul, a resiliency & integrity of his own, with which he lived his life. Pete passed away on April 21st, 2014 at 72 years of age. Peter had twelve grandchildren, a large extended family, and many loved & dear friends. His family has held a small gathering in his remembrance. We acknowledge there are many who loved & cared about Peter; and are thankful if you have touched his life, or he yours. We welcome you to remember him in your own time and honor him in your own way. Whether it is with a laugh or a tear, please remember Pete’s love is always near.
