Dog owners still mad over park Plead with parks commission to keep off-leash area open by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
West Maple Ridge residents will be hitting the roads in order to give their pooches some free-run excercise after June 10, as time runs out on the Volker Park off-leash area. For Gordon and Doris Westrand, that means driving to Pitt Meadows, or as far as Port Coquitlam so their little terrier Spud can tear around safely in an enclosed offleash dog area and hang out with his buds. “We’re lucky. We have the resources to travel,” Gordon said Tuesday after a plea by dog owners at Thursday’s parks and leisure services commission meeting to keep the Maple Ridge park open. “Those people who don’t have the resources to travel, I don’t know what they’re going to do.”

Teachers to start rotating strikes Reject province’s offer of six years, signing bonus by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
Teachers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will go on strike Tuesday as part of rotating job action across the province and as tensions rise between the union and B.C. government. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation announced the rotating strikes on
Monday as it rejected the government’s offer of a $1,200 signing bonus if the union approved a sixyear contract offer with 6.5 per cent in wage increases by the end of the current year. The escalating job action also defies a government warning that it will cut teacher salaries if a deal doesn’t get done this year. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows acting school superintendent Laurie Meston said the job action will not yet interrupt scheduling of provincial exams, but it does disrupt students who are preparing to write

Job action is also frustrating for parents, but Kellie Marquet, chair of the district parent advisory council, is sympathetic to educators. “Our current government is trying to bully teachers, and I hope that through this next escalation

Greg Walker and Doug Hume found the mossy memorial cross.
To the top of Evans Peak, again Permanent monument will be bolted into mountain rock for immemorial by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
O
n a spring day, June 6, 1966, Lesley Evans and his son John went for a hike in Golden Ears Provincial Park. A passerby said he’d seen them with climbing rope, headed for Edge Peak.
That was the last time there were seen. No trace was ever found, even after repeated searches over several years. While gone, they’ve never been forgotten. John Hume, a family friend and longtime member of the Ridge Meadows Outdoors Club, managed to get the main peak and a valley named after them, convincing the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names in Ottawa to do so. And now John’s son, Doug Hume, wants to solidify their place on the mountain by having a metal plaque bolted into the rock at the top of Evans Peak. The goal is to make a permanent marker to replace a wooden cross that was carried up there a quarter of a century ago. In 1989, Doug led a group, including Lesley’s two other sons, George and David, up the front side of Evans Peak.

George (left) and Dave Evans hiked the peak in 2003 to scatter their mother’s ashes in the resting place of her lost husband and son.
At the time, the pair were part of the Royal Grenadier Guards out of England, in Canada for live munitions and adventure training.

They brought up a cross and fixed it to a tree and said a few words. The original plan was to use cement to fasten it into the mountain, but there was no water to make a mix. Last summer, Doug returned to the peak with a few friends and looked for that cross. At first, they couldn’t find it. The peak had changed a lot. Then they stumbled on to a piece of moss-covered wood. They removed the moss and made out a barely legible inscription: “In memory of Lesley Evans and elder son John Evans, killed here on the 6th of June 1966: The cross was placed here by his sons Sgt. George Evans and Sgt. David Evans and members of the Signals Platoon, First Battalion Grenadier Guards, July 1989.” This June, Doug, as well as David Evans, and another Grenadier Guard, will climb to the top of Evans Peak, again. This time, they’ll have a metal plaque and bolts and the memorial will be permanently installed into the mountain rock. Although David’s mom Diane returned to England after her husband disappeared, she always wanted to have her ashes scattered close to where her husband and son disappeared. “That was her final wish,” David said previously. Diane was given that wish in 2003, when her sons released her ashes in the mountain breezes in nearby Evans Valley. “The Evans Peak is one of the most prominent peaks if you’re staying at the Golden Ears campground,” said Doug. “If you’re doing the East Canyon Trail, it just stands out.”
Despite a dreary weather forecast, the long weekend turned out to be hot and sunny for most residents of the Lower Mainland. But for one motorist at Golden Ears Provincial Park, it may have been too hot for comfort. At 1:56 p.m. on Sunday, a woman driving an older Jeep Cherokee noticed smoke coming from under the hood while waiting in line to enter the campground area and called the Maple Ridge fire department. By the time trucks arrived, the car had burst into flames. “It was burning pretty good,” said fire chief Dane Spence. “Firefighters had to extinguish the fire, and advised that it started in the engine compartment of the vehicle.” Police were also called to the scene, but by the time they arrived the fire had been dealt with. SSG Holdings, the company that operates the park, said that on a typical long weekend it sees all 402 campground sites occupied. Stu Burgess, operational manager for the company, estimated that there were about 400-500 vehicles trying to enter the park that day. “It happened about 11 kilometres into the park,” he said. “It affected people trying to get in and out of the campground for about an hour, because there’s only one way into the camp and we had to shut that down.” Despite extensive damage to the vehicle, there were no injuries. RCMP said that they are not looking into the inci-

Martha Riva fears for her safety and that of others as she’s noticed the number of prostitutes in her downtown neighbourhood has increased. “I go out walking the other night and I see them,” said Riva, who’s lived with her husband in an apartment building on 223rd street for the past seven years. “Lots of street workers standing here. It’s menacing.” Riva, a health care worker, believes the number of sex trade in Maple Ridge has increased in recent weeks. “You just open your doors, step out and there’s the hookers there,” she said. “I like to walk anytime I want to. This is Canada.” Several local businesses have also noticed the increase in sex trade workers downtown. Kelly Pliner works at the Vernon and Thompson Law Group and sees them the corner of 119th Avenue and 223rd Street. “I see them in the day, at night, all the time,” she said. “Sometimes old faces disappear and new ones come in, but they all come back eventually.” She’s heard from law office clients complaining about being approached outside the office at all hours of the day. “They’re out at eight in the morning. I don’t know what kind of business they get at eight in the morning, but they obviously get something,” Pliner said. “My husband works in Surrey and even he comes up and says ‘wow, that’s bad.’” Pliner said that the RCMP tells people to call if they feel uncomfortable or see anything suspicious, but claims that they don’t do much. Maple Ridge Coun. Bob Masse, who also owns a downtown business, has been aware of the problem for years, said the municipality continues to work on the issue. “There was a process a couple of weeks ago, when police went into the bush area just to the southwest of the [Haney] bypass behind Catalina Pools and the Caring Place and moved people out of there,” he said. Masse believes several happenings have decreased the number of sex trade workers in the area. “I think that’s partly due to a few changes in policing practices, and council approving things like the Alouette Heights project at 222nd [Street] and Brown.” Ineke Boekhorst, executive director at the Business Improvement Association, doesn’t think prostitution in the area is any worse than before. “There’s a lot of people hanging around in that area. It’s not always proven that they are what people perceive they are,” she said. “If somebody walks around in shabby clothing, people perceive it immediately as a homeless person or a street worker. It’s not always the case,” she added. “There’s no bylaw against what they’re doing. They’re just on the corner of a street. As long as they’re not engaging in business they have just as much right to be there as you or I.” Boekhorst believes that much of the panic may simply be a change in weather. “Perception and actual facts are two different things.” RCMP patrol the area, but have not seen an increased number of reports regarding sex trade workers recently.

New agency processing recyclables by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge residents have a few more details to add to their recycling chores starting this week. With Multi Material BC taking over the marketing of recyclables as of May 19, people are being asked to scrunch up their soft plastic wraps and plastic bags and put them all into one bag which is tied at the top. That will make it easier for sorters to process at the depot, says the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot. Another new thing – remove the lids from all glass bottles and jars. Put the plastic lids in the pink bag and the metal lids in the orange bag. The green bag that used to include office paper and magazines is disappearing. All of that paper can go into the blue bag (or tote container) that contains newspaper. You can also now throw large catalogues or phone books into that bag. There’s also a selection of new recyclables that are now accepted. Plastics labelled No. 3, 6, & 7, aerosol cans (empty, no paint cans), aseptic (Tetra Pak style) soup cartons, and paper coffee cups are now accepted. The coffee cups go into the yellow, (cardboard) bag, while Tetra Pak soup cartons go into the or-

ange bag. The depot also takes Styrofoam and light bulbs, books and paint but you still have to haul that down to the depot on River Road yourself. MMBC is a new non-profit industry organization that charges manufacturers for the packaging used in their products, with the goal of reducing the amount of waste going into garbage dumps. It’s paying the District of Maple Ridge about $1 million yearly. In return, MMBC gains the revenues from marketing the recyclables. “We are ready to deliver blue
box residential recycling services to nearly 1.25 million British Columbians in 88 communities,” said Allen Langdon, managing director for MMBC. “We are looking forward to working in partnership with all those involved in delivering recycling services, and residents who are critical to helping us reach our goal of increasing recycling rates from 53 per cent to 75 per cent.” The program will allow recycling of new categories of packaging not commonly included in current curbside or depot recycling programs, including milk cartons, plant pots, aluminum foil packaging, plastic film, and drink cups. New Curbside Recycling Flyer – May, 2014 or New Apartment Recycling Flyer – May, 2014 However, several agricultural businesses are vowing to defy MMBC and refuse to pay into the new package recycling system. As well, breweries are advancing their own system and talks are also underway with the newspaper industry which say the new system will hurt financially. Newspapers say they face a $14-million-a-year bite out of their operations because of the 20 cents per kilogram they will pay on newsprint, compared to less than half a penny in Ontario.

State of disrepair Time after time, when it comes to fulfilling the basic duties of operating a municipality for the public good – for the benefit of taxpayers – Maple Ridge comes up short, and it falls to media to hound the district to do its job. For some reason, Maple Ridge is unable to fulfill its job of keeping the building stock in good repair, of ensuring that death traps don’t hang around too long, before they’re demolished and the hazard removed. The latest examples are the burnt-out apartment building on McIntosh Avenue – a blight on the downtown if ever there was one – and two old homes at the entrance to downtown, in a prime real estate location on Lougheed Highway, which still stand despite being gutted in a fire in April 2013. Though demolition of the homes is imminent, pest control must first be done. Those follow a few months ago a raid on a crack house on St. Anne Avenue, managed by one of the politicians on council. That got attention for a while, and finally led to some clean up. Northumberland Court, a boil on the downtown, festered for years before Maple Ridge found the will to do something. When Mayor Ernie Daykin is asked to explain why, he has no answers, just lame platitudes that show he either doesn’t know what’s going on, doesn’t care, or is powerless to do anything about it. Coun. Cheryl Ashlie has raised the topic about why it takes so long to tear down ugly, dangerous buildings and never got an answer. But she never pursued it much, either. Meanwhile, others on council, each earning $42,000 a year for a part-time job, are as quiet as mice. But we’ve made that comment before. Complacence and compliance rule at Maple Ridge municipal hall. And they wonder why big names won’t show up in our town. – The News

Aboriginal education or victim studies? VICTORIA – The B.C. School Trustees’ Association is calling for a mandatory high school course on the history of residential schools set up to assimilate aboriginal children into European culture. Trustees propose a 25-hour course B.C. Views required for all Tom Fletcher graduating students, using interviews with residential school survivors, presentations by aboriginal leaders and discussion of current events. This would build on aboriginal courses already in offered in B.C. schools, and a public education effort that began with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s 2008 apology and compensation for Canada’s residential school policy. B.C. Teachers’ Federation vice-president Glen Hansman gave a speech on the need for mandatory education to a 2012 teacher conference. He said current aboriginal culture courses are poorly attended, and went on to denounce a school system he said is still based on “colonialism” and a “settler construct” of history. “We need to acknowledge that racism is the norm in public schools – still today,” Hansman said. Is it really? He also claimed that the purpose and legacy of the residential schools have been “deliberately hidden” from school curriculum. In lieu of evidence, Hansman recounted old anecdotes of American-style stereotyping from his own schooling in Ontario. But mostly he demanded
social engineering in schools that must, of course, include more funding, more teacher professional development time and an affirmative action program to recruit more aboriginal teachers. Do Hansman’s allegations reflect the kind of attitude that would lead to truth and reconciliation? Or are they signs of another unfortunate legacy, that of the victim studies mentality that permeates our universities? Here’s a suggestion for this mandatory course. Students could spend a couple of hours on one of the definitive works of B.C. aboriginal history, A Stó:lo Coast Salish Historical Atlas. A long-term project of the Stól:lo Nation, the atlas has meticulously documented chapters on European contact and residential schools, and others that piece together oral histories and what few written records there are of B.C. First Nations life at the time of European contact. A journal kept at Fort Langley from 1827 to 1830 documents some of the raids between aboriginal communities on the Fraser River and Vancouver Island, corroborating elders’ accounts. During those three years, Cowichan men attacked the Chilliwack Stó:lo community four times. In the same period, the journal records 30 incidents of inter-community violence, some reaching down to presentday Washington state. Atlas editor Keith Thor Carlson summarized the research this way: “Viewed from the perspective of the aggressor, raids and attacks appear to have been motivated primarily by a desire to obtain quick wealth (in the form of slaves and property such as dried and smoked salmon) or to exact revenge for previous insults.” Archaeological study of stone fortifica-
tions and weapons at fishing sites in the Fraser Canyon traces a history of intercommunity violence back at least 3,000 years. Historians characterize some of this as warfare. British colonial authorities had some “settler constructs” about these activities: they saw them as assault, robbery, abduction and murder as well as slavery. This is the seldom-discussed backdrop for the European settlement of British Columbia, the imposition of British law and the later establishment of church-run residential schools.
“This is the seldom-discussed backdrop for the European settlement of British Columbia, the imposition of British law and the later establishment of church-run residential schools.” None of this is to excuse the forced removal of aboriginal children from their families, the horrendous abuse and neglect or the multi-generational damage to a culture already weakened by waves of smallpox. This 1928 plan to fix what was called the “Indian problem” deserves to be understood by everyone. But glossing over historical context and presenting a guilt trip to students would serve no one well. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

online comments Same battle? Kyle Jordan: Re: ‘Why we still need gay-straight groups’ (The News, May 9). I am so glad this issue is being raised. I am having a similar issue in that what I’ve been born with does not correspond to what I identify with. Specifically, I don’t feel that my age corresponds with my desired birth date designation. You see, I was born in 1980, which makes me 34 years old. However, when I study the generation descriptions, and some of the hallmarks of each, I feel that I identify much more with the 20-somethings demographic. Consequently, I have inquired about changing the date of my birth on my birth certificate to correspond to a birth date that I identify with as an individual, which falls in the year of 1992. I do not feel that my inquiries have been taken seriously, and would go so far as to say that I have experienced age-regressionphobia. I know this is a relatively new concept, but I feel as though the small minority of us who wish to change our birth dates are being discriminated against. I mean, who are they to tell me that I am wrong in wishing to change something that I was born with, but don’t identify with as an individual? I feel as though we are fighting the same battle here, and so I am so happy to hear that this is being raised.

Editor, The News: Re: Seniors told, pay more or move (The News, May 16). My dad used to say: “When the Conservatives are in power, the people suffer.” I feel his statement still applies today. I feel the reason pensions were established in the first place is because at no time in history were people (average working folks) able to
financially acquire enough wealth to sustain them in their golden years. Only the one per cent have been so fortunate to take care of themselves. Both the B.C. Liberal and federal government are raking in tons of money from over-taxing the average income earners throughout this country. I’m curious, whose pockets are being lined with all these tax dollars? I feel both the federal Conservative and B.C. Liberal governments should get their priorities straight.
Both governments need to work together to bring about improvements: Pension reform is long overdue – seniors, often widows or widowers, need adequate housing, enough money to cover food, clothing, and medical expenses. I feel seniors should live with dignity and should not have to skip meals to pay for basic needs. No one wants to see their grandparent live on the street. Health care funding also needs to be improved and increased so it actually cov-
ers patient care. What this country needs is a modern day Tommy Douglas – a man who believed in self-dignity, the right to adequate housing, health care, education, and all things positive for the working class. There is no equal opportunity in this country anymore, as it has gone by the wayside. If we stand together, we can make a difference. Never underestimate the voice of the people. Marie Robson Maple Ridge
Liberals: make a plan to end poverty in B.C. Editor, The News: I am not sure what community MLA Marc Dalton lives in that he has not seen poverty in Maple Ridge. If there is no poverty, then why has the number of food bank clients grown dramatically in the past decade, including children and seniors? Why has the Caring Place begun making sandwiches to be delivered to schools to provide lunches for hungry
children? Why are the meals at the Caring Place, the Saturday night meal at Golden Ears United and the food truck downtown on Friday night so busy serving hungry people? Why have schools started breakfast programs? Maple Ridge is an awesome community that responds to these needs magnificently.
I hope Mr. Dalton will spend some time visiting some of these places and see the level of poverty and the great charitable work being done to alleviate it. Perhaps he will then encourage his colleagues to address this issue and make a plan to end poverty, as most other provinces in Canada have already done. Bob Goos Maple Ridge

“It’s in the middle of nowhere and it’s in the flood plain,” says Gordy Robson, mayor of Maple Ridge between 2005 and 2008. “There’s absolutely no transit down there for anything. That’s silly. If you don’t have transit, you can’t do anything.” The District of Maple Ridge has been negotiating with Smart Centres to switch the developer’s land on the west side of 105th Av-

process for selling district-owned land. That includes public notices that describe the property, and who will buy it and what “consideration” the district will get for the sale. People, though, want more shopping in the district, said Mayor Ernie Daykin. “If the mall builders don’t think they can fill up a 250,000-sq.foot mall, they wouldn’t continue down the path to make something happen.” Shopping remains a form of entertainment, he added, and creating a big-box mall in the area would keep people from leaving Maple Ridge to do so. Daykin said a mall development would require an exclusion application from the land reserve and require a district public hearing. One of those possibly affected by the redevelopment could be the Ridge Meadows Home Show, which takes place every year in Planet Ice at the Albion fairgrounds. If the fairgrounds and parking lot moved to the west side of 105th Avenue, more shuttling of visitors and exhibitors from parking lots to the home show would be required. “We can’t start shuttling to another venue,” said organizer Cass Winder. “It would certainly change the show.” Home show organizers were to meet this week with district staff to discuss possible impacts.

enue with district land on the east side of the same road, comprising the Albion fairgrounds. The east side has the Agricultural Land Commission’s tacit blessing for removal from the farmland reserve, while the west side does not. But Robson says selling the district land should be a public process and have to go through an alternative approval process, which means it could go to referendum if more than 10 per cent vote against. “I think you have to do something like that.” Robson said when he was mayor, he favoured a larger scale plan in the area that would have started with an overpass at the intersection of 105th Avenue, crossing the CP Rail tracks and connecting the south side of Albion with the north and creating a commercial/residential node focused on that intersection. But nothing could happen without an overpass. Robson said that without transit, downtown Maple Ridge won’t thrive because people have no way to get to work in order to support development of the core area. Bricks and mortar shopping isn’t as attractive any more, he added. He said the district gets “stuck in these ruts … and they don’t recognize the product anymore.” According to district staff, the Community Charter sets out the

Anti-tax group misfires on TransLink mayors and transit referendum Just a couple of new revenue sources to be proposed, will less impact by Jef f Nage l Black Press
Anti-tax activists aren’t waiting for an expected June release of proposed new fees or taxes to fund TransLink expansion. Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) B.C. director Jordan Bateman says polling on potential options suggests Metro Vancouver mayors will go to referendum on multiple new revenue sources that could cost the typical household hundreds of dollars more each year. He issued a news release estimating the combined increases at $595 per year. In an interview, however, Bateman backtracked from that estimate, which assumed all sources under discussion would be fully used. “We don’t expect them to come forward wanting all of those tools,” Bateman said, adding the aim was to make residents aware of the possible impact of each individual source when a proposed package is unveiled. An Angus Reid online poll that Bateman takes as evidence of what’s to come discusses a $75 per year vehicle levy, a new 0.5 per cent carbon tax in Metro, a 0.5 per cent regional sales tax for TransLink and road/bridge tolls of less than $1 per trip, as well as further increases in property taxes and transit fares. TransLink, Metro Vancouver and the mayors’ council all say they weren’t behind the poll.
Mayors have indicated they will propose just a couple of new sources, not the entire menu, and they’ve consistently said road pricing is a longer-term idea that could not be on the ballot of a referendum expected by mid-2015. TransLink strategic planning vice-president Bob Paddon said the CTF’s estimate that the region’s average household already pays $1,060 annually to TransLink is way too high. The actual figure is about $605, according to Paddon, who said the CTF wrongly counted all property tax revenue as coming from residential homeowners when a big chunk of it – $145 million – comes from businesses. Paddon said taxes paid to TransLink make up less than 10 per cent of total household spending on transportation, once the cost of vehicles and fuel are taken into account. “Contributing to TransLink not only benefits those who use transit, but it eases the pressures of congestion and contributes to the livability of our region,” he said. Metro board chair Greg Moore said Bateman “should consider using his time more constructively and offer solutions to this region, instead of cheap press releases that do nothing.” There’s strong support among Metro mayors for the need to raise more money for transit, as well as road projects like replacing the Pattullo Bridge, in light of existing congestion
HIV tests offered to all adults
and projections Metro’s population will grow by another million over then next 25 years. “If we want a livable region we need to invest in a world-class transit system,” said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart. “The alternative to properly funding transit is an enormous increase in property taxes to pay for bigger roads. Because no one wants congestion.” Bateman continues to
oppose any more money for TransLink and said he hopes the mayors’ delay in making an announcement means they’re split on what to do. “There’s no magic taxes that aren’t going to cost some group or most taxpayers more money,” Bateman said. “We don’t believe in giving pyromaniacs more matches. TransLink burns through enough of our money already.”

Routine HIV-AIDS testing is being offered once every five years to all B.C. residents aged 18-70, building on infection control efforts that have been recognized around the world in reducing disease transmission and death. B.C.’s “Treatment as Prevention” strategy has proven so effective in pilot programs in Vancouver and Prince George that the government is extending its outreach efforts across the province. Routine testing of pregnant women has all but eliminated mother-child transmission, and anti-viral therapies have cut the death toll of AIDS by 90 per cent since 1996. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said going beyond identified risk groups has proven effective in finding infected people in time to provide effective drug treatment. The treatment not only extends life to nearly normal lifespan, it also prevents most transmission of the virus once the patient is being treated.

The following are a few things parents should take into consideration when seeking a summer camp for their kids. Staff The right summer camp staff can make all the difference. Many children are understandably shy when arriving at a summer camp, as their friends from back home might not be joining them. But a good staff will know how to make kids feel welcome, which should help them come out of their shells and make the most of their summer camp experiences. Ask how long the staff has been together and the types of training new and even veteran staff members undergo before the start of camp season? Does the training include first aid and emergency medical training and certification? Are criminal background checks conducted? How many references must potential staff members supply to be considered for employment? A good camp will be forthcoming with answers to all of your questions, so eliminate those that appear hesitant to share information about their staff. A day in the life When vetting camps for kids, parents should ask what a typical day is like once the season hits full swing. Ask to see

schedules and how strictly camps adhere to those schedules. When considering specialized camps, ask the staff representative if kids will have the chance to simply have a little fun and which types of recreational activities are planned to give kids a break from what are often rigorous schedules. Camp goals A camp should be dedicated to ensuring kids have fun, even when kids are attending more specialized camps that tend to be more strict. In addition, parents should look for a camp that wants its attendees to foster relationships with their fellow campers.

The ‘puppy poisoner has won’ Dogs from front
The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services Commission decided to close the off-leash area – one of seven in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – at its April 10 meeting after hearing from some nearby residents. Dog lovers then appealed to commissioners at the May 15 meeting. “The whole problem was the lack of openness and inclusiveness in this thing,” said Gordon. A petition with 1,200 names was presented, calling for the park to remain open. There was also a smaller petition by those who wanted the park closed. “Isn’t that a lot of names?” Doris said of the
first petition. “Shouldn’t that have an influence, you think?” she asked. She pointed out that during the meeting, commission members were saying they wanted public input on a variety issues. They received it that evening on the dog park, she said. Doris maintains staff weren’t given a chance to fix the problems caused by the park. Nor were they given enough time to grow grass in the area to cut down on the dust caused by dogs running around. Noise could have been reduced by planting trees and shrubs. “But if you’re someone who hates that park and doesn’t want it there, you just need to have one
bark and that’s enough.” Gordon made a presentation to the commission, saying no real process preceded the decision and that the process was one-sided. He asked to have the decision tabled for the time being. “They didn’t respond. They stayed silent.” Gordon disagreed with some commissioners’ comments that vandalism and violence could increase if the park remained. Last July 2013, dog walkers found broken auto glass in the off-leash area. And a month ago, Westrand and his wife found about 40 tacks strewn on the ground. But noise, not vandal-
ism, was the deciding factor, parks director David Boag said earlier. “The commission just felt it was just too great a burden to put on folks in that neighbourhood.” For Gordon, though, “the puppy poisoner has won.” The decision also angered dog owner Wayne Clark, who’s dog was poisoned and almost died. He said in a letter: “I have to wonder what kind of world we are now living in where a few bullies and psychopaths can force change on all the rest of us.” Mayor Ernie Daykin said the commission’s April 7-4 decision was made at a regular, open meeting. It’s not subject to being overruled by Maple Ridge council. “I don’t want to undermine the commission. The majority rules.”
offer of 6.5 per cent over six years. A simultaneous threat to cut teacher wages five per cent or more because of strike action is “just so disrespectful, so unnecessary … “ Iker reiterated the union’s position that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and special needs support are needed to reach a settlement. Peter Cameron, chief negotiator for the province’s 60 school districts, informed the union last week that a five per cent pay cut will be put in place “soon” in response to the first phase of strike action. He warned it could escalate to 10 per cent if job action escalates. The BCTF began workto-rule action in April, refusing supervision outside classrooms and communication with school management. Cameron said the union’s wage demand
amounts to 15.9 per cent over four years, more than what other provincial public service unions have received. The BCTF maintains its wage proposal is 13.25 per cent over four years, including cost-of-living
increases based on each year’s inflation rate. Missed school days could be made up by extending the school calendar into summer vacation, but that decision would be made by the Education Ministry.
Missed school days could be made up Teachers from front
But that will depend on the progress at the bargaining table. Because teaching is deemed an essential service in B.C., the BCTF had its job action approved by the Labour Relations Board. The BCTF will put a new issue before the labour board this week, ask- Serra ing whether Victoria cutting salaries over job action amounts to bad faith bargaining. “We will be taking this latest threat to the LRB,” said Serra. He noted the province already threatened to bill the union for health benefits if it continued job action, but backed off. Serra said teachers should not settle for a one-time signing bonus of $1,200. “It needs to be on the grid – for years to come, and for new teachers.” BCTF president Jim Iker said Tuesday the bonus doesn’t make up for the government’s wage

He voted against closing the park, though. “I think that two months is too quick.” Staff had recommended shorter hours at the park to cut down on the noise, and will now re-

Horsemen put on Rendezvous in Ridge Local horse-riding and trail group partners with BCHBC by G ari n Fahlman contributor
F
rom from May 30 to June 1, the Back Country Horsemen of B.C. are hosting their annual gathering and fundraiser, Rendezvous 2014 at the Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre, and for the first time are inviting the public to join them. Previously only open to members of the organization, this year BCHBC is teaming up with the Haney Horsemen association, a local Maple Ridge equivalent, opening the Rendezvous up to the public and corporate sponsors. The 700-member organization is dedicated to promoting safe, responsible backcountry travel among those who ride horses and mules on wilderness trails throughout
14-073.16_Furnace_10.3125x2-P1.indd 1
B.C. BCHBC works with government and other trail users to build, maintain, and map trails on public land. “We just want to share our passion for exploring the backcountry of BC and for horses with members of our communities, whether they ride or own a horse or not. We also want to give people in the Lower Mainland, especially kids, an opportunity to experience and enjoy some aspects of rural life,” said Peter Thiessen, chair of the BCHBC Rendezvous fundraiser for 2014. The event features the Super Save Stomp, a Barn Dance on Saturday night May 31st featuring Canadian Country Music Award nominee Aaron Pritchett, opened by CCMA winner One More Girl. The evening kicks off with a barbeque, and a live and silent auction, a major fundraiser for the not- for- profit club. Tickets for the Barn Dance are available on line at www.bchorsemen.org or at the
Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre. There are sheep dog demos, renderings of cowboy poetry, and the Preston GM/Sunrise Trailers vendor’s fair offering western bling, saddles, trailers, trucks and crafts. Event organizers have included lots of activities for kids to enjoy, including horse and buggy rides, a chance to learn how to rope a pretend cow, kids doing acrobatics on horses, and a demonstration of archery on horseback by a Whistler boy attempting to break an archery record set by a grand master in Hungary. Back this year by popular demand is the Saturday morning Hoof & Woof, a team competition with a horse and rider and a dog and dog handler, each pair navigating obstacles together in a timed and judged event. Equestrians of any discipline can audit clinics all weekend long. Featured clinicians include Glen Stewart, a world-renowned Canadian clinician who excels in helping people create willing trail-
horses. Sam Sunderland will teach participants how to make it the horse’s idea, while Debbie Hughes will be helping riders learn about the new sport of Mountain Trail Horse. As always, this year’s BCHBC Rendezvous will be a chance for trail riders from around the province to show off their backcountry skills, and to learn from experts about horse care, trail etiquette, saddle fitting and packing, colt starting, and how to choose a good trail horse. Equestrian artist Vivian Harder will give a lesson on drawing horses. “It takes a lot of knowledge, skill and experience to travel and camp in the backcountry with horses. We have to learn how to pack our gear on a horse or mule, how to make sure our animals stay healthy in the wilderness, and to ‘leave no trace’ behind. Of course, there is a certain amount of fun mixed in with the learning, and a little friendly competition,” said Thiessen.

The students are selected based on a combination of their technical skill, level of presentation, a demonstration of artistic impression, grades relating to the arts, personal resume, and their post-secondary plan. “It is such an honour to receive this prestigious scholarship,” said Nicholas Renaud, a music student at Maple Ridge secondary and one of the scholarship recipients. “An affirmation that I have my community behind me as I enter my post-secondary studies in music is a true confidence boost and extremely gratifying. I hope to one day give back to my community in my capacity as a music teacher and this scholarship will help me realize this goal. Thank you.” The scholarship has been offered to students

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Reid ’em and weep, Burrards deal a loss Creighton Reid scores winner in overtime by Neil Corbe tt Black Press
No starting goaltender? No WLA scoring leader? No problem. The Maple Ridge Burrards had to sweat out a 10-minute overtime, including the final minutes with their thirdstring goaltender holding the fort, but gutted out an 8-6 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen. Planet Ice was packed, as minor lacrosse players came for Sunday’s opening night pre-game barbecue and festivities, and the Burrards wanted to give them a good show. Scoring leader Curtis Dickson and starting goaltender Frankie Scigliano were still with the Calgary Roughnecks in the National Lacrosse League playoffs, and other players were missing as well. So some of the supporting cast stepped into the limelight, and new coach Chris Gill had to rely on his grinders to get the win. They got up 4-1, but then let the T-men tie it up.. Then, with a five-on-three power play, the Burrards gave up a shorthanded goal to go down 6-5. Jarrett Davis fed a pass to Mike Mallory for an empty-netter to tie it up and salvage the power play from a complete disaster. The game ended 6-6, and went into OT. Creighton Reid played hero. He had already converted a third-period breakaway with a top-corner goal, and got his second halfway through the overtime as he spun off a hit and let got a quick shot for the game winner. New addition Ryan McMichael ripped a shot top corner to get the insurance marker. “It was a little sloppy on

Nanaimo Timbermen ball-carrier Cayle Ratcliff faces tight checking from Maple Ridge Burrard Colton Porter during Sunday’s opener. both ends, which is kind of expected for the first game of year,” said Davis. He played his last NLL game on Friday night with Edmonton, and said he didn’t have much energy for the hope opener “I barely had anything in there,” he admitted. “At least it was enough to get the win tonight. “If you want to make the playoffs, you’ve got to win those tight games. “The strength of our team came from the hustlers,” he added. One of those “hustlers” was
his brother Aaron, who had two huge hits, including a momentum-stealing blast in the overtime. Jarrett had some backhanded compliments for his brother. “He’s not known for that. His old man strength is starting to set in,” he observed. Aaron is 30. “Usually it’s him on the other end – receiving those hits,” continued Jarrett. “He puts in a lot of work in the off-season, so it’s nice to see him throw the weight around a little.” Gill said the offence gen-
erated good looks, but there wasn’t enough finish. “We hit seven, eight, nine posts – we were getting our chances,” he said. “We can’t let people hang around. We had them where we wanted them, at 4-1.” He praised the work of goaltender Carson Michaud, who was the backup last year, and is slated to back up firstround pick Scigliano this year. But Michaud went off hopping on one foot with 3:23 left in overtime – just as Nanaimo was about to pull its goaltender to try and tie the game.
It was on third stringer Jeremy Funk to come in cold and preserve the win. “He wasn’t expecting to go in, but he did his job, and stopped two balls – good for him,” said Gill Mallory had two goals and an assist in the game, and Andrew Murphy had three assists. In the WLA’s first game of the year, the Coquitlam Adanacs beat the Langley Thunder 9-7 on Saturday. Now Langley is in Maple Ridge, at Cam Neely Arena in Planet Ice, on Sunday at 6:45 p.m.

We thought of you today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name. All we have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, from which we will never part. God has you in His arms, we have you in our hearts. We will never stop loving and missing you

Plain white isn’t your only option when it comes to decorating your ceiling
By Kerry Vital When renovating a home, it’s often the flooring that gets all the attention. However, the ceiling should be equally important. Boring white is not your only option! “There are no hard rules in decorating,” says Bev Bell, creative director for the BeautiTone Paint and Home Products Division at Home Hardware. “Take a cue from Michelangelo. He saw ceilings as a canvas!”

Making life easier with home automation By Kerry Vital Imagine being able to turn on your lights before you get home, or checking on your home security system while on vacation. Home automation not only makes everyday tasks easier, it can also make for a simpler life. “It’s important to determine what you want, based on your end goal,” says Lee Rente, president of Encore Security and Automation. “Do you want it to automate audio? Visual? A security system? Your lights? It’s possible to do all of those things and more.” Control4 is one of the most popular home automation systems and is able to be installed in both existing and new construction homes. “It’s a scalable system,” says Rente. “You can start small and expand as you go. Every piece you add can be utilized as you expand the system. Everything works as one to create a larger, stronger system.” Light switches and dimmers are particularly popular items, and can make a big difference. Rente notes that having the lights turn on when you enter your home at night is one of the most-requested options, and can be accomplished with any automated switch or dimmer. “Any light switch can be swapped out for an automated one,” he says. “There are also a variety of wireless controls and sensors, so your home doesn’t have to be pre-wired.” Having a good installer when dealing with putting home automation into a renovation project is paramount. “Your system will be as good as your installer’s vision,” says Rente. “That vision is important because the installer needs to have the ability to see what the project can be when dealing with a
retrofit.” Because home automation can be controlled via wireless devices such as your iPad or smartphone, it is also important to have a good network. “You will run into a lot more issues with a cheap entry-level router than if you have a quality router,” says Rente. “You really have to rely on the strength of your wireless network with home automation.” The integral part of a home automation system is the home controller, which Rente calls “the brain.” “It will tell everything else what to do, how to do it and when to do it,” he says.
“Everything else depends on it. You’ll also need an interface, whether it’s an app or a touchscreen.” A remote control is also a handy addition, allowing you to use a single remote for all of your devices instead of having to keep track of multiple pieces. Installing home automation into an existing home can be more work and will take longer than it would to install it during construction, but Rente says not to let that deter you. “If you plan out the project and can use your existing wires and other technology, it doesn’t have to be hard,” he says.
Home automation can be installed in both new homes and existing homes, and can be controlled via smartphone or a dedicated touchscreen. Many things in your home can be automated, from televisions to light switches to your security system. Photos courtesy of Control4

Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association celebrating spring and summer By Kerry Vital The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is celebrating spring and summer with a variety of events for Metro Vancouver residents. The first will take place on May 24. The GVHBA’s annual Spring Home Renovation Show, in partnership with FortisBC, will be held at VanDusen Gardens this year. “Here at the GVHBA, we know the importance of working with certified professionals,” says CEO Bob de Wit. “There are a lot of fly-by-night contractors who may appear to be offering a deal upfront, but working in a cash-only environment can leave homeowners exposed when things go wrong. Working with RenoMark-certified renovators ensures your investment is protected.” The Ask a Pro consultation is back at the event, and will offer homeowners the chance to sign up and meet with a RenoMark renovator to discuss their project. Visitors to the show can also take part in free 20-minute seminars that will take place throughout the day, including Kitchen Design Trends, Designing for Small Spaces, Heritage Renovations and many more. “Advanced planning and working with experienced professionals will be your best protection,” says de Wit. “Considering you are renovating one of your greatest investments, your home, it makes sense to only work with the pros.” Entry to the show is free, but pre-registration at www.gvhba.org or via phone at 778-565-4288
is required. You’re also asked to bring a non-perishable item for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. The GVHBA will hold its 21st annual Parade of Renovated Homes on June 8 between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. The public is invited to tour professionally renovated homes in Metro Vancouver, including whole-house transformations, interior upgrades and kitchen makeovers. The event is produced by the GVHBA Renovation Council and sponsored by FortisBC. “Professional RenoMark renovators, many of them award-winners, will be on-site to offer expert advice and discuss their craftsmanship,” says de Wit. “Project values range widely, offering homeowners an abundance of ideas they can incorporate into their own renovations.” Project descriptions and before-and-after photos are available on the GVHBA website. The projects are located all over the Lower Mainland. Admission is by passport, which can be purchased at each home for $10 each, with children 17 and under admitted for free. Purchasing a passport will give you access to all of the homes on the tour. Part of the proceeds will help fund the purchases of tools, building materials and safety gear for a carpentry training program at Guildford Park and Frank Hurt secondary schools in Surrey. For more information about these and other upcoming GVHBA events, visit www.gvhba.org.

Getting a spa experience at home Installing a freestanding tub in your ensuite or other bathroom will give you an extra touch of luxury. However, there are still certain things you need to keep in mind when choosing one. By Kerry Vital

Nothing feels as relaxing as getting home at the end of a long day and stepping into a deep soaker tub with a glass of wine or a good book. If you’re looking for an extra touch of luxury, consider installing a freestanding bathtub that would look right at home in a high-end spa. “Freestanding tubs are gaining popularity,” says Mary Jane Holberton, branch manager for Robinson Lighting and Bath in Calgary. “You want to soak your cares away and de-stress.” “We have seen a move from the more transitional bathroom style towards a contemporary esthetic with an ever-increasing desire for spa-like, zen bathrooms that are clean and easy to maintain, as well as accessible by design,” says Paula Coen,
director of marketing for Blu Bathworks. “We don’t see as many tubs set into large decks as we used to,” says Acri-Tec’s Helen Embury. There are many different styles of tubs, from the classic claw-foot to the modern pedestal. “People are looking for organic shapes in tubs,” says Julia Ilnitchi of Ambient Bathrooms, a trend she attributes to an update of the egg-shaped tubs of the past. “Freestanding tubs used to be geometric, very clean and simple lines,” Ilnitchi says. “That seems to have passed.” The tub is usually the star, but it’s equally important to choose the right faucet to fill it. And like other elements of the bathroom, tub faucet trends come and go. “It used to be fashionable to have sharp angles, but now they’re more linear but rounded,” says Ilnitchi.

Soaking your cares away and de-stressing “ from page. 6 “Digital faucets are growing in popularity in bathroom environments, moving away from mechanical operation to a more innovative, hygienic alternative,” says Coen. “The user can even operate their shower or tub faucet with their smartphone, and in terms of esthetic, aligns perfectly with the modern bathroom design with cool features such as LED lighting to indicate water temperature!” White is still a mainstay when it comes to tubs, whether they’re freestanding or not, often in a matte finish, according to Ilnitchi. “Sometimes we see coloured lights underneath,” she says. If you’re looking for something a bit more dramatic, there are freestanding tubs on the market in a variety of colours, including black, blue and red. Your creativity can flow freely! “While there is a tendency towards a minimalist esthetic in modern bathrooms, there are a variety of options

in it because of the lack of walls around it. No one wants to soak their entire bathroom. “You would probably need a ‘wet room’ to shower in that kind of tub,” says Ilnitchi. Something else that you need to keep in mind is the heaviness of the material used to construct the tub. “A stone tub would be very heavy,” says Ilnitchi. “Tubs made of acrylic are hollow and light. There’s also not a special requirement for solid surface tubs.” She also notes that homeowners need to leave at least four inches around each side of the tub. However, you don’t have to have a large single-family home to install a freestanding bathtub. “Increasingly, smaller freestanding bathtubs are becoming available to accommodate condo-sized bathrooms with space limitations,” says Coen.

Firing up the barbecue for the summer
www.mapleridgenews.com - THE NEWS -- Wednesday, May 21, 2014 -- B9
By Kerry Vital Outdoor grilling is a time-honoured tradition. Firing up that barbecue can herald the start of summer and a return to spending a lot of time outside with friends and family. Perhaps you’re in the market for something new this year; happily, you’ll find a lot of choices. “Many people are now looking at products that make their lives easier, so less work is better,” says Darren Widas, sales representative at Trail Appliances Vancouver. “Many grills on the market still have cast-iron grates, and although great from a cooking perspective, they can rust over the winter. Stainless-steel grates are much easier to maintain and require very little, if any, maintenance.” The barbecue itself will also be available in a wide variety of sizes. “It is best to choose something that fits your cooking needs as well as the space you are planning on putting it in,” Widas says. Options abound when choosing new wall tiles for your space By Kerry Vital

Like most home renovations, choosing new wall tile for your kitchen or bathroom can be both a fun experience and a stressful one. Options abound, and it can be tough to know where to start; no one wants their space to look dated too quickly. However, there are some things that never go out of style and will continue to look good for many years. “We’re seeing a lot more larger-format tiles for walls right now,” says Lawrence Pham of Fontile Kitchen & Bath. “Twelve by 36 is common.” Pham attributes this to trends in other products that are hitting the market. “Modern TV screens are becoming elongated,” he says. “It’s similar to that concept.” However, installing larger tiles doesn’t have Classic white tiles are still on-trend, especially in the bathroom. Something to keep in mind when to be more costly. choosing new wall tile is to get a good installer, as a mistake could be very costly. “People see large format tiles and think the Photos submitted by Fontile Kitchen & Bath costs will increase, but that’s not always the case,” says Pham. “It depends on the materials. Ceramic tiles are the most cost-effective.” If ceramic tiles aren’t your style, there are a variety of beautiful stone options on the market right now. “Marble, limestone and travertine are still trends,” Pham says. He also notes the increased popularity of tapestry-style tiles in art deco patterns. “Styles are a throwback, but modernized now,” he says. “For example, the tiles you would see in an old-school pizza place” are popular right now. “Styles come and go,” says Pham. “We’ve seen warm matte whites for a clean look recently.” The most important tip that Pham gives homeowners is to get the help of a professional. “First and foremost, get a good installer,” says Pham. “It can be a nightmare if you have a bad one. Definitely check credentials before you hire someone.” He also suggests doing plenty of research as to what you’re looking for, and to remember that you get what you pay for.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to ceiling decor

While white is a classic and still the most popular, adding a splash of colour to the ceiling might be just what your lighting will be very different. The same colour on a wall and a ceiling will look different as the room needs. But how do you choose which colour? walls are hit with more light. “There are a couple of simple colour premises, that when “The trick to ending up with a ceiling colour followed, help to create a harmonious look in a room,” says true to what you want is to make sure to hold Bell. “Cool and light colours recede, warm and darker colours the colour sample over your head,” Bell says. advance.” “That way the light will hit it the same way it When used on a ceiling, a light colour will make the ceiling will once the colour is painted on the ceiling.” appear higher, while a dark colour will make it look lower. Something that you should keep in mind Another way to make a ceiling look higher or lower is to paint however is that a ceiling is rarely perfect, and thus Bell recommends choosing a flat paint in order to hide some of the imperfections. If you’re looking for something a bit different, try putting wallpaper on the ceiling. “People are learning that wallpaper doesn’t have to be just for walls,” says Anita Modha, owner and CEO at ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper. “Part of the allure of putting wallpaper on the ceiling is the texture and design.” Modha notes that bright and bold colours are the most popular for ceilings, but it depends on the room it’s being installed in. For example, a living room might be a better place to do something bold and graphic, while a quieter pattern would be more suited to a bedroom. “You want to make sure it’s something that you don’t mind looking at every morning,” says Modha. “You don’t want to be startled Whether it’s a coat of paint or wallpaper, a pop of colour on the ceiling can make a when you wake up!” room much more interesting. One advantage of putting wallpaper on a Photos submitted by Beauti-Tone ceiling is that it’s not a permanent change.

“It can be a really great way to change a space quite quickly,” Modha says. However, she also recommends making sure that the work is done by a professional installer, especially when it comes to the ceiling. A very high ceiling would need to involve scaffolding, which is not something that most homeowners will want to deal with on their own. Tin ceilings are another trend that is coming back. Originally popular in the Victorian era as an inexpensive alternative to plaster, peel-and-stick tin ceiling tiles are now available in a range of intricate designs that still mirror their humble origins. Wood planks installed on the ceiling might seem like you’re turning the room upside-down, but they’re also great for adding texture to a space. Beadboard can give you a similar look. “It takes just a few dollars to transform a room from lovely to ‘wow,’” Bell says. “Don’t overlook those ceilings because they really do add a lot to the whole look of your home.”
