Running with with passion A

Kevin laird Reporting

All Kevin Mennie wanted to do was teach a group of Chinese high schools students how to run a halfmarathon, but the challenges that stood before him appeared daunting and unpredictable

ll eyes are on Kevin Mennie as he slowly moves his arm in a deliberate pendulum

motion. Standing on the spot, Mennie then bends one leg 90 degrees to hip height then repeats with the other. When he is done, he turns to his students and asks them to do the same. In unison, the students repeat the drill. Mennie nods in agreement. “This is proper running form,” he tells them. “This will help you in your half-marathon. But if you don’t do it correctly, you’ll have trouble running the long distance.” For Mennie, the last year and a half working at a B.C. offshore school in Shanghai, China has been a learning experience too. The Victoria resident arrived on the shores of China to teach B.C.’s high school curriculum at a domestic Chinese school. It was a year of firsts. Within months, Mennie was training and competing in what is considered one of the most difficult endurance races in the world: the Great Wall of China Marathon. It would be a lifechanging experience for Mennie, not just the race but in what would transpire afterwards. As he trained for the marathon, students and teachers were fixated daily on his antics on the track at speed drills, tempo training and fartlek runs. After all, physical education is almost frowned upon in China, where academic achievement comes before all else. Mennie finished the grueling race in just under five hours and calls it “one of the biggest challenges of my life.” (Back

iving in China, you soon learn that Chinese traditions play an integral role in everyday life. It is at the core of Chinese culture and revolves around values and how people interact with each other. It’s this sense of tradition that put Fung and Mennie on a collision course with the school administration. “The school (administrators) told us that students don’t run half-marathons and it’s never been done before and shouldn’t be done now,” Mennie recalls. “Within a few weeks, (the school administration) didn’t want us using the track, and said it wouldn’t endorse the race.” School administrators continued to up the ante. They said the students would die if they ran a half-marathon and called a parents’ meeting to discuss it. Please see: School officials frown, Page A8

Victoria Harbour Ferry ‘water ballet’ performs in the Inner Harbour. It’s the 22nd season the tiny boats will thrill tourists and Victoria residents alike.

‘Water ballet’ returns to Inner Harbour Victoria Harbour Ferry hit the water for the 22nd Harbour Ferry Water Ballet season on Sunday. The 10-minute water ballet showcases the agility of iconic boats and the ballet captains’ practiced ability to manoeuvre their vessels in sync to a select ballet song in the Inner Harbour. Every Sunday morning from May through September, five green Harbour Ferries line up at the Causeway Marina and perform for hundreds of onlookers. The complex “dance steps” – which combine military marching and RCMP Musical Ride

manoeuvres, as well as a touch of creative choreography – requires the Ballet Captains to practice weekly. During the performance, the Captains cannot even hear the music and rely solely on the Ballet Leader to shout out turn sequences. With over 300 performances and tens of thousands of onlookers, the ballet remains the world’s only water ferry ballet. New this year is the addition of a Saturday ballet in July and August. editor@vicnews.com

Nominations demonstrate high esteem for teachers

CRD sewage price jumps Capital Regional District directors have voted to add another $5.2 million to the $783-million secondary sewage treatment project. The additional cash will pay for an oxidization process to further reduce the concentration of pharmaceuticals, personal care products and household cleaners in sewage waste. The project pricetag is now slated at about $788 million. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak has so far refused to intervene in the project after Esquimalt rejected zoning for a wastewater treatment plant at McLoughlin Point. At a CRD meeting May 14, Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins asked that the Seaterra project be put on hold for six months or until CRD gets a definitive answer from Polak, a vote that was delayed until next month.

Over the past six weeks, we’ve spoken with numerous people about the role of school teachers and the positive impact they have in our communities. Through a series of stories published in Black Press’ community newspapers, we’ve prompted readers to think about the excellent educators in their schools and nominate them for recognition through our Great Teachers campaign. Co-presented by Staples’ School Tools and supported by Thrifty Foods, Great Teachers is a way of honouring individuals who are making a difference with their work inside and outside the classroom. “We are in the final days of

It’s a great way to end the school year and concentrate on the positive impact of teachers and how schools are the core of community life.” Readers nominating teachers at vicnews.com/contests have used such words as “positive relationship,” “significant impact,” “patient and kind,” “leader” and “above and beyond” to describe nominees. The submissions are inspiring and indicate the high regard in which teachers are held. Ralf Mundel, senior director of marketing and communications for Thrifty Foods, says teachers are “vital to the fabric of our communities” and help kids become rounded individuals. “Think back on your childhood, or ask your kids about their most impactful memories and generally something about a teacher ranks high on that list. That’s powerful,” he says. For Thrifty’s, which frequently

GUEST COMMENT

Are we allergic to global warming? David Suzuki Special to the News

Spring is a time of rebirth: blossoms and greenery emerge as cold and snow give way to warmer temperatures and longer days. It can also kick off a season of sneezing, headaches and itchy, watery eyes. Like a growing number of people, I’m allergic to tree pollen. Many say their symptoms have worsened over the years. They’re probably right. We’ve upset the Earth’s carbon cycle by burning fossil fuels and destroying forests and wetlands. Plants help rebalance it by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. A warming planet also means longer growing seasons and stimulated plant growth in many areas. And rising atmospheric CO2 actually increases pollen production. Add to that the extreme weather impacts of climate change that can exacerbate allergy symptoms and other respiratory problems (rain and higher temperatures create more moulds and fungi in some places; more dust contributes to allergies and asthma in drought-stricken areas), plus the all-around increases in ground-level ozone, smoke and pollution, and you’ve got a recipe for mass discomfort, illness, death and rising health care costs. U.S. research shows the pollen season there has lengthened by about 16 days since 1995 and the ragweed season by anywhere from a day to 16 days, with greater increases moving north. The Public Health Agency of Canada says ragweed season here is close to a month longer than in 1995 because of warming temperatures. We still don’t fully understand the multiple impacts of global warming on allergies, or what else may be contributing to the problem. Doing all we can to prevent climate change from getting worse won’t do much for allergies this season or next, but in the long run, it will make life easier for all of us, and our children and grandchildren. After all, this isn’t about plants being bad for people. We can’t live without them. It’s more about the natural systems that keep us alive and healthy being put out of whack by our reckless behaviour. Victoria Footprints The passion for China continued when Kevin Mennie returned to Canada in January. Although Canada and China have two very distinct cultures, Mennie wondered why more Canadian teens weren’t running half-marathons. After all, plenty have run 10-kilometre races. Enter Victoria Footprints. Taking the success of Shanghai Footprints, Mennie approached his former school St. Andrew’s Regional High School, where he was athletic director, and asked if he could present his idea to a school assembly. Eighty kids signed up right away, but that soon dwindled to 30, and by the time the TC10K half-marathon rolled around only four took part in the race. “Although the numbers weren’t there, there was a lot interest,” Mennie says. “And it will grow.”

the race. Again Fung and Mennie were told they could not give a presentation. As the meeting wrapped up, Mennie could no longer hold his tongue and gave his thoughts on the running group and the half-marathon. Slowly the administration started leaving the building one by one. By the end, it was Mennie and Fung answering parents questions. “We reaffirmed with the parents what was going on and they started getting onboard and that’s when we realized this is a lot bigger now, because the parents were behind us.” The subtle harassment, however, didn’t end: students were asked to steal runners’ lists from Mennie’s office; running signs were taken down; physical education teachers

would set up soccer shooting drills on the track while the runners practised; the teachers would abruptly hold fabricated exercise days on the track, working out in business suits no less, to interrupt the running. “I thought the biggest challenge would be making these kids who aren’t runners be able to believe and do a halfmarathon. My biggest worry was someone getting injured. I didn’t want to hurt them. I didn’t even think about the other part, and once it started, it was relentless,” Mennie recalls.

in the race. (Ten were classified under age and couldn’t register.) For the under-age students, Mennie made up bibs and slipped the students into the race without notice, although they couldn’t qualify for medals. Mennie and Fung began loading their runners, adorned in bright pink shirts, on buses – rented privately – at 5 a.m. off school property. The plan was to get the students to the start line early and ready to go. One teacher would be stationed at the finish line in case any student got into injury trouble or couldn’t finish the race. Mennie ran with the lead group until the 12K mark. After that, he dashed back and forth on the race course running with students and encouraging them. Only one of the 70 students was unable to complete the race due to injury. The first runner crossed the line at the 1:38 mark. The last runner, who stumbled with just 20 metres to go, finished with a 3:30 time. “It was a moving experience, especially what we had to do to get here,” Mennie says. A few weeks after the marathon, a gala was held to honour the students. The runners, family and friends attended. It was an exciting evening. The 10 underage students received medals after Mennie told his friends about their plight. They put money together to buy each student a medal. “People all over the world knew what was going on with these kids,” says Mennie. “My family and friends knew and a lot of other people too.” While there was plenty of excitement centred around the event, Mennie was keeping a secret. He wasn’t returning for another school year. “At that point, I knew I wasn’t coming back,” Mennie says. “I knew I rocked the boat. “These were kids just dying for something. They wanted a chance to do something other than study. It’s been life-changing.” klaird@blackpress.ca

Safety Tip: As high school seniors prepare for graduation, it’s important that parents make sure their teens are also planning for a side ride home after all of their festivities. Grads often treat themselves to limousine rides but make sure they have a plan if they’ll be going to any other celebrations.

BMW X5:Changes stable but significant Zack Spencer

This all-new BMW X5 is the latest version of the mid-sized luxury SUV that helped the manufacturer expand into markets beyond those where luxury, performance sedans reside. Some younger readers might not remember a time when BMW, and other German makers, didn’t have SUVs. But it wasn’t too long ago that the original X5 came out and transformed the Bavarian automaker into more of a full-line manufacturer. Ever since they started making SUVs, their sales have not retreated.

BMW HANDOUT

As is stands right now, the X5 combines two classes of SUV, the mid-size five-seat market and the seven-seat market. Truth be told, this should really be looked at as a five-seater, there will be a new, bigger seven passenger BMW coming in the next year or so. Looks When you look at this new model, it is instantly recognizable with just small changes such as more accent lines. I had a chance to park it next to the smaller X3 and, other than the front grille and headlights, they share a striking resemblance to Follow us at:

torque. And this thing flies, it is so fast and stable, it makes this big rig dance in every situation. In addition, there are various driving modes that set up the engine’s response, the steering feel and the suspension stiffness. Even in the most relaxed setting, this V8 engine is always up to a quick passing manouevre. Yes this is a blast to drive but 445hp is maybe too much. For gasoline buyers the 3.0L six-cylinder turbo model is more practical. With 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the XDrive 35 can make a run to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds. Not bad for a 6-cylinder. The XDrive 35d turbo diesel should prove to be the most popular. The 3.0L diesel has 413 lb.-ft. or torque and sips fuel. The diesel X5 can make a run to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds but achieves just 8.7L/100km in mixed city and highway driving. All models come with an eightspeed automatic to help get the most out of each litre of fuel. Verdict X5 models can be equipped with several different packages like sport packages, luxury packages and more. So starting at $63,000 and up, the base price can be a bit misleading. This is an expensive product but a superbly well designed and engineered one. To be honest, other than the price, there is a lot to like here, this is a great BMW. It is so well put together, it drives superbly and it comes with three equally good engines. If you are in the market for a big luxury SUV, the new X5 does a lot right. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

each other, this is just a bigger version of that wildly popular SUV. All X5 models come standard with 19-inch wheels but BMW packages their products to be offered with bigger wheels depending on whether they want the sport package or not. Around the back, the same clamshell lift gate found on the last two versions remains intact. The top flips up and the bottom drops down. It makes it a reach to get inside the cargo area but many owners like this feature for sliding items in and out and being able to sit on the tailgate. Inside The inside of the X5 is a study in small changes that pay big dividends. The centre screen is huge, the iDrive controller is bigger and navigating around this system is much easier than it has been in past versions. The materials used inside the cabin are first rate. The wide and relatively flat dash makes the cabin feel huge and the big comfortable seats make for an effortless place to spend time. As mentioned, the X5 can be equipped with a third row of seats but they are not that great for space, the GL-Class from Mercedes is a better option. When equipped with five seats the cargo space is vast. Drive There are three different version of the X5, two that are very popular and the V8 version that is almost overkill. My test unit was the Xdrive 50 and it’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine. This produces a whopping 445hp and 479 lb.-ft. of

VICTORIA NEW S

YEAR

press briefing would take place. On the way, the adventure took us through a section of the F1 Grand Prix track; hairpins, winding roads and silky smooth tarmac paved the way. For a moment, I felt like a champion. The Bologna-based brand’s revised sport cruiser is one that commands attention. Even if you don’t want to look, its black hole-like nature won’t let your gaze escape. Besides, you’ve already been hooked by its exhaust note and the mellifluous sound from its 1,198 cc engine, so it’s too late to even attempt to look away. Within moments of parking these bikes, crowds amassed. Never mind the Porsche GT2 RS a few metres away. Never mind the Ferrari California with pristine paint and glimmering rims. Ducatis steal all the attention. Styling-wise, they have matured since

its introduction in 2012. Though it is immediately recognizable, it has been tweaked. There’s now full LED illumination, a new headlamp cover and mounting and more. Giving it the strong road presence that it has is its commanding and bulbous body, matched with a 240 rear tire; a tire that was specifically made in conjunction with Pirelli for the Diavel. Though it might look like a handful, it’s not. And if a “handful” was measured in weight, you’re only looking at, or handling, 205 kg (452 lbs.) Speaking of hands, its handling is quite superb. Taking on the twisty roads won’t leave you scraping pegs like other cruisers. With three modes (sport, touring and urban) to channel the 162 horsepower (100 hp if you’re in urban mode) from Ducati’s new Testastretta 11° DS engine, it won’t take off on you without your consent. With crowds taking photos of this beautiful beast, and asking to take a photo with it, I couldn’t see any other vehicles generating such fervor. It generates even more zeal when on the open road. But for now, the temporary celebrity status that these bikes bring are a welcome change from the norm. And knowing that an item that costs at least 10 times less than the vehicular ornamentation perfectly placed in Monte Carlo – the Diavel carbon white model has an MSRP of $21,995) could be considered cheap thrills, right? I guess it’s all relative. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Everywhere you look, wealth abounds. The parking spaces in front of the Hotel de Paris and Casino Monte Carlo, Monaco, are filled with vehicles no less than $200K. I feel a lot out of place. Ferraris, Maseratis, Bentleys, Porsches, Bugattis (yes plural) and other exotic vehicles seem to be a dime a dozen. Even the taxis are premium makes and models. The occasional “affordable” vehicle (like a 3 Series BMW or an Audi A5) manifests itself, but they already know they won’t be getting the premiere parking spots. So how do you get noticed in an area where such opulent sheet metal resides? A place where spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a vehicle is the unwritten rule, and even that might not be enough for a second glance. The answer is simple: the 2015 Ducati Diavel. You can hear one coming from a mile away (sorry, 1.60934 kilometres if we are to be continentally correct). The devilish Ducati, even with the stock exhaust – which is new for the 2015 model year – could easily conjure sinister thoughts. The low-note grumble and throaty belligerence characterizes the twin pipes that are aggressive yet sublimely pleasing to the ears. Now imagine amplifying that sound by more than 30. A flock of carbon white-trimmed Diavels set out to congregate in the main plaza of Monte Carlo where our

WHY PAY MORE? DRIVE A LITTLE, SAVE A LOT!

As a busy mom and running my own business as a counsellor at “Insight to Action Counselling Services”, I need to have a reliable vehicle and also access to a loaner vehicle when work is being done to my car. My family has purchased two vehicles from Galaxy Motors. One for myself and one for my husband after he was in an accident that wrote off his previous car. I have found the staff to be professional and friendly and also efficient. They have a great service center that provides thorough explanations of the work being done and future work that may be necessary. The staff is not pushy on the sales side OR in the service department. I also appreciated that there was an insurance person there when we purchased so that we didn’t have to run around town.”

Bell Prostate Ezee Flow Tea #4a

Men have relief in 3-5 days from dribbling, burning and rushing to the toilet. Relaxes blood flow for better erections. Helps also with male incontinence. Works in virtually every case. If you are considering surgery, try this tea first. Hundreds of delighted men testifying on our web site: æHad to get up every hour at night. Now I get up once a night. Joseph Whittaker, Sewell, NJ æ I cancelled my prostate surgery. Get up once a night. I'm so happy not to have to face the torment of a prostate operation and possible incontinence and impotence. Albert E. Blain, 74, Schumacher, ON æEven after TURP prostate surgery and microwave therapy had to get up many times. Now down to 1-2 times. Tea is 100% better than drugs. Robert G. Stocker, Eustasis, FL æAfter 1st year drinking tea my PSA went down to 4.5; after 2nd year to 2.9; after 3rd year to 2.3. I highly recommend the tea. A real life saver. Thomas M. Thurston, Forsyth, GA <Women suffering with incontinence, #4a NPN 80022782 bladder infections, UTIs ask for Bladder Control Tea for Women #4b. Guaranteed relief within days.

Allergies are a modern epidemic

By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD. What people experience: <I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered Bell Allergy Relief. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB < For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure year-round on most days. I was amazed. On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, #24 NPN 80043542 25, Dover, OH <Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Richard Gamez, 74, San Antonio, TX morning. Therese Noto, 58, New York, NY.

SNORING? SLEEP APNEA?

As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall a sleep. In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. What people truly experience: < I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally #23 NPN 80045172 Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model was first conceived in 2008 but still looks very futuristic. It is one of 17 concept cars from across Europe and the US to be displayed at “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The GINA Light Visionary Model features a virtually seamless outer skin, consisting of a flexible fabric material stretched over

a movable substructure. Furthermore, functions are only enabled when they are actually needed. The most striking example of this is the headlight design. In normal position, when the headlights are not active, they are hidden under the special fabric cover. As soon as the driver turns on the lights, the contour of the front end changes. drivewaybc.ca

The ‘Holy Grail’ of West Coast sailing Arnold Lim News staff

Vern Burkhardt just can’t stay off the water, but he isn’t the only one. Approximately 200 boats set sail May 24 to 26 for the 71st annual Swiftsure International Yacht Race where Burkhardt says the scenery takes centre stage. “It’s the largest race in the Pacific Northwest and racers get together to exchange tales and catch up with each other once a year,” Burkhardt said. “Few vistas are like the downtown Inner Harbour of Victoria that are so beautiful and create a festival atmosphere for racers to come and enjoy.” The chair of the race for four years has been an avid participant as well, having raced in all but four events since 1977, and 2014 is no different. The veteran sailor said there is just something about the annual event that keeps him coming back for more and fellow racer Stuart Dahlgren agrees. “It is the one, it is the one that has the prestige,” he said. “It’s the holy grail of sailing around here. There are other races that are more challenging and harder to win but Swiftsure has the caché.” Boats from as far as Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver join Island boats including the Westerly, a 70-foot long Santa Cruz boat Dahlgren and a crew of 16 will race in the longest and most challenging course in the event, the Swiftsure Lightship Classic. The 240 kilometre race from Clover Point, to Swiftsure Bank to the finish at Ogden Point could see the entire crew stay up for 15 to 16 hours straight, or see the them take shifts sleeping if they expect a longer

than a 24 hour trip. It will be challenging, he said, but worth it in the end. “I think this is one of the coolest team sports out there. The truest team sport. Not all jobs on the boats are glamorous, but every job needs to get done and someone needs to do it.” His strategy comes down to the sailing conditions, and it is that challenge, along with the tight competition from the calibre of boats and seamanship he doesn’t see at many races, that Dahlgren is looking

forward to testing himself against. He hopes people will come out to watch the event, including the myriad of festival activities for people of all ages surrounding the races in and around the Inner Harbour – and see the sport for what it is. Not the exclusive club of wealthy businessmen showing off expensive boats, but an inclusive group of people, some of whom don’t own a boat, that just love to be out at sea. If nothing else, spectators should

come to witness the race start which is a spectacle to behold, he said. “The start … if there is any breeze, is a very impressive thing. It’s a lot of mass and a lot of dollars moving at a high speed in close quarters. There is a lot of chance of thrills and spills that people love,” he said. “(That) and the shockingly beautiful backdrop of the Olympic Mountains, it is a gorgeous place we live in and a great way to see it.” alim@vicnews.com

4,574/4,783 Greater Victorians are no stranger to strange homes. Narrow livin’ – In 1994 Joe Loiacono built a 1,200-square-foot house that measures only 10-feet wide. After a failed attempt to have his setbacks reduced on the 25-foot-wide lot, Loiacono built the twobedroom home to code at 244 Cadillac Avenue in Saanich. Apparently his neighbours weren’t impressed. DID YOU KNOW? | Not a single nail was used in the construction of Oldfield’s circular steel structure.

Unique homes require unique buyers Basil Oldfield’s historic home among the region’s most off-beat

Basil “Barney” Oldfield’s rotating house was built in 1977 and can still turn at the flick of a switch today. Inset: Rob Oldfield, co-owner of the home would like to see the piece of history stay in the family, along with the family business, Prospect Lake Garage, which Barney co-founded back in 1934.

ANOTHER UNUSUAL HOME

NEWS

Tucked away on the top of Saanich Mountain sits an unimaginably cool home. A break in the firs off Old West Saanich Road opens to its curious three-storey spherical structure. That this place was envisioned and expertly crafted by one man in the ‘70s is cool, but that it still revolves at the flick of a switch – unimaginably so. The owners reject the notion of selling the piece of local history. If the family were to put it on the market, as with any unique home, however, they would be facing certain challenges. “Unique means just that, and you need a unique buyer,” says Greater Victoria Real Estate Board president-elect Guy Crozier. “Value is directly related to supply and demand. If you have a lower demand, it could mean a lower value or a long search for the unique buyer for a unique home.” The visionary behind the house bears a family name well-known in the area: Basil “Barney” Oldfield. Though Basil has been gone since 1978, the lore he created with his revolutionary designs and somewhat off-beat ways remains. His nephew, Rob Oldfield now runs the family business, Prospect Lake Garage Inc., founded by Basil and his brother Brian Oldfield in 1934. At the garage, just a few kilome-

tres down the road from the roundhouse, framed photos of Brian and Basil grace the top shelf behind the counter. Rob greets customers, recalls his uncle’s ways and offers what he can about the home – an in-progress project which only Basil understood. “He was sort of his own fellow,” Rob says. “He never got married; never had children, just puttered on his own up there and cut his own hair.” The building began in the mid’60s, and was to include an elevator. Basil fell ill with cancer before that could happen, but the home remains a mechanical marvel. Through a carport door beneath the home, its circular cellar reveals the heart of the house’s rotating mechanism. Doors marked with a high voltage warning conceal water and sewage pipes and presumably the three-quarter horsepower electric motor from a car transmission and two gear boxes. Shafts from the gear boxes propel

rubber wheels on a metal track overhead. The robust thing of beauty is able to run at two speeds: low gear yields a oncedaily revolution; high gear will take you 360 degrees in just three minutes. Unlike other revolving structures, which tend to have a stationary centre, the entire welded steel frame structure rotates. Electricity is transferred through brushes in constant contact with the wheel. “How do you figure that sort of thing out in the 1950s and ‘60s?” Rob says. “No nails was his claim to fame, so it’s kind of a noisy house to live in because when you step on the outside porch, you step on the metal and the whole thing kind of moves a bit because it’s sitting on wheels.” The noise isn’t a factor for its inhabitants. One couple, Cathy Cook and Francis Sullivan, have called Basil’s home their own since

moving to Victoria in 1989. “It’s pretty wild,” Sullivan says. “When you think about the number of welds that went into this place, the amount of metal.” Sullivan is impressed by the craftsmanship, but clearly the novelty of living in a two-bedroom, one-bath home that rotates has faded. It’s the seclusion of the area that has kept the two long-term, though flicking the switch labelled “HOUSE” is a more of party trick he hasn’t forgotten. “After 25 years, it’s not a big deal anymore,” Sullivan says. “But it’s amazing that it still works after all these years.” And Rob would like to see it stay within the family for many years to come. If Basil’s great-niece, 22-year-old Christi Oldfield is any indication, there will be demand for creative living well into the future. “It’s important to me as an Oldfield to keep (the house) in the family,” Christi says. “I think it’s the coolest thing.” nnorth@saanichnews.com

Restoring a rare Mustang to magnificence Everybody remembers their first car but very few people hold onto that set of wheels long into adult life. Tsawwassen resident Laura Ballance still has her 1967 Ford Mustang T5 but it has not turned a tire in years and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Safety Tip: As high school seniors prepare for graduation, it’s important that parents make sure their teens are also planning for a side ride home after all of their festivities. Grads often treat themselves to limousine rides but make sure they have a plan if they’ll be going to any other celebrations.

BMW X5:Changes stable but significant As is stands right now, the X5 combines two classes of SUV, the mid-size five-seat market and the seven-seat market. Truth be told, this should really be looked at as a five-seater, there will be a new, bigger seven passenger BMW coming in the next year or so. Looks When you look at this new model, it is instantly recognizable with just small changes such as more accent lines. I had a chance to park it next to the smaller X3 and, other than the front grille and headlights, they share a striking resemblance to

Zack Spencer

This all-new BMW X5 is the latest version of the mid-sized luxury SUV that helped the manufacturer expand into markets beyond those where luxury, performance sedans reside. Some younger readers might not remember a time when BMW, and other German makers, didn’t have SUVs. But it wasn’t too long ago that the original X5 came out and transformed the Bavarian automaker into more of a full-line manufacturer. Ever since they started making SUVs, their sales have not retreated.

201 3

YOUR HEALTH President’s own story: 15 years ago I started to have arthritis, prostate, kidney, snoring and sleep apnea problems, which were all helped quickly with natural health products. I made it my life’s purpose to help others. Nick A. Jerch

I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore.

ACNE

Works by cleaning blood from the inside, instead of attacking skin with creams or washes from the outside and leaving actual cause untreated. Actual Results. <After 1 week my severe acne became quite mild and after 2 weeks it had completely Eczema & Psoriasis vanished. I suffered for 5 stressful years of having acne and extremely dry, irritated skin. Bell Help for Skin Disorders“saved my life”. My skin is now beautiful and you would never know I suffered from acne and other skin problems for years. Zach Lustgarten, 18, Oshawa, ON RED NOSE/CHEEKS ROSACEA gone in less than a week. Was fighting it for 30 years with topical creams and prescriptions without getting satisfaction. I live a healthy life, don’t smoke and don’t drink. People thought a reddish face comes from drinking. This is a myth. Will take it for the rest of my life when needed. Donald E. Gillespie, 56, Innisfil, ON PSORIASIS<I had severe psoriasis over 95% of my body. Last 5 years I have stunned every doctor and dermatologist. I spent tons of money on remedies. After I got Bell Help for Skin Disorders, I’ve never seen anything work as fast in my life. Within 2 days I saw my skin clearing up. I’m #60 NPN 80044199 speechless. It was inexpensive compared with what I spent before.
