Katie Bartel The Progress Chilliwack’s graduation ceremonies are one of many school-based activities in jeopardy of being cut due to the escalated battle between teachers and the government. In response to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s one-day rotating strike starting next week, the government has said, if no deal is reached, all high school teachers will be locked out on June 25 and 26, and all teachers locked out on June 27. In a letter ssent to the union, teachu were also We’re not clear ers told, effective Monday, yet on what the they will not impact will be be allowed on school sites any time ~ SD33 supt. other than minutes Evelyn Novak 45 before and after school, and will not be permitted to interact with students during recess or lunch hour. What that means for Chilliwack is still unclear. “We’re not clear yet on what the impact will be,” said superintendent Evelyn Novak. “We recognize that certainly this does cause stress and anxiety for parents and students, and our staff as well … we’re going to try our best to continue on with as much normalcy as possible.” Still, Novak acknowledged several activities could be cut as a result. Overnight camping trips, year-end field trips, sporting activities, and graduation ceremonies included. “It’s disappointing for our students that those activities may not be occurring,” said Novak.

Transit trip planning goes high tech Taking the bus in the City of Chilliwack, District of Kent and Village of Harrison Hot Springs just got easier for anyone with access to a computer, tablet or smartphone thanks to the expansion of an online transit trip-planning tool. A new “Transit Trip Planner” was launched by Chilliwack MLA John Martin, Chilliwack Mayor and Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) Chair Sharon Gaetz and BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha, at the Chilliwack Library on Wednesday. It is a free service that makes trip planning quick and easy for everyone. ‘Biggest auction ever’ draws TV crew to Chilliwack If you’ve been waiting to get your hands a 2012 John Deere crawler tractor, or a Caterpillar wheel loader, Ritchie Bros. in Chilliwack will be the place to be next week. But expect a crowd. The auction house is hosting its largest auction to date at its Chilliwack location. More than 1,700 items will be on the block, drawing buyers from across North America and around the world. Also on hand will be a film crew from the television series Selling Big. After a very successful first sea-

son on Cottage Life, the documentary, produced by Mountain Road Productions, is now filming Season Two. Focusing on Ritchie Bros. customers, its employees and a whole lot of equipment, Selling Big tells the story of big machinery and big price tags. “This is most equipment we’ve ever sold in Chilliwack and the Selling Big TV crew will be on site to catch all the action,” said Adam Pruss, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. Highlights in the auction include a large selection of late model crushing equipment, as well as

construction, transportation, forestry, and agriculture equipment. Also up for sale will also be a large selection of construction, transportation and other equipment, as well as pickup trucks, cars, and recreation equipment. There will even be an 80-foot tug boat on auction which will be offered remotely from its Richmond marina location. Ritchie Bros.’auction site is located at 42275 Industrial Way, Chilliwack. The bidding starts Wednesday, May 28 at 8 a.m. The event is open to the public.

Would-be thief fails on his getaway A suspect who tried to rob a Chilliwack supermarket in the wee hours of Tuesday morning had no trouble getting in. But getting out? That was a problem. Chilliwack RCMP responded to a call at 3:20 a.m. in the 46,600 block of First Avenue. They found the store ransacked, but the front door to the business hadn’t been opened nor had any windows been broken. So how did the suspect get in? RCMP noticed a hole in the roof, above the cash register. After the Chilliwack Fire Department

Mt. Slesse middle school recently sent a group of students to Kenya to help build a school with Free The Children. The school, along with several others, has spent the year fundraising for the cause, including selling student designed shirts for Pink Shirt Day. Mt. Slesse middle school students help build a school in Kenya A group of Chilliwack students from Mt. Slesse middle school experienced Kenya to the fullest this March. A team of 18 students and teacher chaperones spent 11 days in Maasai Mara, Kenya helping an impoverished community build a new school through the Me to We program. For teacher Sandi Rae, it was one of the most rewarding experiences she’s had as a teacher. “This trip was the most meaningful activity I have ever done and I have done so many different

trips and conferences with my students over the years,” she said. “It was amazing to see what Free the Children has been able to build in the 10 years [it’s] been in Kenya.” This was the first trip of its kind for Chilliwack school district, sending students to a third-world country. Mt. Slesse hopes it won’t be the last. The school has already submitted a proposal for a follow-up Me to We trip for 2016. The destination: Nicaragua. “It is the country with the most

helped them onto the roof, they found the suspect, holed up in the attic and with no way to escape. “It turns out that his entry plan was better thought out than his exit strategy,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. “After dropping through the roof he was unable to get out due to a double locking mechanism on the front door of the business. Police were on the ground as well as the roof and made any sort of escape a challenge.” The 19 year old Chilliwack resident was arrested and later released with a promise to appear in court sometime in August.

Witnesses sought after man stabbed Chilliwack RCMP are looking for witnesses who may have seen a stabbing take place in the early hours of Tuesday morning. RCMP got a call at 5:05 a.m., bringing them to the 9,200 block of Young Road. RCMP say the victim was approached by a man who asked if he had a lighter. When the victim said he did not, the man demanded money and then stabbed him. The suspect is described as cau-

casian, between 25-35 years old, standing five-foot-10. He had a goatee and mustache and was wearing dark clothing. “This is a serious incident and police are looking for any information that can lead us to identifying a suspect,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. Anyone who may have info is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers (anonymously) at 1-800-2228477(TIPS).

Monster Truck returns After a week of relative quiet, monster truck mayhem will return to downtown Chilliwack Monday. The production schedule for “Monster Truck” – a big-budget live action/CGI film – lists three days of shooting, with activity expected to start at around 5 a.m. Monday to Wednesday.

The filming is the final of two segments slated for Chilliwack. Like the filming last week, extensive road closures are expected. The $100 million film, which will feature the likes of Amy Ryan, veteran actor Danny Glover, Lucas Till, and Jane Levy, is the biggest production to be filmed in Chilliwack.

on our students, especially the ones that are graduating,” said Byers. “We had this a couple of years ago where [graduating students] had to use their Grade 11 marks for their transcripts because teachers couldn’t mark exams. Are we going to run into the same thing we did before?” Chilliwack board of education is holding a special meeting Friday to determine next steps. The school district will be relaying the information through schools and its website Friday afternoon. The email clarification was in response to a news conference held Thursday morning by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. BCTF president Jim Iker told media the stop-work order will disrupt after-hours activities, including graduation ceremonies. He also said it may disrupt year-end report cards and marking of provincial exams for graduating students. BCPSEA did not address those claims in the email to the school district. Gord Byers, president of the Chilliwack District Parents’ Advisory Council, has already fielded calls from concerned parents. “I am really worried mostly about the impact this will have

lockout that prevents BCTF members from continuing to participate in such activities as graduation, sports, and awards events. If teachers choose not to participate in such activities, they do so as a result of their own decision.” Teachers super vising extended student field trips will also be exempted from the lockout provisions, and resulting loss of pay for the duration of the excursion. “Should a teacher withdraw from a previous field trip commitment, they do so as a result of their own decision,” the email said. The exemption, however, does not apply to new field trips, or trips of a minor nature where there is no financial penalty for cancellation.

Stone pledges public ‘input’ not veto on Massey tolls Jeff Nagel Black Press Transpor tation Minister Todd Stone won’t say whether the public will get a veto over possible tolls on a new bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel. The province hasn’t decided the scope or cost of the Highway 99 corridor project but Stone was asked by Black Press how he intends to get public approval for tolls if they’re to finance the promised new bridge. “If we end up going down the road of tolls on the George Massey Bridge, we would want to make sure that was well informed by the public in terms of some public input,” Stone responded Wednesday. He said the public engagement model used for the Port Mann/Highway 1 project is “one potential template.” Stone was referring to a series of public open houses and an online survey held in 2006, after which the province announced it had 56 per cent support of 2,300 consultation participants for its plan to toll the new Port Mann Bridge. Asked if the province would impose tolls anyway or abandon the

idea if the public opposes paying to cross a new Massey Bridge, Stone was non-committal. “It’s absolutely premature,” he said. “We don’t know if the desired funding model would be a tolled option.” One method of public approval Stone rules out is including Massey Bridge tolls to the referendum TransLink mayors are expected to seek on a package of TransLink projects and new taxes. “No, there’s no plan to link the two,” he said. Tolls have been contentious in much of the region and especially Surrey and Langley since the new Port Mann Bridge was tolled, leaving the aging Pattullo Bridge, the Alex Fraser and the Massey Tunnel as the only free routes.

That’s led to increased talk among Metro politicians and others of applying tolls consistently across the region or shifting to some form of road pricing – scenarios that are currently blocked by the provincial tolling policy. Stone confirmed the province will soon launch a review of the policy, which allows tolls only on new infrastructure and only when there’s a reasonable untolled alternate route. “It’s a matter of fairness and equity for folks who live South of the Fraser,” he said, noting possible tolls on replaced Massey and Pattullo crossings would leave the

Alex Fraser as Metro Vancouver’s only free bridge over the Fraser River and invalidate much of the provincial tolling policy. He said finishing touches are being put on the planned review as part of a new 10-year provincial transportation plan. Metro mayors still have to decide on a replacement of the Pattullo and whether it will be tolled, Stone added. As for the Massey Bridge/Highway 99 project, Stone said the province must decide how much highway improvement is needed on each side of the Deas Island crossing. He noted the replacement of the Port Mann Bridge was only $800 to $900 million of the much larger $3.3-billion project, which widened Highway 1 and replaced numerous interchanges. According to the ministry, construction of the new Massey Bridge is expected to start in 2017. Work is underway to develop a technical design and business case, which are to be released to the public later this year.

Turns out our commonly-Canadian busy lifestyle is the wrong way to encourage kids to move. “Our country values efficiency – doing more in less time – which may be at direct odds with promoting children’s health,” the report states. “We have engineered opportunities for spontaneous movement (such as getting to places on foot and playing outdoors) out of our kids’ daily lives, and have tried to compensate with organized activities such as dance recitals, soccer leagues and PE classes.” Well, let me park the car to tell you, I wholeheartedly disagree. For every organized sport we’ve tried, we’ve met numerous volunteer coaches who have taught my children things I never could — both in the mechanics of sport itself, and the intrinsic values learned through being part of a team. These are lessons that will last a lifetime, and hopefully propel my children to become coaches themselves some day. For every organized sport they’ve taken up, they’ve spent their own free time on their skills — in the park, in our yard, together, alone, with friends. My kids move, all the time. In addition to the organized stuff, there’s plenty of time spent doing what Active Kids Canada sees as more important. They walk, bike and skateboard regularly, have newspaper routes, play unorganized sports with friends several times a week, swim at the pool, workout at the gym, have Nerf gun battles and so much more. Do they still spend too much time in front of screens? Sometimes I think so, but they’re usually online price checking their next pair of cleats or ice skates, connecting with teammates, and looking for more things to enroll in. Or, they’re partaking in some well-deserved downtime while icing their muscles. Do we watch too much television? Depends if TSN counts Continued: ACTIVE/ p10

R AESIDE

With the May long weekend behind us, the Upper Fraser Valley has firmly moved into its most dangerous season. Oh, how we long to have a season with no tragic news stories. No crashes, no fires, no deaths, no crying parents and teens filled with regret. However, if history offers any clue to the future, there will likely be ample drunk and stoned drivers, loud and obnoxious partiers, lost and possibly injured hikers, tipped canoes with cold paddlers, and wayward boaters. Not only do these problems overtax the emergency workers and volunteer rescuers who run to help in times of trouble, they put the entire public at risk. Yes, there will be extra police presence, and more road blocks to help deal with the influx of troublemakers, from the purely naive who don’t think anything could happen to them, to those who carelessly put others’ lives at risk. At the outset of every summer season, as sun worshippers and thrill seekers flock to Agassiz and Harrison in search of a little downtime, we hope that calm heads will prevail over those who wish to cause trouble. We hope that visitors and locals alike keep safety a priority, even in times of spontaneity. Because when it comes to summertime safety, the rules were not made to be broken. Drive and operate watercraft sober. Wear a PFD when boating. Stay hydrated. Hike with others, know your travel plans and pack safety gear. Know your limits when swimming, biking and enjoying the outdoors. Using just a bit of caution and care can keep your beautiful summer from becoming a tragic news story. Most of these tragedies are preventable, and all of them start with one person making a decision. This summer, make the right ones ~ Black Press

Tragic reminder of the impact of heat on dogs The terrible tragedy last week of six dogs dying in the back of a dog-walker’s pick-up truck from heatstroke in Langley is a harsh reminder of the special care dogs need as temperatures warm up. The story broke when the dogwalker claimed that six dogs in her care had been stolen. But the sordid truth was that the dogs had been left in the back of her canopy-covered truck in hot weather where they died from heat exhaustion. What exactly happened is still under investigation and charges are pending but the heartbreaking story is the worst of all head’s up scenarios for what not to do as summer approaches. “When the days get warmer we get hundreds of emergency calls to rescue dogs whose lives are endangered because they are left in hot cars by their guardians,”

said Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. “Many well-meaning guardians leave their dogs unattended in parked cars while they run errands. Tragically, this can lead to serious heatstroke and even death for Margaret their pets.” According to EVANS the SPCA, the temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with windows partly open, can rapidly reach a dangerous level that can harm or kill a pet. The air is still with no natural circulation and temperatures can climb to well over 38 degrees Celsius. Dogs have no sweat glands. They cool themselves by panting

and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the hot, still air in the car coupled with the warm upholstery make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Dogs can tolerate high temperatures for only a very short time – usually just 10 minutes - before suffering irreparable brain damage or death. Heatstroke symptoms include exaggerated panting or suddenly stopping panting, rapid or erratic pulse, salivation, anxiety, weakness or muscle tremours, lack of co-ordination, convulsions, vomiting, or collapse. The animal needs to be removed immediately to a cool, shady place, wetted down with cool water, fanned vigorously which will help cool the blood and lower the dog’s core temperature, and offered small amounts of water (drinking too much too

quickly could induce vomiting which will cause dehydration). If water isn’t available, offer the dog some ice cream to lick. Then get the dog to a vet as quickly as possible for further checks. If you see a distressed dog locked in a car in a parking lot, call the police, SPCA, or alert the store manager to get help. Perhaps a PA system broadcasting the problem and the make, model and license plate number of the vehicle in the store can alert the owner they are needed immediately to remove the dog. Authorities will take more extreme measures to quickly remove the dog if the owner can’t be found. I often take my two border collies with me on short errands. I keep their travelling bag in the vehicle all the time which contains their leashes, a large bottle

of water (refreshed frequently), two drinking bowls, poop-scoop bags and a few treats. But if the temperature is going to climb and I’ve got lengthy stops to make, the dogs stay home. At least I know there will be some furiously wagging tails when I get back. “If you’re used to letting your dog accompany you on errands, you might feel guilty leaving him behind on hot summer days,” said Chortyk. “But your dog will be much happier – and safer – at home, with shade and plenty of fresh cool water.” But somewhere in Langley there are six heartbroken families missing their beloved pets. And it must hurt all the more knowing that their deaths were entirely preventable.

Gender legislation ‘nonsense’ The article entitled “Throness ‘respectfully’ agrees to disagree over gender changes” in the April 30th edition of the Chilliwack Progress was food for serious thought. After reading this article I decided to read the actual legislation under discussion and some other background material. This led me to the conclusion that legislation allowing a person to change their gender at the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen is nonsense. For a start the dictionary definition of gender is rather complex relating to language and the designation of words. It certainly

does not suggest that a person’s gender or sex can be changed on a whim. Carried to the ridiculous if a farmer with an unwanted bull could simply apply to the Minister of Health to change it to a milk cow on the payment of the prescribed fee wouldn’t that be nice? The possibilities are endless. Such rubbish! One problem I see with this politically correct legislation is with respect to the designation of a person’s gender on their passport. Our passports ask for a person’s gender as male or female. On the passport it clearly

shows as M or F. In this day of full body scanners at many airports around the world displaying naked images of the person being scanned it may be cause for some discussion. I can only imagine the explanation offered by a person with a passport clearly designated as F when the scan displays a fully equipped M. The explanation could be quite hilarious and costly. This is a piece of legislation we do not need and one where the law of unintended consequences is inevitable.

Trees should be considered a danger I live on Goldspring Place and a couple of days ago I came home to find a large machine, which I believe is the machine that they use to clear property in preparation for development, as well as two flag persons on the culde-sac across the street from my home. My first thought was that they are going to develop the property , so you can imagine my surprise when after clearing an area of approximately 5’ wide by 20-30’ along the edge of the

road, they loaded the huge machine back on the flat deck truck, loaded the 2 flag persons in their vehicle and left. I found this a very interesting scenario in view of the fact that I have spent the last two and a half years trying to get the City to deal with the property immediately adjoining my property. One of my neighbours is a former logger and he says that there are several trees on the property which should be clas-

sified as “danger” trees which are trees that are considered very hazardous that could come down at any time, not to mention that there was a fire on the property a year or so ago which means that it is also a fire hazard. The only satisfaction I have had regarding my concerns about this property was a letter from Mayor Gaetz stating that it was not the City’s problem and my only recourse if there is any injury or damage done as a result of the

neglectful maintenance of this property is to sue. So I am sure you can appreciate how impressed I am with the City’s priorities – God forbid that anybody should be hurt walking along the edge of a property that is full of grass, weeds and blackberry bush branches but if they get hit by a falling tree, so be it - it’s not the City’s problem. It is great to see our tax dollars at work!!!

Surgeries may be delayed but not ‘cut’ tals are responsible for deciding how to manage their individual surgery budgets, and this is done by physicians who prioritize their patient caseloads; ensuring the patients who require immediate or urgent surgery go first. The reality is that this does mean elective, lower priority, less medically needed surgeries may occur over a slightly longer period of time. This is consistent with practice across the province. We understand how frustrating it is for our patients who are waiting for surgery, and we have been working hard with our physician partners to find innovative approaches and solutions to

reduce any wait list times, and improve our efficiency and effectiveness. For example, we have our Soonest Surgery Tool, which allows patients to access information that provides the names of the surgeons most likely able to perform surgery sooner than others. Fraser Health is committed to working with our physicians to further reduce surgery wait times, ensuring patients receive the quality care they need in a timely manner.

Some unfortunate misconceptions have been created about the reduction of surgeries across Fraser Health and I would like to clarify these inaccuracies. (Re: Fraser Health cuts surgeries to make budget). Fraser Health is not cancelling surgeries due to budget. Patients that need surgery are getting their surgery. Fraser Health is working within our budget, as we should be, and acting as responsible stewards of the public funding we receive. Fraser Health is the fastest growing region in the province. Each year, we perform more than 84,000 surgeries. Our hospi-

Who’s in your top 40? As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, the University of the Fraser Valley is seeking nominations for its Top 40 alumni, and organizers want your help. “In this anniversary year we want to shine a bright light on our alumni and raise awareness about the impact that they are having both locally and beyond,” said Nancy Armitage, UFV manager of alumni engagement. “UFV alumni are literally everywhere. They are our teachers, the nurses in our hospitals, our tradespeople, our business owners, our professionals, our farmers, and our social service providers.” The next time you’re getting your car serviced, having your

taxes done, visiting your child’s school for parent-teacher night, visiting your dental assistant, being cared for by a nurse or health care assistant, interacting with a library assistant, enjoying local theatre, or being helped by a police officer, ask the person you are dealing with where they got their postsecondary education. Chances are they will say UFV! Further afield, UFV alumni are teaching all over the world in universities, pursuing advanced degrees in a variety of disciplines, working overseas in community development, and finding success in many areas of Canada. Anyone is eligible to submit an online nomination for UFV’s Top 40 list. To be eligible, the nominee

must have graduated with a master’s degree, bachelor’s degree, diploma, certificate, or citation from UFV, UCFV, or FVC, or completed 30 credits before Jan 1, 2004, or have been granted associate alumni status by the UFV Alumni Association. The nominee must demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following categories: •Community, national, and international contributions • Commitment to others • Acted with selflessness and/or courage • Leadership • Creativity/innovation •Career/professional excellence. To nominate someone for the Top 40 alumni list, please visit: www.ufv.ca/top40alumni

Keeping kids active worth the effort ACTIVE from page 6 as useless programming. I struggle with this myself, but it’s pretty hard to turn off an NHL game when it leads to the boys heading outside, hockey sticks in hands and competition in

their hearts. And yes, I realize we are able to keep the kids busy because we are financially comfortable. Registration fees, team fees, tournament fees, gear, and getting them here and there, it all adds up. But where

there’s a will, there’s a way. We car pool, buy used gear where possible, encourage the boys to buy at least some of their own gear, coshare costs between two households, and make sure to write off registration fees at tax time.

Now, if only driving them around to games, practices, tournaments and sporting goods stores could be made into a physical activity. I’d be looking at an A+, and looking like a marathon runner. - Jessica Peters is the editor of Agassiz Harrison

Lucy Arruda: Making money make sense

Company Sergeant Major Gardner instructs a participant on safely and effectively firing the C9 light machine gun.

‘Soldier for a Day’ Raffles Koh Special to The Progress Members of the Chilliwack business community were recently given a taste of what it would be like to be a “soldier for a day.” The annual event was hosted by the Royal Westminster Regiment, which now calls Chilliwack home. Because the army reserves employs individuals with demanding full-time jobs or are attending post-secondary, the intent of this program was to allow educators and employers of the parttime soldiers to gain an understanding of the technical training and leadership development gained that is incredibly beneficial and relatable to their fulltime careers, regardless of industry. The day included an opportunity for hands-on interaction like firing a belt of live ammunition from the C9A2 Light Machine gun, the handling of automatic rifles, and the traversing of a

80-ft chasm over a canyon with a rope bridge that was expertly set up and operational within an hour. Although the proficiency in these unique fighting and survival skills may not be found in the majority of job descriptions in the Canadian job market, there are some valuable traits that are developed over time while working in these austere situations, such as critical thinking, situation awareness, and effective communication. However, the true value of a military background happens after a brief incubation period as members receive the opportunity to lead and mentor the next generation of soldiers. For example, when Major Chuck Mackinnon, a senior officer in the Regiment spent 10 months deployed in Afghanistan working in an OMLT (Operational Mentorship & Liaison Team) role, he had to consider economic, political, and cultural factors into their tactical decision making pro-

cess when training members of the Afghan National Army to eventually become fully independent. It was only possible when his company, Canada Post, understood the long-term value of this opportunity and made arrangements for him to take the time off. Like knowledge workers, the modern day soldier needs to learn how to adapt to turbulent operating environments that require creativity, interpersonal skills, and a sound understanding of how to personally maximize their value while within the organizational structure in order to survive. The average cost of sponsoring an employee to go on a holistic leadership training course could easily run a tab of thousands for a weekend course. Yet, this viable alternative for personal development outside of the traditional work setting remains misunderstood by most firms.

Lucy Arruda has always pushed herself beyond all limits. This is something that was instilled in her by her mother. “My mom gave me the will to plan and to always push myself to do better. Complacency wasn’t an option. The status quo wasn’t an option. Mom used to always tell me that if I wasn’t doing my best, I wasn’t doing good enough,” she said. Her parents were determined, hard-working Portuguese immigrants who came to Canada from the island of Sao Miguel, an island paradise in the Azorean archipelago that is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Her father landed in Halifax harbour on April 29, 1954 and from there, made his way to Kitimat to work at Alcan. Five years later, he returned to Sao Miguel and after he was married, came back to Canada. This time, the couple settled in Toronto where her father took on a job with Ontario Hydro. Of the five children in the family, Lucy is the youngest. “I came home from the hospital on my brother’s birthday. My brother had wanted a boy but here I was. I always hung out with him and we enjoyed going to Blue Jays games together. I actually became somewhat of a tomboy. I played all kinds of sports but softball was my first love,” she smiled. Although her family had a strong workethic, this drive didn’t preclude the family from enjoying frequent social gatherings. Family time was treasured. In the Arruda Ana household, education was also of paraMACEDO mount importance. “As immigrants, my parents wanted their children to have the best possible education so that we could succeed. Dad wanted to buy a 50 acre ranch but mom refused to move to the country so that we could get our education,” she said. After graduating from St. Joseph’s College, Lucy went on to the University of Toronto where she received a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Unfortunately, her father developed diabetes. “Actually, by the time that he was diagnosed he was already so sick. He really wanted to work but couldn’t do what he was doing before so he went back to work as a custodian. Then there were complications and eventually he had to go on dialysis. Then he had a stroke and eventually, he was taken off of life support. It was so sad. Dad was a wonderful man. He was rather quiet and reflective but so incredibly loving. He was always helping others,” she said proudly. Her father’s death in 1993 caused her to reflect on her own life. “I married quite young and after my dad died I began to realize that I wasn’t happy at all and the year after my father’s passing, I divorced. The company that I was working for at the time was consolidating and this gave me the opportunity to head west,” she said. Lucy had continued to play organized ladies fast pitch and since you could only play at that level in either Vancouver or Chilliwack, Continued: ANA/ p14

work outside of the home again, I went to work for Stan Rogers. Then after four years, I had the opportunity of working for Stream as their site finance manager and I did that for three years. The next three years with Stream I was their regional senior finance manager for the Americas. This meant that I worked with 16 sites in total in Canada, the US, the Caribbean and Latin America.” It was a demanding job and she was constantly on conference calls. “I would start my day at 6:30 in the morning and I’d work until 7:00 in the evening. I began to realize that what I wanted was to get back to working with people again. I had done my CMA (Certified Management Accountant) in Ontario and in 2009 decided

to get into the planning side of things as I was finding accounting just a bit dry,” she smiled. By 2010, she had her CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation and opened up her own practice. She now works under the Investor’s Group umbrella. “I absolutely love what I do,” she admitted. She also believes in giving back to her community, a quality that her parents instilled in her from the time that she was a very young girl. Life is about balance, though, so Lucy always tries to make time for her friends and family and to enjoy one the things that she loves most. “I have always loved the outdoors. I like to hike, kayak and travel. It’s great to explore different places,” she enthused.

You’ll look around and try and figure out where the sound is coming from and why that it isn’t familiar. The low-note grumble and throaty belligerence characterizes the twin pipes that are both aggressive yet sublimely pleasing to the ears. Now imagine amplifying that sound by more than 30. A flock of Carbon Whitetrimmed Diavels set out to congregate in the main plaza of Monte Carlo. That’s where our press briefing would take place. On the way to the gathering point, the adventure took us through a section of the F1 Grand Prix track. Hairpins, winding roads and silky smooth tarmac paved the way for us. King of the open road and a giant among minivans When Honda launched its fourth generation Odyssey in 2011, it described the minivan as ‘the ultimate in family transportation’. Odyssey has become an industry benchmark for minivan interior versatility

features, fuel economy and its agile driving dynamics. While the market for new minivans has been shrinking in recent years, it’s still a sizeable in Canada. A used Odyssey is a sought-after premium product that will

probably cost a little more, but historically it also retains its value exceptionally well. Compared to its predecessor, the 2011 Odyssey offered improved fuel economy due in part to a more aerodynamic shape

that’s wider and includes a lower roofline. Offering seating for up to seven (or eight) occupants, this Odyssey also came with a new “3-mode” second-row seat design and an easier to use fold-away 60/40 split

3rd-row seat. Even its third row seat provides ample head and legroom for adults and a surprisingly high degree of comfort. Its stylish “lightning-bolt” body belt line, that zig-zag just aft of the sliding door, also cleverly

provides third row passengers a larger window. A bigger part of the fuel economy improvement story was the new 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine that came with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). The VCM tech-

nology allows the engine to operate on just three or four of its six cylinders when power requirements are low, such as highway cruising. When linked with a sixspeed automatic transmission in the Touring edition of Odyssey it can achieve bestin-class city/highway fuel economy, rated at 10.9/7.1 L/100km (city/highway). The same engine comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission in all other trim levels of Odyssey, which are LX, EX, EX-RES and EX-L. The Touring edition, which is considered the most luxurious Honda minivan ever, came with a 16.2inch ultra-wide screen rear entertainment system, a cool box for beverages, a multiview rear-view camera with parking aid lines, a Blind Spot information system and auto-leveling HID headlights. Odyssey also comes with an audio-based Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system and a chassis-based Active Control Engine Mount (ACM) system to cancel out noise and vibrations that can occur during the engines cylinder deactivation. Illumination of a green ‘ECO” light on the instrument panel is an indicator, although not necessarily, that Odyssey’s covert cylinder-deactivation is taking place. Other than minor exterior colour changes there were no changes to Odyssey for the 2012 model year. It got a back-up camera as standard equipment for 2013, but was otherwise unchanged. Designed, engineered and made in North America, the fourth-generation Honda Odyssey has a very good reliability record and achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating based on its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash testing results. King of the open road and a giant among minivans, the Honda Odyssey may be the pricy option, but it can also be a good vehicle investment.

The words performance and Volvo rarely appear in the same sentence but the new 2015 V60 Sportswagon R-Design should change the perception that the Swedish manufacturer is only capable of producing reliable and safety conscious products to the exclusion of excitement. This performance oriented T6 AWD version pumps out 325 horsepower, topping the base T6 by 25 horses and a massive 75 more than the four-cylinder and fuel efficient base T5. A week aboard this wagon showed it to be a very sporty machine on the highway and at its utilitarian best in the city. Combine some paddle shift action with the auto transmission in Sport mode and you can push the car from zero to 100 klicks in about six seconds. Taking the V60 at speed around the twisties along the Sea to Sky Highway demonstrated its excellent road holding and handling capabilities, courtesy of corner traction control. Ergonomic seats ensure the driver is also firmly gripped in those corners. Gee, I forgot I was in a Volvo. But before we run away with the idea that Volvo has abandoned what it is best known for; it should be mentioned that there is an option to add the world’s first Cyclist Detection and auto brake technology to the line! – That most certainly makes it a Vancouver car, given that city’s love for

driveway 2014 BMW X5: Changes subtle but significant

The 2014 BMW X5 is instantly recognizable with small changes such as more accent lines.

ally be looked at as a 5-seater, there will be a new, bigger 7 passenger BMW coming in the next year or so. Looks: When you look at this new model, it is instantly recognizable with just small changes such as more accent lines. I had a chance to park it next to the smaller X3 and, other than the front grille and headlights, they share a striking resemblance to each other, this is just a bigger version of that wildly popular SUV. All X5 models come standard with 19-inch wheels but BMW packages their products to be offered with bigger wheels depending on whether they want the sport package or not. Around the back, the same clamshell lift

This all-new BMW X5 is the latest version of the mid-sized luxury SUV that helped the manufacturer expand into markets beyond those where luxury, performance sedans reside. Some younger readers might not remember a time when BMW, and other German makers, never had SUVs. But it wasn’t too long ago that the original X5 came out and transformed the Bavarian automaker into more of a fullline manufacturer. Ever since they started making SUVs, their sales have not retreated. As is stands right now, the X5 combines two classes of SUV, the mid-size 5-seat market and the 7-seat marketplace. Truth be told, this should re-

100km/h in just 6.6 seconds. Not bad for a 6-cylinder. The XDrive 35d turbo diesel should prove to be the most popular. The 3.0L diesel has 413 lb.-ft. or torque and sips fuel. The diesel X5 can make a run to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds but achieves just 8.7L/100km in mixed city and highway driving. All models come with an 8-speed automatic to help get the most out of each litre of fuel. Verdict: All X5 models can be equipped with several different packages like sport packages, luxury packages and more. So starting at $63,000 and up, the base price can be a bit misleading. This is an expensive product but a superbly well designed and engineered one. To be honest, other than the price, there is a lot to like here, this is a great BMW. It is so well put together, it drives superbly and it comes with three equally good engines. If you are in the market for a big luxury SUV, the new X5 does a lot right. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 3.0L turbo 6-cyliner, 6-cylinder turbo diesel and 4.4L turbo V8 Fill-up: 8.7L/6.3L/100km (city/ highway--diesel) Sticker price: $63,000

gate found on the last two versions remains intact. The top flips up and the bottom drops down. It makes it a reach to get inside the cargo area but many owners like this feature for sliding items in and out and being able to sit on the tailgate. Inside: The inside of the X5 is a study in small changes that pay big dividends. The centre screen is huge, the iDrive controller is bigger and navigating around this system is much easier than it has been in past versions. The materials used inside the cabin are first rate. The wide and relatively flat dash makes the cabin feel huge and the big comfortable seats make for an effortless place to spend time. As mentioned, the X5 can be equipped with a third row of seats but they are not that great for space, the GL-Class from Mercedes is a much better option. When equipped with a just 5-seats the cargo space is vast, this is a big rig. Drive: There are three different version of the X5, two that are very popular and the V8 version that is almost overkill. My test unit was the Xdrive 50 and it’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine. This produces a whopping 445hp and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. And this thing flies, it is so fast and stable, it makes this big rig dance in every situation. In addition, there are various driving modes that setup the engine’s response, the steering feel and the suspension stiffness. Even in the most relaxed setting this V8 engine is always up a quick passing manouevre. Yes this is a blast to drive but 445hp is a lot, maybe too much. For gasoline buyers the 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo model is more practical. With 300hp and 300 lb-ft. of torque, the XDrive 35 can make a run to

commanding and bulbous body, matched with a 240 rear tire; a tire that was specifically made in conjunction with Pirelli for the Diavel. Though it might look like a handful, it’s not. And if a “handfulâ€? was measured in weight, you’re only looking at, or handling, 205 kg (452 lbs.) Speaking of hands, its handling is quite superb. Taking on the twisty roads won’t leave you scraping pegs like other cruisers. And with 3 modes (sport, touring and urban) to channel the 162 horsepower (100 hp if you’re in urban mode) from Ducati’s new Testastretta 11° DS engine, it won’t take off on you without your consent. With crowds taking photos of this beautiful beast, and asking to take a photo with it, I couldn’t see any other vehicles generating such fervor. It generates even more zeal when on the open road. But for now, the temporary celebrity status that these bikes bring are a welcome change from the norm. And knowing that an item that costs at least ten times less than the vehicular ornamentation perfectly placed in Monte Carlo the Diavel Carbon White model has an MSRP of $21,995) could be considered cheap thrills, right? I guess it’s all relative. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Progress Eric

Welsh 604.702.5572 • sports@theprogress.com

Community pitches in for Jumpstart Day Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Jody Fostvelt’s voice starts to choke up as she talks about what Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Program has meant to her daughter. “It’s helped her (11 year old Ayla) to feel a part of her community and be able to do what her friends are doing,” the teary-eyed mom says. “It makes her feel like she’s still part of the group.” Jumpstart (jumpstar t.canadiantire.ca/ en/) is a program that helps youths with economic disadvantages access sports that would otherwise be out of reach. A few years ago, Jody thought she’d never have any need for such a program. She had a steady job as a construction project coordinator in Kamloops. She owned a place of her own, with three bedrooms and a nice backyard. But her’s is a cautionary tale about how quickly things can change. When her company restructured, Jody found herself out of work, with the mortgage and other bills piling up. “The day I got laid off is the day I had to put my house on the market,” she says. “When I sold it, the bank took $30,000 and the realtors $15,000 and there was nothing left over. We literally had to start over again with nothing.” Starting over meant putting her stuff into storage and moving in to a friend’s house

in Chilliwack while she tried to find work that wasn’t there. Construction wasn’t booming in Chilliwack, and it took Jody a year to find somewhat steady income. Eventually she switched gears and careers, moving into the care of people with developmental disabilities. A rewarding job, she says, but one with sparse hours and notgreat pay. To supplement her income, she cleans a house for a senior citizen and provides respite care for an autistic boy. But at $21,000 a year, Jody’s hard-pressed to pay the rent, put food on the table and provide Ayla the necessities of life. Pay-to-play activities are a luxury she can’t afford. “It’s heartbreaking telling Ayla that I don’t have the money for things,” Jody says. “We have to make hard decisions, but she understands. There are things that happen at school, and she doesn’t even bring home the forms because she knows I just can’t afford it.” Through Jumpstart, Jody has been able to give Ayla a 12-month leisure centre pass that lets her go to the pool (and sometimes skating) whenever she wants. Last summer, Ayla was able to ziplining in Maple Ridge through a program at the Cheam Leisure Centre. “The leisure centre pass is great because she can go anytime

A youngster helps wash a car at last year’s Jumpstart Day at the Chilliwack Canadian Tire (7560 Vedder Road). Saturday is Jumpstart Day 2014, with tons of things to see and do between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. JENNA HAUCK PROGRESS FILE

she wants and I don’t have to think about it for a whole year,” Jody says. “When her friends call her up, I’m just so thankful to say, ‘go ahead.’ I couldn’t keep paying for it every time she wanted to go, and it’s so great that she’s not missing out.” Jody says a program like this requires some ‘swallowing of pride,’ but she also says no one should be afraid to ask for help.

“Jumpstart is such a huge benefit for the kids and you swallow your pride for them,” she says. “This community is so amazing. I’ve never seen people who are so helpful and ready to give a helping hand. A program like Jumpstart is there for a reason, and all you have to do is ask.” Ever y year, the local Canadian Tire, in partnership with the local chapter of Big

Brothers/Big Sisters, (mentoringworks.ca) hosts Jumpstart Day. T o m o r r o w (Saturday) is the day for this year’s event, with things going on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There’ will be a car wash and barbecue, 4H dogs and the Phantasy Farms train. The Chilliwack Fire Department appears, along with Community Policing and various sports groups.

All proceeds stay in Chilliwack, and last year 350 local kids were able to get involved in sports last year. Since 2005 2,138 children have been helped and $224,900 dollars have been disbursed. Nationally, Jumpstart has helped more than 730,000 kids over the last nine years. Jody and Ayla try to get involved every year as their way of giving back.

“We went last year and it was great fun,” Jody said. “Ayla sees other kids from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and for that day she’s part of a team. I’m excited to see how excited she gets about giving back.” Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Red Ball campaign continues through to the end of may, encouraging customers to donate $2 in exchange for a Red Ball.

University’s McKayla Fricker. Fricker’s time was 2:09.15. Sawatzky’s time was 2:09.25. She qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 2:09.15, recorded at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet. Her time was an NCAA provisional standard, just shy of the automatic mark of 2:09.00 but by far good enough to qualify as Sawatzky enters the championship with the

10th best time in NCAA division II this season. “I feel ready to go and hope to run a fast time at nationals,” Sawatzky said. “My goal is to make the final and leave the race having no regrets. I’m really excited to see what happens.” Sawatzky is a former Sardis secondary school student. Live coverage of the race including video is available through athletics.sfu.ca or in the track and field section of NCAA.com.

Cycling and speed skating changed the lifepath of Clara Hughes, a six-time Olympic medalist and the only athlete ever to win multiple medals at both the summer and winter Olympic games. Now, as she transitions into retirement from competitive sport, Hughes is using her celebrity to shine the light on a topic that has put a dent in her life: mental illness. Hughes, her husband Peter Guzman and friend Ina Teutenberg cycled from Vancouver to Hope on Monday, as part of ‘Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk’ — a 12,000 kilometre, 110-day ride around Canada, to talk about mental health issues and help put an end to the stigma, or shame, that people attach to mental health.

Hughes spoke to over 100 people at Hope secondary school Monday night, then came back to talk to the students Tuesday morning. The ride has 18 support staff and one of them, Derek Forgie, had recently joined the crew to help emcee Hughes’ speaking engagements. Hope was his first event and he warmed up the crowd with a lively repartee on mental health issues. Quoting statistical references, he said, “The people who are struggling with mental health have a harder time dealing with the stigma, than the actual illness itself.” And later: “Here’s the best part, perhaps this is the most promising part of stigma… we made it up! It’s fake! It’s a thing that through miseducation or misunderstanding or ignorance… is just there. “So, if we collectively decide that’s it’s over: guess what, Hope? It’s over! It’s done — and that’s what tonight is all about.” When Hughes arrived on the stage, she exuded an easy confidence — and her trademark smile — as she talked about her life as a troubled teen in Winnipeg. Outpatients are seen at the centre withmonthly group meetings for patients and their friends and families. To contact the centre, call 604-860-7733. Back to the tour: with their gear being carried in support vehicles, the trio was able to maintain a 25 km/h pace on Monday, said Guzman. Tuesday’s Coquihalla stretch on the way to Merritt wouldn’t see the same tempo, surely. “We average 150 kilometres a day, six days a week,” he added. The ride began in Toronto March 14 and concludes in Ottawa on Canada Day. Now that they’ve covered the north country, Guzman hoped the worst weather was behind them. “Surprisingly, it’s been a full-on winter ride until we arrived in Victoria and were wearing T-shirts and shorts,” he said. “The riding part has actually been the easiest,” said Hughes. “It’s the amount of events… 168 events in 67 days so far. July 2 will be a great day of rest.”

Trivia Talk Gutsy Mountie

On May 8, 1877, about a year after Sioux warriors saw to it that General Custer would stand no more, a Canadian Mountie named James Walsh and half a dozen of his men rode into a camp of about 5000 of Sitting Bull’s tribesmen in what is now Saskatchewan. That Sitting Bull could have decorated the prairies with his guts surely must have occurred to Walsh, but he wanted to make sure they respected “the laws of the White Mother [Queen Victoria],” promising fair treatment in return.

With heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of Ralph Marini on May 16, 2014. He will be sadly missed by wife Arlene, sons Marty and Tony, his 6 grandchildren, brother Bruno, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his youngest son Randy and brother Frank. Ralph was born May 1, 1940 and raised in East Vancouver and attended the University of British Columbia. He began his teaching career in the Fraser Canyon where he met his wife Arlene, moved to Port Alberni for two years and then to Chilliwack in 1967 where he taught for 28 years. He was actively involved with the Teacher’s Association and his church. After retiring in 1995, Ralph took up woodworking, gardening, and travelling - he truly enjoyed them all. Viewing will take place on Friday, May 23 from 7pm to 9pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home (45901 Victoria Ave., Chilliwack). Mass will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 10am at St. Mary’s - 8909 Mary Street, Chilliwack. Reception to follow in the hall. Burial at a later date. Jennifer recently moved to Chilliwack with her 10-monthold child. She felt anxious about looking for work after her maternity leave, and finding quality childcare that she could afford. Driving down Vedder Road, she noticed the Chilliwack Community Services sign for the Child Care Resource and Referral Program (CCRR). Jennifer immediately stopped at the office to get more information. Jennifer was impressed. Not only did she get all her questions answered regarding child care in Chilliwack, but she also received a contact list for child care providers in the area. In addition, CCRR staff helped her apply for a child care subsidy, and offered to review her application and fax it free of charge. Jennifer left smiling and feeling confident that she was on her way to securing quality child care upon returning to the workforce. Child Care Resource and Referral is the community’s best source of child care information and resources. To learn more, please call Nicole at 604-847-2237, or just stop in to see us at 7112 Vedder Road. If you are interested in providing child care in your home as a Registered License Not Required child care provider, please contact chwkccrr@comserv.bc.ca for registration information.
