AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After months of unsuccessful negotiations Quesnel teachers will be on the picket line Monday. “The Quesnel School District has been advised by the BCTF, the union representing teachers, that Quesnel teachers will be on strike on Monday, May 26,” School District 28’s release states. All Quesnel schools will be behind picket-lines on this day. Teachers will not be in attendance and no classes will be scheduled. Busses will not run on that day. At the heart of the disagreement, said Quesnel District Teachers’ Association president Lisa Kishkan is class size and composition. “Our primary concern is that government is unwilling to address class size and composition in negotiations,” she said. “We know that our working conditions are their learning conditions. At the end of the day, this is about kids in classrooms.” SD28 said while principals will be in the building, for safety reasons they ask that parents/ guardians make childcare arrangements for Monday. Nazko Elementary and Wells Elementary will also be closed. Last week the B.C. government offered teachers a $1,200 signing bonus and a reduction to the proposed contract from 10 to six years. Chief negotiator for the province’s 60 school districts, Peter Cameron also informed the union that it will begin cutting teachers’ pay by five per cent if teachers continue to refuse to perform some of their duties. BCTF president Jim Iker called the threat to cut wages due to strike action “just so disrespectful” and promised they’d be bringing it to the Labour Relations Board. He reiterated the union’s position that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and special needs support are needed to reach a settlement. SD28 is back to school Tuesday, May 27.

SD28 board announces budget plan QDTA questions classroom cuts

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After the board of education announced their plans for a balanced budget, the Quesnel District Teachers’ Association (QDTA) is questioning cuts to classrooms. “The annual budget bylaw is set at $38,459,925. The board’s budget decisions were based on their guiding principles of budget development and their goals and action plan for 2011-2014,” School District 28’s release states. Student enrolment is projected to decline by 76 school aged FTE (including full-time kindergarten, continuing education and distance learning) and 85 adult FTE for the 2014/2015 school year. The board anticipates declining enrolment and cost pressures will result in a shortfall of $822,000. “Teachers understand with declining enrolment there’s a reduction

in teachers,” QDTA president Lisa Kishkan said. “But their money saving [strategy] is felt directly in our classrooms. SD28 said education partner feedback was gathered through various venues allowing the board to receive input. “Discussions focused on how to deal with the $822,000 shortfall and what the board should focus on over the next three years,” the release states. “Education partners included school based Parent Advisory Council

representatives, the general public, Quesnel District Teachers’ Association, CUPE Local 4990 and the Quesnel Principals and Vice Principals Association. The majority of the feedback received identified a facilities review as a top priority for the next school year.” In order to make up the shortfall, the following changes are planned or have been implemented: 1. Restructure of Helen Dixon Centre (Continuing Education and Retail Program) ($312,618) 2. Reduction in supplies for 76 students ($15,072) 3. Addition of clerical support to assist with ASPEN implementation $27,300 4. Reduction of 4.857 teaching positions ($429,992) 5. Reduction of 1.714 clerical positions ($81,200) 6. Reduction in purchase of carbon credits ($5,000) 7. Increase in management fee for

operating Cottonwood Heritage Site ($17,100) 8. Increase .3 support staff for Learning Services Program $11,388. “There’s no changes to administration staff,” Kishkan said. “All of the cuts are coming from our schools and our classrooms. We made suggestions on where other reductions would be made, but they chose not to.” SD28’s release noted the reductions and made the following comment.: “While it appears that the budget was balanced by reducing salaries and benefits, the board earlier this year was able to provide a well-deserved wage increase to CUPE Local 4990 by cutting supplies categories and the Narcosli School closure savings. These cuts cost the board an additional $276,000.”

A Life Insurance Primer

Life insurance is a basic ingredient of successful financial and estate planning. When you die, insurance can provide financial security for your family. But with so many types of policies available, how do you choose? The first thing you should know is that life insurance is divided into two broad categories: term insurance and permanent insurance. Both pay beneficiaries a tax-free death benefit if you die while the policy is in force. Term life insurance provides coverage for specified periods, while permanent life insurance provides coverage that can last a lifetime. Here's a look at how these policies can be used, and some of the variations in each group.

North Cariboo Arena Replacement Frequently Asked Questions More “Frequently Asked Questions” about the proposed North Cariboo Arena Replacement project will be available online next week at cariboord.bc.ca and quesnel.ca. What is the proposed North Cariboo Arena Replacement Project? The overall vision was the first step in the North Cariboo Arena Replacement Project and proposed the following: A 1,600 seat (approximately 62,000 square foot) arena with a regulation size ice surface and dry floor support space for arena programs and events; Located adjacent to the existing Twin Arenas complex; Constructed of engineered steel with wood architectural elements.

What is the cost of the proposed facility? Consistent with this project vision, the loan authorization bylaw is prepared for the borrowing of up to $7.5 M to allow for an estimated $17 M arena replacement. What will the referendum question be? A referendum will be held on June 14, 2014 to seek voter assent for the Arena Replacement Project for the North Cariboo. Eligible voters who reside within the North Cariboo Recreation and Parks service area will be asked to vote on the bylaw authorizing the borrowing required to proceed with the project.

Public consultation through CEI Architecture is currently The referendum question will be: in process and accordingly, the overall vision may slightly “Are you in favour of the Cariboo Regional District change. Term life insurance is often used to cover temporary insurance needs over a specified period. Examples include mortgage and debt elimination, and education funding for children. Most income replacement needs can also be met with term life insurance. Term life insurance is typically available for terms of one to twenty five years. It may also be available until a certain age, often 80 or 85. The death benefit is paid only if you die during the term. Premiums are usually constant during the term, but increase if you renew. There is usually no cash value.

Permanent Life insurance Permanent life insurance is typically used to cover insurance needs that will exist throughout a lifetime. Examples include final expenses upon death, emergency funding and funds to offset potential tax liabilities on registered assets and capital gains. There are three main types of permanent life insurance: Whole life: With this "traditional" life insurance you pay a fixed regular premium for a specified death benefit. Coverage never expires. A whole life policy has a cash value, which is returned if the policy is canceled. While the policy is in force the cash value is used to fund the policy, and policyholders have no control over how it is invested. Some whole life policies pay dividends, enabling policyholders to benefit from the performance of its participating fund. Universal life: This type of policy has insurance and investment components. Premiums are partly used to provide life insurance coverage, with the remainder going to the investment component. Returns generated by the tax-exempt investment portion grow sheltered from income tax. Universal life policies offer a number of fixed and variable investment options, and you can top up the investment component with additional payments. You may also be able to direct more toward the life insurance component, to increase the death benefit. You can withdraw money from the investment portion, borrow against it, or use it to pay premiums. When you die, your heirs receive the face value of the policy's insurance and in some cases the investment portion as well. Term-to-100: This provides lifetime protection, usually at a lower cost than other types of permanent insurance. Premiums are generally paid until age 100, but policies typically have no cash value and pay no dividends. Within each category of insurance you'll find many variations. Speak to a financial advisor or insurance representative about what policy-or combination of policies-suits your needs. Insurance and annuities are offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (except in Québec). In Québec, insurance and annuities are offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (Québec) Inc.

ow, some people just cannot grasp the concept of “leading by example.” A woman allegedly attacked a baby, a two-year-old and a four-year old after their mom asked her to stop swearing on a bus in Vancouver. Disgusting, right? But what’s also troubling is the fact the mother who took offence (and rightly so) to the profanity, “pummels” the woman after she allegedly threw a drink in her baby son’s face. Now, the concept of mama-bear is not wasted on any of us at the Observer, but if someone were to throw a beverage in my prince’s face, I sincerely hope my mothering instinct would not include kicking the crap out of the perpetrator. One could conclude it may just escalate the situation. How many times have we tried to instil “use your words” in our children? Or, my mother’s favourite: “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” Here’s how it allegedly went down. Tuesday morning the woman boards the bus. She then begins arguing with the driver after she failed to pay (insert sigh). Her incessant swearing caused Rocky, aka, mom, to watch her language. Crazy-potty-mouth-lady threatens I-use-my-fists-not-my-words-woman and the gloves were off. Both are kicked off and (here’s where violence beets violence comes to mind) the potty-mouth pulls a knife on the mother and chases her down, kicking over her four-year-old and kicking her two-year-old. Thankfully the knife-wielding psychopath was arrested and is now up on several serious charges. There are no excuses for her horrid behaviour. But it also bears note that the mother should have taken her babies out of the situation and not contributed to the escalation. Her screams of “don’t f***ing touch my kids you f***ing bitch” as she repeatedly punches the other woman in the face surely had an emotional impact on her children as well. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

Starting with a walk in the park I

started out this year extremely depressed, low on energy and reluctant to get out of bed. Like an alcoholic falling off the wagon, I had once again succumbed to my junk food addiction, knowing full well I was making my situation far worse. I’d gained weight and felt sick, both physically as well as mentally. I was also avoiding people because I didn’t think I had much to offer in my darker state. When I finally agreed to meet up with one of my best friends for coffee, she confessed to me that she was feeling some of the same things that I was. Like me, her stress and anxiety were taking a toll and she was also selfsabotaging with junk food and not taking good care of herself We decided to help each other, but we weren’t sure how to go about doing that. At first, we’d just talk about our troubles and support each other’s efforts

On A Brighter Note to eat clean, get more active and do things that would improve our well being. But despite our mutual desire to shape up, nothing much was happening for either one of us. After several weeks of healthy eating and exercising separately, we saw little to no change and decided to try walking together to see if that would help. It did. My first stroll with Kim was by the lake in Peachland and she walked so fast I had a flashback to being a little kid trying to keep up with my dad. I couldn’t believe someone the same height as me was able to make strides as though their legs were twice

what the weather might be like. I’m not lying in bed reluctant to get out of it anymore. I’m now enthusiastic about moving my legs and breathing in the fresh outdoor air, just as much as the dogs are. Many of my friends that I’d typically sit and have coffee with have become my walking-talking partners as well. Even my husband and kids are joining me and the pups. I feel ready to intensify my exercise routine, and I have plans to do that, but I don’t imagine I’ll ever stop going on my wonderful non-workout feeling walks. Besides helping me slim down, they’ve been inexpensive and effective therapy sessions for my depression and anxiety. They’ve also been so enjoyable that this whole experience has felt easy. Turns out I like easy. It seems to like me too. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com

as long, but she walked that way the next time we met as well. I hadn’t thought of this simple form of exercise as being much of a workout, but with Kim it definitely was. It wasn’t too strenuous though. I used to work really hard running and lifting weights, and I never considered walking – even speed walking – enough of an aerobic challenge to make any significant changes to my body. Yet it is all I’ve been doing for exercise the last few months, and I’ve lost 35 pounds as a result. I can thank Kim for getting me started on all this, but she’s no longer my only fitness friend. From the moment I get up, my ridiculously excitable dogs start following me around the house visibly eager to go for their morning hike. Witnessing their unmistakable glee as they frolic in the woods has been an amazing and healing way to start the day, no matter

Focus on the issues

Editor: I read Ron Paull’s thoughtful letter concerning the new arena and agree with most of his comments. A properly thought out recreation plan has been needed for many years. Improvements will be required for the pool soon and are likely to cost at least $2 million. No one As a resident of is talking tax the recreation about increases area, I feel I have for this yet but they are paid my fair going to be share towards a necessary and with building that I an aging will likely never population on a fixed use. income, not easily affordable. Before the referendum, we should be addressing a key issue for our community. As you know, this community consists of those who reside within the recreation area and those who do not. Those of us who do, have already been pre-taxed at a significant level for the Multi-Centre and this money is now to be put towards the new arena, whether we support that or not. As a resident of the recreation area, I feel I have paid my fair share towards a building that I will likely never use. We are the only people who will have a vote in this referendum. Wouldn’t it be better for everyone to have a vote and for everyone to pay towards the facility? How about I opt for paying more should I choose to use it, and quit being taxed? Those people who reside outside of the area and who want to opt in could do so and be taxed instead. There are bigger issues here that need to be resolved before we go and waste more money on another referendum. Why can’t we focus on these issues first, get a proper plan and then everyone can share in the decision. Meriel Wild Quesnel

LTE product is an industry standard and is used by carriers worldwide.

“Over the past year, telecom operators have embraced this innovative technology to deliver wireless telecommunications equal or better than traditional wire line services,” Sean Yang, president of Huawei Canada said. The new LTE network, built on ABC’s licensed 3.5 GHz spectrum holding, will provide service to customers living within 20 km of an ABC site, and will scale to speeds of up to 50 Mbps. ABC will begin rolling out 10 Mbps packages as the LTE network is constructed. The availability of broadband Internet in B.C.’s rural areas is an important part of bridging the digital divide in Canada. High-speed connectivity is a key economic driver in rural communities,

t’s not laps in a pool, it’s not a leisure swim in 10 Mile Lake. Four hardy women plan to swim 1,400 km over 34 days – the full length of the Fraser River. Quesnel’s Amy Law, Jacquie Lanthier of the Lower Mainland plus Sheena Miller and Ali Howard of Smithers are in full training for the September 2015 relay swim. “The primary purpose of this swim is to celebrate the mighty Fraser River and to raise awareness of rivershed health and ecology,” Jacquie said. “This one river is so vital to every aspect of not only this province but the whole planet.” For Jacquie, she has been surfing all winter, climatizing to the frigid water along with indoor pool training. “Plus I cross train with mountain biking, ski touring and running, a complete program.” Amy, who is currently living in Whitehorse, swims three or four times a week in an indoor pool and has taken lessons to improve the efficiency of her stroke. “I’m not a terribly great swimmer, but I’m hoping to improve,” she said. “I also plan to train in cold water this summer, which will be easy to achieve as most lakes are still frozen here at the moment.” Amy went on to say she believes in maintaining an overall healthy and active lifestyle, so hiking, biking, jogging

and yoga are all a part of her routine. She also has a couple of summer goals to keep her on track, including doing a triathlon for the first time in August. As to her motivation, Amy said the more time we spend in nature, the more we become interested in what’s going on. In 2011, Amy was an eager participant in the Sustainable Living Leadership Program which brought students and facilitators down the Fraser River in voyageur canoe, walking the riverbank and rafting the canyon arriving in the Fraser River delta changed people. The following year she made the journey again as a co-facilitator and in 2013, again as a facilitator, Amy joined the expedition in Quesnel. “I’m also on the programs committee of the Rivershed Society,” she proudly admitted. It was on the 2012 trip where she met Jacquie, a participant and together they were inspired by Fin Donnelly, who spoke to the participants of his swim down the Fraser River in 1995 then again in 2000, to consider a river swim of their own. Ali swam the Skeena River in 2009 to raise awareness about threats to Northern B.C. watersheds as well as protesting Shell Oil’s proposed coal bed methane developments in the Sacred Headwaters. During the course of preparing for this epic swim, she consulted with Fin Donnelly, and has been guiding the four women in their preparations. Sheena, who is currently rowing up the coast of B.C. on a 100-day journey to

Alaska where they are documenting their findings regarding current conditions of B.C.’s coastline, was an acquaintance of Ali and jumped onboard the Fraser River project immediately. Although each woman is following a different day-to-day path, they are looking forward to unifying on their quest to swim the Fraser River. As the time approaches they plan to get together often to work out the planning logistics.

With the relay model, each swimmer will take a shift in the water, although there will be no night swimming. The entire team will camp riverside each night. Fraser River Raft Expeditions is providing raft support to carry gear, support staff, emergency response equipment and those swimmers not in the water. Amy summed up the learning which began with her trek down the Fraser. “The Fraser River is one of the most important water systems for socket salmon, but the salmon are in systemic decline,” she said. “I think we have all of the expertise and tools to holistically manage this water system, but there needs to be more support to really take care of our watersheds.” She added she’s proud of Quesnel’s record with its beautiful river walk trail and the Blackwater Paddlers who promote river health. She also recounts releasing salmon into the Dragon Creek tributary with schoolchildren when she worked with Baker Creek Enhancement Society. “My sincere hope is that more and more people in the whole river shed appreciate the Fraser in these meaningful ways,” she said. The group are looking for financial support in order to make this journey as far-reaching as possible. All donations can be made at rivershed.com. Pumpkin time

The family of

Market vendors offer pumpkin plants for future giants It may seem like a long time until Thanksgiving, but if you were a little tiny pumpkin plant aspiring to be the biggest and best pumpkin in the Cariboo, you’d want to be firmly rooted in the ground before the end of May. So, this next weekend, vendors at the Quesnel Farmers’ Market will be offering for sale many of these little pumpkin plants with big aspirations. Giant pumpkins are specially bred to absorb nutrients and moisture, and consequently weight, faster than their squash cousins. World records for these giants are close to 650 kgs or 1,500 pounds; here in the north, the biggest have been around 80 kgs or 175 pounds. With a good growing season and good care, a 200 pound pumpkin is attainable. Not only will you find starter pumpkin plants at the Market, but lots of tomatoes, hanging baskets,

other vegetable and flower nursery stock will be available. And, of course, the freshest of early spring greens like spinach, radishes, green onions, lettuce, asparagus, and much more are to be had. There are also vendors selling bread, pies, cookies and other baked items and some of the best readyto-eat delectables, including tacos, deli sandwiches and dim sum. New this year is hot food from Spicy Greens restaurant. The Market is a great place to find one-of-a-kind crafts, from sewing, soaps, to wood products. With freshly brewed coffee and live music, it is a truly fun way to spend Saturday mornings. This week’s musical guest is Quesnel’s very own Doug Koyama. So, come for the freshness and stay for the fun. The Market is open from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturdays, at the Helen Dixon School Site. – submitted by Rob Borsato

Lynda Atkinson, a member of the B.C. Agricultural Council, shared the views of the BCAC with everyone. At the end of the

session, attendees were surveyed as a means to assess their opinion about protecting farmland in British Columbia. An overwhelming majority of the attendees (78 per cent or 21 of 27 responses) indicated that they wanted the existing legislation to be strengthened. Public forum on ALR held in Kersley A public forum on protecting farmland was held at the Kersley Community Hall May 14. The aim of the forum was to provide an open space for members of the public, especially farmers, to share their views on protecting farmland. The event was organized by the District H Farmers’ Institute, with help from FARMED, in light of proposed changes (Bill 24) to the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and the Commission that manages it. People were encouraged to share their views about the proposed changes and about general farmland protection. Thirty-five people attended the event; most were farmers. They were given a bit of background by Dr. David Connell about the 40-plus years of farmland protection in B.C. Dr. Connell is an associate professor in the School of Environmental Planning, at the University of Northern B.C. He then provided an overview of Bill 24. After that, everyone was invited to ask questions to help clarity aspects of the current legislation

Museum Annual Book Sale a success

T

hrough rain, sleet or snow, the Museum Book sale will always

go! In spite of the inclement weather, the Friends of the Museum Annual Book sale was a successful event. Raising money for exhibits and events at the Museum is just one of the mandates of the Friends of the Museum. This event and the Antiques and Uniques Sale provides money needed for special exhibits and acquisitions to add to the collections. When the books start ‘pouring’ in, it is amazing to see just what people in this community do read, which authors are popular, which ones have a following and which ones are favourites. With the onslaught of e-books, it will be interesting to see how long before book sales are a thing of the past. I think we have a few good years left before that happens.

PAST TIME Fortunately for the Museum, people also donate ‘old’ books, books with local history, local authors and Cariboo themes are sold separately from the big book sale. They are available in the Museum Gift Shop. There are inveterate readers with a taste for all things Cariboo who haunt our shop on a regular basis to see if they can pick up that missing tome. This year’s Antiques and Uniques Sale focused on the camera section of the Museum. And we sold out. With an assortment of old Brownies, Polaroids, Bell

and Howell projectors and odds and sods of everything photographic, there were a lot of people who left the Museum with a smile on their face. Gordy Perry, where were you? It was reassuring to have young people come in and actually purchase a piece of history, even if it was just to see if they could take it apart and put it back together! We do hope you will read those books and be back for more next year. And if you finish all those before fall, don’t forget the Friends of the Library have their big book sale then. Hope to see you as you ‘pass time’ at the Museum. Lord, when we are wrong, make us willing to change. And when we are right, make us easy to live with. Amen Peter Marshall Honey Affleck is chair of the Museum Commission and regular Observer contributor.

W

hat exactly do they do at the Crooked Leg Ranch? Well, the ranch has one kennel from when they used to raise shepherds and it has a few corrals for their horses but other than that, it is open land. As they began to absorb some of the rescues a few more areas were fenced off. Now the llamas have their space under the trees, the horses are in the meadow and Richard and Humphrey have their area and a small shelter. That is it! They don’t have buildings for small animal shelters. They don’t have an isolation area for sick and injured rescues. They have essentially used the house as a pet hospital for rehabilitaCrooked Leg Tails tion and boarding. Since Crooked Leg Ranch cannot adequately handle all of the small animals that come their way, a network has been created and is ever growing. Since January 2014, nearly 70 cats have come into care. All of these cats are assessed, given shots, dewormed, spayed or neutered and then put up for adoption or rehoming. There are 10 dedicated families who open their hearts to these cats. One volunteer, Ashley Roberts Schmidt, recently took in Crystal, a very pregnant mama. Early April, seven kittens emerged. With this batch, Ashley has now had more than 50 fosters since she started helping the ranch. “I never say no if they ask me to care for a litter of kittens. I love having them,” she says. When at an adoptable age, the kittens will be displayed at Bosley’s or Total Pet for local adoption. Any cats that are deemed transferrable are driven or flown to the Action for Animals in Distress Society in Burnaby where there is a much better chance for adoption. For dogs, the kennel is fine for puppies and Karla has just reared the second batch this winter. Most of the dogs are transferred to the Victoria Humane Society because this group has a large following and are able to find homes relatively quickly. The newest puppies, Pandora’s litter, were flown to Victoria on April 8 by Pacific Coastal Air, out of William’s Lake. This company and Central Mountain Air will fly rescue animals, free of charge, when there is room. Another partner is Spirit’s Mission. This is a Gabriola based charity that promotes health and wellness for companion animals within B.C.’s First Nations and surrounding communities. The local chapter of Pet Safe Coalition of Canada works closely with Crooked Leg Ranch. It is run by Debbie Knabke as a nonprofit organization that helps all animals during disasters. They will shelter and reunify a pet and its owner. A key part of their work is education to help pet owners prepare for worst case situations. And there are more! This network includes the many dedicated volunteers like Christy Wheeler who is the foster home coordinator, A small but loyal group regularly sorts bottles and overseen by a transfer coordinator there are drivers who take animals to a flight or around the province to shift animals to new homes. A huge thank you goes to Chrysler for the loan of the Community Care-A-Van for some of these moves. Now you can see why there are few adoptable animals kept at the ranch but there is hope for the ability to do more. The organization seeks to achieve charity status to be able to give tax receipts for donations and there is the dream to build a barn that will allow shelter and isolation as needed. Wouldn’t it be great if Pioneer Log Homes brought their show to Quesnel and built a barn for Crooked Leg Ranch? You never know. God does not change. He is always the same. Even when our prayers seem to go unanswered or we stumble from one disaster to the next – He is the same. Even when we feel as though we are floating on clouds and it’s spring every day – He is the same. He is still our loving, gracious, wonderful Father. James

tells us about the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Secondly, local church is God’s idea. Birthed in the Holy Spirit, grown in adversity and established on the Word, the local church remains His vehicle to reach a dying world. Christianity is not a solo exercise and He puts

us in the community to walk with others into our inheritance. And when the road becomes a little steep and bumpy, we help each other along, shoulder to shoulder. We read in 1Corinthians 12 that God has put the body together ... there should be no division in the body ... its parts should have equal concern for each other.

To build this Church, God takes ordinary people like you and me, with different gifts, making their vital contributions, uniting them with a common vision and values to not only bring fullness of life to each, but the gift of Life to the lost. Brian Dean is pastor with the Lakeview Church in Quesnel.

The Cariboo youth soccer league kicks off WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter It was a busy month for memebers of the Quesnel Youth Soccer Association (QYSA) as the snow melted away and the fields dried up, athletes took to the fields.

Prospect Camp Several members of the QYSA participated in the UNBC Timberwolves Women’s Soccer Prospect Camp May 3 – 4 at the Northern Sports Centre at UNBC. Three players from the QYSA were luck enough to attend the camp; Mackenzie Samiet Grade 12, Kyra Teetzen Grade 10 and Haley Schotel Grade 10, took the opportunity to learn what is expected of the Canadian Interuniversity sport (CIS) level athletes.

These young Quesnel soccer players joined 25 other female athletes from Northern B.C., participating in field sessions and train sessions. The camp ended with competitive games on Sunday afternoon. “Quesnel Soccer is a significant contributor to the UNBC Women’s Soccer Program and the recently held Prospect Camp shows that there is the potential to have this trend continue,” UNBC head coach Andy Cameron said. “Strong performances from Kyrs Teetzen, MacKenzie Samiet and Haley Schotel indicates that there is some good development work being done in Quesnel. “I am hoping to create a viable pathway for these and other future players to achieve the

CIS standard through the UNBC Timberwolves Program.” Goalkeeper Haley Schotel was pleased with the positive feedback she received from the coaches as well as learning which aspects of her game she needs to improve. There is high hopes for the young athletes of Quesnel, with several several former members of the QYSA, Tanya Grob and Brianna Kozak, now playing for the UNBC Timberwolves.

Season kick-off The Cariboo Youth Soccer League kicked off the season in Quesnel Sunday, May 11. A total of 17 youth teams coming from Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Prince George took part in the Sunday

matches, with the games separated into six divisions. In the U16 boys division, Williams Lake was the big winner taking home two victories. Going head to head against the Prince George athletes Williams Lake dominated, winning with a final score of 5-0. Going up against Quesnel the Williams Lake team was met with more of a challenge, winning by only 1 point with a final score of 2-1. It was a rough day for Prince George, suffering another loss with a final score of 4-2 in favour of Quesnel. In the morning Quesnel boys U14 division rushed in to take the lead, winning with a final score o 4-3 against Prince George. However, the players lost stamina in the

afternoon and dropped their second game against Williams Lake. It was a tough loss for the U12 boys division, with the Quesnel team playing and lossing two games against Prince George. Still the players has pressed hard for the first games of the season and coach Eric Wickham was pleased with the boys efforts. Quesnel's U16 girls took control of the field in their games against 100 Mile House, winning by a landslide with a final score of 4-1. Later claiming another victory of 3-2 to edge out 100 Mile House. Claiming another victory for Quesnel were the players of the U12 girls division, playing and winning games against 100 Mile House and Prince George.

In the morning Quesnel faced off against 100 Mile House in the U14 girls division, dominating the field with a final score of 3-0 in favour of Quesnel. In the second match against the 100 Mile House players return with vigour, even leading at times during the match against Quesnel. Midfielder Samantha Samiet scored a late goal for Quesnel off a corner kick, rocketing Quesnel into the lead with a score of 3-2. A big save on a penalty kick by goalkeeper Rachel Schotel helped to keep Quesnel ahead to claim another victory for the Quesnel Youth Soccer Association. With the season just beginning, soccer fans can likley expect more victories from the talented young athletes.

Look for one specimen plant that makes a statement

O

ne of the most valuable lessons of landscape design is not to plant too many specimens. By a specimen I mean a plant with a unique shape or form. One of the strongest forms in the landscape is the weeping form. This is such a graceful shape but overuse will result in a chaotic looking garden. Smaller weeping trees are ideally placed around a pond or in a garden bed. They look out of place if planted all by themselves on the lawn like a shade tree. If you are looking for an accent tree for a small space, I would recommend either the Caragana arborescens ‘Pendula’ or Walker’. Both of these prairie hardy weeping caraganas are a beautiful accent for a small space. Generally, they are about 1.75m (6ft.) tall and 1.25m (4ft.) wide. They both have yellow pea-shaped flowers in summer followed by yellow fall colour. The Walker Weeping Caragana has finer feathery foliage than the Weeping Caragana. Both are very drought tolerant and hardy to zone 3. The long weeping branches can use an occasional haircut to keep them off the ground. I prefer to see them trimmed unevenly rather than straight across like bangs. These small trees look attractive under planted with a low ground cover e.g. Wiltoni Juniper, dwarf daylilies, creeping thyme come to mind. If you have a bit more room, consider planting a weeping flowering crabapple. The weeping branches of Rosy Glo flowering crabapple are a standout in the landscape even when not blooming. The foliage is bronze/green and the flowers are bright pink in spring. This small accent tree can obtain a spread of 3m (10ft.) so give it some room to grow. The height is dependent on the height of the graft, usually around 1.25m (4ft.). This variety is hardy to zone 3. My favourite weeping tree is a top-worked Young’s weeping birch. Top worked is a technique used in the nursery to prune out the central leader. Sometimes one of the lateral renegade branches will start to reach upwards to become a dominant leader again, but these can be easily pruned out. These look beautiful with night lighting. If you have lots of space and lots of moisture a weeping willow will be happy to grow there. The fast growing golden weeping willow (zone 4) has long golden drooping branches with long bright green leaves that turn yellow fall. This is a definitely a graceful specimen but do not plant near any underground septic or water lines. There are also evergreens that have weeping forms. A very funky one is the weeping Norway spruce. It has very long pendulous branches and forms a very narrow conical shape when staked but looks totally different when allowed to grow along the ground. My father-in-law, Peter, lets his wander throughout his shrub border, cascading over rocks and the result is very unique. If you are interested in learning more about using form in the landscape, plan on attending our free seminar this Saturday, May 24 @ 10:30am. on First Impressions. Thank you to the following poets who submitted their poems. Poet’s Corner will run the last Friday of each month (providing we get submissions). Drop off your poems at the Cariboo Observer - Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or email to publisher@quesnelobserver.com. Fax 250-992-5229 Oh Those Golden Years They tell us when we’re younger, getting old is all the rage, So I can hardly wait, to be that ripe old golden age. We work so hard in early life, to make ends meet ahead, To find we’ve worked for nothing, and we’re all behind instead. For every dollar you have saved, cost of living’s gone up two’ You wonder when you reach that age, what are you going to do? I now have reached that ripe old age, and now I wonder why, We hadn’t done those famous things, when we were young and spry. For now you have these aches and pains, that hurt with every move, Your arms are sore, your legs they hurt, you hope it will improve. But standing up and sitting down, becomes a daily chore, You wonder what you did in life, that made you weak and sore. Then one day when you wake up, you’re really on a roll, You’re ready now to take that trip, that long and wanted goal. Your car is old and out of date, it will not make the trip, But that’s okay, you’ll take a plane, hurry pack your grip. You’re at the airport, checking in, it appears there is a strike, In other words there is no chance to take the trip you like. You wait around and wait around, all things are at a halt, This plane won’t go, this trip is off, and now it’s not your fault. So home you go, you’ll try again, it’s just another day, By the time you’re ready, you’re aching all the way. The time has really lapsed now, your bones are stiff and sore, You’ll have to stay at home now, to travel is a chore. Your hips are sore, knees they ache, your back hurts when you walk, This means you cannot get around, or even stop to talk. With all these problems, bis and small, it’s very plain to see, That daily life is really rough, and travelling’s not for me. So now we live with hopes and joys, these aches will go away, But it’s a life we’ll have to face, for they are here to stay. These golden years, as you can see, are really not a pleasure, For now you know, from all of this, that home’s the place to treasure.

Restoring a rare Mustang to magnificence Everybody remembers their first car but very few people hold onto that set of wheels long into adult life. Tsawwassen resident Laura Ballance still has her 1967 Ford Mustang T5 but it has not turned a tire in years and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Safety Tip: As high school seniors prepare for graduation, it’s important that parents make sure their teens are also planning for a side ride home after all of their festivities. Drives-U-Crazy Highway merging When drivers do not increase their speed enough when merging onto the highway. It makes it dangerous when they’re going 40 – 60 – 80 and stay at 80 even when they have entered the highway. Its 100 km/h people, come on! The traffic on the highway is going 100 or more . . . ughhh! What drives-u-crazy? kmorgan@blackpress.ca

Dealers are more open to this, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical Inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend an extra $100-$200 to get a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting into. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

You’ve got your license, you’ve got your proper gear, now all you need is your motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Budget Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing to outline when it comes to Establishing a your new ride. If you’re buying used, this is budget is probably particularly important. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the most important thing to outline when the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike just happens to be a nightmare and it comes to your new costs you an unanticipated fortune on reride. pairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. Alexandra Straub New or Used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warranties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget. Private Sale or from a Dealership? Speaking from experience, buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike on Craigslist. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VIN through ICBC or a Trusted Database It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail the damage. It’ll also show if there is money owing on the bike or if it was reported stolen. Keep in mind, if the bike is from out of the country, the record likely won’t show. When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in any accidents and had all original parts. I left thinking that the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. However, I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage costs of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might even have the bike’s history on hand for you. It never hurts to double check. The Myth of Displacements Many new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader write me asking what he should get. He’s 6’2”, 220 pounds and had long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. I asked him why. He said he wanted something manageable for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t going to fit him! Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Davidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Suzuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher displacement but they’re going to be easy to manage and work much better with his body. What did he buy? A used 2006 Honda Shadow 750cc. And he loves it. I recommend buying a bike that you are comfortable on, both physically and mentally. Test Rides Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask.

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model was first conceived in 2008 but still looks very futuristic. It is one of 17 concept cars from across Europe and the US to be displayed at “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The GINA Light Visionary Model features a virtually seamless outer skin, consisting of a flexible fabric material stretched over a movable substructure. Furthermore, functions are only enabled when they are actually needed. The most striking example of this is the headlight design. In normal position, when the headlights are not active, they are hidden under the special fabric cover. As soon as the driver turns on the lights, the contour of the front end changes.
