Blaze razes restaurant early Monday BY CHRIS BUSH

I

THE NEWS BULLETIN

A restaurant popular with Nanaimo and Ladysmith residents was ravaged by fire early Monday morning. Country Kitchen, located south of Nanaimo in Cassidy at Island Highway and Beck Road, burned to the ground. Firefighters, who were still at the scene at 8 a.m. knocking down hot spots in the smouldering remains of the structure, said the alarm was called in at 2 a.m. No one was known to be in the building at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The cause of the blaze is being investigated, but has not been determined. The building, which has long been operated as a roadside restaurant – formerly known as the Frog and Puddle and prior to that as the Juniper Cafe – recently underwent extensive re n o v a t i o n s b e f o re reopening in late April as the Country Kitchen. If anyone has information on this incident, please contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Ready to ride

The office will seem like a bit farther than a hop, skip and a jump away for Inuktun Service’s Steve Pilcher, left, who plans to ride his unicycle to work and Craig Senych, who has committed one morning of Bike to Work Week to ride 70 kilometres on his Trek touring bike from his home in Maple Bay. For a story on their plans for Bike to Work Week, please see page 28.

A letter went home with students yesterday to provide parents with details of what to expect during the lockout and rotating strikes by teachers in Nanaimo school district. Spokeswoman Donna Reimer said the list of questions and answers was provided by the province, which imposed a lockout on teachers this week, barring work 45 minutes prior to and after scheduled classes, as well as during lunch and recess. “It probably has the most complete info in regards to the lockout,” Reimer said. Nanaimo teachers are on strike today (May 27) as part of rotating strikes throughout the province this week. Classes will be in session tomorrow. The lockout is an attempt to bolster the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association’s case for cutting

salaries by 10 per cent in response to the strike action. BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron said the lockout terms match existing union work hour restrictions and do not interfere with voluntary activity. Teachers can choose not to contact parents or take part in graduation, but the lockout doesn’t prevent that and there is no pay to cut for such volunteer activities, Cameron said. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker said Thursday the stop-work order will disrupt after-hours activities, including graduation ceremonies and may disrupt report cards and marking of provincial exams for graduating students. “No more calls to parents, no more e-mails home, it all comes to an end because of the lockout,” Iker said. Reimer said Nanaimo school district will plan day by day as the situation unfolds. For more information, please visit www.sd68.bc.ca.

Workshop an opportunity for healing By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

A reconciliation workshop hosted by Nanaimo’s Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre this week will allow another opportunity for healing, according to co-facilitator Tony Elliott. Aboriginal children were subject to mental, physical and sexual abuse at residential schools and two survivors will be making presentations at the workshop Friday (May 30). “I guess what it’s come down to is we want to look at not just the pain of residential school but some of the solutions,” said Elliott. “So looking at solutions as a community of aboriginal and non-aboriginal on the intergenerational impacts that are still being passed down.”

He said the aim is to move away from the “us and them” mentality and help to change both sides. “A lot of people haven’t had the opportunity to heal it and we’re going to look at more of sort of what’s happened, but move into solution and then some healing practices,” Elliott said. There is also a therapeutic nature to the workshops. “Most [workshops] I’ve gone to never talk about the healing and they never talk about the work that is already being done and about what needs to happen more and how we can work more as a community, not just for First Nations but for all people who have trauma and who have healing that needs to be done,” he said. The event takes place at 421 Franklyn St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

NDP says veterans lack resources

OPPOSiTiON lEaDEr hosts discussion in Nanaimo. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Veterans affairs were at the forefront of a town hall with Canada’s official Opposition leader at the Coast Bastion Hotel Thursday. Thomas Mulcair, along with NDP Nanaimo-Cowichan member of Parliament Jean Crowder and her SackvilleEastern Shore (Nova Scotia) counterpart Peter Stoffer, talked about the federal government’s closure of nine veterans affairs offices throughout the country, referring to it as “unacceptable.”

“[Veterans] are being told that they have to accept less, that they have to fill out forms, that they should get an app but they’ll never get to see a human being,” Mulcair said. “These are Canadians who didn’t ask any questions when they were told that they had to go and do their duty for their country; the least we can do is be there for them now.” He said that re-opening the offices would be a clear undertaking on the part of his party and pointed to a new veterans’ charter. “We’re going to put an end to this old system of constantly clawing back what was there. Instead of having people fill out forms for months and months, the services will be provided proac-

tively,” said Mulcair. He said it should be an obligation to be there for the women and men who have served the country, and said resources for people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder are paramount. “You need the psychiatrists, you need the psychologists,” he said. “Right now the resources just are not there. The protocols can be put in place. There are really good people working on this, but there’s simply not enough resources available. “The government hasn’t made it a priority and that’s why it’s a continuing problem, that’s why we have so many suicides, because we’re just not getting the services to them.”

Turbines turned on at water reservoir

ALMANAC Weather

bY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THe NewS BuLLeTIN

Politicians powered up generators at Nanaimo’s water reservoir last week. After two years of construction, the No. 1 reservoir project is now complete. It has been online since mid-April, but local dignitaries gathered at the Nanaimo Lakes Road site Thursday to officially celebrate the start-up of the $11.2-million facility. The facility will store the city’s drinking water and make the municipality one of the first in the province to recover energy through water, according to B.C. Hydro. Turbines, included in the reservoir system, are expected to generate 900 megawatts of hydro-electricity for the grid and produce $70,000 a year in revenue for the City of Nanaimo. The new structure replaces a century-old open air reservoir that no longer met Island Health’s water quality guidelines and is part of a larger, $69-million filtration system. “With Nanaimo’s growing population and it’s growing at about 1.75 to two per cent a year, we did have to have a higher standard of water delivery and water sourcing,” said Mayor John Ruttan. “People need not worry a bit about the quality of our water. We have the best now and we have the equipment to prove it.” The City of Nanaimo has been working on the new reservoir since 2012 to help prevent contamination of treated water that will eventually be pumped from the South Forks plant. The federal government chipped in $7.7 million for the project, while the city footed $3.5 million. James Lunney, member of parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, told the crowd at Thursday’s ceremony that he is very pleased the federal government participated in funding the project and thinks it’s “tremendous” the production of electricity has been included in the design. news@nanaimobulletin.com Connecting you with your community anytime, anywhere.

Motel owner frustrated by thefts

I

SuSpEctS caught on cameras.

By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

Aohan Cui, owner of the Value Lodge Motel on Nicol Street, knows who has been stealing his motel’s security cameras because he has footage of the culprits in the act. On May 18, one suspect with a bicycle and a black dog casually rode up to the back of the motel, got off the bike, ripped a security camera off a wall and, with the dog trotting beside him, casually rode off. Cui has filed police reports about four cameras, worth about $120 each, that have been stolen. Other businesses on Nicol Street have lost units, too, but no one has been arrested. Cui doesn’t fault already busy police and said apathy among business owners and local residents contributes to the problem. Bike thefts, car break-ins and other property crimes happen so regularly people just brush them off. He wants his neighbours to band together and make a stand against petty crime. Cui has hung posters showing suspects stealing cameras and posted videos of the

thefts on YouTube. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said security cameras are prime targets for theft. He advises getting advice from a security firm on how to install the devices to avoid them being stolen. For properties with high traffic and tran-

sient populations it’s best for owners to get to know their neighbours and schedule security patrols. “Form a Block Watch so you get to know your neighbours, so you have extra sets of eyes and ears on the parking lot and the motel – there are a number of components,” O’Brien said.

People can share tools, tinker and innovate around the clock in Nanaimo’s first-ever Makerspace. The hands-on community workshop is now open in central Nanaimo, giving hobbyists and entrepreneurs a chance to build and repair without the need to purchase their own equipment. According to founder Rebecca Kirk, Makerspace not only allows people access to work space 24 hours a day, but also use of donated tools and an opportunity to collaborate and share ideas. “I first became aware of it because my son helped develop Protospace in Calgary,” she said. “I thought, wow, this is really something Nanaimo needs: a collaborative incubator where creative people can come together and share their tools and space and curiosity.” Kirk says Nanaimo Makerspace and its three-room shop at 2221 McGarrigle Rd. will be able to host a wide range of skill sets and trades, from those who work in robotics, to engineers, industrial designers and metal workers. People who don’t have a workshop and want to tinker can also join. Membership is $40 a month. “Right now [we are] busy having work parties to adapt the space to what our needs

are and to bring equipment and machinery in,” said Kirk, who has seen growing requests for membership. “We have 32 paid members, 25 waiting in the queue. It’s unbelievable what’s happening.” Chris Caswell, owner of B.C. Robotics and a director with Makerspace, said for him the workshop is a place to meet like-minded people, discuss ideas and solve problems. It also means access to tools the average person can’t afford to have in his or her garage, he said. “There are a lot of people here who dreamed of this

being in Nanaimo,” said Caswell. “[The maker movement is] taking off in all sorts of places where you’d expect, like the Silicon Valley and New York ... but it will work here as well. It’s really good to see.” Those behind Makerspace say there’s also the potential for mentorship and maker fairs – public events for the community to learn about the space, projects and advances in technology. Entrepreneurs can also test out products. “It’s beyond exciting,” Kirk said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

High interest in late French immersion program By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

There will be a late-French immersion program at Ecole Quar ter way Elementar y School when the 2014-15 school year commences. The early immersion program runs from kindergarten to Grade 12 and in April, the school district gauged interest regarding an intensive late-immersion program that would begin in Grade 6. Students would be integrated with their early-immersion counterparts in Grade 8.

Peter Hewitt, district principal in charge of French programs, said seats in the 30-student program are filling up quickly. As of Thursday, only seven spots remained and he said there are enough students to move ahead with staffing. “We anticipate that, as word continues to spread around the community, that we’ll fill up those 30 spots between now and September and there may be a waitlist,” he said, adding that there are also kindergarten and Grade 1 spots available for early immersion

at North Oyster Elementary. The program affords students who enter the district after Grade 1 the opportunity for French immersion. Late immersion will see no English language arts instruction for the first year and when students enter Grade 7, the curriculum will see about an hour a day of English. The program was a recommendation of school boardcommissioned French Immersion Review in 2011. For more information, please call Hewitt at 250-754-6845. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanoose ready for development There’s no way to manufacture anything mixed about the message this month in Nanoose Bay. Approximately 300 people showed up for a public hearing regarding a massive expansion of Nanoose though development on lands owned by Fairwinds near Schooner Cove. Thirty people took the microphone to speak; 29 of them spoke in glowing terms about what the developments will do for their community. What’s more, they urged both the regional district and provincial government to provide approvals as expeditiously as possible for a project that’s been talked about for most of the last decade. The people have had their say. Importantly, Nanoose First Nations’ concerns have been respected and Chief David Bob has expressed his people’s support for the project. The unification of the people, especially when it wasn’t in opposition to something, seemed odd for a public hearing. But there was the message for both the directors of the regional district and the provincial government: get on with it. There is a good argument that the system used for passing municipal bylaws is flawed. By the time proposals reach the public hearing stage, the opportunity for questioning elected officials on their view is over. There is no back and forth. However, there are many weeks before a bylaw gets to the public hearing stage where the public can quiz politicians and staff and make their case. And just because a politician doesn’t agree with a certain point of view in the end, it doesn’t mean he or she hasn’t listened. There is, however, not much ambiguity in the Fairwinds case. The public wants regional district to move this forward. Perhaps within three years, a Nanoose Bay senior citizen will be able to walk to get a few groceries before enjoying a glass of wine or cup of tea at a pub facing Georgia Strait, all near his or her reasonably sized, properly supported home. Ah, aging in place sounds civilized, does it not? The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Politicians are starting to recognize transit’s importance to the economic, social and environmental health of Canadian cities. It’s even become a major issue in the Ontario election. Premier Kathleen Wynne committed $29 billion over 10 years to expand transit networks, but the budget failed to pass. Other parties have committed to funding improved transit if they’re elected, but all of them need to step up with concrete details and credible plans to ensure dedicated and sustained funding. Transit investments are a catalyst for change. They reduce barriers that strangle economic productivity and improve the well-being of commuters who would otherwise be stalled in gridlock. It’s time to put people ahead of politics and support dedicated transportation investments in all provinces. Doing so will transform the way our communities move and generate numerous other benefits. Effective transit and transportation solutions can spur economic productivity, protect the environment and improve quality of life. It’s time to get moving. www.davidsuzuki.com

Differing opinions shouldn’t be silenced by city To the Editor:

Re: Decision made to protect vulnerable groups, May 22. What were city councillors thinking when they made a decision to cancel a leadership simulcast? A number of world-class speakers were scheduled to present a vision for leadership, at a time when there is such an evident dearth of effective leaders. Coun. Fred Pattje’s motion was based on misinformation, defamation, ignorance and a mistaken sense that by preventing access to the facility, council would be taking the moral high ground against an agenda which did not exist. It was not a religious convention. It was a leadership conference for heaven’s sake! Now what? If council assumes the motion was logical and precedential, it will affect all future applications for the use of city properties. Could someone rent a city space for a birthday party if someone even peripheral to the event (such was the case with Leadercast) held a view that was contrary to Coun. Pattje? Disparate viewpoints are not indications of hatred. I implore council to rescind and

recant the motion and by way of public apology, assure us that as taxpayers, each of us will have as equal access to city facilities, no matter whether our world view is biblically based or secular.

Rick Higgins Nanaimo

To the Editor,

Re: Cancellations must be justified, Editorial, May 22. Council made the right choice in cancelling an event sponsored by a corporation and featuring a speaker who have espoused beliefs that are in conflict with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the City of Nanaimo non-discrimination policy and the non-discrimination policy of the VICC. I would venture to say that many citizens of Nanaimo, not just the LGBT citizens, find those views offensive. Taxpayers paid for the VICC and continue to support it through taxes. Does the presence of other sponsors or other speakers cancel the others out? Not in my opinion.

Sensationalized coverage does a disservice To the Editor,

To the Editor:

Re: Decision made to protect vulnerable groups, May 22. Nanaimo city council’s motion not to permit Leadercast to be held at Vancouver Island Conference Centre is disconcerting. It is not because the event could not pay its bills, but because one sponsor and one scheduled speaker are known to hold personal views about marriage and lifestyle that some find offensive. Contrary to the belief of city council, holding differing views on moral and personal issues such as marriage and lifestyle does not constitute a hate crime. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression. It also guarantees the freedom of peaceful assembly and association. As citizens of Nanaimo we must work to build a society where differing views and opinions can be respectfully discussed and those holding differing views on social and moral issues will not be vilified.

Whether a ferry sinking in Korea, a missing plane in Malaysia or four people shot in Nanaimo, the media vultures are bound to show up and start sticking cameras in the faces of people who just need to be left alone. This type of sensationalized coverage and absolute lack of respect has become so commonplace that I refuse to

watch those stories on the news or read about them in the paper. I understand that there are plenty of looky-loos who thrive on this type of reporting. If it wasn’t profitable, it wouldn’t be done, but I am of the firm belief that the media outlets and they way they cover this type of story exacerbate the base instincts of those who

hang on to every image of a grief-stricken family member or friend just trying to find a little peace among the madness. I was taught that journalism is about the who, what, where, why and when. I do not see how intruding into the cloud of anguish answers any of those questions.

Jazz band wins big BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

The jazz students at one Nanaimo high school have plenty of reasons to toot their own horn lately. Exhibit features student work BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

There are only a few more days left to check out high quality artwork from post-secondary students in Nanaimo. The Nanaimo Art Gallery’s two exhibits, Progressions and Art 486 Explorations, feature work from Vancouver Island University’s best and brightest student artists. The exhibits are currently on display at the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s VIU campus location until Friday (May 30). Justin McGrail, art history professor at VIU, explained that the exhibits represent months of hard work by the students. “Every year as a faculty member I am both surprised and given a great deal of satisfaction in that the students themselves,

their work is always original and the craft and the quality definitely reflects the training they receive at VIU,” McGrail said. “I think this year, for insistence, the ceramics are really quite original.” Progressions features paintings, sculpture, ceramics, drawings, photography, and printmaking from students in the visual art program, while Art 486 Explorations features predominantly 2-D pieces from the students in VIU’s Arts 486 program. “They did a really good job this year. The students and the professor do the hanging and so I think that people will find it to be a quite a visually striking exhibition,” McGrail said. An award winning singer/songwriter will be making his first ever performance in the Harbour City tonight. Nova Scotian Ian Sherwood will be showcasing his talents at the Dinghy Dock Pub tonight (May 27). Sherwood, a winner of the 2008 and 2010 Nova Scotia Musician of the Year Award is looking forward to his performance in the Harbour City. “I haven’t ever played Nanaimo before,” Sherwood said. “I am super excited about it.” Sherwood, who has played on Vancouver Island before, is looking forward to returning. “I love playing over in that part of the world. I used to go over all the time, years ago.” The folk-pop singer’s Nanaimo performance is the first stop in a Vancouver Island tour that will see the Sherwood stop in Sidney, Coombs, Duncan, North Saanich, Port Alberni, Ladysmith and Ucluelet. Timbermen score their first win Inbrief

SENIOR A LACROSSE team snaps tie, beats Adanacs by 9-7 score.

Pirates swept by Athletics The Nanaimo Hub CIty Paving Pirates got swept up by the competition this past weekend. Nanaimo lost four straight to the Okanagan Athletics on Saturday and Sunday in Kelowna, losing 14-1, 5-0, 6-1 and then 4-3. In the shutout loss, Pirates pitcher Garrett Goodall threw a complete game, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Shawn Arabsky hit a single and a double. In the next day’s early game Goodall singled and doubled. Zach Diewert had two RBIs in the weekend finale. Nanaimo plays the Parksville Royals on Wednesday (May 28) at 6 p.m. at Parksville’s Springwood Park.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Timbermen had to grind one out, and they did, for their first win of the season. The city’s senior A lacrosse team (1-2-1) defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs 9-7 on Sunday night in Western Lacrosse Association action at Frank Crane Arena. The game was a 7-7 tie for a long stretch of the third period before Jamie Sorensen scored the winning goal with three and a half minutes left. T-men goalie Zak Boychuk stretched his leg to make a key save and help preserve the victory. “We just kept at it. Kept at our system, kept at the game plan,” said Kaleb Toth, the team’s coach. “Lacrosse is a momentum sport … when we lost it, we gained it right back.” Both teams were slow starters on Sunday as the first period ended 1-1. Nanaimo went on a run during the second period and led by as much as 6-2, but Coquitlam chipped away. “We kept a level head. We had faith in our system and what our defence can do,” Boychuk said. “The big thing’s having faith in each other and we definitely did tonight and it showed.” On the winning goal, there was enough movement in the attacking zone to pull some Adanacs defenders away from their net, leaving a lane for Sorensen. He finished with two goals and two assists and Macgregor Johnston also scored twice. Paul Brebber, Devon Casey, Braden Kmita, Conrad Chapman and Doug Langlois into an empty net rounded out the scor-

ing and Cody Bremner had four assists. Shots were 57-32 for the visitors. Boychuk said the win will do “leaps and bounds” confidencewise for the Timbermen and Sorensen called it a “big team win.” “It’s going to give us a good edge moving on,” Sorensen said. “We know what we’re capable of and we know we can battle through and push through in those tough moments.”

GAME ON … The Timbermen have just one game next weekend; they visit the Burnaby Lakers on Friday (May 30). Next home action is June 8 when the Maple Ridge Burrards come to Frank Crane Arena for a 7 p.m. game … This article and two other colour action photos were first published online on Sunday night and can still be accessed at www.nanaimo bulletin.com/sports. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

We know we can battle and push through in those tough moments.

Highlanders rout Pinnacles

Juniors stretch unbeaten streak to five It wasn’t their best lacrosse, but it was enough to set a record. The junior A T-men defeated the Burnaby Lakers 11-7 on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena and then went to the mainland the next day and tied the Port Coquitlam Saints 10-10. Saturday’s win gave Nanaimo its first fourgame win streak in its 10-year club history, and though the win streak ended the next day, the

team’s current five-game undefeated streak is another franchise best. “They’re going into it believing they can beat anybody right now,” said Ken Morrison, the team’s coach, last week. “That’s the attitude we have right now.” In Saturday’s win, Brett Hawrys had four goals and two assists and Dane Sorensen scored a hat trick. Corey Shires, Cody Short, Travis Mickelson and Cole Kryworuchka

also scored and Pete Dubenski made 48 saves for the win. The next day Sorensen had another hat trick and Andrew Miller tallied twice. Shires had a goal and five helpers and Jeremy Roe, Mickelson, Hawrys and Kryworuchka were other scorers. GAME ON … The T-men (4-3-1) play the first-placed Coquitlam Adanacs (6-01) on Saturday (May 31) at 5 p.m. at Parksville’s Oceanside Place.

Two Nanaimo Judo Club athletes earned hardware after all their hard work. Alicia Fiandor and Braxton Clark both took bronze in their divisions at the Judo Canada championships in Saguenay, Que., held May 15-18. It was the first national medal for Fiandor and the fourth for Clark. The club sent six participants.

Nanaimo Timbermen player Dane Sorensen scores a goal against the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena.

The Highlanders kept up their high-scoring ways on the weekend. The Mid Isle FC team (1-0-1) defeated the Penticton Pinnacles 5-1 on Saturday in Pacific Coast Soccer League action at Ladysmith’s Forrest Field. Blaze Roberts scored a hat trick and Daragh Fitzgerald and Russell Lederer were other scorers. The team’s next home game is June 7 when it hosts West Vancouver at 2 p.m. at Merle Logan Field.

Trust guys with a passion for engineering to push the limits. For Bike to Work Week in Nanaimo (May 26 to June 1), employees at Inuktun Services are in it for the long haul –the long haul being a matter of perspective depending on what you’re pedalling. Steve Pilcher, an engineering technician who builds Inuktun prototypes, is pumping up the tire on his unicycle for his Friday commute. Pilcher, an avid cyclist, on- and offroad, required about one month to master the unicycle and has been riding one since 2008. His commute to work is about 10 kilometres each way – no big deal on a bike, but practically a marathon on a 24-inch wheel, off-

road, knobby-tired unicycle with no brakes that must be constantly pedalled to stay upright and keep moving forward at a top speed of around five kilometres per hour. But that won’t be Pilcher’s only ride to work. He’ll start the week riding his 1959 Viscount, three-speed cruiser bike, built by the Hercules Cycle and Motor Company, that he completely restored. “It was all rusted in the dump and I sandblasted it all and cleaned all the chrome up and got it working again,” Pilcher said. “I figure I’ll start out riding that Monday, the unicycle Friday and my other bikes during the week.” Craig Senych, vicepresident of operations, has dusted off his Trek 520 touring bike for a one-day, one-way commute from his home in Maple Bay. Senych, 53, estimates it will take him three and a half to four hours to make the 70-km commute. “When I was younger I used to ride a lot, but now I’m just a fat, cranky old man,” Senych said. “I still think I can do it, but just not as fast as I used to.”

i’ll start out riding that Monday, the unicycle Friday and my other bikes during the week. Senych is used to long rides from when he and his wife lived in Alberta and would cycle between Banff and Jasper, but he is carefully planning his route. Once in Nanaimo he’ll likely stick with the steady grade of the Nanaimo Parkway rather than take the Parkway Trail with its climbs, dips and weaves. Senych also knows a commute like that is not sustainable, especially since he will have to leave home at about 4 a.m. to make it to work on time. “Honestly, I don’t think I’m going to do it more than one half trip,” Senych said. “It’s a logistical issue for me because if I ride both ways I’ll be sleeping the entire next day.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

PLANNING A RENOVATION? DECIDE ON CHANGES FIRST Custom Homes|Renovations|Design & Build

The decision to renovate can be triggered by a number of things. You may need to repair or replace something, such as roofing, siding or windows. It may be time to "freshen up" a tiredlooking kitchen. Changes in your household, such as the arrival of a new child or the need for a home office may require changes to your home. Often, homeowners simply want to update their home so that it better suits their lifestyle. •

TAKE INVENTORY. Make a list of everything in your home that you need to or would like to change. This includes "must-do" repairs and replacements to maintain your home in good shape, as well as things that don't work well and things you would like to change. Finally, also note down what you really like about your home and wouldn't want to change; this can help you, and later your renovator, to focus on the assets of your home that you want to preserve. DESCRIBE EACH ITEM on your list briefly in terms of your day-to-day living experience. Here are a few examples of how homeowners describe some of the more common problems that lead to renovation: • "We only have one bathroom and with two teenagers and two working parents, getting everyone out the door in the morning is a real headache. I feel like I've been in a traffic jam before I even leave the house." • "We never really use our living room. It's too formal for the way we live, and with the smaller windows in these older homes, it's too dark and feels closed-in." MAKE SURE EVERYONE IN YOUR HOME PARTICIPATES. Professional renovators find that people often overlook things that are inconvenient in their homes simply because they are used to them. So take some time doing this inventory and get input from all members of the household. THINK ABOUT SEASONAL CONDITIONS. If you are planning your renovation in the summer, think back to last winter. Did you have enough closet space for coats and boots? Are there areas of your home that are drafty or hard to heat? Conversely, if your planning is taking place during the colder months, think about your lifestyle during the summer.

transport plan ready from city.

A century ago, visionaries saw that the age of mining coal in Nanaimo was coming to an end. They planned how to assist the miners and their families, and the region, adapt to the loss of what had been a key economic driver. “Five Acres” (now called Harewood) provided enough land for those families to feed

themselves. Nanaimo’s new Transportation Master Plan has just been released. It plans on doubling the number of sustainable trips (walking, cycling, and public transit) from 12 per cent to 24 per cent over the next 25 years, while still building and widening roads to accommodate even more car traffic. While the plan has many important and needed features, it essentially cements the role of the private automobile for the next gen-

Program supports youths in sport

jUMPsTART HelPs cover costs. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

With the cost of sports programs becoming prohibitive for some, the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program is available to provide opportunities for disadvantaged children. The program provides funding on an individual basis and assists children between the ages of four and 18 years old with costs related to sports activities, including registration and equipment. Misty Duifhuis, Nanaimo Jumpstart chapter group member and Nanaimo school district community school coordinator, said the program isn’t really for high-end or elite sport or training for competitive sport. “It’s just to get those kids who wouldn’t otherwise be participating in a sporting activity into something that they like and they are interested in and then we work with families here at the school to work that out and get the kids active,” she said. As a community school coordinator at Georgia Avenue Community School,

Duifhuis said she works with families, but there are other representatives – including for hockey, soccer, volleyball and baseball – in the chapter group, all with their own allotment of funds. “But as far as school, [it’s] things that fall outside of that, things like taekwondo, dance and that sort of thing that doesn’t have their own person [managing it], so then it would fall to the schools to help support that,” Duifhuis said. Donations can be made at Canadian Tire and Sport Chek in Nanaimo and money granted is dependent on money received. People can hold fundraisers for the program as well, Duifhuis said, adding that all money raised in Nanaimo stays in Nanaimo. “There are no administration charges that come out of it; it’s all done by volunteer basis, so all the different chapter members are volunteering their time to administrate it so it’s a great, great program,” Duifhuis said. To apply for the program, please call 1-877-616-6600. To get more information, please go to jumpstart.canadiantire.ca. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
