A local family is displaced after a fire gutted their house on Monday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was in the house at the time of the fire. A neighbour rescued the family dog, while firefighters were able to shoo the two cats safely out of the smoke-filled house. Grand Forks Fire Rescue chief Dale Heriot said the fire started in the backyard patio and spread to the roof and the attic of the house. The cause of the fire is uncertain, but Heriot said it is not suspicious. “We got called at 4:24 p.m.,” he told the Gazette. “I was first on the scene. When I arrived I saw smoke coming from the rear of the home. When I got out and walked to the backyard, there was smoke and flame on the back porch area.” Heriot said his crew did a great job minimizing the fire and smoke damage to the house. He estimated that the damage to the house was between $50,000 and $100,000. The homeowners were insured and are working with their insurance provider. Fire crews had to use chainsaws to cut holes in the roof to allow access to the attic and ventilate the house. “We cut a hole in the roof in two areas,” he said. “The rear of the house, the porch, and the overhanging eve is burnt. The rear door and windows in the back are broken from the heat. Not too much flame got into the house. Some got into the one bathroom. Other than that, for most of the interior it was just smoke and water damage.” There were 21 firefighters on scene as well as four engines, although only one was used, said Heriot. “I thought our knockdown was very good,” he added. “I thought we did a really good job of containing the fire to the area of origin. I think our guys did a great job in minimizing damage to the structure.”

Both sides in the teacher’s strike have settled in and are firing shots at the other side. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) announced last week that they would be entering phase two of job action which includes rotating strikes. Today (Wednesday) the teachers in the Boundary are on the picket line for the first time as they picket for a better deal with the government, as well as smaller class sizes and better composition. The government struck back by deciding to lock out teachers and dock teacher wages by 10 per cent for time missed. “All schools in School District 51 (SD51) will be closed on Wednesday,” said SD51 superintendent Kevin Argue on Monday. “Buses will not be running.” Argue said the lockout means teachers will be locked out of schools 45 minutes before the work day and 45 minutes after the work day. Argue said that some field trips may be af-

POLICE BRIEFS

Weed eater pinched

On May 19 at 8:19 a.m., Grand Forks RCMP received a report a gas-powered, orange-coloured weed eater that was stolen from the 400 block of 72nd Avenue in Grand Forks. “Unfortunately, there is no one that could be identified as a suspect and no witnesses,” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. The weed eater is valued at $300.

Graffiti at church

On May 20 at 9:35 a.m., RCMP received a complaint regarding graffiti sprayed with green paint at Gospel Chapel on Donaldson Drive. “There was some rather not nice things written on the side of the building, ” said Harrison.

fected by the job action. “The push from both sides are affecting field trips,” he said. “Teachers are in a real difficult spot right now. A lot of those types of activities—they’re looking at whether to go ahead with them or not. I don’t think there have been any decisions yet. But it’s looking less likely those things will occur.” Argue confirmed that the elementary district track meet has been cancelled. “The elementary district track meet was set for this Thursday,” said Argue. “We have the rotating strike day on Wednesday, which is a big day for preparation. Again, teachers would be in a place where the union is asking one thing; What BCPSEA’s lockout meant was another. We just didn’t want that angst in the system.” Argue said he did hope that local schools would have their own track meets. He added that no graduation ceremonies or events have so far been cancelled. Argue expects that rotating strikes will continue next week unless there is a settlement. He’s not sure if the strike day for the Boundary would be Wednesday again or not.

Police have no witnesses or suspects at this time. Anyone with any information is urged to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.

Scooter stolen

On May 21 at 6 p.m., RCMP received a report of a theft of a white and black electric scooter on 18th Street. “Neighbourhood inquiries indicated that a white male with long blonde hair and a noticeable limp was seen pushing the scooter down the back alley,” said Harrison. “The individual was identified and arrested by police and issued a promise to appear in court.” Harrison said that charges had not yet been laid. “However, our investigation is ongoing,” he said. “We’re still trying to locate the scooter.”

Jack Goddard Jr. speaks at the renaming ceremony on Saturday. The ceremony saw the official changing of the name of the Grand Forks Arena to the Jack Craig Lindsay photo Goddard Memorial Arena.

CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The weather could not have been nicer on Saturday as friends and family of Jack Goddard gathered for the renaming ceremony at Grand Forks Arena which will now be known as Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. Speaking at the event were Mayor Brian Taylor; Roly Russell, RDKB Area D director; John Mackey, RDKB director of facilities; Michael Wirischagin, councilor and RDKB recreation commission vice-chair; and Jack Goddard Jr. After the speeches and the official renaming by Mackey, the children of Jack Goddard Sr. gathered to cut a celebratory cake. Mackey told the Gazette that the Goddard family, Jack Jr. and his wife, approached the rec commission and made a presentation suggesting naming the arena after Jack Goddard. “Right from the get-go, everyone that heard the presentation and was involved at any level thought it was a great idea,” said Mackey. “As Jack said during his speech, it went really quickly. It was approved at the November (2013) RDKB board meeting in Trail. With the mayor sitting at the table, and Roly speaking, it was unanimous at that as well.” The RDKB already had a ceremony during the Old-Fashioned Christmas event in mid-December when the scoreboard with the new name was unveiled. “Basically, it was the same presentation but on the ice,” said Mackey. “We’d just been waiting on the weather to get the awning stripped

off and get it redone. We’re still waiting on the final sign for the other side of the building. I have to hand it to my crew, they got up a temporary sign so the family could see what it will look like.” Jack Goddard, who passed away last year at 93 years old, was a former Grand Forks mayor and councillor. He was instrumental in getting the arena built. He was very involved in all different sports and recreation. “I was definitely honoured,” said Jack Jr. “When I came to Grand Forks a lot of people would ask me why there wasn’t anything named after my dad. Everyone thought of it but we never pushed. People were saying the arena should be named after him because that’s his biggest legacy.” Jack Jr. said they started the process and were hopeful but didn’t think it would happen so quickly. “Everyone was just ecstatic about it,” he said. “A lot of people who didn’t know Dad but knew about him (thought it was great). Of course, the ones who grew up with Dad said it was the greatest thing that could happen in this town. It’s a great tribute for a person who did so much for the community. Obviously, the family is very honoured.” Jack Jr. said it was great that so many family members were able to come out to the ceremony. “Everyone was here,” he said. “His two sons and two daughters, all his grandchildren. It just worked out great. It was just super. It’s a great honour. Now every time someone comes to town they’ll see his name and they’ll remember who Dad was.”

Know what to expect May you live in interesting times. That familiar proverb can be seen as both a blessing and a curse. For Grand Forks residents, this is a time when city council and staff are embarking on some major investments. In addition to the water meter installation project, the city is also looking at repairs to major infrastructure like roads and sewers. Major projects, and how council deals with them, are often seen as a rod for councillors’ popularity. That “popularity” will be judged this November when residents will decide on the next council. Hopefully, voters will look past how a councillor has sided on one or two big issues and look at their overall “body of work.” Voters also need to think about how committed and hard-working a councillor is and how much they likely will be in the future. For those interested in joining council, the city offered a great opportunity at an information session on May 21 to learn some of the ropes. There is much more to the job than just making one or two decisions. It’s a very time consuming job. Every council meeting you have to make dozens of decisions that will impact different people depending on how you vote. As Mayor Taylor said recently, the best thing is to come out to council and learn the issues and to read up on the pertinent material as much as possible.

Students remain at the heart of the issues

ELENA PLOTNIKOFF Politics can be such a chaotic subject that their combination with education is best not to extend beyond a social studies classroom. Yet, these two conflicting subjects have once again come to a head. The history between the provincial government and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation tells a tale of a long fought war for a purpose which is too often forgotten: the welfare of the students. What sort of example is being set for the students? They are being shown that conflicts cannot be resolved through talking reasonably, that instead bouncing accusations

around is a suitable strategy. Every action of the clash between these opposing groups is meant to help the students but true intentions are being lost. There are a lot of disparities between small school districts, such as our own, and the ones representing massive schools in other parts of this province. The need for certain resources varies and specific issues differ in priority. Classrooms are more crowded in areas with more students and the amount of students with special considerations is also increased. While these issues are present in much smaller numbers in our region, their existence is still problematic. In my observations, there is a direct relation between the size of a classroom and the effectiveness in which a student can learn. The more students occupying a classroom the

thinner teachers must stretch themselves to attend to all of their needs. In my educational experience, teachers are very talented and resourceful people but they can only do so much with what they are given. These actions are hindering the students’ capability to learn. In these final weeks the coursework is piling up and any missed class time puts students at a major disadvantage. For classes with mandatory provincial exams, every hour of learning counts and missing days can make the difference between a student failing and a student passing. I do not know who is at the fault of all of the problems—I think many students do not— what we care about are the solutions. One can spend all day pointing fingers, placing the blame on any certain group or

person. What it comes down to is these actions are negatively impacting students. I care about the teachers, they have done more for me personally than the government has and therefore I feel a more direct loyalty to them. I want them to receive fair pay; I want them to be given the supplies necessary to properly do their jobs; I want their hard work to be noticed. Also, more selfishly, I want to learn. I want to go to school and learn what I need to before my exams, I want to be able to attend the prom that the grad executive put so much time and effort into planning, I want my little sister to be able to go on her year-end field trip that she is so excited for, and finally, I want to end my high school experience with the teachers that have guided me throughout.

This is not a swan song at all Editor, the Gazette: Thank you to the communities of Grand Forks and district for supporting GFREC during my tenure as director of recreation and facilities. I leave this position in July after 21 years of public service with no regrets. To all my staff, past and

present, I say it has been an honour and a pleasure to work with you. You are GFREC and the ideals it represents. To the citizens of our service area, Grand Forks, Area C and Area D, you have embraced the endless benefits of recreation. You have enriched your lives with an active liv-

ing lifestyle and you continue to improve the health of our Boundary Country community. Grand Forks is now my home and I will continue to enjoy the wonders of our natural environment in my retirement. John Mackey, Grand Forks

Head Start will host conference Letter to the Editor: The Head Start for Young Women program has been up and running since December, and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it. With six of us (Jaclyn Salter, Clarissa Palek, Kyra Hogan, Sarah Dorgelo, Carly Kruger and Kayla Hahn) plus our mentors (and a huge thank you to them—Cher Wyers, Teresa Taylor, and Myrna Logan, none of this would have been possible without you!), we’ve had an amazing chance to get involved with the community. Over the last six months, we’ve talked to members of the community, attended city council meetings, and been able to attend things such as

the AKBLG community planning session. We also recently had the chance to present to the Rotary Club, who was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for hosting us! The goal of our program is to increase the number of young women participating in local government from 21 per cent to 30 per cent by 2023, as 30 per cent is the number the UN states as the point where women’s needs can be accurately and fairly represented. With that in mind, we are pleased to be able to announce our project—a conference in early October inviting female politicians and youth from all over the RDKB to a three-day conference in Grand Forks

designed to give youth tools they could use to be elected (or just use in any job) and teach politicians how to interact with youth and boost the voter turnout in that age range. Our goal is to see a youth council established in every community that participates, including Grand Forks. We’ve been planning thoroughly over the last month, and we’re very excited to see this project carry through! The Head Start for Young Women project has been an absolutely incredible experience for all of us involved, and we’re sure everyone will benefit. Jaclyn Salter, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: The conservative government is slashing funding for education, research and public broadcasting, but there’s one part of our economy that enjoys remarkable support from the taxpayers of this country; the energy sector. The IMF (International Monetary Fund) in their latest report states the oil giants in Canada are subsides to the tune of $34 billion each year ($34 bil-

lion of your money and mine). Canada subsidizes the petroleum industry more than any other country in the world with the exception of the U.S.A. and Luxembourg. Big oil must be very pleased they have a friend in Ottawa, so willing to hand out billions of taxpayers’ dollars to companies that already earn billions of dollars by gouging us at the pumps. But that’s not all. The Alberta tar sands consumes 15

billion cubic meters of natural gas per year heating the thick gooey bitumen to recover the oil locked within. The taxpayer is on the hook, paying through tax breaks and subsidizes, for half of the natural gas used in the oil sands recovery. If you’re not happy contributing to big oil’s profits, remember there is an election next year. David Janzen, Grand Forks

Thumbs up to the City of Grand Forks for the rational and informative notice in last week’s Gazette on “Why Meters Matter”. Coupled with the equally enlightening page celebrating Canadian Environment Week, it all makes eminent sense. Whether this community is ready to respond positively and get down to tackling the increasingly serious business of environmental degradation is doubtful. And that means more legislation.

Water – Every Drop Counts:

Water meters matter!

Grand Forks, BC – Conserving water through the use of water meters will save the City of Grand Forks $1.1 million in consumption and operating costs. “There will be significant costs to upgrade and expand our water system unless we take steps to reduce and better manage our water use. The most effective way to preserve our water supply is to conserve through water meters,” says Roger Huston, Manager of Operations. Currently, all of the city’s drinking water comes from groundwater sources and, like many communities in southern BC, there are drought and water supply issues during the hot summer months and very high energy costs for pumping water during high demand. Without water meters, the City will need to build additional capacity and operational costs will continue to rise. An additional $1.1 million will be required to ensure the required fire flow to keep insurance rates low, he adds. With the existing demand and no further conservation, a third reservoir and new well will be required in the coming years, at a cost of $2.7 million. Water meters have been shown in other communities to reduce water use by 25 per cent — a similar reduction in Grand Forks will mean a new reservoir won’t be needed. “There are many reasons why we need to conserve water, including protecting our water source for future generations and reducing the City’s overall carbon footprint. We definitely see the benefit of installing water meters,” he added. Water conservation and the use of water meters is also a condition to receiving certain government grants. Because water meters will mean additional capacity in the underground infrastructure — the City won’t need to spend money on building larger pipes — Council can now consider additional funding for paving projects in 2014. This was included on the Council agenda at the May 26, 2014 regular Council Meeting for discussion. Check out our new Water Conservation tab on our website at www.grandforks.ca where you’ll find information on the water meter project and water conservation tips for inside and outside your home.

Session gives info about duties CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The municipal election may be several months away, but several potential candidates got a chance to learn about what a council does. On May 14, the City of Grand Forks held an information session at council chambers for potential candidates for the November election. About a dozen resident showed up to hear from Mayor Brian Taylor and other councillors as well as city administrative officer Doug Allin. “Mr. Allin and staff have put some real interesting (information) on the board that really summarizes some of the activities of council,” said Taylor at the meeting. “There are councillors here today to discuss their own personal experiences. We’re hoping we can have it interactive. We’re not here to campaign or politic. We want to stay away from issues and talk about process and the demands of the job.” Allin told the attendees that there was a great deal to being a member of council. He went through most of the major issues council has to deal with including: developing bylaws, policies and resolutions; being on committees and groups as liaisons for the city; going to conferences; being on top of the written material; attending committee of the whole and regular council meetings; working with industry; planning for the city; and more. “What we’ve done here is put to-

gether the process as we see it for local government and what the expectations are,” said Allin at the meeting. “We start off with the legislation of governance—we can pass policy within our organization but the federal legislation prevails. And then it comes down to the provincial legislation, and then it comes down to our local governments. We still have to work with the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “They’re basically in charge of local governments in our province. When we have questions or there are hard questions from the community we often go to that area. Council may ask us (staff), ‘what are we going to do about this?’ and we’ll go there.” Allin talked about how important it is for council and the city to consider the community charter and other legislative documents. “When we’re making decisions, you might ask, ‘What is all this bureaucratic red tape?’ While, we have to look at all those things,” he said. “Council has to consider all those things too. Council may ask us, ‘We want a motion to do this,’ and staff has to do all of this (preparation). Therein lies a bit of the challenge for the perception to the public.” The councillors then took questions from the audience. One attendee asked what each councillor’s highs and lows have been. Another asked what the qualities are for being a strong council member.

Cut level unchanged for TSA

SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

After an extensive timber supply review, deputy chief forester Diane Nicholls announced last week that the allowable annual cut for the Boundary Timber Supply Area (TSA) will remain at 700,000 cubic metres for 10 years. “After considering all of the available information on timber and non-timber resources in the Boundary TSA, I am confident that maintaining the allowable annual cut provides a balance between the need to support a mid-term timber supply and the potential need for harvesting capacity that may be required if the mountain pine beetle infesta-

tion worsens in the Boundary Timber Supply Area,” Nicholls said. The allowable annual cut in the Boundary TSA was first set at 700,000 cubic metres in 1996.The TSA covers a total area of about 659,000 hectares, with about 272,000 hectares available for timber harvesting. The Boundary TSA contains a diverse mix of tree species with leading stands of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, larch, spruce and subalpine fir (balsam). Other species include western redcedar, western hemlock, white pine, ponderosa pine, aspen and birch. Given the mix of tree species, this TSA has not been as adversely affected by the mountain pine beetle as areas in the central Interior.

‘Take back coast’ says MP Cullen CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project may be a long way away from the Boundary, but that didn’t stop about 80 people from attending a noon-hour presentation from Skeena-Bulkley Valley Member of Parliament Nathan Cullen. Cullen is touring through B.C. with his Take Back Our Coast tour and was in Grand Forks at the senior’s centre on May 21. He told people that the final decision on whether to go ahead with the project lies in the prime minister’s hands. The gateway project is a proposal to run a diluted bitumen pipeline 1,177 kilometres from the Alberta oil sands to B.C.’s north coast. Cullen was impressed with the turnout in Grand Forks and with how engaged the audience was. “At Wednesday lunchtime, you don’t know if you’ll get five people or 50,” he told the Gazette after the presentation. “I’m totally thrilled with the response and with people’s questions and their energy.” Cullen began the presenta-

tion by getting people to talk to the person sitting next to them about their name and how it came about. The introductory name game was designed to show people how much pride they have in their names and the origins of their names. After that, he talked about the dangers of running a pipeline across the mountainous terrain from Alberta to Kitimat. He also talked about how difficult it is for tankers to navigate through the channels outside Kitimat to get to the Pacific Ocean. He stated there would be a 9-14 per cent chance of a major oil spill. Cullen added that a world class clean-up effort for a big spill would be considered cleaning up 5-6 per cent of the spilled oil. The rest would be expected to dissipate into the water. Cullen also talked about opposition and impending lawsuits from First Nations. He told a story of how he sat with a group of enthusiastic Kitimat residents as they awaited the results of the non-binding referendum on whether locals were for or against the pipeline project. The townspeople voted 60 per

Also speaking at the event were local residents Margaret Steele, who talked about her efforts to stop clear-cutting at Lynch Creek North, and farmer Colleen Ross, who spoke about her own efforts protesting changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve. Cullen hopes that people in the Boundary, as well as throughout B.C. will spread the word about the project. “It’s like throwing a rock in a pond—there’s ripple effects,” he said. “People come here and then make connections to family and friends so that the politic math at the end of the day is impossible for the conservatives to maintain. They’ll come to some sense about this.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision on the Northern Gateway pipeline project is expected in June.

Grant used to educate, promote healthier living SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

A $5,000 grant from the B.C. government will help Grand Forks plan for a healthier community, Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson announced last week. The money will be used to educate city councillors on good practices for promoting health and wellbeing in their community through the Vital Signs project. “I am a big believer in getting outside, eating well and staying active,” Larson said. “This grant will benefit the residents of Grand Forks and help them live longer, healthier lives.” This grant is awarded under the Healthy Communities Capacity Building Grant, which supports local government in learning about the needs of their residents in the fields of mental health, physical activity and literacy. More than 150 applications were received from communities across the province for projects as diverse as active transportation planning and urban agriculture promotion.

“The Vital Signs project will measure the vitality of Grand Forks across a range of factors that contribute to the health and wellness of our community,” Sarah Winton, deputy corporate officer for the City of Grand Forks, said. “This will help us learn about the most pressing issues MLA in our community and LINDA LARSON set future priorities.” “Though B.C. is one of the healthiest provinces in Canada, we must continue to work together at all levels of government to foster health-minded citizens and communities,” Minister of Health Terry Lake said. “It is important for healthy living to start where we live, work, learn and play. These grants help support local governments to work collaboratively within their communities to make lasting change in the health of British Columbians.”

Grants now available for environmental projects COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST to the Grand Forks Gazette

Community groups, organizations and societies with project ideas that will maintain or enhance environmental conditions are invited to apply for a grant of up to $10,000, announced Columbia Basin Trust last week. Apply now through June 27 by visiting cbt.org/eg. Eligible projects includes ones that strengthen ecosystems, help communities mitigate and adapt to climate change, and support environmental education—all of which address goals in the Columbia Basin Trust’s (CBT) new Environment Strategic Plan. Through environment grants, the CBT has provided over $5 million during the past 12 years for environmental conservation, restoration, stewardship and education projects across the basin. The Kokanee Salmon School Program is one of the projects that has benefited from support. Delivered by the West Arm Outdoors Club, this program brings youth and adults to the Kokanee Creek spawning channel along Kootenay Lake to teach them about healthy habitats, life cycles, fisheries management and the importance of stewardship relative to Kokanee salmon. “We are looking for community-initiated and -supported projects that contribute to larger regional impacts,” said Sabrina Curtis, CBT director, sector initiatives. “We want these projects to make a real difference to both the local environment and residents of the entire basin area.” As in previous years, an environment grant intake, offering grants over $10,000, will take place in the fall. It will look different from what it has in the past, with refinements that build on a range of suggestions CBT has heard from residents, environmental experts and various organizations. Watch the website for details.

With Clara Hughes’ Big Ride in Grand Forks on Friday and this week being bicycle safety week, bikes are certainly in the spotlight. With the warm spring weather arriving, it’s certainly a great time to dust off the old pedal bike and hit the road. But whether you’re a new rider or a seasoned veteran cyclist, it’s not a bad idea to tune up your bike and get it ready for the road, says Christine Silver, ICBC road safety coordinator for the Okanagan and West Kootenays. “When you actually get out on the road, be sure to check the route you’re taking because some of the streets have been swept and some haven’t,” said Silver. “When you’re out on the road make sure you make a lot of shoulder checks so you know where the traffic is around you.” ICBC urges cyclists to ride at least one metre away from parked vehicles to avoid being hit by an opening door or a vehicle pulling into your lane from

And on a motorcycle too

the curb. Silver urges cyclists to check to make sure their brakes are good and their tires are inflated. “If you’re riding at night, make sure you have reflective gear—lights and that kind of thing,” she said. ICBC states that it is against the law to ride a bicycle on most sidewalks or in crosswalks. It puts pedestrians in danger and drivers don’t expect cyclists to enter the roadway from a sidewalk. Drivers also need to be aware of cyclists and be prepared to share the road. “There’s more cyclists out there so be aware of them,” said Silver. “Make eye contact and give them lots of space. When you’re in a parked vehicle and you’re going to open your door make a quick shoulder check to make sure there’s no cyclists coming.” Other ICBC tips for drivers include: If you’re entering the roadway from a laneway or parking lot, always scan for cyclists and other road users; Don’t honk your horn at a cyclist unless you need to give them a warning. A loud honk could startle them and even cause them to fall.

In the Southern Interior, on average, 110 cyclists are injured and two killed from May to October every year.

Drivers also need to be aware of motorcycles on the road. To help with that, RHC Insurance is sponsoring a motorcycle awareness event on Saturday at the Overwaitea parking lot. The event will feature a show and shine starting at 10 a.m. “We have a show and shine for people to bring their motorcycles to display,” said Diane Muscroft, team leader for RHC. “We give away ribbons and trophies. People come out and vote for who they think should win.” Muscroft said Kane’s Harley Davidson of Kelowna will be at the event with a display. They will also be donating the first place trophy for the best motorcycle. The event is all by donation with proceeds going to BETHS extreme weather shelter, which will be running a barbecue. A banner celebrating May as Motorcycle Awareness Month hangs across Central Ave. “It’s to encourage people to ‘Look twice, save a life.’” she said. “It’s for people to think about, the fact that there’s motorcycles out on the road.”

South of Elfrida, Africa’s Unfinished Symphony, Blue Collar B&B—a more diverse list of titles is hard to imagine. Yet here they are: on display at your library, on a poster advertising One Book One Kootenay, on the OBOK website, proudly proclaiming that they have been shortlisted for OBOK 2014. One Book One Kootenay, or OBOK, is a public library driven celebration of Kootenay/Boundary literature sponsored by the Kootenay Library Federation and a Columbia Basin Trust Sponsorship Grant. Each of the books on the list were written by Kootenay-based writers: South of Elfrida (Brindle & Glass, 2013) by Kalso’s Holley Rubinsky; Africa’s Unfinished Symphony (Grassroots Publishing Group, 2013) by Fauquier resident, Lucia Mann; and from Spar-

wood, Bobby Hutchinson, author of Blue Collar B&B (Langdon Street Press, 2009). The books were chosen by a committee of discerning readers from many titles written by Kootenay/Boundary authors within the last five years. The OBOK committee agreed that everyone in the Kootenay/Boundary should read these books in 2014. They are books that grab you, books that you can’t put down. Not only should you read these books, you should vote on the one you think should be this year’s OBOK. Vote at the Grand Forks and District Public Library anytime until Aug. 9. The books, ballots and a ballot box are available at the library. The selected OBOK will be announced on Sept. 8. You can meet the shortlisted authors at various events at Kootenay/Boundary libraries. Watch for announcements

Remember those who ensured our freedom. June 6th marks 70 years since allied troops landed on the beaches in Normandy in 1944. The largest invasion fleet ever assembled landed 156,000 troops on five beach heads in Normandy. D-Day was the turning point of WWII and a day to remember. Canadian troops landed that day on Juno beach and were courageous. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion ask that you take a moment out of your day on June 6th to remember those who gave everything to ensure our freedom and way of life today. In Remembrance to those of D-Day, June 6, 1944 - For us!

Kettle River Rambler RV Club member Brian “Swifty” Swift of Grand Forks settles into his spot at a recent Samboree. Submitted photo

Grand Forks Gazette

The end of June is going to be a busy time in and around Grand Forks. In addition to the GFI baseball tournament, there is the Samboree RV convention which goes June 25-29 at the curling rink and Dick Bartlett Park. The Samboree is put on by the local Kettle River Ramblers. The Ramblers are the local chapter of the Good Sam RV Club. There are over three million members of the Good Sam club from Mexico to Canada with chapters in most states and provinces. There are 1,400 members in B.C. divided into 25 chapters. Paul Pinard, provincial wagon master for B.C. and president of the local Kettle River Ramblers, helped start up the Kettle River chapter in 2009, which currently has 26 members. “I was a member of Good Sam for many years,” he said. “They made me a life member. I used to go to the Samborees in other places. I found out there was quite a few Good Sam members in Grand Forks and so I thought we could have our own club.” The club is not just for Grand Forks, though. The Ramblers feature members from throughout the Kettle River area from Christina Lake to Rock Creek. “Every year, the Good Sam club organizes Samborees, which are basically RV rallies for the members,” said Pinard. “We try to organize in smaller towns like Armstrong and Midway. There’s more room and the people are more welcoming.” Pinard said he’s been trying to get a Samboree in Grand Forks for years, but was finally able to get the go-ahead last year. Pinard expects between 250 and 300 RVs in town for the event. “Last year, we had 280 (in Armstrong),” he said.

meeting on June 9 at 7pm at the RDKB Office th

Midway hosted the Samboree in 2012 and had 279 RVs. “They always go good. We always get about the same number of people.” Pinard said the Samboree and the participants bring a big cash infusion into the local economies, particularly in the smaller towns. “We spend a lot of money in town,” he said. “We pay money to rent the curling rink. We have our own local entertainment. We have three catered meals, which are catered locally, of course. We have the Elks Lodge do a breakfast for us. Plus, what the people spend in town.” Pinard adds that many participants will check out local restaurants and shops. “Contrary to popular belief, we don’t always carry around all our food with us,” he said. Pinard said the Samboree is always a good time with plenty of events planned for the RVers. “We have regular games like bocce, beanbag baseball, volleyball. On Thursday, we’re having someone from the historical society coming to give us a talk. There’s also a tour of the museum planned.” Though most of the Samboree events are strictly for the RVers, there is a craft sale planned Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon at the curling rink, which is open to the general public. Pinard said he enjoys the social aspect of RVing as well as the discounts through the Good Sam RV Club. “For me, the appeal is that no matter where I go, I’m home every night,” he said. “I don’t like to sleep in a different bed every night. Having an RV is like being home.” Pinard adds that he’s met people from all over North America through the different Samborees he’s attended. “There’s a lot of friendships made,” he said. “Every year we see a lot of the same people. When you’re at a campground and you see someone has a Good Sam sign, you immediately have something to talk about.” The heat is coming, so be ready!! NOTICE OF WATER MAIN FLUSHING The Water Utility Department advises residents that we will be flushing water mains throughout the City during the months of April and May. Regular annual flushing is an important component of a comprehensive water management program. Flushing water mains are done as part of a scheduled preventative maintenance program to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes and helps maintain water quality in our system. Flushing will take place between the hours of 5:00 am and 3:30 pm. As we flush your area, you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please check your drinking, cooking, and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, simply turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear (approx 15 min. or more) Utility crews continue their water main flushing program to ensure the distribution system is refreshed and healthy. If you have any questions or if you experience any persistent water quality problems as a result of this maintenance program, please let us know at info@grandforks.ca or call Public Works at 250-442-4148.

Clara Hughes over 6,000 kilometres as she spreads awareness about mental health issues. Hughes has won six medals including a gold, two silvers and three bronzes and is the only person ever to win multiple medals in both the Winter and Summer Olympics. After a quick break to re-hydrate after her morning ride from Osoyoos, Hughes came out of the tour bus and addressed the crowd which consisted of young and old and everyone in between. “Thank you for welcoming me and our team to your town,” she told the crowd. Hughes thanked local resident Deb Cozza, who also talked to the crowd about her mental health issues. “Deb…I just want to thank you for sharing and your beautiful, beautiful courage,” said Hughes. “I’m sure you’ve helped so many people by sharing your struggle. That’s what it’s all about—opening up this conversation. You’ve really made our ride come to life here in Grand Forks and we’re so glad to roll into town and listen to you.” Hughes said she started the day in Osoyoos with a presentation at its high school. Then she and her two riding mates travelled up the Anarchist Mountain. She told the crowd she had ridden up it last year and toured through Grand Forks with her husband. “This is really special today,” she

told the Gazette. “There’s so much warmth here. To see the signs out (on the road) and the schools were out as we were rolling into town. To see that kind of support for what we’re doing, which is all about mental health awareness. That says a lot about the awareness that is already happening here. I would say also indicative of the level of stigma in places.” Hughes said that a lot of places she has visited would have people come out because they are curious but in Grand Forks the welcoming was truly warm and inviting. “It makes me feel really good on day 71,” she said. “It’s been a hard ride. It’s been intense. There’s been so many events and so many miles. To roll in and see that this matters in a community makes me feel really good about what we’re doing.” Hughes said that the ride is not about her raising money but she does encourage people who want to donate to do so to local mental health organizations. “That’s what we’re all about— bringing awareness and elevating the conversation,” she said. “Elevating the awareness for people who are doing great work in the community, most of which is volunteer, most of which runs off of donations. This is just the perfect day.” Hughes idea for doing the ride came from wanting to do more than just one day of awareness for

mental health. “I’ve been the spokesperson for Bell’s Let’s Talk for four years,” she said. “I wanted to do more than a day a year which is what my role was mainly. I thought, what better way to bring this conversation than by bike? The bike always draws people to you. It kind of has a level of curiousity: Where are you coming from? Where are you going? I thought, what a great way to roll into town with this conversation than by bike. We created this initiative. It’s been a dream come true. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life and totally worth it.” Hughes said she was first confronted with mental health issues at age 23 after her first Olympics. “Honestly, as an athlete I did have the support which is different than what most people face,” she said. “Everybody and everything was in place for me to get better. I just refused to accept it.” She eventually accepted the depression and sought out professional help. “It’s something that I manage,” she said. “It’s something that creeps back. I know the indications in my self and my husband knows the indications. I’ll probably (always) need to work with someone.” Hughes also said that being physically active helps her a great deal. “Maybe not always to this extent but it’s just going for a lit-

tle walk or a bike ride to clear my head,” she said. “It is my medicine. Not (usually) at this level. I wouldn’t suggest riding across Canada. It’s all about maintaining good mental health with having an outlet to talk things out and exercising and trying to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle.” Hughes encourages people, whether they suffer from mental health issues or know someone who does, to seek out the resources in the community. “You are going to have someone, if you don’t already, someone in your life you see struggling and you can help point them in the right direction,” said Hughes. “You never know, it might be you one day. Nobody is immune to

the effects of mental health. It can come into your life at anytime. The great thing is the sooner people get help with something, the less of a chance that it manifest at the deepest level. Really educate yourself on what resources are there. If you have time and maybe if you have money—give that time, give that money. Volunteer! Help out! Be a part of it! You can feel really good about what you’re doing in your backyard.” Anyone interested in donating to local mental health services is urged to go to Boundary Family and Individual Services website and click on the Donate Now button. Lake outpost proving popular

Digging can lead to explosive behaviour if you don’t know where the gas lines are.

CALL AT LEAST TWO FULL WORKING DAYS BEFORE YOU PLAN TO DIG.

Thank You

Boundary Family and Individual Services Society wishes to Thank the many families, associations, businesses and groups that generously donate to BFISS. Special thanks to: • The organizing families, volunteers and PV Ranch for holding a fundraiser for the BFISS Arts and Recreation Fund • The Grand Forks Choral Society for donating tickets to their productions • The Credit Union for their ongoing support to BFISS programs • The people who have donated to BFISS through “Clara’s Big Ride” • The Community Grants Program at the Phoenix Foundation • BFISS Volunteers and Peer Mentors • The local businesses that donate a variety of products and contribute to our Family Fun Events • The Grand Forks Gazette for donating this ad space For more information on how to donate or volunteer please visit the BFISS website at www.boundaryfamily.org Success By 6 supports parents and communities in creating healthy, nurturing environments for our youngest children, so that by age 6, they are physically, socially, and emotionally ready to succeed in school. Summer is almost here! And when it arrives, it will bring with it corn and watermelon and floating down the river and all those great things—as well as long, lazy days at the lake. We are lucky to have such a beautiful (and warm) lake, whether we’re swimming in it, canoeing, boating, or just sitting on the beach soaking it all in. For several years now we have had a once-a-week library outpost at the Christina Living Arts Centre, and I’m happy to say that each year this service gains in use and popularity. For instance, if we compare this past April to April 2013, we had a 300 per cent increase (!) in the number of books borrowed from our Lake outpost. Part of that is the increased awareness of what we’re offering, but another part is that we’re continuing to build and improve our collection—this month alone we’ve purchased dozens of new titles, including mysteries, literary fiction, kids books and more. We welcome any feedback on the collection, so please let us know if there are any genres, authors or titles that you’d like to see more of. On a related note, we are working on offering our very popular Lego Club at the Living Arts Centre, but we are in

z Check It Out AVI SILBERSTEIN

need of more Lego to do that. If you’ve got some kicking around at home, please consider donating it to us for that purpose. Lego Club And speaking of Lego, for the month of June we will have our Lego Club at the library on a weekly basis (June 6, 13, 20 and 27). We will continue to go with Friday afternoons, but we’ll be moving the time to 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. (instead of 1 – 3 p.m.). Susan Juby As I mentioned last week, we consider ourselves wonderfully lucky that one of B.C.s most loved writers, Susan Juby, will be here on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 a.m. She’ll be reading from and discussing two of her upcoming works, both of which will be published early next year: The Republic of Dirt (which is the sequel to Woefield Poultry Collective) and The Truth Commission. This is one you won’t want to miss! Mother Goose A reminder to those with tiny

tots—our parent-child mother goose program is still happening on Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., until June 21 (though we will be skipping June 7). For children ages 0-3, it’s a great opportunity to learn some songs, rhymes and stories for your little ones. Book Club Come pick up your copy of June’s book club selection—it’s the award-winning novel The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt.

IT’S JIVING TIME! Cheryl Ross (owner of A&W) and Ray Hanson, chair of the board for Habitat for Humanity Boundary, are ready for the sock hop this Friday night. For tickets to this fun fundraiser, call 250-442-2722 (local 229). Submitted photo

Young woman turns life around Increasingly, victims and communities affected by crime are requesting restorative measures, before, during or after other actions are taken. In this way, their needs can be better addressed by a system that has traditionally been focused on offenders. This story is from West Yorkshire in England. When Sarah punched a taxi driver in a drunken rage on New Year’s Eve, she realized she hit rock bottom. Unemployed and involved in an abusive relationship, the 26-year-old had lost two children to social services and was suffering from a long-term alcohol problem. She said, “I’ve had a drinking problem for a few years so I would drink to deal with things. I was out with friends on New Year’s Eve and we went to get a taxi, and I was all over the place and there was an argument. I don’t even know what happened— I just hit him.” The six-month community order by a court for common assault was merely her confirmation that her life was in danger of spilling out of control. However, the sentence also opened an unexpected window of opportunity. As part of the support she received from the probation service, Sarah, who lives in Thornhill Lees, was offered the chance to meet the man she assaulted. The meeting took place under a restorative justice scheme that is designed to allow offenders to explain why they committed the crime and victims to talk about the impact of the offense on their lives.

Sarah explained, “I was really nervous and felt very ashamed. I couldn’t even remember what he looked like. Then I found out he was quite a lot older than me and that made me feel even worse. But it went really well. We had a talk about our lives and we both shed a little tear. He ended up saying he felt like I was his daughter and he forgave me.” Since the meeting, Sarah has quit drinking and is about to start college courses in English and maths. She is also working with social services in the hope of being reunited with her children. She concluded, “If it hadn’t been for restorative justice, I don’t know what I would have done. I had to hit rock bottom before I could come back up. Whatever happens now, I’m not going back to the way things were.” The restorative justice facilitator commented, “She was quite an angry young lady, but you could see the transformation happening literally in front of your eyes. She hasn’t been arrested since, has stopped drinking and is turning her life around.” This particular process is offered to people who have been convicted of

The Grand Forks ATV Club is moving forward with scheduled monthly rides again this year. The many members enjoyed rides to Renata, Edgewood, Bulldog Tunnel, Williamson Lake and many other destinations last year; the club publishes monthly newsletters that outline events upcoming this year. As safety remains one of the priorities for the club, there will be a safety course offered for interested riders in mid June. There are many priority safety issues when one rides in the outdoors but the club feels that taking a certified safety course is at the top of the list, followed by “never ride alone”. Club memberships are available at B&F Sales and the Victorian Motel.

loops playing for the RiverDogs, is one of 40 youth ball players for the under 18 tournament which will take place Aug. 5-12. “There’s a Canadian team that was invited to go down to play at the Dominican Republic and I got selected,” said McDonald. “We’ll go there for a week and play six or seven different countries. We’ll get to play at a Major League Baseball complex. Apparently, there’ll be some kids that are going to get drafted. It should be really good.” McDonald was thrilled when he found out he was selected for the team. “I was very honoured,” he said. “It was nice to know all the hard work has payed off. I’m really excited about playing against teams from other countries. It is going to be a real life experience because most people in the Dominican live in poverty.” The Canada and U.S. team will be donating baseball gear and school supplies to local kids from the area who cannot afford it, said McDonald. McDonald is planning to return to Grand Forks in mid-June for graduation. He is currently completing Grade 12 online after leaving Grand Forks Secondary in March to join the RiverDogs. “It works out well,” he said. “I’m going to Thompson Rivers University (TRU) next year. So I just practice with the university team every day.” McDonald is planning on taking pre-human kinetics at TRU next year and then transferring to UBC for more studies and baseball. Anyone interested in sponsoring McDonald for his trip to the Dominican Republic can call him at 250-584-4353.

Robb’s Ride raises funds for BFISS

Gazette Staff

From the Grand Forks Cycling Club’s annual Robb’s Ride to Clara Hughes’ Big Ride, cycling and mental health were at the forefront this weekend in Grand Forks. Grand Forks Cycling Club through the Robb’s Ride event raised over $1,200 and donated it to the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society (BFISS) arts and recreation fund. This generous donation will enable many children in the Boundary region to attend summer camp, and have swimming lessons or other recreational, cultural or arts activities. Primarily the fund sends youth to

Pines Bible Camp. “While the fund was substantially down this year we are very pleased to report this generous donation has enabled us to reach our goal to send all the youth to camp whose parents are unable to afford this,” said Carol Mitchell, child and youth mental health counselor with BFISS. “Our most heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who supported Clara’s Big Ride, but especially to Robb’s Ride and all its generous participants,” she added. “It is most inspiring when cycling for mental health, meets a cycling club, that sends kids to a summer camp full of healthy phyisical activities.”

Grand Forks athletes perform well at Golden track meet Eleven tired, but successful local young athletes, members of the Grand Forks Legion J.O.T.P., returned to Grand Forks on Monday having taken part in a track and field meet at Golden. The rewards for the 2-1/2 days away from home were one gold, two silver and five bronze medals, a third place in the girls relay event for which there were no medals, a wealth of invaluable experience, new friends, and the feeling of a job well done. Competing against more than four hundred athletes from centres which included Lethbridge, Banff, Revelstoke, Vernon and Trail, our youngsters placed in the pole vault, hurdles, boys broad jump, triple jump and sprints.

Winning honours at the track meet at Golden over the holiday weekend were: Back row (left to right): Cheri Miller, Marcia Abrosimoff, Mary Ann Starchuk, Phillip Strukoff, Harold Strukoff, Walter Petko; (centre row) Magdalene Petko, Susan Ireland, Linda Gray; (kneeling) Sam Hancheroff, Harold Hancheroff.

Audrie Florence Wright Audrie was born on October 20, 1929. She grew up in the house that her grandfather had built on Joyce Road in Collingwood, Vancouver. Growing up in the thirties and 40’s in Collingwood was like growing up in a small town. The trolley driver on the Joyce loop knew her schedule and always waited while she ran to catch the interurban, which would take her to the pharmacy on Hastings where she worked. Tobogganing, skating on ponds, and skiing on Mt. Seymour were all part of a Vancouver winter in those days. She married Arthur Joseph Wright in 1951 and together they raised five children. Audrie’s love of play never went away; she always enjoyed her time at the cabin on Christina Lake; water-skiing, swimming, and boating. Gardening was another favorite of Audrie’s; she had a beautiful yard and was always willing to help friends and family with their yards. After retiring from Acres Drugstore Audrie joined the Hospital Auxiliary, and became part of the “morning crew” at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store. She is predeceased by her brother Douglas Cocroft, her husband, Arthur and her son Terence. She is survived by her children, Douglas (Bev) Wright, Karen (John) Mehmal, Marilyn (Rod) Clark, and Rick (Val) Wright, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Audrie will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her willingness to help everyone, her never-ending energy and unmatchable work and play ethic. She died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family at Boundary Hospital on Saturday, April 19, 2014. The family would like to thank the staff at Phoenix Manor ( Abbyfield ) for their excellent care of Audrie over the past two years, as well as the staff and nurses at the palliative care unit at Boundary Hospital for their care and support during a most difficult time. A tea in honor of Audrie will be held on Saturday June 7, 2014 at the Seniors Centre in City Park from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm everyone is welcome to attend.

Clyde was born in Grand Forks, BC on August 12, 1955 to Lucy and Sam Waselenkoff. He grew up in Grand Forks and after marrying the love of his life, Kim Lalande, they moved to Kamloops. Kim and Clyde worked together to raise their daughter Danielle and build their family business, Pacific Chemicals. Clyde worked tirelessly at his business and continued to do so at the time of his passing. Clyde was a very proud man and his greatest accomplishment in life was his daughter Danielle whom he loved dearly. Clyde was predeceased by his mom Lucy Dergousoff, his dad Samuel Waselenkoff and his brother Bobby. He leaves behind his loving family; his daughter Danielle, her husband Kent and grandchildren, Julian, Noelle and Isabelle, his best friend Kim, his brother Jerry, his sister Janice and brother-in-law Paul, his step-dad Max Dergousoff and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Please join us for a celebration of Clyde’s life on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 7252-7th St. in Grand Forks, BC at 12:00 (noon). Lunch will be provided by the family, following the service at the church.

Roy Andrew Sandell Roy Andrew Sandell, 76, of Maple Ridge (formerly of Grand Forks, BC), passed away at Ridge Meadows Hospital on March 16, 2014. Roy, born on January 29, 1938 in Vancouver, BC, was predeceased by his parents Andrew Sandell and Milka Jylka and his brother Armant Sandell. Roy is survived by his son, Tony Sandell of Coquitlam, BC; step-daughter, Dana Bis of Langley, BC; and long-time companion and friend, Dale Hunter of Maple Ridge, BC. Roy was a concrete finisher for many years in Maple Ridge and spent time working at Pacific Abrasives in Grand Forks. Many will remember Roy by his unforgettable eyebrows which were long enough to act as a built-in visor and protected his eyes from the sun. When Roy wasn’t watching tennis, acting as a crime reporter from his balcony or practicing to be a brooding Finn, he could be found trying to explain Seinfeld episodes while laughing so hysterically he couldn’t breathe or be understood. Grandpa Roy will especially be missed by his grandchildren, Emily Sandell and Nathan Bis, who will no longer have their appetites ruined by unauthorized cookies right before dinner. Those wishing to honor Roy’s memory are asked to send their condolences to the vodka and tobacco industries that are, no doubt, wondering why sales have plummeted. A celebration of life will be held at: Maple Ridge Legion, Branch #88, 12101 224th Street Maple Ridge, BC June 14, 2014 from 11 am to 2 pm

Anne Marien poses in front of a 1950 Ford; the 78th annual convention of the Diocesan CWL featured a 1950s theme. Submitted photo

ANNE MARIEN

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Nelson Diocesan Catholic Women’s League 78th annual convention was held May 1-4 at Christ the King in Oliver, B.C. The theme “We have seen the Lord” Anne Marien, Diocesan community life chairperson from Sacred Heart Parish, attended. Fr. Rex Velmonte, our spiritual advisor, welcomed the ladies. “May this convention inspire us, we should all try our best each and every day to bring Christ to others. Remember we are hands, mouth, feet, eyes, ears, and heart of Jesus.” Fr. Rex has completed his five-year term as spiritual advisor; Bishop John Corriveau appointed him for another five-year term. On Friday our guest speaker, Sister Shelly Grant of the congregation of Notre Dame, began her talk on her work with the First Nations. She has worked with them for 25 years beginning in the Maritimes, then up north in the Yukon. She is now working in the Okanagan. Her message was very enlightening and clear: How do we build relationships with indigenous people? You have to walk with them. Money does not fix the problem that exists for the native people. She very strongly believes that God is the electricity between people’s relationships. There are 11 reserves in our Diocesan, she added. In the afternoon, Ernie Dumas began his presentation on “Highway to Healing.” He advised that they have helped four families since November, one family still ongoing. They receive from $500 to $2,500 as needed. The financial need of the family is secondary...the help is both emotional and financial. A story shared was of a young man of 17 who had a motorcycle accident and is paralyzed from his neck down. Families that have to go out of their area to get medical help for their children up to 18 years old are supported. They are called “H2H Support Society” and are a registered charity. It is emotional support for the Oliver area. Pat Deppiesse, provincial president-elect, led the ladies in a provincial workshop: “Expressing our God-given gift through standing committees.” It was well presented, informative and provided food for thought and many new ideas for new and older members. Friday evening was a 1950 theme. All the ladies did their best to dress in their flared skirts, peasant blouses and saddle shoes. A 1950 Ford was on display for picture taking. A banquet followed and was enNotice of Service joyed by all. A big thank you A service will be held for was extended to the Knights Of Columbus; to CWL Council of Our Lady of Lourdes of st on Saturday, May 31 Keremeos for lunches 11:00 a.m. at River Valley and coffee breaks; and Community Church to St. Anne’s, Osoyoos 2826 75th Avenue. for the banquets Friday and Saturday evenings.

The latest exhibit at the gallery 2—Before There Was Light—was officially opened with a reception on Friday. Artist Peter Morin was in attendance, as well as students from SD51’s Aboriginal Education program. Morin, who is a Tahlatan performance artist, writer and curator, said the performance is based on the Tahlatan story on what the world was like before the coming of light when mountain goats lived in valleys and fish roamed the land. The exhibition will be a continuation of Morin’s exploration of issues of de-colonization and indigenous identity and language. The reception featured a sneak peak at the exhibit as well as a chance for those in attendance to partake in a time travel machine performance. “We were time travelling,” said Hecht, coordinator for SD51’s Aboriginal Education program. “The artist, Peter Morin, has come from Brandon where he teaches at a university there. He came to work with our students developing a time travel machine.”

WASHING, WISHING

Grade 7 students from Hutton Elementary were at Overwaitea on Saturday raising money for a field trip by having a car wash and hot dog sale. The students and parents are excited about the field trip to the Vancouver Aquarium, which is planned for June 2. There is no word yet on whether the trip will be cancelled due to the teacher strike action/ Craig Lindsay photo lockout.

Hecht said the time travel machine works through the use of Aboriginal drums, which the students made for the exhibit. “It’s based on realizing the effects of the residential school to Aboriginal people and how much their community was broken apart in that time period,” she said. “There was a time when people weren’t allowed to drum. That was illegal. He told the kids that doing what we did here today, we would’ve been thrown in jail.” Hecht said her experience with the time machine was very powerful. “It was very visual for me,” she said. “I travelled into a different space with a different dimension. It was very short and then I came back. The experience of standing in the centre of the drums is quite amazing. It does take you back to another time. To me, it took me back to my childhood. “It was very powerful. It made you realize that when the government outlawed those drums and all the cultural activities connected to it, they did it for a reason. That was what connected the aboriginal community.” The exhibit will be showing until July 12.
