Frustration-levels were high around the Inner core Parking lot last week as monthly pass holders found the lot filled with newcomers. Shuswap children’s Association executive director June Stewart said that on two occasions over the past week her employees were unable to use the association’s parking passes for the Inner core lot as all the spaces were full. “We pay for four or five passes in the back here – have done it for years,” said Stewart. “We have one spot that’s actually designated and that one is fine. You pay extra for that, like $35 a month. But the rest are all $25-a-month passes, and twice this week we have not been able to park.” Stewart says the sudden increase in vehicles at the Inner core correlates with the recent changeover from free to paid parking at the city’s Hudson Avenue Parking lot, adjacent to the Salmar Grand. “I expect there will be a bunch of spots open up (at the Hudson lot)… I don’t think they’ve thought about the implication of people wanting to park closer to work,” said Stewart. city bylaw officer Marcel Bedard, who also plays an advisory role on the city’s downtown Parking commission, concurs. “We weren’t expecting people to move up and, when you think about it, hmm, it makes sense,” said Bedard. “If I’ve got to pay, I might as well park a block closer.” Bedard said the issue and potential solutions will be reviewed at next month’s parking commission meeting. In the interim, the city has decided to allow Inner core pass holders to park at the Hudson lot, while putting a freeze on the release of new monthly passes for the Inner core. “The city will not be issuing any new monthly passes for the Inner core Parking lot at this time. However, the city will renew monthly passes for those individuals or companies who currently have passes which are set to expire,” confirmed city engineering and public works director Rob niewenhuizen via email. Stewart, however, argues her staff should be able to park where they’ve paid to park. “I have loads of part-time people, so they come in, first-come, first-served for the passes and they See Drivers on page A2

The B.c. government responded to the strike action that School district #83 has participated in by issuing a partial lockout to teachers in the province. The lockout, which was issued on May 26, prevents teachers from being at work prior to 45 minutes before classes begin and no later than 45 minutes after classes are dismissed. Teachers will also be unable to provide supervision to students during the lunch hour and recess. The B.c. Teachers Federation made the decision to proceed with rotating strikes across the province as they have been at the bargaining table for the past 16 months, asking the government for smaller class sizes, more support for students and a salary increase of 13.75 per cent over the next four years.

Teachers in School district #83, who were behind picket lines on Tuesday, say they are also taking action because the district has seen $650,000 in budget cuts that directly relate to teachers and service levels for the 2014-2015 school year. The strikes are part of a two-stage plan that was voted on in March and began with teachers decreasing their administrative and supervisory duties. “Teachers in our community, like teachers across B.c., don’t take this job action lightly,” said Brenda O’dell, president of the north Okanagan-Shuswap Teachers’ Association. “As teachers, we care deeply about our students and we empathize with parents who have to re-work their schedules. Many of us are parents, too, and that is one of the reasons we are taking this action.” Teachers who walked off the job had

their pay cut by 10 per cent by the province, and although the rotating strikes are scheduled to end by Friday, teachers are prepared to continue if a resolution isn’t reached. The B.c. government doesn’t have any plans to legislate a settlement in the near future and offered a 6.5 per cent pay hike over six years and a $1,200 signing bonus if an agreement is reached by the end of June. BcTF rejected their offer. “We want the BcTF to come to the table with a wage response that is reasonable and within the zone of other public sector unions,” said education Minister Peter Fassbender. “We expect them to come with something that is affordable for taxpayers.” Although not restricted by the lockout, extracurricular activities such as See Unknown on page A2

Education: Wants public to take back their system.

The dispute over public education in the province has one parent starting her own protest in hopes one voice will turn into hundreds or thousands. Louise Wallace is the parent of two boys, one in Grade 4, the other in Grade 6. She is frustrated at the ongoing dispute and feeling powerless, so she has decided to take her own strike day and let Education Minister Peter Fassbender and Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo know exactly what kind of financial impact this is having on the economy. Pending the outcome of the rotating strikes, Wallace is also considering pulling her two kids out of school for the rest of the year. Realizing that every parent’s situation is different, Wallace is encouraging other parents to take some type of action to let elected officials know what impact the teachers bargaining situation is having. “We need to remember that we own public education. My view is

that Christy Clark does not share the majority of B.C. citizen’s appreciation for the importance of a healthy public education system. So this is about parents taking back ownership of the system. My suggestion is to do a peaceful, personal protest act and share it with your friends, your networks and the political reps.” Wallace suggests every parent send an email or letter to their MLA about how the job action is affecting them. “For some parents it may not be reasonable to take the day off, so they have to pay out of their pockets for day care. We should be letting politicians know that this money has come out of our pockets and is money that has to be made up somewhere, money that isn’t being spent in other areas of the economy.” Wallace points out that School District #83 is the Shuswap’s largest employer, something she believes is often overlooked. “Public education is a powerful economic en-

There could be good news on the horizon for drivers who regularly cross the Salmon River Bridge. After years of accidents, near-misses and complaints from local politicians and drivers, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has begun the process to replace the bridge. The ministry has issued a Request For Qualifications on BC Bid for a 4.21- kilometre section of the TransCanada Highway west of Salmon Arm. The project involves four-laning the stretch of highway, upgrading the Second Nations Road intersection, eliminating the First Avenue SW intersec-

tion and the Salmon Arm Road intersection, introducing a gradeseparated facility to replace the eliminated intersections, plus the introduction of frontage roads and a new fourlane bridge over the Salmon River. This initial request for qualifications, which closes at 2 p.m. June 6, is for a consultant to provide functional and detail design services, cost estimates and contract specifications. Structural design, as required for the project, will be supplied by the province. The ministry expects to have a contract in place with the preferred consultant by August, with the tender package completed by spring 2016. “Hearing that now, I

It’s the one thing that would make all Salmon Arm happy,” said an excited Mayor Nancy Cooper yesterday. “I had heard rumblings but didn’t know about timelines or plans, so I didn’t want to say anything.” But timelines for when the work will begin or be completed are not yet on the horizon. “This was one of seven proposed projects included for public discussion during the Highway 1 Kamloops to Alberta Four-Laning Program’s community engagement, held in February/March 2013,” advised the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in a May 27 email. “The project is still in design. There is no timeline for construction.”

Not only was the theme collaboration, so was the method. Last week’s Together Shuswap workshop, formerly Moving Forward Together, brought people from diverse backgrounds together in the same room, but also together in shared purpose and increased understanding. Held at the Adams Lake Recreation and Conference Centre in Chase on May 21 and 22, the workshop expanded on the focus of previous meetings – regional planning and deepening collaboration between participants, both First Nations and others. Bonnie Thomas, a member of the organizing committee along with Craig Duckchief, Dorothy Argent, Janet McClean Senft and Jason Woodman-Simmonds, came away uplifted. “I was completely ecstatic. By the end of the two days – I’m really emotional about this, it’s something my mother always wanted, she wanted all the people to come together regardless of your background, from all levels,” Thomas said, referring to respected Neskonlith elder Mary Thomas. “We had the grassroots people there, the service providers there, and then we had the political people there, both on and off reserve. I guess for me, that was an accomplishment.” At last June’s workshop held at Quaaout Lodge, a list of ‘championed’ activities was created, after participants were asked if they’d like to champion an activity dealing with an issue. A list of 26 was eventually refined to a

total of 16. Issues ranged from planning regional transportation to meet diverse needs, to building a regional artist data base and network of aboriginal artists. Those 16 groups are ongoing and meet quarterly. Thomas was a moderator of one of the break-out groups, where she witnessed great willingness to learn and collaborate. “For me, it was really, really, one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in a very long time.” She said she was also very inspired by the First Nations pre-

Changes to Salmon Arm’s transit system instituted last December have, so far, had little impact on ridership. In a presentation to city council

ing. Overall, system ridership has stayed the same, with a slight decrease of approximately three per cent. But Newlove said this could be attributed to the Salmon ArmSilver Creek route being removed due to low ridership. The College-Hillcrest route is

currently seeing the highest average number of rides per day, followed by the West Loop and the Shoppers Shuttle. But Newlove said all of the routes are seeing good ridership numbers. Coun. Debbie Cannon introduced a motion to have staff look

at expanding transit service to the industrial park, and to run in the evenings. The motion was defeated, however, with Mayor Nancy Cooper and Couns. Alan Harrison, Denise Reimer and Ken Jamieson preferring to wait until the changes have been in effect a full year.

Give bike riders a brake I had the best of intentions when it came to Bike to Work week. A few roadblocks cropped up in my way. There was my sick kid, which has kept me pretty much housebound. And I was simply not up to biking to the grocery store to haul home copious amounts of Pedialyte, saltines and chicken broth. The bad news was, it kept me off my bike for terrific events like Friday’s Twilight Family Ride. The good news was, that I wasn’t using my car either, so at least I was following through on a commitment not to use a gas-powered vehicle. But while I may have missed out on some of the fun of riding in the middle of the downtown streets or using pedal power to earn some pancakes at Monday morning’s breakfast, the week is not over. Before the end of the week, I plan to don my bike helmet, plant my duff on my bike seat and ride with my children to school. No excuses. It’s not too late for the rest of you either. Give pedal power a go. It’s cheap, environmentally friendly and your heart, lungs and legs will thank you. And for those of you who can’t stay out of your cars, be sure to take a little extra caution when sharing the road with cyclists. This is where I’m going to air a few beefs I have with drivers lately. Is it just me, or do a large number of drivers in Salmon Arm simply not understand what a crosswalk means? Or is there just a complete lack of common courtesy? A mother recently spoke to me about how frequently she tries to cross roads with her four children at crosswalks, only to be totally ignored or even have drivers try to zoom through around them. So I started paying a little more attention myself. And I found she is right. I saw people plow right on by many marked crossings, even on Okanagan Avenue, where there are recently installed crossing lights. I saw a family of four get off their bikes and wait to cross 20th Street, and they waited, and waited as five cars drove through before one stopped. Many people seem to have no idea that pedestrians have the right of way at marked crossings. That means drivers should stop to let people cross. Pedestrians should not simply walk out into traffic in hopes of a driver screeching to a halt in time. While it might be an easy thing to forget as your mind is on your destination, is it really so much to ask you to stop for a few seconds to let someone cross? It’s just good manners.

Heatstroke strikes pets quickly The weather is getting warmer, and so comes the warning about hot dogs. Every year, we hear about dogs being left in vehicles while the drivers pop into a store or to the ATM, thinking they will only be gone for a second. According to the B.C. SPCA, the temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill your pet. Leaving your pet in a car with the air conditioning on is also taking a risk as many pets have died as the result of faulty air-conditioning systems. Dogs and cats cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. In summer, the air and upholstery in a vehicle can heat up to

high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves in this manner. Signs of a dog in distress include exaggerated panting, rapid or erratic pulse, salivation, anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremors, lack of co-ordination, overly red lips and tongue, convulsions, collapse, coma, and death. So if you can’t leave your pet at home, take it to a friend’s, or bring it with you, leash it in a shady area if possible, with some water. It will only take a second. And if you see an animal in distress, look for the owner, or call the SPCA’s Animal Cruelty Hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or, as a last resort, call the RCMP. -Vernon Morning Star

Government’s record disrespects education Budget openness necessary Both provincial government and local school boards play a different, but vital, financial role in public education. One holds the purse strings while the other allocates the funds. Taxpayers and voters need to keep both bodies accountable in regards to disbursal and spending of public money. Consider the following example that illustrates the value of looking closely at the allocation of funds, versus simply demanding more: You bring home a modest paycheque. You decide to feed your family lobster every night, and send the children to school in rags. After negative feedback from concerned neighbours, you demand more money from your employer, telling them the children are dressed in rags. You get a raise, but still decide to feed your family lobster every night, and your children are still wearing rags to school. Nothing has been accomplished. Surely our school district could use more funding, but the public should also take an interest into how it’s being spent. Just days before the 2014/15 proposed budget was voted on, the school district released a 12-page document highlighting proposed cuts for public review and comment. This was the first time a document like this has been released in advance of the voting. To me, that is shocking. At this budget meeting, trustees asked those fighting against the cuts for their ideas on ways to save. No one could answer with confidence. Why not? Because there was no detailed budget released from which anyone could draw insightful analysis or comment. Though the step to release the proposed budget cuts is a promising one, the school board will need to be increasingly more transparent in terms of releasing information if they are to more fully engage the community in the allocation process. I call on the local school district and parents to take action, especially considering they are also victims of provincial funding cutbacks. The school board is required to balance the budget, but is given less funding despite downloaded costs. I think it’s scandalous on the part of the B.C. government, who recently spent almost $600 million on a stadium roof. That’s more important than education? How about the fact that the Christy Clark Government twice lost BC Supreme Court decisions regarding negotiations with the BCTF? The government was found to have illegally removed class size and composition language from the teachers’ contract, then lost a second court decision that found they did not restore those rights. The government was fined $2 million dollars for that.

The court also found that the government negotiated in bad faith, trying to provoke a strike so they could legislate a contract rather than negotiate. I believe the goal here is to de-fund the system to the point of collapse, and break the union, so they can privatize the system. The same applies to health care. If you have any care at all for the future of our society, take note of what is happening in our schools. Visit a classroom. Talk to a teacher. It’s time to stop supporting a government simply out of ideology. Look at what is really going on. Do we really want to see education and health run by for-profit corporations? It’s time to impose Canadian values on our governments. Speak up for students. Speak up for the future of Canada. Jeff Nelson

Parents to support stand for better education for students Mr. Fassbender and Mr Kyllo: I’m proud that our teachers in Salmon Arm (and all over B.C.) are taking a stand for our kids and I support their decision to take action. The issues that they are fighting for affect our children: smaller class sizes, better school funding, more specialist teachers and a cost-of-living increase. I trust our teachers to know what they need for healthy and productive classrooms. As frontline workers with the children in B.C., we need to follow

their lead; they know what’s good for learning, good for schools and good for our kids. My husband and I will be joining them as they take job action and we are asking other parents to do so as well. I’m asking you to settle a fair contract for these teachers. Trust their work, their judgment and their concerns. Laurel Albina

I relay for my grandfather, my sister, my friend, and my co-workers.

But most importantly, I relay for my daughter. I want for her to grow up in a world where cancer isn’t feared. A world where the words ‘it’s cancer’ mean help, support, and absolute survival. Ronald Wood, Ted Burrell, Les Wood, Peter Bird and George Sinclair had the first swim of the year at the Canoe wharf. Maina June was chosen May Queen with Elizabeth Thompson, Evelyn McGuire, Gladys Throop, Lauren Boutwell and Gladys Macleod as her maids of honour. Western Canada received approximately 7,000 new settlers from overseas during the month of April. This marked the advance guard of thousands more who would be pouring into the West over the succeeding months.

1934

At the district council meeting, one man appealed for clothing and shoes for his children, stating they would soon be naked and there was no grub in the house. Coun. Lundy declared they had a duty to feed the children, but if they started supplying clothing, the taxpayers could not keep it up. The family in question was on a $10 a month allowance.

1944

Ernest Doe had just completed a second volume of Salmon Arm history, dealing mostly with the municipality and councils, and including a list of the city election results since 1912. A book written by Mr. Doe the proceeding year covered most of the history of Salmon Arm from 1912 to 1944. Pte. Laurence Boschalk of Tappen was home on leave.

1954

A new frontage tax on all land served by the municipal water distribution system was to be imposed by Salmon Arm municipality to provide funds for extension of the water system. Mrs. A.S. McKim, Mrs. N. Newnes, Mrs. S.E. Edgar and Mrs. Robert Turner of the Shuswap chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, motored to Chelan, Washington to attend the International Past Matrons’ convention.

First United Church was the site of a special boat launch earlier this month. Thirty years in the works, a replica of the Thomas Crosby V was unveiled by its builder, retired United Church minister Bob Scales, who sailed the original and other vessels along the province’s West Coast for many years. Already a candidate for the ministry, Scales was 27 when he signed onto the Thomas Crosby IV as a summer deckhand in 1957 in a program that was financed through the United Church of Canada’s mission and service fund. “That particular boat ran in the area from Cape Scott on the northwest point of Vancouver Island to Green Island, a light station northwest of Prince Rupert,” says Scales. “It was primarily a visiting ministry to isolated people – lighthouses, isolated settlers in little coves and bays and also transportation for moving people about and delivering groceries occasionally.” Crews were on a 22 days out, 14 days in rotation and each little place was visited seven or eight times a year. Three months into his stint as a deckhand, Scales was asked to skipper a smaller boat, the Robert C. Scott out of Alert Bay. “I was tossed into the deep end,” he says chuckling about the quick promotion. Scales skippered the boat for about a year and says he completed his theological training “in fits and starts.” “It was a four-year program that took me seven, with time out to do other things, and make a little money,” he says. Scales served as a skipper-missionary on the 63-foot Thomas Crosby IV from 1962 to 1964. Its successor and the boat that served as a model for Scales’ replica was the 80-foot Thomas Crosby V that sailed with a crew of six, including a nurse. “I guess I got a little salt water in my veins. I liked the combination of the handson work of operating the vessel and the pastoral visiting with people and groups,” says the Salmon Arm resident, who grew up in Salmon Arm and attended First United Church. He says the coastal visits were well-received, especially during the quiet winter

Numerous fish canneries dotted the coast at the time and people migrated to them for fishing season, says Scales, noting fishing boat operators from the Fraser River arrived for the northern salmon runs. But activity dropped off in September, leaving the coastline and tiny communities alone and isolated again. However, the mission boats continued to ply the waters, weather notwithstanding. “Some (trips) were bad and some were good. The Coast is notorious for southeast gales in warm weather and northeast gales in the cold weather,” he says, noting the open waters near the Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwai) could often be rough. “There were a few scary times, not so much weather-related as other kinds of incidents that occurred – like making a turn a little too soon and almost coming up on a rock, but not quite.” Scales left the water in 1984 and says the mission ended sometime around 1987, the victim of advanced technology, changes in fish processing and increasing costs. “It makes me sad in some respects, the

concentration of ownership in the fishing industry, processing in particular, and the reduction of salmon returns to the B.C. coast,” he says. Scales had been in on the design of the Thomas Crosby V and began his homage to the boat he loved 30 years ago. “Oh yes, it was a labour of love and frustration,” he laughs “Mostly it was a lot of fine work.” After the hull and upper works were shaped, Scales was challenged by the finicky work of creating the deck fittings and railings. “I didn’t do it in any sustained way, just in bits and pieces,” he says, noting Martha, his wife of 30 years, is used to him disappearing into his shop for a while. “The bulk of it was off-the-shelf material I shaped myself.” The model is 40 inches long and will have a permanent berth at the Museum of Northern British Columbia in Prince Rupert.

Worobey: Salmon Arm native discovers answers. By Chelsea Grainger OBSERVER STAFF

The question of what caused the pandemic that wiped out more than 50-million people worldwide may be finally answered, thanks to the help of a man from Salmon Arm. Dr. Michael Worobey, who is currently a professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona, has shed light on the cause of the 1918 influenza pandemic. “Ever since the great flu pandemic of 1918, it has been a mystery of where that virus came from and why it was so severe, and in particular, why it killed young adults in the prime of life,” said Worobey in a press release. By creating a molecular clock and reconstructing the molecules that gave rise to a variety of flu strains, Worobey and his team of researchers found the answer to why the 1918 H1N1 influenza A virus (IAV) wiped out millions of people aged 20 to 40. The reason sounds simple: mismatched properties. Worobey found that the age group of people who died of H1 IAV had been exposed to a different strain of the influenza during their childhood called H3N8. Their bodies developed an immunity to H3N8; however, H3N8 has different properties than IAV. Due to this mismatch of properties, the people who had built up immunity to H3N8 had no immunity base towards IAV, which eventually led to their death.

Hypothesis: Michael Worobey, professor at the University of Arizona, made a breakthrough in discovering what caused the 1918 influenza pandemic. “A person with an antibody arsenal directed against the H3 protein would not have fared well when faced with flu viruses studded with H1 protein,” said Worobey. “And we believe that that mismatch may have resulted in the heightened mortality in the age group that happened to be in their late 20s during the 1918 pandemic.” This also explains why seniors and infants, who are usually more at risk of dying from influenza, were not affected by the 1918 pandemic. Worobey discovered that they most likely had been exposed to a virus at some point that had similar proteins as the H1N1 virus; therefore, they were immune to IAV. Worobey’s research also found

that the 1918 virus did not come directly from birds but rather it was created by a virus acquiring genetic material from the bird flu. Not only does Worobey’s research help solve an ancient mystery, it can be applied to seasonal flu mortality in present day. Worobey’s research suggests that in order to reduce mortality rates in relation to influenza, immunization should mimic protection provided by initial childhood exposure to certain influenza strains. “What we need to do now is to attempt to validate these hypotheses and determine the exact mechanisms involved, then apply that knowledge to directly better prevent people from dying from seasonal flu and future pandemic strains,” said Worobey.

Patients struggle to see doctors By Barb Brouwer OBSERVER STAFF

They may have doctors, but getting in to see them is another story. That is one of the chief findings of a recent Community Health Care Survey administered through the Shuswap North Okanagan Division of Family Practice. Designed to assess the current state of primary health care in Salmon Arm, Sorrento, Sicamous, Enderby, Armstrong, Lumby and Vernon, the suvey is a first step in A GP for Me, an initiative of Doctors of BC (formerly BC Medical Association) and the Ministry of Health. The GP for Me program was born of research that shows optimum health is achieved through a strong primary care system centred on continuous doctor-patient relationships. “The first thing

members of the family practice needed to know was how many people have their own family doctors and how long they have been with them,” says executive director Tracey Kirkman. Administered online from Feb. 1 to March 31, with more than 1,240 responding – 40 more than the target number, this “healthcare snapshot” reveals: • 86 per cent of respondents currently have a family doctor, 77 per cent for more than five years; • 98 per cent believe it’s important to have a family doctor; • 80 per cent reported their health as excellent; • 65 per cent have ongoing chronic health issues; • 37 per cent are responsible for the health and well-being of others; • Respondents are most frustrated by accessing timely appointments and wait

times; • Transportation is the third most common frustration; • Nearly 80 per cent have seen a family doctor in the last year for routine care; • Less than half accessed urgent care at emergency rooms or walk-in clinics and, • Approximately one-third have accessed alternative care such as a naturopath or nurse practitioner. Kirkman says the next step is to support local communities that have existing recruitment initiatives underway and to explore new recruitment opportunities for the whole area. “As you’ll see from survey results, the biggest frustration people have is wait times, so we will be looking at ways to help physicians be as efficient as possible and continue to support them around chronic disease management by providing continuing

medical education opportunities,” Kirkman says, noting the third goal is to look at opportunities to do some patient empowerment and education. “We really need to question how we approach the system. There are limited funds and services, yet we seem to have infinite needs and wants,” she says. With 65 per cent of respondents indicating they have chronic diseases, the practice wants to make sure the doctors are up-tospeed with the latest education. In terms of public awareness and education, Kirkman says people need to be aware of when it is appropriate to go to a doctor rather than emergency. “ER is over-used,” she says. “We have to make the right choices when it comes to the health-care system, otherwise it’s not sustainable.”

It was a high-scoring weekend for a number of area residents at the BC Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s Western Canadian Championships in Kelowna on May 17. Four Salmon Arm residents and two from Sorrento spent months training in order to compete and for all of them, it paid off. For one of the competitors, Shalon Guilbault, it was her first competition and she was able to place

fifth in the figure category. “It’s been something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said, noting she was inspired by watching friends compete in past shows. Eating up to six meals a day and working out six days a week for a total of five months, paired with a sense of dedication and motivation, was what gave Guilbault the physique to place well. “It was tough,” she said. “Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Guilbault said that the most challenging aspect of her training was

giving up social activities in order to keep a strict healthy diet. “As hard as it was, as soon as I got up on stage and saw what it was all about, I felt really proud,” said Guilbault. “The biggest thing is the people you inspire along the way.” Sorrento resident Heinz Nussbaumer took first place in the grand master category and Raymond Walkerdine, from Salmon Arm, wasn’t far behind with his secondplace win. Both men qualified for provincials in June. Nussbaumer began competing

in bodybuilding in Switzerland in 1982, but the show in Kelowna was his first in Canada. “It was really, really good,” he said. “I think I did amazing.” Nussbaumer became attracted to bodybuilding when he was 12 years old and saw a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tired of being rough-housed by his older brothers, he became determined to become strong and healthy. He has since opened a gym in Switzerland and competed in 14 championships, earning seven first-place wins.

Since the very beginning, Nussbaumer has constantly incorporated working out and healthy eating into his lifestyle. He wakes up at 4 a.m. every day to work out before heading out for a long day at work, and is constantly monitoring his food intake. “It’s my life,” said Nussbaumer. “It’s a lifestyle.” Bryce Chaddock scored first place in the Junior Men Category, Brenna Nakazawa placed eighth in the figure short category, and Tiffany Roy took second in the bikini category.

Bike to Work Week Salmon Arm residents have begun pedalling to work in support of Bike to Work Week, May 26 to 30. Hosted by Shuswap Bicycle Club, the event wraps up Shuswap Bicycle Month, a campaign to promote and encourage bicycles as a major form of transportation. Celebration stations will be set up at Uptown Askew’s, the Ross Street Parking Lot and city hall until May 30 so that riders can get fuelled up. The stations will serve juice, coffee and snacks. The week concludes with a final celebration barbecue on Friday, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Ross Street stage. Local band Safeword will perform.

Female hockey Women of all skill levels are invited to experience the game of hockey as the Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association is in the process of developing a female hockey league. On May 29, SAMHA will be hosting a meeting for those interested in joining bantam/midget teams. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at Enderby’s Howard Johnson Inn. Dressage The Southern Interior Dressage Association hosts its annual Spring Fling Dressage show on May 31 and June 1 in Salmon Arm. Shamrocks test Venom The Kamloops Venom ambushed the Armstrong Shamrocks 14-8 in Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League action Friday night at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm. Shamrocks’ assistant coach Jeff Hanley hopes for more games in Salmon Arm. “We definitely will be back. The people treated us great and we had a bunch of fans come out,” said Hanley. “It was pretty cool to see the turnout. It’s nice to know that people still like to come out to games,” said Shamrocks’ assistant captain Drew Hassard. Hassard was a member of the Shuswap Midget Outlaws along with current Rock Keith Minnis. The Rocks called up four players from the Outlaws Friday night. The Shamrocks are trying to develop a pipeline for minor league players in Salmon Arm. “We don’t have as many minor league guys coming to us from that area as we used to. Hopefully these games will start to build that up,” said Hanley. Armstrong got off

to a great start in their home away from home. The nine-day layoff seemed to rejuvenate the Rocks, as they led the first-place Venom 6-5 after two periods. “We came out really great. We controlled the ball a lot, our possession time was good,” said Hanley. Sam Hanley sniped four goals for the Rocks (3-0-4), while Logan Mostat, Joel Castle, Austin Williamson and Minnis added singles. The Venom (6-0-0) were led by Brady Jorgensen’s five goals and two assists. He recorded three in Kamloops’ nine-goal third period. “We fell apart halfway through the second. Our legs gave out and we didn’t win any battles to loose balls or grab any rebounds. Kamloops was able to take advantage of that,” said Logan. The Venom edged the Shamrocks 8-7 on April 25 in Armstrong. “I think we played better last night than we did the first time we played them. Despite the score, the game was a lot tighter,” said Hanley. “It was good to see that we are competitive with the top team

in the league.” The Shamrocks’ leading scorer Cam Nelson, was held in check most of the

night. The captain was quiet with two assists, while Mostat and Brody Berg also added a pair of helpers.

Salmon Arm rules Spalding Graduating Class Of 2014 The 2014 Spalding Cup Tournament held at the Salmon Arm Golf Club on May 24 and 25 saw many Salmon Arm golfers place well. Cody Bell and Jesse Cook were the overall champions as they placed first in the championship flight. The championship flight runners-up were Jeremy Osborne and Chris Harrington at third, Mark Kohlen and Warren Inskip at fourth, and Gary Ritchie and Jay Gullekson in fifth. Peter Pan

he notion of never having to grow up is particularly poignant for high school students as they prepare to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. Salmon Arm Secondary Grade 11-12 acting students have been given a reprieve of sorts in Neverland. For the past three months, the students have been rehearsing their roles in Peter Pan, which will run June 3 to 7 in the SAS theatre. “I wanted to have a show that would excite the students; something they were familiar with and something that would inspire them to work to their full potential,” says drama teacher Danielle Berger. “The classroom literally erupted, when I finally told them. Their reaction exceeded my expectations.” Berger, who believes in the power of performing arts, says of equal importance to her is that the theatre is a safe place, a judgment-free zone. “I have to lock the doors to keep them out,” she says laughing. “But we still get in,” giggles Tinkerbell (Grade 11 student Annick Smith). I would never leave the theatre if I didn’t have to.” Nathan Zwicker, who plays Peter to Ami Owens’ Wendy, and Kyle Laitinen, who has taken on the role of Wendy’s brother John Darling, nod their heads and chatter their agreement. “It’s obvious there’s a positive energy,” Berger says, smiling at the four students. “They’re amazing, their enthusiasm is ridiculous and their talent is amazing.” Zwicker has already taken his talent beyond the school, appearing recently in Shuswap Theatre’s The Com-

Neverland: Salmon Arm Secondary acting students, Nathan Zwicker, Ami Owens, Kyle Laitinen, Brendan Stewart, Alana Wenger and Annick Smith rehearse a scene from their production of Peter Pan. plete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and winning Best Youth Performance at the Okanagan Zone Festival. “We get the positive energy from Mrs. Berger, she has the ego of a performer and she inspires us,” he says. “We all love Ms. Berger, adds Smith. “l don’t think there’s another teacher I would do all this for.” Zwicker, who thrives on the rush of performance, was thrilled with Berger’s choice and his starring role. “Peter Pan is attractive because you really don’t have to be a grown up,” he says. “Having the theme of childhood as we graduate, it’s a nice feeling to end the year on that note.” Zwicker nods his head enthusiastically when asked if he will fly, but Berger looks nervous.

“We just worked out how he flies,” she says. “But we like to call it suspended – just above the ground.” Zwicker will take a year off before heading to theatre school with dreams a career on-stage and eventually in film. Also pursuing a degree in the performing arts, Owens says the stage is where she is truly in her element. “It’s good to take a break from your own self, putting yourself into another personality.” Her family has moved around a lot and school theatres have provided a safe and welcoming place. Blushing from both parties aside, Owens says being Zwicker’s girlfriend has helped her play Wendy. “It definitely makes it easier to have the chemistry,” she says shyly. “It’s easier to ignore her,” Zwicker

laughs of Peter’s attitude in the play. “The only kicker is, I only get to kiss her on the cheek.” Well-suited to her role, the bubbly Smith says her nickname throughout her life has been Tinkerbell. “I was so excited, it’s such a fun play,” she says. “You put all your emotions into the show. It’s truly a break from everything that may be going on in your life…” The Grade 11 is also saying goodbye to SAS, heeding to an arts high school in Edmonton in September. “All my friends are graduating and I get to go on to bigger things too,” she says. “Some of my best friends are here.” Also in Grade 11, Laitinen says he will definitely be returning to the school theatre next year. Very shy and knowing nobody when he began high school, Laitinen says the theatre program has improved his self-confidence. “I was alone and then I decided to join drama and the after-school musical theatre…,” he says “It’s given me a place to be myself, to belong, to not be judged.” Laitinen says he will probably stay in Salmon Arm after graduation, eventually taking over the family farm. But the young trombone player says he may feed his interest in performing by getting involved with local theatre. Before they move on, the students in Berger’s class will remain in Neverland for a while longer. Peter Pan Begins June 3 and plays nightly to Saturday, June 7 at 6:30 with a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m.

Ross Street stage to get tile-over By Barb Brouwer OBSERVER STAFF

Fish swim in the fountain, but birds, bees, flowers and more will decorate the wall of the Ross Street Plaza stage. Salmon Arm Secondary art teacher Chris Schielke’s Grade 11 and 12 art students will be creating a colourful tile mosaic that will depict the four seasons of the Shuswap. This is a continuation of a public art program that began in 2006, when children ages six to 16 made mosaic fish that were installed in the Ross Street Fountain. Vancouver artist Glen Anderson is coming back to lead this latest project and has told art gallery curator ,Tracy Kutschker that he will be donating some tiles as well. “He ran training workshops several years ago to help us with the pebble tile mosaic in the Ross Street Fountain,” she says. “This one is a landscape that uses the City of Salmon Arm logo as a jumping off point and shows seasonal indicators like birds, flowers and fish in the Shuswap.”

CONCERT– Local 15-year-old pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko will present an hourlong program of classical masterpieces assisted by his 12-year-old sister Aria at 7 p.m. at First United Church in order to raise funds for his trip to the final round of the Canada Music Competition in Quebec City. Admission is by donation.

Funding for this project came from Shuswap Rotary, the Salmar Association and private donations, says Kutschker. The original design idea was provided by Cathy Stubington, whose Calendario project promotes using agricultural indicators rather than the regular calendar to define the seasons in the Shuswap. As part of the fee-for-service agreement with the City of Salmon Arm, the Arts Council must spend between $2,000 to $5,000 every year on public art projects – either temporary or permanent. Kutschker will outline the basic design in chalk and each student will be given an easily identifiable section so they can show them off to family and friends. The original fountain project was successful, as was the broken tile installation that took place about a year later in Fletcher Park. Kutschker expects the results of the latest project to be spectacular. The length of time between the installations is not a concern to Kutschker. “It has to be the right place, right people, right time,” she says, noting there are many factors involved in the long-term project that will feature the beautiful Shuswap in colourful mosaic tiles.

Quartet headlines jazz club New York-based drummer, composer and band leader, Curtis Nowosad is on tour to promote his new CD, The Skeptic & the Cynic, and is making a stop in Salmon Arm. The Curtis Nowosad Quartet will be featured in tomorrow night’s Jazz Club performance at Shuswap Chefs. Nowosad has developed a reputation as a highly-skilled, versatile, and forward-thinking musician. A native of Winnipeg, Man., Nowosad became recognized there as the face of the

new generation of jazz players, and his quartet is one of the best in Canada, featuring two internationallyrecognized New York ex-pats, Steve Kirby on bass, and Derrick Gardner on trumpet, along with virtuoso pianist Will Bonness. The quartet is featured alongside tenor saxophonist Jimmy Greene, pianist Taylor Eigsti, and other special guests on The Skeptic & the Cynic, a collection of instrumental jazz covers of songs by popular artists such as Michael

Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Black Star. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the banquet room of Shuswap Chefs. Admission is by donation and organizers remind jazz fans that donations at the door are the major source of funding for the club. The Jazz Club does not receive grants or assistance from anywhere else. Safeword, featuring Chad Makela, Jordan Dick, Gareth Seys, Blair Shier and Devon Leyenhorst, will perform Thursday, June 5.

Veterans of the industry and commanders of their sound, Bill Kirchen and Paul Pigat are two masters of the guitar whose musical styles span the roots music spectrum. Each performing solo at the 2014 Roots & Blues Festival, the two are also scheduled to come together in a workshop, melding sounds that range from rockabilly to blues to honky-tonk and everything in between. Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step onto any stage, play some trademark licks and elicit instant recognition. His career spans 40 years and includes recording with a long list of luminaries. Named ‘a titan of the telecaster’ by Guitar Player Magazine, Kirchen offers his audience a rare combination of guitar virtuosity, mastery of roots rock ’n’ roll, and an almost magical connection with his audience. Kirchen may be best known for his work in the ’70s with the rebel band Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. ARMSTRONG, KEITH MURRAY Sept. 27, 1932 – May 20, 2014 Keith was born in Vancouver, BC on September 27, 1932 and passed away at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, BC on May 20, 2014 at the age of 81 years. He leaves his loving wife of 56 years Joanne, sons Greg (Judy), Brad (Christine) and Mark (Joanne), sister Dorothy (Frank) Richardson, brother Doug (Pauline), grandsons Kent, Drew, Dustin, Kit and Christopher Armstrong. Keith worked for the Bank of Montreal for 19 years and then worked for a development company for a number of years in Victoria. He finished his career at the Enderby and District Credit Union as the General Manager. Keith, affectionately known as “Winks”, loved sports and followed closely all his son’s and grandson’s activities. Keith will be remembered by all for his kindness and generosity and wonderful sense of humour. There will be no services as per Keith’s wishes. Ines was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Win McCall. She will be missed by her brother, Mario, daughter Anne (Clint), son Bob (Lisa), grandchildren Lindsay (Derek), Warren (Cristal), Joel (Laura), Jody, and great grandchildren Tristan, Camryn, Nisa, and Zoe. Ines was born in a log cabin on her parent’s farm on what is now the Ajax Mine Property, south of Kamloops. She and husband Win operated McCall’s Grocery, a corner grocery store in Kamloops until they moved to Salmon Arm to open the Super Value. Many of Ines’ fondest memories were of the summers she spent at their cabin on the Shuswap Lake, golfing with husband Win, and of the time they operated a small farm in Sorrento. Ines & Win spent many winters in California and Arizona escaping the cold. Ines loved gardening and spent many happy hours cultivating both her flowers and vegetables. Ines requested that no service be held. The family will gather at a later time to celebrate her life. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at Piccadilly Care Center that helped Ines in her later years. He was born in Vancouver on July 4, 1934 and was predeceased by his parents Grace Hornosty and Robert McClelland. He is survived by his loving wife Lila of 54 years, son Bobby (Reg) McClelland, son Wayne (Lisa) McClelland, granddaughter Kirsten McClelland, great granddaughter Khyra McClelland, brother Aaron (Terry) McClelland and family, brother and sister-in-law Fred (Kathy) Schuhart and family, daughter Susan (Gord) Moscrip and family, son Terry Hilton and family as well as other relatives, dear friends and his faithful furry friend, Classy. He will be remembered for his many years of hard work in the printing industry, having his own print shop “Noel’s Printing”, and his dedication to the peoples around the world at Christmastime. In 2000 retiring to the Shuswap, he continued spreading his Christmas cheer selflessly until his failing health would not allow him to continue. His many other interests included fishing, hunting, boating, camping and spending time on his ham radio. He will be greatly missed; leaving a legacy behind that will have an impact on many. WALTERS, ERIC HUBERT Eric Hubert Walters, born April 30th, 1932 in Llandeilo, Wales passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday May 18, 2014 at Mt. Ida Mews. Eric is predeceased by his, wife, Martha “Mati” (2007) and two of his sons David (2003) and Richard (2009). He is survived by his sons Glyn (Meghan), Gwilym (Tara) and Alun, and by five grandchildren, Ethan, Gavin, Laurel, Mati and Alice. Eric graduated from the University of Wales in Aberystwyth in 1954. He began his teaching career in England where he met his future wife Mati. Together they immigrated to Canada and married upon arrival in Vancouver in December of 1958. After teaching stops in Prince Rupert, Port Alberni and one year back in Epping England, Eric and Mati settled in Salmon Arm in the fall of 1964 where they started their family and Eric began teaching at Salmon Arm Senior Secondary in Mathematics and Physics. After obtaining his Masters Degree he began his career in education administration as the Vice Principal at Eagle River Secondary in Sicamous and was later promoted to Principal. Eric stayed at Eagle River until 1984 at which point he moved to the School District #83 Office as first District Principal and then as Director of Student Support Services. Eric stayed on at the School District until 1989 at which point he moved on to teaching Mathematics at the Okanagan College campuses in Salmon Arm and Vernon. Eric retired from his teaching career in 1994. Growing up in Wales Eric was active in sports including cricket and his much loved rugby. He instilled his love of sports in his five sons. Their backyard in Salmon Arm, known as “The Patch” in winter months was often the sight of epic soccer, football, rugby, baseball and hockey games where Eric was frequently in the thick of things. The dedication Eric showed to his family and teaching career carried over onto the soccer pitch. He was instrumental in the development of Salmon Arm Minor Soccer, as well as the organization of the Shuswap Men’s Soccer League and the long running August Long Weekend Soccer Tournament. His sons carried on his love of sport and also became actively involved in the participation and organization of soccer in Salmon Arm. Eric was honored in 2011 as a local sports hero by Sport BC and just recently there was an announcement that one of the soccer fields in Salmon Arm will be named “Walters Field”. Eric Walters was dedicated to his students, community and most of all his family. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on June 14, 2014 at 1:00pm at the 5th Avenue Seniors’ Centre (170 5th Ave, SE, Salmon Arm, BC). Cecily Stainsby (nee White) passed peacefully on Wednesday morning, May 21, 2014 at the Hillside Village residence with her family by her side. Cec was born the third youngest of thirteen children on September 24, 1925 at Exeter, NSW, Australia. She is survived by one sister, Hester, of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. Cec leaves behind her children, Ken, Brian, Susan and Hugh and her grandchildren, Shannon, Christopher, Drew, Scott, Hunter, Tovah and Paul. All will miss her very much but are sustained by the strength, good humour and dignity by which she lived her life to the end. Although Cec lived in Canada since the fifties, part of her heart was always in Australia. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hillside Village and Dr. Chris Weicker who cared for Cec with such love.
