The extremely popular night market idea is coming to Surrey. Based on a trendy weekend market in Richmond that attracts thousands of people from May through October, organizers are looking to bring the concept to this city. Surrey’s version launches in the summer and will be an open-air market for residents buying and selling a variety of local foods, services and goods. It’s planned as a multicultural, family-friendly event for people throughout the region. It’s also expected the market, which will set up shop at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, will showcase a variety of talent and performing arts. Organizers are expecting the Surrey Night Market to draw between 5,000 and 8,000 people a night. They also want to have more than 70 food vendors representing a sample of world cuisine, plus 30 or

Cloverdale singer seeks votes in talent contest

By Jennifer Lang A young Cloverdale singer with a big voice is looking for support so she can make it to the next round in a talent competition. Madison Bell, 12, is one of the competitors in the 5th annual Valley Voices Vocal Competition. The Grade 6 A.J. McLellan student is one of 25 qualifying performers who are hoping to advance to the next round as one of 15 semi-finalists. Along with live auditions and performances to advance to the next round, this year’s contestants also need to garner votes online for their performance videos. Bell’s a capella entry is one of 25 videos going “live” on the Valley Voices Facebook page Friday morning. Voting is open from May 30 to June 2. The finals are at the AgriFair in Abbotsford in August. The judges are a combination

If Jakob falls during the event, as he does with the status seizures, the dog will roll him on his side so he doesn’t choke on his tongue. Then the dog runs for help.

The canines are trained at a facility called 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia, Ohio. The financial commitment for the Chambers is $14,000, a sum the family can’t easily put together. The family’s church is reaching out to help Jakob. On Sunday, June 22 at 7 p.m., WestWinds Community Church is holding a fundraiser at 6331 176 St. It will include silent

at large. You might ask what we do for our veterans and their families. We have an excellent Service Officer, who is also our Sick and Visiting Officer. He donates many hours providing veterans and their families with information and assistance for referrals to the appropriate offices of Veterans Affairs to ensure that their concerns are dealt with. For example, a World War II veteran or spouse may require home assistance, help with pensions, or medical aid and equipment. Many hospital visits are made to our veterans,

and they receive home visits after being in hospital to assist with referrals for home care. The Poppy Fund will assist if a veteran qualifies for emergency help, food or clothing. We support many community youth groups such as cadets, scouts, guides, and schools. We have worked closely with the Surrey Museum on Remembrance Day. Our Colour Party is active at many of the major events in Surrey, and participate in Canada Day, parades, and celebrations of life for deceased veterans. We welcome new members. All Canadian citizens or Commonwealth subjects are welcome to become members. By becoming a member and participating you will have the opportunity to receive benefits like member discounts. Flip the switch

They’re working it

e have all had those days. You know the ones where we wake up and stub our toe getting out of bed. We proceed to use bodywash in our hair instead of conditioner. Then we spill our coffee on our freshly pressed shirt. Well, actually I don’t drink coffee and I definitely don’t iron my shirts, but you get the idea. Some days start off poorly and before we know it we are enduring a terrible day. Everything goes wrong – one thing after the other – and it seems out of our control. We just chalk it up to a bad day. Does it have to be this way though? Not really. How we react to situations is our choice. This may be a hard pill to swallow, but it is true. When we stub our toe, we choose either to freak out or to laugh it off. Think of how differently the day would flow, if we didn’t pour our energy into getting angry at ourselves for silly things like that. We would find that we start the day off laughing for one thing. Seeing the humour in situations really helps to diffuse tension and negativity. In the grand scheme

I sometimes think this is a sort of cosmic joke. So how can we flip the switch in these sorts of situations that are not our own doing? Perspective is the key. Realize that by hitting every red light you are being reminded to drive carefully. Maybe you speed too much and need to learn to slow down. Perhaps you are sweating because you are taking a situation too seriously. You could learn to lighten up a bit. It is always possible to flip the switch. The key is to flip it the first

Pain. What a terrible 4-letter word. However, living pain-free may be more within reach than you think. Without trivializing it too much, pain is a perceived sensation with many potential causes. It is a subjective feeling triggered in the nervous system by a physical stimulus such as a blunt or shearing force, a chemical, a poke, a pinch, etc. So, we can feel “pain” when we get a trivial paper cut or, more seriously, suffer a car accident, shingles outbreak, pinched nerve, severed limb, etc. In a way, it is an evil game of “telephone” between the trigger site and your brain. Imagine if we can somehow interrupt this telephone game; the message would be lost and you will not have that sensation of pain anymore. Sound too good to be true? Read on! First, we would need to find some kind of substance or medication that can interrupt this painful message and, literally, act as a “pain block”. There are many options that are available over-the-counter (OTC) at CLOVERDALE PHARMASAVE without a prescription, including (but not limited to) Traumeel gel or ointment, MSM Cream, Zeel Ointment, Dynamint, Chapman’s Liniment, Arnica Tincture, DMSO Gel or Lotion, or even Rub A535. Rodeo ropes in the crowds By Jennifer Lang Sunny skies, warm weather and lively crowds helped make this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair a memorable one. “We were fortunate to have fantastic weather that brought out excited crowds throughout the entire long weekend,” said Shannon Claypool, president of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. “We were especially thrilled with enthusiastic rodeo crowds that nearly sold out every performance, with two back-to-back sellouts for Sunday and Monday’s events.” More than 86,000 people attended the 126th Country Fair over the long weekend, and 21,000 spectators took in the five rodeo performances held during the four-day event, May 16 to 19 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. The Cloverdale Rodeo is a professional, invitational rodeo that draws North America’s top cowboys and cowgirls to compete for

$328,000 in prize money. Caleb Bennet of Morgan, Utah, earned the champion title in bareback riding, with a score of 91.5. Heflin, Louisiana’s Cody DeMoss dominated the saddle bronc competition, winning $20,000 in the finals, and earning another trophy for his growing collection. Utah’s Kelli Tolbert took the Ladies Barrel Racing title, riding her sorel mare Cleo to victory in just 16.102. She’s earned $21,400 and the title of 2014 Cloverdale Rodeo Champion. Chris Roundy from Spanish Fork, Utah, is the 2014 Cloverdale Rodeo Bull Riding Champion, with a score of 90.5. Surrey’s own House of Q won the top barbecue prize at the Third Annual Cowboy Cookoff – and earned the grand champion title in a competition that drew 25 teams vying for $10,000 in prize money. House of Q also took top honours for Pull Pork.

Cloverdale’s heritage charm is a conference draw

By Jennifer Lang A walking tour of Cloverdale, a bus trip to Surrey’s Historic Stewart Farm and Crescent Beach, a book fair and a visit by B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor are sure to be be highlights when the B.C. Historical Federation’s 2014 conference gets underway next week. With its small-town ambience and heritage charm, Cloverdale is an obvious choice for hosting an event like this one, lead organizer Barbara Hynek told The Reporter. The conference, open to anyone with an interest in history, runs June 6 and 7 at the Surrey Museum and other local venues. A ride on the heritage Interurban railway out of Cloverdale Station is just one of the excursions awaiting delegates, who are converging from across B.C.

Most of the conference seats have been snapped up, but the public is encouraged to drop by the book fair or tag along on the bus tour. The book fair on Saturday, June 7 (noon4 p.m.), is presented by the B.C. Genealogical Society at the Surrey Museum. Authors of B.C history will be on hand, providing an opportunity for the public to meet the authors. The B.C. Genealogy Society will have special materials available, which should help lure genealogy buffs, Hynek said. “There are pamphlets that have been designed for beginners who are just starting their research. A lot of our members are interested

on personal levels.” As a former librarian, Hynek can attest to the enduring interest in researching family

roots and connections. Records are increasingly moving online, bringing them within easy reach of anyone with a WiFi connection. “In the old days it was so cumbersome.” Cloverdale’s heritage as a transportation hub, its evolution from bustling city centre to the historic heart of Surrey with many original buildings intact, help make it unique – as does its impressive, present day heritage attractions, from the Surrey Museum to the Interurban, operating

Judith Guichon will be awarding this year’s recipients of the federation’s awards for historical writing. The Friday evening reception at the Surrey Museum is the conference’s main event. To be eligible, a book must be about an aspect of B.C. history, and published in the 2013 calendar year. Past winners of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing include Derek Hayes for British Columbia: a New Historical Atlas (2012) and the late Chuck Davis,

The awards include prizes for books, best historical society newsletter, historical article, and best website devoted to B.C. history – an honour bestowed upon Surrey’s Jack Brown in 2013 for Wsurreyhistory.ca. With temperatures rising across the province, the BC SPCA urges people to protect their pets against the dangers of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Even well-meaning guardians leave their dogs unattended in parked cars while they run errands. Tragically, this can lead to serious heatstroke and even death for their pets. The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill a pet. In just minutes, the temperature in a parked car can climb to well over 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). Dogs have no sweat glands, so they cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the hot air and upholstery in a vehicle can make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Dogs can withstand high temperatures for only a very short time – often just 10 minutes - before suffering irreparable brain damage or death.

Pet guardians should be alert to heatstroke symptoms, which include: exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting), rapid or erratic pulse, salivation, anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremors, lack of coordination, convulsions or vomiting, and collapse. If your dog shows symptomas of heatstroke, you should do the following: • Immediately move the animal to a cool, shady place • Wet the dog with cool water • Fan vigorously to promote evaporation. This will cool the blood, which reduces the animal’s core temperature.

• Do not apply ice. This constricts blood flow, which will inhibit cooling. • Allow the dog to drink some cool water (or to lick ice cream if no water is available) • Take the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment. If you’re used to letting your dog accompany you on errands, you might feel guilty leaving him behind on hot summer days. But your dog will be much happier – and safer --at home, with shade and plenty of fresh cool water.

y children are adults now, but one summer I enrolled both girls in a Surrey Museum Day Camp. For a week Helene and Hilary, armed with picnic lunches, rode their bikes to the old Surrey Museum on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds to join a group led by two guides who explored the living history of the area. It was a childhood memory neither girls forgot. The program came to mind

ever and God Save the King. To our surprise, some of us could actually remember the words. Squeezing in to desks without whacking aging knees proved challenging, as did extricating them an hour later. Unsympathetic, Miss Polillo brooked no

nonsense. Beginning with a hand inspection, I was instructed to trim up my nails, and another ’student’ – sporting red nail polish – earned the admonition; “What WAS your mother thinking?!” Remember window monitor? The important ‘helper’ tasked with

operating the windows with the long pole with the hook on the end? A minor infringement earned someone a trip to the dunce’s chair, complete with pointed cap, and neat chalk printing on those little slates isn’t as easy as it looks. The school was built in 1924 – when the

dreaded strap and cane were still the accepted modes of discipline. Needless to say, one ‘young lad’ got his comeupins for talking out of turn in class. Reading aloud, reciting our multiplication tables, and surveying memory texts left me reflecting that Google may be handy, but surely memorizing poetry and prose has to be healthier mental exercise. Let me clarify here, that I wasn’t around in the 1920s, but I did seat my way through an era that required reciting Keats, Wordsworth, and even Burns by memory, not to mention declining Latin verbs. It killed the ancient Romans, but to my amazement it didn’t kill me. As a journalist it even proved useful. Eventually, some teacher’s pet cleaned the backboard and clapped the brushes, Miss Polillo lowered the flag, let us out, and dispatched us homeward. It was the kind of experience that my girls would have loved, as
