“I stand before you kind of half broken at this time,” Clara Hughes admitted to an audience of about 90 at the Lower Kootenay Band (LKB) gymnasium on Monday evening. Hughes, who won six Olympic medals in speed skating and cycling, stopped in Creston as part of 110-day bike circle tour that started in Eastern Canada and took her through Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon before turning south to Vancouver last week. She is sponsored by Bell Canada in Clara’s Big Ride in support of mental health. “I’m here to share a little about my life,” Hughes said. “I have gone through mental illness in my lifetime. It came to me in the form of depression.” She said the stigma surrounding mental illness prevented her from seeking help when she struggled with depression after winning two bronze medals at the Summer Olympics in 1996. “I thought I had to fix myself,” she said.

From page 1 In 2005, the 42-yearold was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, an incurable and rare genetic juvenile form of macular degeneration, affecting central fine vision. He’s enjoyed golfing for over 30 years, and was determined to continue playing as his vision worsened. About 60 players took part in each tournament, and Douma was one of five Canadians. Three of the Canadians brought their own sight coaches — to assist with travel and game play — but Douma and a Vancouver player requested Australian sight coaches. Douma said his ended up acting more as a caddy, carrying his clubs and fixing divots, than simply helping him line up shots. “They were awesome ambassadors for their country,” he said. Despite the assistance, playing on the unfamiliar course wasn’t without frustration. “My motto is, ‘You stray, you pay,” and I strayed a lot,” Douma said. Although he felt ready to give up during each round, he shook the feeling off after the eighth or ninth hole. “You can only control what you’re doing,” he said. The competitions in Australia have only whet Douma’s appetite for more, and with his second-place ranking, he should be able to attend the world championships in Japan in 2016. But before that, the Creston Golf Club will host the Canadian championships from July 7-12, 2015. And in August, Douma will visit Truro, N.S., for this year ’s Canadian Blind Golf open tournament. While he’s extremely grateful for the community’s support for this year ’s trips — both from private donations and a dinner-dance fundraiser — he hopes to find a sponsor to help him continue in these worldclass tournaments. “I don’t want to rely on the community to that extent, but they got the ball rolling,” he said. “It was an amazing experience.”

With the publication of Kootenay Cameos: Tales of the West Kootenays, Creston artist Bruce Paterson has fulfilled a dream of putting some of his favourite sketches of historical scenes and buildings in the Kootenays into book form. “I’ve always wanted to do this,” he said. “Now the times and technology have changed and it is much easier to reproduce them in good quality.” Kootenay Cameos, a newspaper feature that included a sketch and article, appeared in the now-defunct Kootenay Review from 1987-1995. Paterson produced a total of 84 articles, a quarter of which are included in his book. “It wasn’t easy to make the selections,” he said. “But I wanted to include at least one story from each community in the West Kootenays. I have updated a
few of the articles, but mostly they are the same as originally published in the Review. I tried to leave the stories as I saw them in those days. They are a snapshot of the time.” Paterson said that when he started out on the series he expected to struggle for ideas, but the opposite turned out to be the case. “I barely scratched the surface,” he said. “There was always a story behind each building and I met people with wonderful stories. There is a lot of passion in these buildings, and so much tragedy in a lot of them.” Kootenay Cameos opens with a short biography of Paterson, who was born in England and moved to Canada at age nine. He first visited the Slocan Valley and Kootenay Lake in 1970 and vowed to return. It took him 10 years, but he and his wife, Pat, moved to Crawford Bay where he taught school for eight
years. They later relocated to Creston, where he taught at Prince Charles Secondary School for another 16 years. Describing himself as leading a “Jekyll-and-Hyde type of existence”, as an artist he also produced more than 330 editorial cartoons for the Advance in the 1990s and has also delved into comic art, oil painting, graphics and fantasy ceramic sculptures. The Creston area is well represented in Kootenay Cameos, with stories about the Midgley murder mystery, Jordan’s Cabin, Kootenay Landing, the Constable barn in Alice Siding, the fruit growing industry and the Town of Creston, which is accompanied by what may well be the most beautiful depiction of Creston’s grain elevators every produced. Kootenay Cameos is being sold at bookstores and outlets throughout the Kootenays, including Kingfisher Used Books in Creston.

RCMP calls include suspicious, stolen vehicles
Please be advised that the RDCK is conducting an on-going Waste Screening Program at the Creston Resource Recovery Facility. The objective of this process is to educate the public about what is accepted for disposal at the site and to encourage recycling and waste diversion. All loads and household garbage bags will be inspected as part of the waste screening process. The death appears to be of natural causes. May 20 •Police received a report that a pellet gun was used to break a patio door window and screen. •Illegal liquor was seized at the Kootenanny music festival on Highway 3A. •A 22nd Avenue North resident complained that a suspicious vehi-
cle was driving past the house in a possible continuation of harassment from earlier in the year. •A breach of a no-contact order was reported from Crawford Bay. •An intoxicated, unwelcome male guest was reported at an Elm Street residence. From page 1 Hughes grew up with mental illness in her family. Her sister was bipolar and struggled with addictions and her father was an alcoholic and had undiagnosed mental illness. She herself took to drinking alcohol in Winnipeg at the age of 13. “That changed when I saw my first Olympics,” she said. But after winning a pair of medals in 1996 she plunged into a lengthy depression and stopped bike racing in an effort to get better. “Two years later, I finally accepted help and I began to heal,” she said. With Hughes still on Highway 3A after a day of battling weather conditions, the audience heard presentations from LKB Chief Jason Louie, Dr. Randy Grahn, Barb Basil, Angie Louie and Anne Jimmie after an opening welcome by Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. Chief Louie admitted to being a sufferer of mental illness, having experienced bouts of overwhelming depression since childhood. His struggles were heightened when as a member of the Canadian Army he arrived in a country he left unnamed. Buildings were burning, people were screaming and the air was filled with the smell of burning flesh and the sound of gunfire, he recalled. Eventually he found himself lying in a fetal position, unable to cope with what he was experiencing. He was later diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, an affliction that makes it difficult to sleep, to be in crowds and to cope with stress. Louie said that when he was elected chief, he thought he would get support from a community that would understand his challenges. “Unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” he said. Angie Louie, a Ktnuxa-Kinbasket Child and Family Services wellness educator, spoke at length about her own experiences as the daughter of a woman who had been taken away to a residential school. She told of her commitment to learning more about the effects of such displacement on the children, their adulthood and, later, their offspring. Band councillor Anne Jimmie was the final speaker before Hughes’ arrival. She told her powerful story of being a student in a residential school. “Sixty-one years ago I left home to go to residential school to learn how to read and write, my grandfather told me,” she said. “Nobody told me that I would not be going home at the end of the day.” She would go on to spend eight years at the school, where she said she learned to lie because telling the truth inevitably led to punishment. “You feel like you are losing your mind,” Jimmie said. “You are alone, even though you share a dorm with 15 or 20 other girls. “In 2003 I fell apart. I thought of suicide. But I decided to give myself a chance and I

celled on Monday, apparently with Hughes’s support team reducing her exhausting schedule to help her conserve energy. She plans to arrive in Ottawa on Canada Day. Hughes has attended 180 community events during the 74 days of her ride to this point. She was scheduled to make an appearance at Prince Charles Secondary School on Tuesday morning before cycling on to Cranbrook.

Facing the challenge head-on
I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by emotion as I sat in the Lower Kootenay Band gymnasium on Monday night, a bowl emptied of the delicious moose stew and frybread I had just downed sitting on the table in front of me. Speaker after speaker addressed issues that arise from mental illness, of struggles that arise not only from illness but from the stigma that makes it difficult to acknowledge one’s own need for help. And I learned a little more, as I inevitably do when I attend an event in Lower Kootenay, about why I have such admiration for many people in that tiny community. We, nearly a hundred of us, had gathered to welcome Olympic athlete Clara Hughes to the Creston Valley, yet another stop on her epic journey around Canada to help shine a light on the need to create a public discussion about mental illness. If what I heard and learned on that evening was any indication, she can already count her efforts as a success. Over the years I have learned about Chief Jason Louie’s struggles with depression, the symptoms of which began in his childhood. And he has told me personally about his experiences in the Canadian Army that led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, an illness that plagues him in many, varied and often unexpected ways. But to hear his story in one sitting, and to put into context with messages from his wife, Angie, local mental health professional Dr. Randy Grahn, LKB councillor Anne Jimmie and others packed a powerful punch. During Jason’s years as leader in his community, I have been bewildered by the cruel treatment he and his immediate family have been subjected to, by people with unclear motives. At every LKB event I attend, I look around and make note of people who aren’t there — otherwise good and decent people who
shun their elected chief and his family at all costs. What they hope to gain is beyond my understanding. Angie Louie, in her role as Ktunaxa-Kinbasket Child and

Family Services wellness educator, has spent years working with First Nations people in her efforts to raise awareness about mental health and wellness issues. She is well educated on the subject and passionate on the subject. But to hear of her own experiences was especially powerful. Angie said her mother, an angry and violent woman, often took out her frustrations on her children. When asked, she would not talk at all about whether she had even been in a residential school. Not surprisingly, as a young mother, Angie found herself repeating her mother’s behaviour, hitting her own child in anger. But she faced her own deficiencies, determined to break the cycle. “I wanted to be better,” she said. In her talk, Angie, spoke of her attempt to create a simple definition for what is becoming commonly known as residential school syndrome. The symptoms, she said, often mirror those of post-traumatic stress disorder but PTSD typically comes from a short-lived trauma. Years and years of life in residential schools meant the problems multiplied, and her list of 20 questions that ask about RSS symptoms is a brilliant synopsis. I have asked her share her presentation with the Advance and we will post it on our website when we receive it. Of the many LKB residents I
admire, none stand above Anne Jimmie. Short in stature, Jimmie stands tall in her efforts to leave behind her a better community. She is articulate and passionate, and her soft voice only serves to encourage one to listen intently when she speaks. My skin tingled with shivers when Anne talked about being sent off to a residential school at the age of five, having no idea that she wouldn’t be coming home at the end of each day. In the eight formative years that followed, she says she learned to lie because “I would get punished for telling the truth.” But, she added, she would also get punished for lying. It’s hard to imagine what those years did to a little girl who wanted nothing more than to learn to read the newspaper she used to see on her grandfather’s table. “I hated myself, hated being native. I hated my grandfather for what he told me,” she said. And I wanted to cry. To deaden the pain, she started drinking alcohol at age 12. She didn’t stop for more than three decades. As I drove home that Monday evening, it wasn’t the sadness of the experiences I had just heard that overwhelmed me. It was the indomitable human spirit that drives people like Jason, Angie and Anne to leave the world a better place than the one they were born into. There is a remarkable and, to me, inexplicable, lack of bitterness in their messages. They acknowledge their pain but they don’t point fingers and lay blame. Their determination to understand their own situations, to face them head on, and to work to help themselves so they can help others is astonishing. Canadian election fraud is challenging but possible To the Editor: As a possible explanation for Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s pretensions of some kind of new Napoleon march on Moscow, it has been pointed out that there are over a million Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, primarily of the western Ukraine anti-Russian persuasion. Politicians are wont to put power over principle and as 2015 draws near, efforts at election fraud impunity may not be adequate. Fortunately, with recountable paper ballots and, as yet, a lack of vote rigging machines, stacking the deck is still a challenge for the political power hungry. So far, the “opposition” parties have not shown much nasal sensitivity to the necrotic war odour and oligarchic powers that dominate the mean and sleazy media, but if Canadians were actually to vote in numbers like the people in Crimea or eastern Ukraine, even if resorting to spoiled ballots for lack of independent candidates, it would send a message to the privation-wealth-concentration regressive political forces. Those citizens actually concerned about Canada’s future might find some illumination in Pepe Escobar’s May 19 Asia Times article, “China Pivot Fuels Eurasian Century”. Robert Betts West Creston
Patient rejected by ‘avaricious’ dentist To the Editor: Recently I was subjected to a bizarre small-minded humiliation that could only happen in a small town. As my dentist had retired, I made an appointment at a new clinic and duly showed up for a cleaning and checkup. All went well until the battery of X-rays, which I was reluctant to take, although two were done, which the clinician felt necessary. After the teeth cleaning, the dentist came for an examination and recommended two procedures; one was a minor flaw that had happened during an extraction 40 years previous, another a polishing of a tooth cap, which my previous dentist had installed. I told my new dentist that I felt that this was not necessary, but agreed on a further check, for which I made an appointment. On my way out, paying the receptionist, she noticed that I did not have dental insurance, and deducted my bill by one-fifth. Imagine my not small amazement the next day when I received a letter

that read, in part, “It is evident that our philosophies of dental care differ too much. … We will not be accepting you as a patient. … Any future appointments … have been cancelled.” I have never had such a disrespectful experience in my life and can only deduce that in no small way, the reason was essentially that I, as a patient, was not a sufficient revenue generator for the small-minded, avaricious practitioner. As in the case in the kingdom of the blind where the one-eyed man is king, in a town where dental service is limited, it seems that a small minded, greedy practitioner can cherry-pick his patients to generate the maximum profits instead of providing so-called normally required dental care. Under normal conditions, the public health system, of which the practice of dentistry is a responsible part, exists to serve the public, and is suitably rewarded. In this case, the public, it seems, must be a cash cow at the whim of the indifferent provider. Otherwise, why bother? Larry Ewashen Creston
Edmonton visitor enjoys festival with grandkids To the Editor: I came to Creston from Edmonton, Alta., to visit my great-grandchildren (five and six years old) and their parents. It was the first time that I have attended the Creston Valley Blossom Festival and I was very pleasantly surprised. I stayed at the Mountain View Inn, which is my favourite place to stay when I am in Creston. We attended the parade on Saturday morning, which was really well put together and enjoyable for all. A lot of work had been put into it! Then, after lunch, the children had a fun time at the bouncy castles, the climbing wall and other activities. It was a fun day for all of us! On Sunday morning, I took the children to the inspiring church service at the New Life Christian Church, and on Sunday evening I attended the Blossom Valley Worship Service at the Prince Charles Theatre. The churches in the Creston Valley joined together to worship God. This was the greatest blessing of the whole weekend for me, a “taste of heaven”. The presence of God was so strong throughout the service — bringing us love, joy, peace and unity as the body, the bride of Christ Jesus. Even the speaker said that when Jesus’ church comes together, there is an added blessing and there really was! I thank God for this service and for all the people who organized it. On Monday, we attended the children’s picnic put on by the Creston Lions Club, with a special feature from the fire department, a tasty luncheon prepared by the Lions and races for the children. I am so glad that I was able to come for this well organized and enjoyable festival, and I am already making plans to come back next year. Putin wants to rebuild U.S.S.R.
To the Editor: The assessments by Anton Skerbic (“Ukraine unrest part of U.S. plan”, March 27) and Bob Ewashen (“IMF taking control of Ukraine”, April 10) appear one-dimensional, neglecting the role of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia had guaranteed the territorial integrity of Ukraine as part of the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, but Mr. Putin has now occupied and annexed Crimea, and has positioned an army of 40,000 men on Ukraine’s eastern border; these actions are Mr. Putin “taking control of Ukraine” by military force. Mr. Putin appears to wish to rebuild the U.S.S.R., with satellites, behind a new iron curtain. Mr. Ewashen also believes that the citizens of Ukraine “will pay a heavy price through economic deprivation” for trying to better integrate with Europe. This contrasts with the reality that most citizens of most of the former East Bloc countries that have integrated with the west are now much better off since the collapse of the U.S.S.R. Perhaps Anton and Bob are too young to remember “Ich bin ein Berliner” or the Berlin wall? Where there has been a clear demarcation line between an American side and a communist-totalitarian side (South Korea and North Korea, West Germany and East Germany, Florida and Cuba), people chose, often at risk to their lives, to get to the American side. For all its faults, and it has many, America is a far better ally and a far better model than Mr. Putin. The reference to neo-Nazi activists does nothing to further rational discussion. There are probably neoNazis in every country, even little old Norway and big young Canada. In the Second World War, many Ukrainians welcomed and even joined the German army, mistakenly believing them to be liberators. Were all those Ukrainians Nazis? Hardly. After Stalin’s Holodomor, it was absolutely natural that many Ukrainians would join any force to fight Stalin. For those with a strong stomach, I recommend Execution by Hunger by Miron Dolot. And other Ukrainians, recognizing Lebensraum, fought with the Russians against the Germans. And others fought simply for Ukrainian independence. Complex. Messy. Today, the use of the term neo-Nazi marginalizes all those Ukrainians who simply do not want totalitarian domination. What do most Ukrainians want? What we already have. A normal life. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Freedom to challenge and remove corruption. Economic freedom. And no fear of a return to a knock on the door in the middle of the night. And innocent citizens have paid the price. Bohdan Solchanyk was killed by one of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych’s snipers. Bohdan was a dangerous man: a historian, a Christian, a lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Knowledge and integrity are very dangerous to the likes of Yanukovych and Putin, murdered on the Maidan. Peter Bulkowski Calgary

Program benefits members and community
Many of you have seen the Cresteramics store on Canyon Street. You may already know that ceramic products are available there beside the creations of local artists and artisans. Do you know that there is another site for
for special occasions, baking, planting and weeding, sorting and dusting. Other members work in paid positions, again assisted by trained staff, at many local businesses. The jobs include mail pick-up and delivery, window washing, storefront upkeep and gardening. Cresteramics members and staff work beside each other, and the members share the income. This is a win-win situation. Local businesses benefit from necessary jobs getting done, Cresteramics members benefit from employers giving them a chance to prove themselves and our community benefits from the improvements they make. Health and well-being programs happen every day. Sit and Fit, yoga, cooking, journaling, Beauty and the Beast (selfcare). Some of these take place at the Cresteramics building, some at the Creston and District Community Complex. Programs that promote ongoing learning include sign language, reading, computers and a newsletter. Cresteramics members have been involved with students at Adam Robertson Elementary School for years. They are part of music, library and computer activities. Students welcome Cresteramics members and long-term friendships have developed. A very successful transitioning program exists to help youth move from Prince Charles

Cresteramics in Creston? It is at 921 Railway Blvd. and is the home base for a day program for special adults and teens. Cresteramics is a not-for-profit society that receives funding through Community Living BC and it is much more. It is the place where about 50 members go to see their friends, get a hug or handshake, participate in the activities that interest them and work hard to help out their community. It is a place where they feel loved, safe, connected and cared about. Cresteramics members, assisted by trained staff, volunteer at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors, the Creston Valley Public Library and the College of the Rockies gardening program. Participants do jobs they like and are good at — decorating
Secondary School to the Cresteramics day program. Theatre, crafts, music and Wii are some of the just-for-fun activities at the site on Railway Boulevard. This is also where the ceramic pieces sold at the Cresteramics store are poured, fired, painted and finished. A new project called Empowering our Community started recently. Cresteramics produces positive messages for storeowners to put into bags of purchases. Watch for yours. The Cresteramics store is our program that offers opportunities for many local artists and artisans to display their work in a bright, friendly, busy place. It also provides the opportunity for Cresteramics members to interact with the public and have a work experience placement they enjoy. Val, the store manager, is excited about the store’s 28 contributors. She proudly shares their works of art while giving a little bit of information about each artist. Ron Hurry, master goldsmith, has a permanent shop within the store and is a major contributor to its success. Carolyn Stone, an artist who displays her paintings at the store, used her artwork to create a postcard-sized poster to advertise the store. This kind of caring and sharing is what makes the Cresteramics store successful for workers, vendors and shoppers. One of the reasons Creston is a strong community is because of the formal and
informal partnerships between groups, organizations and businesses. Limited resources are shared and we all benefit. A new, supportive partnership that is making Cresteramics stronger is with the Downtowner Motor Inn, which has given us space to meet at no charge. If this sounds like a very busy organization, it is. Every day is busy and full of opportunities. Colleen, a long-term member, is the keeper of the newsletter. She manages a big binder that helps her keep track of the activities she is part of every week. Colleen proudly shares this binder with anyone who wishes to see it. Capable, enthusiastic staff work together and with the members to determine which activity is most suitable for each person. Flexibility, patience, knowledge, humor and strength are just some of the skills I witness when I watch the staff interact with the members. There are many advantages to Cresteramics members working in the community, both for the community and for the members. The community becomes aware of the skills and personalities of the members. This knowledge leads to acceptance. The members learn life skills that benefit them and know that they are contributing to the community they live in. The sky’s the limit for Crawford Bay students BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
What started as one Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School student’s math project has turned into something bigger — and gathered three more students along the way. Drew Rideout (Grade 12), Daelin Smith and Daniel Wensick (Grade 8), and Iyra Couling (Grade 7) are developing a weather balloon, with the goal of having it record temperature, pressure and video at an altitude of about 40 kilometres. Now dubbed the Eos Project, named for the Greek goddess of dawn, it began in January when Rideout was assigned a math project that could be applied to the real world, and he began to consider something, well, out of this world. “I looked at space stuff because I was always interested in it,” he said. The other team members were immediately drawn to the project because of its near-to-space objective. “I’m never going to go into space,” said Wensink. “But if I can see almost to space, even on a video recording, that’d be cool.” The project’s budget is about $3,200, helped in part by a $2,000 Columbia Basin Trust grant and donations from the community. Those contributions have enabled the team to buy most of the equipment needed for the Eos Project, including the balloon and some sensors. The balloon itself weighs 3,000 grams, and will have a parachute and foam box containing sensors and recording equipment attached beneath it. When inflated with helium, it will be about 2.1 metres (seven feet) in diameter, but will expand to about 13.1 metres (43 feet) when it reaches its maximum altitude of 40 kilometres, where the exterior temperature will be about –60 C. The two-kilogram payload will include two GoPro cameras — one aimed at straight down, the other at the horizon — which they’re hoping to have GoPro sponsor. Another piece of equipment is the automatic packet reporting system, which will allow real-time communication with the balloon, a step up from the GPS in the original plan. A flight prediction program will help them pick the best day to send it up, and the flight will last about two hours before the balloon pops, deploying the parachute and letting the box fall safely within a 50-kilometre radius of its launch.

After it lands — in Kootenay Lake, they hope, rather than in the mountains — they will be able to glean data from the box’s sensors, “like how fast it falls and how fast it expands,” said Couling. The project’s success isn’t simply in the statistics, though. “Stats are cool, but it’s not like we’re going to find anything anyone hasn’t before,” said Couling. But details of their project could help others do something similar. “We’ll publish it on the website and have it available for other people who want to do it,” said Rideout. CBESS isn’t the first school to launch a weather balloon, but it’s still attracting
attention when the team reaches out for help, and even earned them a visit to the 3D printing lab at Selkirk College. “It’s really surprising how many people offered to help,” said Smith. “One person offered to fly beside it and get footage from his plane, just because he can.” If everything falls into place, the launch could happen as early as midJune, and although Rideout graduates this year, he’s not pushing for it to happen — he’ll gladly return when everything is ready to go. “I’d rather do it right than do it rushed and lose it,” he said. Thanks to the efforts of a handy group of volunteers, bats can now find new summer homes in the Creston Valley. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and the Kootenay Community Bat Project have installed four bat houses on the Frog Bear Conservation Corridor lands near Wynndel. The bat houses are made of several chambers that bats can crawl into, providing safe, dry roost sites for maternity bat colonies.

“The Creston Valley is an important habitat for bats like the Yuma and little brown myotis,” says Dr. Cori Lausen, a bat expert working on the project. “These bat species form large maternity colonies which are groups of females that roost together to have their pups.” Once considered common, the little brown myotis is at risk of becoming listed as an endangered species in Canada due to the devastating impacts of white nose syndrome, a disease that has killed millions of bats in Eastern Canada. The disease has not yet reached

Camping season is almost upon us and it will soon be time to take that trailer out for some fun times. But is it fun for the driver? – Towing a trailer may be one of the most stressful driving situations for many truck owners. For one thing, it is not easy to manouevre around corners and change lanes with that extra length behind your truck. Backing up also can be challenging and towing up a steep hill can be tough on your truck. Whether you tow a boat, car, snowmobiles, or motorcycles, custom truck accessories can make towing less nerve-wracking. Don’t Tow Too Much Weight Pulling too much weight can be very dangerous. Check your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s towing capacity, including the maximum gross trailer weight and tongue weight it can handle. Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases, it is about 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight. Tongue weight of up to 300 pounds can be measured on a household scale by resting the trailer

Taking the stress out of towing a trailer coupler on the scale and placing the scale on a box so that the coupler is at its normal towing height. The trailer must be fully loaded and level. Use the Right Hitch and Other Equipment Just as each vehicle has a maximum towing capacity so too does each trailer hitch, hitch ball, ball mount and safety chain. To tow safely, you need to make sure every component you use is ready to handle the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Remember, your towing capacity is equal to the capacity of the weakest link in the system.

Choosing A Hitch Ball If you have a drawbar style hitch, the hitch ball usually is built right in. But if you have a receiver-style hitch, you’ll need to choose your own hitch ball. Like vehicles and trailer hitches, hitch balls also are assigned a maximum tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating. There is a unique fascination with golf, unlike other games. A golfer may at any time hit an extraordinary shot as well or even better than the greats of the game. So it was with Castlegar’s 23-year-old Nik Jmaeff (Creston Valley Bakey owner Yuri Jmaeff’s nephew) in the Creston Golf Club’s 2014 Blossom Open, when he sank a six iron for a score of two on the par five 11th hole — an albatross or double eagle! (For non-golfers, an explanation: it involves launching a golf ball over a quarter-mile into a hole four inches in diameter in two shots.) To place this miraculous feat in perspective, we only have to examine the performances in major championships of the “legends of the game”. They had thousands of opportunities to match Jmaeff’s achievement, but after 1936 not a single one has managed it. Less spectacular, but also notable were some impressive performances on a local level by younger golfers. Josh Colleti from Nelson won the low gross championship in fine style, low net in the championship flight was Curtis Huscroft, and teenager Braydon Czar earned a score of 76 on his first round to win the first flight low gross. In the ladies’ division, Lecara Davidson, after leading on the first day, came within two shots of her first championship. We hope that these fine young golfers will inspire other Creston youngsters to take up this most popular of lifetime sports through the fine junior program. Of course, there were some impressive performances from the more experienced players. Cherie Baker was ladies’ champion for the outstanding 14th time, while the second low gross prize went to Leslie Harbison. In the men’s division, veteran Greg Caldwell from Cranbrook scored 153 after 36 holes to tie Colleti, only to lose the playoff for the championship. Also, Bryan Smithson led the first day with a very tidy 74, and Ron Young, with a low gross of 164 with a 17 handicap, was low net champion. Visitors commented on the surprisingly excellent condition of the course after such a severe winter and the “awesome” hospitality of local golfers and the restaurant. Kudos to Don Price, his committee and the pro shop with Brian O’Keefe for their usual smoothly run tournament. Scoring Ladies’ flight: Gross: Cherie Baker, (166), Leslie Harbison, (second, 174). CLES students ‘speak out’ through silence
On April 17, over 50 Canyon-Lister Elementary School students took a vow to be silent for the world’s children whose voices are not heard.

In 2013, inspired, passionate students came back from We Day and had an idea to start a Be the Change group. On Nov. 1, 2013, to help make a change in the world, students began weekly meetings. Following Craig and Marc Kielburger’s lead to create a better world, the students (with help from our teachers) joined a Free the Children program called Adopt a Village. What is Adopt a Village? The program builds on the five pillars that create a healthy community: education, clean water and sanitation, health, alternative income and livelihood, agriculture and food security. There are eight countries this program supports, including Ecuador, Ghana, Haiti, India, Kenya, Nicaragua, rural China and Sierra Leone. The students had a democratic vote and the majority chose to raise money to build a school in India. Students have been working hard to learn about India: dress, language, customs and religion. By making posters, we are sharing our knowledge with our school. Each $20 we raise pays for one brick. Our goal is to raise $500, which will pay for 100 bricks. We will be placing donation jars around town: Creative Fix, Pharmasave, Card and Stationery, Black Bear Books, Bahamas Travel, Canyon Country Store and the Canyon-Lister Elementary School. The Be the Change group is also involved in another Free the Children campaign called, We are Silent. On April 17, students were silent to raise awareness for those whose
voices are not heard: child labourers, children not allowed to go to school or who don’t even have access to clean water. Here are some examples of why we were being silent for a day: Last year,
66 million primary school-aged children attended classes hungry in developing countries, 4.7 million children around the world are refugees, one in five Canadian students were cyberbullied, and 8.2 per cent of house-
holds in America didn’t have enough money to buy food for themselves or their families. We hope our efforts will change not only India, but the world.
