Selkirk College provides turning point for international music star Submitted Nelson Star
When Kiesza Rae Ellestad was 18 and charting a course for a career at sea, an acceptance letter from Selkirk College’s Contemporary Music & Technology Program caused her to veer towards her true passion. Today the 25 yearold Selkirk College alumnae is known as Kiesza and her music career has taken off with the meteoric rise of her single “Hideaway.” Over the last few weeks the Canadian singer-songwriter has watched her catchy pop/dance song claim number-one on the UK charts and the official video of “Hideaway” has more than 12 million YouTube views and is growing by ¼ million views a day.
Kiesza graduated from Selkirk College’s Contemporary Music & Technology Program five years ago and is now enjoying a great run of success thanks to her hit song “Hideaway.”
“It was the pivotal point where I decided that I was going to give music a real shot,” Kiesza says. “I was more into sailing and learning to navigate; I was directing my life towards working on tall ships and was making my way to Ja-
pan. When we arrived in Hawaii I spoke to my mom on the phone and she told me that I’d been accepted to Selkirk College. I left the ship and took a risk, I decided to go back to school.” Growing up in Calgary, Kiesza split her time between her love of music and dance with sailing. She was part of the acclaimed Young Canadians to fuel her passion for performance and the Royal Canadian Navy reserves to tap into her interest in water. Before she left for her sailing adventure on the Pacific, Kiesza submitted an audition tape to Selkirk College after hearing about the highly respected twoyear music program from a friend. Instead of heading to Japan on a tall ship, she packed her bags to Nelson
with her guitar. “Selkirk is one of the best places where you can go to really discover who you are as a musician,” she says. “To go there with an open mind provided me with a great opportunity because I was able to explore so many options. When I entered Selkirk I thought I was a folk singer, but I explored all these different styles and it’s turned out that I’m this electronic, diva, house musician.” A Relatively Rapid Rise After graduating from Selkirk College, Kiesza continued onto Berklee College of Music in Boston which allowed her to make inroads into the New York music scene. Over the last five years Kiesza has been working her way through the industry as
a songwriter—she has written songs for Rihanna, Kylie Minogue and Icona Pop—while continuing her work as solo artist. Last month Kiesza’s career took a sharp turn upwards when “Hideaway” rocketed to number-one in the UK and started to spread across Europe where it continues to rise in popularity. With an impressive video shot on the streets of Brooklyn that features zero edits and includes her talents in dancing/choreography, the song is showing no sign of slowing down. “It’s very reminiscent of the 1990s and in the UK right now that sort of deep house ‘90s sound is very zeitgeist,” she explains. “A lot of people who lived through the ‘80s and ‘90s get nostalgic from the sound. I’ve
noticed there is quite a broad reach, it hits younger kids who feel it’s a brand new, fresh sound. But for people that are in their 40s who lived through that time, it brings them back to when they were growing up.” Currently in London, Kiesza released her second official video “What Is Love” earlier this month and continues to write more songs for an album which is slated for an October release. She will be touring Europe this summer and plans to return to Canada for a tour when her album is released. Selkirk Roots Play an Important Role The bustling streets of London are a world away from mountain life in the Kootenays, but Kiesza credits Selkirk College with the turning point in her
young career. “I loved how the school was small and in an intimate setting,” she says of the program which is based out of Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. “You knew all your instructors very well and they care about each student a little bit more because there is that closer relationship.” The instructor who stands out the most for Kiesza is Gilles Parenteau. She says the keyboard instructor was a “musical guru” during her time at Selkirk and provided an important mentor at a key point in her life. “Gilles was a huge influence on me, he really pushed me,” she says. “Music is a tough world and that’s the first thing they tell you… the odds are against you.

News Season in preheat mode for SEFC Jim sinclair Castlegar News
An expected wet weekend meant relative calm at the Castlegar office of the Southeast Fire Centre (SEFC) when contacted on May 16. The BC Forest Service’s Wildfire Management Branch had sent out a seasonal primer to various media outlets the previous week, sort
of a heads-up about desired protocols relating to upcoming incidents that are all but guaranteed as the weather heats up and dries out in the coming weeks and months. The pre-season package offered tips regarding best practices for media reps attending wildfire scenes, for example, making recommendations on attire and
footwear, and the best procedures for gathering and sharing information in the safest ways possible. Requests on the preferred methods of contact with the Fire Centre were also laid out in the primer, prepared in advance of what is typically a fairly active season. Jordan Turner told the Castlegar News on Friday that no restrictions were currently in
effect in the region, although a wet forecast did not necessarily negate the possibility of fires over the next number of days. “We’re not really expecting much for the time being,” said Turner. “Of course we’re always on the alert that there could be a dry lightning fire if a storm comes through, but for the most part it’s still been very wet this spring.”

And it’s true. But Gilles really believed that I could do this and he pushed me above and beyond what you expect an instructor to do.” Parenteau remembers Kiesza as one of the most memorable students he’s taught in his 23 years at Selkirk College. “She is probably the most determined person I’ve ever met… nothing can stop that girl,” he says. “She’s the kind of person you don’t forget.” The veteran instructor says Kiesza could have focussed on a number of avenues of the music business while she was at Selkirk College, but she chose keyboards in order to get a better grip
on songwriting. It’s a choice that has obviously served her well. “She’s smart because she knows you need to be wellrounded in this industry,” says Parenteau. “It’s not about being able to dance, sing and look good… you need more than that. To be able to write songs like she can, that helps your career in such an important way.” Kiesza’s fondness for Selkirk College goes beyond the classroom and extends to the community where she spent two important years of her life. “I loved Nelson... it’s a magical place,” she says. “It has these four perfect seasons with all this great outdoor stuff to do, you can go skiing in the winter and waterskiing in the
summer. It’s a visually stunning place to live.” An Inevitable Return Between creating more great music and getting used to British paparazzi jumping out from behind bushes in front her London home, Kiesza’s life is going full speed. Humble and genuine, she says the last few weeks have been a fun ride. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet because it’s happening so quickly,” she says. She continues to keep in touch with Selkirk College by visiting old classmates when the opportunity presents itself both in person and via social media. Later this month she is meeting up with fellow music program grad Erica Dee who is also enjoy-
ing some pretty sound success in Europe. Though not exactly sure when, Kiesza says she would like to stop by Nelson and visit her old digs where she would welcome the opportunity to speak with current students. “There’s a lot that I have learned going through the industry at this point,” says Kiesza. “I understand what it takes to get yourself out there and I think a lot of people don’t really know how to get from one point to another. There is a mindset you need to sink into and I have a lot of advice I could give to students. “It would be nice to rep it [Selkirk College]. I would love to come back and visit and involved in any $ be99 way I can.”

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS
PETS on PARADE WITH THE HEAT OF SUMMER SLOWLY APPROACHING US, THE TRAIL REGIONAL BCSPCA WOULD LIKE TO REMIND EVERYONE ABOUT HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO LEAVE YOUR PETS IN YOUR CAR. The temperature in a vehicle, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level high enough to seriously harm or even kill your pet. A dog can be overwhelmed by heat in as little as 10 minutes. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. They do not perspire through their skin like people. On warm days the air and upholstery in your vehicle heats up to high temperatures making it impossible for your pets to cool themselves. Your dog will be far more comfortable at home.
If you see an animal in a car on a warm or humid day who you believe may be in trouble, ask stores to page customers. If the dog is in distress call your local BCSPCA, animal control or RCMP immediately. More information at spca.bc.ca
The risk is real. If it is 26 degrees out, inside your car-even with the windows cracked-the temperature can reach 37 degrees in 10 minutes and 43 degrees in 20 minutes. A dog’s normal temperature is 38 degrees. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41 degrees, cell and organ damage begins to occur. Heatstroke symptoms include: Exaggerated panting; bright red gums; rapid or erratic pulse; thick saliva; anxious or staring expression; weakness and muscle tremors; lack of coordination; convulsions or vomiting; seizures or coma. Death can occur quickly after that. If your animal shows signs of heatstroke follow these instructions: -Immediately move your pet to the shade; -Wet the animal down with cool water including foot pads and around the head; -Fan vigorously to promote evaporation. This process cools the blood reducing core temperature;

There’s Nothing Like it!
A tribute to a Canadian music legend is on the way to the West Kootenays for an appearance in Castlegar on June 16. Boundary music lovers will be treated to the show on Saturday, June 14 in Grand Forks. The man at the forefront of a loving tribute to Don Messer’s Jubilee is a guy who could well be working on legendary status of his own before he’s through – none other than Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods. Those of us of a certain vintage will remember how big Don Messer’s Jublilee once was. In some of our hazy analog memories, when phones were no smarter than we were, there was a show that clearly dominated the TVs across the country. I can remember collection nights on my Vancouver Sun route. I couldn’t get to all 75 of my customers during the show’s half-hour Monday night slot, but as I
made my rounds, 99 per cent of the viewers I noticed were enjoying the show while it was on. Traditional fiddle music delivered with first rate skill, along with a tasteful variety of other musical offerings proved to be a recipe that would even rival Hockey Night in Canada during its 1957-69 run. The popularity of Scott Woods and his contemporaries also goes to prove that great material will always find its way into the hands of outstanding talent. Longtime fans will delight in the shows coming to this neck of the nation, and the un-converted may want to board the bandwagon in 12 bars or less. The tour is making 86 stops, the crew will no-doubt be in top form for these two late-spring dates. Featured with the Scott Woods Band will be Cape Breton Tenor Tommy Leadbeater as “Charlie,” and the velvet vocals as “Marg.” An unforgettable tribute to Don Messer’s Jubliee, Sat June

The shores of the Slocan River are 300 pounds cleaner thanks to the hefty efforts of the Adventure Tourism Leadership and Safety (ATLAS) Academy. Sixteen students from the outdoors program, based out of L.V. Rogers Secondary, left bright and early for the Slocan River on May 13 intent on “cleaning up the waters and shores of the ever popular bending river”. After reviewing and learning more about proper river safety training, the group set out on rafts with John Dutton, owner of Nelson Whitewater Rafting (NWR) and NWR employee Pete Johnson who generously donated their time. The group found very little trash which could be a reflection of the surrounding community. “There was a lot less trash from recreationalists; less styrofoam and such than in the past,” said ATLAS instructor Graeme Marshall. But after several hours of scanning the shores, the students began finding large and older industrial waste which amassed to almost 300 pounds of glass, rubber, met-

al, and plastic. Marshall said he wasn’t surprised as this was his third time doing a clean up excursion with ATLAS. The students, however, were pretty surprised by what they found and asked the question, “Who would dump items such as an old bed in the river?” “This haul was an important reminder to respect the hazards and treasures of the Slocan [River] which offers so much; whether its kayaking, canoeing, scenic tube floats, or refreshing dips throughout the seasons,” wrote the students in a summary of their experience. “With the prop-
er care and upkeep we can hopefully continue to delight in all its gifts for generations to come.” Marshall commented that their day on the river was four days after the tragic mishap involving four youth who perished canoeing on Slocan Lake on May 10. “It was a little sad at times thinking about [the kids],” said Marshall. “In conjunction with river safety, the [ATLAS] kids are getting proper training learning how to manage risk. “I’m proud to be hanging out with such a great group of kids. The learning in the ATLAS program
is quite immediate and this provides motivation for them in the future.” The ATLAS Academy provides numerous opportunities for students to work along with leaders in the adventure tourism realm such as ski patrol, ski guides, paramedics, and rafting operations. “It really is inspiring to have a public education program that works so closely with these talented and willing mentors,” said Marshall. “It is great to be part of such a positive and motivated group of teens who have a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.”

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week May 30, 2014
Tip of the Week: The New Moon in Gemini occurs on May 28 at 11:40 am PDT. Though the Sun entered the ‘sign’ of Gemini, not the constellation (no they are not the same thing though both are ‘Zodiacs’ = circle of life), on May 20th at 7:59 pm PDT, the deeper effects begin at the time of the New Moon. Both constitute different cycles which overlap. Of course, there are always many overlapping cycles and deciphering each and their influence is core to the art of interpretation. As for the Gemini theme under this New Moon cycle, the emphasis is upon communication and especially upon mutuality, equality and fairness in relationships. This is all part of a much larger cycle, the one linked to the recent Cardinal Grand Square. Yes, it continues to linger. What may be less commonly understood is that its roots reach back all the way to the mid-sixties! That is when the current thrust of the women’s liberation revolution germinated. Over the past 50 years or so that revolution to achieve gender equality has grown into a mature tree and it continues to generate many new seedlings year after year. Yes, the steady evolution of modern civilization includes nothing short of complete equality between the sexes in every respect. It does not take a lot of insight to see this occurring. Yet, this reminder of its roots comes at a pivotal time. So, this theme of equality is alive and well but many remain confused about it and challenged by it. This is especially true generally speaking of the male gender. While the women assert and rise to new positions of power and authority, men are challenged to yield. To some this may be regarded as the opposite of what nature intended. However, when we consider that we each are comprised of male and female energies, as with the principles of Yin and Yang, which are found in every atom let alone every person, we can begin to understand that gender equality is not simply the new norm; it is the true balance of nature. As a result of this revolution a genuine state of equality is emerging and this will foster higher levels of justice than humanity has ever seen in recorded history. Yes, in this micro moment we see the reflections of macro movements.

A flood of new thoughts and perceptions are filling your mind. It’s time to tie-up loose ends. Many of these are centered on home, garden and family. You are ready to make a few improvements. It will feel good to tend to long-awaited projects. You will likely invest to build. Gaining the cooperation of significant others will prove important. Tending to multiple streams and fronts continues. In fact, you may find yourself adding a few more to the list. The prospect of expressing your thoughts and feelings in beautiful and varied ways is inspiring. Yet your ability to focus on one project at a time may prove extra challenging. Your clear commitment and patient resolve will prove extra valuable now. Your energy levels are rising. This is helping you to build your momentum. Plans made weeks or even months ago are now in motion. A focus on family and security are tightly woven. Yet, it may seem like you have to give more than usual. Still, you are keen and determined to take new leads and initiatives. Energy invested equals energy earned. You are generally in an expansive cycle in your life. This trend will continue. But now is a good time to re-charge and restore your energy levels. Summer has not yet officially begun and your spring chores and errands are likely done or almost. While it may prove best to avoid starting new projects, creative attention given to existing ones should prove invigoration. Forging new connections, friendships and alliances continues. These will inspire and perhaps require you to obtain new tools, techniques and methods. The more willing and able you are to comply and adapt the better. This may require that you access hidden reserves of faith and confidence, again. Take a deep breath or two, re-center and persevere. New leads and directions in your public and professional life are underway. A pioneering attitude and approach is a key to your success. The time remains good to ask for earned rewards and favours. Increasing the scope and quality of your network for the sake of practical, creative collaborations and longer term objectives is especially important.

What constitutes your best investments and where are they best directed? These and other such questions are playing on your mind. All forms of energy output count, not just money. Sometimes, we need what others have. This can include their talents and resources and sometimes the best way to obtain them is to emulate their choices and actions. The time has come to make some sober and perhaps serious choices. ‘Should I stay or go’ may be a big question on your mind. This one of those times when your ability to hear the voice of your heart is extra important. Your truth may not be that of others and pleasing all the people is simply not reality. Heed your heart to free your mind. Some new action on relationship fronts is getting the press on your headlines. Yet, your intuitions are telling you to proceed with some caution. Just because you speak the same language as others it does not mean you understand each other. You may have to give more than usual to succeed and be the one to adjust to the situation, but it may be worth it. Key communications of late are leading you to reconsider your approach. It is all a part of a steady learning curve that began late last year. How can you shift your perspective to improve your business and/or your lifestyle? The time is right to reconsider things and this trend will continue over the coming weeks. Review to refine. The time has come to take some creative initiatives. Commitment is a key word now and will be over the coming months. Only you know what the commitment is to. Creating beauty, comfort and a sense of security in your home is a likely area of focus. The deeper silver lining includes creating a space and atmosphere that feels empowering for all who live there. Opening new lines of communication with family and friends is an important theme now and will be over the coming weeks. It is a feature of deeper levels of change that are occurring within you. Old relationship associations are ending and new ones are rising to take their place. At least the usual patterns are changing. Trust this flow and share your thoughts and feelings.

headroom and some room to stretch out either piloting or co-piloting the Micra. Under hard acceleration, primarily from the 4-speed automatic, the Micra is quite vocal. You can really hear the engine noise intrude the cabin. It’s not a performance machine like the Nissan GT-R, where you want to hear as much ruckus as you can. However, when cruising at highway speeds – without the lead foot acceleration – my driving partner and I noticed how quiet the cabin is. Wind noise is kept at bay and it’s serene. Furthermore, it was an incredibly blustery day when we took these pint-sized four-doors out. Needless to say, you could feel the swagger of the car at highway speeds. But in its defense, larger vehicles felt the wrath of Mother Nature’s blow, too.
While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior. I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra. Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you. Summed up, the Micra is affordable transportation with amiable drivability, an easy-on-the eyes interior and overall a bubbly personality. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Go getter Jetta without premium price tag By Bob McHugh
Volkswagen introduced a bigger and made-in-America Jetta for the 2011 model year and in doing so it profoundly altered its sales position.
It was no longer fringe a “Golf with a trunk” but a mainstream stand-alone model. Moving to Mexico allowed VW to slash the start price for the 2011 Jetta by a whopping $6,300, in Canada, compared
to the previous year edition. And it has certainly paid-off in terms of sales. Last year (2013), VW Canada sold more than twice as many Jetta models than it did in 2010 and the Jetta’s sales posi-
tion jumped from eleventh to sixth in the highly competitive small car segment. Used Jetta buyers should also benefit by getting to choose from a larger pool of previously owned Jetta models on
the market. On the downside, this generation Jetta has lost some of its Germanic-built prestige, in the eyes of VW purists. The redesigned 2011 Jetta’s longer wheelbase allows ex-
tra passenger space inside a cabin that boasts best-inclass rear seat legroom, plus its 440-litre trunk is larger than both Honda Civic and Mazda3. Even a base Trendline edition comes with
power windows and door locks, 60/60 split folding rear seats, six-way manually adjustable front seats, a heightadjustable telescopic steering wheel, anti-lock brakes and an electronic stability control system.

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Go getter Jetta without premium price tag continued from page B2
The entry engine is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, that can produce 114 horsepower and mated to either a five-speed manual or an optional sixspeed (Tiptronic) automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 9.1 L/100km in the city and 6.0 L/100km on the highway. The other trim levels are Comfortline, Sportline and Highline. A 2.5-litre (170-horsepower) gas engine was optional on Comfortline and standard with Sportline and Highline. This five-cylinder engine is available in numerous VW products and has good low-end power, but sounds a little ragged at the high end of its speed range. Fuel economy is rated at 9.9 in the city and 6.2 L/100km on the highway. The TDI edition is a popular choice with Jetta buyers. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine and came in Comfortline and Highline trim levels. Like all diesel engines the torque and fuel economy figures are impressive. It’s rated at 236 ft-lbs @ 1,750 rpm and can sip diesel fuel at a rate of 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.6 L/100km on the highway. Jetta’s big news story for the 2012 model year was the introduction of a high-performance GLI edition. Subtle exterior styling changes

wrap a package of go-faster mechanical goodies that includes a turbocharged (200 horsepower) 2.0-litre TSFI en-
gine and a fully-independent multi-link rear suspension. Notable standard features in GLI include its dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and push-button start/stop and a unique flat-bottomed three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Surprisingly, the GLI is more fuel frugal (8.8/6.1 L/100 km - city/highway) than the other gas engine versions of Jetta. However, it likes premium fuel. The 2013 model year brought numerous minor trim changes to Jetta, but a new Hybrid edition was the big introduction. Jetta Hybrid is powered by a full-hybrid system that can run in a pure electric mode. Its E-driving range is limited to about 2 km, but if used wisely, such as stop-n-go traffic, it’s a terrific fuel saver. Jetta Hybrid’s city/highway fuel rating is 4.6/4.2 L/100km respectively. Although the 2011 and 2012 model years of Jetta received “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it got a “marginal” rating in a new small overlap frontal crash test introduced by the Institute for 2013 model year vehicles. This crash test is designed to replicate an offset collision with another vehicle or an object like a tree or a utility pole. Overall, a near-new Volkswagen Jetta can be an excellent purchase for buyers who want a compact sedan that offers Euro style, performance, heritage and flair, without a premium price tag. Price Check: 2011 - 2013 Volkswagen Jetta (May 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today 2011 Comfortline $13,000 to $17,000 2012 Comfortline $15,000 to $19,000 2013 Comfortline $18,000 to $22,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase.

Drivers feel gouged at the gas pumps, but not enough to stay home By Keith Morgan
Two thirds of BC residents say gas price increases have caused hardship in their household, according to a new Black Press/Insights West poll. And 55 percent of those polled say they now drive less than usual due to high gas prices. Gas taxes are too high say 85 percent and 77 percent claim they are unfair for 77. A whopping 91 percent assert drivers are gouged at the pump before long weekends.
Those comments were the results of a scientifically conducted poll but it remarkably reflects many sentiments expressed in response to our unscientific Question of the Week, which we posed before the long weekend. We asked if high gas prices would stall planned driving vacation plans and a massive 560 of you were moved to answer online. Specifically, we asked “Would a 10 cents per litre increase in the price of gas at the pump cause you to cancel a driving vacation?”
A categorical ‘no’ was the response from 131 readers, a similar number said ‘yes’ but most wavered, saying the increase would have to be more substantial or they might consider shortening their route or holiday’s duration. Shawn, of Maple Ridge, set the tone for those undeterred by the assault on their wallet: “Money isn’t the main focus when it is a well-deserved vacation.” Kay, of Coquitlam, warned: “I would not cancel . . . however I may change plans and go to the USA instead of Canada.”
Renay, of Richmond, said: “I would still take the vacation and just have to re-adjust the budget to include the increase.” Alyssa, from Mission, remarked: “I have two young children and my husband and I are all about making wonderful memories for them. It would also be hard to tell a child that a vacation away has been cancelled due to the cost of gas.” Raylene, of West Kelowna, would take the wheel: “My husband has got a heavy foot. I would still go but my driving
would be at the speed limit. I might get better gas mileage if I go slower and not brake as much.” Murray, in Vancouver, has some good advice: “I would minimize fuel consumption by keeping the car maintained, keep tire pressure at the optimum level, pack all luggage inside the car to reduce air drag, and not drive aggressively. The time to scrimp is during day-to-day use: don’t drive when you could walk or cycle.”

Debbie, in Abbotsford, claimed: “It’s cheaper now to fly to Vegas or California, than to drive.” BC tourism’s loss is the United States’ gain; with many saying cheaper gas in down south made it a more economical drive vacation destination, even with the current inferior exchange rate. Sandi, of Vancouver, said: “We cancelled our Christmas trip and will not be travelling this summer. . . . groceries are my first priority.” Chris, in Aldergrove, stood alone with his comment: “I think we have some of the
lowest gas prices in the world.” Steve, of Port Alberni, pulled out his calculator: “A 1,000-km trip uses less than 100 litres (with an increase of 10 cents per litre) that’s $10 more. I would not tell my family we are cancelling for that amount!” Rodney, of Vernon, also did some math: “A good modern vehicle can get a fuel economy of about 10L/100km (about 28MPG, for us old folks). So a 3,000 km driving vacation would cost $417 in gas at a price of $1.39, and the same trip would cost $447 in gas at $1.49.” keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Spring has sprung and the weekend drivers are out in force on the Sea to Sky Highway. Frustrating to find yourself as one of a dozen following a driver who won’t even match the posted speed limit. The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialist work and I’m often asked if I could recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand. But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication, in Abbotsford. jor sheet metal components left was the roof, “A” pillars, rocker-panels, bulkhead and the two front frame rails and the rear section of the floor. I have heard the expression “better than new” a few times over the years and have often wondered how can it be better than new? But it can. Today’s restorations have improved with the help of new technology such as compression fit welding equipment, seam sealers and paint products including epoxy primers, spray on polyester fillers and the waterborne color coats with a clear coat finish. These
They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs kept mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, was short changed resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions! Laura Ballance’s original plan was to have a sympathetic restoration performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are no different from houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only ma-
products are far superior to anything that came off the production line during the ‘60s. Rick Francoeur and his team at 360 always allow the customer to be in control and understand customer needs and expectations, even down to the smallest sentimental detail. However, sometimes they have to advise the client for their own benefit, sometimes financial, safety related or future re-sale value. Laura wanted the Mustang refinished it its metallic blue, all the rage during the ‘60s and the car she remembers. But if the car is to retain its value and to represent how it came off the production line as a rare T5, it had to be painted its original Ford Paint Code Z, an interesting colour called Sauterne Gold Irid. This colour combined with a black interior and vinyl roof will make the car a real eye catcher. Next week we will look into the mechanical component restoration and exterior trim replacement. Taking the stress out of towing a trailer By Ian Harwood
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT towing
Camping season is almost upon us and it will soon be time to take that trailer out for some fun times. But is it fun for the driver? – Towing a trailer may be one of the most stressful driving situations for many truck owners. For one thing, it is not easy to manouevre around corners and change lanes with that extra length behind your truck. Backing up also can be challenging and towing up a steep hill can be
tough on your truck. Whether you tow a boat, car, snowmobiles, or motorcycles, custom truck accessories can make towing less nerve-wracking. Don’t Tow Too Much Weight Pulling too much weight can be very dangerous. Check your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s towing capacity, including the maximum gross trailer weight and tongue weight it can handle. Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases, it is
about 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight. Tongue weight of up to 300 pounds can be measured on a household scale by resting the trailer coupler on the scale and placing the scale on a box so that the coupler is at its normal towing height. The trailer must be fully loaded and level. Use the Right Hitch and Other Equipment Just as each vehicle has a maximum towing capacity so too does each trailer hitch,

The Kia Optima demands that you set aside a few assumptions: that you need to pay a bundle for exquisite styling and craftsmanship, that a sedan is no place for performance, and that others have the segment all locked up. At Castlegar Kia we invite you to take the new Optima for a spirited, no obligation test drive before you settle on your next car. That is, of course, if you don’t mind being blown away.

Taking the stress out of towing a trailer continued from page B9
hitch ball, ball mount and safety chain. To tow safely, you need to make sure every component you use is ready to handle the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Remember, your towing capacity is equal to the capacity of the weakest link in the system. Choosing a Trailer Hitch All trailer hitches feature a class rating, as well as a weight rating, so be sure the hitch can accommodate the loaded trailer. For instance, Reese Class 2 ($159) hitches have a maximum rated capacity of 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Class IV ($175) receiver-style hitches have a maximum capacity of 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer

weight. If you need more towing capacity than the traditional receiver-style weight distributing hitch, then you need to step up to a fifthwheel or gooseneck hitch. Prices start at $650. Choosing A Hitch Ball If you have a drawbar style hitch, the hitch ball usually is built right in. But if you have a receiver-style hitch, you’ll need to choose your own hitch ball.
Like vehicles and trailer hitches, hitch balls also are assigned a maximum tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating. Hitch balls are made from a variety of materials, and some are available in a choice of finishes, including chrome. They cost is $12 to $14. The hitch ball diameter must be the same diameter as the trailer coupler (1 7/8 inches, 2 inches or 2 5/16

inches). The shank diameter of the hitch ball should be the same as the hole diameter in the ball mount. The shank length should be long enough to allow at least two threads to be visible when the hitch ball is installed and the nut completely tightened. Load Your Trailer Properly Rule of thumb is roughly two-thirds (60 to 66 percent) of the gross load
weight should be positioned toward the front half of the trailer. Place large or heavy objects on the trailer first. Tie these objects down securely and from several angles to ensure they do not shift. Pack remaining items in a manner that maintains balance of the trailer. Once the trailer is loaded, doublecheck the positioning and stability of the cargo. Better safe than sorry. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
