He was found guilty of robbing the Subway with his girlfriend and her 11-year-old daughter waiting in the vehicle for him. In the Mother’s Day robbery, Heatley told investigators that he needed money because his girlfriend’s daughter needed food. According to the court judgment published April 7, the daughter testified at the trial, saying that she had an idea Heatley had committed a robbery because her mother told her he
A 28-year-old Langley man has been found guilty of robbing seven food stores, mostly in Langley. On one occasion, he took his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter with him. Michael Heatley was found guilty on seven counts of robbery by Supreme Court Judge Josephson after a trial in New Westminster last month. Heatley said the robberies were committed to buy drugs for him and his girlfriend. His girlfriend was originally arrested as an accomplice, because she was with him on most of the robberies as
was getting them lunch. Instead he came back with “lots of money” and her mom drove away very quickly. Her mother also asked her to find black gloves for Heatley, which he is believed to have used in the robbery. In each case, Heatley masked his face and sometimes produced a knife, but always wore gloves. He was also found guilty of robbing a Subway in Chilliwack on Aug. 26, 2011. On Aug. 29 he robbed a Booster Juice in Port Moody and then another one in Aldergrove. Heatley told police he was in the area in Aldergrove because his girlfriend was pick-

On that same day he robbed the Fox and Hounds liquor store in Aldergrove. He was arrested following that robbery. Heatley’s defence tried to argue that Heatley confessed to the crimes falsely to protect his girlfriend from charges. The judge said what ever the motive, the “resulting confessions were nonetheless reliable.”
The bus driver in the thick of the violent assault, where a 43-year-old Surrey woman allegedly attacked a mother and her three very young children, is speaking out about the role he played in the shocking situation on May 20. Unifor Local 111 President Nathan Woods says the bus driver involved is very upset that inaccurate information has misrepresented his role in NATHAN acting quickly WOODS and appropriately to end the situation and ensure the safety of all passengers. A fellow passenger posted 20 seconds of the fight, which shows the bus driver in the background. The video has gone viral. “This violent episode with one passenger threatening a mother and her three children was deeply disturbing to the bus driver, but he moved quickly to separate the two women and the children and to get the instigator off the bus,” Woods said Saturday. Canada Day will have international flavour BRENDA ANDERSON Times Reporter
BRENDA ANDERSON Langley Times
Siblings Rodrigo Medina and Carmen Medina perform a traditional Mexican dance during a ceremony Tuesday to announce the official union of the Langley International Festival and Canada Day Celebrations. The first collaborative event will take place at Willoughby Community Park, from June 28 to July 1.
FATHER’S DAY
Relax or Traditional Fit Styles
Since its humble beginnings as a church fundraiser, which drew about 1,500 people in 2001, the goal of Langley’s International Festival has always been to foster a sense of unity among the vast array of cultures which make up the community. Over the past 12 years, the celebration of cultural diversity in Langley has grown and evolved, but its purpose has remained unchanged. Now, that co-operative spirit is being taken a step further, as the International Festival and Langley’s annual Canada Day celebrations officially join forces. The celebration of national pride, and of the diversity that makes Canada a unique and welcoming place, will happen over four days, from June 28 to July 1 at Willoughby Community Park. A co-operative effort by the Township of Langley, Tourism Langley, the Langley Events Centre, the Langley School District and the Fraser Valley Regional Library, the event marks the first time these groups have all joined forces to present a major community festival. Langley has always done an excellent job of celebrating Canada Day, said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese, speaking during the official media launch, held on Tuesday, May 27 at the Tourism Langley office. Now, the celebration has “gone through a transformation and an evolution … we can all be proud of,” he said. The marriage of Canada Day and the International Festival is one that will last many years, he predicted. The combination of the two events embraces exactly what Canada is known for — its cultural diversity — said Langley School District Trustee Megan Dykeman. Sarwan Randhawa, librarian with Fraser Valley Regional Library and International Festival Society member for the past 10 years, told the crowd he expects the collaborative event will be the “biggest ever in the history of Langley.” It is also the only event that is actively promoted and supported by library staff, he added. “The world identifies Canada as as a multicultural society and a model of tolerance and acceptance for other countries to follow,” said MLA

Rich Coleman, in a written statement, which was read out at the launch. “Langley’s International Festival and Canada Day celebrations are an important way for our community to celebrate Canada through sports, our various cultures and our common heritage as Canadians,” read a statement from Langley MP Mark Warawa. The first two days of the four-day event will be a sports festival, featuring competition in everything from masters lacrosse to beach volleyball, soccer, bocce and tennis. As many as 600 athletes are expected to participate, said Tourism Langley’s Mun Bagri. Once the nets and rackets and balls have been put away, the traditional celebration will begin. On June 30 and July 1, the festival will offer live entertainment, a marketplace, food vendors serving a range of traditional ethnic fare, international pavilions, children’s entertainers, a children’s talent show, rides, a car show, fireworks and more. On July 1, there will be a parade of nations, with participants representing more than 70 countries. “People will be selling things from all the countries in the world,” said Bob Barrett, president of the Langley International Festival Society. Barrett acknowledged the vast scope of the task the committee has before it. “This is a huge project,” he said, noting that organizers expect to welcome more than 50,000 visitors over the course of the celebration, which will be free and will offer visitors parking at no charge. “We’re going to feed them, entertain them and keep their children happy.” In order to make that happen, the committee will need plenty of help, he said. On Tuesday morning, the committee put out the call for anyone who is interested in being a part of the inaugural co-operative celebration to sign up. “We need to spread the word for volunteers,” said Barrett. “Without them, we are nothing.” Anyone who would like to volunteer or is interested in learning more, is invited to visit either the Langley Canada Day website at langleycanadaday.ca or the International Festival Society’s website at internationalfestival.ca.

‘Urgent’ need for better transit security From Page 1
“Unfortunately, the short 20-second cellphone video only records a very small portion of this incident and media reports have given the public inaccurate information about what really happened,” Woods said. The bus driver said there was a minor fare dispute with the accused when she first got on, but he drove four more blocks before the violent clash occurred between the mother and woman. He said the mother asked the woman not to use foul language. That is when the accused, who is still in jail, allegedly threatened to kill the mother and her three children before throwing a drink at the mother’s baby son. Defending her children, the mother
fought the accused. The bus driver asked TransLink’s control centre to call 911. He then claims he stopped the bus and attempted to stop the fight. Once the fight stopped, the bus driver said he told the mother, “it’s over, you won, good job.” and motioned her back towards her children. The driver said he wanted the mother and children to stay on the bus for their safety, but while he was getting the instigator to leave the bus, the mother got off too, through a different door. The 502 bus was stopped in front of the busy Willowbrook Shopping Centre. The bus driver did not drive away from the scene, as was reported previously. Woods said he remained on the scene for an hour, giving his account of the situation
to police. “The bus driver involved acted quickly in a violent, stressful situation with other passengers on board and did everything he could to avoid any further escalation into what truly could have been a tragedy had a weapon been used on the bus,” Woods said. “Ultimately this unfortunate incident simply emphasizes what bus drivers and their union have been saying for the past 10 years as over 1,000 assaults on drivers have been recorded — we urgently, desperately need more security on the buses — for our members and for our valued riders,” Woods says. Woods says there have been 44 assaults — as defined by the Criminal Code of Canada — on Metro Vancouver bus drivers from Jan. 1 to April 30. In the meantime, Leah Susan MacKay, 43,

who is facing charges of assault and uttering threats in relation to this attack, will be back in court on Friday, May 30. A psychiatric assessment has been ordered. MacKay will also be in court facing other charges of assault, uttering threats and breaching her conditions for an incident in Langley on April 21. When this alleged attack on the mother and her three children occurred, MacKay had posted bail just six days earlier. She was found guilty and fined $500 plus 12 months probation for assault and fear of injury in a Nov. 28, 2013 incident that took place in Squamish. In November 2010, MacKay was found guilty of assault in Langley and given 18 months probation. In November 2013, she was guilty of theft and breaching her probation.

A man found guilty of participating in the Vancouver Canucks playoff riots in 2011 was recently arrested in Langley, accused of breaking into the Glover Road Pharmacy on May 20. Osbaldo Gonzalez, 28, was sentenced to four months in jail for being involved in the riot. Now, he is back in jail along with an alleged accomplice, career criminal Natham Hamm. Both are charged with break and enter. It was a combined effort of people and dogs to catch the
bad guys at a break-in at Glover Pharmacy on Tuesday, May 20. Langley RCMP received a 911 call around 5 a.m. from a person who saw two men in a pickup truck get out and break into the front doors of the Glover Road pharmacy. While the caller was on with a 911 dispatcher, the two suspects fled in the truck. Within minutes, officers responding to the scene, observed the suspect truck travelling on Glover Road away from the scene. Officers observed the truck stop and one man get out and run, said Langley RCMP Const. Craig van Herk.
The truck then sped off. Moments later officers located the truck, later learned to be stolen, abandoned with the motor still running. Police Dog Services responded with two police dogs and began to track both suspects from the two separate locations at the same time. The first suspect was tracked, located and arrested in just under 20 minutes, the second in just over an hour, said van Herk. Gonzalez and Hamm were arrested and remain in custody facing several charges. Hamm is also charged with willfully resisting arrest.

Slight revision to tree-cutting bylaw DA N FERGU SO N Tim e s Re po r t e r
Langley Township council has approved a slightly-altered version of the temporary ban on clear-cutting in Brookswood and Fernridge. The change sets a two-tree minimum allowable cut, so people with small lots and few trees can avoid a technical violation of the bylaw that bans cutting more than eight trees or 20 per cent of trees on a property, whichever is less. Councillor Bob Long described the altered version of the bylaw as a “housekeeping update.” The debate provided an opportunity for bylaw opponents to renew their criticism. Councillor Grant Ward said creating a clear-cutting ban that only applies to Brookswood and Fernridge effectively renders the people who live there “second-class” citizens, compared to other areas of the Township. “The people who live in Brookswood-Fernridge are good people,” Ward said. “They know how to manage their property.” Councillor Charlie Fox said he would be voting for the update of the already-approved bylaw, but he remains opposed to it in principle and he believes the regulations will be difficult to enforce due to a lack of “24/7” bylaw enforcement officers. Fox repeated his call for a public hearing process to consult residents about a tree protection bylaw. “This is a tricky and sensitive issue,” Fox said. Councillor Steve Ferguson, a supporter of the clear-cutting ban, said he has personally witnessed wholesale clearing of forested lots near his home.
“Yes, indeed, it has happened,” Ferguson said. The revised bylaw passed with Ward opposed (Councillor Kim Richter, who first proposed a ban, was away). The interim clear cutting ban also allows trees to be removed if they are blocking sight lines under the Township’s highway and traffic bylaw or for a septic field or water well. T r e e s can be cut down for construction of a building if a p p r ov e d by a development permit, development variance permit or building COUNCILLOR S T E V E F E R G U S O N permit issued by the Township. And they can be removed if they are considered hazardous, as certified by an arborist, or in case of an emergency if certification is provided to the Township engineering department within 30 days after the cutting. The bylaw will remain in effect until a new official community plan has been prepared for Brookswood/ Fernridge or a permanent tree protection bylaw is passed. The Township has opened a 24hour tree cutting tip line at 604532-7520, that asks callers to leave the address where clear-cutting is taking place, along with their name and phone number and time of the call.

Question langeytimes.com
A poll conducted by Insights West, in conjunction with Black Press, shows that high gas prices are having a significant effect on people’s day-to-day lives. Those polled quite correctly identified the two major culprits — all levels of government, through taxation policies; and the oil companies themselves. B.C.’s gas prices are consistently the highest in the country. This is due solely to taxation. In particular, the provincial carbon tax, which adds almost seven cents per litre to the cost of gasoline, and the TransLink tax of 17 cents per litre, push gas prices much higher than they are in other parts of Canada, and even other parts of B.C. Drivers in Metro Vancouver pay a minimum of 41 cents per litre in taxation. Those are only two of the many government hands in our pockets when we fill up. The provincial government takes another cut, which is actually lower in Metro Vancouver than in other parts of the province. That’s becaise the province gives over some of its taxation share to TransLink. The federal government also takes a large share. It takes 10 cents per litre, plus GST. It actually charges GST on the taxes, as well as the product. This is unfair and should not be permitted. As all taxes are rolled into the price at the pump, many people are unaware of this naked tax grab. The federal government is proud of its take. It just announced how it plans to “share” this ill-gotten revenue with local governments over the next 10 years. In other words, there will be no tax relief any time soon on that front. Those surveyed by Insights West said they are driving less and using transit, or walking, more. These are reasonable alternatives to high gas prices, but the transit alternative doesn’t work for most Langley residents. Only about three per cent use transit regularly, as there are few bus routes and most do not go quickly to places that most Langley residents regularly travel to. The oil companies come in for some criticism from poll respondents, and while it is not all deserved, the companies do not have completely clean hands. The price of fuel regularly jumps up late at night — for no good reason, other than to force people heading to work in the morning who need gas to pay more. The prices almost always fall by four to five cents a litre by the noon hour. Those polled say oil companies often raise prices before long weekends — and this too does happen on occasion. Another area where oil companies reap unconscionable profits involves premium grades of gasoline. While U.S. oil companies tend to charge 10 cents a gallon more for premium, in Canada, the price difference is 10 cents a litre — or about 38 cents a (U.S.) gallon. They clearly take advantage of people who do not pay attention to the difference between a litre and a gallon. If government wasn’t so complicit in keeping gas prices high, it might be worthwhile to ask it to be more vigilant about some of the obvious unfairness in pricing. But when it comes to gas and diesel prices, all the players, including all levels of government, have dirty hands.

Abolish school boards they
Local school boards serve little or no purpose and should be abolished. There is no real point in marking an ‘X’ beside any candidate’s name who is running for a spot in school board elections this fall. For all intents and purposes, voters made their choices regarding who will make decisions on education issues in the provincial election last year. Local school boards, as they are currently constituted, have power over a minuscule portion of their total budgets. They do not set the curriculum. They do not negotiate with employees. However, they must deal with the ramifications of decisions made by the real power brokers in provincial education matters, Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Peter Fassbender. We don’t believe anything would change in this regard if there was a different political party in charge in Victoria. It’s sad to watch well-meaning, intelligent people, who have been elected as trustees, have their hands tied and be forced to take all the abuse from frustrated local parents and taxpayers. — Parksville-Qualicum Beach News

‘Bad people’ cost taxpayers plenty Editor: I agree with letter writer Heidi Cook (The Times, May 22) about “bad people” dumping garbage. One year ago, while walking our dog, I witnessed two men dumping building materials from a pickup truck. When I confronted them, I was informed it was their property, to be developed in the future. The product they were dumping included hazardous material, such as gyproc board and a five-gallon pail labelled “hazardous,” as well as adhesives, metal, aluminum, lumber and partial tubes of silicone. I watched as they returned to a nearby housing development, to load the truck with more material to dump. I recorded the licence number of the truck, and the cellphone number of one individual involved. I delivered the photos and a letter outlining the proceedings to Councillor David Davis at his farm. He visited the site in question, and was very concerned. He presented my letter and photos to council, and then arranged to meet me and the bylaw officer at the site. After seeing this mess, recognizing it was on Langley Township property (a road
allowance), and knowing I could identify the person responsible, if charges were laid, the Township bylaw department chose not to take action. I understand it was related to the fact that the development was being done by a numbered company. Here is the result of the inability to enforce our bylaws. Several days later, two Township employees arrived with a large dump truck and a front end loader to clean up this mess. They worked like beavers to get the work done, and this is much appreciated by all the neighbours. There were two employees with a dump truck and a front end loader. They spent three and one-half hours at the site. I estimate this cost $800. A dump truck driver took the material to the transfer station to be correctly disposed of. This cost at least $200. This is a total of at least $1,000, which is a very small amount in the overall Township budget. But it is a cost to taxpayers. It is time we put some teeth in bylaws such as this, and enforce them to the fullest. If not, let’s just delete the bylaw from the books. W. CHRISTIANSEN, LANGLEY
Ward system needed Editor: Re: “Long list of Township concerns,” (The Times, May 22). One desperate change we need is to move to a ward system, just like the federal and provincial elections. The “at large” system we have now favours re-election of incumbents, as most residents do not know which way any councillor voted on any particular policy. Under a ward system, Fort Langley, Willoughby,Brookswood/Fernridge and Aldergrove ridings would be getting new councillors in November for sure. This would fix most, if not all, of Ann-Michelle De Ruis’ concerns. J. BEAUMAN, LANGLEY

Members of You’ve Gotta Have friends posed for a photo at their Langley City gathering place, before heading off to Fort Langley to take part in a Kindness Connects event on Tuesday. They are working on fostering connections and good will between people, whether friends or strangers, this week.
Editor’s note — May 26 to 30 is ‘Kindness Connects’ week in Langley. Through an initiative by the non-profit organization, You’ve Gotta Have Friends, this week has been dedicated to fostering good will among friends and strangers alike. The week’s celebrations will wind up with a dance at McBurney Plaza on Friday night, May 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. but the hope is the good will it has generated will last all year long. The public was invited to share random acts of kindness they’ve experienced or witnessed, by jotting them down in a short letter. Here are just a few of the examples submitted. The remainder can be viewed on our website at langleytimes. com.
Kindness has way of connecting Editor: We were attending a banquet and the typical door prize winners were being called. To understand this story you need to understand the insane excitement my husband gets around prizes — actually getting anything for free. I have known him to drop by a car dealership, just to get a free coffee. Needless to say, winning is probably next to getting into heaven for him. Around our table we started talking about which prize we would love to get. Our neighbour mentioned that for her it would be the phone they were offering. Her son had just wrecked his phone and she couldn’t see how she could get him another one for a couple of months — an impossibly long time for a teenage boy. Sure enough, our table got called but the number called wasn’t hers. It was my husband’s. Thrilled to the bone, he went up and came back with a beaming face. As he sat back down at our table I could see what was passing through his mind even before he leaned over and whispered what he was thinking. He quietly spoke with the lady and handed over the phone. The best prize for both of us was the look of delighted surprise on her face. SAM H. Editor: I was born with cerebral palsy and am dependent on my scooter (the “Bradmobile”) to get me around. A couple of weeks ago I was on my way to Willow-
brook Mall on my scooter, and I ran over some glass which burst my two front tires. Then, on my way back, I ran into a curb and my two back tires were also wrecked. When my friend Josh heard about it, he called me to say he would check out my wheels the next day. He fixed all my tires and got me back on the road again. This isn’t the first time Josh has helped me out. When he hears I need help with anything, he’s always there. We also have “bro’ time.” Josh and I work on cars together and take road trips. His friendship means a lot to me. BRAD GEDDES Editor: We had tons of fun giving free hugs with You’ve Gotta Have Friends for Valentine’s Day. Although a few people were shy to engage, it was incredible to see the number of people who were stoked about receiving a free hug. We all agreed that we loved the couple from Ontario. They had recently moved from the east and were stretched beyond their limit, settling in and trying to find jobs. They were desperately on a job hunt and had been turned down all day long. And then they saw us as they were driving down Fraser Highway. They quickly parked their car and hopped out for a hug. JESSE HOGAN

Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.
Chapman is coming to LANGLEY ON WED. JUNE 11 TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

ry should never be reduced to victim history, and with the Stó:lo atlas we sought to show the complexity of aboriginal history, and we sought to show that not only are there aboriginal people in Canada’s history, but that Canada is in aboriginal peoples’ histories. “There were times in the past when aboriginal people were victimized (residential schools being a tragic example), and there were times when aboriginal people showed great agency (retaining the masked dance, and continuing to fish salmon, for example). “Knowing that native society was not a Utopia when Europeans arrived does not take away from the importance of learning about the full history of aboriginal people and their relationship with Canadian society. “And of course, as Ernie Crey has reminded me many times, let’s never forget that native rights are not based on race. Rather, they are rights based on prior occupation. And let’s also not forget that it is British and Canadian law that recognizes aboriginal peoples’ inherent rights. “Let’s teach good history to our youth so they can understand the complex relationship between settler society and aboriginal society. Through knowledge comes understanding and through understanding can come reconciliation.” Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Members of the Cycling 4 Diversity team brave a torrential downpour on Friday, riding from Langley Secondary to H.D. Stafford, where the group of educators, politicians and community organizers spoke to 100 students about celebrating and supporting people’s differences. Founder, Ken Herar, cycled 200 km from Victoria to Abbotsford.

In 2011, Ken Herar was told he wasn’t welcome to a Christmas party in Surrey because he was East Indian. “I called up to get two tickets to this party and the woman on the line asked me if I was East Indian. “I told her I was and she said they weren’t allowing East Indians at this party,” Herar recalls. “I thought she was joking.” Here it was 2011, and this discrimination was happening to him. “It hit me right then that racism hasn’t gone away. “We have to be a few steps ahead of it and that’s why we are here today,” Herar told more than 100 H.D. Stafford Middle School students last Friday.

After that incident, Herar created an organization called Cycling4Diversity, in an attempt to deliver a message to students across B.C. about celebrating our cultural existence, but also to encourage dialogue about being inclusive. With the event now in its fourth year, the team of cyclists visited 15 cities and more than 20 schools last week, to speak with students about being inclusive. The team of eight to 10 riders, along with five support staff, rode under a torrential downpour from Langley Secondary to H.D. Stafford on Friday, to deliver that message. Among the riders were LSS teacher, Gurp Mahil, LSS principal, Dawne Tomlinson, Langley Times editor Frank Bucholtz and
Langley City Councillor Dave Hall. “What we are asking is, do one thing to be inclusive,” said Herar. “Maybe someone doesn’t speak English, but try to make a connection.” Don’t make assumptions about people. “I was born and raised here. India is a foreign country to me and I don’t speak the language,” he said. Tomlinson told the crowd of Grade 7 and 8 students that Langley Secondary students have a message for them. “Know that we are very accepting and safe community. We are accepting of what you wear and how you talk,” she said. To learn more go to cycling4diversity.ca.

Golf Challenge ‘not a tournament’ The upcoming Golf Challenge event to support Langley Lodge is not a golf tournament. Organizers have heard there is some confusion surrounding the second annual Golf Challenge to be held on June 8. They want to let people know that this event is not a golf tournament, but a golf skills challenge for players of all ages. On Sunday, June 8, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., the Langley Golf Centre (21550 44 Ave.) will host the fundraiser for Langley Lodge. The event kicks off in the morning, but people are wel-

come to drop by throughout the day to participate. It will take about an hour to complete the course. There will be six activities and following the last one, participants will have a chance to sink a hole-in-one and win a cruise. This event is something for the golf enthusiast but organizers stress that it is a fun event and even those who’ve never golfed are sure to enjoy it. Because of the large number of prizes, no matter what your skill level you could win something.
“We have over $3,500 in prizes over and above the cruise package,” said event organizer, Doug Jensen. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children under 16. Tickets will be available at the Langley Lodge, the Langley Golf and Banquet Centre plus individual vendors and clubs. Those who purchase tickets prior to June 4, will be eligible for early bird draw prizes For more information or to reserve a ticket, call 604-880-6752 or email foundation@langleylodge.org.

Students showcase debating skills A series of youth debates takes place on Saturday at the Township of Langley Civic Facility, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The BC Forensic League will be hosting their annual showcase event, where over 50 of the organization’s students showcase their public speaking skills. The event is primarily run to show the parents of the students how much progress their child has made, but also to encourage awareness of the organization in the local community. “Communications is the key to student development in the new job market. No matter how intelligent or passionate a student is, if they can’t communicate their vision to others, they’re going to struggle in this job market, regardless of the career path they choose,” said Eric Cho, a former student and current instructor at the BC Forensic League. The event this year will consist of showcasing three main public speaking activities: British parliamentary system-style debate, mock trials,
and entrepreneurship business pitches. There will be witty, intense, fast-paced, intelligent debate in the British parliamentary session, where four teams debate on an improvised resolution. For the first time in the organization’s history, it will also be running a mock trial showcase, where the top two law case teams will simulate a real law trial. Finally, those who love the shows Shark Tank or Dragons’ Den will not want to miss the showcase of the organization’s new entrepreneurship program. Students will be pitching their entrepreneurial ideas to a panel of judges, which will promise to be an entertaining, fun portion of the showcase event. The organization says communication is a vital skill that all students should develop for their future careers. The BC Forensic League is an honour society that strives to achieve just that — catalyzing the development of effective communication skills in youth.
The organization competes in debate primarily in the United States, where it has won countless awards at various debate tournaments. However, the BC Forensic League is not restricted to competing in the U.S. The organization also sends its students to many international competitions during the summer, which will include Slovenia this year. Founded in 2010, the organization has been growing each year in both student count and success. The organization recently had to relocate to a new office in Walnut Grove to accommodate the rising number of both students and staff. Saturday’s event is open to all members of the public, and will be attended by the students, their friends and family, local politicians, and other business officials. Organizers say “If you’ve ever been amazed at politicians or business professionals delivering public speeches, wait until you get a chance to see some of these students debate.”
Recycling ambassadors visit Sunday Ambassadors for the BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) will have an interactive exhibit set up at the Fort Langley Model A show, at 9131 King St., on Sunday, June 1. Four student ambassadors are canvassing the province for 17
weeks to interact and educate the public on how to recycle everything in their homes. Due to the success of the BCUOMA program, B.C. now has one of the highest recovery rates in the country. Not only has the association been able to connect
with more program stakeholders and residents of B.C., but the program has also encouraged fellow industry associations to get involved. For more about the program, see www.bcusedoil.com or www.facebook.com/bcuoma.

Portrait Homes wins Diamond Avid Award By Kerry Vital
Local builder Portrait Homes is garnering nation-wide attention for their commitment to customer service. “We are once again honoured to announce that Portrait Homes is the proud recipient of the 2014 Avid Diamond Award for the best new home customer experience in Canada,” says Portrait Chief Operating Officer Dave Wallace. “Our entire team works exceptionally hard at creating a stellar customer

We were quite pleased to see a score of 91-plus per cent willingness to refer and wish to thank all of our customers for choosing to live in a Portrait community!” The Avid Awards recognize North American companies that provide excellent customer service to their homeowners. Portrait also won an Avid Gold Award for Best Customer Experience in British Columbia, and has taken home Avid Awards in the past for their customer service, including an

Forge Properties’ Royce features West Coast-style architecture, spacious decks and terraces, gourmet kitchens and luxurious bathrooms. Perfectly situated in White Rock, Royce is close to shopping, dining and recreation opportunities.
Gorgeous views at Forge Properties’ Royce By Kerry Vital
Inspired by White Rock’s stunning scenery, Forge Properties’ Royce is an elegant addition to the neighbourhood, with plenty of curb appeal as it moves into the final cladding stage. Offering spacious homes and a prime location, Royce has proven incredibly popular. “We like to think of it as a true White Rock landmark,” says project marketing manager Brandon Trent. “It’s a one-of-a-kind building with West Coast architecture featuring a blend of modern and natural materials, including B.C. timber posts.” The development takes full advantage of the location. “The building is designed to cascade towards the ocean and maximize stunning ocean views over top of a lush landscaped courtyard,” Trent says. Each home has an expansive terrace or
patio, affording beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean or over the courtyard. Inside, oversized windows and nine-foot ceilings in the main living areas add to the sense of spaciousness. Gourmet kitchens feature floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and distinctive quartz countertops, complemented by an integral Carrera marble backsplash. The space is lit by under-cabinet task lighting, pot lights and chic pendants over the kitchen island. “These kitchens live like a single-family home,” says Trent. The luxurious bathrooms are spa-like and relaxing, with quartz countertops, recessed pot lighting and large-format porcelain tile with mosaic-style polished marble accents. The ensuite features a walk-in shower, separate soaker tub (most homes) with largeformat marble tile flooring with a mosaic herringbone-style marble accent. Homeowners at Royce will have access to The Royce Club, an amenities space with a fireside lounge with kitchen area and library, and a fully equipped fitness centre with yoga studio. Venturing off the property you’ll find everything you need, from shopping and dining to leisure and recreation opportunities.
Combined with the gorgeous homes, Royce has something for everyone. “With so many great floorplans to choose from, both singles and couples can find a home at the right size to fit their lifestyle with a true White Rock address,” says Trent. Royce was the recipient of four Georgie Awards earlier this year, which honour the best in British Columbia’s residential
construction industry. Homes at Royce start at $299,900. For more information, visit www.royceliving.com, call 604-538-8028 or visit the Presentation Gallery at 14855 Thrift Avenue, open daily between 12 and 5 p.m.

Jumpstart allowed boys to keep playing GARY AH U J A Ti me s Spo r t s
Growing up, sports were always a big part of Renee Doucette’s life. But when she moved to B.C. from Alberta in 2000 as a single mother with her three young sons Ryan, Ritchie and Reagan — who were between the ages of five and eight — times were tough. The boys’ father battled drug addiction which led to the couple breaking up and Renee moving west to start over. With their father not involved in their lives and moving to a place where they had no family, things were not easy. “Needless to say, life was quite a bit of a struggle for us,” Renee said. “And it always has been. “It took me a little while to get back to work and to get back in the swing of things after moving here. “We had what we needed to get by and that was it; there wasn’t room for anything extra. There was not even $5 to put towards sports.” With no registration cost to join a flag football league, she signed up all three boys. But eventually it was going to cost money to keep her kids in organized sport and Renee knew the values she learned from playing as a child. Force a force at U15 club championships GARY AHUJA Tim es Sports
There would be no heartbreak in this year’s national championship game. “Our guys were just so hungry, they did not want that feeling of losing again,” said Dan Johnson, the coach of the Force Volleyball Club’s U15 boys team. “They worked so hard through the year and were really focused.” And that hard work and focus paid off when the team took top spot at the U15 club volleyball national championships, which were held in Regina May 17 to 19. Thirty-two teams took part. The final saw Force lose the first set to the Manitoba Winmen and then lose one of their

Setter Zechariah Johnson was named tournament MVP while Trent King (right-side) and Philip Stahl (middle/left-side) were first team all-stars. Last season, the team lost just once: in the national championship game. “We told the boys remember how this feels,” Johnson explained. “And we made the commitment to come back in 2014 as champions.” To prepare for this season, Johnson and assistant coach Ryan Hofer entered their U15 squad in U16 tournaments, as
well as a few U17/U18 events. “We tried to push the boys so they wouldn’t be complacent,” Johnson said. And the team responded by winning one of the U16 events and finishing third in another. They were also seventh in one of the U18 events. At nationals, the Force got a measure of revenge, beating Alberta’s Canuck Stuff along the way. That was the team which beat them in the 2013 championship game. The team is made up of players from Langley, Surrey and Abbotsford, including six players from Langley Christian and Langley Fundamental, fierce rivals during the school year.
Blitz finish fifth Morton unbeatable The Fraser Valley Volleyball Club Blitz showed they may have been ranked a little too low to start the club volleyball championships. World Cup show jumping returned to Langley’s Thunderbird Show Park last week as the facility welcomed competitors from around the world to their 41st season opener, The Canadian Premiere. And on Sunday, it was a Canadian who triumphed in the $25,000 International Gems Grand Prix as Langley’s Brian Morton

held the lead for all but two rounds in a packed field of riders representing five nations. After six years together, Morton and his 17 year-old Selle Francais gelding continue to deliver. “I think he’s as good as he’s ever been, I just have to manage him and what shows we go to,” explained Morton. “That’s one of the things that is wonderful about Thunderbird, the footing is so good that it’s an easy place to jump an older horse — and Spitfire has had a lot of great results here because of that.”

The Walnut Grove Grade 11 student finished with 4,506 points to place second in the heptathlon at the B.C. high school track and field provincial championships, the second straight year she has placed second. “I would have loved to get gold, but it was a good start to the season in heptathlon,” Buckingham said. “But this is just the starting point (for the heptathlon season).” She improved by 306 points after scoring 4,200 points at the 2013 provincial championships. Buckingham was first in the high jump (1.62m) and javelin (41.54m), fourth in the long jump (5.07m), 800m (2:24.14) and shot put (8.96m), fifth in the 200m (27.70) and seventh in the 100m hurdles (17.08). Last year, she won a pair of bronze medals in the long jump and in the 4x400 relay. But the heptathlon is where her heart is. “I do love all the events instead of just doing one,” explained the 16-year-old. “You get to experience everything.” Buckingham also represented Canada at the world youth championships in Ukraine last summer, something she called “one of the best experiences ever.” ••• Langley Fundamental’s Hannah Beaton was sixth in the heptathlon with 4,007 points. She had won bronze in the event at the 2013 championships with 3,938 points. Beaton was first in the shot put (10.11m), second in the javelin (36.02m), fifth in both the 800m (2:29.95) and the high jump (1.44m), seventh in the long jump (4.67m) and the 200m (27.89) and ninth in the 100m hurdles (17.72).
Blue Jays bats pound the ball The North Langley Blue Jays majors baseball team took home both the top offensive and top defensive team awards. The team was competing at the President’s Cup tournament from May 22 to 25, which was hosted by the Vancouver Minor Baseball Association. The Blue Jays outscored their opponents 49-19 — using great pitching, defence and hitting four outside of the park home runs — and were scheduled to
play for the bronze medal before the final day was rained out. The team went 3-0 to win their pool before losing 8-7 in the semifinals. ••• A pair of Langley athletes helped the Global Kumdo Club finish third at the B.C. Kendo Federation championships. Andrew Kim and James (Jong Seok) Lee were part of the squad that finished third at the competition on May 17.
Kendo is a form of fencing with two-handed bamboo swords. ••• The Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Foundation raised over $54,000 at its fourth annual golf tournament held at the Northview Golf and Country Club last week. The event to date has raised over $145,000 to fund scholarships, bursaries and opportunities for KPU’s student-athletes.

Japanese Knotweed Roadside Control Strategy Japanese Knotweed is an invasive species whose root system has the potential to ruin home foundations, roads, parking lots, sewerage, and water main infrastructure. The Township of Langley is working to eliminate the threat of this invasive plant. You may see markers along various roads identifying where Japanese Knotweed is located. Do not remove the plants or mow these areas. Improper removal of the plant could result in the plant reproducing rapidly or spreading further.
Starting June 1, 2014, this permit can only be obtained from the Township’s Operations Centre, located at 4700 - 224 Street.
The Roads Department is spraying a mild herbicide to control the Japanese Knotweed. The removal process will take several treatments and inspections throughout the year. After the roots are killed, the plant stock will be removed and discarded safely.

public open house Latimer Neighbourhood Plan
On April 29, 2014, Township of Langley Council adopted a new, temporary bylaw to regulate, prohibit, and impose requirements on tree clear-cutting in Brookswood/Fernridge. Bylaw 2014 No. 5071 was enacted on an interim basis so that Council, in consultation with the public, could consider amending the Brookswood/Fernridge Community Plan or creating a permanent tree bylaw. Under the new bylaw, no one (including land owners) can remove more than 8 trees or 20 per cent of the trees on a parcel of land, whichever is less, until the bylaw is repealed.
The Township of Langley is holding an open house to present the draft Latimer Neighbourhood Plan. Residents, property owners, and business owners of the community are encouraged to attend the open house and provide input on the plan. Tree Bylaw Boundary
The bylaw only affects properties in the geographic area outlined in the Brookswood/Fernridge Community Plan (see map) and does not apply to land within the Agricultural Land Reserve or land being used as a farm operation. Trees can still be removed if they are blocking sightlines under the Township’s highway and traffic bylaw or if they are in an area approved by provincial regulation for a septic field or water well. Trees may be removed if necessary for the construction of a building, if approved by a development permit, development variance permit, or building permit issued by the Township of Langley. Trees can also be removed if they are hazardous, as certified by an arborist, or in case of an emergency, if certification is received by the Township Engineer within 30 days of the cutting. The prohibition is being taken very seriously and those who are convicted of violating the bylaw by damaging or removing protected trees face a fine of not less than $500 and not more than $10,000 per tree. Specific details and the entire Interim Tree Clear-Cutting Bylaw 2014 No. 5071 can be viewed on the Township’s website at tol.ca, under About the Township/Bylaws/All bylaws. To report a tree cutting incident in the Brookswood/Fernridge area, call the Township’s Tree Protection Hotline at 604.532.7520. You can really hear the engine noise intrude the cabin. It’s not a performance machine like the Nissan GT-R, where you want to hear as much ruckus as you can. However, when cruising at highway speeds – without the lead foot acceleration – my driving partner and I noticed how quiet the cabin is. Wind noise is kept at bay and it’s serene. Furthermore, it was an incredibly blustery day when we took these pint-sized four-doors out. Needless to say, you could feel the swagger of the car at highway speeds. But in its defense, larger vehicles felt the wrath of Mother Nature’s blow, too.

Question of the Week:
While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior. I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra. Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you. Summed up, the Micra is affordable transportation with amiable drivability, an easy-on-the eyes interior and overall a bubbly personality.
Alexandra Straub tests the back-to-basics 2015 Nissan Micra, with a starting sticker price under $10,000. Seems like a good second car option for many families; would you consider it as a possible first car? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer…

It’s Bike to Work Week in B.C. and more and more people are taking up cycling as a commuting option. It’s important for cyclists to pay attention to vehicles turning at intersections. As a driver, before you or one of your passengers open a vehicle door, always check for oncoming cyclists.

Collie Doodle Puppies (Collie x Poodle) Born Feb 26. Mom is a Rough Collie (45 lbs) and Dad is a small Standard Poodle (50 lbs). Both have health clearances (eyes, hips, elbows). 2 very curly black females avail. We have bred this litter special to create the perfect family companion (intelligent, gentle, easy to train, always willing to please, happy indoors and outdoors, good with children and animals, low to no shed). These puppies will not need a heavy hand to train. They are sweet, kind and sensitive puppies. They will be very similar in looks and in nature to the Golden Doodle only smaller, calmer and will mature sooner. We are a 4H (agility, obedience, showmanship) family and our dogs are a part of our home and life and we wish the same for our puppies. Please consider the time and commitment needed to raise a dog and you will have our support and guidance for life. Pups will have shots and deworming. Reduced to $850.
