Provincial government providing $2,000 per veteran for trip to Normandy

British Columbia veterans of the Second World War were recently celebrated at a dinner hosted by Finance Minister Michael de Jong on behalf of the provincial government that marked the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. B.C. veterans were presented with the Ordre national de la Legion d’honneur, France’s highest honour, by Consul General of France in Vancouver M. Jean-Christophe Fleury, on behalf of the president of France. In recognition of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the government of France is bestowing the award on up to 390 Canadian veterans, 66 of whom are from B.C. The provincial government is supporting B.C. veterans who will travel to Normandy, France, to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. B.C. is contributing $2,000 to each travelling veteran, each with an accompanying person, matching funding provided through a federal program that supports veterans travelling to France for the commemoration. June 6, 2014, marks 70

years since allied troops landed along 80 kilometres of beaches in Normandy in 1944. Sir Winston Churchill called Operation Overlord “Undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult that has ever taken place. It involves tides, wind, waves, visibility, both from the air and the sea standpoint, and the combined employment of land, air and sea forces in the highest degree of intimacy and in contact with conditions which could not and cannot be fully foreseen.” FAST bytes • 181,000 British Columbians fought in the Second World War. • 14,000 Canadians landed on Juno Beach on D-Day; some 450 Canadians parachuted inland before dawn. • Approximately 45,000 Canadians lost their lives during the Second World War. Some 5,000 were killed during the Battle of Normandy and 359 on D-Day. To learn more, visit w w w.veterans.gc.ca/eng/ remembrance/history/ second-world-war/historicalsheets/d-day.

Rain didn’t dampen spirits at ball and Cache Creek Mayor John Ranta to Jean and Tom Dall. (Tom is the chief administrative officer for the Village of Clinton.) • The door prize, a weekend for two at the Big Bar Guest Ranch, was won by Don Rose of Clinton. Warner says guests came from all over British Columbia and from as far away as Winnipeg.

Despite the steady rain and cool temperatures, Clinton Annual Ball Committee chair Clare Warner says committee members were very pleased with the 147th Clinton Annual Ball on May 17. “We have received nothing but positive comments about the food, entertainment and music and, of course, the presence of Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon who made a special event even more noteworthy.” The Clinton Memorial Hall doors opened at 5 p.m. and quests, half of whom were in period costumes, started arriving. Twenty minutes later, stagecoach driver Fergus “Fergie” Joslin and his helper Don Pearse, Historic Hat Creek Ranch general manager, arrived with Clinton Mayor Jim Rivett and his wife, Christine. While they waited for the stagecoach to return with Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster and Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart, more folks trickled in and the excitement grew in anticipation of Lt.-Gov. Guichon’s arrival. Just before 6 p.m., the stagecoach showed up with Guichon, her entourage and Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod and Warner.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO RESOURCE ROAD USERS A provincewide, safety-oriented project is underway to standardize two-way radio communications on forest service roads and some resource roads. This project includes standardized signage, new dedicated resource road radio channels and standardized call procedures. • The 100 Mile House Natural Resource District will begin implementing new resource road radio channels on May 31, 2014. • The Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District will begin implementing new resource road radio channels on June 16, 2014. Forest industry workers and other road users using mobile radios must reprogram their radios to incorporate the new resource road channels. Since the transition will be gradual, it’s recommended that road users retain current radio frequencies until they are no longer required. New signs posted on local resource roads indicate which radio channel to use and the calling interval, with drivers required to indicate their direction of travel and their vehicle type. All road users are reminded that forest service roads are not radio-controlled, but radio-assisted. All users should drive safely and according to road and weather conditions. It is strongly recommended that all resource road users exercise additional caution during this transition period. Local resource road safety committees have worked together to implement these changes. More information (including radio communications protocols, radio channels, maps and signs) is available online at: www.for.gov.bc.ca/hth/engineering/Road_Radio_Project.htm If you have questions about this project, please contact a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations office (100 Mile House Natural Resource District at 250 395-7800 or Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District at 250 398-4345), or Industry Canada at 1 800 667-3780.

New roles being explored

Health Minister Terry Lake issued the following statement in recognition of Paramedic Services Week, May 25-31, 2014: “British Columbia’s paramedics are an integral part of provincial health-care teams and deliver a wide range of emergency medical services, including patient transfer, 9-1-1 response, and emergency services. They are also the vital initial contact patients have with our healthcare system in times of crisis or emergency. “Our province’s more

than 3,800 paramedics respond to more than 500,000 calls every year, providing life-saving treatment and transportation for more than 4.4 million B.C. residents in urban, rural and remote regions throughout the province. “Paramedics’ skills and training make them well-suited for a variety of patient-care settings. We are exploring new roles for paramedics in patients’ homes and communities. “In most cases, paramedics already have the skills and our govern-

ment wants to make sure they have as much professional opportunity as possible as we move to new innovative patient-care models in all regions of the province. “The recent tentative, five-year contract with health-care workers, including paramedics, will enable them to better utilize their skills and expand their career opportunities. “Once the agreement is ratified, we will work with paramedics to develop these and other opportunities for them

“Typically at least two-thirds of our guests come from places other than Clinton.” The Clinton Annual Ball is believed to be the oldest continuously running event of its kind in Canada. The

first ball was a weeklong affair held in the lobby of the Clinton Hotel in January 1868. Guests were invited and travelled from afar to attend the ball. The women wore dresses ordered from Victoria, San Francisco and even Europe. The

‘Reveries’ coming to Parkside A pair of Cariboo artists are collaborating for a show in 100 Mile House. The work of Quesnel painters Christa Krisman and Megan Long is on display at Parkside Art Gallery until June 24, with an opening reception slated for May 30 at 5 p.m. The show is called “Reveries” and features abstract acrylic paintings. Parkside Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Clinton Annual Ball has continued without a break since 1868 – surviving two world wars, The Depression and major demographic changes. Two other Lieutenant Governors have attended the ball in the last decade – Iona Campagnolo in 2004 and Steven Point in 2010. 2017 will mark the 150th anniversary of the Clinton Annual Ball and it’s expected to be a special affair to mark an historic event.

to perform an expanded role in our health system in communities throughout the province. This is part of an increased focus on patient-centred care and will reduce 9-1-1 calls, visits to the emergency room – and will utilize the skills of paramedics in areas that can be rewarding for paramedics and patients. “B.C.’s paramedics are health professionals with much to offer the overall health-care system. Finding innovative ways to use their skills will allow for better health-care options

Hip-shaking fun Friskie evening enjoyed by many Forest Grove residents

By Doris E Rufli “What a night!” was the overall consensus of the people attending the Elvis concert at the Forest Grove Community Hall in Forest recently. Randy “Elvis” Friskie and his daughter, Cassandra Friskie, definitely left their mark, wowing everyone from beginning to end. The evening started off with Cassandra singing the Patsy Cline song, “She’s Got You,” right through to Shania Twain’s “I Feel like A Woman.” She is an incredibly talented performer, has a wonderful voice and made every song sound like the original – Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, Cher or the ladies of country. Randy won the audience over in various outfits, belting out song after song and all while performing his dance moves – hip swinging and all. He convinced everyone of his aptitude to sound like the late Elvis Presley, up close and personal. Both performers fully engaged and interacted with their audience. While “Marilyn Monroe” sang “Happy Birthday” to Bob Recknagel who celebrated his 70th birthday that night, “Elvis” joked and teased between songs. He also offered toys to whoever was brave enough to venture up to collect them before walking through the aisles shaking hands. After the intermission, both Randy and Cassandra invited everybody to come up and dance, which was readily followed through by a number of people. Randy subsequently appeared with his guitar to play and sing mainly Beatles songs, which

was very well received. It was a fun evening and the 75 attendees clapped heartily, laughed even louder and danced the night away right to the end at well gone midnight. Doris E Rufli is the Forest Grove correspondent.

Penny Candy for Billionaires performing at free concert June 5

Penny Candy for Billionaires is on their second tour of Western Canada and the band will be stopping in 100 Mile House to play a free show at the Chartreuse Moose on June 5, starting at 4 p.m. Penny Candy for Billionaires is one of the hottest up-andcoming indie bands out of Vancouver having recently been picked up by Sin Agency and Rednyne Productions. The band features

100 Mile House natives and Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School graduates Sean Kennedy and Jake Dawson as band members. Penny Candy for Billionaires wanted to make a point of stopping in the old stomping grounds and providing some free, local-grown entertainment for the community. The band will be accepting donations and 10 per cent of all proceeds, as well as partial sales of our latest EP, Unit 37, will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

LIFE WITH PETS Our pets do look like us You often hear that pets resemble their owners and in some ways that’s happening more and more. Not too many years ago, puppies and kittens frequently died in the first months of life due to infectious disease. Many more were lost to accidents or injury. Professionals involved with dogs such as bird dog trainers or those involved with dogs showing, would not even consider paying for a puppy until it was nearing adulthood because so many succumbed to distemper or parasitic infections as young puppies. Few pets suffered from cancer, as most never lived long enough to get it. Most cats earned their keep by keeping pests under control, a risky occupation that exposed them to parasites, predators and disease. Working and hunting dogs were not routinely vaccinated and, without access to antibiotics, many would not survive infections from what we would today consider to be a minor injury. The same was true for their owners--farming and occupational accidents, polio and even the flu took

countless human lives. With advances in both human and veterinary medicine, many previously devastating diseases are now virtually unheard of due to widespread vaccination. In almost 20 years, I have seen canine distemper only twice in my career--once as a brand-new graduate (my boss at the time had been in practice since the 80’s and even he had never seen a case), and again when I did volunteer work in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Sadly, many animals in that part of the United States are not vaccinated or on heartworm prevention, so these diseases are much more prevalent than in other parts of the U.S. and Canada. In parts of northern Canada, rabies and distemper are maintained in the wild canine population and can be transmitted to unvaccinated domestic animals. Now, however, the picture is changing. And still, pets do resemble their owners. Not too many years ago, few veterinarians would have seen cases of diabetes in pets. It is now relatively

common in both cats and dogs. Pets and their owners are increasingly being diagnosed and treated for chronic conditions that were much less common a few years ago. Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism), heart, kidney and liver disease, torn cruciate ligaments, allergies and arthritis are diagnosed with increasing regularity. There are many schools of thought as to why this parallel shift is being observed. . . Is it simply because our lives are longer and safer than they have ever been before, so less fatal maladies now have opportunity to take hold? Or is it a reflection of our diet in combination with a more sedentary lifestyle for both us and our animals? Other people speculate that increasing exposure to chemicals, pollution or stress may play a role in development of chronic disease. What can pet owners to to help their pets stay healthy? No surprises here--essentially the same advice your doctor gives you for your own health. Choose nutritious foods that are low in fat, salt, artificial flavors and colors. Limit snacks, maintain a healthy body weight and exercise. Get regular check ups, maintain good oral hygiene and spend quality time socializing with others. The best news of all? Studies show that pet owners who make a concerted effort to help their pets lose weight and become healthier usually improve their own health as well. Now that’s a win-win situation!

New life for Shakespeare in zombie remake Director Lisa Dugaro called it an “awesome adventure.” Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students put on a comedic adaptation of a Shakespearean clas-

sic for audiences at 100 Mile House Junior Secondary, May 21-23. Zombeo and Juliet, a gory and modern take on Shakespeare’s great tragedy about two star-crossed lovers

from feuding families, was written by Kathy Martin and Phil Nohl. In it, the Houses of Montague and Capulet have been replaced with the Montgomerys, a family of zombies, and

the Decapitates, zombie hunters. Needless to say, the play drew a lot of laughs. “I thought the students did great work,” says Dugaro. “They all showed a lot of enthusiasm throughout the process, and the audience could tell they were dedicated to their roles. I heard a lot of good feedback as well, especially about [Grade 12 DJ and peer tutor] Kelsey Shearer, [Grade 9 storyteller] Petra Perkins and [Grade 9 student] Jacob Smith

as Ty. “Furthermore, I think it was the student matinee whose audience of Grades 6-12 appreciated the show the most.”
