Rotating strikes continue AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After strike action Monday, Gold Pan City public schools will once again be closed this coming Friday. “We want to ensure we’ve negotiated a fair, longterm package for everyone,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said, adding the provincial government’s commitment is to ensure “security” to parents and teachers. Oakes’ office was visited by dozens of supporters during Monday’s strike action. Organizer, supporter and parent of four Stacey Hanrahan-Denis said her reasoning behind organizing the rally was prompted by negativity aimed at teachers and the Supreme Court bad-faith ruling. “I have two children in the school system and two more who will be attending in the fall,” she said. “We need to support their [teachers] cause.” Hanrahan-Denis encouraged supporters to contact their local MLA and make their voices heard. “Teachers are very important in our children’s lives,” she said. “Government continues to focus on wages, but it’s about class size and composition. They are fighting for our children’s education and need our support.” Oakes said she welcomes feedback and encourages residents to contact her office, noting at the time of the rally her office was closed for lunch. “We want to continue with negotiations,” she said. “We know how much they care about the kids and at the end of the day, that’s what we all want – what’s best for students.” School District 28 is joined Friday, June 6 for continued rotating strike action by: #5 - Southeast Kootenay; #6 - Rocky Mountain; #39 - Vancouver; #40 - New Westminster; #48 - Sea to Sky; #49 - Central Coast; #62 - Sooke; #67 - Okanagan Skaha; #72 - Campbell River; #74 - Gold Trail; #75 - Mission; #78 - Fraser-Cascade; #82 - Coast Mountains; #85 - Vancouver Island North; #87 Stikine.

Resident hosts meeting to provide arena option WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter In efforts to showcase an option for the arena replacement project, Gold Pan resident Ernest Gamache hosted a meeting last week in efforts to clarify his proposal. Gamaches vision incorporates an NHL sized arena using the

existing surface of arena 1, adding extra square footage to reach the desired size. The east wall of this new arena 1 would be the curling rink and the west will be arena 2 combining all three structures with a refurbished lobby. Reconstruction would occur in stages and the finished project would have 1,000 seats on each

side of the new arena 1, with a lounge at the front end capable of seating 500 people, as well as 800 additional seats in arena 2. At the end of construction the only thing left of the original arena 1 would be the ice surface. With this plan Gamache said he hopes to create a strong sense of

community involvement, adding he is willing to help keep costs down by providing equipment, an excavator and a bobcat. Gamache also spoke to trade students and hopes for volunteer opportunities. Voting for the arena replacement project on whether Quesnel citizens are in favour of borrowing up to $7.5

Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department recognized

The Cariboo Regional District’s (CRD) Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) received a visit from a local resident a couple of weeks ago during their regular practice night. The resident wanted to thank the department for the training provided to his granddaughter at school. He indicated the training which had been provided by the department at Barlow Creek Elementary, had saved her life. He explained that his granddaughter was at home and noticed black smoke above her head. She crawled to tell her dad and then got out of the house while her father was able to extinguish the fire. The child told her family that she knew how to react as the fire department had come to her school and taught her what

to do in the event of a fire. “I am very proud of the dedication and knowledge the Barlow Creek VFD has demonstrated through this fire safety education program at the elementary school,” CRD Electoral Area C Director John Massier said. “Fire Chief Tom Maxwell, and the entire department should be very proud of their accomplishments, knowing their efforts have truly made a difference in our community and in particular, to this family.” “Our department teaches the kindergarten class Stop, Drop and Roll and the Grade three class the Fire Safety House Program each year,” Barlow Creek Fire Chief Tom Maxwell said. “We are also

Is Coming to Size You Up

Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Chapman is coming to QUESNEL ON TUES. JUNE 10 TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.”

Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

Tough number to swallow “When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses.”

– Shirley Chisholm

I

f we’ve learned anything from the Great Recession, it’s that the country’s highest-paid CEOs will always survive – and thrive – no matter what happens to the economy. According to an annual review by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the average compensation amongst Canada’s top 100 CEOs was $7.96 million in 2012. The average Canadian workers’s salary was $46,634. Do a little math and that works out to CEOs making about 171 times the earnings of the average worker. Here’s something to chew on: by the time the average Canadian worker was done lunch on Jan. 2 of this year, the top CEOs had already made their equivalent yearly wage. Kind of makes you want to lose your lunch. It’s not that we begrudge executives being well compensated, it’s just that the gap between “us” and “them” continues to expand at a rate that is far beyond fair. CEO salaries have risen 73 per cent between 1998 and 2012. The average Canadian worker: six per cent. And despite the intense scrutiny CEO salaries have come under since 2008, there doesn’t seem to be any clear relationship between CEO salaries and corporate performance, according to report author Hugh Mackenzie. But maybe we Canadians shouldn’t complain; American CEOs make 257 times the average worker’s wage in that country. – Autumn MacDonald

A secret for the sweet tooth

ast week my daughter called me after school and asked if she and her older friend could go for coffee at Starbucks. Since Daisy is only turning 11 next month, I found the request rather odd. “Why would you want to go there?” I asked. “You don’t drink coffee.” “I know,” she said. “But I’ve been dying to try the Cotton Candy Frappuccino.” I’d never heard of such a thing, but whatever it was, it sounded gross to me. An hour later I met them there. To my surprise, the place was crawling with kids, all sitting around drinking their pricey beverages, some of them nibbling on rice crispy squares, cookies or cake pops. Daisy was almost finished her creamy pink drink but insisted I take a sip. Just as I suspected, it was gross. “When did they start making these?” I asked the barista, as I looked at the menu board, trying to find it. “It’s not up there,” she replied. “It’s from the secret menu.”

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note “It’s on the Internet,” added Daisy’s friend, who was drinking a Fruity Pebbles Frappuccino. “We’ll show you.” According to StarbucksSecretMenu. net, the vast array of extra beverage choices are mostly created by Starbucks fans, and as people create more ideas they can submit them to the website or Facebook fan page. The drinks are then “skillfully concocted by Starbucks baristas and connoisseurs from all around the world.” “The Cotton Candy Frap is really popular,” the employee told me. “But there are tons we’ve never heard of or haven’t made often, so it’s good to come in with the online recipe. We can read it off your phone.” Interesting. I had no idea.

Even though the secret menu items invariably cost more, kids seem to be having extra fun with their special orders by posting pictures of them on social media. From a business and marketing standpoint, it’s truly brilliant. From a parenting standpoint it’s expensive and unhealthy. “I think it’s fine in moderation,” David said. “Obviously I wouldn’t want my kids ordering this stuff daily.” No kidding. I know I’m old, but I still remember going to the corner store on the weekends and getting a giant freezie for a mere five cents. We only had a few types to choose from: blue, purple, orange or white. There was no secret menu, there were no special orders and if it had occurred to us to take pictures of the darn things, we wouldn’t have had anywhere to post them except our bedroom walls. But regardless of the simplicity of the time and the small price to pay, they were still a sweet treat we’d get excited about. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. Whether this new trend was started by customers or the company, it’s become a genius marketing ploy to engage and hook the younger generation, and not one that I would have imagined working out. I’ve always looked at coffee baristas as having a hard enough job as it was with all the different beverages they have to prepare on the fly. Now they have to cater to a neverending recipe list they don’t physically have on hand? “It’s the way things are going now,” my friend David said. “There’s a site called HackTheMenu. com that includes a ton of fast food restaurants catering to the weird stuff customers request.” I looked it up and immediately checked out the secret menu for McDonald’s since I worked there for three years as a teenager. Apparently we can now get things like the Monster Mac, which is eight meat patties in one bun, or the Land, Sea and Air Burger, which is a combination of a Big Mac, Filet-O-Fish and McChicken. I shouldn’t use the word again, but I’m going to. Gross.

Is this the best option available? Editor: I attended a gathering on May 21 to listen to Mr. Gamache explain his proposal for replacement of the main arena in Quesnel. I would say the majority there were impressed with his idea and wondered why the Joint Committee (City/CRD representatives) have not taken time to look more closely at it. His design, when finished, would have 200 seats, a walking track, viewing areas, a cafeteria, without negatively impacting the curling rink

Letters to the Editor

or access to LeBourdais Park. Most importantly, this would all be done at far less expense – in other words, no referendum needed. Mr. Gamache has put forward an idea that has merit. It should be investigates not brushed aside. It has been said that renovating the existing building would not be in the best interest of the taxpayers because we would just be left with a 60-year-old building. Mr. Gamache’s proposal is not renovation. Using today’s terms, it is the reconstruction of a

facility, on the original site, done in stages. Similar projects have taken place around our province. Pitt Meadows is one example. Here’s a quote from the information they have on their website: “The city-owned arena facility had undergone a major transformation since being acquired in February 2009. Nearly three years after, construction is now complete and the arena is looking brand new. Repairs to the fire and life safety systems and building envelope are

complete, upgrades to the mechanical and HVAC systems have been made and the interior substantially refurbished thanks in part to $1 million in funding received through the Government of Canada’s Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program. The renovation, with accelerated phases, took more than two years to complete at the cost of more than $8.6 million - less than half of what it would have been to replace the three sheet arena.” This type of upgrading

and renovation has been done in several areas of the province and the information is readily available if one wants to find it. Why not here? My concern is that the majority of the public knows little regarding this issue. We hear via Facebook that user groups attended a meeting this week with the Joint Committee and the architects – reviewed a design already done, so it was basically a show and tell with the committee looking for approval. That information will be shared with the public at

an open house May 29 where the architect will also be in attendance. I encourage the public to attend these open house presentations – ask questions of your elected officials. Is this the best option available? Are there other options – how about Mr. Gamache’s idea of reconstruction? Taxpayers like options. This is a substantial investment for Quesnel. True faith is a love of God and obedience to his teachings

time by following an owner’s manual, by following road signs, etc. It shouldn’t be a negative thing. It isn’t a judgment thing. It’s

a trust thing between you and God. In other words, if you obey God, you are trusting him, if you trust him, you

believe that what he says is best for you and others. That is true faith. That is what makes you a Christian.

The alternative is belief in his existence, like you believe in the chair you are sitting on. True belief is obedience.

The only reliable way to know what he asks us to do is to read the Bible. If all you do is follow your own rules that are

in conflict with the Bible you really don’t believe in God. Ken Cyr is pastor of Maple Park Alliance Church in Quesnel.

A deal worth changing for.

Well, Satan and his demons believe in him and hell is their destiny (James 2:19). So what does it mean to love God? John 14:15 says If you love me, you will obey what I command. I am seeing lots of evidence in the scriptures that the primary way to love God is to obey him. This is interesting, because you see a lot of people who say they are Christians, based only on belief. But belief alone doesn’t cut it. Obeying is the crucial point. It would seem there are a lot of ways we can obey God, but are we doing it? Prayer, worship, church attendance (home churches included), the 10 Commandments, etc. We sometimes see obedience as a negative thing, but we obey people all the

Darby donates

When Carla Hamel and her daughter Darby lost a wonderful friend to cancer, Starla Frazer, Darby decided she would grow her hair with the intention of donating it to the Canadian Cancer Society for the making of human hair wigs for cancer patients. Darby, in spending time with Starla and other friends battling cancer, witnessed their bald look, new hats and wigs during their cancer treatments. “I was amazed at how well Darby received the changes in our friends appearance as they battled through their journey,” Carla said. Through their investigation they discovered Darby’s hair would need to be at least eight inches of growth in order to donate her hair. “Let me add, Darby, who is 10 years old, is a true

tomboy and long hair has been a real ‘pain in her butt’ as she would say,” Carla said. When her hair finally reached the 8-inch mark, family friend Jackie Druet graciously donated her hair styling services, in the Hamel home, to cut and style Darby’s hair and create her new look. “She looks just as beautiful with her short hair style, thanks Jackie,” Carla added. “I am honoured by my daughter’s commitment, generous spirit and patience. Darby and I have also been saving the money from our bottle returns for the past year and donated $150 to the Canadian Cancer Society at Relay for Life. “Well done Darby, may you inspire others to do the same with your caring spirit and pay it forward attitude.”

Sunset Theatre, season premier

Where artists and plays go to grow and first meet an audience Since re-opening to the public as a live theatre in 2006 The Sunset Theatre, located on Wells’ historic Pooley Street, has proudly presented new and developing work by internationally recognized home-grown artists. Originally built in 1934 as a movie house, the Sunset Theatre was also used as a dance hall, gambling hall and even a morgue. It has had a varied and colourful past and the Sunset Theatre continues today to celebrate this spirit of risk and adventure. “Being a launching point for new plays – the place a show first meets an audience – is special,” artistic director, Karen Jeffery said. “It’s special as a producer, and as a theatre-goer. You’re involved at the ground level of something totally new and unique just as it’s finding its feet, just as it’s starting to really take off. I love that. I’m proud to be in the position to be able to offer that opportunity to artists and excited to share the fruits of their hard work.” The Sunset Theatre’s 2014

Summer Season kicks off with a sneak-preview of BITS - a funny and moving “extravaganza of tales, tunes and tangents”, written and performed by comedian/ singer-songwriter Patrick Kearns, which will be performed at the Sunset one night only as a fundraiser for Kearns to help with expenses before heading across Canada on a national tour, which includes a detour back to the Sunset Theatre on July 4 – 5. BITS smells like awesome, goes down like a vodkacocktail out of a twirly straw and leaves a thoughtprovoking after taste. Patrick Kearns is delightfully quirky, heartbreaking and flamboyantly funny all at the same time. See this play. Then see it twice. –Sarah Towle (CBC) BITS by Patrick Kearns plays the Sunset Theatre Saturday June 7 at 8 p.m. For more information, or to read more about our summer season, visit www.sunset-theatre. com. We hope to see you there!

The Sunset Theatre still exudes the flavour and ambiance of its 1930s roots.

Authors Fair a success

Quesnel readers discovered the considerable talents of Northern B.C. writers at the Authors’ Fair held May 24 at the Quesnel Library. There were 29 authors in attendance coming from Quesnel and communities as far away as Smithers and Merritt. Most genres were represented. The authors included those that were traditionally published and those who chose the self-publishing route. Each author donated one of their books to a raffle. Several businesses and the QADAC donated door prizes and an item for the author’s goodie bags. Judging from the delighted laughter erupting from the draw, the raffle was well received and refreshments enjoyed. We will examine the results of the survey collected from the attendees and adjust our future plans. The committee is hoping to repeat this event in other communities and perhaps again in Quesnel. We could make this an all-day event with a program for the authors in the morning and the book sale in the afternoon. Thank you to Beverly Fox, Tracy Bartsh and Lin Weich for their hard work in organizing this event.

Lindy ready for new opportunities For Miss Quesnel candidate 17-year-old Lindy Alec, entering the program was taking a huge step outside her comfort zone, crediting the program for increased self-confidence and improved public speaking skills. One of Alec’s favourite things about being in the Miss Quesnel program is the opportunity to try new things that she probably would never get the opportunity to do otherwise, such as greeting people coming into Quesnel on the Rocky Mountaineer. It has served as a learning opportunity on many different levels for the young candidate including learning the history of her sponsor the Nazko First Nations Band. Alec’s talent will be First Nations art, focusing on drawing. Join all the candidates for speech and talent night July 3 and witness the crowning of 2014’s Miss Quesnel July 5 in Chuck Mobley Theatre.

Shaylee learning new skills

It was a challenge to see what she could accomplish. Shaylee Jack, 16, was encouraged to join the Miss Quesnel program with promises of a wonderful experience and Jack says she is not disappointed. It’s given her the chance to learn new skills, meet interesting people and make new friends through the course of the program. This experience has helped her through the challenges of public speaking and she has become more outgoing overall. Jack’s sponsor, the Lhtako Dene First Nation, has been encouraging and even brought her closer together with her family. Her talent will be beading. With this program Jack has learned just to keep going and trying new things because you never know what could happen. Join all the candidates for speech and talent night July 3 and witness the crowning of 2014’s Miss Quesnel July 5 in Chuck Mobley Theatre.

Congratulations to Quesnel’s hometown hero WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter It came as quite a shock for Quesnel's Landon McGauley when he learned he had won the Pacific Western Brewing Hometown Heroes program. The program was established in 2002 and focuses on helping to support young athletes and community heroes within BC. The program is open to any BC residents 19 years of age or older. When McGauley was 15 he had a passion for mountain biking, but it was an injury at a downhill race, flipping over his handles bars, that would change his life forever. It was clear that this remarkable young athlete was not going to let anything stop him and he soon found a new passion downhill sit-skiing. It was six months to the day after his accident that McGauley took to the slopes trying his hand at his new sport. It was no doubt this inspiring

young athlete’s determination that helped him to win the Hometown hero program last May for Northern B.C. McGauley was nominated as a surprise by a friend initially as a way to encourage sponsorship. On May 2, 19-year-old McGauley was awarded with a $2,000 bursary at a ceremony at the Terminal City in Vancouver headlined by Olympian Denny Morrison. The accomplished skier hopes to put the money towards travel costs and race fees that he requires to practice and get the experience necessary to compete at an elite level, as well as a water ski. "I feel that if I keep pushing myself and try to stay positive

as I can it just seems that crazy things keep happening," McGauley said. His sights are set high and for now there seem to be no signs of slowing down for this young athlete. Over the last season McGauley was staying in Whistler from February – March spending countless hours on the slopes during competitions partnered with training camps every weekend he did not have a race to attend. He finished his stay in Whistler with a bang, competing in nationals and coming in sixth over all. The B.C. Para Alpine Ski Team

had invited McGauley to be a member and after that he started to race, determined to make the Canadian National Para Alpine Ski team and eventually represent Canada in the Paralympics. For now his plans are a little closer to home. In 2015 McGauley will be competing in Prince George at the Canada Winter Games. "I am putting quite a bit of pressure on myself for that one," McGauley said. "I'd like to do really well, its pretty much in my own backyard." Pacific Western Brewing has partnered with the 2015 Canada Winter Games and expanded its Hometown Heroes program to include four rounds, selecting a total of 16 heroes to receive bursaries as an exciting lead up for the games. In each of the rounds four heroes will be selected, one from each major provincial region – Northern B.C., Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island,

and the Okanagan/Kootenays. Any people who have entered in the program and do not get picked in the first round will continue to be eligible in the following rounds. The 16 heroes selected will receive bursaries to help finance the sporting endeavours of these exceptional athletes and community heroes. Applicants can be nominated or apply and must be currently involved in their local sporting community as an athlete or a coach, or an outstanding member of a community mentoring activity. Round two will begin on April 1, round three on Sept. 1, and round four on Jan. 1. Any individual involved in their local sports community and who is hoping to receive a Hometown Heroes bursary will have until the end of January 2015 to apply or be nominated. QYSA takes to the road traveling south WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter As the weather heats up so does the soccer season. Five teams from Quesnel traveled south to participate at the Slurpee Cup a three day tournament in Kamloops; the U12 Boys, U14 Boys, U16 Boys, U12 Girls and U14 Girls. The U14 Girls played hard over the weekend, with their tireless efforts landing the team in third place overall. The girls tied their first three matches of the tournament ending with a

final score of 0-0 against 100 Mile House, 1-1 in the game with Pitt Meadows and 1-1 when they faced off against the team from Terrace. In their last game of the tournament Quesnel was facing the first place team. It was a tough game that ended in a loss for Quesnel, with a final score of 2-0 in favour of Kelowna. Athlete Halle Cada scored the first and only goal for Quesnel’s U12 girls, ending the game against Vernon in a tie 1-1. Although the girls played hard throughout the tournament the other

three matches played over the May long weekend ended in disappointing loses for the U12 girls division, with the girls unable to make their way through the other teams to net a goal. There were some tough loses for the boys teams over the course of the tournament. It seemed they were out matched by their opponents on the field. The teams played hard over the three days but were unable to win any of their matches. Eric Wickham, coach of the U12 boys, felt that even though no wins were claimed by the three

Quesnel boys teams that travelled to Kamloops, they played with and put in a tremendous amount of effort. Though they did not return home with any victories, Wickham believed that the weekend was helpful for the young athletes. He could see improvements in his players over the three days at the Slurpee Cup. Also accompanying the teams from the Quesnel Youth Soccer Association (QYSA) to the Kamloops Slurpee Cup were members Haley Schotel, Kyra Teetzen and Kaitlyn Godsoe. These three accomplished athletes

took the opportunity to play with the European Football School’s (EFS) U17 girls team, along with players from North Vancouver, Squamish, Salmon Arm and Williams Lake. The team did extremely well, taking first place overall and scoring at least four goals each match. The players performed exceptionally well, and EFS coach Saibo Talic was pleased with the quality of the Quesnel players. The teams took to the road the following weekend, May 24-25, for the second meeting of the Cariboo Youth Soccer

League in 100 Mile House. At the 100 Mile House games the U14 girls division returned home triumphant with a final score of two wins and no losses, winning games against Williams Lake and 100 Mile House teams. Quesnel claimed another two victories over the weekend when the U12 girls played and won the games against Williams Lake and 100 Mile House. The next games for Quesnel Youth Soccer League will be held in Prince George Sunday May 31.

Keeping bothersome bugs at bay Warm sunshine, fresh air and grass that’s finally green again: it’s the perfect combination to lure us outside after a long winter. But the shooing and swatting always seems to start after just a few minutes outdoors and can quickly turn enjoying nature into aches, pains and itches. Bugs that bite and sting do more than ruin summer fun, they can cause skin irritations and serious allergic reactions, spread diseases and can lead to infections. The experts at a leading pest control company offer the following tips to keep these bothersome bugs at bay: • Mosquitos, bees and wasps are often attracted to dark colours. Stick to light coloured clothing, but stay away from

bright or floral prints, which look like delightful meals for pollinators. Also avoid tight clothing, as most pests can puncture right through fabric. • Eliminate standing water. Mosquitos thrive during the summer months because they have plenty of access to moisture to breed – often right in your backyard. This includes pet water bowls, plant pots, ornamental pots and bird baths. Reduce as many sources of stagnant water as possible. • Work to keep these pests outdoors. Install window screens and seal any cracks and crevices in your home’s foundation to help prevent easy entry. If your property is prone to wasps, work with your pest control provider to develop a comprehensive management f lowers program, which should run from spring & greenhouses through late fall. Contact your pest management provider if pests start to wear out their welcome this season. –newscanada

How to manage those pesky summer uninvited guests Summer is a season for gathering with friends and family and for enjoying the great outdoors. Don’t be surprised, however, if pests arrive uninvited. Warming temperatures lead to all kinds of eco-activity and according to the experts at a leading pest control company the most likely pests you’ll encounter this summer are ants, mosquitos, stinging pests, ticks and rodents.

are beneficial insects and typically do not sting unless provoked, so try to remain calm if they are flying around you. Frequently inspect for nests around your home and in empty garbage cans. Look for wax cells, sometimes papery or made of clay or mud and they may be located in wall voids, under slabs, along eaves or in soil. Position flowering plants away from places you frequent, such as doorways, walkways, decks and mailboxes.

Ants There are more than 47 different species of ants in Canada, ranging from carpenter ants (which are the most populous species capable of major structural damage) to European fire ants, whose painful bites can cause serious allergic reactions and can kill small mammals. As with most pests, the best way to deter ants is to limit their access to nesting sites, food and water. Clean up spilled food and drinks immediately, and keep food stored in air-tight containers, especially during outdoor picnics. Once ants find a food source, they leave behind an invisible pheromone trail for others to follow. Check your home’s foundation for cracks and seal any openings, paying pay close attention to doors and windows. It is also important to check your attic and crawl spaces for leaks and condensation. Finally, don’t forget overgrown tree branches and bushes brushing against your home since they provide “highways” for the ants.

pests and experts predict increased populations this summer due to the unusually high amount of snow during the past winter. Not only are mosquitoes annoying due to their constant presence, buzzing sounds and irritating bites, but they can also transmit diseases, including West Nile virus, malaria and yellow fever. To keep these pests at bay, always apply appropriately registered insect repellent before heading outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when they are most active. Always read the label of insecticide repellent prior to use. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, regardless of size or amount. To help reduce activity around your home, get rid of any standing water and dense vegetation.

Ticks and Rodents Not as common around the home, ticks are more prevalent in woodlands, fields, and in areas with shrubbery and tall grass. Experts suggest maintaining a well-kept yard, especially along the edges of your property. When venturing out into nature, wear long-sleeved shirts and light coloured pants so you can easily spot these bloodsucking pests. The primary hosts of ticks are small mammals, particularly rodents. HOME of the MONTH PLAN NUMBER 2-3-752 IDEAL FOR A GROWING FAMILY This attractive two-storey home, with a glass-fenced covered deck that wraps around part of the front and side, would be ideal for a growing family, since it includes three bedrooms on the main living floor, plus room for a fourth on the ground floor. The covered entry leads into a foyer with the den, with a cupboard to store the hot-water tank and furnace as well as built-in shelves to the right. On the left is the U-shaped staircase to the main floor, with storage tucked beneath the stairs. Still in the foyer, a coat closet is located opposite to a doorway to the double garage. Upstairs, the great room boasts a vaulted ceiling, plus French doors on to the covered deck and a gas fireplace flanked by windows. The open space in the stairwell is safely surrounded by railings. In the kitchen and dining area, the ceilings rise to nine feet. These rooms share sliding doors to a patio overlooking the back garden, making outdoor dining an easy choice during the warmer months. The kitchen’s U-shaped counter configuration will save many steps for the cook, and a large pantry will provide extra storage. A three-seat eating bar provides an ideal spot for quick meals and snacks. The master suite overlooks the front garden and includes a spacious walk-in closet and a four-piece en-suite with a soaker tub and a glassed-in shower stall. A bookcase just inside the doorway will provide storage space for bedtime reading. The secondary bedrooms, both looking out to the back garden, share a three-piece bath. The linen cupboard and laundry room are located near the bedrooms, along with a small storage space. On the ground floor, a fourth bedroom has been planned for future family growth, in addition to a secondary suite. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding, vertical board-and-batten and decorative woodwork in the gables, and stone-based pilasters flanking the entrance. This home measures 48 feet wide and 9 feet deep, for a total of 1,421 square feet. All ceilings rise to nine feet, except where otherwise indicated. Plans for design 2-3-752 are available for $595 (set of 5), $680(set of 8) and $748 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. headroom and some room to stretch out either piloting or co-piloting the Micra. Under hard acceleration, primarily from the 4-speed automatic, the Micra is quite vocal. You can really hear the engine noise intrude the cabin. It’s not a performance machine like the Nissan GT-R, where you want to hear as much ruckus as you can. However, when cruising at highway speeds – without the lead foot acceleration – my driving partner and I noticed how quiet the cabin is. Wind noise is kept at bay and it’s serene. Furthermore, it was an incredibly blustery day when we took these pint-sized four-doors out. Needless to say, you could feel the swagger of the car at highway speeds. But in its defense, larger vehicles felt the wrath of Mother Nature’s blow, too.

While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior. I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra. Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you. Summed up, the Micra is affordable transportation with amiable drivability, an easy-on-the eyes interior and overall a bubbly personality. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Question of the Week: Alexandra Straub tests the back-to-basics 2015 Nissan Micra, with a starting sticker price under $10,000. Seems like a good second car option for many families; would you consider it as a possible first car? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer…

Safety Tip: It’s Bike to Work Week in B.C. and more and more people are taking up cycling as a commuting option. It’s important for cyclists to pay attention to vehicles turning at intersections. As a driver, before you or one of your passengers open a vehicle door, always check for oncoming cyclists.

Canadian Jaguar XK Register member Vito Donatiello teaches a teen how to drive his manual-shift 1966 Jaguar E-Type coupe. Around 40 young drivers recently spent a day depressing the clutches in an array of classic cars and grabbing at their manual gear sticks. Today’s teens rarely have access to manual transmissions – more than 90 percent of new cars sold in North America are equipped with automatic transmissions. This trend greatly affects the skill set required to drive classic cars, which are commonly equipped with manual transmissions. So the Hagerty Driving Experience was created in a partnership between the Hagerty insurance company, the Canadian XK Jaguar Register and Canadian Classic MG Club.
