Construction on Main Street slated for August By Treena Mielke The Main Street of Rimbey will see some upheaval later this summer, but the end result will be worth the disruption. Earlier this spring, the provincial government made the announcement that the province would be planned to rehabilitate highways in rural Alberta.
Highway 53 which runs through Rimbey is one of the highways designated for upgrades. Melissa Beebe, acting CAO for the town of Rimbey said Alberta Transportation plans to start the work in mid to late August. A paving crew will start on Secondary Highway 771 to the Keyera Gas Plant and

then move into the town. Work will continue 29 kilometers west to the Clearwater County border. Cost for the project is $8 million. The 20 km farthest west along Highway 53 will be made up of recycled materials. The asphalt now in place will be ground and put back into the new pavement. The furthest nine kilometers of highway will
also include deep reclamation processes. The pavement is to be monitored and measured annually for smoothness, strength and maintenance costs. Beebe said signs and detours will be in place during the construction to ensure traffic continues to flow smoothly.

OPINION
The pros and cons of technology There are times when I think I like my computer. And then there are times I hate it so much I want to whine and cry like a child whose typewriter has been taken away. Yesterday was one Treena Mielke them. On The Other Side My computer was not only acting up, it was playing dead. It would not send messages, pictures or stories anywhere. Nothing. It would not help me with my work one little bit. It was causing my blood pressure to soar and make me think longingly of my good friend, whom I have dropped as a bad choice. The cigarette! “Have you tried shutting it off and re-starting?” at least 250 well meaning people advised me. “Oh no, what a good idea,” I reply sarcastically, but only in my mind. I didn’t want to annoy anyone who may actually be able to help me. “Yes,” I say meekly. “Still not working.” “Well, it seems to be an Internet problem,” says someone else, who really didn’t want to be bothered with my issue. Sighs on both ends of the phone. They hang up. I hang up. I sigh again. A little more desperately this time. I finally ended up loading all my stories and pictures on a memory stick and sending them to the FTP site in Red Deer via my co-workers computer. Her computer is situated a hop, skip and a jump from mine, in other words, it is in the other office.
For some reason, it worked fine. Weird. As I was saying, as far as technology and me go—the jury is still out. But, I am the first to admit it does have its good points. I was born in the days when the marvel in our little old ‘house on the prairie’ was the telephone. I know I am dating myself, but ‘oh, well.’ I’m serious here. I remember the day it happened. I had gone to school like always, and when I came home, some guy from AGT (that’s what they were called in those days), came in and attached this box like thing with a receiver attached to one side and this wind up crank thing on it to the wall in our living room. They called it a telephone. Needless to say, I was intrigued and, of course, grateful to Alexander Graham Bell for coming up with such an invention! I immediately phoned my sister. In reality she lived so close I probably could have yelled at her, but I wanted to see if the thing actually worked.
I rang her ring. Three shorts! Lo and behold, she answered. Actually, so did almost all of the rest of the town. Silently, of course. Listening in on a party line was rude, but lots of people did it anyway. In those days it was the short hand of gossip. I thought about that old phone the other day, when I used my somewhat obsolete Blackberry to snap a picture of my daughter and her husband. And I thought of it again, when my husband showed me a video of two of our grandsons on the golf course taken with his phone. It’s times like that when I feel all grateful and happy about technology and the fact that we have these phones that can take pictures and videos, and even receive emails. But, the other times when the computer’s brain or whatever it is inside there that makes it work decides to go AWOL, I think about the good old days when a phone was a phone and a computer was a…….typewriter. And, just for a crazy, insane moment, I want those days back!
Input will serve as a blueprint for a vibrant rural Alberta by Verlyn Olson Special to Rimbey Review Rural Alberta contributes more than $77 billion annually to Alberta’s and Canada’s economy, and with smart planning and coordinated programs and services, rural Alberta will thrive. The Rural Economic Development Action Plan is a new initiative designed to build on the significant efforts made in the past to support economic activity in rural Alberta. The goal is to ensure that rural communities continue to flourish. An MLA task force including Hector Goudreau, Jacquie Fenske, Ken Lemke, Bridget Pastoor, and myself has been working to keep this initiative moving. Earlier this spring, we held a series of stakeholder roundtable discussions in Athabasca, Fairview, Edson, Olds, Medicine Hat, Leth-
bridge, Vermilion and Camrose. We talked, and mostly listened, to the suggestions from economic development organizations, area associations and citizens about how to best address the economic needs of our rural communities. We are all from rural Alberta and know the joys and challenges first-hand. Stakeholders were asked for input and direction about how Alberta’s rural communities can build on five key areas: industry and business development; financial and capital access; workforce development; regional coordination; and economic infrastructure capacity. We want to ensure that we have the right resources in place and that our current investments in rural communities are being spent wisely. During the discussions, our stakeholders told us how essential it is for government, industry and
communities to work together to ensure existing programs and services are coordinated so that they are delivered effectively and efficiently. We also heard a successful Action Plan has to be grounded in a long-term vision for rural Alberta, and that the plan needs to recognize the unique circumstances in different regions of the province. With those thoughts in mind, I challenged participants to think about what short term actions we can take today that would facilitate economic development, as well as what actions could yield long-term benefits for rural Alberta 30 years down the road. What are the “gamechangers” that will help stimulate growth? It was clear that high-speed Internet is seen as an important tool to support rural economic development.
And, a key issue on top of many people’s minds was the need to focus on attracting and retaining people to our rural communities, especially the next generation. Those efforts will help address the need for skilled labour as well as support rural Alberta’s long-term sustainability. I’m very grateful to the stakeholders who took time out of their schedule to attend these discussions and provide their input. The next step will be to use this information to help finalize the Action Plan, which we expect to release later this year. I am looking forward to sharing those details and then putting that plan into action as we work with our community partners to help keep building Alberta. Verlyn Olson is the Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development

Rimbey town council busy with new spring projects By Treena Mielke Donation A new AED defibrillator has been donated to the town from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The new defibrillator and the one that is now in the curling lounge will be placed in the community centre for easy access. Aquatic Centre Cleaning and visual inspection of the Rimbey Aquatic Centre has increased and a maintenance contract has been signed with Flaman Fitness. Replacement parts are due to arrive soon for the elliptical machine. New drains have been installed in the change rooms to help keep water off the floor. Two new hot tubs have also been installed and new cabinet doors placed in the reception area. Apex Landscaping is working at the entrance of the pool where they are installing a concrete pad to help with drainage. A bench, bike rack and garbage receptacle are also to be installed. Playquest are to install the bench, bike rack and garbage receptacle around mid-June. They will also install two benches and a garbage receptacle at the splash park pad. Parks and Trails For the convenience of those walking on the new trails, benches and garbage receptacles will be installed at two locations. A bench, receptacle is also to be placed in the BMX Park and Lions 2 Park. A receptacle will also be installed in the Lions 1 Park. Outdoor fitness equipment on the south end of the RV Park along the trail is also to be put up. Canada Day and rodeo events Planning is ongoing for Canada
Day and the Rimbey Rodeo Parade. Both events happen in early June and are well attended. The Red Deer Royals, who have participated in the Rimbey parade in the past, are unavailable this year. Council agreed with a recommendation by administration to have the Rimbey Aquatic Centre open to the public free of charge from 3 to 6 p.m. on July 1. Public works Compost collection continues to be heavy with collection sometimes increasing to three days. One homeowner with 58 bags of compost caused crews to be delayed. “With the extra time it is taking, it is draining resources for other projects,” said public works foreman Rick Schmidt. “A bag limit might be one way to reduce the extra time it is taking to collect and free up staff for other projects.” “I’m fully in favor of a bag limit,” agreed Coun. Mathew Jaycox. Council made no decision on the matter at the meeting. Fee on late taxes forgiven Council agreed to partially forgive a late fee charged for overdue taxes as the property owner was in the hospital for 140 days, at which time he was unable to communicate. He paid the taxes in full, but was charged a late fee of 18 per cent. The fee was reduced to 12 per cent. Council agreed such issues need to be dealt with on an individual basis. “I don’t have a problem in this case,” said Coun. Mathew Jaycox. “We just have to be careful we are not setting a precedence,” added Mayor Rick Pankiw. Continued on page 6

By Treena Mielke Flames escaping from a burning barrel were the cause of a fire at a Rimbey area farm that could have gotten out of hand, Saturday. Ken Stemo gives the Rimbey Volunteer Fire Department kudos for its quick response and professional action in keeping the fire at his farm located a few miles west of Rimbey under control. “They were out here in five to 10 minutes and they took over right away. I’m grateful there was no more damage than what was caused already.” Stemo said he was burning some dried up thistles in the burning barrel that morning. “I had a good cover on it and I kind of forgot about it and went in
the house for lunch.” When he was having lunch he noted smoke on the south side of the house. “My truck had caught fire already,” he said. The fire quickly spread to an old shed that the Stemo’s had planned to demolish and an unused camper trailer. The 1998 truck had a full gas tank and was completely destroyed. “It was the biggest loss,” said Stemo. “It was old, but I liked that truck.” Stemo is grateful the fire didn’t spread to the tall spruce trees, his shop and house. “It had the potential to be very dangerous,” he said. The fire department was on the scene around noon.

Trying new activities can help you connect with people and nature, discover new perspectives and improve your health. Here are five physical activities you can try this summer: 1. Climbing: Learning to rock climb is physically and mentally challenging and helps you reach new heights. Many recreation facilities across Alberta have indoor climbing centres that offer lessons for all skill levels. You can also take the adventure outside to the Rocky Mountains: trained mountain guides in Kananaskis Country, Waterton Lakes, Banff and Jasper national parks, Nordegg and other areas can help you (safely) learn the ropes. Get started with the Alpine Club of Canada (alpineclubofcanada.ca or 403-678-3200). 2. Swimming: Cool off this summer by swimming in one of Alberta’s lakes. See the Atlas of AlbertaLakes website (alberta-lakes. sunsite. ualberta.ca) for detailed information about lakes near you. You can also visit your community swimming pool—it’s a great place to meet new people. 3. Exploring: Walking is a great way to discover your neighbour-
hood, town or city and spend time outdoors. Visit a museum, attend a play or festival, stop at a sidewalk café for a cool drink. Find more to do across the province at travelalberta. com. Or exchange your city sneakers for back-country boots and hiking trails; see albertaparks.ca for places to explore. 4. Canoeing, rafting and kayaking: Alberta may be landlocked, but we have all kinds of rivers and lakes that are perfect for canoeing, rafting and kayaking. You can choose from the Elk, Milk, Red Deer, South and North Saskatchewan rivers, Lakeland Provincial Park or Vermillion Lakes, among many others. Visit Paddle Alberta (paddlealberta.org) for routes and water safety tips. 5. Gardening: The joy of gardening is getting your hands dirty, relieving stress and connecting with nature. Gardening also helps children learn where food comes from and how it’s grown. Join a community garden or a horticultural society or club such as the Red Deer & District Garden Club (reddeergardeclub.ca) to meet gardeners in your neighbourhood. — reprinted from Apple magazine

Rimbey chamber prepares for lots of summer events and more local attractions By Treena Mielke A Rimbey Chamber of Commerce meeting held at the Super 8 on May 21 attracted seven members. Discussion centered around the future paving project on Hwy. 53 and bylaw changes. Trade fair successful Chamber members discussed the 2014 trade fair at a meeting held Wed., May 21 at the Super 8. In her report to the chamber, manager Carrie Vaartstra said it was a success, although there were only 36 booths booked, down from the 54 booked last year. Vendors came throughout Alberta, but the number of visitors was up from last year. Blindman Valley Pony Club did a great job collecting admission. The balloon clown and face-painting artists were popular and the ‘50s theme was well received. Community Futures donated the door prize of a barbecue and Home Hardware donated the barbecue utensils. The Bingo blackout prize was a swimming pass donated by the Town of Rimbey’s recreation department. Vaartstra recommended a trade fair committee be established next year. Incubator project ongoing The Chamber has agreed to keep
an incubator project on the back burner. “We haven’t dropped it, we’ve just slowed down in trying to hit a fall deadline. It will be a 2015 project. We want to tailor it to the needs that our out there. We don’t want to rush into something and do a poor job,” said chamber president Jackie Stratton. The town has earmarked $50,000 for the project. Bylaw changes approved The chamber approved the following bylaw changes: The board of directors shall determine the annual dues payable by members of the chamber subject to the approval of the fee at a general meeting and all dues are subject to annual review. The election of executive officers and at least three other directors shall be elected from among the members at the annual general meeting according to bylaws, policies and procedures of the chamber. The positions of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer are all one-year terms. Directors are appointed for a twoyear term. Officers and board members shall remain in office for their prescribed term or until their successors shall be appointed.

Beautification: A group of community minded people who wish to remain anonymous have started ‘Guerilla Gardening’ – a movement to beautify public areas that are not care for. The group’s first project took place on Sun., May 25. The mission was to improve the appearance of the treed bench area between the Treasury Branch and the Game On Outdoors store. A large amount of debris was removed and the overgrown trees were trimmed. A picnic table previously at the back of the area was moved so that people can enjoy using it in the shade. The group welcomes anyone interested to join them on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. Watch for Guerilla Gardens sign by Servus Credit Union. Photos submitted

Edwin Parr nomination and award ceremony held in Lacombe LACOMBE… On the evening of May 26, 2014 at the Edwin Parr Nomination & Award ceremonies at the Lacombe Memorial Centre in Lacombe, school jurisdictions from Central Alberta recognized and celebrated outstanding first year teachers and announced the overall recipient of this prestigious award. For many teachers, the first year in the classroom is among the most challenging of their career with planning, preparation and striving to be an excellent teacher. Earlier this year, the eight school jurisdictions that form Zone 4 of Alberta School Boards’ Association (ASBA) were invited to nominate a beginning year teacher who demonstrated outstanding attributes as a teacher.
“All of the nominees were exceptional first year teachers, Committee Chairperson, Lorrie Jess Each nominating jurisdiction provided a written assessment of the nominee’s teaching skills, knowledge of student learning styles, skills at utilizing a variety of instructional methodologies, ability to assist students develop a positive self-concept, involvement in professional development and extra-curricular, community activities and their personal skills with students.
The following teachers were nominated and celebrated as outstanding teachers at the beginning of their career: Jamie Bolen, Wolf Creek Public Schools; Mandi Dushank, Clearview Public Schools; Shari Klumpenhower, Chinook’s Edge School Division; Nathan Pederson, Battle River School Division; Sara Pickering, Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools; Laina Karvinen-Provencher, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools; Staron Stan, Red Deer Public Schools. The Edwin Parr Nomination and Award committee interviewed each nominee and visited their classroom to assess their personal characteristics and professional attributes. Committee Chairperson, Lorrie Jess,
says “All of the nominees were exceptional first year teachers, and while the comprehensive assessment was helpful, choosing a finalist was a most difficult decision. To quote Rita Pierson, ‘every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.’ These seven nominees are such champions.” The award ceremonies ended with the presentation of the Zone 4 Edwin Parr Award to Nathan Pederson, a grade 5/6 teacher at Chester Ronning School. Nathan will be honored at the Alberta School Boards’ Association Fall General Meeting.

The Boom Chucka Boys concert held in the Blindman Valley Ag Centre (BVAC) on May 10 saw about 200 enjoy the late lunch (more like a full fledged meal) catered by Bob Ronnie Catering while keeping the dance floor busy right from the start. It was good to see so many enjoying the music and so many up and actively dancing. also announced door prizes throughout the evening. With just very few short breaks, front man and lead vocalist and acoustic guitar strummer Ryan “Skinny Legs” Langlois, lead guitarist and background vocalist “Smokey” Joel Rathjen, upright and electric bass player and background vocalist “Smooth” Teddy Roy Michaylow, and new drummer Ben Shillabeer seemed to be able to read their audience very well and keep people entertained and occupied right up to closing time just after midnight with their original songs and western era and rock n’ roll renditions. The Boom Chucka Boys (BCB) bill themselves as “A WHOLE lot of country, with a splash of rock n’ roll. Sprinkle in some gospel, and little bit of soul.” When the group took shape in July 2010 the foundational drummer was Dave “Sweet Beats” Grobe. The Boom Chucka Boys have been gaining acclaim ever since. Their debut album was produced by award winning producer/songwriter Byron Hill who, along with Gord Bamford, won a Canadian Country Music Award in 2013, and is guaranteed to “Make you shake your boogie woogie!” say the boys in the band. There are many “firsts” for them this year including first time at the Big Valley Jamboree, first time at Dauphin Country Fest, first time performing at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, and performing at the Calgary Stampede, CNE in Toronto, and more. They have been busy recording their sophomore record at MCC Recording Studios in Calgary. Some big financial backers including one silver sponsor, five bronze sponsors and many Friends of the Library had a huge impact on the amount of funds raised. Thirty-two silent auction items brought in about $4,200.00. The more major items included a Ryan
Smyth retirement hockey jersey for $1,000.00, a large solar charging panel for an RV brought $275, a deluxe birdhouse went for $125, photos on canvas for $55, $75, and $125, a set of fireside tools for $125, an original oil painting of two young cattle for $110, two hand-made baby quilts for $65 and $110, and flower baskets for $75 to $85. BVAC donated the one-day rental. The bar, worked by seemingly tireless volunteers, added another $1,300.00 approximately so was well supported. The table centerpieces were for sale for $20 each. One-hundred-eighty tickets were pre-sold with another 21 sold at the door. “It was really a good event, even for a bunch of amateurs,” stated library board member Joyce Colborne as she explained this event was the board’s first attempt at hosting this kind of fundraiser. “We were all very pleased and would change very little. We have had no negative feedback and lots of positive as well as wishes that we would do it again. We are already talking about next year.” Some volunteers said they had learned a lot about how to organize this scale of event and now have a better idea what to change and what not to change. Library board chair and fundraiser committee head Dr. Sandy Jameson said, “Overall we were very happy with the event. We greatly appreciate all the community support. The evening ran smoothly and the BCB’s were a lot of fun! I would like to make it an annual event and I feel that most of the board would agree.” Says treasurer Sandra Smyth, “It was a great evening and a lot of fun. All the feedback so far is positive.” The objective of the library board was to raise $7,500.00 and with a lot of hard work and support, in the end, about $8,000.00 was realized.

As always, AltaLink will be run by and for Albertans The recent announcement of Berkshire Hathaway’s proposed investment in AltaLink has generated debate about foreign investment in Alberta in general and in Alberta’s electricity infrastructure in particular. Those opposed to the investment state they are concerned that foreign investment in AltaLink’s transmission system will put Albertan and Canadian interests at risk. My commitment to you is that AltaLink’s No. 1 imperative, under any investor model, is to serve and support Albertans by ensuring that our province has the reliable and cost-effective transmission service that we need to keep our economy growing. The fact is that the proposed investment in AltaLink is good for Albertans. And it’s consistent with Alberta’s values of entrepreneurship and openness to investment. Berkshire Hathaway Energy understands and supports the important role AltaLink plays in powering Alberta’s economy, by transmitting electricity to 85 per cent of Albertans. AltaLink will continue to operate as a separate, locally managed business, governed by an independent board of directors. Our headquarters, our control centre and our team of great employees will remain Alberta-based with a singular goal — serving Albertans.
This proposed investment is not unique. Electricity companies across Canada, and many in Alberta, have had a long, successful history of foreign investment. What is unique is that Berkshire Hathaway Energy brings a long-term commitment to Albertans. With that view, they have already committed that 100 per cent of the profit generated from their investment in AltaLink will be reinvested exclusively into AltaLink, Alberta or Canada. Berkshire Hathaway Energy also brings top tier global experience in the electricity industry. We will share best operational practices and pass the benefits on to our customers. As with all of AltaLink’s daily operations, new investors in our business must be approved through a rigorous regulatory process at both the provincial and federal levels. Unlike foreign investment in other sectors of Alberta, AltaLink is regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The AUC has broad legal powers to ensure that, no matter who the ultimate investor may be, AltaLink’s business will continue to be operated by the utility for the benefit of our customers. In this case, the ownership transition will be seamless for our customers. Alberta consumers will be protected in the process, as they should be.
Alberta needs to continue to have multiple transmission facility owners. It drives each of us to be better and lowers costs to Albertans. Compared to our Canadian peers, AltaLink delivers top quartile results in reliability, safety and cost efficiency, all while executing a significant construction program, ensuring our economy has the power it needs to prosper. Keeping AltaLink whole, as Berkshire Hathaway Energy has committed, will ensure the transmission system continues to reliably power Alberta’s economy. Alberta is Canada’s economic engine. We have built this province through ingenuity, innovation and investment. There is a long and proud tradition of foreign investment in Alberta’s electric market and other industries, including other critical infrastructure investments. Foreign investment isn’t something to be feared, it’s something that is well known in Alberta and welcomed. It makes Alberta better and provides benefits to each and every one of us. Let’s allow the federal and provincial regulators to do their job and ensure that Albertans continue to have the transmission system they deserve. Scott Thon, P.Eng., is the president and CEO of AltaLink.

Doing what’s best for our children. Alberta’s students are among the best in the world. To keep it that way, quality teaching is critical. Our teachers are dealing with significant challenges like new technology and curriculum, diverse student needs – and too many young teachers are leaving the profession. At the same time, Albertans want more accountability for what students are accomplishing in school. ‘Doing what’s best for our children.’ That was the direction I gave last year when I formed the independent blue-ribbon Task Force on Teaching Excellence. This dedicated group of educators, school leaders, educational consultants and community leaders used their combined knowledge and experience to make recommendations to achieve continuous improvement in teaching excellence.
Task Force membership includes: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Chair Dr. Glenn Feltham – President and CEO of NAIT with an extensive academic and professional background Vice Chair Sandra Jansen – Associate Minister of Family and Community Safety, MLA for Calgary-North West Naresh Bhardwaj – Associate Minister of Services for Persons with Disabilities, MLA for Edmonton-Ellerslie and former teacher David Dorward – MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar, Chartered Accountant and Certified Management Accountant David Fraser – Executive Director of Corporate Services with Edmonton Public Schools with more than 30 years of human resources experience Dr. Sharon Friesen – Vice Dean and Associate Dean of Professional and Community Engagement in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary, recipient of a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence Dr. Irene Lewis – a former teacher and the President Emeritus of SAIT Polytechnic, named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women 2010/2012 Dr. Craig Loewen – Dean of Education at the University of Lethbridge, recipient of ATA’s Educational Research Award Mackenzie Martin – a University of Alberta education student, former representative on the Alberta Education Minister’s Student Advisory Committee, recipient of the TD scholarship for Community Leadership Everett McDonald – MLA for Grande Prairie-Smoky, former reeve, former trustee Brent McDonough – former teacher serving as an advisor to the Masters in Educational Studies Program at the University of Alberta, co-chair of Inspiring Education Steering Committee, former chair Edmonton Public Library, former member U of A Senate Michele Mulder – Executive Director of the Alberta School Councils Association, former president of the Alberta School Boards Association Andy Neigel – President and CEO of Careers: The Next Generation, has taught at NAIT and the University of Alberta 14061DE0 Shelley Ralston – National Director of Talent and Culture for a Fortune 500 company, Chair of the Red Deer College Board of Directors, recipient of the Women of Excellence Award 2008 Laurie Thompson – a current teacher and ATA member, principal at Kikino School – recognized as one of the top 25 Schools in Canada in Today’s Parent magazine Ron Young – a current teacher, principal and ATA member with more than 30 years of experience
After hearing from 3,000 Albertans, their report is in. Some of their recommendations include: • • • • • • • • • • •
Increasing the time available to teachers for preparation and collaboration Internships and reduced workload for first year teachers Adopting a formal mentorship program to provide more support for beginner teachers, as well as new school and district leaders Improving evaluation process for teachers and the professional growth plan process Requiring teachers to maintain certification, with evaluations conducted – with the purpose of demonstrating professional growth and continual evidence of performance – every five years Increasing access teachers have to technology and specialized supports and services Requiring new school leaders to complete a leadership program At education faculties, increasing the amount of current practicum requirements to provide student teachers with more classroom experience before they graduate Requiring post-secondary institutions to look beyond grades to suitability when admitting education faculty applicants Increasing transparency and effectiveness of process for complaints of teacher competence or unprofessional conduct – the Task Force report does not recommend splitting the ATA into a college and a union, it prefers the government to work with the ATA to resolve the current issues Increasing empowerment for principals to deal with teachers that need to improve their skills – the Task Force report does not recommend removing principals from the ATA, it prefers the government to work with the ATA to resolve the current issues
Your government won’t make any decisions without hearing from parents, teachers and everyone who cares about our children’s education. It’s your turn to have a say.

Organizing underway for another ’50s and ’60s dance jamboree in Eckville By Stuart Fullarton Eckville Echo Music and dance lovers from across Western Canada are counting down the days until the next ’50s and ’60s dance jamboree, set to return to Eckville Aug. 23 and 24. This year’s event will follow the same format as last year’s, which was downsized and held in a new venue. Previously, it had been held at the arena, where it was attended by about 1,200 to 1,400 people annually. Last year, it was moved to the community centre for a smaller crowd of 400. Organizer Jerry Litz felt the more intimate atmosphere worked well for the event, and hopes this year’s will provide the same enjoyment. “Our intent is to have a little fun. We’re not trying to make money off it,” he said. “If we can pay our bills, we’re happy.” The amount of work required in putting it on at the arena, as well as the advancing age of organizing committee members, almost caused Litz to lower the curtain on the wildly popular event last year. After some thought, however, he decided to give it another go at a smaller venue. With a lighter workload as a result, organizing the event has become more enjoyable, and certainly more manageable, for those involved. “By cutting it down to that number from the arena, we sure saved ourselves a pile of work, and that’s kind of the reason we did it,” he said. “The workload was starting to get too much, and we’re get-
ting old. ‘Can do’ can’t keep up with the ‘want to’ anymore.” At press time, nine bands had been lined up. That number could increase further, however, as another recently expressed an interest in playing. Dancing will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, and run until 11 p.m., with a supper break between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday will begin with a gospel session from 10 a.m. until noon. A one-hour break will then precede an open mic session and more dancing from 1 to 3 p.m. Litz said the open mic proved one of the more popular events last year, and he’s excited to see it return. “There’s a lot of talent out there that a person doesn’t know about unless sometimes they get a little nerve and they want to try something, and that really worked out very well last year.” Weekend passes are priced at $20. More information is available by calling Litz at 403-729-2290. eral paint touchups but gouge marks in the sound proofing panels are starting to accumulate.” Stenstrom pointed out there is likely no ideal solution for replacement hoops as there is not enough room behind the court lines to mount a more stable portable system and mounting a permanent system on the wall or ceiling would reduce the aesthetic appeal of the room. Storage of the portable hoops is an issue as there are no storage facilities within the proximity of the main auditorium, he said. Council agreed to move the portable hoops to the arena for the summer.

School principal wants town to look at fixing up the tennis courts By Treena Mielke Rimbey town council has replaced the nets and repaired the fence around the tennis courts, and may look at more renovations later. Council, at its regular meeting Mon., May 26 heard a request from Rimbey high school principal Tim Lekas to fix up the tennis courts which he said are in poor condition. “The lines on the courts have faded significantly and need to be repainted and the practice wall is damaged and requires removal,” he said. He noted the post cranks are difficult to use and may need to be replaced, the asphalt surface is uneven with grass growing up through the cracks and a new practice wall needs to be installed,” he said. “The tennis courts are used ex-
tensively in the spring and fall for physical education classes at the school, meeting the needs of our 350 plus students. We believe that these tennis courts are an amenity that our town should preserve and maintain.” Lekas told council that representatives of the school and Wolf Creek Public Schools would be open to having the courts moved to the school grounds. However, he said maintenance and costs involved in moving the courts would be the responsibility of the town. “Wolf Creek School Division doesn’t have funds to do that.” A suggestion by Coun. Jack Webb to have the lines painted will be discussed at council’s June 23 meeting.

The event was, no doubt, fun for the students, but the program itself could have a far-reaching impact and its message serves as a reminder to just say ‘no’ to drugs and alcohol. Bryce, one of the students who read his essay during the graduation, said he has learned there are options available when confronted with difficult choices. “You can walk away, remember there is strength in numbers, say no while giving an excuse or change the subject.” “I think D.A.R.E. is a great program and has made me a stronger and more responsible person,” another student commented. “Drugs and alcohol change the way you act and people won’t want to be around you,” added another student. “Smoking harms your health, your lungs, your arteries and is very expensive and addictive.” People who bully others have usually been bullied themselves. Our choices always have consequences. D.A.R.E. taught us a variety of things that will help us in the future.” Const. Larissa Shadforth taught the D.A.R.E. program in Bluffton, Rimbey Elementary and Rimbey Christian Schools. “It went really well,” said Sgt. Mark Groves from Rimbey RCMP. “It was very well received. We had a very positive response.” D.A.R.E. is a prevention education program jointly sponsored by the community, schools and the police that help youngsters gain coping tools to deal with alcohol and drugs and other peer pressures . The program was developed in 1983 in Los Angeles, California as a cooperative effort between the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Since its inception, the D.A.R.E. Program, which is reviewed and updated on a regular basis, has expanded to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada D.A.R.E. educates children at the Grade 5/6 level to help prepare them for entry into junior high and high school, where they are most likely to encounter pressure to use drugs and negative choices. The elementary school curriculum provides students with the skills they need to make better choices when in difficult situations and gives them tools to deal make positive decisions and helps them deal with bullying, peer pressure and stress and learn how to communicate effectively.

Council clamps down on open mike rules and subject matter By Treena Mielke Council is changing its criteria for open mike discussions and clamping down on the subject matter. At its meeting, May 26, council voted unanimously in favor of revising the bylaw regarding open mike sessions. Wording has been changed to state that people who want to talk at the open mike forum will have to speak only on issues that are discussed during that council meeting. The previous bylaw stated the public was allowed to bring any town related issue to the forum. However, council agreed holding open mike sessions in such a way was not productive, as councillors would be able to better to answer these questions after looking into the matter and obtaining the correct in-
formation. Council want the public to phone or come into the town office and request to be put on the agenda as a delegation if they have issues they wish to discuss that are not related to the current meeting. The bylaw states the open mike session is to be no longer than 20 minutes and no formal decision shall be made on any matter discussed with council during the session. The new bylaw was not received favorably by at least two people in the gallery. “I think you are limiting the open discussion more than it needs to be,” said Jim Moore. Florence Stemo questioned the fact council gave all three readings to the bylaw at the same meeting. Council initiated the open mike forum after the fall election.
Chamber looks at theme for town By Treena Mielke Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce is busy working behind the scenes to come up with a theme for the town. Chamber president Jackie Stratton said the idea is to create an “architectural flow” giving the commercial section of the town a similar theme. Stratton noticed other communities such as Sylvan Lake and Lacombe have successfully incorporated such themes which are related to their specific municipality. Lacombe’s interconnected his-
toric mural depicts daily life in Lacombe between 1890 and 1910. Painted in the historic downtown area, the murals are a colorful, realistic snapshot of Lacombe’s heritage. Stratton agrees the murals are a great way to promote the town, but notes there are other possibilities, as well. “Murals are a great way to promote such a theme, but there are other ideas as well. I’m excited about it.” The chamber executive is preparing a power point presentation which will be shown to the members later this summer.
What does cognitive dissonance mean? Dear Editor, Cognitive dissonance? One meaning is, to ignore or deny any information that conflicts with existing beliefs. If the Canadian Wheat Board Alliance is right, cognitive dissonance might reach epidemic proportions before the next Federal election. According to the Alliance, last Feb. with wheat priced $11.38/bu at Vancouver; producers received $4.69/bu or 41 per cent of the selling price. Under single-desk, with wheat priced $10.61/bu at Vancouver; producers received $9.99/bu or 94 per cent of the selling price.
Now I don’t care one little bit if MP David Anderson and MP Gerry Ritz suffer from a bad bout of cognitive dissonance but I feel compassion for those hard working producers who supported “market freedom” because of Conservative lies. It is possible to get the singledesk back and the first step is making sure the likes of Anderson and Ritz are not around after the next election. If a 50 per cent drop in the farmer’s share of the selling price won’t do it, nothing will. Bev Currie, Swift Current, Saskatchewan
West Country Outreach students, Jackie Shippy and Katrna Shippy, received awards for their participation in the Legion Remembrance poster contest, from Com. Barbara Patey, and teacher Marg Brookwell, the school participation certificate. Katrina also received a second place award for Area A, and District 4 Photo submitted.

Glendon “Glen” Harry Fawcett of Rimbey, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer on Saturday, May 23, 2014 at the age of 71 years. Glen was born on May 25, 1942 in Rimbey and attended school in Lavesta, Bluffton, and Rimbey. He enjoyed various jobs throughout his life; a county grader operator, a labourer at Nielson’s Sawmill in Grovedale, Alberta, and he was also employed for a time at CWS and Amerada Hess. However, Glen’s one true passion was farming, and his animals were always his first priority. He also loved to venture out fishing and hunting, and he took the time to enjoy curling and hockey in his younger years. Glen was also an avid gardener, and to watch and feed the birds gave him much yearround pleasure. Although he never traveled too far from his farm, Glen was very well-read and aware of world news and events. He greatly cherished many friendships throughout his life, and the coffee pot was always on for anyone who visited. Glen will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his family and friends. Glen leaves to mourn his loving family: his sister, LaVerne (Harvey) Norstrom and family; his brother, Fred (Susan) Fawcett and family; his sister, Doris (Lavern) Galenza and family; and his sister, Joan (Rod) Bohn and family; in addition to special cousins, Lanny and Denise Dubielew and their family; and John and Jim Fawcett; as well as a host of additional relatives and many special friends. Glen was predeceased by his parents, Shorty and Laurene Fawcett; and two nephews, Neil Norstrom and Dale Fawcett. With respect for Glen’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. An Informal Gathering of Family and Friends in his Honour will be announced at a later date. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment will take place at a later time in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Glen’s Memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. SIEBOLD David John Siebold of Forshee, Alberta passed away at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Lacombe on Friday, May 23, 2014 at the age of 53 years after a short, but courageous battle with a brain tumour. David was born in Camrose, Alberta on December 16, 1960 to Doris and Ralph Siebold. The family moved to the Hoadley area when David was six years old, where he was raised with his siblings, Quentin, Harley, Christine, and Margaret. David met and married his soul-mate, Jeannine Desautels in the year, 1987. Over the next twenty-seven years, they were blessed with three wonderful children, Gabriel (Erin); Monique (Tyler) Larsen; and Logan; as well as three precious grandchildren, Adalynn (age two); Peyton (age eight months); and one expected to arrive in June. He is also survived by his loving mother, Doris Siebold of Hoadley; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other family members, and numerous close and cherished friends. David was predeceased by his father, Ralph Siebold in 2003. David was a well-respected member of the community. Many friends, neighbours, family members, and colleagues came to David as their “go-to” guy. He touched many lives, and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered. A Public Memorial Service in Honour of David’s Life was held at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre, 5202 - 51 Street, Bentley on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Card Of Thanks
I would like to express a sincere thank you to the many, many friends and neighbors who pitched in to help out for the weeks since my accident. To the Rimbey Ambulance, Dr. Adzich, Dr. Nawrot and home care for their quick response and the many people who brought meals, coffees, baking, flowers and came by to visit. The visits from my water aerobic teammates made me feel like I was still part of the team! I am overwhelmed by the kindness and support and appreciate your friendship. God bless you all.
