A kitchen fire in a Comox home caused significant smoke damage Thursday morning, an incident which happens more often than not, noted Fire Chief Gord Schreiner. Shortly before 11 a.m., the department received a call for a home on Austin Road with

smoke coming out of its roof. “We responded and it looks like a fire on the stove; someone’s left a pot on the stove. Nobody was home at the time so we forced our way in,” explained Schreiner. “Everything should be fine except for significant damage in the home.” He added there was considerable heat in the home.

Robb Road students embrace Bike to School Week Terry Farrell

If the response from students at École Robb Road Elementary School is any indication, Bike to School Week was an unmitigated success. The program, which ran in conjunction with Bike To Work Week, encouraged students and parents to leave the vehicles behind and start the day by being active. “Monday we had 135 bikes on the racks; Tuesday we had 158 and then Wednesday we had a whopping 185,” said Laura Lan, regional educator, CyclingBC iRide For BC Schools Program, who helped organize Robb Road’s participation. Friday there were 175 bikes on the racks. “And that doesn’t even count the kids who were walking, or scootering, so that’s great,” said Lan. Robb Road turned the week into much more than a simple bike ride to school. There was a passport, where participants could track their mileage. There was an obstacle course to test their skill at weaving through gates, and over rises. And there was even a challenge with other schools in the area. Huband Park Elementary and École Puntledge Park Elementary also had activities for Bike to School Week. “We have had a lot of different

The passport and interactive travel map has been really popular. We collect the passports today and there will be draw prizes.” The total mileage accumulated by the students over the four days was 2,286 km.

“I am not certain how that compares to other schools although seeing as not many other schools had such a large organized effort to promote Bike to School Week as Ecole Robb Road, I would guess that we accumulated more miles, likely many more,” said Lan. The best part of the week, from Lan’s perspective, was the positive feedback she received from many of the parents. “A lot of families have said that this week has provided them with the opportunity to see that it’s not that hard, that they can do it,” she said. “I had a lot of parents say that they were surprised at how easy it was to get the kids into it – that there was never an issue in getting ‘little Johnny’ pushed out the door. So there was some real momentum gained this week and we are going to try to keep that going.” The single bike rack that, until this week, was sufficient for the bikes used by students, was heaving all week long. The Comox Valley Cycling Coalition came to the rescue, supplying Robb Road with an additional four racks for the added demand. “They have said they will leave them there for as long as we need

them, so it would be nice if those became permanent,” said Lan. “The whole idea of the program is to not only get kids active again, but the more kids there are riding bikes to school, the less (motorized) traffic there is in school zones. That benefits everyone. Fewer emissions, fewer traffic snarls, and less of a chance of a serious incident, involving a car and a child.”

Bike to School Week running at the same time as Bike to Work Week is by design. “What we kind of hope for is that parents will take part in the initiative by pedalling with the kids to school, then continuing to work,” said Lan. “I know a lot of families did that this week. If they continue to do that on a regular basis, well, that’s what this is all about.”

Protest outside Value Village Former employees cite bullying and harrassment Scott Stanfield Record Staff

When Karen Beasley was hired at the Courtenay Value Village two-and-a-half years ago, she was told it would be a fun environment. It was anything but, says the former housewares pricer who grew tired of watching staff members break into tears, and hearing stories about co-workers being disciplined for “silly things” such as laughing and talking. “I’ve been listening to management for two-and-a-half years saying things will get better,” said Beasley, who recently quit her job. “There’s poison here. “The back end that works with thousands of pounds of dirty clothes and merchandise, they’re driven by quota. The management bonus system is not based on dollars out the door, it’s based on numbers to the floor. I think when you have a system like that, you’re fostering an environment that’s kind of ready for mistreatment.” Beasley was among four women who held placards outside the store Tuesday. The former employees were protesting bullying and harassment from managers. “Our district manager (from Vancouver) described us as the laziest bunch of people she’s ever seen up here because we yawn too much,” said Dawn Anderson, who quit her job pricing clothes in January, 2013. Anderson used to work at a Victoria Value Village but quit after five years because she couldn’t stand it. She tried a year in management but said the situation was no better. She thought a new store under new management might be better.

Patsy Wheatley also quit her job while Tracy MacDonald was fired. The latter is collecting medical employment insurance while she awaits a second shoulder surgery due to an injury sustained on the job. “They accepted my claim knowing I was dismissed unfairly,” MacDonald said. “EI (employment insurance) doesn’t just give medical EI for nothing unless there’s a reason.” She says carts are packed too high in the back of the store, causing workers to use their arms in an awkward way. “Where I go to physiotherapy, they said that Value Village is the worst company for medical injuries in the Valley,” said MacDonald, who was fired as she approached her two-year profit share. She knows of just two employees who stand a chance of earning profit-sharing. “They find a way to get rid of you,” she said. Value Village management

says it is committed to providing a safe and respectful work environment. As outlined to employees during training — dubbed Respect in the Workplace — the company policy says managers and team members are to work together in a courteous and professional manner at all times. “We are vigorously committed to enforcing this policy, and conduct not in accordance is not tolerated,” Sara Gaugl, director of communications, said via email from corporate headquarters in Washington. “Further, we have an open door policy in place and any complaint is taken seriously.” The email was the only correspondence offered by the company to numerous phone calls placed by the Comox Valley Record. “It was definitely no open door policy,” Anderson said. “Management doesn’t take you seriously when you bring concerns about harassment from management. You get yelled at and then you get told it’s your fault.”

Big money for Hospice Society Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Holding back tears, Audrey Craig said she, along with the entire board of directors of the Comox Valley Hospice Society “are over the moon” following an announcement Friday of a $250,000 grant by the provincial government towards four new hospice beds at St. Joseph’s General Hospital. Craig, the president of the organization, explained the grant will support renovation costs to the hospice beds in The Views residential care facility, scheduled to open next spring. “This community has been working diligently to having access to the kind of hospice services that are available elsewhere throughout the province. With Island Health’s announcement of operational funds for four beds in November, coupled with the grant from the Ministry of Health, we are now on a fast track to realizing our dream — a 40-year dream.” Both Health Minister Terry Lake and Comox Valley MLA Don McRae were on hand at the public opening of the healing gardens at the hospital for the announcement.

“I have friends involved in the hospice society here so I was aware of their work, but Don McRae has been a tireless champion of the cause and it fits in extremely well with Premier Clark’s vision that she wants me to carry out of doubling hospice beds by 2020 throughout the province of British Columbia,” Lake said. “This was an opportunity and Island Health has made the commitment for operating to put the capital in. It will speed up the project and make sure that people of the Comox Valley will have the opportunity to have hospice in the community sooner rather than later.” McRae said the grant is the biggest $250,000 announcement the B.C. government has ever made in the Comox Valley. “I say that because there are so many partners … there’s just so many individuals that came together with Island Health as well to make sure that we become the beneficiaries of these four hospice beds.” The renovations to The Views will convert existing four-bed rooms into single rooms. The federal government is contributing $80,000 to support the next two editions of Vancouver Island MusicFest, and yearround programming by the Comox Valley Folk Society. The non-profit society will receive $40,000 for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 fiscal years. “Government recognizes that arts, culture and heritage are important generators of economic growth, jobs and wealth,” Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan said in a Friday announcement at Simms Millennium Park. “This supports jobs right here in our community, and generates economic activity for the region…. The Vancouver Island MusicFest is a cornerstone event.

We are happy to be part of it.” The announcement was music to the ears of Doug Cox, the festival’s artistic director and executive producer, who acknowledged government’s recognition of the “work we do as ambassadors for diverse music,” both homegrown and abroad. “We have a huge economic impact here,” Cox said. “We’re recognized as one of the top festivals on the national and international

festival scene.” Cox said less than five per cent of the festival’s million-dollar operating budget is funded, about 80 per cent federal and 20 per cent provincial. Federal funds have helped the festival initiate a music-in-the-schools program. This year marks the 20th anniversary of MusicFest, which runs July 11-13 at the fair* grounds. Jobs were cut and reserves were drained in order to balance the Comox Valley School District’s 2014/2015 budget. After wrestling with a $2.16-million shortfall in its operating budget of $74.5 million, the Finance Committee brought the annual budget bylaw (totalling $84 million) before the Board of Education Tuesday. The board voted unanimously to approve the bylaw. Job cuts were unavoidable this year, district secretary treasurer Russell Horswill said after the meeting. “In prior years we had reduced

travel and supplies accounts and things of that nature. This year we were forced to be looking at reducing staff to achieve the savings,” he said. “The vast majority of the reductions this budget cycle were people. “We sought to balance the effect across the budget, so we saw reductions in instruction, administration, operation and maintenance and transportation. And, we also sought to have a balanced effect on the various types of employee groups between teachers, support staff and administration.” Twenty-three FTE (full-time equivalent) teaching positions and 23 FTE support staff positions were cut. Elevate set to transform downtown Downtown Courtenay is going to look a little different this week, as Elevate Arts Festival takes over the core, beginning Wednesday and running through to Saturday evening. At first the change might be gradual to the casual observer. Wednesday night will be filled with ideas through “WordPlay” and “Pecha Kucha”. Thursday eve the change will intensify with “Delinquency, “The Tribal Cafe” and “Voices of Fire”, a fiery conversation series at the local Art Gallery. By Friday, it will become abundantly clear that something unusual is afoot with cranes rolling onto the street, alleys closing up, art installations being constructed, DJs playing, shows at local pubs and cafes, and volunteers and artists hustling and bustling with stages, tents and scaffolding.

On Saturday the alleys, plazas and Duncan Avenue in Downtown Courtenay will be a whole new world with Underground Art, Extreme Crafts, Circus, Art Projects, Shadow Puppets, Portals and Pop Up Parks, Performance Art, Improvised Rock Operas, Slam Poetry, Installations, an explosive Hip Hop showcase, Street Dance Parties, DJs, Kids Crafts, Live Fire Performance and a whole lot more. It’s all part and parcel as for the third year, the Comox Valley arts scene exposes itself to the masses, presenting over 200 artists and performers, free of charge, to an audience of culture lovers. “The Elevate Arts Festival is a really inspiring undertaking,” says co-producer Meaghan Cursons. “It’s all about breaking down barriers between culture producers and culture consumers and coming together to create a truly accessible event

Highland student art show opens at Pearl Ellis Art Gallery today Highland Secondary art students have been busy creating work for their show, opening today at the Pearl Ellis Art Gallery and the excitement has really started to build around the event. The Betties will take to the track in Game 2 at 8 p.m. The Brass Knuckle Derby Dames were in Courtenay to play against the Brick House Betties last month in an exciting game. On May 10, local roller derby fans were treated to a nail-biter, resulting in a 220-217 win for the Dames. “I am incredibly proud of the game we played against the Brass Knuckle Derby Dames,” said Brick House Betties team co-captain, Ruby Whipper. “There were so many lead changes, it was anyone’s game.” In the headline game of the upcoming June 7 event, the Brick House Betties will challenge Victoria’s Belles of the Brawl to a rematch. The Belles came up-Island last June and beat the Betties 209-169. At that time, the Betties had to borrow a few skaters from the Rink Minx, another local Comox Valley derby team, to complete their

Ducks in danger of being untrained for Ducky 500

The community is getting excited about the upcoming Comox Rotary Ducky 500, but does anyone give any thought to the little yellow competitors? Stu Tunheim, president elect of the Rotary Club, is urging people to buy their Ducky tickets early. “People may not realize that the ducks don’t get to go in the race unless a ticket that matches their number has been sold,” said Tunheim. “They can’t start training.” Tunheim is worried that the little ducks could get themselves in trouble if they have to wait too long for their number to be sold. “Lots of people like to wait until the July 1 parade to buy their Ducky ticket, but we’ve been sold out for the last few races, so it would be better if people find a Rotarian or a participating retailer to get their ticket sooner,” said Tunheim. The Ducky 500 is the annual Canada Day event where hordes of little rubber ducks are released on the Courtenay River, with great prizes up for grabs. The proceeds of the race are used by the Comox Rotary Club to fund worthy causes in the Comox Valley. “Chad’s West Coast Bar and Grill and Eby’s both have coupons on the back of the ticket that are worth more than the $10 cost of the ticket,” said Tunheim. “Why would you wait?” While Chad’s has wonderful food on their menu, they do not serve duck. No ducks were harmed in the making of this article.

Spam laws a waste of time

e doubt there is anyone who hasn’t been annoyed by spam. We’re not talking about that delicious canned spiced ham, but the endless stream of e-mails advertising everything from Viagra to Rolux (sic) or the $30 million a nice man in Nigeria wants to send you. We’re being a bit silly here, but what is really ludicrous is the federal government’s new antispam legislation, which takes effect on July 1. It is hard to imagine a more trivial non-problem for the government to concern itself with, let alone how the rules, which require businesses get written or oral consent before they send e-mails or other digital messages to consumers will put an end to spam. The new regulations address a problem that, by and large, has already been dealt with through technological means; spam filters at the level of both your home computer and your Internet Service Provider are sophisticated, effective and constantly being updated. This legislation also doesn’t do much to stop the particular flavour of spam e-mail that is a problem: fraudulent or phishing e-mails trying to scam you into revealing your personal information. They’re unlikely to ask your permission either. On the end user side of the question, there will be some that want to file grievances regardless of how effective their spam filter has been, and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is already saying they won’t be able to handle the expected flood of complaints. So what have the feds accomplished with their new anti-spam legislation? An increase in bureaucracy, to be sure, but not much else. Once again, the government creates a bureaucratic nightmare, forcing law-abiding citizens to take time out of their days to abide by silly rules, while the real crooks continue doing business as usual. Did the feds not learn anything from the gun registry fiasco? Yet another day off for students as Comox Valley is affected by the rotating teachers’ strike today.

Farmland bill passes, to the dismay of many

he B.C. Liberal government’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature. “You’re all a bunch POLITICS of corrupt liars,” NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons OM yelled as the government cut off a long LETCHER and mostly repetitious debate that dominated the final days of the legislature session. Not to be outdone, cabinet minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Bennett’s most vocal supporters as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones. Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person. “She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said. The on-the-record debate wasn’t much better. Columbia River-Revelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald summed up his party’s biggest objection with his charge that “a bunch of Liberal political hacks” will be appointed to regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission. The government’s scheme, Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals, to enrich B.C. Liberal supporters by allowing development on productive farmland.

That might be a valid concern, but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government. It’s been that way since the Dave Barrett administration set it up in 1973. Second, the regional panels are not new. The B.C. Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of corrupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time they would have found enough greedy political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process. I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense. Strict secondary residence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure. In most rural areas, they are a mistake, and are frequently ignored. The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the current system, 75 per cent of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be fixed? It’s a good question

that the government did not adequately answer. And credit also goes to the new agriculture minister, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded performance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm. Braving the heckling at the end, Letnick put aside his partisan talking points and gave his personal assurance that the government’s intention is to support farming in those places where non-farm income is the only thing that keeps people on the land. As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundraising plea to its members to help “save” the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow. Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true. Special needs student voices opinion on teachers’ strike Dear editor, Hi my name is Julia. I am a Grade 11 student at Navigate powered by NIDES North Island Distance Education School. I am writing this letter in response to the teachers’ strike. I both agree and disagree with the teachers. I agree that every human being has the right to stand up for what they believe in. What I have a problem with is how it affects others. The teachers going on strike affects students by taking away certain things that mean a lot to the students. It even means a lot to some of the teachers. I believe that this strike is hurting both students and teachers. One of the issues that the teachers talk about is classroom size and composition. I agree that there are too many students in classrooms. I disagree that it is because of students with special needs. EVERYONE HAS SPECIAL NEEDS!!! This is a label that is being used by teachers to get more help. As a student labeled as special needs I resent being used. There are many things that I can do myself and there are also many things that labeled normal students need help with. Instead of using any student, I think we should look at each classroom needing support – this way no one is being used and support is being provided for everyone! Another thing that bothers me is how all teachers are being made to do things when they don’t all want to. The government has told teachers they can’t be on school grounds for certain times each day. This affects teachers as not all of them want to leave – not every teacher agrees with the strike. I believe that we, the students should have

rights too. I have the right to have a teacher teach me. I have the right to support — not because I have special needs, but because I am a human being! Cyclists welcome back Classic Earle Couper Record Staff

The Coal Town Classic cross-country mountain bike endurance race returned to Cumberland May 25, after a more than a 10-year absence. Organized by the United Riders of Cumberland, the event featured both a 30km and 50km event on the same course that will be featured in the Cumberland stage of this year’s B.C. Bike Race. Nearly 100 riders turned out, with a strong Comox Valley contingent joined by others from Texada Island, Victoria, Powell River, North Vancouver, Port Alberni, Campbell River, Nanaimo, West Vancouver, Squamish and even a few from Alberta. In the 30km race, the overall and female U18 winner was Emily Johnston (Comox-Trail Bicycles) with a time of 2:21:33.9. Darryl Anderson (Victoria) was tops in the female 18-39 age division in 2:25.49.3 and fourth overall. Gary MacGregor (Comox) was top male and 40+ rider in 2:23:05.1, good enough for second overall. Adam Christensen (CourtenayTrail Bicycles) won the male 18-39 group in 2:26.58.0 and was fifth overall while Breckin Nowak (Comox-Trail Bicycles) won U18 in 2:23.52.3 and was third overall. The 50km overall and male open/expert winner was Greg Day (Squamish) in 2:47:35.3. Greg Macdonald (CumberlandDodge City Cycles/ UROC) was the top local, finishing 11th overall in 3:08:14.9. Steve Lan (Comox) topped the male 18-39 age group in 3:09:58.5 and was 14th overall while John Fokkema (Victoria) took 40+ honours with a time of 3:02:25.3 and finished eighth overall. Cumberland quilt show a success Cumberland Schoolhouse Quilters had another successful quilt show during Empire Days in Cumberland to celebrate their 35-year anniversary. Many of these quilts are given away through charity groups organized by the guild. A variety of these treasures were on display over the May long weekend at the Cumberland OAP Hall, many of which

are donated to various charities that were also displayed. The quilt show was well attended with guests viewing rows of beautiful quilts, shopping with local vendors who had booths set up and enjoying tea cupcakes served by ladies of the guild. Many thanks to attendees, volunteers and vendors for making the show a success. A

further thank you to Fabricland for donating six bolts of fabric for new sails and CVEX for sharing 10 new frames, all of which were needed to display the many quilts. In addition to the quilts, there were five theme gift baskets that were raffled off and they were full of many wonderful items donated by quilters and local business.
