Nearly two dozen relatives of Margaret Jenkins will descend upon her namesake school this week to celebrate its 100th anniversary. “We have 23 relatives of
Margaret Jenkins visiting from six different U.S. states, and some of them have never met one another,” said Hazel Currie, volunteer with the centennial celebrations committee at École Margaret Jenkins school. Born in Wales in 1843, Jen-
kins spent her early years in Chile before moving to Victoria with her second husband in 1882. Jenkins became a tireless advocate of better schooling during her 17 years as a trustee, and became the first woman to have a building named after

Comic book revives Margaret Jenkins for new generation University of Victoria illustrator teams up with Margaret Jenkins class for bilingual novella Natalie North News staff
Six years ago, students at École Margaret Jenkins Elementary began a project that combines research, art, language and conflict resolution skills. It’s the kind of project that adults often dream about, and one that, after a much hard work and patience, yields joy and magic for both teacher and student alike. They’re publishing books – comic books – with the latest iteration chronicling the life of Margaret Jenkins in the lead-up to the school’s centennial celebration this week. “It gives (students) such a rich understanding of the nature of story, by delving right into how you create it,” said Steven Toleikis, Grade 4/5 teacher, who has guided his students through the creation of five books under the direction of local artist Susan Abrill. “This extra tool, visualization, really clicks for kids. Kids really respond well to metaphors. And visualizing a story helps to give them what they need to make their imaginations soar.” This spring, Toleikis’ English stream class combined forces with the French Immersion students of Laurie Cairns’ Grade 4/5 class to create a bilingual graphic novella featuring Margaret Jenkins. Books have varied wildly in content – from an adaptation of Kenneth Oppel’s Airborn, to musings on technological advances and future possibilities – while the creation A

Students research stories, illustrate cells, develop dialogue and ink their pages before they’re sent to Island Blue for publication and eventually wind up on classroom and library shelves. For the current project, beginning with Jenkins’ birth in Wales in 1840, this translated to much time invested in researching the time period. “It’s not a historical document that they’re creating, but rather than put them in short dresses and bobbed hair, you’ve got to put them in ringlets and a long dress,” Toleikis said. “You can imagine the richer sense of history they’re getting by approaching it like that, rather than just reading a story about Margaret Jenkins.” Abrill, also an English teacher in the language centre at the University of Victoria, sees her role as coach, someone to offer drawing guidance and ensure holes in logic are sewn up.

And when it comes time for the kids to see their work in print – Abrill describes it as amazing. “It gives you chills. The whole room is silent, crowded around each other, looking for their copies. The first book we made, I was so wrapped up in getting the thing done, that I was about to miss the most magical moment. (Toleikis) said: ‘Wait, watch this.’ He just got me to settle down and watch. ... For a kid, even seeing their name printed inside a book is amazing.” The novella is set to be released this Friday during the official celebration of the school’s centennial. And if all goes to plan, there will be a seventh iteration of the project next year. “Comics have come along way from 50 years ago, from being banned, to now, when they’re really making their way back into the curriculum,” Abrill said. “I don’t know of anyone else who’s doing this work in Canada.” arts@mondaymag.com

Community celebration ■ On June 6, École Margaret Jenkins elementary is inviting the community to celebrate their 100th anniversary on school grounds from 5 to 8 p.m. The party includes a bouncy castle, outdoor games, a pirate school run by the Maritime Museum of B.C., facepainting and even a bike rodeo. Through a 50/50 draw, the school is raising funds for a “naturalized playground” for future students, said organizer Shari Roubini, a parent advisory committee executive at the school. “It’s something different than the traditional playground, where we have logs, sand, and even an amphitheatre so we can have outdoor classes for kids,” she said. ■ An afternoon tea and look back at Jenkins’ history – open to all alumni – takes place Friday from noon to 3 p.m.

The City of Victoria will provide a one-time grant of $200,000 to finance the move as well as a continued operating grant of $122,000 for Silver Threads. The move resolves a decade-old debt that was created when Silver Threads was asked to move from Centennial Square to make way for the current Capital Regional District building in 2004. Silver Threads has been in cityleased commercial space on Douglas Street since then, awaiting a permanent office solution. Silver Threads board president Andy Robinson thanked council for the assistance transiting to the new digs. “We are optimistic that with this decision Silver Threads Service will thrive in a new location,” Robinson said. “We look forward to building a collaborative, neighbourhood model to serve seniors of Victoria and the Jubilee community.”

Student walkout would miss mark It’s encouraging to see students from across the province stepping out and speaking up on the ongoing negotiations between their teachers and the provincial government. Many Victoria students are expected to walk out of class today (Wednesday) holding placards and pickets to remind both parties that the decisions they are making related to rotating strikes and lockouts are Even the threat teacher having the greatest of an organized impact on their This on the walkout should education. day before rotating be enough strikes impact School District 61 once again. to remind the While we are thrilled adults on both to see non-voting age British Columbians sides that show an interest in students are political matters, we feel direction won’t being impacted students’ accomplish much. Today is the only day this week that no teacher in B.C. will be picketing – meaning all students from all schools in B.C. should be in class. It also means that the students who participate in the walkout will miss two days of classes this week. With just a couple of weeks before finals, students of all skill levels need all the in-class time with teachers they can get to prepare themselves. We’re sure some students see the word “walkout” and treat it as an opportunity to skip classes. But we hope that’s not the case for most willing to risk losing another day of learning at such a crucial time of year. We hope the BCTF and the provincial government take note that students are ready and willing to walk. Even the threat of an organized walkout should be enough to remind the adults on both sides that students are being impacted the most in this dispute. No one wants to see this whole sorry affair drag on and put the education of our children at risk. And if you can help it by being in class when class is in session, that’s the best way of not risking your education. What do you think? Our investigation also drew attention to the need for clear, accessible public information and reporting and complaints process. Public information about environmental protection programs helps develop confidence that government is meeting its obligations as a steward of the environment and our province’s natural resources. An effective complaints process makes the government aware of problems and the need to resolve them. The government has accepted our recommendations to improve both its public information and its complaint processes under the riparian regulations. Environmental awareness is nothing new to British Columbians, who not only care deeply about our natural environment but also expect government to enact effective measures to protect it. Our report highlights gaps in how an important environmental protection program was operating and recommends changes. The province now has to seize this opportunity to implement the changes it has accepted. We’ll be watching the results, and I encourage all British Columbians to do the same. LETTERS ‘Floating’ library books only part of the problem with missing books Re: Where have all the good books gone? (News, May 30) While I appreciate that Mr. Palmer called me and interviewed me, the article does not reflect or even mention the detailed concerns I expressed and so I find it somewhat disappointing. It just gives the library’s pat and not really accurate answers. The books that are gone are not floating. They no longer appear in the catalogue. I know how to use the catalogue and how to place a hold. That is not the issue. The books are gone. And with the paperback section removed, and replaced with largely empty tables, the paperbacks are now in amongst the hardback fiction. And so the fact that those shelves are half to onethird empty means that there are a lot of fiction books gone. I do not understand why the goal of the librarians, the custodians of our literature, our culture, would be to manage empty shelves, but that seems to be the case. I was told in the interview with Mr. Palmer that the

Many years Persuasion. ago while browsing, I It tells the story of a found a series called Quaker family during Strangers and Brothers the U.S. civil war and by C.P. fiction about a life in politics in Great Britian throughout the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. I recently wanted to revisit the series, but it is gone and out of print. I was invited to do an interlibrary loan and that is a nice thing. But if I were browsing today, I would never find it to even know I might want to read it. And interlibrary loans, it turns out, are complicated and not convenient in any way. Meanwhile, our shelves sit empty not because books are “floating” but because they are gone. Cycling gender gap for good reason Last summer I became a mother, and while I was once an enthusiastic cyclist, I am now much less confident cycling in Victoria, especially anywhere I have to share the road with traffic. And I’m not alone. In Victoria men and women cycle equally up until the age of 25. After 25, the percentage of female cyclists drops by 25 per cent. One explanation for this drop may be women’s concern about safety, particularly for their children. To be fair, there have been significant improvements to Victoria’s cycling infrastructure, however we need to do much more.

For example, Blanshard Street has painted bike lanes, but when there is a 40 km/hr speed difference between myself and a truck passing within a metre of my shoulder, I simply don’t feel safe. Cycling infrastructure needs to be planned and implemented with our most vulnerable citizens at the heart: our kids. If children can cycle or be towed around in a way that is protected from traffic, then safety stops being an inhibitor to their cycling. I believe this is the best path forward to reverse Victoria’s cycling gender gap and making BTWW a celebration for men and women cyclists equally. Karen Quine, Vic West

Tap into a trail near you. The CRD has installed new, accessible fountains along the Regional Trails. Take a break, rehydrate or get fresh water for your pets. Be sure to snap a photo using the new fountains and enter the Tap Into Trails photo contest to be entered to win great prizes.
Some day soon the rain will stop, and we will venture outdoors to do dour bit in making Victoria “the Garden City”. Before setting out to tame your own personal wilderness, stop and think about your eyes (and other body parts). Pruning and trimming can be hazardous. A branch snapping back and hitting the eye can cause mechanical damage and possibly toxic reaction or infection. A projectile, from a weedeater or lawnmower, Dr. Paul Neumann can also cause serious damage to your body. Perhaps you use an arsenalOptometrist or herbicides and pesticides to help control your garden? Or you have a OPTOMETRY CLINIC www.cseyecare.com pool which requires chlorine? These chemicals aren’t eye-friendly either. If you do splash a chemical in the #1 - 7865 Patterson Rd. Saanichton eye, flush the eye immediately with vast, huge, enormous quantities of clean cold water; then go to Emergency if necessary. The good news is that eye protection is simple and inexpensive. Safety glasses and goggles that fit over prescription glasses are all that is required, and you can find them in your local hardware store. Our local eye surgeons would rather spend their weekends with their families than treating ocular injuries that are easily prevented. Have a happy and safe spring and summer.

their daughters what to put on TV. I don’t think they’ve got the message that people live on their phones now and don’t care about telly as much.” Whether or not his fans drop the phone and pick up a book will be revealed with the imminent release of his book, thick with Proopsiness: “ancient history, literature, words, politics, feminism” – a project that, after having received the initial notes from his editor, has him considering offing himself. “I didn’t want to do a book like all the other comics, where they talk about their life. I don’t have a dog, so what’s there to say, really?” Proops and Stiles will have all kinds of things to say – though much lighter, none of Proops’ “French Revolution, offwith-their-heads” ideas June 6 at the McPherson Playhouse for On the Couch. The improvised show is more laid back than Whose Line is it Anyway – an exchange between two improvisors who have an incredible amount of trust in each other. “I think we started working together in 1990 and I don’t know what year it is now, but it’s been a while. We’ve been on the road together for 15 years. I think by this point it’s second nature.” arts@mondaymag.com

A self-professed aging, bitter hipster and poisoned liberal, fresh off the plane, receives a bottle of wine in his New York hotel room. The unexpected gesture saves The Smartest Man in the World from at least one item on his to-do list. Now all the delightfully lushed up and unapologetically opinionated L.A. comedian Greg Proops has left to cross off includes: Touring his wildly popular The Smartest Man in the World Proopcast; Writing his first book, The Smartest Book in the World; Touring On the Couch and Whose Live Anyway? with comic cohort Ryan Stiles; Challenging misogynist views, the
tyranny of the rich and the support of war. They’re all topics the frenetically verbose improvisor won’t be afraid to tackle, along with a host of other current affairs that matter to him, while on tour this spring. “I find a lot of chitchat about personal lives effluvium and jettison. When I do my standup and on my podcast, I’m way more political. I’ve gotten to the age where I can barely tolerate what’s going on in the world anymore,” Proops says. “I want a little substance.” That the debonaire gent is even making money off the free podcast is something he sees as a victory. Add to that, his audience willingly follows along through the “boring preachy part” of his show, through the rants, jokes and diatribes to an hour-anda-half of pure Proops – and he’s a happy man. “Here’s my revenge on everybody: Ryan (Stiles)’s son loves my podcast! He’s a teenager. He’s like collegeaged and he listens to it all the time. I find that a lot of revenge on friends my age is that their teenaged children or children in their 20s love my show. And I’m a 54-year-old comedian, which proves that everyone’s wrong. ... TV executives have to ask

BC Hydro pole replacement ramps up Hundreds of wooden power poles will be replaced in the coming months across Victoria, as part of BC Hydro’s ongoing maintenance program. The poles have a lifespan of 40 to 50 years, and can be weakened by adverse weather, insects and other wildlife during that time. Affected residents are always contacted during pole replacements in case of short-term power outages, said a BC Hydro spokesperson. More than 10,000 of the roughly 900,000 wooden utility poles across B.C. will be replaced this year. The network carries 56,000 kilometres of distribution lines.

Water Conservation Tip: Let your grass go golden. Most people are actively finding ways to conserve water. You can make a difference too. Lawns not watered in the summer will go dormant or ‘golden’. Lawns will green up again with the autumn rains. For more water-saving tips, visit www.crd.bc.ca/water, or call 250.474.9684.
