Students may stage their own protest today Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
The student “pawns” in the contract dispute between the province and teachers are expected to make a bold move today. Students across B.C., including Campbell River, are being encouraged to walk out of school at 9 a.m. and to spend the day out of class protesting the dispute. “The students in British Columbia have been put in the middle of the labour dispute between the BCTF (B.C. Teachers’ Federation) and the government for our entire schooling. For some of us, that means our entire 13 years of education.” That’s just an excerpt from the new Facebook page “BC Student Walkout
for Students.” The student protest movement is being driven by social media which also includes the Twitter site @BCWalkout2014. Students are being asked to protest the entire school day and to make their own placards, “but make sure that what is said on them neither supports the BCTF nor the government.” In Campbell River, the student protest may take place at middle and secondary schools. As for the teachers, they continue rotating strikes around the province. The second strike day for the Campbell River school district is this Friday. Parents and guardians are being told to keep kids at home. For local updates from the board, visit www.sd72.bc.ca
Drinking water supply at risk of interruption KRisten douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Coun. Larry Samson is concerned there’s no back-up plan should the city’s new drinking water system fail. The city is building a new water intake that will allow the city to continue to draw its drinking water from John Hart Lake. But it involves a single line and Samson is worried that if something were to go wrong, the city would be
cut off from its drinking water supply. “We should be looking at an emergency water supply in the event of an interruption,” Samson said at last week’s council meeting. “The interruption can be natural, it can be man-made, it can be mechanical – it can be for a number of reasons.” Samson said it’s important the city come up with a plan B. He suggested options that could Continued on Pg. 4

Businesses thank firefighters Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Less than a year after fire damaged three downtown businesses, the trio gave thanks to the Campbell River Fire Department for saving the buildings. Last Thursday, White Hat Drycleaners and Commercial Laundry, Stonehouse Teas and St. Jean’s Cannery and Smokehouse opened their doors for a celebratory evening during a Campbell River Chamber of Commerce Business Mixer event. The open houses gave the business owners a chance to show off their smart renovations and new equipment, and to give thanks. Just after midnight on June 22, 2013, fire broke out in the lobby of White Hat. The blaze gutted the business and damaged the neighbouring businesses on either side.

Healthy may market activity paves the way for strong summer sales Sales activity across the Vancouver Island housing market area continued its upward swing this May, paving the way for a strong summer market.
A total of 485 single-family homes were sold on the MLS system in the VIREB coverage area in May 2014. This represents a 34.7 per cent increase over the 451 sales recorded last month, and an eight per cent increase over sales recorded last year at this time. Inventory levels continue to remain slightly lower than last year, with active listings down
approximately two per cent. According to VIREB president, Blair Herbert, the lower inventory has not had much of an impact on pricing trends, as home prices have remained relatively stable. The benchmark price for a single-family home in the Campbell River area was $261,800, down 2.35 per cent over this time last year; in the

and cisterns that serve the airport. Samson said the first step is to determine the volume of water needed to sustain the city until the main water supply is back up and running should the main system fail. “I think it’s important that we identify what is our minimum water flows to maintain our critical infrastructure – our hospitals, our firefighting capabilities, our residential care facilities – and once we determine our demand, how do we best address that,” Samson said. To get the ball rolling, Samson put forth at the May 27 council meeting a motion directing city staff to report on options for maintaining an emergency water supply. Council approved the initiative. The city currently shares its drinking water supply system with BC Hydro, drawing water from John Hart Lake which is delivered via three penstocks at the John Hart Generating Station to the city’s water treatment facility. However, BC Hydro will be removing the penstocks and replacing them with a more seismically sound single tunnel as part of the utility’s John Hart upgrade project. That’s left the city to come up with a new way of drawing its drinking water from John Hart Lake. Council budgeted $10.67 million for the project, with funding coming from a combination of BC Hydro grant monies and the city’s accumulated water surplus. In April, council approved an additional $303,967 for further engineering services after the city’s original water intake plan ran into logistical and financial challenges.

Billowing black smoke was visible for kilometres Friday evening when a boat went up in flames at Discovery Harbour Marina. Campbell River firefighters were called to the marina around 7 p.m. The stern of the vessel Andron was fully engulfed by the time they arrived and, fortunately, no one was hurt. “The first crew used the marina’s fire department standpipe system, which provides an efficient means to supply water for firefighting along the marina fingers, and nearby mariners assisted in moving other vessels away from the fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Vrabel. One other vessel was damaged as a result of the fire, and damage estimates have yet to be determined. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The billowing smoke

That’s when an officer noticed a boat approaching the dock which had beer cans littered on the deck. When the Mountie spoke to the operator, he noticed the man was impaired. The 64-year-old Campbell River man was arrested taken the RCMP detachment where he refused to provide a breath sample. As a result, he’s now facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vessel and failing to provide a breath sample.

Councillor’s pipe dream is to help Willow Creek
www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRivermirror.com

An old Telus pipe is causing problems for fish in Willows Creek, according to one councillor. And he wants it removed. Coun. Larry Samson said Telus does not appear to have any plans for the piece of infrastructure and at last week’s Tuesday’s council
meeting he tasked city staff with coming up with ways to deal with the pipe. “The timeline is winding down on removing this infrastructure prior to the pink (salmon) run which comes in sometime in late August,” Samson said. “So I thought asking staff for a report gives us a definite conclusion on what Telus is planning to do.” The pipe is a conduit
with Telus cables and wires inside of it and it’s encased in concrete. It’s one of three pipes – two are old city pipes – that lie below the bridge that crosses Willow Creek along the South Island Highway near Rona. Mayor Walter Jakeway said he believes the pipe, which becomes a little waterfall in the creek, will be too difficult for Telus to remove.
City taking a crack at derelict buildings Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
The city will be cracking down on vacant buildings. Council has approved changes to its public nuisance bylaw that will require owners to register their empty buildings with the city. The idea came from resident Darlyne Shane who suggested council adopt a vacant building registry similar to the city of Penticton’s. Shane was one of five people who spoke during a public hearing April 29, designed for council to gather feedback on the city’s public nuisance bylaw. The city’s Advisory Planning and Environment Commission considered Shane’s suggestion and recommended council require registration and permitting of vacant buildings. “ T he c om m iss i on

reviewed the issue of a d d i ng re g u l at i ons regarding vacant buildings to the public nuisance bylaw and felt that such regulations would be useful,” said Coun. Ryan Mennie, chair of the commission. “However, various commission members expressed the following concerns be taken into consideration – posting vacant buildings may attract vandals (and) the vacant building registry should not be posted on the city website.” In addition to having an inventory of all vacant buildings, the bylaw will also require all openings on vacant buildings to be in good repair and locked or covered. There will also be standards of maintenance for outdoor walls and roofs that will have to be met and the bylaw will likely dictate for routine building inspections. The
commission suggested that in addition to those requirements, that businesses that leave buildings empty be required to take down their signs. That’s welcome news to Shane, who believes the time for a more aggressive approach to dealing with vacant buildings is now. “Do not think that we become inured to the sight of these vacant buildings day after day, year after year,” Shane said during the April public hearing. “I can assure you that local residents and visitors do notice, on a daily basis. “I realize that Campbell River does not yet have an overwhelming number of vacant buildings and, therefore, I believe now is the time to introduce the process in order to allow for fine-tuning regarding registration, standards and inspection.”

“In talking to the stream keepers they think that building little steps, a fish ladder device, is probably the easiest way, because for them to remove that pipe is going to be a major, major deal,” Jakeway said. “I suspect that’s what staff ’s going to find
out. It’s a really hard one to remove and at low water it’s a problem. The fish can’t get over it.” Samson agreed the pipe poses a problem for the salmon and said that he wants staff ’s report to not only include ideas for removing the pipe but ways to protect the fish

Our View
If nothing else, it’s a reminder of who’s most affected So now the school labour dispute has reached the students. Of course, they were affected before but now a portion of them are seeing fit to become actively involved in the issue by staging a walkout of We say: Today’s their own today. While we applaud young people student-led taking an interest in the world, it’s hard walkout reflects a to judge what impact this will have on the dispute. Actually, it will have no bad situation impact on the dispute, the effect will be on the students who will be forced to take a stand on an issue in which they are the innocent third party.
The dispute has been likened to a family going through a divorce. The parents in this case have been feuding for years. In fact, have they ever gotten along? This couple has been through mediation numerous times and still they end up throwing dishes at each other. Students are conflicted about whether they should participate in the protest. Opinions run the whole gamut from “waste of time” to “take a stand.” Teachers might be wishing they could be treated like any other unionized worker in conflict with their employer but, unfortunately, they can’t. The government, meanwhile, wants the teachers and the public to roll over
to their own – usually politicized – priorities when it comes to managing education. The students truly are caught in the middle and now some of them are trying to exert some pressure of their own in order to expedite a settlement. It’s the graduating students that have the most to lose here. Actions at this time of the school year and their school careers, have a dramatic impact on students’ futures. That they are angry at being shoved aside is justified. So, they take up picket signs and stage walkouts. It will not lead to a settlement but it is certainly worthwhile reminding both sides of the dispute who has the most to lose.

Taxpayers deserve better I just feel compelled to get a couple things off my chest in which I feel the city is charging me more and giving me less. The yard waste totally ticks me off and everyone I talk to as well. Not having any yard waste pickup from May 23 to September is totally absurd and as a taxpayer this is one service that I feel should be provided during that period even if it means a little extra taxes to provide the service. I personally strive to keep my yard and its surroundings neat and tidy and I end up with four garbage cans of grass and weeds weekly whether I like it or not. Most people would have something similar and most people have no truck or no trailer to haul this to the yard waste site. This lack of service is a huge takeaway and nothing the city does makes me more upset that losing this service. What will it take to provide this service during the summer? Do we need a petition or a tax increase? Take a walk down many of the trails bordered by residential housing and there is yard waste scattered everywhere once the service is discontinued as witnessed last year. Seriously, how many households actually have a truck or trailer to haul their waste away? I would say maybe 25 per cent and that means 75 per cent of your taxpayers have no place to take this stuff and Continued on Pg. 9

Making Campbell River into a cycling city
Alistair Taylor
Out On A Limb @AlstrT
editor@campbellrivermirror.com
With Bike to Work Week put back onto the rack for another year, it’s worth taking a few minutes to reflect on the role of the bike in Campbell River. There’s little to stop Campbell River from becoming a major bike commuting community, other than the fact we love to use our big comfy, gas-guzzling cars, SUVs and pick up trucks to get to work. It takes me seven minutes to get to work from my home by car. It takes 35 by bike. Ask any Vancouverite if they’d be happy with getting to work in half an hour and you know they would. So, the time factor involved in bicycle commuting for anyone living within Campbell River city limits is negligible. The biggest challenge for cycle commuting is the climate. There are dedicated cyclists pedaling to work each
morning all year ‘round but you can’t deny that rain is a significant deterrent. It certainly is for me. But we have it good compared to the rest of the country. Our climate is mild enough to make yearround cycling feasible. It’s just a matter of being hardy enough. Luckily, cycling is something you can make into a habit. Build up your tolerance of colder temperatures and wet conditions like you build up your physical conditioning. The other deterrent to cycling in the community is also overcome by conditioning. I refer to the hilly terrain, specifically the big bump in the middle upon which Dogwood Street sits. Luckily, if you work downtown and live in Willow Point or further south, you can ride in on the Old Island Highway and things are relatively flat until you get to Hidden
Harbour. But if you work on Dogwood like me, you can’t avoid the early morning hill climb up to the Second Avenue area. Campbell River’s street grid is compatible with cycling, with a couple of exceptions that can be avoided. There are designated bike lanes on the Old Island Highway and the city is promoting routes that can keep you off busy streets like Dogwood. There are some bicycle routes that aren’t on roads, like the bike path through the Beaver Lodge Lands. But the Beaver Lodge Lands provides the best detour from city streets, namely the main rail trail with cuts straight through the Beaver Lodge Forest and runs nearly from one end of the. The only things you have to worry about are pedestrians, a few loose dogs and the
occasional black bear. Becoming a major cycling city wouldn’t require much in the way of building new infrastructure. The street grid is already there, it would just be a matter of painting some bike lanes on the streets and educating riders and drivers about sharing the road. The city has incorporated bicycles into its Master Transportation Plan. It calls for a mix of existing, upgraded and new routes which are enhanced with signage and some physical facilities – like covered bike racks at strategic places. None of it looks particularly capital intensive. You’re not building new road infrastructure, just adapting the existing one. The biggest adaptation will be in the mindset of commuters. People just need to convince themselves of the benefits of cycle commuting and it can happen.

During this time of unrest in our school system, I feel compelled to share with you some of the ways in which the BCPSEA ‘lock out’ will impede me from doing my job as a primary/ elementary class teacher in SD72. My Grade 2/3 classroom is a learning environment where the setup of the room is crucial
to student learning. Daily routines are based around carefully designed areas of the classroom, such as the reading/library corner, the word wall, displays of student work and math resources and manipulatives. Under the current terms of the government’s lock out I will not be permitted sufficient
time to maintain this learning environment to its usual high standard. On a typical day I spend at least an hour before and after school and half of my lunch break getting the room ready for daily lessons. Forty-five minutes before and after school with no time in class during recess and lunch break will allow, at best, for a
cursory tidy up. Beyond this, I was left speechless to discover that I will not be able to take my class on a field trip to the Discovery Passage Aquarium since it will overlap with recess and lunch time when I am not permitted to work, so I would be in violation of the terms of the Lockout. To disregard the terms
would mean risking disciplinary measures from my employer. In addition, I may not have the protection of WCB during that time. Under the BCTF job action, I would be at liberty to volunteer my recess and lunch hour to facilitate this valuable educational experience for my students. would also have an
hour before and after school plus recess and lunch break to spend in my classroom, as needed. You will note that I say ‘my class’ and ‘my students.’ This is common language amongst teachers, such is the dedication to the children we educate and this vocation we have chosen to follow. So I want you to know
that it is the government, through the employer representative, that is creating a situation that leaves me with concerns regarding the quality of teaching/learning for my students and I am sure the situation is repeated many times throughout our district and, indeed, our province. Carol Graham Campbell River
First let me express my dismay at the stated $250K price tag for installing traffic control lights at Petersen and 14th. I would like to assume that any astute council would challenge that cost and demand a cost review and/or a second opinion. Second, let me throw in my support for Mayor Jakeway’s challenge to this proposal and for questioning the need for traffic control
lights at that intersection. Although I am not a traffic engineer, my opinion is that there are many other intersections in Campbell River that are in greater need for traffic control lights than Petersen and 14th. If there truly is a traffic safety problem at this intersection wouldn’t installing a four-way stop be a much cheaper and just as effective a solution? It certainly works well in other moderate traf-
fic intersections around Campbell River. If council has a quarter of a million dollars that they feel they need to spend on an automatic traffic control system, I would suggest that they focus their attention on the entrance to the Maritime Heritage Centre parking lot off Island
Highway. The parking lot at the Maritime Heritage Centre is without question one of the most awkward and dangerous areas in Campbell River to access and exit. In the 10 years that I have been frequenting the area the combined traffic for the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Public Pier, and
the Government Dock has put large demands on the uncontrolled intersection at Island Highway (Pier Street). And of course, on Sundays with the Farmer’s Market, the area is an absolute zoo and an accident looking for a place to happen. And last year, the welcome addition of
the Aquarium to the area has exacerbated the traffic and safety issues and added further justification for a traffic control system and changes to access to the area. The Maritime Heritage Centre/Government Dock/Public Pier/ Aquarium area is clearly a focal point for Camp-
bell River and for tourists who visit our beautiful City and surrounds. Perhaps Council would do well to recognize the area for what it is and for what it contributes to our community and give its access and safety some well deserved priority. Marv Everett, Campbell River

for so little service. This city is all about taking away what we really need and on the other hand just taxing us to death, pardon the expression. I am seriously making plans to move out of this beautiful city because of some of the moronic decisions I have witnessed in the last several years. That being said that I totally feel for Mayor Jakeway who I believe has the right ideal but constantly has to butt heads with his seriously out of touch council members. Joe Greif Campbell River
There are better places to spend a quarter of a million dollars
Waste: Planning to move therefore no incentive to even cut their grass or pull their weeds. Can you advise what can be done about this issue? Also I was out at the yard waste site this morning and there was a 10 minute wait to get in and it was a gong show. Little old ladies packing yard waste in the trunks of their cars. If it was raining it would be a complete mudhole in there as well. I am extremely disappointed in this city to cause this much hardship to all homeowners who pay ridiculous taxes

Crime Stoppers recognized for job well done “ Kristen Douglas
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell River Crime Stoppers recovered more stolen property last year than any other similarsized B.C. community when it comes to dollars and cents. For its efforts, the non-profit organization was honoured with the Milestone Award which is given to the community, with a population
of less than 100,000, that retrieves the most stolen goods. “Campbell River returned in excess of $81,000 in stolen property, which was the highest among communities under 100,000,” said Coun. Larry Samson. The award was handed out at the B.C. Crime Stoppers’ annual general meeting in Kamloops recently. But it wasn’t
the only award the Campbell River branch took home. Crime Stoppers coordinator Pat Patterson was awarded Coordinator of the Year in recognition of all of his hard work over the past year. Samson said it’s a testament to a job well done. “It’s a very good news story for our local Crime Stoppers people and the excellent work that they do,” Samson said.
THEY SAID IT: “Campbell
River returned in excess of $81,000 in stolen property.”
– Coun. Larry Samson
Last year was Crime Stoppers’ most successful year in the organization’s 23 year history in
Campbell River. Crime Stoppers seized $167,950 in stolen property and drugs and the tip line received 372 calls with 297 tips. Of those, 28 resulted in arrests and 43 charges being laid as well as 44 cases cleared. Rob Harris, Crime Stoppers president, said the increase in tips and property recovered is thanks to the use of social media.

“This success was accomplished with the help of our media friends getting the word out, as well as extensive use of Facebook, Twitter and our Crime Stoppers website,” Harris said. “We tweeted 429 times, posted 400 times on Facebook and our website was viewed over 253,004 times.” Since Campbell River Crime Stoppers was established in October
1990, it has received more than 4,526 tips resulting in $343,337 in stolen property recovered and $8.8 million in illicit drugs being destroyed. Crime Stoppers allows people who may have knowledge of a crime or a potential crime to report tips anonymously. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards up to $2,000 for tips that lead to an arrest.

Rats! Whose drugs are these? Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
There’s no law saying you can’t walk around with two pet rats in your pockets. But if you’re also allegedly carrying a bit of cocaine and a prohibited weapon, well, that will get you arrested. That’s what happened to Damon Galye in the early morning hours of March 21 when a patrolling police officer spotted a man walking down the middle of 7th Avenue. It was about 3:40 a.m. when the Mountie stopped Galye, who is known to authorities. The Campbell River man has a two-page criminal record and was on a probation order when he was questioned by the officer. Galye was carrying two live pet rats in his pockets. It is also alleged that Galye was found with .1 gram of a substance that appeared to be cocaine, one beer and a working flashlight/stun gun. He was arrested for breaching terms of his 18-month probation order and later released from custody, but police were still keeping a close eye on him due to a tip they received. On March 5, an informant told Mounties that a man named Damon and his girlfriend were
selling “down” – a euphemism for heroin – through a dial-a-dope operation. The tipster also provided police with a phone number. On April 16, at 6:50 p.m., a plain clothes officer in an unmarked police cruiser observed a white Pontiac with Ontario licence plates on 2nd Avenue. The car looped around the block and left a residence that is known to police. Naturally suspicious, the officer followed the car, called in the plates and found out the vehicle was uninsured. The Mountie continued to trail the vehicle which pulled over to the roadside where Galye was waiting. Galye got into the car which then proceeded towards 7th Avenue. Believing a drug deal was taking place, the officer followed the suspects into the Jolly Giant convenience store and saw
Galye clutching a handful of bills. Galye threw something onto the ground and after a very brief struggle, was arrested. The officer recovered about $200, found another $800 in Galye’s possession, and also picked up a baggie containing three “spitballs” with small amounts of heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested and told the officer he had intended to buy $100 worth of heroin and another $100 of cocaine. The driver’s infant son was also in the car when the bust occurred. A cell phone was also recovered and the number matched the number that was provided by the police informant. Galye has been in custody since then in Victoria. On Monday, he appeared by video in Campbell River provin“One call, and we’ll do it all”

cial court for a bail hearing. Both the provincial and federal Crown prosecutors asked the judge to detain him based on his previous criminal record and due to his arrests while on probation. However, defence lawyer James Hormoth outlined a plan that led to Galye’s release. According to Hormoth and Galye’s mother, he realizes he has a drug problem and wants to seek meaningful help. Judge Ron Lamperson agreed to release Galye, but on strict conditions
which includes a $2,000 surety. Galye will reside with his mother and is under house arrest. He’s able to see his probation officer, lawyer, his drug and alcohol counsellor, and to attend Narcotics’ Anonymous meetings. As well, when a bed opens, Galye will enter a 90-day drug rehabilitation program. “I may be going out on a limb, but I’ll give him one chance,” the judge said. Galye is due back in court on June 16 to set trial dates.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY When Don’t-Pay deals don’t pay off Trevor Despins
CFP, STI, CPCA Financial Consultant
You’re in the market for a big ticket item like renovation materials or a major appliance and then you see an advertisement for just what you need with a headline like this: NO MONEY DOWN, NO PAYMENTS OR INTEREST FOR 12 MONTHS. Well, that certainly is enticing – but ‘don’t pay’ deals can end up costing you a lot more than you bargained for if you aren’t aware of all the terms and conditions attached to them. Deferred payment options are a popular promotional tool for many retailers, and an uninformed consumer can get hit with some hefty fees if the purchase item isn’t paid off within the promotional period. Even if just one cent is left unpaid after the payment due date, you will usually be charged interest on the whole amount of your original purchase. And because most ‘don’t pay’ deals are financed through financial institutions, they usually involve accepting a retail credit card with annual interest rates often in the 20 to 30% range. As well, most of these promotions include
additional administration or merchant fees (except in Québec) that can amount to $100 or more and are tacked on at the moment you make your purchase.
4x10
Here are two typical examples of ‘don’t pay’ deals that look good until you read the small print. 1. Promotion: • No interest if paid in full within six months • Minimum $299 purchase No annual fee, merchant fee or administration fee
investors group Small print: • Annual interest rate of 28.8% • Interest accrues from purchase date and is waived if each minimum monthly payment is made by due date and the purchase price is paid in full by the plan expiration date • If no payments are made or the balance is not paid by the expiration date, interest will be charged at 28.8% per annum. 2. Promotion: • 18 months, no payment, no interest • Minimum $250 purchase • No interest accrues during the promotional period.
Small print: • Annual interest rate of 29.9% • Merchant fee of $129.95 is added to the purchase • No interest accrues and no payments required during the promotional period • If the balance is not paid in full by the promotional due date, the unpaid balance is converted to a regular credit card purchase • A preferred rate will apply at 29.9% on the outstanding balance and a deferral fee of $42.50 will be charged • Minimum monthly payments of greater of 3.5% of the outstanding balance or $10 are due.
It pays to look very carefully into ‘don’t pay’ deals before you sign on the dotted line. Take the same care with your overall financial life by getting good advice from your professional advisor.

HUBBARD, ROBERT FAY
INFORMATION
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Fay Hubbard, on May 17,2014, in Kelowna B.C. Dad was born in Montana, moved to Canada as a young child, served in the Canadian army, and then carved out a life for himself here in B.C. He is predeceased by his wife, Sue, son Bob, brother Roy and sister Helen. He leaves behind son, Ray with grandson Hazen, granddaughters Nicki and Avril, 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves a daughter Lynda, husband Michael, with granddaughters Roberta, Carolyn and Heather and 12 great grandchildren who all knew him as Grampa Charley. He was very proud of all his family and enjoyed being grampa and great grampa. He leaves behind a brother Ray, and nieces Laverne and Molly and their families. In Kelowna he is predeceased by brother-in-law Hazen and sister-in-law Barbara. His many nephews and neices in the Okanagan area have been very helpful and supportive and took time to keep him company and be part of their lives. This was much appreciated by Ray and Lynda. He had many friends in Kelowna who will miss him as well. He enjoyed being ‘taxi’ driver to many of the ladies he drove to the luncheons at the Salvation Army on Wednesdays. The Kentucky fried chicken, fish and chips, and ice cream that he shared with family, and the many ‘projects’ he had on the go with help from family and friends kept him busy and active, enjoying life. He will be missed by all who knew him. There will be a service by the Salvation Army followed by a tea/coffee on July 4th, 2014 at 2 p.m. at 1480 Sutherland St., Kelowna and all who knew him are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to a charity of your choice in Bob’s name. Cremation Arrangements in care of Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium, (250) 860-6440.

The Quadra Island Golf course raises $500 for the Quadra Children’s Centre. With sincere appreciation to its members and guests, the QI Golf Course charged an entry fee of $5 per person for a round of 9 holes. Every member and guest that played was delighted to contribute. Some generous individuals contributed more! We even received donations from non-golfers. At the end of each 9 hole round, golfers handed in their score cards and the Children from the children’s centre crafted the trophies for the highest and lowest gross score for the day. Congratulations to Pat Manery who was tied with Jim Graham but won the lowest gross score of 38 on a count back. Congratulations to Neely McGovern for the highest gross score of lots. Everyone enjoyed the day and the trophies made by the children were inspirational. Looking for ways to raise funds or to incorporate FUN and teambuilding for your organization or business? Consider hosting a 9 or 18 hole golf tournament! We have a driving range, practice green and a fantastic golf course in a natural outdoor setting for your event. We have plenty of rental clubs, pull carts or power carts along with the facility for your BBQ afterwards. The options are endless. Call us today and we’ll help you to organize a fun, enjoyable outing for your group! Check out the tournament package on our website: www.quadragolf.com/tournaments.php or speak directly to the Golf Course staff at 250-287-6366. The golf course is always willing to package with local resorts and restaurants to draw more people to the Island. Contact them to discuss these opportunities if you are interested.
