Students walk out in strike protest By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Local 4-H club members Cassi Sauder and Elizabeth Froe had their hands full of young piglets at the Langley District 4-H Rally held Saturday, May 31 at Aldor Acres farm in Glen Valley.
Students at the majority of Langley middle and high schools were expected to walk out of class on Wednesday morning ( June 4) at 9 a.m., as part of a B.C.wide student protest of the ongoing teacher/government labour dispute. “Students are showing the teachers that their protest is effecting us students, our grades, exams and extra curricular activities,” said one Aldergrove student. “We are not trying to take sides. We just want them all to know that our education is being messed with,” said Hailey, a Grade 8 student at Betty Gilbert. “Our grades matter, the end of the year is really important for exams,” she said. Already 10,000 students across B.C. have said they will join the walk out on a Facebook page started by a student who feels they are being “caught in the middle” like “parents who are divorc-
ing.” Students also walked out in 2012, when they were the casualties of the teacher/ government contract dispute then. The student walkout is being sparked by a Grade 12 student from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale. Victoria Barker said she is frustrated by how students are being caught in the middle of the dispute, and said Grade 12 students are in a particularly challenging situation, with final exams looming and many planning to go on to post-secondary studies in September. She said students from across the province have been in touch, and many walkouts are planned. Wednesday is the only day teachers aren’t on strike this week across the province. Teachers in Langley took to the streets instead of the classrooms on Monday, in the second round of rotating strikes. As the school year comes closer to an end, there
appears no resolution is in sight. The government is locking out high school teachers on June 25 and 26 and all teachers on June 27, the last day of school. Langley school trustees had to change venues, but their board of education meeting went ahead Monday evening. The board meeting was to take place at Township hall at 7 p.m. The venue change was to address the teachers’ strike action that day. Already, the original meeting that was scheduled for May 27 was cancelled when the B.C. Teachers Federation announced Langley schools would be behind picket lines that day. The board has yet to say anything about the teachers’ dispute. Meanwhile, parents and students are scrambling to know what events and exams will be impacted by the ongoing dispute. There appears to be no SEE: Page 3
Fundraiser for victims of Langley barn fire By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
A Langley family has lost everything as a result of the Sunday ( June 1) fire that killed 17 horses, most of them standardbred racers. Bill and Laurie Davis were described as a “prominent horse racing family” in Langley with over 35 years of experience by Tanis Pearson. “They are leaders in the racing industry and pioneers in their exceptional horsemanship,” said Pearson,
a family friend who is acting as spokesperson for the Davises. “They’re such a phenomenal family. They’re a household name.” In addition to the loss of the 17 horses, including a miniature pony, the fire destroyed about $100,000 worth of gear, Pearson said. “This is such a huge tragedy.” A trust fund has been set up to help the family rebuild. Donations can be made to “The Davis Family Trust” at any Aldergrove Credit Union.

The organizers are also searching for prizes and sponsors for the event.
Pearson said donated equipment for harness racing, such as buckets, halters, stall gates, fly masks, sprays, grooming kits, any of the items necessary for horse ownership, can be dropped at A & T Equestrian. She said offers of assistance have been coming in from across the country. “The family is very humbled and appreciative of the generosity and This photo released by the Davis family the outreach from the community,” shows the pony that died in the June 1 Pearson said. “It is overwhelming fire nuzzling one of its larger stablemates. and amazing.”

Upheaval unsettles students at exam time FROM FRONT:
end in sight to the labour dispute. Teachers continue to strike and the government began its partial lockout. A full lockout of all high school teachers starts on June 25 and 26, and then all teachers on June 27. Final exams are held on June 25 and 26, but the government claims those will still go ahead. Provincial exams apparently are also said to go ahead, unless teachers are striking that day. There is much confusion about who is making that decision. Teachers say the government locked them out and told them they weren’t allowed to do any extra activities. According to the BC Public School Employers’ Association’s letter on May 26, posted on the Langley School District website under Teacher Bargaining Update,
the partial lockout should not prevent teachers from continuing their involvement with student extracurricular programs or other volunteer activities, even if they fall within school hours, like in recess. The BCPSEA also claims that the lockout shouldn’t prevent teachers from participating in any grad or end-ofschool events either. “At best, everything is uncertain. It’s tricky for everyone to understand. Both sides are saying two different things,” said Langley school district spokesperson Ken Hoff on Thursday. A letter to parents from school superintendent Suzanne Hoffman thanks teachers and staff for keeping learning a “priority during these challenging times.” On Thursday, WorkSafe BC refuted the BCTF’s claim that teachers wouldn’t be cov-
ered during recess and lunch under the lockout guidelines. The BCTF president had said earlier that is why he directed teachers to not participate in anything outside the classroom. But in the meantime, the government is directing teachers not to arrive early or stay later during the work day, and then docking each teacher’s pay 10 per cent each day. The government is also saving millions of dollars for every day teachers are on strike because they aren’t being paid. Teachers are asking for a 15 per cent raise over four years and changes to class composition. The needs of special needs students overshadow regular students, and teachers feel overburdened. The Ministry of Education is refusing, so far, to look at class composition or the need for more SEAs in classrooms.

Betty Gilbert Middle School in Aldergrove was among Langley schools closed Monday, June 2, for the second time in two weeks, due to pickets by teachers and support staff in the ongoing contract dispute with the provincial education ministry.
Parents advisory councils call for end to school dispute Aldergrove Star
The organization representing public school parent advisory councils is calling for an immediate end to the teacher strike and lockout out of concern for students and families in the province.
BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) president Terry Berting stated in a press release that the “feud” between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the government is having a detrimental effect on students, particularly those
most vulnerable, and creating financial hardship for struggling families. The parent group is also concerned about the cancellation of extra-curricular activities, end-of-year celebrations and sporting events in some schools, and is urging the gov-
ernment and the BCTF to concentrate their energies on achieving a new collective agreement. “Successful outcomes for all students — not just those graduating from Grade 12 — are being affected by this labour dispute,” Berting stat-
ed. “This has got to stop.” Parents are also encouraged to write to Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCTF president Jim Iker explaining how the rotating strikes and lockout are affecting families.
Langley Memorial opens new maternity unit Aldergrove Star
This month, Langley Memorial Hospital has a birth announcement of its own to make. After huge fundraising efforts, generous donations from the community and building a third floor onto the hospital, LMH is ready to announce it has a new maternity unit and clinic. The $11.66 million project ensures that all maternity care is on one floor, (the third floor). There will be a dedicated operating room for C-sections. The expansion and relocation will

allow for seven new single maternity care rooms, so new mothers can stay in one room for a continuum of care. The expanded nursery is already complete and being used. There is also a new isolation room. The new space will also be ideal for teaching for UBC medical students and Family Practice residents. To facilitate everything on one floor, the hospital had to build a third storey onto the hospital, which is no easy feat. “When Dr. Chapman and I launched the maternity clinic back in 2004, we knew we were meeting a huge need for the community. The number of beds has increased by just two. The new reality is, there just isn’t enough room at LMH to accommodate the growing community. The number of yearly births is expected to continue to rise to 2,300 over the next seven years. The LMHF also opened up a new 700 space parking lot across from the hospital to accommodate the growing number of people using this busy health facility. and many Langley family businesses followed. Fraser Health committed $6.3 million to the new unit. The maternity unit has been renamed The Vandekerkhove Family Maternity Centre, in recognition of the family’s gift to the campaign. Turning away women in labour is something no staff member at Langley Hospital wants to do, but it had become a frequent occurrence. When the hospital first opened in 1948, 11 beds for the 85 babies born there each year was very sufficient. But today, the number of births has increased to 1,800 on average per year.

of our biggest challenges has been our location in the hospital,” said Dr. Beth Watt, one of the founding physicians of LMH’s maternity clinic. “We started the clinic in one area and have been moved three times. With this expansion, our maternity care is now all on one floor which is very important for our patients and our physicians, nurse and clinicians.” The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation was instrumental in raising $4.1 million so far from their “It All Starts Here” maternity expansion campaign. It was a very emotional afternoon along the Fraser River for six special paddlers who were greeted with drumming, songs and cheers outside Lelem Arts and Cultural Cafe in Fort Langley during the official Spirit of the Coast sendoff on Sunday. Led by professional wilderness guide Chris Cooper, the Spirit of the Coast crew — made up of paddlers from South Africa, England, Scotland, the United States, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia — will travel by canoe for 90 days along the coastline of British Columbia up to Alaska, to bring awareness to the ecology and culture of the land. The group started their 1,300 km canoe trek from Fort Langley in picturesque summer weather, with full bellies from a Kwantlen First Nations feast, and full hearts from a morning ceremonial blessing. Brandon Gabriel, Kwantlen First Nations artist and co-organizer of the event, admits he had no sleep the night prior to the launch. Not only was he up until 3 a.m. painting paddles as gifts to community sponsors, but he

“I’ve spent a lifetime paddling canoes of all sorts all over the world and I really feel strongly that we need to do something for our coast. It’s the jewel of Canada, there’s no doubt about it. We have a treasure chest here. We need to take care of it, we need to leave it for our grandchildren and great grandchildren and many others.” In addition to the environment and ecology of the coastline, Gabriel also wants to bring attention to the local communities and First Nations on the coast. “Our communities are integral to the well being of the precious coastline and despite these big government and big corporate plans for our future along our coast, [there are] voices of opposition, voices of discontent and voices that have an alternative view of these corporate sponsored initiatives that are taking place,” he said. Maritimes feast for Rotary causes Seasonal Local Produce Aldergrove Star
Over 150 lobster lovers attended the Aldergrove Rotary Club’s fourth annual Maritime Dinner on May 10 at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Centre. A fundraiser to support the club’s ongoing dedication to local literacy programs and continued support for community funding requests, the event was delicious,
fun and very successful. Rotarians Jack Froese (Langley Township Mayor) and Bill Storie organized the arrival of 150 fresh Eastern lobsters and served as chefs-du-jour, preparing the delicious crustaceans for the feast. The menu also included roasted chicken, donated by Lilydale and prepared by Bob’s Steakhouse. Other scrumptious dishes includ-
ed contributions by JD Farms, Debbie Froese and Maureen and Rob Robinson, owners of Milsean Shoppe, all accompanied by the very Maritime sounds of Atlantic Duo. By the time the last claw was tossed into the bucket, over $6,900 had been raised from ticket sales, the 50-50 draw and silent auction proceeds.
Serial robber took 11-year-old along Aldergrove Star
A 28-year-old Langley man has been found guilty of robbing seven food stores, mostly in Langley. On one occasion, he took his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter with him. Michael Heatley was found guilty on seven counts of robbery by Supreme Court Judge Josephson after a trial in New Westminster last month. Heatley said the robberies were committed to buy drugs for him and his girlfriend. His girlfriend was originally arrested as an accomplice, because she was with him on most of the robberies as the driver, said the court judgment. The first robbery was on Mother’s Day 2011 at a Langley Subway. He was found guilty of robbing the Subway with his girlfriend and her 11-year-old daughter waiting in the vehicle for him. In the Mother’s Day robbery, Heatley told investigators that he needed money because his girlfriend’s
daughter needed food. According to the court judgment published April 7, the daughter testified at the trial, saying that she had an idea Heatley had committed a robbery because her mother told her he was getting them lunch. Instead he came back with “lots of money” and her mom drove away very quickly. Her mother also asked her to find black gloves for Heatley, which he is believed to have used in the robbery. In each case, Heatley masked his face and sometimes produced a knife, but always wore gloves. He was also found guilty of robbing a Subway in Chilliwack on Aug. 26, 2011. On Aug. 29 he robbed a Booster Juice in Port Moody and then another one in Aldergrove. Heatley told police he was in the area in Aldergrove because his girlfriend was picking up a methadone prescription. The next day he robbed the Langley Booster Juice. Each time
getting away with hundreds of dollars. On Sept. 1, 2011 he robbed a Subway in Surrey. On that same day he robbed the Fox and Hounds liquor store in Aldergrove. He was arrested following that robbery. Heatley’s defence tried to argue that Heatley confessed to the crimes falsely to protect his girlfriend from charges. The judge said what ever the motive, the “resulting confessions were nonetheless reliable.” An unusual aspect of this case is that the accused was under covert police surveillance on Sept. 1, 2011, when the last two robberies occurred. That surveillance was lost during the actual commission of the robberies, but reacquired after the last robbery, at which time the accused and his girlfriend were arrested. In a search of the vehicle they had been driving that day, items were seized which the Crown used as evidence.

VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature. “You’re all a bunch of corrupt liars,” NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons yelled as the government cut off a long and mostly repetitious debate that dominated the final days of the legislature session. Not to be outdone, cabinet minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Bennett’s most vocal supporters as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones. Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person. “She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said. The on-the-record debate wasn’t much better. Columbia River-Revelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald summed up his party’s biggest objection with his charge that “a bunch of Liberal political hacks” will be appointed to regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission. The government’s scheme, Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals, to enrich B.C. Liberal supporters by allowing development on productive farmland.
Farmland fate a test for parties
That might be a valid concern, but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government. It’s been that way since the Dave Barrett administration set it up in 1973. Second, the regional panels are not new. The B.C. Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of corrupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time they would have found enough greedy political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process. I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense. Strict secondary residence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure. In most rural areas, they are a mistake, and are frequently ignored. The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the current system, 75% of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be fixed? It’s a good question that the government did not adequately
answer. And credit also goes to the new agriculture minister, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded performance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm. Braving the heckling at the end, Letnick put aside his partisan talking points and gave his personal assurance that the government’s intention is to support farming in those places where non-farm income is the only thing that keeps people on the land. As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundraising plea to its members to help “save” the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow. Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true. If this does not take place, then the government’s position will be vindicated. We’ll find out the truth. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Editor: It was with considerable incredulity I viewed the remarks made by Councillor Long during the May 12, 2014 afternoon council meeting regarding land exclusion for development in Aldergrove. In making statements supporting yet another developer and land speculator, Councillor Long had this gem to say: “When we went through Brookswood and some of the issues we have got in Willoughby and we heard about who doesn’t want density and who has parking problems; Aldergrove just wishes we had half of those problems”. Did I hear this right? He wishes the Willoughby parking mess on more parts of Langley? I can’t think any reasonable person would want such problems that have even pushed people to park on their lawns for lack of space. And in speaking with residents of Aldergrove, there seems to be very little support for adding ‘significant populations’ to the area. It seems that Councillor Long is showing his colours (again) to be a representative for businesses and their interests instead of the residents and voters whom he is supposed to work for. With his and Councillor Ward’s dismissal of residents (during the Feb 24 council meeting), pushing density and developer friendly planning, it is no wonder some community in the Township is in an uproar with the council every few months. Trevor Nicklason, Aldergrove
Students to walk out in protest of strike action Editor: I’m a grade 11 student attending D.W. Poppy Secondary School. As most up to date people know our teachers are striking, for some good sounding reasons too, but nobody seems to have thought about what students are doing. We are tired of being voiceless and being stuck in between the BCTF and the B.C. Government fighting. This has started to affect our person lives and educations. Exams are being pushed back, and if this is not solved we risk our bright futures. The students are taking a stand and will not stop until our small, yet strong, voices are heard. We have planned a peaceful walkout Wednesday, June 4 at 9 a.m. in which we plan to leave class and meet at the front of our schools to show the teachers and government how much their fighting is affecting us. I have heard my peers compare the BCTF and the BC Government to a pair of fighting divorcing parents. There is a Facebook group that is starting to pick up more attention. Global News and City TV have done articles on our story already and I figured some more publicity could not harm us, after all, we are trying to be heard. I invite you to come by my school to see for yourselves the walkout in action, or stop by any high school and even some elementary schools in Aldergrove, such as ACSS where student say they are participating as well. Katherine Vandrunen, Langley
Wards are the solution to meet local desires Editor: Re: “Long list of Township concerns,” (letter to editor, May 29). One desperate change we need is to move to a ward system, just like the federal and provincial elections. The “at large” system we have now favours re-election of incumbents, as most residents do not know which way any councillor voted on any particular policy. Under a ward system, Fort Langley, Willoughby, Brookswood/Fernridge and Aldergrove ridings would be getting new councillors in November for sure. This would fix most, if not all, of Ann-Michelle de Ruis’ concerns. J. Beauman, Langley

Despite the challenges of cross-border shopping and new gas bar competition in Langley, the Aldergrove-based co-op surpassed last year’s total sales by almost $5 million for a year-end total of $171,954,134. public notices Be Wild Animal Aware The Township of Langley is full of wildlife habitat, and residents share the area with animals including bears, cougars, and coyotes. While residents throughout Langley do not need to be continually on alert, there are a number of actions that can be taken to deter wild animals if they are spotted in your area. Parents are encouraged to educate their children on what to do if they encounter any of these animals, especially if they play by themselves in areas that wildlife frequent or have been seen in the past.

Bears: are looking for food - don’t let them learn it can easily be obtained from humans. Two bears have been seen regularly this spring. If you encounter a bear, do not run. Act big and loud, and back away slowly to a safe place.
Cougars: can have kittens throughout the year, and family groups can be seen at any time. Cougars survive on natural food sources found in the wild, primarily deer. Cougar attacks on humans are highly unlikely. However, if you encounter a cougar, do not run. Pick children up immediately and talk to the cougar in a confident voice. Act big by waving sticks and branches, and back away slowly while still facing the cougar. If it attacks, fight back.
Coyotes: have the largest population of potentially dangerous wildlife in the area and can be seen year round, even in residential areas. Family groups with pups, which are trained to hunt and kill, have been regularly seen around Langley. Coyotes are bold and easily lose their natural fear of people. Never feed a coyote. If you encounter a coyote, scare it off by making loud noise or throwing something at it to make it afraid. Never ignore a coyote. If it continues to approach, do not run. Maintain eye contact, pick up small pets or children, and slowly move to an area of increased activity.
In Residential Areas: Reduce the smell of food by keeping barbecues clean. Keep pet food inside. Garbage is the WARNING biggest attraction for bears so Langley has a large keep it secure and inaccessible to deer population wildlife. Do not leave garbage cans USE CAUTION out overnight: keep them in the ON ROADS house, a locked garage, or secured outbuilding that cannot be broken into by large, smart bears. Put them out only on the morning of collection. If you are worried about odour, keep garbage in the freezer until collection day. Do not use bird feeders, as they attract bears and the birds do not need seeds when other natural food sources are available. This is the time of year to be extra vigilant with small pets, especially cats, in areas where coyotes are around.
In Agricultural Areas: Protect your investment by keeping fences secure and free of damage that predators can use for access. Coyotes burrow, so ensure surrounding netting goes deep into the ground. Use electric fencing to deter bears from blueberries and beehives, and pick berries and fruit as they ripen. Be vigilant with livestock and keep them secure. Farm animals are usually killed at night, so bring them inside in the evening. It is an offence to attract wildlife into a residential neighbourhood. Those who do not take steps to deter bears and other wild creatures can face a fine of up to $575. Renee Doucette with her sons Ryan (left to right), Reagan and Ritchie, and Ritchie’s son Trenton. Without the help of the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, Doucette doesn’t know how she could have afforded to put her three boys into organized sport when they were growing up.
Jumpstart helped mom get her kids in the game By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star
Growing up, sports were always a big part of Renee Doucette’s life. But when she moved to B.C. from Alberta in 2000 as a single mother with her three young sons Ryan, Ritchie and Reagan — who were between the ages of five and eight — times were tough. The boys’ father battled drug addiction which led to the couple breaking up and Renee moving west to start over. With their father not involved in their lives and moving to a place where they had no family, things were not easy. “Needless to say, life was quite a bit of a struggle for us,” Renee said. “And it always has been. “It took me a little while to get back to work and to get back in the swing of things after moving here. “We had what we needed to get by and that was it; there wasn’t room for anything extra. There was not even $5 to put towards sports.” With no registration cost to join a flag football league, she signed up all three boys. But eventually it was going to cost money to keep her kids in organized sport and Renee knew the values she learned from playing as a child. “Sports was a huge part of my childhood and I wanted them to have that mentoring that sports provides and to get out there with other kids,” the Abbotsford resident explained. Sports taught her about self-esteem, independence, strength, camaraderie and mentorship, all things she wanted to instill in her children. Ron Bunting, the principal at Shortreed Elementary in Aldergrove where her boys were students, mentioned the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program as a way to help the family out. Jumpstart is a nationally registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across Canada have the opportunity to get off the sidelines and into the game. According to a Vision Critical 2011 study, one in three Canadian families
cannot afford to enroll their child in organized sport and physical activity. The program is for kids between the ages of four and 18 and helps families with the costs associated with registration, equipment and/or transportation for sports. Jumpstart provides financial assistance for families who can’t afford to enroll their kids in organized sport, and has helped more than 730,000 kids in the past nine years. One hundred per cent of every donation stays in the community in which it was made. With the help of Jumpstart, all three boys played football and baseball. Asking for help can be difficult. “They definitely had to overcome that,” she explained about any stigma about needing help. “It was hard for them to have to use second-hand equipment, it was hard for them to not have the nicer clothes or sports equipment or whatever, but that being said, they all excelled and became better young men because of sports.” They were also helped by the local associations, who sometimes didn’t make them pay the registration costs if the family was short, Renee added. “They never knew how I managed to get them into sports,” Renee said. “That being said, I always made them aware that there was a lot of generosity that made it possible for them.” Reagan, the youngest, excelled the most of the three, especially in football with the Langley Minor Football Association and at Rick Hansen Secondary. The 19-year-old is still involved in football, hoping to play junior this season. And he knows that without Jumpstart, none of this may have happened. “Without Jumpstart and the help of my coaches, I wouldn’t have been able to play,” he said. “I love sports; they definitely give kids who don’t have much something to do. It gives them a purpose and confidence and sports are perfect for that.”
Early May brought showers to dampen the shiny paint jobs but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those attending the 27th annual car show at D.W. Poppy. The car show raised money for school programs through entry donations, participant entry donations, a pancake breakfast by the Fort Langley Lions and a concession from the DWP basketball teams. This year raised about $500 for the shop and automotive department at DWP and an additional $550 for dry grad. D.W.
Poppy would like to offer a special thank you to all visitors to the car show as well as all the sponsors and donors for giving generously and taking part in a truly successful event.

Board of Education
Regular Meeting Tuesday, June 17 • 7 pm School Board Office 4875 222 St. The public is welcome.
Langley School District held the Evening of Inspiration in late May in recognition of the graduating students who inspire us through demonstration of the District’s core values of integrity, excellence, courage and community. The ‘core values’ of the Langley School District came to the fore during the District’s recent re-visioning exercise as well as the new Langley Schools vision to be an innovative, inspiring and unified learning community. Photos are available via the district website at www.sd35.bc.ca. The Langley School District also celebrated Aboriginal Achievement in late May, recognizing students in 12 areas: academic, apprenticeship, athletic ability, attendance, award of excellence, citizenship, fine arts, Golden Eagle Award, leadership, most progress, technology and applied skills and the Warrior Award. Unique to the Aboriginal Achievement Awards are the Golden Eagle Award and the Warrior Award. The Golden Eagle is awarded to those students graduating in June and the Warrior Award is presented to students who show courage and strength in the face of adversity. A number of students were recognized with a combination of achievement awards and the support from friends and family was overwhelming - congratulations!

The Gators combined senior team also found the podium, placing third. The meet was held May 29 to 31 at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.
The local athletes finished with eight gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals and Walnut Grove’s Robyn Buckingham led the way. The Grade 11 athlete won silver long jump and bronze in the javelin. She had captured the silver medal the week before as well in the heptathlon as the multi-sport championships were held May 23/24 in Abbotsford. Buckingham leapt 5.34m in the long jump to take second and her

javelin throw of 39.73m placed her third on the podium. The lone local athlete to find the top of the podium in the senior division at the championships was Langley Christian’s Nickolas Colyn who won gold in the men’s 2000m steeplechase event. Colyn crossed the finish line in 5:59.14, which is even more impressive considering at the 2013 high school provincial championships, he was fifth in a time of 6:14.51. This was one of two medals the Grade 11 student won as he finished third in the men’s 3000m with a time of 8:46.86. He also just missed the podium in the 400m race, finishing fourth. And Walnut Grove’s Chelsea Borrowdale was also a multiple medalwinner as she snagged a pair of silver medals in the women’s 1500m steeplechase and the 3000m run. Borrowdale finished the first event in 5:10.08 and the latter in 10:18.06. Langley Fundamental’s Hannah Beaton took silver in the shot put with a throw of 11.45m, a new personal best. rrr The future of track and field looks promising for Langley athletes as they won seven gold, two silver and five bronze medals at the Grade 8 and junior levels.
Betty Gilbert’s Jonathan Rees won a pair of gold medals in the 800m (2:07.58) and 1500m (4:28.48) events while D.W. Poppy’s Ethan Foster won a gold in the long jump (5.67m) and bronze in the high jump (1.60m). R.E. Mountain’s Jordan Schmidt won silver int he 3000m (10:04.14) and Brookswood’s Kayla Weltzin won bronze in the women’s 3000m (11:25.11). And the Walnut Grove Grade 8 boys relay team of Alex Single, Braden Young, Brandon Sweeney and Michael McKay was third in the 4x400 with a time of 4:04.39. In the junior competition, Langley Saints’ Dean Ellenwood was a double gold-medal winner, taking top spot in both the 400m (48.76m) and 800m (1:54.50) events. Brookswood’s Jaclyn Pauley won gold in the javelin (40.00m) while Louise Forsyth won silver in the triple jump (11.07m). R.E. Mountain’s Lauryn Cheung finished atop the podium in the pole vault (2.70m). Langley Christian’s Kiana Bekar took third in the triple jump (10.28m) and Langley Fundamental’s Megan Champoux won bronze in the 300m hurdles (44.90).

Putting the finishing touches to the magnificent Mustang re-built as has the rear axle. Rick talked Laura out of fitting a modern rack and pinion power steering kit or even upgrading the manual steering box to a power-assisted unit so it will be reliving the Armstrong steering
experience for Laura when parking at low speeds! One safety upgrade is the installation of original Ford front disc-brakes; these are a must in today’s traffic. Collector vehicle drivers are very cautious, invariably when
accidents occur it is the drivers around you that are not paying attention or cutting you off. 360 have done their research and paid a lot of attention to detail during this rebuild, right down to avoiding the tempta-
tion of installing an exhaust system with two tailpipes. Next week, we will explore what exactly a T5 is? How rare they are and explore some of the events that Laura and her brand new old car car will be attending in this 50th
anniversary year of the Ford Mustang. Nigel Matthews is the director of sales and marketing for Hagerty Insurance Canada. nmatthews@hagerty. com

Collie Doodle Puppies (Collie x Poodle) Born Feb 26. Mom is a Rough Collie (45 lbs) and Dad is a small Standard Poodle (50 lbs). Both have health clearances (eyes, hips, elbows). 2 very curly black females avail. We have bred this litter special to create the perfect family companion (intelligent, gentle, easy to train, always willing to please, happy indoors and outdoors, good with children and animals, low to no shed). These puppies will not need a heavy hand to train. They are sweet, kind and sensitive puppies. They will be very similar in looks and in nature to the Golden Doodle only smaller, calmer and will mature sooner. We are a 4H (agility, obedience, showmanship) family and our dogs are a part of our home and life and we wish the same for our puppies. Please consider the time and commitment needed to raise a dog and you will have our support and guidance for life. Pups will have shots and deworming. Reduced to $850. 604820-4827 Golden Retriever pups, M/F, $700 each. Call (604)997-0024. No Sunday calls.
