Council updated on water, power issues BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston town council got the Columbia Basin royal treatment on May 27 when a travelling roadshow arrived to deliver an annual update on water and power issues that affect local communities. Representatives from BC Hydro, Fortis BC, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service crowded into the gallery to deliver an operational update on anticipated water levels and other topics to council and other local officials. While water levels remain above average, forecasts indicate that the Kootenay River and dams will be high, but floods are not predicted. Weather forecasts being what they are, one presenter noted, anything is possible. Snow packs are also above average in the Kootenays, but in other areas of the Columbia Basin in the U.S., they are low to very low. See COUNCIL, page 3

Announcement

Our 22 years of living in Creston and providing medical services has been a very rewarding experience. Not only have I been able to work in a place full of great people in a beautiful area, I have enjoyed the high standards for medical care with my colleagues and at the Creston Valley Hospital. It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce our planned departure from Creston in August 2014. Our decision is based on personal and family reasons which make leaving Creston for a larger centre our only option. It is important for you to know that Summit Medical Clinic will NOT be closing. Efforts to replace physicians who leave our community are ongoing by our wonderful recruiter, Marilin States, and our Creston Valley Health Working Group. Creston has a good record for attracting and keeping physicians because it is a great place to live and work with a group of highly qualified and dedicated doctors and medical staff. We would like to thank the people of the Creston Valley and area who have been our friends, neighbours and colleagues over the past two decades. We are grateful for your continued support and encouragement as we move on with the next phase of our lives.

WASTE NOT — On the May long weekend, Creston’s waste water treatment plant was officially

opened, with (from left) Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall and Kootenay Columbia member of Parliament David Wilks present for the ribbon cutting. The upgrades totalled $7.2 million, with $4.7 million coming from the federal and provincial governments. The funding was received in 2009, but the original design and tenders were too costly, so a more economical redesign was used.

Horgan

From page 1 “The NDP has to be the party again that it was under Mike Harcourt,” he said during a break in which he wasn’t getting an earful from farmer Randy Meyer about changes enacted last week to the Agricultural Land Reserve. “We have to do some public education on our mainstream values to make sure that people understand that we are not that dissimilar, that the Liberals don’t corner economic issues.” Horgan, MLA for Juan de Fuca, said that his visit to the Kootenays — two days of touring with Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall — brought back a sense of familiarity. A career civil servant, he was a lead negotiator in the Columbia River Treaty and helped to establish the Columbia Basin Trust.

RCMP

From page 4 •Police are investigating a complaint that a driver speeds along 25th Avenue South daily at more than double the posted limit. •A male reported to be sleeping in the post office was gone when police arrived.

“Of course we are strong on the environment,” he said, “but also have to develop our resources using a balanced approach.” Horgan said that government and politics often aren’t as important to the public as they are often portrayed. “There’s a saying that, ‘You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do,’ ” he said, quoting Eleanor Roosevelt. “Mostly, I think people are happy or unhappy with what we do, then they get on with their lives. It’s when your interests are affected that you take an interest in politics.” To rebuild a party that had victory within in its grasp in 2013, only to see it disappear on election day, Horgan said he will focus on areas that have supported the NDP in the past. “We wanted to renew NDP interest in places like the Elk Valley, which has roots in the party.”

In talking to Meyer, Horgan said he hears similar complaints about changes to the ALR wherever he travels — the lack of consultation has led to changes (dividing the province into two zones and including the Creston Valley in the less productive one) that benefit some, but could have devastating effects on agriculture. “When I saw the changes I thought, I could break this farm up into seven or eight lots and be a millionaire pretty quickly,” Meyer said. “But my parents and grandparents didn’t farm so I could do that.” Mungall said an NDP government would undo the ALR changes. And Horgan wants to be the premier responsible for the undoing. “I don’t want to be Leader of the Opposition in three years,” he said. “I’ve learned that campaigns have to be right through to the end. The Liberals do not have a divine right to rule.”

May 31 •A red Dodge Caravan reported to driving erratically on Highway 3 with an elderly male at the wheel was not located. •Police were called to what they determined to be a civil dispute about a vehicle’s ownership on Ninth Avenue South. June 1 •A report of gunshots was made from Scott Street.

•A report of four sports cars travelling at a high rate of speed eastward on Highway 3 was referred to Cranbrook RCMP. •A wallet was reported lost on Cavell Street. •Alcohol was a factor in a landlord-tenant dispute on Erickson Road. They were referred to the Residential Tenancy Branch to find a resolution.

Consulting means listening

In the absence of inspiration during a week that started with the passing of a dear friend, I turn this space over to IntegrityBC, a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to help restore a bond built on trust and confidence between citizens and their elected officials. I could not have said it better: —Lorne Eckersley BY DERMOD TRAVIS Integrity BC On one hand you can’t fault the B.C. government for trying, but on the other hand their enthusiasm for it — consulting British Columbians on public policy and pending legislation that is — seems a little wanting. Gung-ho it’s not. In the last year, there have been government white papers, discussion papers, no papers but input welcome, questionnaires and form consultations on everything from local elections to booze, electoral boundaries to area-based tree farm licences, and trustee laws to government apologies. Some of the consultations even took place before legislation was tabled in the legislature. Last September, the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development released its white paper on local government elections reform. The consultation period closed seven weeks later. Now it’s a pretty safe bet that most B.C. families don’t discuss sponsorship of third party election advertising rules in local elections around the dinner table, but one would have thought that the ministry would receive more than 49 submissions. After all, B.C. does have more than 2,000 local officials, a number that mysteriously grew by 400 or so from the white paper last year to a news release from the minister last month. The government’s consultation on

area-based tree farm licences is doing modestly better with 145 blog comments, 410 mentions on Twitter and 2,507 email submissions. How many of those are individuals posting or emailing more than once? Only the government knows for sure. Public consultation on Bill 24, the Agriculture Land Commission Act, took a decidedly different tact. When Energy Minister Bill Bennett’s mea culpa for failing to consult didn’t cut it, a new minister was called up from the minors, a few hastily arranged closed-door meetings were thrown together, a passing nod to unsolicited feedback was proffered and then closure invoked to pass the bill with a few amendments tossed in so the government could claim that they’d taken public input into account. It’s not as though a how-to manual on government consultations wasn’t readily available. A few years back, then-auditor general John Doyle put together a Coles Notes version for MLAs. In Public Participation — Principles and Best Practices for British Columbia, Doyle wrote, “Getting public participation right is essential, including striking the right balance amongst competing priorities of government, being clear to the public about what can and what cannot be accomplished in the short term.” Doyle listed six key principles to best practices, including authenticity (the decision hasn’t been made), inclusiveness (include stakeholder groups and public affected by the pending decision), transparency (stakeholder groups and public must understand the scope of the pending decision, the process and procedures, and constraints facing the decision-maker) and integrity (decision-maker will address public and stakeholder concerns in an honest and forthright way).

Contrast these principles with comments from Bill Bennett on ministerial colleague Norm Letnick’s belated attempt at consultations on Bill 24, “Am I open to consultation and listening? Absolutely. … But I can tell you that government is not interested in fundamentally changing or delaying the bill. The bill will pass.” There goes authenticity and transparency out the window. Then there was the letter from Linda Reimer, parliamentary secretary to the minister of community, sport and cultural development on the ministry’s 125-plus-page white paper on local elections. Dated nearly a month after the paper was released and less than three weeks before submissions closed, it was sent by snail mail a week before the Thanksgiving Day long weekend informing selected stakeholders of the consultation. So much for inclusiveness. And finally there was the government’s version of now you see it, now you don’t policy recommendations. First, the government committed itself in the white paper to not changing the three-year term of local officials and then in the dead of night did. All because the single biggest special interest group on the issue — the Union of BC Municipalities — changed its mind. Again. The largest single stakeholder on the issue — B.C. voters — had no say. And there went the integrity principle. All of which is why the government should also heed one of Doyle’s warnings from Public Participation: “Getting it wrong simply frustrates all participants — government and the public — and requires time to rebuild the trust required to engage successfully.” Dermod Travis is the executive director of IntegrityBC (www.integritybc.ca).

Farmers’ voices need to count To the Editor: Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle recently got a laugh out of fellow BC Liberal Party members at their convention in Kelowna. “They grow a lot of things in Nelson — food isn’t one of them,” he said. The comment was part of words spoken by director Kettle on the controversial Bill 24, which made changes to our province’s Agricultural Land Reserve — making it easier for most of B.C.’s farmland to be used for non-agricultural purposes. Director Kettle thanked the government “for not getting weak knees” on seeing the thenproposed bill become law. What director Kettle conveniently ignored in his remarks is how much food is grown by his own constituents, in his own area and elsewhere in our fertile valley. I am proud to be growing healthy, nutritious food in Area B. I am among the many local farmers, gardeners and other Creston Valley food producers whose voices do not seem to count to director Kettle or his provincial Liberal colleagues. When I first spoke out against Bill 24 and in favour of public consultation on the future of B.C. food lands, my concern was to defend B.C.’s agricultural legacy. I urged others who believe in protecting our future food security to speak out, too. Now, after months of leaked documents showing backroom dealings and limited concern for due process, after faulty testimony by Liberal MLAs in the legislature and after stunning lack of government response to public outcry on this matter, my concern is just a much for our province’s democracy. I

opiNioN LiNe

urge my neighbours to stand up for due process and transparency on this and other issues. And, as a younger resident of this province, I urge politicians, both local and provincial, to give me reason to believe that my voice counts. I am not laughing, director Kettle. Laura Hannant Creston

Kids’ parade should have competition To the Editor: On May 19, I was able to attend the children’s parade as part of the festivities of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival. My son, who is four, was excited to ride down the road on his bike. I spent the days leading up to it regaling him with memories of mine from Blossom Festivals of my youth. We used to come in from Fernie every Blossom Festival to visit my grandparents. We would spend hours digging through Grandma’s “dress up box” to find the perfect costume, spend countless time using Grandma’s makeup to make our costumes complete. Now, most kids like dressing up, but there was more to it than that. We wanted to win the prize. Yes, the prize! Every year they had a competition for best costume and best float — in the kid’s parade. (Insert audible gasp.) “What? But those poor children that didn’t win prizes. Whatever did they do?” I’ll tell you what we did — because I never did win a ribbon. We didn’t care! It was just fun to dress up and compete. So, I had told my son that he might win a prize for his sheriff costume. Unbeknownst to me, there were no prizes! No competition. Nothing. Granted, I should have done my

research first instead of hyping him up without finding out if there would be a competition, but that’s a different point. My son was excited to try and win a prize! So much so that he allowed me to draw a beard on him (he’s pretty particular these days about his looks). When we found out there were no ribbons to be won, he was pretty crushed. However, my point is that there should be a competition. Two-thirds of the kids at the parade were not in costume. Why would they be? There was no incentive to be dressed up. It saddened me. When I asked the volunteer about it, she said, “Oh, we’ve never had a competition. We just want it to be fun for the kids.” I corrected her. So I come to the question I want to pose: When did competition equal no fun? I can imagine a kid, when not placing in the competition, possibly crying because they had hoped they might win. What does a parent do? These moments are the opportunities to teach our children valuable lessons like, “You can try your hardest and still not be the best. Continue trying,” or, “Enjoy being part of the experience,” or —heaven forbid — “It’s OK to be mediocre!” There were kids, even when I was a child, that didn’t participate. If your child truly can’t handle the competition, they don’t have to participate. They could just dress up for fun or not dress up if that suited them, too. I just get so frustrated that parents — yes, I repeat, parents — have babied their children to the point that committees are afraid to hold a competition for kids in case one or two of those kids’ parents formally complain that their precious baby didn’t win the prize. Boo hoo! That’s life. What lesson are we teaching our children when we take away all form of competition? “Everybody wins when nobody loses”? I’m sorry, to me, “Nobody wins when nobody loses,” and it’s a crying shame. Simone Wiebe Creston

PFDs are key to summer safety

I know it’s a couple weeks ago, but did you get a chance to partake in any Creston Valley Blossom Festival activities? Perhaps you saw the parade where we had a batch of our intrepid lifeguards providing escort to the giant lifejacket known as Buckles. Maybe you even saw in the back of the Regional District of Central Kootenay truck, we had our very own mermaid (not actually ours as no one “owns” a mermaid) lounging in a wading pool to keep her cool and damp. Similar to how China retains ownership of all the giant pandas around the world, which are then selectively loaned to other countries at a fee of about a million dollars a year per pair, we were able to briefly secure a mermaid through intense negotiations and swimming through a few hoops. She is now safely back wherever it is mermaids go: rescuing or abducting sailors. I can’t remember which. It was also a coup to get Buckles, the Red Cross water safety mascot, who regularly travels across Canada promoting — you guessed it — water safety. Driven home by some of the tragic news reports we have heard these past weeks, the importance of wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) can’t be stressed enough. There are differences between a lifejacket

and a PFD, however. A Canadian approved standard lifejacket, when worn properly, is designed to turn an unconscious person from face down to face up in the water, allowing them to

inflated by the wearer using either an oral or manual inflation device. A key point to remember is that you must get the right size specifically for children, and they must be buckled in to it properly, so if they fall into the water, they don’t squirt out of the PFD like a watermelon seed between your fingers. Once you have the proper device, take it for a spin. Head out (or take the kids) into a safe supervised patch of water and try it out to see how it behaves and how they can swim or paddle in it. If you are like me and the lake has to be body temperature before you get in, we have a pool for you! Bring it to the Creston and District Community Complex and let the kids get familiar with how the world changes when you can’t touch bottom and you have to rely on that red, yellow or orange device for support. Like that rented tuxedo, you also have to take care of it by making sure it is rinsed or washed according to manufacturer ’s instructions, dried properly so mushrooms aren’t growing on it and stored properly in the boat where the dog can’t sleep or gnaw on it. They quite possibly could save a life. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

breathe. They are typically a keyhole design, come in two sizes and have to be red, yellow or orange with a whistle attached. A Canadian approved PFD is designed to keep you afloat in the water and are designed for use in recreational boating. They are generally smaller, less bulky and more comfortable than lifejackets. They have less flotation than lifejackets, and have limited turning capacity, but are available in a variety of styles and colours. Sometimes you have to look twice at someone to see that they are even wearing one! There are even inflatable PFDs, which are a type of personal flotation device that either automatically inflates when immersed in water or is

Almost Golden named best production in competition Advance Staff

Footlighters Theatre Society will be presenting the locally written Almost Golden at Theatre BC’s Mainstage provincial competition in July after being named best production at Centre Stage, the May 29-31 adjudicated competition of plays from the Kootenay Zone. Adjudicator Danielle DunnMorris gave the top honour following a festival that included two original Footlighters plays — Almost Golden and Coffee’s On — and Revelstoke Theatre Company’s The Dumb Waiter. “I chose it because I felt that the company in Creston deserved to go to Mainstage,” said DunnMorris, who appreciated the fact that the play was local and original. “You have an amazing energy rising up from the group.” Almost Golden, written by Suzanne Chubb and Jason Smith, and directed by Brian Lawrence, won most of the awards, with Stephanie Sweet named best supporting actress, Kelly Mehrer earning best supporting actor and Marc Archambault receiving a special mention for acting. The cast and crew were named in a combined award for props and costumes, and Smith earned an award for set design. For Coffee’s On, Jordan Koop was named best actor for his one-man show, and his director, Simon Lazarchuk, earned an award of merit for directing. “It was a very sophisticated, different idea which cleverly and creatively came to an amazing and profound ending,” said Dunn-Morris, who added that the play was “beautifully written and beautifully acted.” The Revelstoke team’s production of Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter earned three awards: best director for Anita Hallewas, and best actress split between Sarah Harper and Anna Fin, who starred in the play’s two male roles. “It’s a classic with many possibilities on how the story can be put forward,” said Dunn-Morris. “The company took some risks and entertained us royally; however, the ending needed to be more of an unknown than it was.”

For his role in all three festival productions, Prince Charles Theatre technician Caleb Siggers earned the honour of best lighting design. This marks the first time that Creston has hosted the zone festival since 2003, and the first Footlighters festival entry since the award-winning Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 2002.

“The community was so supportive of all three plays,” said Lawrence, the festival cochair and Footlighters president. “And almost as important, the adjudicator’s critiques of each play gave everyone involved — the audience, as well as cast and crew — a much better understanding of what makes good theatre.”

Citizen scientists wanted for annual Kootenay bat count KOOTENAY COMMUNITY BAT PROJECT

Volunteers counting bats as they emerge from a roost site at sunset.

Juliet Craig

Do you want to become a citizen scientist contributing valuable data towards conservation of bats in B.C.? The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) is seeking volunteers for the annual bat count. This citizenscience initiative encourages residents to count bats at roost sites to provide valuable information on bat populations. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for residents who care about wildlife to be involved in collecting important scientific information” says KCBP co-ordinating biologist Juliet Craig. “You don’t need any special skills and kids can be involved.” The annual bat count is being promoted by the KCBP in partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Environment to collect

baseline data on bat populations before the devastating white nose syndrome enters the province. “White nose syndrome is decimating bat populations in eastern North America,” says Purnima Govindarajulu, with the Ministry of Environment. “We are lucky that this disease is not yet in B.C., but it is predicted to arrive here within ten years. Monitoring bat populations is essential for detecting sudden declines associated with white nose syndrome caused mortality.” Residents wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They can video the emergence or use a hand tally counter to count the bats. They record the final count along with some basic information on weather conditions. Ideally, two counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups

are born, and two more between July 21 and Aug. 15 when pups are flying with their mothers. “We know relatively little about bats in this region, including basic information on population numbers,” says Craig. “This information will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we do our best to match them to a roost site nearby.” Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and with support of the BC Conservation Foundation, the KCBP also provides educational programs and information for landowners dealing with bat issues on their property. To download the annual bat count instructions and data forms, to register for the bat count or to get assistance dealing with bat issues, visit www.kootenaybats.com or call 1-855-9BC-BATS ext. 14.

The United Nations has designated June 15 as

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)

Wear purple on June 15 to support seniors living in dignity. Research has shown that elderly abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation is one of the biggest issues facing senior citizens around the world. World Health Organization data suggests that 4 to 6 per cent of elderly suffer from some form of abuse, a large percentage of which goes unreported. The purpose of WEAAD is to encourage communities to recognize the problem of elderly abuse, and for countries to create policies that foster respect for elders and provide them the tools to continue to be productive citizens.

Hilda Rose Ludwar (nee Kwasnicki)

July 25, 1924 ~ May 16, 2014 Hilda Rose Ludwar (nee Kwasnicki) passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, with her family by her side, on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the age of 89 years. Hilda was born at home in Bayard, Saskatchewan on July 25, 1924. Life was not easy growing up during the Depression on the prairies. Being the oldest in the family was a big responsibility and helping each other was very important to the whole family. Hilda and her siblings attended Stefan (Scout Lake) School. In her late teens Hilda worked on the Áoor at the Providence Hospital while earning her Grade 11 and 12 and began Assistant Lab Technician work. She married Albert Ludwar on July 25, 1944 and they honeymooned in Niagra Falls, ON. They began farming; hard work and family help enabled them to prosper even after losing their Àrst home to Àre. Their Àrst three children were raised in Scout Lake, SK and the other three came along in Maxstone, SK. In 1968 they went from wheat to dairy farming by purchasing property and building a new house in Lister, BC. Hilda was very proud that she did all the painting and staining in the house herself. She worked on the farm until 1978 when she started cooking at the old Clubhouse at the Golf Course. She was pleased to be the Clubhouse Manager when the new building opened in 1982. Hilda enjoyed the people and catered many meals at ‘The Club’. She retired in the fall of 1989. People still say they miss her great cooking - for which she credited to learning from her mother. She moved to town in 1986 continuing to keep busy by taking in family, boarders and hockey billets. Hilda travelled to Jamaica, Florida, Arizona, California, Nevada and many parts of Canada and was thrilled to take two of her grandchildren to Denver, Colorado to see the Pope. She enjoyed gardening, driving, playing bridge, golÀng, Áower arranging, rug hooking, knitting and crocheting. Many of the projects she made are treasured by her family. One of her ultimate joys was becoming a grandmother and greatgrandmother. Hilda said she was getting greater and greater!

In 2007, diminishing eyesight made her decide to relocate to her daughters’ in Yahk, BC. She enjoyed the birds and her Áowers on her deck by the river. A very independent person, she lived in her own home until her illness. For someone so small, Hilda was a very brave, strong and sassy woman. She had a sense of humour to the end and will be loved and missed by her family forever. Notably, Hilda received her 25 and 50 year Service Pins for the CWL, taught Catechism and was an advocate of Pro Life. Predeceased by parents Michael (1971) and Michaelina (1996); brothers Alfred (1946), Larry (2006), Richard (2008) and Arthur (2008) Kwasnicki; sisters Rita Champagne (1983), Olivia Heagy (1996) and Mary Kwasnicki-Harris (2002); husband Albert Ludwar (1984); son-in-law Dexter Fedechko (2013); and grandchildren Braidy Ludwar (1992) and Kael Vance (2005). Survived by siblings Cecile (Glen) Rasmussen: Weyburn, SK, Frieda Russel: Grand Forks, BC, Ludvina Crosby: Edmonton, AB, JoseÀna Dobos: Cranbrook, BC, Carl (Karen) Kwasnicki: Castelgar, BC, Raymond (Elaine) Kwasnicki: Sandspit, BC, Mickey Kwasnicki: Winlaw, BC and Tony Kwasnicki: Nanaimo, BC; children Dwayne (Denise) Ludwar: Lister, BC, Brenda Umscheid (Ron): Rocky Mtn House, AB, Grant (Rhonda) Ludwar: Lister, BC, Penny Fedechko: Yahk, BC, Garth Ludwar (Tiina): Creston, BC and Jocelyn (Andy) Boots: Yahk, BC; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and various nieces, nephews and surviving in-laws. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday May 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Tom .aNNaniyil ofÀciating. After the service, a lovely luncheon was served by the Catholic :omen's /eague A private family interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, BC. Memorial Contributions may be made to BC Cancer Foundation, 601 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1L3.

Guatemala mission creates lasting memories BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Carrying a total of 400 pounds of clothing, books, school supplies and more, four Creston Valley residents visited Guatemala during a February mission trip, bringing joy to those less fortunate and returning home with unforgettable memories. “We went to plant seeds, but they planted seeds in us,” said Ann Range. “You just want to pay it forward.” Three other Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church members — Pastor Stephen Schneider, Madison Lacoursiere and J.J. Trepanier, plus two from Trail and two from Surrey — joined Range on the 10-day trip, in which they funded a new roof for a school, ministered at a dump and a police station, and visited 12 schools, handing out Bibles and a Seeds International workbook that teaches students about God, morals and respect for others. The cash and items they took with them largely came from Creston Valley residents and businesses — including Pharmasave, Shoppers Drug Mart and Creston Valley Dental Centre — with Extra Foods donating about $4,500 of clothing, pencils and shoes. The shoe donation came about after former Glad Tidings pastor Carl Sawler, who was in

Guatemala, sent Range a photo of three children with no shoes. She took it straight to her boss, Extra Foods owner Ryan Leeming. “He said, ‘Go take what you need,’ ” said Range. The roof on the Chiquimula school was expected to cost about $5,000; donations from Creston totalled far more, allowing for the purchase of a sump pump to help with water storage. And in the mountain schools, hats and shoes were particularly well received — some of the families are too poor to educate their children past Grade 5. “There are people less fortunate in the world, and people in town helped make a difference,” said Range. The difference was felt most keenly at the Jalapa dump, where the air is filled with smoke from burning garbage and many families — about 200 people, according to a 2011 estimate — live in whatever they find suitable, sometimes wrestling with dogs and pigs trying to get their hands on recyclables. They, too, enjoyed new clothing and food, with members of the group washing the children before they ate. Throughout the mission, the group was grateful to be escorted by police — signs of unrest are everywhere, with homes having metal doors, and dogs fighting in the street. See MISSION, page 29

Mission

From page 28 “At first it was a bit scary because you know how much crime there is,” said Range. “For birthdays, they wake up at midnight and party into the day,” said Schneider. “One night, we were sure there was gunfire, but it was just firecrackers across the street.” In addition to a 15-minutes sermon, the group also delivered the police a framed photo of the Creston RCMP detachment members. The 10-day mission was a busy one, with very little downtime. But the trip wasn’t about relaxing, it was about helping people — and those people will never be forgotten, nor will their enthusiastic reaction to the Canadian visitors. “They’re all huggy,” said Range. “They’re very, very affectionate people.” “They don’t have our Canadian ‘bubbles’,” added Schneider. In 2008, a 14-year-old Cree activist named Shannen Koostachin had the simple but ambitious dream of getting a “safe, comfy” school built in the needy First Nations community of Attawapiskat, Ont. Reaching out to children across Canada, she ignited a movement that came to be known as Shannen’s Dream. Koostachin spoke out about the experiences of her community in newspapers, at conferences and on the steps of Parliament Hill. At the age of 14, she was nominated in 2009 for the International Children’s Peace Prize.
