On June 6, 1944, the HMCS Skeena formed part of the blockade of the English Channel, safeguarding the western flank of the largest amphibious landing in human history — D-Day. On board was Acting Sub-Lieutenant and ship’s navigator Peter Godwin Chance. He would later go on to command a variety of frigates and destroyers in his naval career, eventually retiring at the rank of Commander and moved to Sidney. On May 21, Chance and 14 other veterans of various actions during the invasion of Normandy, were awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur. It’s France’s highest honour and was presented in a Vancouver ceremony by M. Jean-Christophe Fleury, Consul General of France, on behalf of the President of France. For those looking to learn about camping, the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is offering a special learn to camp program this month. The overnight camp out, which takes place next weekend on June 14 and 15, is a partnership between Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op. The Learn to Camp program is in its second year at McDonald Park and was hosted last year as a day program. This year, organizers will host the event as an overnight experience in hopes of making people more comfortable with the outdoors. “One of the biggest barriers for a lot people when it comes to camping and enjoying the outdoors is fear,” explained Francine Burnett, the promotions officer with Gulf Islands NPR. “With this learn to camp program we hope to reduce that fear whether it be about animals, getting lost, not knowing how to set up a tent or cook on a portable stove. If we can help people with those skills we hope they will get out and use the parks more often.” The event will feature handson workshops like tent set-up and camp stove cooking as well as presentations from search and rescue including a demonstration with a search dog and handler Kim Bialkowski from the local chapter of the Canadian Search and Disaster Dogs Association. “There will also be lots of programming for kids including geochaching, a scavenger hunt and an evening campfire pro-

Vivid memories of D-Day action Continued from page 1

Chance, who wrote a book about his naval experiences, says he has vivid memories of D-Day. Once incident stands out in particular. “The Skeena was at the head of the English Channel, facing west,” he recalls. “We were stationed near the western peninsula of France with other ships to prevent German submarines from getting to the (Normandy) landings.” Suddenly, two torpedoes came at the vessel and thanks to their anti-torpedo equipment towed some distance to the rear of the ship, they were not hit. Chance says he and other officers on board spotted the periscope of what turned out to be U-953 and immediately launched an attack with depth charges. Chance says they figured they damaged the sub, but adds it was one of the few ace German boats to survive the war. “The sub survived our attack but it dropped off a wounded 19-year-old sailor at Brest,

France,” Chance says. “He was later taken as a prisoner of war to Virginia in the United States.” Fifteen years later, chance says, he received a phone call. “The voice had a marked Virginia accent and a man asked me about the HMCS Skeena and told me he had gotten to know that 19-year-old German sailor, Karl Baumann. I got to speak with him.” The sailor was released following the war, returned to Germany and then, with his wife, went back to the U.S. “We talked about how we tried to kill each other that day,” Chance says. “It was a fabulous conversation.” Chance wrote the forward to Gregory Owens’ book, The Longest Patrol, the story of the life of Baumann, who died in 2009. Chance would go on to sail with the Skeena on a variety of other dangerous wartime missions. The HMCS Skeena would eventually find its way to Iceland in October of 1944. Chance says they anchored near Reykjavik in a severe storm. The anchor, he

says, would drag along the bottom and crash the ship into the rocks of a nearby island. He says 15 sailors were killed in the incident and the Skeena was lost, eventually raised by the Icelandic government and broken up. Chance would serve on 13 ships in his career. He retired from the navy in 1970 and served five years as the executive officer to the Dean at Osgoode Hall Law School of York University. At 93, Chance says while he was pleased to receive the Légion d’honneur, the 70th anniversary of D-Day is important so people can remember the sacrifice of so many people to win freedom in Europe. “We lost a lot (of people) on the beaches that day.” Chance says he is one of a very few remaining veterans of the Skeena during D-Day. “The ship’s gone, most everyone is gone. I’m the only one left as far as I know.” As veterans die, Chance says there will be fewer opportunities to share lessons from that time in history.

Four men who died during a training flight out of Sidney’s Pat Bay Aerodrome in 1942 have been found and identified 72 years after they were declared missing. On October 30, 1942, Sergeant William Baird of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force members Pilot Officer Charles George Pox, Pilot Officer Anthony William Lawrence and Sergeant Robert Ernest Luckock, vanished. They had flown out of the aerodrome — what is now the Victoria International Airport — on a navigation training exercise during the Second World War. The wreckage of their aircraft, an Avro Anson MkI, was discovered in October 2013 on southern Vancouver Island by workers for Teal-Jones Cedar Products Ltd., a logging company operating in the area near Port Renfrew. They also found

From May 5 to 9, the Department of National Defence and the B.C. Coroners Office collaborated to remove and identify the remains. The cause of the crash is not known but John Lewis, president of the B.C. Aviation Museum at the airport, says it is mostly likely due to poor weather. “Flying was a lot more dangerous in those days,” Lewis said. “There was no radar, no

GPS and if it got foggy, you were in trouble.” The likely cause, he said, was that the pilot became disoriented and the aircraft struck the hillside at speed. “But we cannot know that for sure. It’s just the likely reason.” The museum is home to a display model of an Avro Anson MkII, an aircraft very similar to the one that crashed in 1942. Lewis said there were 150 people killed during training missions flown

out of the Pat Bay Aerodrome during the war years. The airfield was considered at the time an OTU — Operational Training Unit. Air crew would receive their basic training, he said, and then come to Pat Bay for more advanced instruction before being posted to an operational unit overseas or at home. The Avro Anson was, he continued, typically used for navigation training at that time. The crew of that flight, Lewis said, were recorded as missing and presumed deceased following an unsuccessful search. Their names were listed on the Ottawa Memorial to the missing. “We will never forget the sacrifice of those who came before us,” said Lt.-Gen. Yvan Blondin, Commander of the Royal Air Force in a DND media release. “No matter how much time passes, doing the right thing for our people and their families is an Air Force priority.”

Owners of local compost facility will appeal on June 19 a stop work order issued by the Agricultural Land Commission earlier this year. On Jan. 30 a stop work order was issued to Gordon James Rendle and Robert Roderick Rendle of Foundation Organics Ltd. and Stanhope Dairy Farm by the ALC’s CEO Richard Bullock. The stop work order came on the heels of ongoing issues and complaints regarding the composting facility that have spanned the last handful of years. On March 31, the ALC received word that the stop work order would be appealed by the family and the hearing is now slated for June 19 with a location to be determined.

“We appreciate that the ALC is planning to conduct the hearing in the Victoria area, as this will allow the appellants, interveners and other interested parties to observe the proceedings with less inconvenience,” said Central Saanich Mayor Alastair Bryson, who added that both the CRD and the municipality applied for intervener status in the appeal. In August of 2013, the Capital Regional District suspended the facility’s operating license after hundreds of complaints to the CRD, the ALC and the municipality and numerous warning notices from the CRD regarding foul odours emanating from the facility. In January, the B.C. Supreme Court upheld the CRD’s suspension of Foundation Organics’ operating license and in November of 2013 the ALC released a report on the operation that deemed it was operating outside of allowable farm use and that it was in contravention of the Agricultural Land Commission Act. an there be anything more Canadian than camping? Getting out into the great outdoors and just knowing naturally how to get outside, setting up camp and enjoying the solitude just seems like a long thread in the fabric of our culture. It’s a passtime many people grew up with. Families did it together and often the kids were enrolled in either Boy Scouts or Girl Guides where camping skills were part of the everyday curriculum. The enjoyment of the outdoors — and how you can survive comfortably in it — has been passed down, generation to generation. That’s why it seems a little sad that National Parks staff have to teach people how to do it. It’s a little sad, but not all that surprising. More and more people are filling Canadian cities and to a certain degree, going camping might not have the same appeal as it once had. It’s not necessarily an urban-versus-rural issue — either you enjoy camping, or you don’t. Yet, only taking in nature from afar deprives a person of a closer connection with the outdoors and the opportunity to decompress and disconnect from the world for a short time. There can be nothing more rewarding to be out of cell range and left to your own skills and know-how to survive in the wild — even if that wild is a groomed provincial camp site that you can drive into. It’s that disconnection from the world that can leave a body feeling nervous, vulnerable or simply cut off from their community. That distance can be enough to discourage some from taking the step into the great outdoors. This is, however, not a bad thing. Unless they have the confidence and skill set to enjoy camping and hiking, individuals should not leave the security of their urban world. We don’t need rescue bills and missing campers on our hands. It’s this confidence and skills Gulf Islands National Parks staff are hoping to impart during their Learn to Camp overnight program June 14 and 15. It’s far better to accept that some people don’t have outdoor skills and need those lessons to improve their outlook when they decide the time is right to go camping. And for many Canadians, as soon as the weather turns nice, that time is right now.

Sidney has good stores, but problems In wanting to rebut my questioning of the need for alphabet soup organizations in Sidney, Noel Gagnon (PNR letters, May 16) comes across as so desperate as to suggest people spend money and time regardless of effectiveness. As for alternatives, I gave an example of wasted advertising money – a common problem. Earlier I suggested two very large audiences that could easily be reached and commented that businesses could just do it of their own volition out of their own pockets. In my submission to the Peninsula News Review I described some good stores but noted problems with book stores. The broader point is that businesses fail or succeed on their own merits, both results are occurring in Sidney. My big concern is the collectivist mentality that coerces individuals by forcing them to pay for alphabet organizations while blocking building of housing that local employers urge which would increase population thus potential business. several years ago, once again the tourist season is upon us and yet the best we can do in Sidney to welcome guests is an uninformative temporary sign propped up against a temporary storage unit at the Anacortes ferry landing. We now have no information office at the south end of town and a defunct tourist information station on Highway 17 north of town. We have no effective informative sign inviting B.C. Ferries’ traffic into Sidney as they move south. Where is the efficient and effective leadership from Sidney council on heading up the placing of effective signage in a timely and strategic manner? Have we become bogged down in process and sacrificed any sense of timeliness? What a wasted set of opportunities. Canora traffic woes I have a concern about the lack of a pedestrian crossing on Canora Road between Weiler Avenue and Northbrook Drive. Traffic is particularly problematical between Mary’s Restaurant and Northbrook Drive. Traffic comes and goes from

Transit priorities Several times recently, while waiting at the 5th and Beacon bus stop for the No. 81 community bus, I have seen it sail by without stopping. It was full of tourists from Swartz Bay going to Butchart Gardens. It is totally unacceptable that tourists can monopolize public transport to the exclusion of Peninsula residents. Writers feted in new contest Poets and short story authors gather at the Sidney North Saanich Library The Winners

People who filled a room at the Sidney North Saanich hung on the words of authors as the first Saanich Peninsula Community Writing Contest came to a conclusion. More than 120 entries were received by members of the Sidney North Saanich Library Writers’ Group, which sponsored the contest. On May 29, winners in the three categories — poetry, fiction and nonfiction — read excerpts from their entries. Don Chambers, winner of the poetry category, described in his work, The Canadian, a train trip across the country. A strong speaker, Chambers brought listeners on board and with him, they rode the rails. Author George Mercer won the fiction category for his tale, Kid Gloves. How far would you travel for a home cooked meal? Munich, Germany – There’s no shortage of places to chow down here in Bavaria but that’s not really what I had in mind. Local runner to host fundraiser at SODC Devon MacKenzie News staff

A local athlete is raising funds to help her make it to the top of the world podium. Casey Atkin, a nationally ranked track athlete from the Saanich Peninsula and a Stelly’s Secondary School grad, trains with Pacific Athletics and is headed to several events in Canada and the U.S. this year. She most recently returned from a series of races in California and is headed to the Senior Nationals in

Moncton, New Brunswick June 27 to 29. In July she will compete in the Victoria Track Classic and the Provincial Championships in Kamloops, and in August she heads to the U23 North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships (NACAC) also in Kamloops. Atkin, who estimates the costs of her training, travel and competition expenses at around $10,000 a year, is hosting an evening at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre (SODC) on June 21 to help her fund her passion. “Fundraising is essential to my future success,” Atkin explained. “In 2012 my community helped me to go

to Europe for competitions and now I am asking for support to help me reach my goals to keep running for B.C. and to run for Canada in the 2014/15 seasons,” she said. Atkin plans on focusing her energy and talents on qualifying and hopefully achieving a podium position at the World Championships in 2015. She trains eight times a week and competes in the 400 and 800m events. Every spring she travels to California with her team for warm weather training and experience in international competitions. “I’m very committed to my training,” Atkin said, adding that she works from 4:30 a.m.

Green, freshly cut grass, healthy plants or flowers and generally tidy grounds go a long way when it comes to selling your home. Says Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres, typically not one to trot out clichés, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The state of a home’s outside property is literally the first thing people notice when they arrive for a showing or a drive-by viewing. “You can probably get a pass on your landscaping in the winter, but once spring and summer come, everybody notices. It’s a big deal to have a nice-looking property,” Ayres says. In terms of bang for the buck, spending $200 to $300 on bark mulch and potted plants can be one of the best investments a home seller can make to spruce up their lot, he adds. Niki Ottosen, owner of Gardener for Hire and a certified horticulturist, often gets phone calls from homeowners or real estate agents looking for help tidying up homes before they’re put on the market. “They want a quick cleanup and they want ideas on how to make it look good before they take pictures,” she says. For simple freshen-ups, she advises clients to redefine the edges

But with a few little trade secrets it can make your work easier.” Some homeowners don’t know how to get started so they don’t want to get started, she says. “We do know the short cuts and know how to do it really fast. And after, people are very thankful for the help.” That fact – not to mention Greater Victoria’s mild climate – has helped the local residential and commercial gardening and landscaping industry blossom in recent years. Ayres, an admitted “non-gardener,” has a go-to landscaper he works with on a regular basis for situations where the homeowner may not wish to tackle the job, or on vacated properties for sale that need to be maintained. While a neat and tidy lot is a must, there’s a fine line between having a nice garden and one that looks like way too much work, he says. “Having too elaborate a garden might turn some people off. But you might also get someone who sees it as a real plus.” Ottosen agrees. “When they’re looking to buy a home, people look for what they have to do. If the gardening part of it is already done, it’s a weight off of them,” she says.
