Canfor workers benefit from funding AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter With a funding promise of $150,000 for training opportunities, Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said it’s just the beginning. The funding was provided by the province under B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint to provide job skills training and retraining opportunities for workers affected by the closure of the Canfor sawmill. “Training programs at the College of New Caledonia will help those affected by the mill closure hone their current skills, build on their experience and develop new skills,” Oakes said on behalf of Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk. “We are working across ministries and with community partners to support workers and their families as they make the transition to new jobs and opportunities.” The training offered will be determined by CNC working in partnership with the Quesnel Community Adjustment Team and affected workers and may include programs for heavy equipment operator, occupational first aid, forklift operator, fire suppression and construction safety training. The courses will be delivered at the CNC Quesnel campus and complement other programs offered at that campus. “We are dealing with transition and providing the supports while they go through that process,” Oakes said. Post Secondary Education Council chair Mary Glassford spoke to the funding and the opportunities the college provides. “Anything we can do to further education and training in this community is what it’s
all about,” she said. “Our Community Adjustment Team and WorkBC staff were on the ground in Quesnel immediately to help coordinate employment information sessions and offer support for career counselling and re-training,” Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour Shirley Bond said. “This funding is one more way to make sure workers get back on their feet. The training through the college means they will be ready to take advantage of new employment opportunities.” The provincial government has committed to continue to work closely with the City of Quesnel and the full spectrum of local and regional organizations to provide support for mill workers, truck drivers, contractors, suppliers, families and the broader community affected by the sawmill closure. These services include career counselling, job matching, skills upgrading, business start-up support and financial advice. “We’re going through a transition and we’re not through yet,” Mayor Mary Sjostrom said. “But we’re resilient and we’ll make it happen.” “We take great pride in being a community college and therefore are very grateful for this funding as it will allow us to help members of the community transition through this difficult time,” CNC president Henry Reiser added. “This funding will help create new opportunities at College of New Caledonia for the people of Quesnel.” Projections show a million job openings in British Columbia by 2022 with about 43 per cent requiring skills and trades training.

hey sit surrounding him on the carpet, looking up. He had a thin face, brown eyes and a crew cut. Rumour had it he was a real ladies man. He was hockey to them, he was their NHL, they would know him as GreyEyes. “We would listen to every word he spoke,” he says, a soft smile of memory-past fleeting across his face. “He was our superstar.” Bob Marsh leans forward and grins, reminiscing of the Roos’ 1964 hockey legend, Herb GreyEyes, sitting in his parents living room, across from the TV, in an easy chair, regaling the six boys and their parents of The Game. “He had a huge slap-shot from the wing,” Marsh said, noting the hero’s penchant for cutting his blade and curving it. This is one of thousands of memories Marsh has of The Old Barn. From plywood separating blue lines so three teams of eager five-year-olds could embark on the Canadian dream, to the exhilaration the 1970 midget tourney in Manitoba, to all six brothers: Jim, Tom, Jerry, Jack, Bob and Mike, playing together in the 2011 GoldPanners Tourney. It was their, “first and only time.” “We grew up in this rink,” Marsh said. “This was such an important part of growing up.” Hence why Marsh takes an active role in the promotion of a new arena, noting it’s importance in the heart of his community. “This is about future generations,” he said. “What town doesn’t have a proper rink? It’s unheard of.” It is to memories of parents claiming spots in stands, to camaraderie, honour, defeat and loss he hopes Gold Pan and CRD residents will turn to when they vote to replace the space in which some of his best memories were born: The Old Barn.
What you need to know for voting Residents within the North Cariboo Recreation and Parks service boundary head to the polls to vote on a proposed North Cariboo Arena Replacement project that would see a 1,600 seat arena with a regulation size ice surface and dry floor space to support arena programs and events. Residents will be asked the following question at the advance polls and general voting day: “Are you in favour of the Cariboo Regional District adopting Loan Authorization Bylaw 4905 to borrow up to $7.5 million over 20 years to provide for the construction of a new arena as part of the North Cariboo Recreation and Parks Service?” General voting day is Saturday, June 14, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at the following locations: • Red Bluff School, 1533 Maple Drive, • Parkland Community Hall, 5016 Bjornson Road, • Bouchie Lake Elementary School, 2074 Blackwater Road, • Barlow Creek Elementary School, 816 Barkerville Hwy, • West Fraser Fire Hall, 243 Jackpine Flats Road, Quesnel • Quesnel Legion Branch #94, 262 Kinchant Street, When heading to the polls, you must bring at least two pieces of ID. All eligible North Cariboo residents are strongly encouraged to participate in this important referendum.

West Fraser, NDI and province reconfirm funding The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee is pleased to announce that the province, Northern Development Initiative Trust and West Fraser have re‐confirmed their commitment to the North Cariboo Arena Replacement Project totaling $7 million. The province confirmed that it will extend their community recreation program grant for the project completion in the amount of $4 million. This confirmation was received in a letter to the Joint Planning Committee from the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes on March 25, 2014. “I am proud to support the North Cariboo Arena Project and this $4 million grant extension by our government re‐affirms our commitment to help the project become a reality as the community hub right in the heart of Quesnel,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said. “In addition, by moving forward with the project

new jobs for skilled‐workers and labourers will be created during and post construction helping grow our economy.” The $2 million grant received from Northern Development Initiative Trust in 2011 for the North Cariboo Multi‐Centre project is secured. At a recent meeting of their board, the Trust agreed that the funding approval for that project, which lapsed after the referendum last fall, be extended subject to confirmation of other funding sources and the project starting construction by June, 2015. As such, the $2 million will remain available for the renamed project, the North
Cariboo Arena Replacement project, subject to the terms stated above. “Northern Development is proud to continue to support the North Cariboo Arena Replacement project with a $2 million grant extension,” Northern Development Initiative Trust Chair Evan Saugstad said. “The Arena project will provide a boost to the economy in Quesnel and create an asset that will make the North Cariboo a more attractive place to live.” West Fraser has committed up to $1 million. To encourage community participation, $500,000 of that funding is earmarked to match community contributions to the Arena Replacement Project. “Our business started as a humble planing mill here almost 60 years ago,” Ray Ferris, Vice‐President of Wood Products at West Fraser said. “On behalf of all of our employees and their families that have made Quesnel their home,
we are delighted to contribute to our community’s spirit and improve these needed recreation facilities. We are pleased to support a healthy, vibrant, and sustainable Quesnel through the Arena Project.” “We would like to thank our funding partners for their continued support of our North Cariboo communities,” CRD Vice‐ Chair Ted Armstrong said. “Your generosity and financial support of this project is a testament of dedication to the north Cariboo and its residents.” “We are extremely grateful for our partnership with the Province, Northern Development Initiative Trust and West Fraser and that they have all agreed to keep their dollars in Quesnel in support of a much needed project, the Arena Replacement Project,” Mayor Mary Sjostrom said. “These funds are critical to the project and we thank them for their strong commitment and continued support.”

Clarifying arena queries
I
would like to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions that have been asked at our recent Open House regarding the proposed arena project. What was the process to hire the architects for the concept designs on the Arena Replacement Project? The architects hired for the Arena Replacement Project were selected using a process and timeline that was approved by the Joint Planning Committee at an open public meeting. A request for proposals for design consulting services for the project was posted on BC Bid and closed on April 23. Nine architectural firms submitted proposals. A design selection team made up of City and CRD staff evaluated the proposals using the scoring criteria in the RFP document. Interviews were scheduled with the three highest scoring firms. General Manager of Community Services for the City of Quesnel Jeff Norburn and Northern Director Jim Glassford participated in the interview process. The quality of all three firms was impressive. They all had a lot of experience designing arenas however CEI Architecture stood out as the best choice. No one involved in the selection process had

MAYOR’S MESSAGE prior experience working with CEI Architecture however, their references and qualifications were excellent. CEI Architecture was awarded the contract to do the PreReferendum design work on April 30 and they started work on the project right away. How much money has been secured to date for the project? Approximately $9.9 million as follows: Province of British Columbia, $4 million Northern Development Initiative Trust, $2 million Allocation from capital reserves, $2.2 million Donations and pledges including West Fraser Mills, $1.7 million Why can’t we renovate the existing arena? Spending money to renovate a building that has long outlived its usefulness is not a good use of taxpayer dollars.
REUSE
Renovation of a building makes sense when some portion of it is worth keeping but this is not the case with our 60 year old building. Recent references in the media to the renovation of the Pitt Meadows arena are not a good comparison. The Pitt Meadows facility was only 20 years old, compared to our 60 year old building. It is worth noting that the Pitt Meadows renovation started with a $5 million budget that quickly doubled to $10 million when unexpected problems were discovered during construction. Renovations can only address some of the problems in a building but they can’t address them all and they have a much higher risk than new construction to go over budget. The current arena site is too small to allow for a new larger arena and demolishing the rink and rebuilding on the same site would result in the loss of an arena for approximately 18 months, which would affect all of the programs and events held in that facility. If you have a question for Mayor Mary Sjostrom, please e-mail it to us at newsroom@ quesnelobserver.com and we’ll forward it to the Mayor so she can answer it in an upcoming column.

Editor: Why you should vote yes in the upcoming referendum on a new ice rink? Having lived in Quesnel for almost 40 years, I have had the luxury of attending more Kangaroo, Millionaire, Minor Hockey, Figure Skating and FHL events than even a Savardian Sprinarama could encircle. Back in the 1960-70’s, my parents had Kangaroo season tickets and I recall watching Herb Greyeyes, Pete Joyal and Jack Marsh dominate the Cariboo Hockey League. In the mid 70’s, the Millionaires owned the town and if you didn’t attend the Saturday night game when Lyle Inglis, Jerry Melnyk and Barry Gagnon blitzed the Peace Cariboo League you had no friends at school on Monday morning. For the past 20 years, I have played and reported on the Forestry Hockey league every Wednesday with the likes of Curtis “The Flash” Fenton, Mike “The Mechanic” Enemark and Chad “The Comet” Swanson. I can tell you first hand that the “Old Rink”, “Barn on Barlow”, “The Vault” did a heroic job in hosting fabulous events the last 60 years, but it’s way past it’s prime. In fact, I believe it’s game seven and our backs are against the wall. It’s not about the 50, 60 and 70-year-olds that we need to vote yes for, it’s about our kids and their kids that we need to make the right choice and vote yes. The Montreal Canadiens have a line from the famous John McCrae poem in their locker room. To you from failing hands we throw, The torch; be yours to hold it high. he instant gratification of the digital age has detrimentally affected everyone’s ability to see the bigger picture, both as it relates to the past and the future. Two current issues paint a picture of this myopic attitude. Christy Clark is not the first premier to talk about how the process for the way government and teachers bargain is broken. Somehow, because she has said it recently in this round of contentious bargaining, it becomes a new thing, like some kind of revelation. It is not. The characters change in the premier’s office and at the top of the teachers’ union, but the same script is spoken every few years. The facts are, enrolment is down in many jurisdictions. When the formula used to fund the system is based on per pupil numbers, the pot is smaller. It’s not rocket science. The teachers also say, every time their contract comes up, they are fighting for the children and the level of their education. If they were only asking for smaller class sizes and a return of supports and enhancements like aides and librarians, that would be more believable. The BCTF says the average salary of a teacher in B.C. is $71,485. While the BCTF is coy about its wage-increase demands, some reports indicate the BCTF is asking for 16 per cent over four years, 21.5 per cent if you work in the increased costs to benefits and reduced workload. You can read the same phraseology, the same comments from both the government and the teachers, in any labour dispute between the parties for the past four decades. As Yogi Berra said, it’s deja vu all over gain. It’s not a new issue. All of the parties involved should stop treating it as such, admit culpability and move to make real, systemic changes so we’re not talking about the same things in another 20 years. – Black Press
Don’t take anything for granted W
hen we think of people learning to walk, we usually envision toddlers and the delightful excitement surrounding their first wobbly steps. My high school friend David Parke has been the focus of such a joyful display twice in his life initially at about the same young age most of us were, and then again in his 40s after a terrifying accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. On the morning of June 13, 2010, the father of two young daughters was biking alone on Mount Fromme in North Vancouver, where he’d cycled the beautiful trails countless times over the decades. That was the morning that changed his life forever after he hit a slippery section, lost control and fell 10 ft. to the ground. Finding himself face down in the dirt, he tried to push up with his arms, dust himself off and carry on, but he was completely unable to move. Feeling freaked out, but trying to remain calm, he yelled and screamed for help over the next hour and a half, realizing he would never get out alive without someone’s assistance.

On A Brighter Note Fortunately he was finally heard by a man and rushed to the hospital. David could talk and move his feet slightly, but other than that, he was paralyzed and would have to press a button with his tongue whenever he needed to contact the nurses. With some sensory and motor function below the injury, he was diagnosed an incomplete quadriplegic. He had fractured his neck at C7 and hyper-extended his spinal chord at C3 and there was no way of knowing if he’d ever walk again. But as frightened as he was to live in the state he was currently in, David was grateful for life and determined to do whatever he possibly could to get back on his feet. Initially dependent on his partner Sherri and the nursing staff to feed, bathe, dress and do everything for him, he started getting new sensations and abilities
The non-profit organization provides services for people with spinal cord injuries, helping to find housing and jobs, offering peer support and providing many other resources, for which David feels deep gratitude. Accompanied by his brother, the 2,600 km trip across B.C. is intended to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries and also give something back to SCIBC. Many people might see David’s lengthy rehabilitation as a time consuming struggle, but he considers himself a very lucky man. “Through this experience I’ve learned not to take things for granted,” he said. “To appreciate every moment of every day and care about the people around you because they care about you. Love life as much as you can because it’s very short and very fast and there’s no time to waste.” For more information about David’s fundraising ride and to see his video please visit PinkBike. com/news/Ride-for-Spinevideo-2014.html or his Ride For Spine 2 page on Facebook. that allowed him enough mobility to control an electric wheelchair. Daily physio and occupational therapy gradually led to him using a manual wheelchair, then standing on his own, and eventually taking his first wobbly steps. “It was so tedious, arduous and super annoying,” he said of his many months in rehabilitation. “But at the same time, it was hugely fulfilling because it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I had to make sure my head didn’t go into a dark place, keep myself positive and try to be as happy and upbeat as possible, knowing I would be able to walk again.” Turns out, he would ride again as well. Four years after his accident the film technician and Langara College student still doesn’t have full use of his hands or feet, but he’s not letting that stop him from embarking on a new courageous journey. Vote for the future Editor: The Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce encourages North Cariboo residents to vote “Yes” in the upcoming North Cariboo Arena Replacement Referendum. The referendum, held on June 14, will determine whether or not the Cariboo Regional District will be able to borrow up to $7.5 million over 20 years to provide for the construction of a new arena in Quesnel. The Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business, dedicated to a prosperous community. The Chamber recognizes that the arena replacement project will bring numerous economic benefits to the region. The proposed arena features a NHL-sized rink and would seat 1,600 spectators. This new facility would provide a venue for hosting a variety of sports tournaments and events that would not otherwise be held in our community. Sports tournaments and events have a great economic impact on our local businesses and economy. The arena hosts hockey games, figure skating regional events, summer trade shows and much more. With the increased size and seating capacity of the new arena Quesnel has the potential to hold more prestigious events, such as provincial tournaments and concerts, which require large and modern venues. Quesnel for multi-day tournaments and other events require accommodation, food and entertainment. An increase in tourism means that more money will be brought into our community, benefiting both business owners and employees. Quality infrastructure is an integral component of any thriving community. A new arena would provide a superior venue for people of all ages to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, it would be a place where residents could come together to celebrate the values we share as a community: teamwork, perseverance and community spirit. With our changing economy, it is crucial that we focus on providing modern facilities that will attract families. Replacing the aging arena would demonstrate that our city is committed to growth and development, encouraging more people to call Quesnel home while working anywhere. The Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce strongly supports the arena replacement project and urges residents of the North Cariboo to vote “Yes” in the upcoming referendum. Not only will a new arena positively impact our local economy by increasing tourism and attracting families, but it will also provide a venue that our community can take pride in for generations to come. Melanie J. Watts book is a good guide for northern gardeners. Annie Gallant photo
Growing Food in a Short Season Learn tips and techniques for successful northern gardening
Those fortunate enough to live in northern climes celebrate the warm summers blessed with some of the longest days anywhere on earth – albeit for only a short season. This combination of a short temperate season and long hours of daylight presents a unique challenge for northern gardeners with hopes of harvesting before the autumn frosts arrive. Melanie J. Watts, long-time resident of the B.C. Peace region and a Master Gardener, explains in her book, Growing Food in a Short Season, that with the right gardening practices the short northern summer can lead to an explosion of life, producing enough colour and food to see anyone through the dark days of winter. Providing helpful hints and wise gardening philosophy for productive food garden, Watts begins at ground level with instruction on how to use compost and ma-
nure to create fertile soil that will lend its life to plants. A variety of seed options and planting methods are presented – including start times and placement – taking into account microclimates that occur in each garden as well as the benefits of companion planting. Additionally, plants that are easily grown in zones two and are listed with concise how-to-grow information. Watts provides full chapters on garden maintenance and harvesting, as well as tips on cooking and preserving your bounty with great recipes that focus on eating seasonally. A garden journey from the ground to the plant, Growing Food in a Short Season emphasizes success through working with nature and using sustainable, organic practices. Watts provides a valuable resource – even for those garden-

Conversation about Finances is Important for Newlyweds June is a popular month for weddings. If you’re getting married this month, you no doubt have many exciting details to discuss with your spouse-to-be. But after you get back from the honeymoon, you’ll want to have another discussion — about your finances. It might not sound glamorous, but couples who quickly “get on the same page” regarding their financial situation are actually taking a step that can help them immensely as they build their lives together. As you start talking about your finances, be sure to cover these areas: Separate or joint checking/savings accounts

Meet the challenge to help secure SPCA Ray Hoekendyk from Excel RV Service loves animals and he has great respect for the job being done by the SPCA in Quesnel. When he heard about yet another break-in in which all the bottles and cans were stolen that were to go towards donations, he decided to step up to the plate and do something to help the organization that helps those unable to act for themselves. Ray is donating $300 towards a surveillance system for the Quesnel SPCA Branch. This latest break-in is the second in recent months. Earlier, thieves broke in and stole money from the office used to provide care, food and anything else the animals require while
in their wonderful care. With no government funding, the SPCA relies on these donations to help the animals that are in need of love and veterinarian care while they are found new forever homes. Excel RV Service is challenging all Quesnel businesses to donate to the Quesnel SPCA whether it is money or other items needed and they are always happy to receive cans and bottles they can turn into money. Most everyone is a pet owner and should be doing what they can to support these hard working, compassionate people that work tirelessly to help animals in need. So please do what you can to contribute to your local SPCA.

Debts Both you and your spouse may be bringing in debts, such as student loans or credit cards, to the marriage. You don’t necessarily have to do everything possible to get rid of these debts immediately, but you should set up reasonable payment plans that will allow you to lower your overall debt load so you can free up money to invest for the future. Spending and Saving Newlyweds are often surprised to discover how different they are from each other in the area of spending versus saving. You don’t have to try to radically change each other, but you both need to be aware that your spending and saving decisions now have greater consequences than when you were both single. To illustrate: If one of you is more of a spender and is used to running up big credit card bills, these actions can clearly affect both of you. To avoid problems of this type, you will need to communicate clearly with each other Goals

This translates to an average tax increase of only $20.93 per year. • Approximately $9,900,000.00 is available for the project so far. • An award-winning design firm has been contracted to do the design. • With the federal election in spring of 2015, we are hoping for federal funding to make this project even more affordable. • Let’s build this arena for our children and

Some couples create joint checking and savings accounts, others keep everything separate and still others find a middle ground — joint accounts along with smaller, separate accounts. There’s really no one “right” way for everyone, but whichever method you choose, make sure you’re both aware of where your money is, how it can be accessed, and by whom.
grandchildren • Believe in our community. Believe in our people.
It’s important for married couples to clearly establish their financial goals. Do you want to purchase a house? If so, when? If you’re going to have children, will you want to help them pay for college? When do each of you want to retire? And what sort of retirement lifestyle do you have in mind? By answering these and other key questions, you’ll be formulating a set of goals. And from there, you can devise a strategy for attaining these goals. Investment Styles Both you and your spouse will unquestionably need to invest if you are going to achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, each of you may have a different investment style — for example, one of you might be an aggressive investor, willing to take more risk for the possibility of greater returns, while the other is more conservative, ready to accept lower returns in exchange for greater preservation of principal. To pursue your strategy for reaching your objectives, each of you may have to compromise somewhat on your “investment personality.” To achieve this balance, you may need to consult with a financial advisor. Finances are an important part of any marriage. By communicating regularly and working together, you and your spouse can build a solid financial foundation for your lives together.

If you carry a Shrek-sized load, look to the good Shepherd
ave you heard the story of Shrek the sheep? Shrek became a national icon in New Zealand after eluding shearing for six years by hiding in caves. When he was finally caught, Shrek looked a bit ridiculous, boasting a fleece weighing in at 60 pounds – that’s enough wool to make 20 large men’s suits! The average

famous 60 pound fleece was shaved on national television and auctioned off for charity. How often do we wander away from our Shepherd or attempt to hide from Him amid the busyness of our lives and find that we are carrying a heavier-than-necessary load? Psalm 23 reminds us that The Lord is [our] Shepherd, and it is He
who cares for us, tends us, shears us even. He removes the unnecessary burdens of fear and doubt that can overwhelm us, just as Shrek’s 60 pound fleece would have been a burden to him. In Psalm 81:6a God says I removed the burden from their shoulders and He can do the same for us also, if we let Him! Are you running from
your Shepherd today? Do you think that you know what is best for your life and are finding things not working out? Are you afraid of acknowledging your need for a Shepherd? Are you a sheep who was once close to the Shepherd but has gone astray, caught up in the distractions of this world? Perhaps you are carrying a burden in your life that
the Good Shepherd can easily shear off if you simply allow Him to work in your life. Seek out the Good Shepherd, and your burdens of fear and doubt will be replaced with peace and hope – a much lighter load to carry! Laura Van Schaick is a lieutenant with the Salvation Army Quesnel Corps.

Wildfire first home game of the season
WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter The Wildfire faced-off against Prince George and Williams Lake for the Quesnel lacrosse players first home game of the season. It has been a season of travel for the young athletes, with the bantam and midget teams travelling to MacKenzie, P.G. and Williams Lake for games but it was now time to face competitors at home. The bantams first home game was against P.G. 1, May 31 at 9 a.m. and facing-off again later that day against P.G. 2 at 6 p.m. The Quesnel bantams are

proving to be a tough team to beat, having won all their games in the season so far and last weekend’s games were no different. This group of skilled athletes faced their opponent and came out victorious, remaining undefeated. The midgets also had their first home game over the weekend, June 1. The first match of the day was against P.G. 1 at 10 a.m. The Wildfire players started the game off strong, scoring the first goal of the night for Quesnel was Tomas Reistad. The team worked together to score two more goals before
the end of the period and try as the might P.G. could not keep up. The first period ended with a score of 3-0 in favour of the Quesnel Wildfire. The arena was filled with the sound of exited fans and lacrosse sticks clashing when the second period started. The visiting team netted their first goal of the night but this victory seemed small as the period came to a close, with Quesnel firmly in the lead. The score was 6-1 in favour of Wildfire at the start of the third period. It seemed that P.G. was picking up a bit of steam,
Celebrate Dads & Grads
scoring another two goals during this final period but it was not enough to catch up to the Wildfire. In the last 30 seconds of the game coach Pat Gibbs called a timeout, confidently taking out his goalie for the last shot of the game. The Wildfire's had the ball and took aim, hoping to net a final goal before the final whistle. The shot was a little off and the ball rolled to the floor as the third period ended missing its mark. Though even without that final goal the Quesnel Wildfire's need the game victorious with a
final score of 8-3. The Wildfire played later that day against Williams Lake, ringing in another win with a final score of 15-3. As with the bantams, it has been a great season so far for the Quesnel lacrosse midget team. The young athletes seem determined to make this a memorable season, having won four of there five games. The Wildfire bantams face-off against Mackenzie and Vanderhoof June 14 in Mackenzie and the midgets are matched against P.G. 1, P.G. 2 and Fort St. John in Prince Geroge June 7 – 8.

Marlana is meeting new people Candidate Marlana Alec learned about the Miss Quesnel program through a friend and it seemed like a good opportunity for the 15-year-old. She was drawn to the program with the hopes of meeting new people and improving her public speaking ability and so far she has not been let down. She enjoys going to events such as the Bowl for Kids Sake and bonding with all the people involved. Her sponsor is the Nazko Economic Development Corporation. Although she is uncertain what her talent will be at the moment she has been encouraged to do something related to her involvement in hockey, such as showing the correct way to put on hockey equipment. Join all the candidates for speech and talent night July 3 and witness the crowning of 2014’s Miss Quesnel July 5 in Chuck Mobley Theatre.
Observer Classifieds Have It! How to play: Puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Suduko, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues provided in the boxes.

Kady hopes to speak out
For 16-year-old Kady Clement, joining the Miss Quesnel program had been something she’d wanted to do for many year and saw this as the perfect opportunity to upgrade her social skills. It was the speech nights and workshops that this young candidate enjoyed the most. In many ways the program has helped to improve her public speaking abilities and she hopes to put these skills to good use after high school by reciting poems and speaking out against drinking and driving. She enjoys writing and will be reciting an original poem for her talent. Digging Thunder Contracting, is her sponsor for the program. She is grateful to get the chance to represent a community that her relatives from across Canada found to be a wonderful inviting town. Join all the candidates for speech and talent night July 3 and witness the crowning of 2014’s Miss Quesnel July 5 in Chuck Mobley Theatre.
