Nixon steps forward to let name stand as MLA candidate By Treena Mielke

The ink was barely dried on the Wildrose Party’s announcement that nominations were officially open, when an unlikely candidate stepped forward to let his name stand in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding. Constituency president Jason Nixon has taken a leave of absence so he can can let his name stand as a candidate for MLA and challenge incumbent Joe Anglin. Nixon, a 34-year-old accountant and president of Athabasca University Student Union has thrown his hat into the political ring because he believes the constituents have the right to have a choice as to whom they want for an MLA. “The feedback I have heard is that people want an MLA who is active, visible and focused on relevant issues. They want an MLA who can work with all levels of government to solve issues that matter.” Active in the party since 2009 and president of the constituency since the fall of last year, Nixon stands behind the Party’s policies and beliefs and wants the opportunity to serve as MLA to ensure these core values are practiced. Broere puts support behind Nixon as Wildrose MLA candidate By Treena Mielke Pieter Broere’s decision to run as MLA for the Wildrose Party for the RimbeyRocky Mountain House-Sundre riding got shut down abruptly when he received notification from the Party he was disqualified. Broere, who has been a Party member

for four months, was told he needed to be a member for six months in order to let his name stand as a candidate. The Party’s ruling has put Broere out of the running, but he is pleased to put his support behind Jason Nixon. “He is very capable and he is legal to run within the Party. When I talked to Jason

I realized we were on the same page. I ask all my supporters to back him.” Broere said he was overwhelmed by the support he received during his short-lived, but enthusiastic campaign. “The support I received was beyond my expectations, but I don’t really think it was me. The people of Rimbey want to see

change.” He said he is grateful for all the support he has received and will continue to stand behind the Party and back Nixon, whom he sees as being a positive choice as an MLA. “An MLA needs to listen to and encourage the people in his constituency,” he said.

Pieter Broere who has been disqualified from running as an MLA candidate for Wildrose for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre Constituency sits with Jason Nixon, who has taken a leave of absence from his position as president of the Constituency to let his name stand as an MLA candidate. Treena Mielke photo

Nixon to run as MLA candidate Continued from Page 1 The MLA candidate lives with his wife Tiffany and children, 17-yearold Markus and twins, seven-yearold Chyanne and Austin, about a half an hour from Sundre at Bearberry. As a rural resident, he is undaunted by the huge riding of Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre. “I’m a rural guy at heart and I’m quite prepared to travel. Every community in the riding would be of equal importance to me.” Nixon moved to the Sundre area several years ago from Calgary where he was employed by Mustard Seed, a street ministry for the homeless. After leaving Calgary, he was employed as the executive director of

Mountain Aire Lodge, an extension of the Mustard Seed, that housed former street people and recovering addicts, helping them to change their lives. Nixon has a post secondary diploma in business administration from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is looking forward to meeting all the constituents within the riding and chatting about relevant issues and concerns. The Wildrose Party has announced nominations are now open in 19 constituencies including Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre across Alberta.

Plans are now being formulated for new Rimbey lodge By Treena Mielke The funding is in place to begin work on a new lodge, but plans for the facility are still in the infancy state. Chairman of Rimoka Housing Foundation Paul McLauchlin said a meeting will be held on June 18 at which time the board will come up with a resident consultation plan. “It’s very important that we keep residents in the loop and let them know what’s going on,” he said. At this point, the primary issue is

that $13.3 million has been allocated to go towards a care facility. However, plans as to how the money will be spent are still up in the air. “Nothing is written in stone. The need has been identified, but there is a lot of flexibility as to how the dollars will be spent,” said McLauchlin. “Everything is a process,” he added. The board chairman said conversations with residents of Parkland Manor have indicated some people are happy to stay where they are. Comntinued on Page 7

The colour of spring Mother Nature has finally done it! She has come along and coloured all the white pages of winter, drawing from her own amazing selection of crayons to bring us a delightful potpourri of greens and blues and purples and, in fact, evTreena Mielke ery colour and hue of On The Other Side the rainbow. And, even better, she has refused to stay in the lines, instead just spilling colour everywhere. It’s a good thing, what has happened to our world. And it make me, even as I head out the door, late, spilling coffee on a freshly laundered white blouse, climbing into a car that has obviously missed the car wash too many times, almost deliriously happy. The sights and sounds and smell of summer are intoxicating are they not? (even without a sip or two of the bubbly stuff) Of course, the shoulder season, that time after winter and before spring which seemed to go on forever this year, is not so pleasant. It’s that time when you look at the calendar, sigh, and mutter something clever and funny about the fact that spring is conspicuous, but only by its absence. It was during this in-between season that my daughters and I all looked out our kitchen windows at our yards with something akin to horror. There before our eyes lay a dismal scene; patches of dead things like grass and leaves and left over stalks of flowers lay all forlorn and rejected. Our yards cried of neglect and winterkill. We sigh, turn away and pick up the phone. “When is he coming?” we ask each other. He is a family friend. He has a greenhouse. He lives in Saskatchewan, the land of the living skies. And he brings us ‘stuff’ every year. We don’t know the names of the stuff, we only know a few weeks after he leaves we all end up with flowers in our gardens whose beautiful blossoms rival the color of Mother Nature’s crayons.

He is our mobile gardener and without him it seems our green thumbs are broken and useless. When he comes and digs and plants, things grow like they are supposed to. When he leaves, our green thumbs are miraculously healed and we manage to water, weed and, as our gardens grow, puff out our chests and take all the credit. Don’t get me wrong. When he arrives, we try to be helpful. We go out there with him, trailing behind, usually, but not always, carrying a little shovel. We assume an intelligent look and do our best to converse. “Would you like some of that primula like your mom has,” he asked my youngest daughter. “Is that a disease?” she asked politely. I heard the conversation from inside the house

and would have rolled on the floor in laughter, except I had baby Jacob in my arms, and it probably wasn’t a good idea to roll at that time. He explained it was a perennial that produces brilliant early clusters of flowers and grows best in partially sunny conditions. “I would love some,” she said agreeably. Our gardens are planted now. Neat rows of little plants that are, even as I write this, burying their little roots deep into the freshly rototilled soil. I walk out the front door, glance at my weedless garden and offer a smile up to the sun. I love primula or whatever that stuff is called. It is the color of spring!

For example “it’s time for a change”, “it’s

time for some new blood”, or “change out the old guard”. There is nothing wrong with such expression as long as it is accompanied by reason. For example,”we must change out the old guard because they are derelict in responsibility”. To merely make the arbitrary statement we must change out the old guard is ludicrous. The obvious conclusion to this line of thinking is that to make such statements without rumination or reason is pure conjecture and in a practical sense simply declares political euthanasia to be viable even if inspired by a whim. Change is inevitable but it must be driven and inspired by natural and/or justifiable cause in order to produce social benefit. I am certain that the people of this province have the intellectual acumen and moral inclination to continue to make wise political decisions electorally, legislatively and judicially without throwing any babies out with the bathwater or practicing euthanasia (which, I now see, cleverly includes the entire scope and scale of human life).

Once the body is completely relaxed, the person undergoing hypnosis is taken down visual stairs. “Each set of stairs puts you ten times deeper (into hypnosis) than the last,” she said. As much as hypnosis can have a positive effect on a person, it will not work if the person does not want to be hypnotized, she said. “You have to want it to happen. Farmers’ Day June 13th, 2014

Seniors Continued from Page 5 Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin said seniors continue to play an important role in today’s society and noted how that generation likes to mingle with today’s youth creating a win/win situation. Rimbey, Rocky Mountain House, Sundre MLA Joe Anglin gave seniors credit for being diverse individuals who have lived through the depression and world wars and survived. “You are the people who built this province,” he said. Rimbey FCSS, The Drop In Centre, Ponoka County and Rimoka Housing sponsored the volunteer fair.

The Rimbey Review, June 10, 2014 9

Break-in involves theft of highly valued hockey memorabilia Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 40 files this week. Highlights include a break and enter to a residence, theft, mischief, drugs, fraud and other serious matters. Break-in A local homeowner, who resides north of Bluffton, had his house broken into while he was away over the last few weeks. Police were notified by a concerned citizen that there was a suspicious yellow side-by-side utility vehicle hidden in the trees on his farm which was visible from an oil lease road on his property. Further investigation revealed the $18,000 off-highway vehicle had actually been stolen from an acreage north of Bluffton near Township Road 444. When police notified the owner of the vehicle it was realized that his home had also been broken into. Rimbey detachment members and a RCMP Forensic Crime Scene specialist attended the residence and began to gather evidence pertaining to the case. The thieves had completely emptied out the entire residence, stealing everything from kitchen ware to highly valued authentic framed NHL signed jerseys from noted players, such as Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Pavel Bure and many others. A priceless Royal Bank Cup hockey ring was also stolen. Police continue to diligently follow up on all leads and examine evidence as the investigation continues. Vehicle stolen On May 30, an unknown culprit stole a 2001 Dodge 2500, white in colour, from a farm located just north of Bentley. The truck had a large red diesel slip tank and farm supplies in the bed when

it was stolen. Witnesses saw a male driving the truck through Bentley that evening around 8 p.m., but it was not reported to police till the next day. Police continue to search for the vehicle. Shoplifter caught A local business captured a local thief on video surveillance stealing high priced merchandise from their store. Officers located the 29year female, a resident of Sunnyside at Gull Lake and she was charged accordingly. Our local merchants strive to offer the best service at the very best price in our community. Shoplifters cost them greatly. In the end, it costs everyone more to cover the losses the retailers endure. There is no excuse for stealing. If you commit a theft, you will be charged. Scam Mounties are investigating a case where a local family sold their travel trailer to a couple from Edmonton whom they did not know personal-

ly. Rather than collect the full price, they accepted a down payment and offered them the opportunity to take the trailer and pay the rest at a later date. Well, we all know how that ended up. Police are now involved because the new owners have now registered the trailer using a possibly fraudulent bill of sale. Please, take the time to understand the sale of property and binding contracts before you sell anything. Only accept certified checks, money orders, bank drafts or cash. If you extend the buyer credit, be aware that the civil process to collect your money if the person fails to make payments is not an easy task. Please, protect yourself and be diligent in any financial agreement. Sadly, the days when a hand shake and a man’s word meant something are becoming more and more rare. RCMP says thanks

The detachment received many flowers and other kind gestures from so many people in light of the horrific incident in Moncton, NB. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers during this difficult week.

The grade 4/5 class at Rimbey Christian School has been visited by Constable Shadforth. What is is about? It’s about D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education. We have been learning about it for the past ten weeks. We have been taught lots of information and how to use it in our lives. I learned a lot of important information in D.A.R.E. In one week I learned about bullying. Bullying is when someone is being called names or shoved around. The safest way to report bullying is the five W’s. Who? Who is being bullied? What? What is happening? When? When was it? Where? Where was the bullying? Why? Why are they being bullied? I also learned about communication. There are two types of communication; nonverbal communication and verbal communication. Nonverbal communication is body language. Body language is the way your body looks when you listen or talk. Some examples are eye contact, squaring up, keeping space, and not sulking. Verbal communication is not suttering, not demanding, answering questions and more. Also, in another week I learned about the affects of tobacco. I learned that there are more than 200 dangerous chemicals in a cigarette including marijuana and nicotine. Tobacco can cause hard breathing and upper respiratory disease and more people die from second hand smoke than direct smoking. I also learned about ways to respond. These are the best ways to respond: avoid the situation, strength in numbers, walking away, say no and give an excuse and change the subject. Another week I learned about stress. These are some signs of stress: frustration, sweaty palms, and red face. I also learned through D.A.R.E. about pressure. Pressure is when people push you to do something like drugs, smoking, drinking and so on. I learned a lot in D.A.R.E. One way I used the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model (DDMM) was when I was supposed to clean my room. I defined my problem as when to clean my room. I assessed these choices: do it then, do it later, do half now and half later. I responded by doing it then. I made a good choice because then it was over and done with. That was one of the multiple times I used the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model. I am going to use the information I learned in D.A.R.E. for the future. One thing I can do is tell others about the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model. I also can use information I learned to refuse cigarettes, drugs, etc. Also, I can use the DDMM to make wise and safe decisions. I can also help people who are stressed and tell them signs of stress. I am going to use the facts I learned in D.A.R.E. throughout my life. I think D.A.R.E. was fun except for the writing parts I especially enjoyed the word search. I think the most important lesson is about pressure. Thank you for coming Constable Shadforth!

AUPE speaks out about Michener Centre RED DEER – Almost 100 vulnerable Albertans living at Red Deer’s Michener Centre had their weekend on-site nursing services taken away from them by the PC government recently. On-site pharmacy services were removed from residents on May 1. Recreation supports are being dissolved and The Quarter Store, a secondhand store operated by Michener residents and staff, was taken away from them May 30. “These moves are a push to make life as uncomfortable as possible for those remaining at Michener Centre. It’s an effort to speed up the eviction and that’s not right,“ said AUPE Executive Secretary-Treasurer Jason Heistad. “The PC government promised these folks and their families they could stay at their long-time Michener homes as long as they wished in 2008. The Redford government broke that promise last year. “The PC leadership candidates want to show Albertans the PC party has learned its lessons from the failed leadership and policies of Alison Redford. Closing Michener Centre is a prime example of that failed leadership and policy. “They need to prove to Albertans they will do things different. A solid commitment to keep Michener Centre open by the candidates may do just that,” said Heistad. A judicial review of the decision to close Michener Centre has been granted and will be heard at Court of Queen’s Bench in Edmonton on Nov. 27 and 28. In the meantime, AUPE has secured legal services for residents and family members to help them apply for a legal injunction if they’re being pushed to move against their wishes. Over the past year, community support to keep Michener Centre open has been tremendous. In November 2013, Red Deer North PC MLA, Mary Anne Jablonski, who represents Michener residents, tabled 15,744 Keep Michener Open petition signatures in the Alberta legislature.

I’ve heard that raising a teenager is like trying to nail Jello to a tree. This quote suggests that trying to educate a teen is most difficult because nothing seems to stick. Frustrating as that must be they just keep hammering on the nail. “As much as they want to teach us, they also want us to learn to make our own choices and become more independent. Therefore, they try to move away from giving us lessons and instead strive to guide us. Despite how we sometimes act,

A graduation is a true cause for celebration and this year’s West Country Outreach School’s graduation was certainly no exception. The graduation and awards ceremony held Fri., May 30 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre was a gala affair and the gymnasium was filled with graduates, teachers and guests who enjoyed a delightful evening including a delicious meal followed by speeches, awards and finally, the recognition of the graduates. Graduate Shae Bast gave the toast to the teachers. “A teacher is more than an educator,” she said. “A teacher can play all roles; the roles of a friend, counselor or mentor. A teacher can be the guiding force in our lives even after we pass through the portals of our school and step into the world that lies ahead to be conquered. 403-843-2217 Office Shirley Hough “In these years of our youth and adoCell: REAL ESTATE lescence, when the (A Division of Eskdale Holdings Ltd.) 403-783-1961 Multiple Listing Service friends we make are 96 acres with a very nice 1600 sq. ft. 2009 modular likely to be the friends with handicapped access and a great huge deck we keep, it is our might just be what you want. Beatty House is a venue for many cultural functions Continued from page 15 The charming little piece of history, nestled in the heart of downtown was originally owned by Jack Beatty, a successful hardware owner in Rimbey. It was built in 1925 by local carpenter Joe Jones. When Jack passed away in 1956, his wife Violet continued to live in the house for several years. Jones incorporated locally milled lumber and other natural building materials as well as innovatively using plaster for improved insulation. The interior of the house has hardwood floors, exposed decorative wood ceiling beams, a living room fireplace built from petrified wood
