Teachers vote tonight on escalating to full-scale strike By Karl yu ThE NEwS BULLETiN

Nanaimo teachers are currently voting on whether to step up strike action in their labour dispute with the province, with results expected tonight (Tuesday). While there are more negotiations this week, the B.C. Labour Relations Board ruled last week that a provincially proposed 10-per cent wage cut can proceed, something that didn’t sit well with the B.C. Teachers’ Fed-

eration and its locals. According to Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association president Mike Ball, teachers will vote on whether to escalate action up to and including full withdrawal of services. While a provincewide strike is an option, teachers could opt for expansion of current one-day rotating strikes. The Nanaimo school district’s next strike is Wednesday (June 11). Ball thinks teachers will vote in favour of a full walkout, and if there

is such a mandate, a decision will be made by union executives rather quickly on which direction to go. “The executive committee will meet later [tonight] and decide how they’re going to proceed,” Ball said. “You’ll probably know [Wednesday] because if they escalate, they would have to give 72 hours’ notice to the employer, which would be the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday to the following Monday should there be an escalation.” See ‘DISTRICT’ /5

Nanaimo job hunters could start to see more help wanted signs. That’s the view of Woody Hayes, spokesman for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C., who is optimistic Nanaimo is on the cusp of a positive employment trend thanks to construction activity and foreign investment. A recently released report from Statistics Canada shows Nanaimo’s unemployment rate is sitting at a three-month average of 4.2 per cent as of May, which is down from 5.7 per cent over the same period last year and lower than the provincial average. While employment outside the region has accounted for some gains, labour market experts are also giving credit to the Harbour City, which has seen its own influx of jobs because of new companies, construction activity and exports. In the first five months of this year, construction values for single-family homes reached $52 million or double the planned investment compared to this time last year. The city has also seen new employers, including Cabela’s, an outdoor retail store that plans to hire 150 employees from the area. Experts like Hayes anticipate more employment in the coming year. “I think 2014 is looking much stronger [than last year],” Hayes said. “You are actually seeing reports coming out now that you are seeing an uplift in the number of building permits.”

Missing man’s body found

The body of a missing Nanaimo man has been found in surrey. Police confirmed the body was that of Roy Ostling, 62, who had been missing since May 29. Coroner Barbara Mclintock said Ostling’s body was found in the Crescent Beach area of surrey on wednesday. Ostling, who was known for his photography and as a freelance writer, was last seen by his roommate when he left his home and uncharacteristically disappeared without telling friends or family where he was going or for how long. Family members had travelled to Nanaimo from as far away as Ottawa to help with efforts to locate him. Foul play is not suspected in his death. Mclintock said in an e-mail she had little information to offer because the coroner’s investigation is in its early stages, but findings will be made public when a report on the completed investigation becomes available.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue had a busy few days as firefighters responded to a series of blazes in the city. At 6:05 on Thursday, crews attended a fire on Milford Crescent which they quickly extinguished. Capt. Ennis Mond, fire prevention officer, said that fire, which appeared to have started in a planter, did minor damage to the exterior of a home. While still on scene at Milford Crescent, fire crews were dispatched to an attic fire in a home at 106 Pine St. The cause of the blaze, which damaged the top floor of the 100-year-old home, is still under investigation. Mond said three people living in the house escaped unharmed and are insured, but the fire was difficult to put out and the house is uninhabitable

until repairs are made. Fire broke out in a decommissioned chip silo at Harmac, shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. “It appears that earlier in the day they had a fire in a hog pile and wind probably picked up embers and tossed them up onto the roof of this old building,” Mond said. A fire suppression sprinkler system in the silo helped knock down the fire, but it still took several hours for a crew with an aerial ladder truck to fully extinguish the blaze. Shortly after 6 a.m. Friday another call came in for fire that started in a rubbish pile and extended to the exterior of a home on the 3900 block of MacIsaac Drive. Fire damage was limited to the home’s exterior. One man was displaced from his home at 910 Crace St. after a fire broke out Sunday shortly after 3 p.m. The fire appears to have originated near a rear-entry door to the home’s basement and spread into an exterior wall. and worked its way up to the main floor where it caused extensive damage to the kitchen before burning into the attic. Mond said the resident was away at work when the fire occurred and was not injured, but

Residential construction is on the rebound in the Harbour City. Nanaimo is experiencing an upswing in building permits and construction values, with more than double the planned investment for single-family homes than in the first five months of 2013. The increased activity has city officials scrambling to catch up on permit applications and warning of longer wait times. It was a different story last year, when a slowdown in the residential construction market heralded one of the worst building permit slumps in more than a decade. Twelve months ago, construction value in Nanaimo was down 26 per cent, leading to thousands less in revenue for city coffers. This year, Tom Weinreich, the city’s manager of building inspections, said he believes the munic-

Across the board for commercial and residential construction, the city has seen $97 million in permit values and anticipates to soon add another $30 million for the downtown hotel, exceeding last year’s 12-month total of $120 million. Experts including those at the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation say the shift began in 2013 when sales started to increase in the resale market. By last fall, Nanaimo became one of the few communities in central Vancouver Island to move into balanced territory with stable home prices. Low mortgage rates, economic growth in B.C. and new

Wait times have grown from three weeks to five, prompting his department to offer employees temporary overtime to address the issue. “I know it’s not going to get any easier … because we do have more subdivisions coming online as well, but we are basically trying to keep up with the demand and of course, trying to do so in a responsible manner,” he said. CMHC forecasts Nanaimo will see 500 housing starts in 2014.

Doctor awarded for palliative work

In a palliative care unit in Nepal, Nanaimo physician Dr. Robin Love came across a vomiting patient who couldn’t afford medication to stop the nausea. The cost was three cents. “I thought … that guy is going to vomit until he dies because his family doesn’t have three cents,” said Love. “I was just haunted by that story ... and just felt we had to do something.” Love established a partnership between the Nanaimo Community Hospice and the palliative care unit at Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital in Nepal to not only teach and mentor medical staff, but also to pay for patients’ pain medication and nurse salaries. The program is just one reason why

Love has been awarded by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. The doctor received one of four Awards of Excellence in Medical Practice on May 28, which aim to recognize physicians who have shown dedication and service to their communities. They are nominated by their peers. Indecent exposure reported at Westwood Lake Nanaimo RCMP are investigating an indecent exposure incident at Westwood Lake Park. At about 4 p.m. Wednesday a man exposed himself to a female jogger near the first beach. The jogger called police who swarmed the area and brought in a police dog search team, but

were unable to track down the suspect, described as Caucasian, sunburned and six feet tall with shaggy brown hair. The suspect was wearing a white T-shirt, lightcolour pants and work boots. Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.

District tries to limit impact on exams, grad From /1

Like other rotating strike days, the Nanaimo school district is asking parents to keep children home tomorrow. Donna Reimer, district spokeswoman, said contingency plans are being made in the event graduation ceremonies and exams are affected. “It’s really our goal for those ceremonies to go ahead and we’re feeling that we have made plans that will allow them to go ahead,” Reimer said. “Mainly we’ve scheduled them off school sites ... if teachers aren’t available to

assist, we will deploy other staff.” Graduation ceremonies will take place at the Port Theatre with principals, vice-principals and district staff assisting if necessary. As for final exams, Reimer said it will depend on how the teachers’ vote goes. Teachers and students aren’t the only ones being affected as education support workers are honouring picket lines and losing wages. “Anytime you take a day’s pay away from some of these people, because there are

Award recognizes volunteer search efforts

nowing where not to look for something can help give you your best chance of finding it. Jim Spencer, 64, of Nanaimo knows what it takes to determine where not to look. He’s spent years searching for lost and missing people and aircraft as the air deputy for central Vancouver Island with the Provincial Emergency Program’s Civil Air Search and Rescue Association. The civilian volunteer organization, paid for by the Department of National Defence, assists the Royal Canadian Air Force with search and rescue operations. The central Island unit is based at Nanaimo Airport. Spencer was presented with B.C.’s Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Award for outstanding achievements by Suzanne Anton, attorney general and minister of justice, at a ceremony at the B.C. legislature May 26. The air deputy acts as search coordinator and overall manager for search groups and team leader on actual search operations. “We’re defining search areas, how we’re going to search, we’re assigning crews to search the area. We’re liaising with the military because we work with the military and are the civilian extension of the

military,” Spencer said. Spencer, a certified navigator, also flies aboard the unit’s Cessna search aircraft. Since he started as a spotter in 2005, Spencer has taken

part in numerous searches, some of which covered large sections of the province. Several years ago when a pilot and his aircraft went missing en route from Revelstoke

to Qualicum Beach, Spencer’s crew covered the area between Hope and Merritt. “For a couple days there were about 18 aircraft on that search,” Spencer said. “You can imagine the size of the area from Revelstoke to Qualicum and all the possibilities.” Spencer said, to his knowledge, that aircraft was never found, but even successful searches don’t have happy endings when crashes prove fatal. Searches can last days aboard cramped aircraft and require perseverance and patience. “The thing about searching is, whether you’re the lucky person who happens to find the target, or you’re one of the crews that determines the target is not in a particular area, they’re both equally valuable,” Spencer said. “I haven’t spotted a target myself. The idea is to be there as part of the larger picture.” More recently Spencer has used his leadership position to help organize the creation of a new search headquarters at Nanaimo Airport, which increased the headquarters’ capacity, unit training and storage facilities. For Spencer, news of his award is an opportunity to attract more volunteers in the central Island unit which currently has 25 volunteers, but is always looking for more people. Education key at kennel club annual show By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The Nanaimo Kennel Club Dog Show is set for Beban Park this week. According to Sandi Malcolm, a kennel club director and event organizer, the show is the biggest on Vancouver Island and events will run from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, Thursday (June 12) through Sunday. She said that there are about the same number of entries as last year, with about 1,300 dogs over the four days of the show. Conformation rings and competition will take place outside the Centennial Building while grooming will take place inside. Obedience and rally obedience will be held on the lawn bowling green across from the building. “We’re doing a new event this year which is called benching and at the major dog shows around the world, you’ll find that when they bench a dog, they put a dog on a table and to the people that are there, you talk about the dog’s good points, bad points, what kind of families they suit, they don’t suit, all that sort of thing, health issues, testing,” said Malcolm, adding it’s about education. The Canadian Kennel Club will also be present and will passout information to children and adults related to how to find a dog. Benching will take place all four days of the show at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., with each featuring a different breed of dog. There is no admission and the public is welcome to walk around and look at all the dogs and while it might be noisy with all the barking, Malcolm also said it’s fun and the dogs are all contained. “We really, really encourage the public to come out because it is a family event and it’s free,” Malcolm said. “You can spend all day here and never see the same thing twice.” For information on the show, please contact Malcolm at mimicker@shaw.ca or go to the kennel club’s website, www. nanaimokennelclub.ca. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Party hearty, but be safe

Let’s not kid ourselves: teenagers don’t always follow the rules. And when it comes to adhering to the legal drinking age, most of them aren’t patiently waiting for their 19th birthday before having their first sip of alcohol. Graduation season is a time that should be joyous and celebratory, but every year Grade 12 students end up hurt, or worse, because partying got out of hand in one way or another. Nobody in our community wants to see that sort of thing happen. Graduation marks a time of major change. With 13 years of K-12 education behind them, youths are transitioning into the next phase of life: adulthood. Teachers, school counsellors and parents have repeatedly talked about choices (Should I work or go to school after I graduate? What do I want to get a degree in?) that will have a lifelong impact. The same logic applies to grad night. If students choose to celebrate this rite of passage with alcohol, we hope they will do so responsibly. Saanich police school liaison officer Sgt. Nick Ross says he provides the exact same message to his students as he does to his own kids. “Be careful and go out with a plan. What are you going to do and how are you going to be safe?” he asks. That includes celebrating in a safe manner, in a safe location with trusted friends. Most importantly, that’s ensuring a safe ride home – whether it’s arranging a designated driver or waking up parents at 3 a.m. asking to get picked up. An important part of adulthood is making decisions. Youths have already made enough good decisions to earn a diploma; it’s time to make another one now, a responsible one, before heading out for after-grad festivities. It’s all about getting home safe from a night of well-earned fun. If our grads don’t get home safe, it defeats the whole purpose of celebrating.

A proportional system often creates minority governments, and while normally we abhor these because it means a cycle of elections every two years or fewer, if it became the norm, perhaps officials would be more inclined to collaborate rather than confront. Accident leads to art

CONNIE WATTS refuses to let brain injury slow her. BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

he year was 1991 and Connie Watts was working hard to establish herself as an interior designer when a horrific car accident on Vancouver Island changed everything. “[It] stripped me of my ability to see visually,” Watts told the News Bulletin. “I was an interior designer and I lost everything.” The accident left Watts with multiple skull fractures and caused her to lose about an inch in height. “I had no historical memory. I couldn’t write. I couldn’t see things in my head like I used to,” Watts said. “I designed a 10,000 square-foot space and I could see the whole thing in my head, but I couldn’t do any of that anymore.” After spending time on herself, Watts decided to attend the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver in 1994, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Intermedia. It was during her time at Emily Carr that she began to develop a love for creating art. “Being at Emily Carr you’re surrounded by all these artists ... it gave me a venue for building my visual senses back again,” Watts said. “Art was my way back again.” Since graduation Watts has gone to become a highly respected artist, who has carved her way into art galleries all over North America. “It was a fight to get my brain back,” Watts said. “When I went into fine art it was a determination to have my mind working the way I wanted it to. I knew I

was missing something.” On Friday (June 13), Watts’ latest exhibit, Reconciling Self, will be on display at the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Vancouver Island University location. The exhibit features six of Watts’s newest paintings as well as variety of sculptures and other mixedmedia artwork. “It’s multidimensional. It’s layered. It’s got more information,” Watts explained about her work. “You first look at it and you see something and then you continue looking at it and you get engulfed in it. It would be like taking a hike through our West Coast. You’re always seeing more and more and more.”

Watts, who is of Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Kwakwaka’wakw, and Gitxsan ancestry, wants people to walk away from the exhibit feeling connected. “I am from the northwest coast; I wanted them to feel that connection. I say that loosely because our belief system is that we are all one. We are all universal. That is essence what I hope my work captures,” Watts said. “I am hoping that the viewers are beyond that and can actually feel what the work is saying ... I am trying to open myself so people can see this belief that we may look like individuals but we are actually all interconnected and not only interconnected with each other but with everything that surrounds us.”

Watts’ first artistic adventures began when she started creating sculptures of all different sizes. “When I started making things I also had no rules. I didn’t know I couldn’t do something because I had no process to tell me that I couldn’t,” Watts said. Watts’s first ever privately commissioned piece was her sculpture of a large thunderbird known as Hetux, which is on display at Vancouver International Airport. The University of Manitoba graduate is currently working on a new sculpture, which will be installed at Port Alberni later this month. “I’ve got a big sculpture going in for a commemorative project for those that survived and went through the residential schools,” Watts said. In addition to her artistic work, Watts still continues to work as an interior designer. She was also the project manager for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games venues’ aboriginal art program and has served as a member of the B.C. Arts Council. Although Watts refused to allow a serious car accident to slow her life down, she has yet to fully recover from her injuries and currently struggles with the concept of time. “It’s always been my hope that I could have my brain back,” she said. “You know how they say that you’re brain doesn’t heal? Well, I don’t know what happened to mine because I am able to access a lot of things, but time is the one thing that hasn’t come back.” Reconciling Self runs at the campus art gallery from June 13 until Sept. 6. When the Nanaimo resident reached her 20s she became interested in piano. “I really started teaching myself that [piano] in my 20s,” Schram said. Window Day was recorded at Blue Frog Studios in White Rock and was produced by Schram and Pat Glover. Schram said that she typically doesn’t write music from her own perspective. “I very rarely write about myself,” Schram said. “I am not an introspective writer. Sad love songs, I don’t go there. I just write whatever comes to my head. Residents of the Harbour City will have the opportunity to celebrate their differences an upcoming festival dedicated to cultural diversity. Nanaimo’s annual Multicultural Festival is set to take place next Saturday (June 14) in the Old City Quarter. The festival will feature live entertainment, a kids zone, an international food fair and approximately 40 vendors. Festival organizer Kim Smythe said that the festival has grown since it began five years ago. “We try to add a few improvements every year,” Smythe said. “We’ve expanded the festival considerably since we started to produce it. First of all we added a second stage, we added a food fair that is ethnically oriented.” The festival will have two stages of live entertainment, which includes performances from the Chinese lion dance and parade, drums and pipers of the Pacific Gael and the Genya Bomfield Mediterranean Dancers. “We’ve been very focused on the entertainment that we provide and that it does reflect the international cultures that come to live in Nanaimo and Canada,” said Smythe. The Multicultural Festival has become more “thematically focused” since it began five years ago, he said. “We have really tried to maintain that purity,” Smythe said. “That has really paid off. Creative Technology’s new home at École Océane Digital Literacy has become an important component to education. Employers are increasingly expecting new hires to have the skills required to work with 21st Century communication tools like video and the web. As schools struggle to keep up with these changes, many families have decided to look beyond the school classroom for opportunities to learn these skills. Byte Camp has been leading the way in providing these opportunities for kids to learn tech skills locally since 2003. Based on Vancouver Island, this ambitious non-profit has grown to be the busiest provider of Creative Tech classes Kids in Western Canada, with over 2500 students a year taking camps in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and here in Nanaimo. Byte Camp has this year teamed up with École Océane to provide a new home base for its popular Creative Technology Summer Camps in Nanaimo. “We are excited to have the

butter to the crumbs, mix and press into the bottom of a spring-form pan. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes, or until the crust browns a bit. Soften ice cream by letting it sit out of the freezer for a few minutes. Use a spatula or spoon to spread the chocolate ice cream over the cooled graham cracker crust. Spread desired amount of fudge topping over the chocolate ice cream. Then spread the softened vanilla ice cream over the fudge layer. Coat a microwave-safe bowl with a thin layer of shortening. Add most of the marshmallows, reserving a few for garnish, and the water to the bowl. Microwave for about a minute to a minute and a half until the marshmallows are melted. Top the vanilla ice cream with the melted marshmallows. Place the cake in the freezer overnight to harden. When ready to serve, place the garnish marshmallows on top and drizzle with a little melted hot fudge. You can use a kitchen torch or a barbecue lighter to add a little browning to the garnish marshmallows to make them look like they were toasted over a fire. Slice and enjoy quickly before it melts. This cake also makes a great alternative to a store-bought ice cream birthday cake.

The Timbermen dropped the ball and that was one of the reasons why they lost. Nanaimo’s Western Lacrosse Association club made a few too many turnovers in a 10-8 loss to the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena. The home team had a shaky start, falling behind 3-0, and although they tied it up 4-4 in the second and 6-6 in the third, they couldn’t tie it up again late. “We don’t want to take moral victories, but we played better and came back and made it a game,” said Paul Brebber, T-men forward. The Timbermen know they had chances to take control. More offence during the low-scoring first and second periods might have changed the complexion of the game, and there were a few occasions late when Nanaimo was one shot away from tying the score. “It was just small, costly possession mistakes…” said Kaleb Toth, the team’s coach. “Lacrosse is all about ball possession. We need

to control the ball more; we need to not panic when guys pressure us; we need to be able to catch passes and throw passes.” Brebber said players seemed to let nerves get to them.

“A lot of us are gripping the stick a little bit too tight and I think we’re just trying to do a little bit too much and we’re trying to force stuff that’s not there, necessarily,” Brebber said. He led the team with

two goals and other scorers were Bobby Debrone, Macgregor Johnston, Braden Kmita, Jamie Sorensen, Cayle Ratcliff and Doug Langlois. Zak Boychuk tended goal as the T-men outshot the Burrards 45-39.

Juniors win one, then lose badly

The junior A T-men had mixed results on their arenas tour on the weekend. T h e c i t y ’s B . C . Junior A Lacrosse League team played home games Saturday in Duncan and Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, defeating the Langley Thunder 11-8 and then losing to the New Westminster Salmonbellies 22-2. The juniors host the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday (June 11) at 7:30 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena.

Jackie Little played like a hall of famer and won the Mid Island Amateur women’s golf tournament. Little, a member of the B.C. Golf Hall of Fame, shot even par to comfortably win the two-day tourney at the Nanaimo Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. “I’ve been struggling and I’ve been working hard on my game this last week and so it was nice to be rewarded,” said Little, who is from Port Alberni. Nanaimo’s Shirin Anjarwalla, just 14 years old, placed second at eight over par, Alberni’s Christina Proteau was nine over and Nanaimo’s Kim Evans was 11 over. Little set herself up for success with a first-round 71. She said the very first hole Saturday she started with

a couple of well-positioned shots and then made her up and down for par. “That sort of settles your nerves a little bit and then you move on,” she said. Little has participated in the tournament before, and said the “awesome” course is always a draw. “The shape it’s in is phenomenal. It really is a pleasure to play,” she said. “It is a very difficult course so I’m ecstatic about how I played this week.” Langley’s Debbie Bremner won the low net competition with an adjusted four-under par, Victoria’s Paula Green was second at two under and Nanaimo’s Sandra Miles placed third at one under. As the Timbermen try for better results, Toth said better practices will be important. If guys pay attention in learning the system, he said, they’ll be more comfortable come game time. “Guys need to have confidence in themselves and their abilities in order to make the right plays and the right decisions,” said the coach. He suggested that lineup changes are in the works. “I’m going to be giving a lot of guys opportunities to play here,” Toth said. “If they play good and play the way that I want them to play and play smart, they’re going to stay in the lineup. I don’t care if they’re a 10-year vet or a one-year guy.” GAME ON … The T-men again have just one game next weekend, a Father’s Day tilt Sunday (June 15) at Frank Crane Arena against the Langley Thunder. The Nanaimo Pirates had the sort of weekend they hope will inspire them to bigger and better things. The city’s B.C. Premier Baseball League club won two of four games at Serauxmen Stadium, losing 9-3 and winning 11-7 against the Whalley Chiefs on Saturday and then losing 4-2 and winning 3-2 against the North Delta Blue Jays the next day. The weekend finale featured an exciting finish that saw the teams trade leads late before Pirates catcher T.J. Mah hit a walkoff RBI single to score baserunner Connor Jones for the win. “We stayed positive, stayed up,” said Mah. “We weren’t out of it till the last out.” It was the sort of drama that has been common at Serauxmen Stadium the past few season. “It was kind of like the old teams, wasn’t it, coming back? It was kind of nice to see,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “All we’re looking for now is improvement. Winning two of four, it’s not up to the coaches’ standards, we don’t want it to be up to the players’ standards, but it’s a sign that we’re improving a little bit.” Garrett Goodall was the winning pitcher in the walk-off win, throwing a complete game, giving up two earned runs and striking out five. ith summer break approaching, day camps are one way for Nanaimo children to pass the time and develop skills. The City of Nanaimo’s parks department has a number of full and partial day camps for children aged three to 18 years, from the north to the south end of the city, according to Cheryl Krytor, a city recreation coordinator. “Day camps are a great way that we help kids achieve a healthy weight,” said Krytor. “It improves fitness with them, it’s a great place for them to meet friends for the summer and it improves their physical selfesteem, as well as it enhances health, growth and development.” Sean McKenzie, summer leader with the Bowen Explorers camp at Bowen Park, said children always seem a little shy at the beginning but

ies on their own, instead of being told how to behave,” James said. “Obviously if something goes overboard, it’s corrected but a lot of the times they get free time in the gym and in a

safe environment to interact with each other and structure their own games and make their own rules and play how they want to, which they don’t get a lot of opportunities to do in school and

daycare and what not,” he said. Lauren Rogers, summer leader of Adventure Sports Camp at Oliver Woods, said the focus of her camp is an active lifestyle. “We do a lot of gym games, swimming, we’re outside a lot and we also incorporate activities that kids might not get the chance to experience otherwise, such as football with the [Vancouver Island] Raiders and mini golf in Parksville and skimboarding at Blueback [Beach], it’s awesome, it’s a lot of fun,” she said.
