School year could end Thursday, pending strike vote Renee Andor Record Staff
The last day of class for Comox Valley students could be Thursday this year, according to Comox District Teachers’ Association president Steven Stanley. “June 12 could be the last day of school in the Comox Valley,
depending on the outcome of the (strike) vote,” Stanley said Friday. If teachers vote Monday and Tuesday to move to a full strike, Stanley said they could do so as early as Monday, June 16. Comox Valley teachers are already scheduled to strike Friday, June 13 as part of continuing rotating strikes around the province.
Monday/Tuesday strike vote specifies ‘up to and including’ full-scale walkout But, a vote in favour of escalating strike action doesn’t necessarily mean a full walkout, cautioned Stanley, because the strike vote specifies ‘up to and including a full walkout.’
“We don’t have to go to a full walkout,” said Stanley. “We could just increase it to two days of rotating strikes a week, something like that, and that hasn’t been determined, and it will
depend on what happens at the bargaining table.” BCPSEA has tabled a 7.3 per cent wage increase over six years, plus a $1,200 signing bonus if an agreement is signed by the end of the school year.

Treaty negotiations for the K’ómoks First Nation continue to linger, but Canada hopes to soon resume the process, once it sorts out fishery-related issues. The negotiation of salmonrelated fisheries issues at treaty tables in B.C will be informed by the findings and recommendations of the Cohen Commission — an inquiry into the decline of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River — says Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. “Its (federal government) priority is to ensure that fishery arrangements balance the rights of First Nations and all Canadians,” said Michelle Perron, media relations officer at Aboriginal Affairs. “We hope to be in a position to resume treaty fisheries negotiations shortly.” Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan noted approval of the critical fourth-stage Agreement-in-Principle was reached “quite happily.”

Heartfelt thanks from Sproule family Entire community involved in rescue efforts The Sproule family would like to thank everyone for their incredible dedication and support during the time that Jamie was missing in the bush. Jamie is now making steady progress at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He still needs lots of rest to recover from his harrowing experience so he is limited to visits from immediate family. We want first of all to thank the RCMP, Search and Rescue, and the Cumberland Fire and Rescue for their compassion and dedication. We also want to thank the hundreds of community volunteers who went out on search parties three times a day. Many had been trained by assisting Search and Rescue. Jamie was found by a group of volunteers working a very tight grid formation in very dense and greened over logging slash not far from our home. He had been missing for almost six days. Thanks also to the many people who provided nutritious food
for the search parties and the family. And, last but not
least, a big thank you goes out to all the people who have been
sending prayers and well wishes to Jamie from near and far.

Against all odds, Comox Valley man gets his heart Facing the prospect of risky surgery, local nurse gets the call regarding heart transplant
surreal a month later. “It’s indescribable at this point, it’s been a real miracle, how do you describe something like that,” says Chad. “After being in such rough shape for a couple of years, now having this heart, it’s just like night and day. “I came out of surgery like a champ and wanted to get up and go like the next day practically. “I think a lot of it was emotional too, like the whole thought of just having a new life and getting this opportunity, it was just so much all at once, it was incredible.”
Renee Andor Record Staff
Just one day before he was scheduled for a very risky surgery with a 50-per-cent chance of survival, Comox Valley man Chad Dwolinsky received the heart he had been waiting for. “There was only a 50/50 chance that he was going to survive the surgery,” recalls his wife Ashley. “And the feeling that I had gotten from the doctors now afterwards, I don’t think they even expected him to make the surgery. However, if he didn’t have the surgery the doctors said he only had a couple months left (to live).” Chad, 36, was born with a rare congenital heart defect. Although he’s had five open-heart surgeries over his life, he says he’s lived a fairly normal one, until a few years ago when his health started failing. He continued working full-time as a nurse at Casa Loma Seniors Village in Courtenay until September, when he was convinced to take medical leave by family and friends. Ashley estimates Chad spent half the past year in St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
Put on a list He was put on BC Transplant’s waiting list a few months ago, but the chances of receiving a heart were very slim, according to Ashley. Because of numerous blood transfusions over the years, the antibody levels in Chad’s blood are at 100 per cent, meaning his body would reject a heart transplant unless it came from a donor who also had high antibody levels. Due to the specific donor requirements, the search was opened up as far east as Manitoba

Chad and Ashley Dwolinsky remain in Vancouver for post-transplant procedures. Photo Submitted and down into the Northwestern United States. Near the end of April, Chad was faced with the choice of having two months to live while waiting for a heart, or undergoing risky surgery to put in an RVAD, which essentially would pump his heart for him. Chad decided to take the chance and opt for the surgery, and it was scheduled for Saturday, May 10. If successful, Chad would need to remain in the Lower Mainland for three months post-surgery for monitoring. He and Ashley came back to the Valley May 7 for two days to pack their things and tie up any loose ends.
3 a.m. phone call They had planned to visit family in Port Alberni Friday, May 9 before heading to Vancouver. “Well, at 3 a.m. Friday morning, May 9th our phone rings and

Chad must stay in the Lower Mainland for at least a couple more months, and Ashley has taken leave from her job at Coastal Community Credit Union in Courtenay. The couple has no financial assistance except for the CPP disability benefit Chad receives. Ashley’s co-workers and the Prime Chophouse and Wine Bar will hold a fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. June 19 at the Prime Chophouse. For $20 attendees will receive a meal and drink, with $5 going to Chad and Ashley. The evening will also feature a silent auction, which Coastal Community Credit Union’s Matt Beckett is gathering donations for. He can be contacted at 250-792-2293 or matt.beckett@ cccu.ca.
Sign your donor card
Meanwhile, Chad and Ashley say promoting the importance of registering to be an organ donor is a cause very close to their heart. They urge the public to consider registering to be an organ donor, noting making your own decision about it means your family won’t be faced with making a hard decision during a time of stress and tragedy. According to BC Transplant, nearly 85 per cent of British Columbians say they support organ donation, but just 15 per cent have registered as donors. Personal hardships continue as red tape strangles pension bill Scott Stanfield Record Staff
Marilyn hopes life will become a little easier when the Pension Benefits Standards Act (Bill 38) becomes law. But until the B.C. Legislature reconvenes in the fall, the Comox resident needs to make do with a onetime withdrawal maximum of $9,000 from a locked-in retirement fund. Marilyn, who requested the Record not use her last name, is off work due to hip surgery. She has a life investment fund (LIF) from the Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, where she worked 20-plus years. Her 70-year-old husband Ken has a small pension. Accessing her savings would reduce financial stress and provide freedom to choose the direction she desires with her family in her retirement years. “It’s not just me. It’s provincewide,” said Marilyn, who has undergone two hip replacement surgeries. “Speak to anyone who has been in any kind of union position, and who has a locked-
in fund, they’re all in the same boat.” As of age 55, she is entitled to $9,000 once a year but cannot withdraw further funds a second time. But even when she reaches 65, Marilyn will only be able to access a portion of her money. She would like to have at least another $1,000 per month to live. “It’s our money,” Marilyn said. “We should be able to spend it as we see fit, because we are all adults.” She met Friday in Courtenay with staff from the B.C. Ombudsperson Office, which can investigate complaints about ministries and boards, among other bodies. A modernized Bill 38 was passed and received royal assent in 2012. But the rules and regulations, which include hardship clauses for seniors and pensioners, still need to be written. Alberta and B.C. are to harmonize their rules based upon the Ontario model. The Alberta model allows LIF withdrawals up to 50 per cent. Recently, the Province also

passed a Pension Benefits Standards Amendment Act (Bill 10) that corrects a number of technical issues and omissions found in the 2012 modernized act. However, the new act cannot come into force until regulations are developed and approved by Cabinet. “The new act does provide legislative authority for regulations that would permit the unlocking of funds that were transferred from pension plans,” says Glen Plummer, senior communications officer. “The government has indicated publicly that unlocking of funds will be permitted only in limited circumstances, including financial hardship. This is to ensure pension funds are used for their intended purpose, to provide pension plan members with a source of retirement income.” Finalizing regulations is a high priority for the Ministry of Finance, Plummer added. Government expects to have a fully developed set of new regulations available for Cabinet review sometime this year.

Treaty: Approaching stages five and six Continued from A1 Broader issues are now at the forefront as negotiations approach stages five and six — final agreement and implementation, respectively. “Some of the local sticky issues — issues around Goose Spit — I think they’ve more or less worked themselves out,” Duncan said. “I’m actually delighted that the First Nations have a sense of urgency about it. I think that’s great.”
Treaty negotiations for the KFN began more than 18 years ago. The AIP offers the K’ómoks people $17.5 million and about 5,000 acres of land, including the return of the tip of Goose Spit, which had been a contentious stumbling block. It also includes about 2,000 acres at the Royston woodlot, and land at Williams Beach, Kelsey Bay, the base of Mt. Washington and Lot BL7 near

Teachers: Final exams will be written even if a full walkout is initiated Continued from A1
Teachers dropped their wage increase proposal last week to an increase of 9.75 per cent over four years, plus cost of living adjustments each year, expected to bump the total up to 12.75 per cent. Other issues the two sides disagree on are around class size and composition. Bargaining talks have been ongoing for 16 months. The BC School Employers’ Asso-
ciation has applied to the Labour Relations Board to have teachers services required for report card completion — including preparing and marking exams and submitting final grades — deemed essential, according to the Ministry of Education. A ruling is expected shortly. Comox Valley superintendent Sherry Elwood said Friday exams will go ahead even if teachers move to a full walkout and
the LRB does not rule these services essential. “At the moment we are required to offer both the marking and supervision of exams,” she said of administrative staff. “Principals, vice principals and district management will be assisting. We will have to take students from where they are in terms of marks whenever job action begins to affect course completion and advancement to the next grade.”
Stanley noted the LRB’s ruling last week — which upheld the lockout imposed by the BC Public School Employers’ Association and the 10 per cent wage reduction — means most Comox Valley teachers will refrain from extracurricular activities. BCPSEA has said teachers will not be restricted from “extracurricular and volunteer activities,” including graduation ceremonies during the
partial lockout, even if they’re held on school property. But, Stanley called the idea behind the lockout “fundamentally flawed.” “They can’t dock our pay and say that they’re taking away work and then tell us to work anyway. “If the justification for taking our pay is that we’re not doing as much work, then we shouldn’t do as much work.” According to Elwood, graduation ceremonies
will go forward with or without teacher assistance.

School support workers reach tentative agreement Record staff B.C. kindergarten to Grade 12 support staff reached a tentative framework agreement Saturday with the Province. According to the Ministry of Education, the five-year framework agreement covers about 34,000 support staff, most of whom are CUPE. If ratified, the contract will extend from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019. The framework includes provincially-funded wage increases totalling about 5.5 per cent over five years, with potential for more if B.C.’s economy exceeds annual forecasts set by the Economic Forecast Council in the last four years of the agreement. For more information, visit http://www.cupe. bc.ca/ or http://www.bcpsea.bc.ca/. The deal was reached after five days of talks.

Have you ever dreamed of a handsome buccaneer sweeping you off your feet and getting “up close and personal” with you? That can happen at Thunder, where our own swashbuckling pirate brings a romance novel to life. Perhaps a courageous warrior from Roman days is more to your liking. Wait until he starts shedding his armour! A man in uniform is always sexy, but one out of uniform is even better. See for yourself as our Aussie hunk sheds his clothes. And we know our fireman sets hearts aflame as he peels off his outfit and shows what being in good shape looks like. If gangsters from the ’20s intrigue you, then we have a buffed guy who makes pulses beat

Scott and Worst close out jazz season Our regular Thursday Night Jazz Series concludes this week with a fifth annual appearance by Jennifer Scott and Rene Worst. This special concert has its origins in the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 when we received a request from this great Canadian jazz duo: could they play a Thursday night concert, because they wanted to escape from the madness of Vancouver. The result was one of the most memorable jazz evenings, where they played “for the hat” before a packed house. It was so successful that they made repeat appearances during the last three years; again to a capacity audience. Well, Jennifer and Rene are back at their request for a fifth consecutive year. We feel honoured to share this relationship with them, and to have them on our stage once more at 7:30 p.m. Jennifer Scott is a singer and pianist born in Vancouver. She specializes in jazz, blues, and world music. She is considered one of the more important jazz artists working in Canada and the United States today. As well as being a performer, she arranges and writes jazz and pop tunes, with several CDs containing a combination of original tunes, tunes she has arranged, and more traditional tunes. She has also appeared on many CBC recordings and has worked with many other musicians
both live and in studio. Rene Worst has been a professional bassist since 1971. His virtuosic bass playing has been a Canadian treasure for many years on both acoustic and electric basses. He is as gifted on fretless as he is on acoustic - a rarity in the industry. Rene was educated both in Canada and the US. He is one of the founding members of the noted fusion band “Skywalk” and has anchored and produced six recordings with them. Rene is also a highly regarded producer. Jennifer and Rene are joined by special guest Nanaimo drummer James McCrae. James is well known to local jazz lovers, and his appearance will expose us to another (cooler) facet of his prowess, compared to his more recent performances this season. Rene reported last week from a teaching commission in Colorado Rockies, “We will be featuring music from our two recent CD releases and some great Brazilian tunes to go with your summer weather!” Those readers who have experienced these wonderful artists need no further encouragement to see the show. For others, come and hear the music for yourself: it doesn’t come any better. For a sampler, visit www. jenniferscott.ca and listen to the mp3 tracks.

Rock the Block goes Saturday Record Staff Cumberland will be taking their music to the street on Saturday as the Waverley Hotel presents its annual Rock The Block concert that evening. Vancouver band Delhi 2 Dublin will headline the show, before heading to the United States for a festival tour south of the 49th parallel. Roots Roundup will take to the stage on Dunsmuir Avenue as well, entertaining the crowd with their eclectic sound – a hybrid of rock, reggae, ska, folk and punk. Fiddle player Michael Fraser will be there for a set of gypsy jazz, as will American entertainer DJ Eliazar, who has been spinning tunes around the globe while collecting tunes on his travels here and there since the tender age of 14. From the outskirts of Chicago, to homegrown talent, Island musicians will also be featured at Rock the Block. The Courtenay/ Nanaimo-based electronic music production team Wax Candy visuals has become a
familiar host to venues across Vancouver Island and will be on hand to show off its cutting edge lighting and mapping techniques. And Gordon Carter, Vancouver Island’s answer to Bruce Cockburn, will perform a selection of his songs, inspired by the labour history of
Cumberland. Spry Bry and Bizarnival will also be there. Tickets are $42 and 10 per cent of the proceeds go towards the Cumberland Forest. Tickets are available at Bop City, the Waverley Hotel, by phone 250-336-8322 and online at cumberlandvillageworks.com.

The 31st Bayview Place Island Savings Open got off to a great start for Comox’s Riley Wheeldon, who was tied for third place after Thursday’s first round. But he followed up his opening round 65 with a 69, 73 and 72 to finish in a four-way tie for 57th place at the PGA Tour Canada event at Uplands Golf Course in Victoria. “Tough weekend at the Bayview Place Island Savings Open,” Wheeldon commented. “But it is a pleasure to play in this event at Uplands with these fans and volunteers.” Next on Wheeldon’s schedule is the Vancouver Open this weekend. The Comox Valley golfer is now 31st on the Order Of Merit, where he finished runner-up last year. Wheeldon is an inaugural member of The Five, the first five players to graduate from the PGA Tour

Maple Pool United placed fourth overall at the Canada Street Soccer Cup, held May 28-31 in North Vancouver. “In round robin we finished second out of eight, which is totally awesome,” said Grant Shilling of the Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society, who organized and coaches the team. “We lost our two close playoff games. “What I was really pleased with was the solidarity of the team and the diversity of the team,” Shilling said. “We had players from the ages of 15 to 52. We had Nigerian exchange students with us, we had people who are either sleeping outside or work still in a shelter. “It was a very diverse team that came together for a terrific outcome. As a coach and outreach worker I couldn’t be more pleased,” he said of the nine-player Maple Pool squad.
MAPLE POOL UNITED gathers for a team cheer. Kurt Heinrich, a spokesperson for the Vancouver Street Soccer League that hosted the event, said there were seven teams competing, with Victoria, Kelowna, North Shore, Woodwards (DTES), Covenant House and the VSSL joining Maple Pool. Local organizers and Street Soccer Canada used this tournament as an opportunity to scout players for selection to the 2014 Canadian Street Soccer
tournament will see 64 nations and over 500 players travel to South America to show the world how a ball has helped change their lives. This will include players representing reigning champions Brazil (men’s) and Mexico (women’s). Summer hoops camp returning The annual Comox Valley Summer Basketball Camp is quickly approaching. This camp is for basketball enthusiasts in Grades 3 through 12 and this 24th edition of the camp has had children from around the world attend in the past. The Lake Trail section of the basketball camp features local product and teacher supreme Blake Tobacca, who has developed a solid reputation for being not only a great teacher of the game, but his work with the younger athletes is always fun stuff. He’ll be assisted by longtime coach Don Herman from Maple Ridge. Don has coached numerous provincial teams, and he is a former provincial champion coach with his girls’ team at Maple Ridge. He’ll also help with the girls camp in the afternoons at G.P. Vanier. Larry Street is the prime organizer of the camps and he will spearhead the older boys at Vanier in the mornings, then work with the girls of all ages in the afternoons at Vanier. This Basketball BC Hall of Fame coach has coached many provincial teams, over 100 teams at the school level, many provincial tournament teams, and has sent over 50 players to various college and professional programs. “We think we have lots to offer our local kids, give them something to do that first week of July, and our goal is always to help with their understanding of the game,” Street said. The camp runs June 30 to July 4, and forms can be obtained by e-mailing Street at larrystreetcar@gmail.com, or phone 250-703-3646. There are forms at all the schools, and the community centres. Times: Young boys 9 a.m. to noon at Lake Trail. Older boys 9 a.m. to noon at Vanier. All the girls from 1 to 4 p.m. at G.P. Vanier. – Comox Valley Summer Basketball Camp
Thunderball season wraps up Thunderball Basketball wrapped up Sunday, June 1. The Grade 4-5 Boys/ Girls League played at Lake Trail, and head coach Blake Tobacca was extremely pleased with the improvements and efforts the players made over seven weeks. The coaches sure made a big difference: Blake Tobacca, Ken McRae, Colin Tinga, Coen Loepkey, Colton Derycke, Jordan Bell, Stephanie Johnson, Susie Hang, Hope Lewis, Darren Smith, Jordan Bell and Chloe Speed. The Grade 6-7 Girls were at G.P. Vanier and the players displayed a huge improvement over the seven weeks of play and practice. The passing and cutting to the hoop was awesome and the girls played great team basketball. From all the coaches – “Great job, girls!” Thanks to coaches: Jakob Jungwirth, Faeryn Curtin, Jessica Pitre, Aleasha Wiebe, Ty Edwards, Michaela Ashlee, and John Lapp. The Grade 6-7 Boys
also played at Vanier. Bulls vs. Pacers Coach Pitre was impressed with the Bulls today. The shots and the passing were good and this kept the game tight. Nolan Piket was a flash today and Ian Rutledge was a terror on the boards. For the Pacers – first win of the short season! The boys were elated, as was coach Jake Fernandes. He described the game as fast paced, and it ended going to overtime. Pacers go ahead. Then the Bulls were fouled with a chance to tie again, but the free throw was missed and, hooray Pacers. Nets. vs. Thunder Coach Tracy Tran lost her voice cheering on her Thunder team, but alas the Nets won 50-38. The Thunder, led by Braden Perfitt, played one of their best games, but the Nets were just too much. Ryan Moonen was the Nets’ catalyst and played very aggressive defence. He also had his way using his size inside. Coach Jordan Balon says it was a pleasure coaching
Special O. curling sign-up The Comox Valley Curling Club and Comox Valley Special Olympics will be holding registration for the Special O Curling program on June 11 at 7 p.m. at the CRA Lewis Centre in Courtenay. The Special O curling program has been offered in the Comox Valley for approximately 20 years, with 2003 BC Master Women’s curling champion Sandra Gallaway at the helm since 1996. The Special O program introduces persons with intellectual dis-
abilities to competition sports, which enhance their opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and share gifts, skills and friendship. The Comox Valley Curling Centre provides the ice and the facilitators, and practices are held every Monday from October through April and is free of charge to Special O participants. This year from the approximately 25 Special O curlers that participate in the pro-

these fellows. Skywalkers vs. Spurs Players of the game for the Spurs was Cedric Rochsteiner and Eric Jung, who helped influence their teammates to play tough defence and run hard. For the Skywalkers, Jeremy Knopp was a terror on defence, and ran the fast break very well. He was helped by Hayden Fieret on a grand scale with lots of great passes. The Skywalkers went through the whole season undefeated – great job, boys! Sonics vs. Suns This was a close one, won 43-39 by the Sonics. A fun game to watch, and the Player of the Game was sharpshooter Cedar Lloyd. This was a back and forth battle that highlighted fast breaks, many steals, and some awesome plays. Coach Bryce Olsen says he had so much fun with all the amazing boys on his team. The Thunderball Boys League thanks their coaches: Bryce Olsen, Joss Biggins, Jordan Balon, Brandon Balon, Danny Yeo, Jake Fernandes,
Foster Dewitt, Tracy Tran, Danelle Campbell, Dawson German, Maddie Naswell, Tyler Knopp, Chase
Hobenshield, and Tony Edwards, and all the others who chipped in. – Thunderball Basketball

LOST AND FOUND
Wendy J. Thompson- Gibson May 15, 1965 – June 5,2014 Wendy was born in Vancouver BC and passed away peacefully after a 21 month battle with cancer at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox. She is survived by her son Calvin, husband Rick, parents Gordon and Sally, sisters Tracey (Russ) and Meg (Mike), brother in laws Peter and Ally (Leah), Calvin’s father Gary, and a large extended family. Wendy spent her youth skiing at the family cabin at Whistler and enjoying many family summer vacations throughout BC. After attending university, Wendy chose a profession in Occupational Therapy. For almost 20 years Wendy was a highly respected occupational therapist in the Comox Valley. As clinician, leader, mentor and educator, she made a difference in the lives of many; her patients and their families, the teams she worked with and laterally led, and the students she guided and mentored. She played an integral role in developing specialized services for seniors on Vancouver Island and in particular in the Comox Valley and North Island communities. She was passionate about spending time with her family and her friends and loved to cook and ski. She also took the extra minute to ensure that everyone was “OK. Wendy’s happy place was Splash Mountain in Disneyland. She enjoyed various cruise vacations, trips to Mexico, wine tours, camping trips and boating trips to Desolation Sound. Wendy, Rick and Calvin spent their winters on Mount Washington where she was active in the alpine ski club. She just simply loved to ski. Her mountain home brought her much joy and was the place where she developed her passion for cooking. Following her diagnosis, she battled through 32 rounds of chemotherapy yet still enjoyed a return trip to Disneyland, relished three ski trips in BC where she was able to cheer for her son Calvin on the ski race course. Wendy even skied off her season pass this past winter!! Many thanks and deep appreciation to Dr. Wainberg and the other doctors, oncologists, surgeons, nurses and health care workers who were all integral members of Wendy’s health care team. Service will be June 21, 2014 at 1pm at Comox Valley Funeral Home on Ryan Road in Courtenay. No flowers please, donations in Calvin’s name to Mark Isfeld School Terry Fox Run September 2014. Her ashes will be spread in various places at a later date, possibly even at her “happy place!

PETER KOSTIUK
NOVEMBER 10, 1941 - JUNE 1, 2014 Peter passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Peter was the youngest of seven children, born to Nickolas and Dora Kostiuk in Kelliher, Saskatchewan. He spent his formative years in Kelliher before moving to Courtenay, where he met his soon to be bride, Gale Robinson at the bowling alley in Courtenay. Love quickly bloomed and they were wed on December 26, 1962. Peter worked his early years employed with the Overwaitea grocery chain for over 20 years. He was an avid fisherman who also loved camping and hunting. He was a parttime inventor, and in 1967 Peter and Gale formed Kost Klip Manufacturing Limited. He invented and produced merchandising aids and sign holders used in retail outlets. One of his many inventions was the GSP 10 from which profits were earmarked for charitable works. True to their purpose they went on to sponsor 65 children and one missionary family in developing countries. Peter and Gale continued to operate Kost Klip and sponsor many charities over the years with the profits from their successful operation, until they sold the company in 1995. Peter was predeceased by his parents and six siblings. He is survived by his loving wife Gale, daughter Patti Epp (Dale), grandchildren Isabel and Justus, of New Zealand and daughter Sandy Vanderveen (Hugh), grandchildren Mandolin, Marina and Tegan of Courtenay. Double gold for Blue Moon at Canadian Wine Championships Scott Stanfield Record Staff
It’s been another banner year for Blue Moon Estate Winery, which won 18 medals at three competitions. Blue Moon won its first double gold award for Moon Shine — an apple and pear table wine — at the All Canadian Wine Championships in Windsor, Ont. It also picked up a pair of silver medals for Lunacy (blueberry/ blackberry) and Sirius (apple), and three bronze medals for Dusk (blueberry), the Big Bang (raspberry port-styled wine) and Moon Light (Asian pear). The winery cleaned up at the NorthWest Wine Summit in Oregon, highlighted by a gold medal and Best Value award for Sirius, along with six silvers and two bronze medals. It also won bronze for Dusk and Khaos — a black currant portstyled wine — at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, held each year in Rochester, NY. The winery has now won 52 awards in just four years. “It’s pretty consistent with the best sellers at the winery this year,” co-owner Marla Limousin said of this year’s winners. She says fruit wines are gaining ground in the wine world in
terms of respect and popularity. “The liquor stores are starting to carry it whereas probably five years ago it was a pretty tough sell,” she said. “Most of our wine went out from here, and now we’re moving it down the Island.” “It’s all small batch,” her husband George Ehrler added. “It’s as local as I can get the product. If I can get the product certified organic, I do.” The couple opened Blue Moon at Nature’s Way Farm five years ago. For a relatively new industry in the Comox Valley, Limousin says all local wineries have won awards at competitions. “The Island is coming into its own,” said
Ehrler, who figures there are more than 40 wineries on Vancouver
Island, including the Gulf Islands. Besides wine, the
farm yields value-added products including jams, pestos and preserves, which Ehrler and Limousin sell at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market. Impending legislative changes would help their bottom line if wine tastings and sales are permitted at markets and festivals. The couple hopes to launch their first car-
bonated cider in conjunction with the June 21 solstice. Blue Moon also hosts cooking classes. “It’s food, farm and wine,” Limousin said. The winery hosts A Perfect Pairing July 20 from 1 - 4 p.m. The fourth annual event will feature recent work by Valley artist Juanita Olson. “It’s a lovely after-
noon of art and wine,” Limousin said. Blue Moon is located at 4905 Darcy Rd. off Condensory. The tasting room is open Friday to Monday from 1 - 5 p.m. After June 15, it is open seven days a week. Call 250-338-9765 or visit www.bluemoonwinery.ca for more information.

Judicial system flawed
The Moncton tragedy of last week, where three Mounties were allegedly murdered by a local resident, is far from being resolved. Yes, a suspect surrendered after a manhunt that paralyzed the city for more than 24 hours, in an incident eerily similar to the pursuit of the Boston Marathon bombers. But the Moncton issue is just getting started. Sadly, this case will be open for a long time, despite the plethora of witnesses, and video evidence. Should be cut-and-dried, no? Not in Canada. Pity. This case will be dragged out in court, no doubt costing the taxpayers millions of dollars. We’ve seen it all before, far too often. The Robert Pickton trial comes to mind. Closer to home, there’s the Molly Burton hitand-run case, in which the sentencing was just recently put over for another month. The accused in this case pleaded guilty, and yet sentencing has now been pushed back on at least three occasions. Then there is the 2011 Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver. There are accused in that incident that have still not had their day in court! In comparison, there was a similar riot in the streets of London, in August of 2011. Within four days of those riots, more than 1,000 rioters had been charged, and sentences were being handed out within a week. The majority of those who were found guilty – at least those who were sentenced to two years or less – are already out of jail, having served their penance. Section 11 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures of the right to a fair and speedy trial. “Speedy” is indeed a relative term. Even a melting glacier does so at a speed. Do we have the worst judicial system in the world? Of course not. Far from it. But it’s far from the best, either. And for those seeking closure in Moncton, that day will not come anytime soon.

(Access the following link for a profile of the Whistler solution bit.ly/1ol3fyt) I can’t imagine that the people of Whistler are any more creative than we are. Why can’t we follow Whistler’s lead? Actually, we can. To begin, though, we need our own madein-the-Comox Valley plan. We also need an independent organization to evaluate projects, to promote the most pressing ones and to find the money to put buildings and associated services together and support projects, existing and new ones, when and where they are viable. The will seems to be there among local elected officials to do something. Braidwood would not be possible otherwise, but the City of Courtenay cannot and should not go it alone. We cannot ever hope to speak with one voice on this issue if we don’t get together in this Valley to find solutions to this problem collectively. Local governments, ministries, non-profits, everybody needs to be involved.

Say ‘no’ to taxpayer-funded improvements to curling rink Dear editor, We are very concerned that we haven’t seen anything in either of the papers about the deadline coming up for opposing the Comox Valley Recreation Complexes Bylaw 327,2014, regarding expensive improvements to the curling rink, which will be
added to taxpayers’ bills. The council chose to use the Alternative Approval Process, an underhanded method whereby this bill automatically passes unless a sufficient number of people take the time and energy to go to the CVRD office and sign an opposition form.
So all those opposed to this bill, please take note: the deadline for registering your opposition is Friday June 13, so be sure to stop by the CVRD main office at 600 Comox Road and fill out your form! Summer Joy Merville

Hospice cash not so generous Dear editor, The local papers have given much publicity and praise to our M.L.A. Don MacRae because the provincial government has provided $250,000 for hospice beds at the local hospital. Yes, it’s nice that the money was provided. Question: Does Mr. MacRae and his party deserve such lavish praise? In my opinion, no. You see the provincial government has spent a great deal more money on other things which were of no benefit to the sick and dying in this province. Ms. Clark spent $11 million on a Bollywood extravaganza in Vancouver prior to the last provincial election. Just think of what that money could have done for the dying taxpaying people of this province. Just $1 million could have

paid for 16 hospice beds at our local hospital. If the whole $11 million had been spent on hospice beds in this province the dying and their families might be able to face it with some dignity instead of having to die on a four-bed ward, surrounded by strangers coming and going. The film industry in B.C. receives $284 million a year in tax rebates and the mining industry has almost a billion dollars coming in rebates. It is suggested the $250,000 is just a drop in the bucket. It bought the Liberals more free
press than if they had to pay for that much ink. The $250,000 was needed, but it isn’t a generous amount. More is spent by the Premier and her aides just travelling to other countries every few months. More money needs to be spent on the dying taxpaying citizens of this province and any politician who can stand up in public and pretend that $250,000 is a generous “gift” is a better actor than Sean Penn. Hurray for Comox Valley hospice beds; it’s about time Dear editor, It‘s exciting to hear that the Comox Valley will finally have hospice beds available for people who are unable to remain at home to die. When I hear that the Ministry of Health has invested $17 million since 2010 in this care, I do have to ask how much of that has been invested on Vancouver Island? Personally I think it’s long overdue that this very impor-
tant kind of care is available in our community. Unfortunately, it will only be four beds when we could easily use twice that many given the number of retirees we have here with no local families to care for them at home. I am also pleased to know that in doing so, St. Joseph’s General Hospital, The Views and Comox Valley Hospice Society made certain that we would not end up losing any
nursing home beds. Kudos to all of them for ensuring that residents of the Views will not be displaced. I also understand they will not be moved to another facility unless it is by their choice. On behalf of all of us who have been in the position to care for loved ones who are dying, thank you to all that have worked so hard to make this happen. Sheila Gunn Comox

Dear editor, I am writing this letter in support of the Comox Valley Regional District’s alternate approval process to upgrade the “ice out” area of the Comox Valley Curling Club. I have been a member of the Curling Club since 2010 and did not realize when I first showed up to try junior curling that it would change my life the way it has. Right away I very much enjoyed the sport and started competing in bonspiels up and down the Island. This past season I reached my goal of competing at BC Winter Games, which was an amazing experience, as well as traveling to Junior Provincials. I have made friends from teams all over the province and I spend about four to five days a week at the rink playing and practising with the many people I have gotten to know right here. This past season, I have also been volunteering twice a week helping and learning to prepare the ice as well as teaching the younger kids
Liberals are hypocritical Dear editor, How hypocritical of Christy Clark’s so-called Liberals, bashing social services, education, and on and on, on all financial fronts, not long after giving themselves a nice 19 or 20 per cent raise. Docking teachers for time spent being locked out or on the line might set a nice precedent. How much time has our “government” spent in the Legislature, working? Maybe 35 days, give or take, and at what cost? Let us pay them on performance. Think of the programs (ie: education, medical, social services) that could easily be fully funded on the money saved! The successful parasite does not kill its host. Our politicians could learn from them. M. Salter Comox
about curling. To say that the curling club is my second home is an understatement, but there is no place I’d rather be. I have grown up there and believe it is a great place for other kids to spend their time in the future. Jordan Koster Courtenay

For-profit clinics vs. Medicare There’s a legal challenge in motion that could erase the principle of Canadian Medicare, as we know it – a health care system based on need, not on ability to pay, as in the United States. Dr. Brian Day, owner of Vancouver’s for-profit Cambie Surgery Centre and a leading proponent of privatized health care, has launched a constitutional challenge to Medicare law in B.C. This challenge aims
to strike down provincial health legislation that limits the forprofit delivery of medically necessary services. The case is being called the most significant constitutional challenge in Canadian history. The trial date is now set for September 2014 in BC Supreme Court. At their June 19 AGM, the Comox Valley Council of Canadians presents Pat Savage of the BC Health Coalition who
