Players on the Nakusp Minor Soccer teams were treated on Wednesday and Saturday with visits from Kaslo and Revelstoke squads. Kaslo’s mixed team played two games against the two Nakusp teams on Wednesday night. In game one, keepers Adam Volansky and Kirnen Troute backed up the barrage of goals scored by the Na-
kusp squad with a decisive shut-out. Tim Barisoff kicked off the scoring, which was followed by netted efforts from Devon Coates and the infamous “twin assist” goals from Kylie and Garrett Waterfield. The Nakusp team won 6-0. In the second game, Kaslo was all warmed up and fought hard for two goals, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-2 game final against the Nakusp Red Shirts. Riley Drediger was the first Red Shirt
to tickle the twine and was followed by a second half hattrick from Troute, who played in both games. On Saturday the Revelstoke and Nakusp all-girl squads faced off during an intense back and forth battle on the sunny pitch. The teams were evenly matched, trading off control of the game and close chances, each trying to find chinks in the opponent’s defensive amour. Kimberly Roberts almost settled the match in the second half
when she was moved up to the striker position. In a decisive rush at the net Roberts sent the ball flying, just missing the top right corner by a post. The game could not decide on a winner, and the match ended with a draw. Revelstoke and Nakusp teams faced off again with the under 10 girls playing a frantic small sided game following the older girls game. Nakusp was defeated with the lone goal scored by Julie Faucher.

In 2011 the Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative initiated the Coordinated Response for Child and Youth Victims (CRCYV) project to build collaboration in support of how the needs of child and youth victims of abuse, violence and neglect are being met in the West Kootenay Boundary area. The goal of the project is to improve access to services and help to coordinate the various agencies currently in place into a more unified and cohesive approach to providing essential services to children and youth in need. Lynda Dechief, the CRCYV Regional Coordinator, explains that service providers in the West Kootenay Boundary region are united in their desire to “see that when a child comes forward as a victim that they get a response quickly.” They want to see the response be seamless; that word came up in all of the communities. They don’t want anyone to fall through the gaps, but also have no overlaps in service.” The multi-phase process of CRCYV began with the administration of a Feasibility Assessment in 2011 to determine if a traditional Child Advocacy Centre, the model used in urban centers, would be practical in a larger geographical context. The centre would have been located centrally, likely Castelgar, and would seek to serve the other four areas across the West Kootenay Boundary region, including greater Trail, Nelson and
area, Nakusp and area and the Boundary. However, the results of the assessment determined that a stationary centre could not effectively serve the large proposed area. “We are a really geographically large and dispersed region” Dechief says, “People want to access services in their own communities through the agencies that they already trust.” This prompted the movement into Participants map out some of the services children and youth stage two, which saw might access in the Arrow and Slocan Lakes area. Sixty-first in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names A few weeks ago, this column looked at the ghost town of Ferguson and accompanied it with a picture of its last real landmark, the Hotel Lardeau. That resulted in a call from Mike Laughton, best known as the first Nelson-born hockey player to make the NHL, whose grandfather John Cooper (Jack) Laughton (1874-1958) operated the hotel for many years. Jack and brothers Alexander (Sandy) and Robert came to Canada from Scotland’s Orkney Islands. It’s not clear when the hotel was built or if the Laughtons were its original proprietors, but in an early mention, the Revelstoke Herald of August 23, 1899 stated: “J. Laughton leaves tomorrow morning for Ferguson to get the Hotel Lardeau in shape for opening.” Soon after, ads appeared claiming the hotel was the “Best $2 a day house in the Lardeau … Choicest wines, liquors, and cigars. Headquarters for miners and mining men.” Jack and Sandy first show up as Ferguson hoteliers in the 1900-01 BC directory. Sandy continued to run the hotel until his death of consumption in 1916 while Jack and Robert concentrated on the Victoria and Selkirk hotels in Revelstoke. Pete Cameron acquired the Lardeau Hotel in 1916 but a dozen years later sold it back to Jack,
who brought wife Margaret (Peggy) and four children to town, including Mike’s father. Jack remained there until a year before his death. According to Milton Parent in Circle of Silver, “He had resisted moving from Ferguson even though making a living in this business had been marginal for many years … Jack’s less-than-elegant approach to proprietorship of the Lardeau appealed to many of his customers …” Mike remembers visiting his grandparents in Ferguson when the town was down to about 15 people. “I don’t know how many patrons the hotel had,” he says. “Every room had those beautiful washbowls and kerosene lamps. We always went up before the end of October. Once snow set in, it was hard to get in there. There was an old livery stable across the street and we used to go there and watch horses being shod.” The abandoned hotel was a popular subject for photographers including Donovan Clemson and Ellis Anderson. It was still standing as of 1965, but disappeared by 1973. The BC Archives has its guest register covering 1910-17. In 2008, on the 50th anniversary of his grandfather’s death, Mike and wife Georgi went to Ferguson to see the hotel’s site. “We looked around and there was nothing,” Georgi says. “It was a strange and sad feeling standing in the open lot and visualizing what was there when he was young.” For more photos, see nelsonstar.com.

At the Edgewood Legion (234 Granby), Edgewood BC Workshop leader Gillian Sanders has helped to install more than 90 electric fences to successfully protect livestock and/or fruit trees from both black and grizzly bears. Correctly installed and maintained electric fencing provides a cost-effective and easy solution to prevent or stop bear conflicts. Beekeepers have successfully used electric fencing to protect beehives from bears since the 1930’s, and when used correctly this tool will also protect small livestock such as chickens, other poultry, goats, sheep, pigs, calves, or any other bear attractant. This workshop will discuss different e-fencing designs for permanent and temporary fences that can be adapted to your particular needs.

Our View
Strike: Taking sides
Strikes may be a necessary evil from time to time, but nobody truly enjoys them. Not the people walking the picket lines, not the employers — who are usually losing money, or productivity or both — and not the public who often end up being the ones most impacted by job action. Take the BC teachers rotating strike for example. Yes, the teachers are losing money on the days they strike. Yes, the government is losing popularity points as the work action continues, but the ones most affected are thousands of children and parents. The students are losing valuable time that could be spent in class. They are missing out on school field trips, plays and in some cases even graduation ceremonies may be hampered. Parents have to either make arrangements for extra child care on the strike days, or in some cases miss a day of work to stay home with younger kids. Who do you blame? The teachers? The government? Both? It really depends on your personal frame of reference. Is the government being cheap or are the teachers being greedy? There’s no simple answer. However, here in the Kootenay it appears that momentum may have swung in favour of the teachers, all because of a letter written by Dr. Todd Kettner. A psychologist for the school district, Dr. Kettner has spent more than 70 hours of overtime helping students deal with recent tragedies — the canoe fatalities on Slocan Lake, the death of a parent and other tribulations. He’s a dedicated professional who spends countless hours of his own time helping our kids. His letter details his work, the needs of the students he serves and of the close to $600 deducted from his pay cheque by the government because of the labour dispute. That money has now been refunded. While his story may not represent every teacher’s experiences, it’s still a powerful tale that can sway public opinion. In the propaganda games, it’s teachers 1, government 0.

Volunteering for Special Olympics in Nakusp A thoughtful and inspired way in which older citizens residing within the Nakusp region can make a significant difference in the lives of intellectually disabled persons, is to actively participate as a volunteer with Special Olympics (SO) Nakusp. Founded just over five years ago within our own area, the enthusiastic team consisting at present of seven registered athletes coupled with supportive community volunteers, plays an important role in the lives of each individual and their families. Favourite sports activities include bocce, golf and
curling along with joining in fun events including the community parades as well as selling raffle tickets - the proceeds of which are used to cover the travel and associated expenses which occur during various competitions. Asked what are the expectations which SO Nakusp are seeking within its company of volunteers, board chair Hans Sparreboom, a retired school teacher, quickly responded to the question with the following list of merits: “volunteers must have a positive attitude, and be understanding, caring and committed”. “Older persons bring a

Nakusp Mountain Bike
On Thursday afternoon, the Nakusp Youth Centre hosted a group of likeminded peddle-heads to discuss what the future might look like for the biking community in Nakusp. Members of the online biking community Nakusp Freeride Downhill Mountain Bikers as well as youth representing local BMX and park riders were
present at the talking session to comment on the current biking conditions and brainstorm ideas for future projects. Cassia Parent, Nakusp Youth Coordinator, invited trail building veterans Nate Lott and Yan Labrecque from Rossland to facilitate the discussions. Lott and Labrecque have been building trails for six years and run the trail building education program, “D.I.G. 2 Ride” (Design Innovate Grow). The Rossland riders are biking visionaries who recognize the growArrow Lakes Health Care Auxiliary ing demand for the transformation of select areas of public land into a sustainable network of multi-use trails that incorporates speed, efficiency and creativity in their design. Their trial building program was contrived to directly involve youth in the design and the labor of bike July 11, 2014 & projects to promote riding and an appreciation for the outdoors. August 11th 2014 The roundtable talk began with exploring the downhill trails alActivity Room, ready frequented by bikers and Minto House, identified the hot spots of use. Lott questioned, “who owns the land 97 1st Avenue, Nakusp. and who can we approach to start utilizing the land?” adding that All Welcome crown land is ideal because private is much harder to work with. The youth present waited and

listened patiently to the downhill discussion until they were provoked to contribute their input. The voices of the youth turned the group’s attention towards the BMX and park riding perspective, identifying the majority of the kids in town ride in town. David Faucher expressed an interest in a dirt jump park because the “skate park (located by the Nakusp arena) is the only thing we have.” Faucher and the youth then went into tales of their independent attempts to build dirt jumps around town and how they are short lived, inevitably taken down by village workers or community members. An effort has been made by the school district to answer the pleas of the BMX community with a recently installed dirt pump track located at Nakusp Elementary School. However, explicit restrictions required the design of the track to keep both bike wheels on the ground at all times thereby limiting the list of allowable features. It is a novice track, intended to serve the riders attending the elementary school and offers no thrills or challenges for the older youth in the community. The group seamlessly switched gears from downhill to park riding, and decided that the focus would be on making

a dirt jump park a reality for Nakusp. Lott identified that “land access is the first thing” and explained that the process needs to engender the youth if the proposal is going to be viable and sustainable. With the vision identified and decided on, plans were made to continue the discussion with an onsite visit to the skate park on Thursday June 12. All citizens (not just the community youth) who are interested in making this project a physical actuality are encouraged to attend the onsite viewing to discuss design, layout and potential for a dirt bike jump and pump track. “If this is something that the community wants” Lott commented, “then the community will make it happen.” A project of the Kootenay Co-op
“As soon as Nelson Commons came up for sale, we put our names down for a unit. A lot of it has to do with the location—you can do your shopping, and so much more, without having to get in the car and drive.” Talking with John and Marlene Lerbscher, it seems that most people are buying into Nelson Commons for the same reasons. John and Marlene have been Kootenay residents for decades, but they’ve also spent chunks of time in big cities where they’ve learned to appreciate the virtues of all that downtown living offers. John’s an avid skier and a passholder at Whitewater Resort. He also heads off on a couple trips to other ski areas every winter. Marlene added: “When John’s away, he can feel more at peace knowing that I can just go downstairs to the Co-op to get whatever I need.” John is a chemist and he’s taken a “scientific” approach and documented all the environmental and economic benefits of living at the Commons. He points out that high-density living significantly reduces one’s carbon footprint and that their monthly cost will be significantly lower than what they are paying now for their house, which is outside of Nelson. As they both get a little older, the prospect of almost maintenance-free living is a big deal for John and Marlene as well. Not having to shovel out a driveway after a storm (and just 22 minutes from Whitewater!), the ability to “lock and leave” when they go on vacation, and proximity to medical clinics, great restaurants and the movie theatre are some of the many reasons for them. John and Marlene are also big fans of Nelson and everything that will be nearby. “And it’s a four-season town—it’s not a one trick pony,” John added.
A variety of units are still available. Visit the Display Suite & Sales Office at 621 Vernon St, 12:00 to 5:00, Wednesday to Sunday (or call to book an appointment).

to bring it home
Nakusp’s softball season is underway in Nakusp with seven teams vying to dethrone last year’s league champions, the Brew Jays. Working with Slow Pitch Society president Ryan Struck, Zac Wethal has organized seven teams into a schedule of league play that started on May 21 and continues every Monday and Wednesday night right into the July 21 playoffs. There is a short break, and then those interested teams will be primed and ready to tackle the infamous marathon of action during the long weekend softball tournament on August 28. Softball players and spec-
tators may have noticed that the backstop on the Kathy Penderson field has been upgraded thanks to the efforts of the Softball Society. Wethal noted that the backstop on the field would not have been made possible without support from local businesses and volunteers. The league would like to acknowledge Home Hardware for help with supplies, Brisco for donating the poles, Cresent Bay Construction for use of their equipment, Frank Zobel for his crane work contribution and all of the volunteers who donated their time and skills to make the construction happen.

Mary Penno passed away peacefully at Minto House in Nakusp on June 4,2014 at the age of 92. She was born in Sandilands, Manitoba to a Ukrainian family. Mary was the first born of the 14 Ewankevich children; she is survived by four sisters: Olga Andrushko (Morris), Jean Kanen, Elena Schultz (Nelson) Vera Stoesz (Bill); three brother-in-laws: Arnold Penno (Carol), Clarence Penno (Violet), Allan Penno (Grace) and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary worked hard alongside her late husband Eddie Penno and together they established a successful logging business from their home in Arrow Park. They were married while Eddie was serving in the army during World War II. Besides working in the logging industry, Mary also ran a children’s clothing store and bartended at the Leland Hotel. She was a life member of the Canadian Legion and was an active participant in their many activities. Mary was an involved member of the Nakusp community for over 60 years and will be remembered as a feisty lady who cared about the environment, her community and most of all her extended family and many friends. A memorial service was held Monday June 9, at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Aaron de Dios as Celebrant. Interment took place at Nakusp Lower Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Nakusp Royal Canadian Legion. Expressions of sympathy may be made by a donation to the Nakusp Hospice Society Box 87, Nakusp, BC V0G 1R0 On line condolences may be expressed at www.valleyfh.ca Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Valley Funeral Home Ltd.
