The results are in and Saanich residents living north of McKenzie Avenue will likely soon have the ability to legalize the illegal secondary suites in their home. Saanich’s 2014 secondary suites survey netted 796 responses, most in favour of allowing homeowners to acquire a legal permit for a secondary suite. Cameron Scott, with Saa-

nich community planning, says the strong community support means a report favouring the idea will go before council. “Ultimately it’s council’s decision to go ahead, but the survey generally supports it being the same as the south,” Scott said. In 2009, Saanich council approved a pilot project, giving homeowners an opportunity to legalize suites south of McKenzie Avenue only. Paul McKivett, president

of the Gordon Head Residents’ Association, says his group has some concerns about the possibility of legalizing suites in his area, but overall the GHRA supports it. “Suites are a reality for us. The concerns are how (Saanich) chooses to enforce the bylaws,” McKivett said. Suite enforcement continues to be complaint-based. A report is set to appear before council by late June or early July. 2013 ANNUAL REPORT The Municipal Council of the District of Saanich will consider the annual report at a Committee of the Whole meeting to be held Monday, June 23, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Council Chambers, Saanich Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Avenue. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and to present submissions or ask questions with respect to the report.

In late May more than 30 park lovers turned out to a weekend clean-up of Bowker Creek, removing invasive blackberry, broom and ivy from around the waterway. “We could almost feel the creek breathing a sigh of relief,” Haddon said. “The parks department doesn’t have the resources to clean out a lot of this – it’s very labour intensive. It’s reasonable that volunteers step up and put some time into it for the sake of the community.” In addition to periodic Saturday morning clean-ups, Society volunteers, along with Saanich’s Pulling Together Program volunteers, are out every Monday in the park removing invasive vegetation. “It’s really fun because while you’re chomping away at all the blackberry and so forth, you get to chat to people, talk about the park and talk about the community. It really creates a sense of com-

A newly established citizen group in Saanich is already making an impact in Cedar Hill Park. The Friends of Cedar Hill Park Society, which formed after Saanich council opposed a divisive plan to build a clay court tennis facility behind the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, is already holding weekly invasive species removal events to maintain the park in the short-term. “Whereas something like the clay courts will motivate a lot of people in opposition, we didn’t think we could count on people to show up when it comes to the work of maintaining the park, but we were pleasantly surprised,” said Peter Haddon, a member

It’s a funny thing; people can look at that space and say, ‘It’s unused, it’s unkept. Saanich parents are scrambling to find care for their elementary schoolaged children in the wake of the rotating teacher strikes. And with the possibility of a fullscale strike (the results of a vote by members of the BC Teachers’ Federation were released Tuesday night, after the News’ deadline), the heightened job action would only make matters worse. Shannon Donnelly, a part-time employee at Broadmead Care, says she’s blessed with a strong social circle of parents who have backup plans to help each other out. And Donnelly has the added bonus of a flexible private daycare. “We’re quite lucky because the daycare provider for our three-yearold has also been taking our eldest child (in kindergarten) for the rotating strike days, and has agreed to take him if (the BCTF) goes into a full strike,” Donnelly said. “It’s great because it opens up

spots at the local out-of-school care programs for the other kids. Parents are striving for those spots,” she added. Tracy Frolek, program manager of the Campus View Out of School Club, which provides care to students at the Gordon Head elementary school, has fielded requests from many concerned parents. “We get a lot of requests. The strike causes a huge uproar,” Frolek said. If it opens during the strike, the Out of School Club will take students on a first come, first served basis. “We already turn students away, and we won’t be able to accommodate all of our current patrons should we choose to run during strike days,” Frolek said. The program rents two portables and uses of the school’s gymnasium, which means it doesn’t have access to the gym during a strike. If there’s one thing David Black embodies, it’s organization. The owner of Black Press – which publishes this newspaper and dozens more in B.C. and North America – wasn’t about to offer some off-the-cuff remarks to graduates and officials gathered for this morning’s convocation ceremony at the University of Victoria. In accepting an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, the modest newspaperman will read from a prepared speech to offer his pearls of wisdom. As he does with any project he’s embarked upon over the years, he takes it very seriously. “It’s pretty special to be honoured from a university like this,” he said from his home office in Oak Bay. “They’ve had a lot of growth since I’ve been in Victoria.” While he admitted to being a “little bit embarrassed” to receive the honour – former Royal B.C. Museum CEO Pauline Rafferty received her honorary Doctor of Laws during convocations on Monday – he feels pride at being a part of the growth at UVic. Having based his growing newspaper group in Greater Victoria in the late 1980s, Black was among a group of leaders from the local business and academic communities who brainstormed the makeup and focus of UVic’s school of business in the mid-2000s. “I was lucky enough to be involved from the very beginning,” he said, adding that many good ideas were tossed around in the initial stages of the program’s development. Such aspects as mentorship, student entrepreneurship and international exposure to outside industry were brought forward as the educational strategy for the school took shape. “Those are still keys to the program and have been since the beginning,” he said. “It’s been fun watching (the business program), mostly from a distance.” The Black Press scholarship program, which awards $5,000 to one student in each of B.C.’s 37 school districts for enrolment into UVic’s Peter

B. Gustavson School of Business (so named in 2010), was an effort to develop young entrepreneurs throughout B.C. as a way to strengthen the province’s economy. “I’ve met a lot of these kids over the years. They’re terrific,” he says of the scholarship winners. Rafferty, who guided the museum from 2001 until retiring in 2012, called the honorary doctorate a great and “very humbling” honour. Green assets ours to protect Depending on who you ask, Saanich was recently either at risk of losing precious parkland or was on the verge of transforming unused land into an active tennis facility. Cedar Hill Park was the target of a development application that was eventually scrapped by council. The plan, from the Cedar Hill Clay Court Tennis Society, drew long lines of opponents. One of the more common themes heard from protesters who spoke to council was, “I have nothing against tennis – just not here.” This is why long-term visions for parks like Cedar Hill are so crucial. Everyone and their dog has an idea of what makes a great park, and unfortunately not everyone will get their way when all is said and done. The community is an important stakeholder in decision-making around these public assets. Parks are owned by the municipality, and therefore belong to the taxpayers. We’ve seen it at Mount Douglas Park and Tod Creek Inlet, where taxpayers – average Saanich residents and park lovers – form societies that focus on natural preservation of our shared lands. So we welcome the newly formed Friends of Cedar Hill Park, and give them huge kudos for hitting the ground running on creating both short- and long-term goals for the park. In the short-term, they are continuing on with the long-standing volunteer work of passionate people by targeting invasive species throughout the park. It will take years, if not decades, to completely take back the park from non-native vegetation, but the work that’s already underway will benefit the park for generations to come. And with an eye on the future, the society will help ensure the community gets a strong, unified voice whenever Saanich decides to create a long-term vision for Cedar Hill Park. In the meantime, taxpayers need to remember that parks are an asset owned by us. By volunteering some time to help the natural environment thrive, we’ll be doing our part to ensure our 160-plus parks remain assets we all want to use. What do you think? Meanwhile in the real world, TransCanada Corp. announced last week its subsidiary NovaGas Transmission has signed an agreement with Chevron and Apache for a gas pipeline that will connect to Pacific Trails. It’s one of four gas pipelines TransCanada has in development for what is planned to be the biggest industrial investment in B.C. history. Saanich history revealed in heritage walking tours Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Despite a lot of Saanich being rural in nature, the municipality now boasts five heritage walking tours to take residents and history buffs on a walk down memory lane. “We have such a huge number of heritage homes,” said Coun. Vicki Sanders, chair of the arts, culture and heritage committee, holding the district’s Heritage Register, a book filled with nearly 300 homes and buildings that are relevant to Saanich’s history. “It’s exciting. It’s been more of a challenge. We are a suburb. A lot of the properties are large and it’s a long walk.” Saanich recently created two new heritage walking tours to highlight landmarks of significance in the Quadra/Tattersall and Prospect Lake areas. Sanders’ own home is one of 10 on the new Quadra tour. “(The map) also points out houses that aren’t in the register, but are important to the history of the neighbourhood,” she said, standing in front of the grand Tudor revival house known as Craigmillar Lodge, or Brown Residence, at the corner of Kathleen Street and Tattersall

Claremont Spartan heads to Germany for Rugby Sevens Saanich’s Logan Martin-Feek is in Germany this week with the BC Elite Youth Sevens provincial rugby team. The select squad, which features five players from the Greater Victoria area, is set to compete in the Heidelberg Junior International Sevens, June 14 and 15, a competition featuring representation from Europe, Africa and North America. Sixteen-year-old Martin-Feek is a Grade 10 student at Claremont secondary and was recently named a city all-star with the Claremont Spartans junior rugby team. He has grown up as a member of the Velox Rugby Club. The players will visit the renowned Heidelberg Castle. Four Castaway Wanderers are also on the team: Brennig Prevost, Brandon Schellenberger, Brayden Tate and Jonah Hall.

Cordova Bay’s Woodland wins national golf title

Saanich golfer Megan Woodland has ended her fiveyear term as a UVic Vike with a bang. The Saanich resident and accomplished Cordova Bay Golf Course member/employee won the Canadian University/College Championship in Manitoba on Friday (June 6). Woodland shot twoover 74 on the final day of the four-round tournament for the top score, an eight-over par, 296, one stroke ahead of secondplace Kylie Barros (UBC Thunderbirds). “It feels amazing and to be honest it’s kind of been my goal since about my second year to come here and to finally win one,” Woodland said. “I’ve come really close the last few years and to pull it off it feels great.” Oak Bay’s Connor Gann led the Vikes men, posting a strong second-place finish. A handful of records fell at the 2014 Greater Victoria middle school track and field championships last week (June 4) at the University of Victoria. Gordon Head middle school was at the forefront, as students set a new record in the Grade 6 boys 4x100metre relay for the second consecutive year. Gordon Head’s Noah Thompson, Alex Jones, Kevin Song and anchor Kadin Martin ran the 4x100-metre in 57.51 seconds, breaking the 57.94 set last year by Gordon Head’s Sean Ramsey, Kalub Laforet, Martin Williams and Luke de Greef. The latter team – still racing together this year – looked to have the Grade 7 boys 4x100m relay race all sewn up, but a missed pass with the baton cost them. They had run a strong qualifier of 54 seconds, which would have earned them a new city record for Grade 7. Another Gordon Head middle school record fell when Finn Battersby of North Saanich middle school set a Grade 8 record in the 2,000 metre, 6:38.4, two seconds better than Joel Taylor’s 2011 time of 6:40.4. Avid homebrewer Tim Travis can’t sell his beers, but he sure can sell his sweet, tasty beer jellies. When Travis became aware of jelly-producing pectin back in 2013 he was immediately ready to boil his brews down and give it a go. That’s no small feat, as he is flirting with master territory as a brewer, producing high-quality craft style flavours from scratch in his Gordon Head home. “I can always brew more beer. So I boiled down a few litres,” said the veteran cook, who’s spent years working at downtown hotels. What he came up with is Jellied Ales, a jam-like product sold by the jar. It comes in typical craft beer flavours such as Cascadia India Pale Ale, a Belgian-style witbier, and a stout. “They’re great as a spread on toast or bagels, with meat and cheese platters, for flavouring meat before grilling, and also go great in a grilled cheese sandwich.” Travis is selling Jellied Ales as one of many artisan vendors at the Oaklands Sunset Markets, a summer event running Wednesday nights until Sept. 17 at 1-2827 Belmont Ave. in Victoria. Of course he had to get the jams third-party tested for alcohol to prove they’re below the commercial limit of .5 per cent alcohol, which they are. “I wasn’t sure how the jellies would be received but ... the only time I’ve sold it at a market, it was a small Christmas bazaar and it sold well. Almost everyone who tasted it bought it.” Needless to say, the jellies make great gifts. They’re also less sweet than most jellies, with about half the sugar content. 85-year-old photographer Grant shows no signs of slowing down Don Denton News staff

Most people, on reaching their 85th birthday, have been long enjoying retirement and a quieter life. Saanich resident and photojournalist Ted Grant, who celebrated his birthday on May 27, spent the week after his 85th taking photos for a University of Victoria publication that celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the medical program at the University of Victoria. Grant, one of Canada’s most celebrated photojournalists, shows no signs of slowing down as he ages. In April he was in New York for the opening of his one-man photo exhibition at the Leica Gallery on Broadway. Grant says the New York show was a highlight of his career.

Friends and fans from around the world jammed the gallery for the opening and for the chance to see the photographer with 75 of his best-known images. Unable to hail a cab outside his hotel, he found himself arriving 45 minutes late to his own opening, which led to some good-natured teasing that he was now such a big star he was turning up to events fashionably late. The weekend before his birthday he was in Vancouver for the annual News Photographers Association of Canada convention, where he was honoured with a video tribute. The NPAC tribute, in front of an audience of his peers from across Canada, was an emotional event that moved him to tears, he says. He is currently contemplating a large retrospective book

on his career, a followup to last year’s Ted Grant: Sixty Years of Legendary Photojournalism by Thelma Fayle. The challenge of this book will be going through the hundreds of thousands his negatives held by the National Gallery in Ottawa, including the 100,000 shot while on assignment for the National Film Board.
