Lantzville Coun. Andrew Mostad shows off farm-fresh eggs sold along Lantzville Road. Mostad sees the potential for programs that promote urban agriculture, including a map of where people can find fresh eggs, after the district made it legal for residential landowners to sell what they grow.
Bylaw allows cultivation of home-based food sales By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Allowing residential landowners to sell what they grow is the first step toward cultivating a culture of urban farming, according to Lantzville Coun. Andrew Mostad. The District of Lantzville adopted zoning bylaw changes that make market gardening and farm-gate sales a legitimate home-
based business. The move comes three years after the municipality went headto-head with Compassion Farm over a commercial food operation, which was not previously permitted on residential lots. Residents will now be allowed to profit from crops like fruits, vegetables, trees and flowers under restrictions that include buffer zones, noise-scaring devices and
artificial lighting. The change is being called progressive by Lantzville Farmer’s Market manager Josh Fuller, who says that it never made sense to him that you couldn’t set aside a portion of your property to make money off like you could on agricultural land. But Marjorie Stewart, spokeswoman for Friends of Urban Agriculture Lantzville Society, believes the
bylaw still leaves huge barriers in front of urban farmers, including the need to create buffers and fencing. She calls the whole process a “mammoth waste of time.” Mostad agrees the bylaw isn’t perfect, but he sees it as the first step in an effort to create resiliency to encourage and enhance urban agriculture in Lantzville. Class will be in this fall for students enrolled in Nanaimo’s new aboriginal-focused public school. Vancouver Island West School District will be opening registration for a new one-classroom public school making its debut on Fifth Street in Nanaimo this September. The primary school is considered the first of its kind in B.C. and a potential solution to improve Nanaimo’s aboriginal graduation rates. It was proposed by the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre last year, and will include partnerships with the Mid Island Métis Nation and the Boys and Girls Club of Central Vancouver Island, which will host the school in its building. Chris Beaton, executive director of the aboriginal centre, said the new Nanaimo Learning Centre will not only give children outdoor and culture-based education, but also “wraparound” services. The programs, all offered under the same roof, will include childcare, early literacy programs and family support workers. The school was previously anticipated to have multiple classrooms for 160 students in kindergarten to Grade 3, but the partners opted to start small at 20 spaces and one room. “That’s one of the challenges of our traditional school model is that we put children into grades based on their age, not their ability and so a multi-grade classroom allows for flexibility,” Beaton said. “They could be doing Grade 2 level math but Grade 3 level English all in the same classroom.” See ‘STUDENTS’ /4

It will take some fear away from those concerned about going up against the zoning bylaw after what they saw with Compassion Farm and as a living document, it has the potential to be tweaked in the future as people’s perceptions about urban agriculture change, he said, adding some still see the practice as a nuisance. “Right now I think it’s as good as we are going to get,” Mostad said. “The first bit is done and that’s a huge relief. Thinking about the next steps is very exciting.” Mostad said he’d like to see the district roll out agricultural programs, like an egg walk map that

She said the government will closely examine the workforce that projects demand and wants to see course offerings align with that. “There isn’t a day or meeting that goes by where companies, people who are looking to invest in B.C., are not talking about a skilled workforce,” she said.
Police hope to speak with anyone who might have witnessed a crash between a motorcycle and an SUV on the weekend that has left a motorcyclist fighting for his life in Vancouver General Hospital. The accident happened at about 7 p.m. Saturday when a Ducati motorcycle, driven southbound on Bowen Road by a 32-yearold Nanaimo man, hit a Ford Edge, driven by a 28-year-old woman from Qualicum Beach, which was pulling out of Bowen Centre at 1925 Bowen Rd. B.C.’s minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training says the government is helping to curb post-secondary student debt by devoting money to indemand jobs. Shirley Bond was in Nanaimo Friday to tour trades facilities at Vancouver Island University and discuss skills training. She said the B.C. Liberal government invests $7.5 billion a year in training and education and part of it is targeted at in-demand professions. The aim is to see 25 per cent of provincial operating grants going to public post-secondary institutions for the high-demand jobs by 2017-18, according to the government’s jobs blueprint report. Bond said some of the money and support that is provided through student loans and bursaries will be targeted to the occupations. “The most significant part of debt, when it comes to students in British Columbia, is usually the living, the accommodations, the tools, all of those kinds of things. So we are looking at ways to support students, but again, we’re going to align some of that funding for students to those in-demand jobs. “We also know that students are also going to have to look at where they’re

Liberals’ 2013 election platform, which should bode well for trades students at the university. “When you look at heavy-duty mechanics, welders, carpentry, we need all of those in large numbers over

Students register with west Island district From /1

Families interested in signing children up at the school will have to register with the Vancouver Island West School District, which covers Zeballos, Tahsis, Kyuquot and Gold River, rather than with Nanaimo. The partners reportedly approached the Nanaimo school district, which “felt it wasn’t something they could get fully behind at this time,” said Ian Kalina, executive director of Boys and Girls Club Central Vancouver Island, who added that the group then looked outside the box for ways to make the new school happen. A Nanaimo school district spokesperson denies getting a public school proposal from the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre. Lawrence Tarasoff, superintendent for Vancouver Island West School

District, said his organization came on board because it saw a chance to improve education for aboriginal students. Nanaimo is also a good fit, with the district’s children and teachers
going to Vancouver Island University. Future staff members could work in a “really strong aboriginal-ways-of-learning centre and then can bring those learnings and understandings back into our district and hopefully make a difference in learning for all of our students,” he said. Tarasoff also points out his district struggles with aboriginal results and wants to find ways to have its students be more successful. That means changing the education system because what is being done not is not meeting the needs of students, he said. “I think it’s one of those things that’s such a good learning environment and such a great kind of place to observe and try to do research that I think lots of school districts will be involved in it,” he said.

Report checks up on community By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN
Nanaimo is getting a checkup as part of a new project that tests the health of the city. The Nanaimo Foundation, the City of Nanaimo and the United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island have banded together to launch Vital Signs, a new initiative that will check the pulse of the community’s quality of life and how people view their city. According to those involved, community agencies have collected their own statistics on different sectors like health and security and this report will pull it all together. The aim is to create an overall outlook on trends in the Harbour
City that not only highlights what’s being done right, but key issues that might need solutions and investment. Nanaimo is following suit of 26 other communities that did a Vital Signs report last year. “The reason so many communities across Canada have picked up Vital Signs and gone with it is it’s a chance for all of us ... to gather our data together and do a report card that gives the community a bigger-view picture of what’s happening around the community,” said Signy Madden, executive director for United Way. “I think it can identify issues or trends we weren’t seeing because we were maybe looking at one data set or one organization’s take on an issue. [Now] we are collaborating and bringing our information into one place.” Researchers hired to do the $25,000 report card have already started to collect
information. Madden says once done, the report will not only be a tool to lobby for more funding from provincial or federal government and determine how best to invest, but will also educate the public about the key issues in the community and how it can help. Tim Mawdsley, director with the Nanaimo Foundation, said his organization is looking to engage the community and is excited to take the next steps. “Many organizations in the community will be able to make use of this for decisionmaking ... just as the foundation and the United Way and the city are looking forward to using it,” he said. A public survey will be available in two weeks at www. nanaimofoundation.com for people to grade the health of their community. The report is scheduled to be released Oct. 7. news@nanaimobulletin.com

How to shop for hearing aids And get the right ones at the right price! FREE INFORMATION SESSION JUNE 10 Shopping for hearing aids can be a complicated process. If you’re just starting your research, you likely have more questions than answers: • What features are important for your type and degree of hearing loss? • Why are hearing aids so expensive? • What’s the difference between the various brands? • How are the various styles different? • How long do they last? • How do hearing aid warranties really work? • Why are there so many hearing clinics these days? Hanan Merrill, • How can I avoid common problems and be Nanaimo Hearing successful in hearing better? Clinic If you haven’t noticed already, you will soon: there are a dizzying number of choices when it comes to hearing aids – everything from which brand to choose to which features you actually need (like Bluetooth compatibility, noise reduction and directional microphones, to name just a few). I know that when I’m making a major purchase decision I try to educate myself as much as possible before confronting a salesperson. Eventually, though, I get information overload. It’s then that I wish I could simply get the straight truth from a trusted expert. But who can you trust? Aren’t hearing care providers just going to try to convince you that their hearing aids are best? That’s precisely why I’m offering this hearing aid information session. I want to give you the inside information that will help you make an informed decision without any pressure to make quick decisions. Now, you’re probably thinking, “Sure, Hanan, a clever sales pitch disguised as an ‘information session.’” Truth be told, I’d love it if I could improve your quality of life by helping you hear better. After all, it’s how I make my living. But I also know that my business – and the success of my patients – is built on long, trusting relationships. It’s those relationships and successful outcomes that are my true rewards. Here’s what we’ll cover in the info session: • A quick overview of how hearing works • What to expect from a full hearing exam • How to choose your service provider • An overview of styles, brands, features and prices (and why hearing aids seem so expensive) • How to get the best deal and be successful with it • Why hearing aids are only part of the solution. This is the most important part of the information session! • Answers to YOUR questions The session will be followed by a question-and-answer period, and light refreshments will be served. Volunteers needed to help at B.C. Summer Games
I
FOUR-DAY EvENt in July will bring thousands of athletes to Nanaimo. By GreG Sakaki The News BulleTiN
B.C. Summer Games volunteers don’t get the medals and the glory, but they’ll be behind-the-scenes champions. The Games committee continues to seek volunteers leading up to the July 17-20 event in Nanaimo. Hundreds of helpers are still needed for an array of tasks leading up to and during the week of the Games. “The athletes and the coaches and the families who come to Nanaimo to the Summer Games, we want them to leave here going, ‘Wow, Nanaimo did a great job of putting on those games and they really made us feel welcome. What a great place Nanaimo is,’” said Bruce Hunter, vice-president of the Games. So the volunteers are ambassadors, too, and they also get to share in all the victories and positivity that week. “I think it would bring people great satisfaction to see all these young people from across the
province competing hard, enjoying themselves, making friends, having a great experience and to know that you were part of what enabled them to have that great experience,” Hunter said. One area where the Games committee particularly needs volunteers is in accommodations. The ‘A-team’ will make sure athletes have a safe place to stay 24 hours a day during the games. Dormitory hosts, dorm guides and hospitality guides are needed, as well as people to handle setup, housekeeping and teardown at the dorms. Time commitments are flexible, with shifts generally six hours long. “Being part of it, even if it’s a small part, you’re making it happen,” said Pam Donnelly, accommodations director, in a press release. Volunteers are also needed to handle security, including crowd control, a mobile patrol, and security communications centre operations. For information about volunteering and to download application forms, please visit www.bcgames. org. Forms can also be picked up at City of Nanaimo recreation centres or at the Games office at 1111 Dufferin Cres. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Pickard spends sale proceeds on better woodworking equipment. “It’s just magic because you know it will always be there,” Pickard said. “For me it’s just to know that people get some happiness … So I enjoy doing this.” Learn more about gnome folklore and Pickard’s gnome homes, please visit his website at www.charliesbirdhouses.com.
Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters has launched in Nanaimo and will assist immigrant mothers to prepare children for kindergarten. Thanks to a grant from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, children between three and five years will have the opportunity to develop literacy and cognitive skills with the help of mothers through the national program. Initially, the funding will allow 25 immigrant families to take part in the program, dubbed HIPPY. The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre are teaming up to find other funding sources for the program. It consists of a 30-week curriculum and mothers are assisted by experienced mothers who pay regular visits to their homes, delivering books and activities geared toward the child’s needs. It’s especially valuable for mothers with issues of language and culture, according to Hilde Schlosar, multicultural society executive director. She said the curriculum consists of something different each week. “It’s reading stories and discussing the stories ... creative play, constructive play with shapes and colouring and sitting down and spending that time with the process of not just playing with your child but helping their child learn and develop in that time of play,” Schlosar said. Helen Liu and daughter Lucy Huang will be participating in the program with home visitor Helena Tian. “I have been here for seven months now and I have a daughter of four years and I feel a little isolated and we are also not good at English and that’s why we want to join this program, to help my child be ready for [school],” Liu said through Tian. It is hoped that $40,000 can be raised by September and the program can be expanded to include 10 urban aboriginal families and one aboriginal home visitor. According to Chris Beaton, aboriginal centre executive director, the program will assist his organization’s vision to see 100 per cent graduation rate among aboriginal students. “Ten per cent of our population is under the age of four and we have a graduation rate of about 56 per cent in the [Nanaimo] school district,” Beaton said. “There’s a great need to better prepare our young people for school to connect them with existing programs and services and HIPPY does that in spades.” The Nanaimo program is the first of its kind on Vancouver Island and the hope is that by 2016, funding can be secured so that other low-income families can be included.

t’s extremely rare to catch sight of a gnome, but getting a glimpse of their domiciles is getting easier these days. And apparently Nanaimo’s gnomes contract out construction to Charlie Pickard, a retired engineering project manager who worked overseas, including Czechoslovakia, where he lived with his family from 1979 to 1982 and was first introduced to gnome lore by a local man who thought Pickard’s young children might enjoy them. The friend presented Pickard with a book detailing the 1,000-year history of gnomes in Europe. Then the men created a little gnome home out of twigs, moss and pebbles in the woods. “Come the weekend – he had two kids, I had two kids – we took them there,” Pickard said. “We told them, ‘Guess what? The stories you’ve been reading? Well, now we’ll go find a gnome home, eh.’” The men spun the tale leading the children to the gnome home, making sure they kept a safe distance to avoid disturbing the gnomes sleeping inside. Gnomes are nocturnal. “Well, to this day, I still couldn’t believe my daughter’s eyes,” Pickard said. “She couldn’t say a word.” Pickard, now 71, needed a hobby and it happens, according to his version of gnome history, that 15 male gnomes from a clan in England’s Black Country, arrived in Nanaimo in 1854 as stowaways aboard the Princess Royal. They formed a colony in what is now Morrell Nature Sanctuary, but only in the last couple of years have their homes become visible. A new colony has started in Neck Point Park and word has it gnomes have colonized Cathedral Grove Park, although no official sightings have been reported. Pickard builds and installs gnome doors with wood from mill operator Mike Gogo and blessings from the naturesanctuary and the city.

Gnome colonies have been springing up in the park and Morrell Nature Sanctuary with help from Pickard who the gnomes have “contracted” to build the entrances to their dwellings in the woods.
Pickard said he gets plenty of positive feedback from people who spot gnome doors in the parks and who often leave offerings at the doors, such as coins, shells, little action figures, buttons and even glitter sprinkled on the ground around the entrances. Some gnome doors even get decorated for Christmas. Since people can buy gnome doors from Pickard, more gnome colonies are spreading in private
City announces additional 2.4-hectare parcel added to recent linley Valley park purchase Linley Valley Park just got a little larger. The City of Nanaimo announced it plans to grow Linley Valley park by another 2.4 hectares as part of a new option agreement.
The municipality already agreed to spend $7.6 million to acquire and develop 89 hectares of green space in Linley Valley West, creating what would be Nanaimo’s largest urban park.
Now it’s entered into an agreement with the owner of 3650 Cottleview Dr. that will see the city get another 2.4 hectares for a dollar before the end of the year in exchange for facilitating two
600 square-metre lots on the same street. The survey and development cost charge fees associated with the lots would cost the city $40,000. “This additional parcel of
land was identified in our initial acquisition program and we are pleased to announce it publicly as part of the wider package,” said Mayor John Ruttan. news@nanaimobulletin.com

No easy solution in education spat Amid the rhetoric, acrimony, and accusations, the dispute between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government comes down to one thing: money. The two sides may choose a more colourful palette: politicians will argue it’s all about responsible stewardship of the economy; teachers will say it’s about quality of education. But still, it all comes down to money. Or more to the point, taxes. Currently, $4.7 billion of your tax dollars is spent on the education system annually. The government says that should be enough. In fact, it argues it’s 27 per cent more than what was spent in 2001. The BCTF says it’s not. Citing stats that suggest B.C.’s per student funding is among the lowest in Canada, it says more must be done. While taxpayers may disagree on who’s to blame for the latest impasse, there is one thing they can agree on: the system is broken. Only twice in the past two decades has a collective agreement been agreed upon by all the parties involved. During that time, public education enrolment has dropped, while the population at independent schools has grown. To suggest that labour unrest is the reason for this migration would be an oversimplification. And yet, every time there’s a labour disruption, enrolment climbs at private schools. Clearly there are people who are willing to spend more to educate their children. The BCTF argues the average taxpayer should do the same. That means one thing: higher taxes. During the last provincial election neither the NDP nor the B.C. Liberals showed any appetite to raise the kind of money needed to meet the spending expectations of the teachers. Doing so now seems even less likely, meaning an arbitrated settlement that only perpetuates the distrust and animosity until the next round begins again. If that sounds pessimistic, it’s not. Given the history, it’s simply realistic. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Parents should protest education cuts To the Editor,
I was pleased to hear that B.C. parents are considering a protest regarding the current political situation between the government and B.C. teachers. My youngest child will graduate this year. A victim of Christy Clark’s vendetta against education in B.C., he has only known large class sizes, underfunded classrooms, with no texts or outdated worn ones. My advocacy as a parent could be over. Yours should not. I have suggested for years that if parents were to protest cuts to education by keeping their children out of school for one week, and teachers were to go to school and face empty classrooms, the embarrassment to the government would be overwhelming. Teachers have accepted zero per
cent time and again, have paid their own funds to supplement education materials that are not provided, have paid their own funds to access professional development. We have walked picket lines and clearly that has not gotten the attention of Ms. Clark and her government. It is time, perhaps past time, that parents clearly made their voices heard.
they have done in the past to the hospital employees union or the the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. They ordered these other groups back to work and mandated contracts to them, including cutting nurses’ pay as a punishment for believing in a fair bargaining system. Ms. Clark’s problem is that the teachers are sticking up for themselves and are tired of the education system being gutted by the government for so long now. We had enough of being bullied and were set for change, till the Liberal scare strategy worked and Clark brought us to where we are today. I think there should be a provincewide work stoppage to show our thanks to teachers.

Re: Beefs & Bouquets, May 22. You’ve published abusive beefs by that bully for months; I’m sick of it. When you provide a public platform for a bully, you engage in bullying. The neighbour’s unemployment doesn’t hurt that beefer. The only thing that beefer gains from having their beefs published is the joy of being mean to someone. We don’t know why the unemployed neighbour is unemployed. He or she could be struggling with addiction, depression or other mental health issues. Re: Council puts priority on cycling, transit, May 29. The rationale that Nanaimo City council must do the green thing by eliminating cars for bikes, buses or walking is not a fit for the entire population. Nanaimo strived for senior facilities creating employment and bringing the average age of the citizenry up to where they aren’t about to walk or cycle. There are still subdivisions buses don’t serve, and walking to distant bus stops is too far for those with medical conditions. I can’t believe council would spend millions of taxpayers’ dollars on bike infrastructure when most of the traffic is through traffic from the ferries and Victoria and north island. Ditch the green, we are into the next phase of no-driver small cars, and they will roll right over you.

Re: Plan steers city in right direction, Editorial, May 29. The transportation plan establishes a list of priorities that will benefit the economy, the environment and the well-being of every citizen. The plan is to put pedestrians first, cyclists second, bus riders third, truck drivers fourth, and car drivers last. This means wider, safer, more comfortable sidewalks; a network of pathways for bikes; a more useful and efficient bus system; fewer and safer truck routes; and less roadway dedicated to cars. The plan represents a radical shift in the way we use roads. It will also requires a radical shift in the way we develop land. The plan doesn’t call for this, but it implies our need to completely overhaul our land use document, the Official Community Plan. Our new priorities would direct us to

t was a dozen years ago when playwright Frank Moher found himself with a musical that had no music. “I was commissioned to write this [production] by a performing arts school in Alberta and I did so. I wrote the book and lyrics,” Moher said. “They had separately commissioned someone to write the music but for various reasons that never happened and so I ended up with book and lyrics and no music.” However that didn’t faze Moher and after years of hard work he has churned out his latest production, titled Moonbound. Moonbound is about an eccentric scientist along with a hard-nosed London businesses woman and her imperialistic assistant who travel to the moon and discover more than just one civilization inhabiting the natural satellite. The musical marries elements of
science-fiction and romance into a nearly two-hour long performance. “There they find an unusual civilization living on the surface and then an amazing civilization underground,” Moher explained about the musical. “It’s a combination adventure story, love story and it has a bit of an underline the folly of imperialism, of thinking it is a good idea to go to other places and take them over.” Moonbound made its world premiere on Gabriola Island last month and will be in Nanaimo for four performances at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre on June 6, 7 and 8. Although the musical made its world premiere last month, the production was once performed in 2011 for a script-in-hand fundraiser for Western Edge. “It is supposed to be a show that combines the fun and thrill of sci-fi with the fun and the thrill of musicals,” Moher said. The musical stars Antonio

According to Moher, who is also a journalism professor at Vancouver Island University, Moonbound is loosely based on the H.G. Wells 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon. “That I thought would make a basis for a good musical up to a point,” Moher said. “I have messed around with the book quite a bit in order to make it work as a musical. In the second half in particular I have changed things up to make it

more colourful and comic and probably in ways that has Mr. Wells spinning in his grave.” The Alberta native had tinkered with idea of creating a sci-fi themed musical long before the creation of Moonbound. Moher originally planned on writing a sci-fi musical based on the 1953 film Invaders from Mars, which starred Leif Erickson, but discovered that the film wouldn’t make for a good musical. “I had wanted to a musical based on the old ’50s movie Invaders from Mars. I thought that would be amusing in a Little Shop of Horrors kind of way, but when I finally went back to watch Invaders from Mars I realized that it wasn’t that good and it wouldn’t make a very good musical,” Moher explained. “So, I started looking around for other sci-fi possibilities and that’s when I came across Wells’ novel.” Moher believes that Moonbound has the commercial potential to eventually tour on a much larger scale.

“The difficulty is that it’s a large show and it would be very very expensive for an equity theatre,” he said. “So, what market would work well maybe the university and high school market and community theatre market until the Disney corporation discovers it.” Moher is hoping that the success of Moonbound will spark others within the local and provincial theatre community to create their own original works. “I think the next step for us as a theatre community is for us to be doing more original work and I hope Moonbound will encourage other theatre types and other companies to start dipping their toes into those waters,” Moher said. Moonbound runs on June 6 at 7:30 p.m., June 7 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and June 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre. CHOIR PERFORMING popular cover tunes at st. Andrew’s. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
A unqiue concert that combines indie-rock with classical music is set to take place this weekend. On Friday (June 6) the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir (CSYC) will be
performing a variety of a variety of popular cover songs at St. Andrew’s Church. The event, which is called Indiekör, features singers between the ages of 15-23 covering songs from a wide range of bands including the Rolling Stones and Hey Ocean. “We do covers of our favourite indie-rock bands,” said CSYC conductor Carrie Tennant. This is the second year in a row that CSYC has performed
in Nanaimo, and Tennant said the trip over from Coquitlam is a good bonding experience for the kids. “We are all bringing sleeping bags and crashing on the floor of St. Andrew’s after this,” Tennant said. “It’s a good bonding experience.” The Coastal Sound Youth Choir perform at St. Andrew’s Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St., on Friday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6.50 for students. For more information, visit bit.ly/csycnanaimo.

Whether it’s a truly helpful encounter in a retail shop, a ‘human’ conversation with somebody on the phone, or somebody whose free advice helps solve a problem – good customer service comes in many forms, just not often enough for most of us. The good experiences really stand out because they are, unfortunately, becoming more and more rare. Recently I had two great customer service experiences – both on the same day. Off to replace the family barbecue after five years of decent service, I decided to seek out the famous ‘Big Green Egg.’ With only one local retailer, I felt a little cornered if I was going to make a decision to go with the product. But the business owner started to talk about his experience with the product and his pride and joy was contagious. This friendly enthusiasm and spirited personal approach made all the difference in the world and I ended up with an Egg. I also noticed he acted just about the same with everyone who walked in whether they were after barbecues, hot tubs, accessories or just information on a product they’d already purchased. Personable, committed to
customers, and genuine. A real find. I needed to drop into the specialty lighting store next to the Big Green Egg outlet. A floor lamp purchased about a year previous had become wobbly. Rather than attempt to fix it myself and likely break it, I asked if I could pay them to do it right. “How about a brand new one in a box?” was the friendly rep’s reply. I put the box in my car and was about to drive away when she came running out the door waving light bulbs in the air. “You don’t want to have to buy these again – I took them from your broken lamp.” Wow. Unfortunately, not every day brings such refreshing customer service experiences. But they could and should. We’ll help you with that on June 24 at Lightning Talks 2. Speakers David Hatchman, Braeden Wheatcroft, Nick West and Dan Burnett all offer their take on improving your relationship with customers and providing service that people will tell their friends about – like I am now. For tickets, please visit the chamber website at www. nanaimochamber.bc.ca, or find Lightning Talks on Facebook.

Company targets recycling

StEward choIcE sets sights on multifamily housing in B.C. By Jeff Nagel BLACk PRESS
A newly formed packaging and paper stewardship group says it will seek provincial approval so retailers and other firms now required to recycle their waste can have an alternative to paying into Multi-Material BC (MMBC). The new proposal comes from StewardChoice Enterprises, which is a subsidiary of Torontobased Reclay StewardEdge, a consulting firm on sustainability issues that previously managed package recycle schemes in Ontario and Manitoba. Development director Neil Hastie said the system would target roughly the 20 per cent of multifamily homes – mainly in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island – that aren’t yet directly covered under MMBC’s system. “That’s a gap in coverage of the current program that we would propose to fill,” Hastie said. “We would be offering producers a choice.” MMBC launched May 19 to meet the provincial mandate that firms that distribute packaging waste pay the costs of recycling it, but it has faced a backlash over high fees and lack

of accountability from many companies, including gardening retailers and the newspaper industry. Asked if the system would directly compete with MMBC, Hastie instead called it a “complementary initiative” that would work in parallel with the newly launched but controversial packaging stewardship system. Existing waste haulers who already collect recyclables from multi-family buildings would continue to do so and take the materials to processors. Money paid by packaging generators to discharge their responsibility under B.C.’s recycling regulation would largely go to those haulers. But it’s unclear how StewardChoice’s niche offering could meet the province’s target of 75 per cent recycling of packaging and paper waste for prospective members without them also being part of MMBC’s system. Hastie said more details will be released with a formal stewardship plan in mid-June. Kelvin McCulloch, CEO of Buckerfield’s farm supply stores and a leading opponent of MMBC, said it’s not yet clear to him if StewardChoice offers a true alternative. “Is it really competition or is it optics?” he asked. Hastie said the aim is to send the program to public and stakeholder consultation this summer. jnagel@blackpress.ca

Hired Guns Creative’s goal is to shake up the packaging industry from Nanaimo, attract the attention of clients in places like New York and Los Angeles and

beloved husband, father, and papa, Denis Alvan Buck, who died May 18, 2014. Denis was born in Nanaimo on August 20, 1935 and raised on Buck Road in East Wellington. Many people will remember him from working at the Bank of Montreal and later First Memorial Funeral Services. A proud Nanaimoite, he was very knowledgeable about the history and people of Nanaimo. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life: Spring, Summer, tending his vegetable and flower garden, dogs, hockey, good food, a glass of wine, and above all spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Sadie, and his sister Lilian (Bill McGhee). He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn, sons Garth (Loyola) and Jeff (Veronica), daughter Colleen (Mark), brothers-in-law Lorne, Jr. (Ev) and Gerry (Colleen), niece Maureen (Gordon), grandchildren Tyler, Hahlay, Tyus, Lleyton, and Sessaly, great nieces Sarah and Laura, as well as other family members and his dog Coco. Loved by many, liked by all who met him, and blessed with a wonderful sense of humour, Denis was honest, decent, kind, and hard-working. He will be dearly missed. Thank you to Dr. Kulla, Carolyn (RN), Sadie (ICU), as well as special friends Ed Bussian and Doug Brouwer (Diane). In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the B.C. Children’s Hospital and/or the SEVA Foundation for the visually impaired or Literacy Nanaimo. A celebration of Denis’ life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services on Bowen Road, Saturday, June 7, 2014, at 11 A.M. Reception to follow.

Racers rock at motocross nationals I
MIKE ALESSI wins main event at Wastelands.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Motocross racers and their fans got their thrills high in the hills above Nanaimo. The Rockstar Energy Motocross Nationals were held Saturday and Sunday at the Wastelands Motocross Park up Doumont hill. Nanaimo was the first stop on the Canadian Motosport Racing Corp. series and riders served notice that this season is going to be fast and competitive. Mike Alessi was the weekend’s big winner, placing first overall in the MX1 main event. His day started inauspiciously as he tipped his bike on the first lap of the first heat, but he quickly picked his way back through the field and finished third. A first-place finish in the second heat secured the win. Colton Facciotti won the first heat and came third in the second to place second overall and Josh Hill, Teddy Maier and Bobby Kiniry rounded out the top five in the MX1 class. Kaven Benoit finished first in MX2, winning both his motos. Shawn Maffenbeier was second and Austin Politelli placed third.

Premier Pirates fall into slump as bats go silent The Nanaimo Pirates couldn’t seem to get into any kind of rhythm on the weekend. The Hub City Paving Pirates lost four straight in B.C. Premier Baseball League play, losing 3-2 and 3-0 to the Whalley Chiefs on Saturday on the mainland and then losing 4-1 and 6-0 versus the Vancouver Cannons the next day at Serauxmen Stadium. “Until we can put a complete game together, we’re going to struggle…” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “We have to play a team game and everybody contribute and be solid all around
T-men lose momentum, lose game
the field.” The manager said going through tough times is part of the learning experience for young players. “They have to be put in those situations and fail and then learn how to compete and overcome,” Rogers said. The Pirates nearly won the first game of the weekend, as they led 2-0 going into the final inning. Pirates pitcher Sam Baker threw 6 1/3 innings in defeat, striking out five. In the second half of Saturday’s doubleheader, Garrett Goodall threw six innings, allowing no earned runs. James
McDonough hit a double and Zach Diewert had a hit, a walk and two stolen bases. Sunday’s early game was noteworthy for a dugout-clearing brawl after an aggressive slide by a Cannons baserunner in the sixth inning. The Pirates’ only offence in the game was an RBI double from Cole Warken. GAME ON … The Pirates are home at Serauxmen Stadium all weekend (June 7-8), hosting the Chiefs on Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m. and the North Delta Blue Jays on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The tide turned against the Nanaimo Timbermen in a road loss on Friday night. The city’s senior A lacrosse club surrendered a lead and fell 10-6 to the Burnaby Lakers on the mainland. Nanaimo led 6-4 with 12 minutes to go, but the home team went on a run and took the two points. “When panic mode set in, guys kind of forgot what the systems were and what they were doing,” said Kaleb Toth, coach of the Timbermen. He said his team was solid defensively most of the night. Some of the problems came on offence, when guys turned the ball over due to defensive pressure or missed passes. “Overall I didn’t think we played bad, but we do need to minimize those little mistakes that we make,” Toth said. “If we can do that, that game would have been in our favour.” In lacrosse, teams sometimes try different tricks to stall the opponent’s momentum, whether it be getting sweat on the floor, adjusting equipment or exaggerating an injury. “Sometimes you need to do that kind of stuff,” the coach said. “Players should know when they have to do that. Having a young, inexperienced team, they just don’t know the proper times to.” Shots in Friday’s game were 36-34 in favour of the home team. Cayle Ratcliff had two goals and an assist for Nanaimo, Cody Bremner had a goal and two assists and Jake Emms, Macgregor Johnston and Myles Dennett were the other scorers. GAME ON … The senior A T-men have just one game next weekend as they host the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday (June 8) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Registration is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with the racing to follow immediately. The local club is also hosting a provincial series race this Saturday (June 7), with registration from 4-5 p.m. and racing to follow. Juniors lose but make things tough on opponents The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen no longer sport an unbeaten streak, but they’re maintaining a streak of competitive lacrosse games. The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League club lost 8-5 in overtime to the Coquitlam
Adanacs on Saturday in Parksville, then fell 14-12 to the Langley Thunder on Sunday in the Fraser Valley. Saturday’s OT game featured a standout performance in goal from Pete Dubenski, as his team was outshout 71-31. Cole
Kryworuchka and Mitch Parker scored two goals each and Brett Hawrys also tallied. The next day’s game involved a furious comeback attempt as the T-men trailed 7-1 after the first period and pressed the rest of the game to get back in it.
Dane Sorensen finished with a hat trick and two assists and Kryworuchka also had a hatty. Hawrys had two and two, Parker had a goal and three helpers and other Nanaimo scorers were Adam Golia, Brett Fleming and Tarrin Davies.
GAME ON … The junior A T-men visit the Victoria Shamrocks tonight (June 3) then host the Thunder on Saturday at 4 p.m. and the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Sunday at 5 p.m. Those games are both at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

An Island Top Team jiu-jitsu athlete is one of the world’s best. Dwayne Johnston made club history last week, earning bronze in his men’s master white belt super heavyweight division at the Internatonal Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation championships in Long Beach, Calif. Johnston lost his semifinal match to the eventual gold medallist by one point. “He was on the verge of completing a comeback when time ran out; his opponent even apologized after the match for stalling,” said Robert Biernacki, Island Top Team trainer, in a press release. Shane Malone reached the quarterfinals in his purple belt heavyweight division and Taylor Jones also competed well, but lost in the first round on a referee’s decision in a scoreless match.

MID-ISLAND event attracts top players.
“We have one of the best golf courses on Vancouver Island,” Lindsay-Lecuyer said. Perennial winner Christina Proteau will be a favourite in the field again this year, and Alison Murdoch, Jackie Little and Nanaimo players Kim Evans and Shirin Anjarwalla will also be in the mix. “Any time you have another oppor tunity to tee it up with women that are great players, it’s an absolute bonus and it does good things for your game,” said Evans. The major hole-inone prize this year is a 2014 Cadillac ATS courtesy Laird Wheaton.
The Nanaimo Golf Club course is pristine and ready for the region’s best female golfers to give it their best shots. The 65th Women’s Mid-Island Amateur Golf Tournament will be contested this Saturday (June 7) and Sunday. Tournament chairwoman Heather Lindsay-Lecuyer said last week that more than 90 women had registered. They’ll come for the competition, to see the new clubhouse, and the course itself is always a draw. (MJHP TZY \JJPQ^ Ć^JWX sports@nanaimobulletin.com
