Memories exchanged, friendships renewed Benalto celebrated 100 years since settlement

People travelled from far and near to tell stories, renew acquaintances and celebrate an important milestone in Benalto’s history — 100 years. Also part of the weekend’s events was the 76th anniversary of Benalto School which included a reunion, tours of the school and a program by current students at the grandstand Friday afternoon. For many the highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to visit with friends from years ago or neighbours who still live in the area. Two years in the planning, the Centennial was certainly a resounding success according to organizers and those who attended. The program by students last Friday afternoon included a trip down memory lane as they sang songs from the past seven and a half decades. Among their selections were Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Do Re Mi, Puff The Magic Dragon and I’d Like to Teach The World to Sing. Others included the Ghostbusters theme song, Hakuna Matata and I Believe. Of course there was lots of time for food to satisfy the crowd in attendance with lunches and suppers on the schedule. Saturday night’s catered dinner was sold out with 300 people attending. The official part of the weekend took place Saturday morning with dignitaries welcomed to the stage and given an opportunity to speak. Besides the dignitaries, other special guests included Brenda and Grant Cupples who last year donated the Benalto train station back to the community and Dale and Bill Speight who donated land on Railway Avenue which will become the community park where the station will stand. “The station will become a gathering place, a museum and year-round recreation centre for youths and adults alike,” said emcee Dave More. “100 years is quite an achievement for any community,” he noted. “The ebb and flow of time etches a character into people and places and Benalto has seen its share of changes over ten decades. And as much as we are gathered to celebrate the past we are every bit as excited about the future of Benalto. “The return of the train station is symbolic as it signifies a revival, a return to roots, but also a new beginning. We see evidence in that with the new homes in town, the recent opening of Carvella Café down through the woods along the old railway line. “The opening last year of a new water treatment reservoir provided by Red Deer County and other levels of government shows a faith in the future of Benalto and area. “At special gatherings like this we are grateful for the foundation our past has built for us and excited at what is yet to arise upon that foundation,” More stated. A time capsule was buried by Benalto Booster Club in 1955 and opened in 1994. Then another was buried and opened recently. A new time capsule is being prepared, said More. That will be fitted into the train station foundation to hold the next stage of the community’s history. Items from the previous capsules were displayed during the weekend. by hard work and perseverence. The Benalto Stampede, vibrant 4-H clubs, and a great volunteer base which made things happen, have contributed to the community’s rich history, he noted. A highlight of the ceremony was the historical narration of Benalto’s last 100 years provided by historian and storyteller Michael Dawe. He was accompanied by the H. J. Cody band which interspersed his comments with songs relevant to the decades he highlighted. Their first number was Danny Boy. Dawe has a special connection to Benalto, he said. His grandfather came to Central Alberta as a civil engineer and surveyor for the Central Alberta Railway. “He would have been one of the very first people to walk on what would become the townsite of Benalto.” But his commentary went back to Evarts, a community everyone was sure the railway would build through. When the railway went further north, it wasn’t long before merchants and residents moved to the railway. Just as the railway was finished World War I broke out and “the world changed very dramatically”. Out of 4,000-5,000 people in the region west of Red Deer nearly 1,000 enlisted and several hundred never came home. The war effort needed horses and there was a great need for food so agricultural service areas like Benalto thrived, Dawe said. Then in the aftermath of the war, there was hard times, drought and prices crashed. “Benalto was a place where there was plenty of spirit. They started the Stampede in 1913 and some of the best cowboys of the west competed in Benalto.” The only year the community put off holding the Stampede was 1932 during the height of the depression and drought. Dawe talked about temperance rules in place with beer of two per cent or less in terms of alcohol served. “Today we continue that tradition, we call it American beer,” he joked. 1938 saw a new school built in the community. Then the second world war started. The late 1940s and 1950s were exciting times with lots of changes. One of those was school consolidations, although Benalto was not affected. To make consolidations work, better roads were needed. Highway 11 was gravelled. Continued on Page 12

Circle - While Rick Simon delighted with one of his songs, others involved with the sixth annual Art & Soul benefit at École H. J. Cody High School Sunday joined in or listened. They included Shawn Kingston, Carmen Winter, Donny Smith, Jacqui Renwick and Kerry Heisler. The format of the concert was a musician’s circle where each took turns performing. The afternoon included a concert, art show, and silent auction to support the development of young artists in our community. Guest performers were students Cody Rumbolt and Breanna Allen. During the benefit concert, Michelle Bentley, Alex Palm and Taylor Wright, students from the three disciplines of the fine arts program, spoke glowingly about how they have grown through their participation in art, drama and music. Ask those mooring boats in cottage area to be considerate Dear Editor, The past couple of years has seen a proliferation of boats, particularly pontoon boats, moored in the lake adjacent to the cottage area. We hope that when people do this, they are remembering to consider their neighbours’ ability to also enjoy the lake in other ways. At the same time, as the lake has risen, the amount of natural beach that can be enjoyed between 40th and 34th streets has diminished considerably. The entry points into the lake are also fewer, partly because of the rise in lake level and partly because in many cases the province has chosen to fill the spots used to access the lake with large sharp rocks (a whole other issue). We would like to ask that people consider their neighbours’ ability to enjoy the lake when mooring their boats. Some of our friends and neighbours have been quite considerate and chosen

Across the Dominion, voters will go to the polls on Monday, June 11, to elect their representatives in the next federal government. The number of candidates running totals 938 — of which 284 seek the 66 seats allotted to the province of Quebec. In Alberta 81

However others have been less considerate of their neighbours and selected spots that are in the few beach and swimming areas that we have left. Some of these boats are anchored to large concrete blocks half buried in the sand that we have cut our feet on more than once. Some are obstacles directly in the way of entry points and access to deeper water for smaller, un-motorized craft such as kayaks, paddleboards, and sailing dinghies, and pose a hazard as they must be manoeuvered around. Some are in areas where people like to swim, and have for many decades, and now find it difficult to do so because of many boats and anchoring blocks in the way and cement that cuts feet. The entry point into the water at the end of 38th Street was a

With a lack of a public marina, we understand that there are limited options for boat owners to access their boats easily but, please bear in mind that boats are not really supposed to be moored in the lake at all. We can accept people enjoying the lake this way if they are willing to consider the other ways that people choose to enjoy the lake. Sylvan father and daughter raise thousands for below-the-waist cancers BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A Sylvan Lake man and his daughter proudly donned the brightest, pinkest clothing they could find as they roamed the streets of Calgary in support of belowthe-waist cancers on Sunday. Cameron and Chelsea Beach raised $4,850 and $5,080, respectively, through their participation in the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Underwear Affair, in which participants chose to complete either a 5km walk or a 10km run. Both Cameron and Chelsea did the walk, which they completed in just under 50 minutes.
It was a fitting way to honour Cameron’s father, who died two years ago from bladder cancer. For both, it was the first time participating in the walk. And it likely won’t be the last. “I was really surprised how much fun it was,” said Cameron. “I think we’ll do it again for sure.” The eighth annual Underwear Affair raised more than $500,000 for Alberta Cancer Foundation. That came from more than 800 people who either ran, walked or participated in the event in another way. Cameron and Chelsea smashed their fundraising goal; at the beginning of their campaign, they each hoped to raise $300.
They had plenty of support from friends, family, neighbours and businesses. “I was quite shocked at how much people donated,” said Cameron. “I asked some people if they’d donate, and some were throwing $1,000 at me. I was thinking $50 or $25. It was very cool.” Chelsea and Cameron placed third and fourth, respectively, on the list of this year’s top fundraisers. Throughout its existence, the Underwear Affair has raised nearly $6 million for Alberta Cancer Foundation. That money goes to a crucial cause, according to Alberta Cancer Foundation CEO Myka Osinchuk. “The over half a million dollars raised
will allow the Alberta Cancer Foundation to boldly invest in things that matter most to patients and their families — faster diagnoses, better treatments, and enhanced quality of life and improved outcomes,” she said in a media release. The 9th annual Underwear Affair will take place June 6, 2015. Registration is already open online at www.uncoverthecure.org. Chelsea Beach raised more than $5,000 through her participation in the Underwear Affair.

Construction permitting about 30 per cent over last year BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS New construction in Sylvan Lake is trending about 30 per cent higher than a year ago, according to figures released by the town last week. Building statistics for May indicate permits have been issued for $22.138 million in work in the first five months of the year, up 29.9 per cent from $18.470 million in the previous year’s comparative months. Multi-family complexes account for a significant part of the increase. In May permits were issued for 33 new units, including 25 units at the marina where construction was valued at $1,305,180. The total for all the units was $2,445,475. This brings the year-to-date total for new units to 79, significantly higher than 16 units in the same period of 2013. Permits were also issued 22 new single family homes and a manufactured home. They accounted for just over 63 per cent of the month’s total of $7.54 million. Activity is taking place in all areas of the community. Eight of the permits were for construction in Beacon Hill, seven in Ryders Ridge, three in Crestview, two in Vista in Ryders Ridge and one each in Pierview and Lakeway Landing subdivisions. Construction value of the new single family homes ranged from $119,400 to $304,600. The homes included seven in the $150,000-$199,999 range, six in the $200,000-$249,999 range and six in the $250,000299,999 range. Two had construction valued under $150,000 and one was over $300,000. Permits have been issued for 41 single family homes so far this year, compared to 48 in 2013. The only commercial activity was two permits issued for tenant improvements in Cobb’s Block Central on 50th Street, with total value at $130,000. Other permits were issued for demolitions (6), detached garages (5), decks (4), basement development (4), interior renovations (2), a hot tub and a veranda.

There was no altercation. The male was checked and cleared by EMS. 11:58 a.m. – Several charges have been laid against a 43-year-old Sylvan Lake male in relation to a domestic dispute. A 47 year old female attended the RCMP detachment with injuries to report an assault. The accused is charged with three counts of assault and two counts of overcoming resistance to the commission of an indictable offence. Friday, June 6th 11:47 p.m. – A loud party resulted in a visit by RCMP to a residence on 48th Street. Complainants reported several youth playing loud music and talking loudly. Members advised the homeowner of the complaint and the party was moved inside with no further issues reported.

Sickened by destruction of goose nest on pier Dear Editor, We recently read, on the Sylvan Lake News Facebook page, about a female Canada Goose laying her eggs by the pier with her mate keeping a close guard. We went to the pier everyday to watch from a distance this Canada Goose nesting. We thought it was very special that the Canada Goose chose the pier to nest. We were gone this past weekend and came on Sunday to see that the nesting mother and her mate were not in their regular spot. My wife and I asked the park staff about the mother goose and they said that a gang of kids destroyed their nest. We were absolutely appalled that something like this happened in Sylvan Lake. We have always respected nature and are totally sickened from this depraved act. If additional precautions were taken by the Town of Sylvan Lake this might not of happened. “Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.” Remember those words? Most of us sang them as children… It was so clear then - lisping those beautiful words. Jesus loves me! And we knew it - the Bible said so, our parents said so, our Sunday School teacher said so, everyone said so - he loved us! And today when we hear a small child singing those same words, we smile and know that yes, indeed, Jesus loves that child. Our hearts grow warm and we feel that assurance, once again, that Jesus is love. We have no doubt that Jesus loves that child, and every child on the face of the earth. But what about us? We are all grown up now, we aren’t children anymore. In the tangle of our busy lives, in the midst of conflicts and anger, sorrow and grief, confusion and doubt, fear and loss ....
We have put away childish things and taken on the mantle of adult responsibility - and in doing so, we have forgotten that we are still children - God’s little children and that Jesus loves us. You see, the love of Jesus gives you hope for now and the future. Jesus came not just to give us rescue in this present world as we repent of sin and put our trust in Him alone. We have His forgiveness, His new beginning and a hope for the future. God breaks into the brokenness, the pain, the hurt, the confusion, the challenges of your world and mine--with personality, with love, with care, reminding us that there’s still plenty to live for in this life and a wonderful life in the life ahead. He doesn’t want us to lose hope--hope for the now and hope for the future in heaven with Him. “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Yes, this is the greatest theological statement ever made. Life jackets will be available for free, day-use in Sylvan Lake Provincial Park this summer, under a program announced last Wednesday. Running on the honour system, the Life Jacket Loaner Station Program offers life jackets in a variety of sizes for park visitors. It’s a joint project of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation and the Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories, in collaboration with Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research. The program is running in 17 provincial parks. “Sometimes people arrive and realize they’re one life jacket short or one’s too small or they’re not in the proper condition,” said Richard Starke, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation, in a media release. “The life jacket loaner stations provide the opportunity to grab a life jacket from the kiosk and return it when they’re done. No one should be in a boat without a life jacket.” The life jackets are located beside the Beach Ambassador’s hut in Centennial Park. The Livesaving Society is incorporating a new public education initiative into the loaner stations called “Preventable”. The initiative will involve displaying signs which include the message “You’re not expecting to need a life jacket today.” The message is aimed at having people stop and think before heading out onto the water, and to encourage them to visit the kiosk and borrow a life jacket, according to a release from Barbara Costache, chief administrative officer of the organization.

Painting yellow fish on sidewalks beside storm drains was the task of a group of Grade 3 French Immersion students from École Steffie Woima Elementary School and their partners from École H. J. Cody High School. Cody teacher Linda Wagers said her advanced outdoor education students are working on environmental issues as part of a CTS course. Painting the fish and the words ‘rain water only’ is meant to raise awareness about the need to prevent things other than stormwater from entering the drains.
Teacher Linda Wagers explained how to use a stencil to paint yellow fish and the slogan ‘rain water only’ beside storm water drains. A group of Grade 3 French Immersion students from Mme. The Eckville field and other major fields became busy and the hotel was always full. The agricultural industry was also doing well. Dawe continued his narration through the technology changes of the 1970s — telephones you could carry with you that weighed 6 pounds. The 1980s were challenging times for Benalto. The railway shut down and grain elevators,
those prairie sentinels, began to disappear. The hotel burned down and main street was not as busy as it had been. But Countryside Meadows Estate was started. The Presbyterian Church was sold. So much has changed over 100 years, he said. Before the railway, it took 4-5 days to make it to Red Deer. There was huge backbreaking work clearing land. Telephone lines were run on fence posts because they couldn’t afford telephone polls. Through it all, though, there was a sense of neighbourliness, a willingness to help. And it continues to be one of the best agricultural paradises in the world.
“Probably the best is yet to come,” he concluded. At the end of the morning presentation, 100 balloons were released into the air. The afternoon featured birthday cake served by Royal Purple members. There were also displays to view, people to visit and memories to exchange. The day continued through the evening with a catered dinner followed by a program on the stage by Pat Meyers and Impact Dancers, and then a dance on the hard packed ground. Fireworks lit the sky at dark. Sunday’s events included a breakfast, memorial service, lunch and dog agility show.

At the same time others were watching a slide presentation which featured old pictures and stories of the community.

Lions paraded through streets raising awareness about diabetes BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Lions club members from across Alberta converged on Sylvan Lake Saturday to take part in the annual Lions Cavalcade for Diabetes Awareness. They came from Pigeon Lake, South
Edmonton, Vegreville, Lethbridge, Calgary, Camrose, Beaverlodge, St. Albert and other points. After conducting the annual meeting of the organization and listening to a presentation by Canadian Diabetes Association, Lions members decked their vehicles with logos, lions of every shape and size, and other decorations. Then they paraded through the streets of
Sylvan Lake on their quest to raise awareness about diabetes. Dennis Stevenson, chairman of the committee, said the organization annually raises $40,000-$60,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association — part of which funds the Travelling Diabetes Resource program which distributes information and makes presentations.
Sylvan Lions members Dave Leshchyshyn and Kay Bystrom decorated a vehicle for use by club members in the Lions Cavalcade which took place in Sylvan Lake Saturday afternoon.
Residents walking along streets in Sylvan Lake Saturday afternoon may have been surprised at the number of Lions passing by them. Lions of all shapes and sizes decorated vehicles in the Lions Cavalcade. This motor home, by John and Frances Sawiak of Vegreville, was one of the more creative. Lockyer, Matthews steadily improving in beach volleyball BY KIM MATTHEWS SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Sylvan Lakers Morgan Lockyer and Erin Matthews were in Calgary for their first Alberta Beach Volleyball league tournament for the season, the weekend of May 31st. They went into this tournament with only one practice under their belts. (They wanted to say a special thanks to Coach Wayne Halliday for getting them on the court before they went.) They only won one game out of five but defiantly got better with each game. They placed about 22nd out of 28 teams and had smiles on their faces the whole time. The girls participated in Jr. High Beach
Volleyball Provincials, representing H. J. Cody Lakers at John Fry Park in Edmonton on the weekend competing against 38 teams from all over Alberta. Morgan and Erin started the tournament winning their first three games last Friday. On Saturday they came up a little short losing the first game 17-25 and then a really close second game losing 24-26 to get knocked out of the playoffs. They finished the tournament in about 14th out of the 38 teams. This was a great showing from these two girls, who are steadily improving their game with each practice and tournament. Good luck to all the teams that will be competing for Sylvan Lake Wave Beach Volleyball Club at the next tournament in Edmonton on June 21st.

One athlete from École H. J. Cody High School competed in track and field provincials at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary on the weekend. Wyatt Bosse placed second in junior boys 100 metre hurdles at the Central Alberta High School
Zone track and field meet in Red Deer May 28 to earn a berth in provincials. He finished with a time of 15.52 seconds just over half a second behind Gernil Szmyts of Lacombe. At provincials, Bosse placed eighth in the preliminary race and then ran to a sixth place finish in the final with a time of 15.61.
Another first for Lynn BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Golfer Jaxon Lynn qualified for the 2014 Frank Lindsay Jr. Boys Championship at an event on Sunday. He finished first with a two under par score of 70, beating 91 junior boys, at the Collicutt Siding Course in Crossfield. There were four other qualifying tournaments held on Sunday throughout the province. The Frank Lindsay Jr. Championship tournament will be held at the Bearspaw Country Club, Calgary, on July 8 -11.

Obituaries GOODACRE George Edward George passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the age of 75 years. George was born and raised in Red Deer and lived in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake for most of his life. He played highlevel hockey for many teams, loved to boat, collected and admired cars, and enjoyed many winters in Arizona. George taught at Mynarski Park at Penhold and C.P. Blakely School in Sylvan Lake for a total of 35 years. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Mary Anne; his sister Margie Coleman; daughters Monica Begg and Carmen Klose (Glen); stepchildren Sheila Graham (Jesse), Elizabeth Fraser (Wil), Ian Soder (Gillian); and ten grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Terry Coleman and his parents Harry and Annie Goodacre. A farewell celebration was held in George’s honour on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Optimistic Market The number of sales in May in Sylvan Lake was the highest since May of 2005. It seems the residential, homeowner market has fully recovered from the downturn in 2008 while the cottage market is still a little in the doldrums. Million dollar plus lakefront homes are still not moving like they did in the heydays of 2005–2007. The most active market is in the $250,000 to $400,000 range and is at least partially fuelled by very strong demand coupled with low supply in Red Deer. Buyers who start looking in Red Deer and can’t find what they want there are often willing to consider a short commute for a suitable home in a surrounding community. The
draw of the lake likely adds to their willingness to take on that commute. Optimism in all of Alberta remains strong as the economy continues to forge ahead. Energy producers have found a way to move our landlocked oil to markets using rail and it appears that our economy is firing on all cylinders. The future continues to look very bright in central Alberta, therefore we expect the housing market to remain robust for the foreseeable future.
