School strike returns this Friday Rotating walkout in Langley for third week By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Black Press

Andrea Gielens, a species at risk biologist, knows there is a small population of western painted turtles living in this pond at Campbell Valley Park in south Langley. She is currently working on a project at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove which aims to return 73 juvenile turtles to the wild this August.

The quiet country pond is just a short walk across a field from busy 16 Avenue in South Langley. Despite the relatively easy access, it’s quiet here on a cool, late winter morning. Even birds are scarce — perhaps frightened off by a pair of visitors. A light breeze gently ruffles the surface of the water, but it’s what Andrea Gielens believes is hidden beneath the waterline, and along the grassy banks that is making waves within the zoological community. The pond, part of Campbell Valley Park, is home to a small number of western painted turtles. Named for the colourful and elaborate markings on their undersides, the turtles, which are native to the region, are classified as a species at risk of extinction. In Washington and Oregon states as well as in B.C.’s Interior, western painted turtles populations

are stable. But that is not the case here, said Gielens. In addition to the Langley park, a few individuals remain on the Sunshine Coast and at an Agassiz farm. But thanks to the introduction of another, more aggressive species of turtle — the red-eared slider — the number of western painted turtles in coastal populations has dwindled to the point that human intervention has been deemed necessary. Gielens, a biologist who specializes in species at risk, is employed by Guelph, Ontario-based Wildlife Preservation Canada. She is currently working at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove — about a mile from where she grew up — on an ambitious project which aims to return 73 juvenile western painted turtles to the wild later this summer. For now, the turtles are being kept in black plastic tubs inside a small heated barn at the zoo, where they were hatched last August. Since then, their only job has been to eat and

grow large enough to be released safely into the wild. Normally, the turtles would hibernate, frozen solid through the winter, but if these creatures had been left to do that, “chances are a lot wouldn’t survive,” Gielens said. Rather than risk losing more of the already endangered hatchlings, the turtles were brought indoors and kept awake through the winter, being fed spongey cubes of minced seafood, fortified with a calcium supplement. Once a week, they gobble down a treat of crickets, mealworms, bloodworms and brine shrimp. Gielens and her colleagues — two Greater Vancouver Zoo employees — share the duties of caring for their tiny reptilian charges. The project is modeled closely on a successful program that has been going on in the U.S. for the past 20 years.

It will be a long weekend for Aldergrove students this week. The teachers’ strike continues with Langley schools behind picket lines on Friday, June 13. However, the strike may morph into a full-scale walkout, as teachers voted Monday and Tuesday as to whether step up job action. The B.C. Teachers Federation says it will give parents 72 hours notice, but it is possible that there could be a full-scale school strike by Monday. The school calendar calls for classes to continue until Thursday, June 26. In the meantime, the BCTF is saying it is running out of strike pay for teachers. The district announced on Monday that students’ report cards will be given out but they will not look anything like the ones they are used to. Provincial exams will go ahead but may be supervised by administration. And summer sessions are still planned to go ahead. SEE: Page 4

Turtles sold as pets among greatest threats FROM: FRONT

The results of that study have given Gielens reason to be optimistic. “They found that released turtles lay eggs and have offspring at the same rate as wild turtles,” she said. The juveniles will be released in August, when they have reached at least 30 grams. More than 90 per cent are expected to survive. Gielens is currently working with Metro Vancouver for permits to release the turtles at the same Agassiz farm where the eggs were collected as well as into the pond at Campbell Valley Park. There is also a plan to affix tiny transmitters to the animals “and follow them around to see what kind of habitat they use.” This is the second year that the Langley biologist has worked on the project. Last year, 12 eggs were retrieved from a beach on the Sunshine Coast — one that is popular with both people and their dogs — and brought to the zoo. “If we had left them there (on the beach) to hatch they were unlikely to have survived,” said Gielens. “Someone was going to step on them.” A third batch of eggs has already been collected. It is anticipated that they will hatch this August and be ready for release in the summer of 2015. All 12 of last year’s eggs hatched and were successfully returned to the spot from which they were taken. They’re being monitored and are doing well, said Gielens. “Immediately after they were released, they began eating. They knew what they were looking for,” she said. “At one site, we had a bit of a National Geographic moment.” Near the spot where the juveniles were introduced, there were a number of adults basking. The young turtles swam over to meet the resident adults and they all swam off together. “It was a real Disney moment,” she laughed. Unlike a Disney movie, however, there is no guarantee of a happy ending for the western painted turtle. Both the eggs and hatchlings are vulnerable to everything from human activity to animal predation, to vegetation. In addition to the danger of nests being

stepped on or dug up, the roots of fastgrowing invasive plants can actually grow right through the eggs, or even newly hatched turtles, which are packed together tightly and remain motionless during hibernation. Poaching of nesting females can also be a problem. Another reason biologists speculate that turtle populations are declining is that urban growth is forcing them out of their natural habitat, leaving fewer and fewer places that are suitable for nesting and basking. One of the greatest threats to the western painted turtle’s survival, however, is competition from red-eared sliders. Named for the characteristic red stripe along the sides of their heads, the breed most commonly sold as pets, are not native to B.C. and therefore are classified as an invasive species. Cute and small, turtles theoretically make great starter pets for children. What people don’t think about when they buy the tiny turtles, said Gielens, is that they will grow. “They get big and smelly and bite-y,” she said. “I’ve had a turtle take a chunk out of my hand the size of a quarter — that’s less adorable.” Add to that, the fact turtles can live upward of 50 years in captivity, and it becomes more of a commitment than most people are willing to make. Once the novelty wears off, the unwanted pets are often dumped into the closest pond where, biologists recently discovered, they are beginning to successfully breed. When red-eared sliders are captured, they are humanely destroyed. It’s unfortunate, but there’s no choice, said Gielens. Most have developed respiratory problems because they are not suited to a cool, damp climate like B.C.’s. “They came from Florida. They can live here, but it’s not good for them.” The best solution, rather than having to euthanize them, is to simply decrease the number of turtles being sold and subsequently released into the wild, said Gielens. She approached the City of Langley earlier this year and asked them to consider passing a

bylaw to prevent the sale of turtles and turtle eggs at local pet stores. “We’re trying to go after every municipality,” she said. “We have a generally good idea where the pet stores are that are non-compliant.” The sale of turtles falls under the federal wildlife act, but having locally enforceable regulations in place can only help reduce the numbers of red-eared sliders in the wild, Gielens explained during her presentation to the City. Council declined to pass a bylaw, opting instead to change its business licences to include a ban on the sale of both turtles and their eggs. The only pet store within City limits — PetSmart — indicated that it does not sell either. Gielens would have preferred a bylaw, but said awareness is one of the main goals of the western painted turtle rehabilitation program. “It’s getting the public to know that 99 per cent of the time, when they see a turtle at a pet store, they’re illegal,” she said. “If not, they’re likely endangered.”

Board anticipating $190 million school year By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Black Press

In 1934, Langley school board passed an annual operating budget of $25,000. Fast forward to today, and the board is looking at passing a $189.8 million budget for the 2014-15 school year. Secretary-treasurer David Green presented the comparison to add a bit of ‘humour’ to his presentation of the upcoming year’s financials at a board of education meeting held at Township hall on Monday, June 2. The venue was changed to respect the striking teachers. Expenditures are up about $1.2 million from last year, mainly for increased staffing to fill the new schools that have opened and the middle school set to open in September in Yorkson. School boards are required to submit an annual balanced budget to the Ministry of Education by June 30. Langley is dipping into its projected

surplus to balance the budget. Unlike so many districts across B.C., it isn’t facing a deficit. But Green has cautioned that Langley could face one again if it doesn’t find new ways to save money in the future. There was a budget open house held on June 3. On June 17, after feedback from the public is received, the board will vote on third reading of the budget. Showing a graph of districts of comparable size, Langley pays out the highest amount of its budget, 91.55 per cent, to salaries and benefits. Neighbouring Abbotsford pays out 89 per cent of its budget to the same. In comparison, Langley paid out the lowest amount, 8.45 per cent, to supplies and services. Having the budget being eaten up by salaries is not sustainable, warned Green. “We are well over the B.C. average. What this tells me is this is not sustainable. It should be down to 89 per cent of the budget and we should increase the percentage of services and supplies,” Green said.

“It does reflect, however, that we did put in three new schools that had to be staffed but we have schools with continued decline of enrolment and we need to start looking at that.” Costs for district administration staff is in alignment with other districts in similar size, he said. There were some concerns outlined by trustees. The district spent $182,000 to host 45 students from Thailand for a semester last year. The money was spent on paying families to host them, for ESL and for ‘cultural experiences.’ Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman said hosting the international students was both a cultural and financial success, with the district coming out $40,000 ahead. The District PAC president asked about two new hires in the district: a health and wellness officer and safety officer to get staff back to work faster, to check people’s work space, etc. To that end, that is why the district budgeted to pay out less for substitutes next year, said Green.

Tidball memorial set for June 22 A celebration of life will be held for George Tidball on Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. at Thunderbird Show Park. Tidball, founder of the internationally recognized and award winning Thunderbird equestrian centre, died last week at the age of 83. The long-time Langley resident created the Keg Steakhouse restaurants and also brought the first McDonald’s restaurants to western Canada.

Doug Hadley Slo-Pitch National says it's Ump Day Slo-Pitch National has recognized Doug Hadley as one of the fantastic umpires from across the country. Doug Hadley, of Aldergrove, has been an SPN Umpire since 1989 and currently chairs the Rules Committee for Slo-Pitch National and is a very active member of the Langley Slo-pitch Umpires Association. Doug has officiated in various sports for 52 years and umpired his first Little League game at age 13. Doug prides himself in his involvement in sport and has umpired baseball, fast-pitch and now slo-pitch. "My first Slo-pitch game was in 1980 and I did my first Senior Mens National Championship in 1981 at Prince George, British Columbia," said Doug. Doug now enjoys discussing the rules and unusual plays more so than actual umpiring. Since becoming the Chairman of the Officiating Committee, Doug enjoys assisting with the preparation of the National Umpires Exam each year and overseeing the preparation of the next edition of the Umpires Manual. Some of Doug memories include umpiring in a tornado, a snow storm, lightning, a mild earth quake, a solar eclipse and of course a plethora of tame and wild animals common to all slo-pitch enthusiasts in British Columbia. Doug is a retired RCMP officer who raised his family in Aldergrove. He remains actively involved in the community as a member of the Aldergrove Rotary club, supporter of the Aldergrove Kodiaks Junior B hockey team and continues to work as manager of a poultry farm here.

Racetracks rally behind Langley stable fire victims Fundraiser announced by owners of B.C. and Ontario tracks By DAN FERGUSON Black Press

Racetracks in B.C. and Ontario are raising money for the owner and trainers of the 17 horses that died in the June 1 fire that completely destroyed a stable near on 224 Street and 40 Avenue. The campaign was announced by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, the company that operates the racetracks. The standardbred horses were trained by Bill Davis and owned by Rick Mowles of J J J Stables competed in harness racing. “It’s the worst thing that can happen when you’re in the racing industry,” said Chuck Keeling, Great Canadian’s vice president in charge of stakeholders relations and responsible gaming. “It is a horrific loss for everyone.” The horses and equipment lost in the fire were not insured.

Four Great Canadian Gaming racetrack facilities are involved; Fraser Downs Racetrack in Surrey, Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, and the Ontariobased Georgian Downs and Flamboro Downs tracks. All will be collecting cash donations until Tuesday, June 17. As well, Fraser Downs and Harness Racing B.C. will co-host a fund-raising night at Fraser Downs on Tuesday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception in the Homestretch at Fraser Downs. The evening will include a silent auction. Those wishing to contribute to the silent auction should deliver their items to the Fraser Downs reception desk before Sunday, June 15. For more information contact Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino at 604-576-9141. The fire that killed 16 standardbred horses and one pony is believed to be one of the worst involving livestock ever recorded in Langley Township. Investigators suspect the fire may have started in the electrical wiring of the old wood-frame building.

The prospect of piping diluted heavy oil across northern B.C. and loading it in tankers has generated significant genuine protests, as well as bursts of celebrity nonsense, rent-a-stunts and instant online petitions. Natural gas pipelines and export terminals, on the other hand, are generally accepted by the public. Premier Christy Clark staked her political future on developing liquefied natural gas exports, and pulled off an upset election win that not even Clark expected. Most of the heat she’s taken on that is focused on her extravagant predictions that LNG will pay off the debt and maybe even get rid of our sales tax. But as I predicted 18 months ago, there’s a shift in the target of professional protesters to natural gas. A reminder of that awaited me on a morning walk to the B.C. legislature during the last week of the May session. At the front gate stood a young woman in a bikini top and shorts, her skin smeared with a dark material, presumably to simulate crude oil. She waved to passing traffic, stretching a banner promoting a website for the “Unist’ot’en camp.” Legislature security intervened to clear the entry walkway before I could ask the protester who was paying her. The fundraising website she

Protesters now targeting gas

was promoting hadn’t been updated since March, but this isn’t the first time this camp has been promoted here. Chevron’s Burnaby oil refinery was also targeted May 30 by protesters who locked themselves to a gate with bicycle locks and chains. They also cited the Unist’ot’en camp and their aim to stop the Pacific Trails pipeline. The camp came to my attention last summer, when it was promoted by one of Victoria’s chronic anarchist protesters, a woman who goes by the name Zoe Blunt. Blunt and other southern protesters documented their trip north to support the camp’s stated goal, to stop the Pacific Trails gas pipeline, planned to supply the Chevron-Apache liquefied natural gas terminal near Kitimat. The camp is on Crown land near Smithers. It was established at the end of a one-lane bridge by two members of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. While that community’s elected council maintains a respectful relationship with the B.C. government, the splinter group that backs the camp has confrontation in mind. The Unist’ot’en website is a jumble of demands and claims that alternates between the Pacific Trails gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal. Like the woman at the legislature, if you want it to be against oil, it’s against oil.

A clearer picture of this situation is provided by a relentless blogger named Greg Renouf, who specializes in investigating protesters across Canada. His blog, www. genuinewitty.com, should be required reading for reporters who are presented with slick banners and posturing protesters. Renouf follows the money as well as the familiar faces who pop up at protest after protest. In April he reported that the increasingly militant Council of Canadians is supporting the Unist’ot’en camp, along with what he describes as “a host of NGOs, unions, militant anarchists and professional protesters.” They include Harsha Walia, who organized violent protests against the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Meanwhile in the real world, TransCanada Corp. announced last week its subsidiary NovaGas Transmission has signed an agreement with Chevron and Apache for a gas pipeline that will connect to Pacific Trails. It’s one of four gas pipelines TransCanada has in development for what is planned to be the biggest industrial investment in B.C. history. They can smear it with oil, but gas is the protest industry’s latest target. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Langley Memorial Hospital is fortunate that there are so many generous residents of this community — people who contribute millions to the hospital through giving to capital campaigns, supporting the hospital auxiliary and giving money through bequests. This spirit of generosity was on display on two occasions last week — at the unveiling of the new maternity clinic, most of which was funded through private donations, and at the annual Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation gala, held Saturday night. The new maternity clinic cost $6.5 million, with the Foundation committing to pay for $5.35 million of that through gifts. It is named the Vandekerkhove Family Maternity Clinic, in honour of a $1 million donation from the well-known Langley family. Fraser Health Authority paid for infrastructure upgrades to allow the new clinic to proceed. The electrical, seismic, and water service upgrades cost an additional $5.5 million. However, the hospital faces many challenges in the future, and some of them are a result of political decisions. Langley Township is planning to almost double its population in the next 25 years, but there are no plans to add capacity to the hospital in the near future, or even long-term. Perhaps the biggest threat to care at LMH could come this week. There are persistent rumours that FHA will be rolled into the larger Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. These were partially substantiated when it became known Friday that FHA’s CEO Dr. Nigel Murray is leaving his post to return to his native New Zealand. He is being replaced by the former Vancouver Coastal CEO. FHA is undergoing a review, the findings of which have been delayed. Its board chair was fired in April. If Langley’s future hospital needs are going to come under the purview of a giant Vancouver-based health authority, count on this hospital getting almost no attention. Smaller community hospitals will be all but ignored. There will be very little funding for long-term planning and expansion. Langley residents will pay a steep price for that lack of attention.

Fulfilling pledge as a witness I am fulfilling my promise as a witness, and passing along a story. It is a story set in history that will carry today’s mesMcGregor sage of hope and a warning to the future. On June 1, I was honJim McGregor oured to have been invited to a breakfast and blessing ceremony for the canoe crew which departed Sunday from the Kwantlen tribal lands in Fort Langley on a 90-day, 1,200 kilometre journey along the west coast to Alaska. We are to meet at the new Kwantlen Cultural Centrer, a striking western red cedar building designed as a gathering place for such occasions. We can hear the dramatic drumming and uplifting singing coming from within. We hesitate at the door. Do we wait until they finish, do we just walk in? If this were a football stadium or a hockey rink we would know what to do but here, even though they are our neighbours, we are unsure of the cultural procedures. Chief Marilyn Gabriel is there and her gentle smile and open arms beckon us in. She asks us to make ourselves comfortable. We soon learn that there are many parts to the ceremony we will see today. We will be welcomed and fed, we will be asked to listen and learn and we will “do the work” as we bless the canoe and the paddlers. Some of us are asked to be witnesses because the Kwantlen have no written language and their history has been passed down by families that have attended such ceremonies over the centuSEE: PAGE 7

Vigilance on farmland is necessary Editor: Re: “Farmland fate a test for parties,” (The Star, June 5). For Tom Fletcher, a fan of the recent ALR bill, only “a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land” might make the concerns about it “at least partially true.” Short of the flood, it seems any bad effect from the weakened Agricultural Land Commission Act is nothing. Fortunately, the bill spurred wide pro-

ALR action. The efforts to stop “the bill to kill the ALR” (at least for consultation) were also a means to boost the critical mass of aware citizens for the next stage, which is now. Awareness matters. We saw that in Richmond a few years ago when a fellow who publicly wanted a high-profile property out of the ALR almost got onto the Agricultural Land Commission panel to decide on it. Of course, the ALC is a tribunal, and like a

court it is meant to start with evidence, not decisions. Until the recent bill kneecapped the commission, current chair Richard Bullock was modernizing the ALC methods for quality assurance and efficiency, minimizing mistakes. Now the changes to the ALC Act have disabled much of the progress and worse. With vigilance, the harm can be limited. Jim Wright, president, Garden City Conservation Society, Richmond

BEST BUY – Correction Notice In the June 6 flyer, page 20, the Canon All-In-One Monochrome Laser Printer (MF4770N) (WebCode: 10221843) was advertised with an incorrect spec. Please be advised that this laser printer is NOT wireless, as previously advertised. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

Why the excessive road maintenance? Editor: In my area of South Langley, the Rural Road Maintenance Team is in the midst of a far too generous taxpayer-funded spending bonanza. It started in the late winter, long before any visible grass growth, with “trimming” of the roadside verges. The next activity is the scouring of the ditches involving chopping of vegetation, chewing up the top couple of inches

of dirt and massacre of every frog, toad, salamander and snake that lived there. Each ditch warranted a pass on both sides of it and sometimes another up to the private property fence line. The final deed is the irregular gouging of often visually pleasing verges in the name of removing any grass sod with the temerity to grow above the level of the road surface. So after all this action, five or six passes on

each side of every road with diesel-guzzling heavy equipment belching noxious fumes, we end up with more air pollution, exuberant new vegetation growth in the ditches, ugly gouges in what were nicely owner-maintained grass verges and the murder of thousands of harmless amphibians. Is this value for taxpayer dollars? Margaret Ormston, Langley

New NDP leader has benefited from severance pay and casino expansion Editor: In the Maritimes, politics is a disease, in Quebec, a religion, in Ontario, a business, on the Prairies, a protest, and in B.C., just entertainment. John Horgan, leader of the B.C. NDP seems to have problems about “severance pay” and “casino expansion.” Horgan’s recently-appointed new chief of staff, John Heaney, is a former business partner of Horgan’s. They were partners in a company called IdeaWorks. The other partners were NDP caucus research director Mary O’Donoghue, and Ian Reid, former chief of staff to ex-NDP leader Carole James. After the NDP was voted out of office in 2001, Horgan lost his job and was given a cheque that contained severance pay. He

opened up a consulting company called IdeaWorks. Note, a consultant is anyone with a briefcase 50 miles away from home. IdeaWorks was retained by casino operators Gary Jackson and Len Libin in 2003 to persuade the then COPE-controlled Vancouver city council to lift a moratorium on slot machines. At the time, Horgan said that the company’s objective was to bring diverse groups together to demonstrate how slot machines would yield benefits for charities, fund city projects, and provide jobs for trade unions. “Once the fabric all came together, the cloth looked pretty impressive for a majority of council,” he said. Horgan’s lobbying was successful in bring-

ing in more slot machines. Horgan, Heaney, and Reid had all previously worked for the B.C. Ministry of Management Services, which spearheaded the expansion of gambling when the NDP was in control of the provincial government. Now come to the present day, and Horgan has new versions of his past. Large severance payouts to former government employees should cease and no more casino expansions. This shows that he has a set of double standards. He is changing his views to agree with whomever is paying his paycheque. It’s unbelievable, but true. Joe Sawchuk, Duncan

Canoe journey will focus on fragile coastline FROM: PAGE 6 ries. Often families from different areas would gather in the long houses for weeks at a time as the stories were passed. After the meal, which is prepared to last us all day, we are entertained and educated. To us, at first, the drumming and the songs sound much the same but we are taught that the differences in the cadence of the drum beat and the rise and fall of the voices have significant meanings. The canoe for this journey sits outside and we surround it to gather prayers to send along. Each of us has a small cedar bough that we

will place in a blanket, along with a prayer, that will be taken with the paddlers. As the Healer begins her blessing, a lone eagle lands on the largest bough of the tallest tree and watches for a bit, gives approval, and carries on down river. The ancestors have made their appearance and have gone on ahead. Back inside the stories continue. We learn that the river is like an old woman whom we must respect. Those that don’t suffer the consequences. Brandon Gabriel is one of the paddlers and he shares that the purpose of the journey is to shed light on the pristine coastlines, fragile

ecosystems, and the sustainability of remote and small communities that they will visit along the way. We must teach our children, to educate them that the beauty of this place will disappear, if we don’t look after it. The time for the send-off has arrived. As we watch them pull away we are proud that we have sent a small piece of each of us along. We can only hope that the gentle dip and swing of their paddles will be louder than the oil tanker propellers. We wish them calm seas, warm sunshine and a wind at their backs. At least that’s what McGregor says.

Local growers offer only the ‘berry’ best Here in the Lower Mainland, nothing says summer quite like biting into a juicy, sweet strawberry that’s been naturally ripened to perfection by the warm sun. The climate of the Lower Mainland is a dream come true, for strawberry producers: mild wet winters, cool springs and hot summers. Combined with rich earth, we have growing conditions that are unsurpassed yielding a luscious, flavourful and naturally sweet strawberry. As our cooler spring weather starts gave way to the warmer days of late May and early June, the highly-anticipated

strawberry crop, one of the first crops of our bountiful growing season, is available in local vegetable markets, farmers markets and at the many “U-Pick farms around the region. There are plenty of reasons to anticipate the arrival of the local strawberry crop, and first and foremost, it’s because the quality and flavour. The moment you bite into a locally-produced strawberry you’ll appreciate the freshness, succulence and fantastic flavor that can only be found in strawberries that are ripened to their natural peak of sweetness and flavour, just as nature intended.

Local berries are distinctive in their juiciness, intensity of flavour, and tantalizing combination of natural sugars that develop over time in the mild growing conditions of the Lower Mainland. Consumers of home grown strawberries know that these gifts of nature deliver unsurpassed quality, flavor and value every time. Local strawberries are nutritional powerhouses, offering health benefits-anti oxidants, fibre and vitamin C. Local strawberries are picked at the peak of perfection. Consumers know local strawberries offer unmatched

freshness, picked and delivered the same day guarantees that local strawberries will arrive at the table at their peak of ripeness. Whether you purchase locally grown strawberries for a summer treat, for canning and preserving, or for adding to everything from salads to pancakes, you’ll appreciate the unique freshness of strawberries that are sweet, satisfying and wholesome. For information on where to find delicious B.C. strawberries, and for full range of recipe ideas, go to the BC Strawberry Growers Association website at This year’s local strawberry crop will soon be ripe and www.bcstrawberries.com available for picking. it. “This is a huge project,” he said, noting that organizers expect to welcome more than 50,000 visitors over the course of the celebration, which will be free and will offer visitors parking at no charge. “We’re going to feed them, entertain them and keep their children happy.” In order to make that happen, the committee will need plenty of help, he said. On Tuesday morning, the committee put out the call for anyone who is interested in being a part of the inaugural cooperative celebration to sign up. “We need to spread the word for volunteers,” said Barrett. “Without them, we are nothing.” Anyone who would like to volunteer or is interested in learning more, is invited to visit either the Langley Canada Day website at langleycanadaday.ca or the International Festival Society’s website at internationalfestival.ca. our community to celebrate Canada through sports, our various cultures and our common heritage as Canadians,” read a statement from Langley MP Mark Warawa. The first two days of the four-day event will be a sports festival, featuring competition in everything from masters lacrosse to beach volleyball, soccer, bocce and tennis. As many as 600 athletes are expected to participate, said Tourism Langley’s Mun Bagri. Once the nets and rackets and balls have been put away, the traditional celebration will begin. On June 30 and July 1, the festival will offer live entertainment, a marketplace, food vendors serving a range of traditional ethnic fare, international pavilions, children’s entertainers, a children’s talent show, rides, a car show, fireworks and more. On July 1, there will be a parade of nations, with participants representing more than 70 countries. “People will be selling things from all the countries in the world,” said Bob Barrett, president of the Langley International Festival Society. Barrett acknowledged the vast scope of the task the committee has before

Since its humble beginnings as a church fundraiser, which drew about 1,500 people in 2001, the goal of Langley’s International Festival has always been to foster a sense of unity among the vast array of cultures which make up the community. Over the past 12 years, the celebration of cultural diversity in Langley has grown and evolved, but its purpose has remained unchanged. Now, that co-operative spirit is being taken a step further, as the International Festival and Langley’s annual Canada Day celebrations officially join forces. The celebration of national pride, and of the diversity that makes Canada a unique and welcoming place, will happen over four days, from June 28 to July 1 at Willoughby Community Park. A co-operative effort by the Township of Langley, Tourism Langley, the Langley Events Centre, the Langley School District and the Fraser Valley Regional Library, the event marks the first time these groups have all joined forces to pres-

ent a major community festival. Langley has always done an excellent job of celebrating Canada Day, said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese, speaking during the official media launch, held on Tuesday, May 27 at the Tourism Langley office. Now, the celebration has “gone through a transformation and an evolution … we can all be proud of,” he said. The marriage of Canada Day and the International Festival is one that will last many years, he predicted. Sarwan Randhawa, librarian with Fraser Valley Regional Library and International Festival Society member for the past 10 years, told the crowd he expects the collaborative event will be the “biggest ever in the history of Langley.” It is also the only event that is actively promoted and supported by library staff, he added. “The world identifies Canada as as a multicultural society and a model of tolerance and acceptance for other countries to follow,” said MLA Rich Coleman, in a written statement, which was read out at the launch. “ L a n g l e y ’ s International Festival and Canada Day celebrations are an important way for

NEWS & VIEWS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE For the 4th year in a row, your Co-op showed record sales and surpassed the previous year by approximately $5 million, with year-end sales of $171,954,134. Equity and cash payments to members for the year ending February 28, 2014, will amount to $5,679,000. The financial statement was one of the main items on the agenda at the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, May 29. Approximately 200 members and guests heard Reports from the Controller, General Manager, and President, all telling a very positive story. It was also announced that just shy of 3000 people became members of the Otter Co-op in the last fiscal year, each paying a $10 lifetime membership fee whereby they can now accrue equity in the Co-op and receive cash back on their purchases based on the year from March 1st. – February 28th. This happens by being a supporter of all that the Co-op offers, be it food, hardware, fuel, or feed. We opened our sixth gas bar in Hatzic in 2013 and also took over a Feed Mill in Armstrong, which will complement our Feed Mill on 248th Street. Also announced, and opening in early Fall 2014, will be a new Petroleum Facility at Chilliwack which will include a 24 hour cardlock, convenience store, bulk fuel depot, oil and lubricant warehouse, and gas station. During our AGM, Otter Co-op presented seven Grade 12 scholarships, and two mature scholarships. We are also a Community Builder, giving in excess of $100,000 to sports teams, school functions, and many community-oriented events. Our management team is always aware, and on the lookout for what might be a good mix for what the Co-op can offer to its members. Times change and so do we. An election saw current board member Dick Mayer re-elected to the Board, and newly elected were Martin Power and Kent Strobel all for a three year term. And to our entire team here at the Coop, I must say thank-you. This is how our Co-op works – through co-operation. It is mentioned elsewhere in our newsletter about upcoming events. Be sure to mark your calendar to attend throughout the summer and don’t forget our Equity Days September, 18, 19, and 20 where you can come and pick up equity statements and cheques. To all, have a safe and happy summer, and remember our slogan “You’re At Home Here”.

Kids’ Club Easter Party

Joining GM One-to-One

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY It was another fun filled Easter Party with approximately 500 Kids’ Club Members and their families in attendance. The ever popular petting zoo put on by Langley Beef & Swine Club was a busy spot as was the horse and wagon rides by Rocking Horse Carriage from Aldergrove. Madame Butterfly created balloon art along with other face painters and entertainers. Additionally there was cupcake decorating, popcorn and many game stations with a prize at every booth. If you know someone that has not yet reached their twelfth birthday and is not a Kids’ Club Member have them come to the administration office or sign up online and join today. Benefits include a cookie on every visit to the store as well as a treat from the cashiers goodie container. All Kids’ Club events are free to attend!

HOLLY LINGEL Holly joined Otter in 1998 as a Gas Bar Manager. Her previous experience in the petroleum industry saw her career progress from the position of Convenience Retail Manager to the role of gas bar owner and contract operator prior to joining the CRS. Since 1998, Holly has continued to advance her career with Otter as the Tempo and Commercial Petroleum Sales Co-ordinator, a role she held until 2003. In her current role as Gas Bar Operations Manager, Holly excels in her ability to train and develop her team—both being key components to the success of Otters aggressive growth strategy. With Holly’s drive to constantly learn and grow her decision to apply for General Manager One-to-One training was no surprise. An outstanding recommendation from her General Manager, demonstrated leadership skills, operational knowledge, as well as her exceptional people skills made Holly an ideal fit for the training program. Everyone at Otter will miss Holly but wish her success in her new role as a GM One-to-One trainee which she started on June 2 at Wetaskiwin Alberta.

JELLY BEAN GUESS WINNER Owen King, had the closest guess and won the Jelly Bean Guess Contest. Great job Owen!

The 2nd Annual two day car show turned out to be another great success. This show is sponsored by Central Fraser Valley Chapter V.C.C. and Otter Co-op. We look forward to our 3rd Annual show on Sunday, April 26, 2015. The car club held their last meeting before the summer on Wednesday, June 4 and invited Otter Co-op representatives Kelsey Vurdela (Marketing Co-ordinator) and Merilee McAuley (Ex. Assist. To the General Manager) and presented them with a plaque of appreciation. They also served an Otter Coop made cake. We look forward to another great show in 2015!

Township residents i nvited to speak up online People who live in the Township of Langley are encouraged to Speak Up and have their say about programs and initiatives being offered in their community. In May, a new online tool was launched to engage citizens and give them a chance to weigh in on issues. The speakup.tol.ca portal will feature forums and surveys on various subjects, provide information about ongoing projects, and allow the public to join in on topical discussions. “The Township of Langley is always looking for new ways to engage the public and collect their input,” said IT Manager

Steve Scheepmaker. “We have our website at tol. ca and a strong social media presence. This is another way that we can use technology to connect with people and encourage them to provide us with feedback on various topics.” With the initial introduction of speakup.tol.ca, Township staff will be monitoring the portal to see how it is accepted and used by the public and determine other ways it can be utilized. Speakup.tol.ca is getting started with its first topic for discussion: the new Recreation, Culture, and Parks Master Plan. “The new Master Plan will

guide how recreation, culture, and parks services are delivered and infrastructure is provided over the next ten years,” said David Leavers, Director of Recreation, Culture, and Parks. “The Township has grown and changed since the last Plan was completed in 2002 and we will use this tool to help us learn what our residents feel is most important.” To get the conversation started, the portal is asking residents what their favourite ways are to enjoy recreation, culture, and parks in the Township of Langley. “Consultation with the community is critical to the develop-

Community partners, organizations, and residents will have opportunities to share their thoughts and ideas, he said, and a telephone survey and online survey will be held in the coming weeks. “Speakup.tol.ca is another way of gathering crucial input,” Leavers said. “We hope people make good use of it.” Residents can respond to topics and contribute to Speak Up discussions by signing up with their name, email, and a password.

Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches

Family Nights at the Fire Halls

The Township of Langley currently utilizes three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mowers for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes, or an assigned area to follow. Should the equipment be pulled away to do a specific request it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches.

A chance for children to visit a fire hall, meet their local firefighters, and even sit in a fire truck will be offered this month when the Township of Langley Fire Department holds its Family Nights at the Fire Halls.

If you have a request for mowing or brushwacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible.

Class A ditches are fish bearing; Class B ditches are fish habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed.

During the free open houses, visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras, take a tour, and enjoy a hands-on look at what it is like inside the community’s fire halls.

Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and require notification only for work to take place.

The fun, educational Family Nights will be held:

Therefore, how or when a ditch is cleaned will depend on its classification. We thank you for your understanding as we operate under these requirements.

Japanese Knotweed Roadside Control Strategy The Township of Langley is working to eliminate the threat of this invasive plant. You may see markers along various roads identifying where Japanese Knotweed is located. Do not remove the plants or mow these areas. Improper removal of the plant could result in the plant reproducing rapidly or spreading further.

Calling all residents! The Township of Langley is interested in hearing from you! Residents of the Township of Langley are being surveyed as part of the process to create a new Recreation, Culture, and Parks Master Plan. A telephone survey is being conducted in the first two weeks of June. If you get a call, please share your thoughts. An online resident survey will also be available for those Township residents who did not provide their feedback in the telephone survey. Please visit the Township of Langley’s website at tol.ca to access the online resident survey. The online survey will be available June 15 and will run until early July. For more information about the Master Plan process please contact:

Lactating mothers urged to consider donating breast milk Lactating mothers are urged to consider donating some of their milk to help others who aren’t able to breastfeed their own babies. Fraser Health has opened 10 new human milk donation depots at public health units in Hope, Agassiz, Mission, Langley, Cloverdale,

Guildford, North Surrey, New Westminster, Port Moody and Burnaby, in addition to existing ones in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Maple Ridge. Women who have been screened can collect breast milk at home, freeze it and donate it at those locations.

It’s transported to the provincial milk bank at BC Women’s Hospital where it’s pooled, processed and pasteurized. Most of the donated milk goes to feed premature and sick babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) who are at high risk of illness and infection.

ACE-IT: Aldergrove Secondary recruits carpentry apprentices By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Senior high school students in Langley are invited to sign up for the carpentry apprenticeship program at Aldergrove Secondary school. The “ACE-IT program offers students a college-level course that would normally cost $2,800 at no charge to the right applicants. “It’s a level 1 carpentry apprenticeship over 20 weeks — a semester — that provides theory and technique, as well as job site safety certification and WHMIS certification, said Aldergrove Secondary instructor Andy Gaumont. “On successful completion students receive four to five course credits as well. With these qualifications the apprentices are able to work in the field for a couple of years after they find an employer who will indenture them, then take their level 2 course over a six-week period. The next session begins in February 2015 and runs to June, and Aldergrove Secondary has room for 18 apprentices. There are other ACE-IT programs offered in Langley School District for such trades as plumbing but it’s the only carpentry program offered by Langley. There are six similar programs offered in the Lower Mainland. To apply and schedule an interview for the carpentry apprenticeship program call Aldergrove Secondary school at 604-856-2521.

Bringing the Heat

Final countdown: Less than 100 days remain until B.C. Seniors Games By GARY AHUJA Black Press

Cody Whitford of the Aldergrove Sox brings the heat as he delivers a pitch during his team’s game against Chilliwack at Aldergrove Athletic Park on Friday, June 6.

Looking for a Bright Worker?

The best way to keep in touch with your culture, is to respect and listen to your elders. Those were the words of Kwantlen First Nations’ elder Kevin Kelly. “We pay respect to our seniors; it is very important, our elders are our teachers,” he told the crowd at Fort Langley’s Bedford Landing last week (June 5). “Always take the time to talk to your elders. If you don’t, you lose your culture.” The crowd was on hand to mark the unofficial countdown to the B.C. Seniors Games, which are less than 100 days away from beginning. The Games run Sept. 9 to Sept. 13 and are being co-hosted by the City and the Township. The ceremony concluded with the lightning of the Games’ torch as Cheryl MacIntosh — the Township’s volunteer of the year and a member of the Fort Langley Canoe Club — passed the torch to Langley MLA Mary Polak, who then lit the Games’ cauldron. The torch was brought to the ceremony via dragon boat by members of the Fort Langley Canoe Club along the Fraser River. “We will light this torch as a symbol of this community’s pride in hosting the Games,” said Jim

Recruit the right Candidate here…

McGregor, who served as emcee of the ceremony. More than 4,000 athletes ages 55 and up will compete at the Games, with an expected $2.5 million economic impact generated, said Milt Kruger, the president of the Games’ organizing committee. “’Everybody wins’ is not about individual victories,” he explained about the Games’ slogan. “It is everyone who is involved — the participants, the businesses in Langley, the community,

the volunteers.” “It is going to show what the Langley’s are all about, and what we are capable of,” said Polak. Volunteers are still needed for the Games. So far, 400 have signed up and Kruger said they are hoping to get 1,800 volunteers altogether. Aldergrove’s Joel Waterman will be staying close to home as he joins the Trinity Western Spartans men’s soccer team for the fall. Waterman was announced as one of the seven new players set to join the Spartans for the 2014 season. “I think everyone is excited about the players that we’re bringing in,” said Trinity Western coach Pat Rohla. “I’m delighted with who we have signed, with both their ability and character. There’s no way we could pass on any of these players and they will all fit in well in a Spartans uniform.” Waterman, a six-foot-one midfielder, brings size to the Spartans and will immediately bolster TWU’s midfield. This past fall, Waterman captained the Aldergrove Totems to the school’s first-ever AA Fraser Valley championship banner, which was followed by a seventh-place finish at the provincial championships. He has been a mainstay with Surrey United since 2010 and is currently playing with the club’s U18 side. He has also represented Team BC at the 2013 Canada Summer Games, helping win silver. “Joel has gotten stronger this past year and has really come into his own,” Rohla said. “He can move the field and go box-to-box. He can pass, he’s brave and he’s smart. He will add incredible depth and versatility and will become a very good Spartan if he continues his current trend of growth in the game.” “After researching many universities, TWU remained my top post-secondary choice, as it just felt right,” said Waterman, who plans to study human kinetics. “The coaches really care about their players as athletes and, more importantly, as people. Trinity Western is a top-ranked university that offers great athletic and academic programs and to play CIS level soccer in my own community is a bonus. I am very thankful for this opportunity and look forward to becoming a Spartan.” The other recruits joining TWU are strikers Eric Dove (Port Coquitlam), Leighton Johnson (Calgary) and Vito Poletto (Calgary), midfielders Elijah Adekugbe (Calgary) and Matthew Roxburgh (Surrey) and defender Austin Kasian (Calgary).

In 2014, UFV turns 40. As we celebrate our history, we also dream of growing innovation locally and beyond. We can only do this together with you.
