‘Ordinary man,’ not a monster Lawyer argues child-porn lover is not a danger to the public BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

tried to restrict it in certain areas, which is, essentially, the Chilliwack approach. City staff have created a complicated criteria to figure out where longboarding will be allowed. To start with, it is prohibited on all arterial and collector roads. As to local roads, there is a complex calculus to determine if the road in question is subject to prohibition or if the sport will be permitted. To be permitted, the road has to have traffic volume of fewer than 3,000 vehicles per 24 hours and have visibility greater than 65 metres. If the road width is less or greater than 8.5 metres and whether
ohn Patrick Davy’s lawyer painted a picture on an ordinary man—a successful, intelligent educator—who happened to have a terrible secret that has destroyed his life. That secret is that he collected, watched and distributed child pornography. Lawyer Martin Finch spoke about Davy’s plight in Chilliwack Provincial Court last Friday on the final day of a protracted sentencing hearing for the former Greendale elementary school teacher. Davy pleaded guilty on Feb. 19 to possession and distribution of child pornography after he was found with more than 27,000 digital child porn images, and 866 videos. “The perception in the community is that my client is somewhat of a monster,” Finch told the court. “Aside from that secret, he was a very ordinary man.” Finch called Davy an “immensely popular and capable teacher” who was committed to his students and to his profession. Arrested, charged and released under strict conditions last year, he was then found in Kelowna on Sept. 12 with a computer that had more than

Longboarders say new restrictions won’t keep them off popular roads
N
ew restrictions on longboarding quietly introduced in the City of Chilliwack will have little effect on the sport, according to those involved. Jackson Vanderveen and Nick Hurley, both sponsored by The Truth Skate & Snow, say new prohibitions on the sport on some of the most popular streets doesn’t mean they’ll stop, even if that means fines. “It’s just unfortunate because, regardless, this is what we do, this is what we love to do and we are probably still going to be skateboarding
on the roads,” the 20-year-old Hurley said. Hurley and Vanderveen chatted with the Times on Weeden Drive on Promontory on June 2 where they were skating. Weeden is one of the most popular longboarding hills for the freeriding style, where skaters slide and turn trying not to put their hands on the road. Weeden is also one of four roads where recreational longboarding is now prohibited. The issue over longboarding in the city has been considered by staff and the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) for some time. Increased activity over the years, coupled with highly publicized
incidents involving injury and even death in other communities, prompted the city to act. On Jan. 20, 17-year-old Ryan Thomas Wallace-Tarry died after he was hit while skateboarding by an oncoming flatbed truck in Nanaimo. On Jan. 2, a 16-year-old boarder also died in the Comox Valley. Most recently, on June 2, 11-yearold Dustin Mackenzie died of the injuries he sustained while longboarding without a helmet in Abbotsford two days before. Some municipalities, such as West Vancouver, have totally banned the sport. But even there the mayor has conceded it’s difficult to enforce. Others, like North Vancouver, have

Lifetime trading ban Mt. Cheam resort scam leads to $2 million fine for man behind Bigfoot Recreation & Ski Area Ltd. BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com
T
from www.skibigfoot.com
The British Columbia Securities Commission alleges Ron McHaffie used dreams of a ski resort near Jones Lake to defraud dozens of investors.
he man who fraudulently lured investors to give him money for a $300-million ski resort behind Mt. Cheam has received a lifetime trading ban by the B.C. Securities Commission (BCSC) and has been handed a $2 million fine. A BCSC panel found Ronald Stephen McHaffie and BigFoot Recreation & Ski Area Ltd. raised approximately $642,960 from 30 investors through the sales of shares in BigFoot. A website, which has since been taken down, announced the plan to build the ski resort and village at Jones Lake, a dammed reservoir behind the iconic Mt. Cheam.
The commission said McHaffie made false statements to entice investors, including that completion of the ski resort was imminent. Instead, he used money for personal items such as gas, meals, groceries and retail purchases. BigFoot’s proposal was rejected in September 2010, but the BCSC said McHaffie raised an additional $111,070 after that date. The BCSC says it was illegal for McHaffie to sell shares to 27 of the 30 investors, who invested a combined $621,960. The panel ordered McHaffie and BigFoot to pay the $642,960 obtained as a result of contraventions of the security act, in addition to a fine of $2 million.

1,000 child porn images. Davy is being sentenced for a breach of his bail conditions in addition to the child porn possession and distribution. The Crown has asked for two years less a day in addition to time served. He has served approximately 275 in custody so far. Davy is asking for 12 to 18 months in custody including time served. In court on Friday, Finch said that even members of Davy’s family faced a level of “irrational public shame” over the charges. Finch downplayed Davy’s bail breach saying it wasn’t his own fault as he “inadvertently” got the Internet in a bundled package when he ordered TV services after moving to Kelowna. Judge Roger Cutler took issue with Finch’s argument that Davy’s breach was having access to the Internet, not that he did access the Internet or had child porn in his possession. “Aren’t we splitting hairs? He was recommitting the substantive
offence,” Cutler said, adding that Davy has shown “a failure to control himself throughout.” While defence and Crown differ on the length of time Davy should spend in jail, there is also some debate over some of the probation conditions
asked for by Crown counsel Andrea Ormiston. Ormiston suggested that Davy should only have access to the Internet during his probation period to look for work. “The Internet is all pervasive,” Finch
argued, suggesting that many common daily activities, commerce, looking for accommodation, all require the Internet. He even went so far as to suggest at some point in the future, a court’s restriction of Internet access could face a Charter challenge as cru-
Complaints when Davy taught BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

uring his submissions Friday, Finch did slip up when he continued his ongoing argument that Davy only has an addiction to digital images of child porn and in no way has he ever or will he ever “act out” his fantasies in the real world. Finch asserted that despite the fact that Davy taught elementary school for 16 years while having a predilection for child porn, Davy had “never” had anyone come forward with
an accusation that they had been touched. But in 2009, three female Grade 6 students at Greendale elementary did indeed complain about being touched by Davy. Finch later addressed this, stating that he did not wish to mislead the court, adding that neither the school district nor the RCMP found any evidence of wrongdoing. Finch said the accusations come with the territory of being a school teacher, and that “all teachers can be subject to mischievous complaints.” The truth is the RCMP never inves-
tigated in 2009, because school district rejected the student’s complaints after an internal investigation. The mother of one of the girls who alleged Davy touched her told the Times she was threatened by the school district with legal action if she spoke out. “I can’t tell you how frustrating this case is to me due to this and the impact it has had on my daughter even now,” the mother told the Times. “At least this is coming to an end and I hope the girls may find some justice of sorts from his sentencing.”

el and unusual punishment. Cutler disagreed. “Even when he was ordered to not use the Internet he used it for child porn,” Cutler stated, referring to Davy’s breach. Finch also argued that the Crown probation conditions restricting movements and contact were unnecessary. “There is no need for the public to be protected from him because he is not a danger.” Cutler responded with a question: “Would a member of the public feel comfortable with Mr. Davy siting on a park bench watching their children?” Finch responded that they would if they knew the “fulness” of the situation. “If anyone in this community saw him sitting on a park bench, would that cause them some discomfort?” Cutler persisted. “They would not be concerned,” Finch argued. “Should not?” Cutler tried to clarify. “Would not,” Finch said. Judge Cutler is scheduled to hand down his sentence on June 23.

Duo will co-ordinate Fox Run BY DESSA BAYROCK Special to the Times
A
fter a brief and anxious period without a run organizer, the Chilliwack Terry Fox run will have a few familiar faces behind it as participants hit the streets in the fall. Debra Smith and Desmond Devnich will co-co-ordinate this year’s run in Chilliwack, which will take place on Sept. 14. Provincial director Donna White says they couldn’t be happier with their choices. “The nice thing about the Chilliwack event is that it’s an existing event that has a strong hold in the community,” she says. “This is an opportunity to ensure that it continues, and grow the event as well.” Chilliwack residents may recognize Devnich from his other community involvement, including work with Chilliwack’s Downtown Busi-
Smith and Devnich step up ness Association, UFV’s Student Life, Rotaract, and in his current role as constituency assistant to Chilliwack MLA John Martin. “He’s very connected in the community,” White says. “He knows the community, he’s been involved with events in the community, so that’s really great too—when you have those kinds of connections. “ Smith, on the other hand, is a new face in Chilliwack. She hails from Abbotsford and was one of the volunteers who hoped to help plan the Abbotsford run. When the timing didn’t work out for her in her own community, she knew her skills could be put to use elsewhere. “When she saw the posting come up for Chilliwack, she thought, ‘This is it. This is why I didn’t have the time for Abbotsford—I’m really meant
to do this.’” White explains. “I think she’s going to be a really great part of the make-up of the run this year.” And while White says most of the pieces have now fallen into place, she says they’ll always welcome more volunteers. “We’ve got a great committee in place but we will never turn anybody away. If there are people out there who would like to become involved with the planning committee, or perhaps are just interested in coming out on run day, we’re always welcoming people to come on board.” ◗ There will be a volunteer meeting this coming Wednesday, June 18 at 7 p.m. at John Martin’s office at 45953 Airport Rd. in Chilliwack for anyone looking to pitch in or meet Chilliwack’s new run co-ordinators.
Tried to lure young girl with candy
C
hilliwack RCMP are looking for help finding a suspicious male who approached a nineyear-old girl near F.G. Leary Fine Arts school on June 2. The girl was approached between 2:15 and 3 p.m. on First Avenue and McNaught Road. Police say the male persistently asked the child to go with him and
offered her candy in an effort to persuade her. The child rode away on her bike and no further contact was made. “This little girl stood her ground and made it known to this person that she was not going to go with him,” said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Const. Tracy Wolbeck. The male is described as hav-
ing a full beard down to his neck with sideburns and greying hair. He was wearing a red sweater with a white shirt underneath and brown shoes. Police believe the male was driving an older model red van similar to a Dodge Caravan. ◗ To look at a sketch of the suspect visit www.chilliwacktimes.com.

Local Soroptomists open up dialogue on #BringBackOurGirls C
hilliwack might be a long way from Nigeria, but distance doesn’t stop solidarity. This mentality is the push behind the Chilliwack Soroptimist’s event this coming Saturday, where they invite the public to meet and speak about the issues and inequality facing women across the globe.
The gathering is in direct support of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, which urges the international community to work towards finding and rescuing 300 schoolgirls who were kidnapped in Nigeria earlier this year. This meeting of the Chilliwack soroptimists marks two months
since terrorist group Boko Haram attacked a school in the village of Chibok in northeast Nigeria, taking the girls away with them. Some of the girls are believed to be in good health, after Boko Haram recently released a video showing approximately 100 of them in captivity.
However, the soroptimists (as well as other human and women’s rights groups) hope to draw community attention to the remainder of the captives; rumours state some girls may have been abused, killed, or sold as child brides. The soroptimist gathering in Chilliwack will open a dialogue regard-
ing the right to education for all children, regardless of gender or financial standing, and also hear prominent women from the Chilliwack community speak about the rights of girls and women on a global scale. ◗ The gathering in Central Community Park will take place on Saturday, June 14, at 2 p.m., and all are invited to attend and participate.

Sun safety is second nature
◗ Publisher
Canadians love the sun so much, it’s killing us. After being cooped up for months at a time to shelter from the interminable rain, we rejoice at the first days of warm sunshine. By July we’re positively basking in it. Problem is, we don’t like to cover up and we’re loath to slap on some sticky, oily or runny sun screen to protect our skin. And that’s leading to an alarming increase in skin cancer, according to a report released last week by the Canadian Cancer Society, Statistics Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The report says there will be about 6,500 new cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed in Canada this year. That’s the deadliest, most insidious form of skin cancer that will kill more than 1,000 Canadians. Another 76,100 cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will also be diagnosed. Those are less serious and can usually be treated in the doctor’s office. Unlike many other forms of cancer, the incidence of skin cancer is actually going up rather than down. For men, the incidence rate went up two per cent between 1986 and 2010. For women it increased 1.5 per cent. Mortality rates also increased. While it might be a little much to ask people to stay indoors, it’s not a big deal to put on that shirt, roll down those sleeves, slap on that hat and slop on that sunscreen. And pay heed to the UV index that’s become a standard feature of most weather forecasts.

Always two sides to every story
T
he nation’s eyes are on Chilliwack’s cows. It will take years for Chilliwack Cattle to get over the public relations pickle the company is now in. The farm’s owners, the Kooyman family, tout it as a local, family farm. It is also Canada’s largest dairy factory farm. After the video showing vicious beatings of cows was made public, the Kooymans’ initial statement came not from the “family farm” itself but from a Surrey-based crisis management company. A cynic might note that while the Kooymans speak of being responsible, local, dairy producers, they first placed the health and welfare of 3,500 cows in the hands of eight abusive teenagers, and then they outsourced their apology to a PR firm. So what of those mostly teenagers, now facing criminal charges for the unmistakable abuse caught on camera by an undercover agent working for the vegan-lifestyle promoting non-profit group Mercy for Animals? One of the alleged culprits said on Twitter that there were two sides to the
PAUL J. HENDERSON @peejayaitch story. I told him that I’d love to hear his side. “I have no comment unless you are a farmer thanks,” @Lars_Daddy replied. He and others faced a backlash from their peers on Twitter during a backand-forth on Monday evening. “You don’t need to work on a farm to know wrong from right. And I do know what goes on thank you,” @alanakauppi tweeted. “I’m not saying it was right or wrong I’m saying there’s 2 sides of this,” @ Lars_Daddy responded. Other possible participants in the abuse, or at least supporters of those involved, had lots to say on Twitter. From @KyleTLinza: “People watch a 4 minute video and all of a sudden there expert farmers #getyourfactstraight #youknownothing.”
And “People should learn the real sorry before they start talking like they know whys going on #medialies.” The media lied? I asked this young man to expand but he didn’t respond. From @McCandless15: “Just gunna have a glass Of milk to cool down from this riot #wow #everyonehasadifferentview” and “...never said it was ok ? It’s brutal ! But I’ve seen more f--ked up sh-t on other farms.” Some more nuanced messages were sent out by @bradgenereux14: “If you want to save the way factory farms and animals are treated stop supporting them by drinking and eating the animal products.” And: “It’s pretty interesting seeing people put all the blame on 8 guys from a farm that’s been training and operating in this ways for years.” Really? That’s how Chilliwack Cattle have been training and operating for years? Jeff Kooyman says the company did not know about the abuse and he has expressed shock and disgust. Former supervisor Jamie Vissers, however, told CTV News that the Kooymans
knew “80 per cent of what was going on.” And while I am not in the business of crisis management, I wonder if the Kooymans and their hired PR guns have thought their strategy through. The plan seems to be to feign ignorance of the abuse, fire the teenagers, some of whom are probably children of friends and neighbours and all of whom are savvy social media users who might hold a grudge. Some of these young men will defend their actions, maybe even defend the company, but their employer threw them under the bus. These men may just lash back when they realize they’ve been hung out to dry. And if this goes to trial, they may even have members of the Kooyman family testify against them. The Kooymans are scrambling the best way they know how on high-priced PR flacks. Fired teenagers are scrambling the best way they know how using social media to say this was normal practice, they were trained this way and the company knew what was going on. Who do you believe?

‘Less work’ a specious argument ➤ LETTERS

Something has to give in size debate Editor: I am quite sick of people accusing teachers of wanting more pay for less work. Clearly, John Elmore hasn’t been in a classroom for a while, and I’m guessing he has no personal interest in the stability of our school system. This further proves his ignorance, and that of others with the same mindset. A failing school system affects us all. We will not be able to successfully function as a society if the future generations are ill-equipped to manage, work, or contribute to it. Teachers are not asking for more money and less work. They are asking for more support and better resources so that they can get their actual work done. More time teaching the entire class, less time dealing with individual student issues. The fact is that all students are suffering. Gifted students are not being challenged to their fullest potential. Mediocre students have no opportunity to improve. Special needs students can’t even get assessed. Every classroom deals with disruption on a daily basis because there aren’t enough resources or support staff to give special needs and high risk students the skills they need to learn. Segregation wasn’t effective when I was a kid, and integration cannot be effective in a classroom of 28-plus kids and only one teacher. Something’s got to give, and I don’t know a single teacher who thinks that putting in less time is it. Justine Hodge Chilliwack
Grow up and get back to the table Editor: An open letter to the government of B.C., BCTF and BCPSEA. This won’t be news to you—the system is broken. As a parent of five children who are currently part of the public education system in
some way, I know first-hand it is an imperfect system of education. And I believe that the bargaining tactics on both sides are ridiculous. I understand that there are always two sides to every issue. I know money has to come from somewhere and no matter what we do, we have limitations on that. I understand many of the classroom issues that exist. They were there when I was in school. I have seen both of my parents struggle as teachers in this system to deal with these many issues and try to support the children in their classrooms. I have experienced the frustrations as a parent dealing with the inadequacies that exist. My two oldest children are in high school and one is graduating this year. In fact, tonight is convocation. I expect that will be run by administration, just as awards night was because the teachers aren’t allowed to attend. Some of the teachers would love to do it and whether you blame it on the union or the government it’s all the same. The kids are the ones truly suffering. Having a few activities cancelled and other things changed have been a minor inconvenience, but last night when I heard that there would be a third strike day and vote on a full scale walkout, I felt I had reached my limit. My oldest is 18 and wants to finish high school and move onto other things. Jeopardising his exams and preparation time goes over the line. And if you think a tantrum like this goes over well with me, you’ve got to be joking. I know tantrums when I see one. I have five spirited children and this is classic. Grow up! When are we going to get people sitting down and really trying to do something to solve the problems? Pouring in more money is never the full answer. Why don’t we consider looking at places where they are having success? Let’s get educated on what could actually make a difference. During my children’s time in the public system, we have experienced at least three strikes in some form. None of them have made a difference. Both cuts and more funding, none of that makes a difference. Some real serious change is necessary. And to the union, if you think that punishing children and parents until they start complaining is going to give you a voice, maybe some people will back you but there are a lot of parents who don’t. We are annoyed, frustrated and think you are playing nasty. And don’t be surprised by more parents { See LETTERS, page A22 }

Editor: In response to John Elmore: “More money for more teacher work,” Times, June 5. I’m guessing you have never taught when you state that “the demand for smaller classes and more teaching assistants is really a demand for less work.” The demand for smaller classes and more help is to create a better learning experience for the students. It has been reported in the media and several studies have concluded that having smaller class sizes does not show statistical differences in student achievement. Studies and tests that focus on standard achievement don’t measure important intangibles. Students that are struggling to meet expectations in reading, writing, and math at their grade level often benefit the most from the individual attention of their teacher. The more students you add to a class, the less individual attention can be given to each student. The more individual attention a teacher can give a student who is struggling to meet grade level expectations, the better the chance that student has to catch up to his or her peers. Improvements made by struggling students would be unlikely to show any statistical significance on a standardized test, as these students are often just trying to stay afloat. But to the overall progress of these students, having more individual time with their teacher is vital. Until the recent lockout, I hosted a homework club in my classroom once a week after school for 45 minutes. The three or four students I worked with in this short time learned more and improved in these homework club sessions than they would in the class-wide lessons and work periods for a whole week. When I had the time to work closely with these students and monitor their work, they flourished. There is no way to give them this kind of attention in a full classroom. Obviously, we can’t have a classroom with just five students, but this example highlights the real reason teachers want smaller class sizes and more support. It has nothing to do with “less work.” It’s a simple fact: the more students you stuff into a classroom means the teacher will have a little less individual time to focus on each student. The students that are meeting or exceeding grade level expectations can often get by with less individual help and interaction, but the students that are struggling just fall further behind. People have always sought meaning and purpose BY CURTIS FAST Yarrow MB Church
I
believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God recorded by people. This opens up many good questions, such as: Is it possible that people got it wrong? How were the people inspired, or were they really inspired? There are many very good questions, but today I would like to deal with the question, “are a bunch of scrolls written thousands of years ago relevant to us in 2014?” In Acts 17:16-34 the apostle Paul went to the city of Athens. At first glance the culture of Athens seems nothing like what we live in today; I don’t even own a tunic or a loin-
cloth, let alone would I feel comfortable walking around town in one. But upon further inspection, even though their music, clothing, food, and housing were different from ours, they wrestled with many of the same questions about life that we wrestle with today. Paul was travelling from city to city telling people about Jesus and the resurrection. When he came to Athens he found that “all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.” Some philosophers then took him to speak before their local council at Mars Hill so he could share his ideas with them. In this passage there are four dif-
ferent worldviews that meet together (Greek, Epicurean, Stoic, and Christian) to discuss life and the existence of God. This is one thing that makes their culture similar to ours, and the Bible relevant to us. People have always sought meaning and purpose for their lives. In Chilliwack we have Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, and people of many other philosophies, religions, and worldviews. In that sense we are just like the city of ancient Athens—one main difference being that I’m sharing my thoughts to you via this newspaper article and not in front of city council. When Paul spoke in Athens some of the people heard his message and
thought that he was crazy, but others thought he made a lot of sense. I believe that the same message Paul spoke is relevant today, and the message is this: There is a God in the universe, He exists outside of time and space, and He is very creative. He created the world, darkness and light, and to everything He brought life. Then He created you. He saw his creation and said that it was good. God loves His creation. Unfortunately, we didn’t always love Him in return, but God kept trying to reach us. After generations of us not reaching back, God sent his son Jesus Christ. Jesus healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, forgiveness of sins,

and comfort to the heartbroken souls of the world. Jesus brought life and for that He was killed. He was ruthlessly beaten and hung on a cross to die. If things were to end there, this would be a sad story, but it is not . . . . Jesus was sinless and sacrificed his life for us, then rose from the grave so that we can live eternally. { LONGBOARD, from page A1 } or not there is on-street parking adds more variables. Using the criteria, longboarding is now prohibited on four out of the five most popular streets: Elk View Road, Teskey Way, Promontory Road and, where Vanderveen and Hurley were skating recently, Weeden Drive. One neighbour on Weeden, who didn’t not to give his name, said he thought longboarding was too dangerous on the road, and he supported the restrictions. Weeden resident Kim Mallory agreed. “I would say that it’s a really, really dangerous place to play,” she said. “They’ve always been fairly respectful of traffic but it’s just not safe. I agree that it should be prohibited on Weeden Drive.” Somewhat ironically, the new restrictions instituted by city hall are actually less restrictive to the sport than what existed previously. That’s because while the new policy prohibits longboarding on specific roads, it also permits the sport on some roads. And if not instituted, longboarding was technically already a violation of the city’s highway and traffic bylaw, which states that “no person shall . . . engage in any sport, amusement, exercise or occupation on any highway which may delay the passage of traffic or cause any obstruction.”
Surprised it wasn’t a straight-out ban Vanderveen and Hurley are right (Of course this means that, and their practices generate no technically, street hockey is also a friction with residents, then they bylaw violation.) are doing nothing wrong. The As with road hockey, if
sport peaked as a fad a few years back, when Vanderveen and Hurley said lots of young kids would come out to Weeden, swear and leave garbage and generally be a nuisance to neighbours. Fewer kids are into the sport now, they say, and most residents aren’t worried about safety or the dangers of longboarding itself, it’s the swearing and the garbage. “No that all the kids are gone, that’s disappeared,” Vanderveen said. “I was kind of surprised it didn’t happen earlier and it wasn’t a straight-out ban, to be honest.” Vanderveen added that most of the better longboarders have a good relationship with RCMP officers in Chilliwack, and he hopes that continues. “The cops in Chilliwack are actually phenomenal compared to everywhere else I’ve heard,” Vanderveen said. Both Hurley and Vanderveen are thankful the city took a measured approach to permit skating in some places, but they don’t like being picked on for trying to do their sport. “Would you rather I was inside playing video games, smoking dope, drinking?” Vanderveen said. “This is what I enjoy doing and I can’t change what I like to do just because you don’t like it.”

Remembering Stan Rogers Chilliwack Chess Club holds special memorial tourney BY DESSA BAYROCK Special to the Times
I
t’s time to break out the knights and pawns: Chilliwack will sport its first chess tournament of living memory on June 21 at the Little Beatle Bistro on Sumas Road. The Chilliwack Chess Club (3C) has had the tournament in the works since the beginning of the year, but 3C co-organizer Lorne Kay says the most important detail was one that fell into place only recently: the decision to dedicate the tournament to 3C member Stan Rogers, who died suddenly this spring. Holding the tournament in his honour was a natural choice for the club. “Stan was so excited and enthused about it—he supported it and promoted it, and he was an active player for quite a few years,” Kay says. “We were going to have a chess tournament anyways
because that’s what Stan wanted to do . . . Stan was so good at playing chess, and so much fun at it.” The tournament has a simple structure: there are spots for 30 players, who will attempt to make their way to the top of the roster over five rounds. All ages and levels of experience are welcome; there are a variety of prizes up for grabs, including “Biggest Upset” and “Best Game,” meaning players don’t have to be pros to win a spot in the standings. Kay says the the club has already mustered 12 players for the day-long tournament, and hopes they can recruit a few new players to the club—which not many people seem to know about. “We take over Waves Coffeehouse every Friday night,” Kay says with a laugh. “We’re loud and raucous, we’re bellicose, we’re cat-calling—it’s a great time.” The Chilliwack Chess Club inaugural Stan Rogers Memorial Tournament starts at 10 a.m. on June 21 at the Little Beatle Bistro. Registration is $20, and players can preregister by emailing chilliwackchess@ shaw.ca or may register at the door between 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. the day of the tournament. Bystanders are more than welcome to drop by and watch.

f you’re still looking for ways to express fondness for the father in your life, consider handing him a fishing pole and sending him down to Cultus Lake for the day to compete in the Annual Cultus Lake Pikeminnow Fishing Derby. As an added bonus, there’s no fishing licence required for the day of the contest, which runs from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking is free for those who get there before 9 a.m. meaning the only cost for an early bird is the ticket, set at $7 for adults and $3 for kids under age 16. There are a variety of cash prizes up for grabs, including for heaviest pikeminnow, most pike minnow, and mys-
tery weight. Every entrant automatically gets their name in a draw food a variety of door prizes, and get an additional entry for every pike minnow caught. ◗ Tickets and more information are available online at www.fraserbasin.bc. ca under news and events, or at Fred’s Custom Tackle, Chilliwack Dart & Tackle, Kent Outdoors, and Cultus Lake Golf Club Pro Shop. Tickets are also available the day of the derby at the beach. The derby takes place on Saturday, June 14, and fishing starts at 6 a.m. at Main Beach. Cobras claim Peewee A Division title
The Cobras, from Chilliwack Minor Baseball Association, are the winners of the Peewee A Division. They also took gold in the River Rush Tournament in Mission earlier this year. Pitching led the way to wins all year with Brenden Goldsworthy, Tyler Mendonca, Jackson Saunders and Brett Fehlauer. Saunders hitting a home run brought the final score to 15-2. Great infielding by Brett Fehlauer held back numerous chances for the other team to score.

GG silver medal winner works magic in classroom and on court
N
icole Wierks may be the most well-known student graduating from the University of the Fraser Valley this year. She earned that fame as a leader of the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team that stormed its way to a third-place finish at the national championships in March 2014. But did you know Wierks is also an excellent student? In fact, she excels academically to such an extent that she is graduating from UFV as the Governor General’s silver medalist. The silver medal is given to the student graduating from an undergraduate degree program with the highest grade point average (GPA) over their last 30 credits. A perfect GPA is 4.33 and that is what Wierks achieved in that time frame. In fact, she has had nothing but perfect A+ grades over the last five semesters of her university career. And over the course of her five years at UFV, her cumulative GPA is a near-perfect 4.23. Wierks, who lives in Chilliwack, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology. She also took many kinesiology courses on the way to earning her degree. As she made her way on her academic journey, medical school became her goal. She applied to three medical schools this year, and was accepted to all three. Because she likes the idea of staying close to family and in beautiful

Chilliwack native Nicole Wierks is the Governor General silver medal winner. BC, she will be working towards becoming Dr. Wierks at the University of British Columbia. Throughout her university career, Wierks has balanced academics and athletics at a high level, while also incorporating volunteer work and coping with long-term injuries. After battling back from a torn ACL injury in Grade 11, she wasn’t even sure if basketball was in her future, but then UFV coach Al Tuchscherer came calling. “I knew playing basketball and going to university would be a lot of work and it was a big decision,” she recalls. “I knew I could either quit or do something special with the gifts I had been given.”
To UFV’s benefit, she chose to strive for success on the floorboards and in the classroom. Much of her studying was done on bus rides, in hotel rooms, and in airport lounges as she travelled the country playing basketball for the UFV Cascades for five seasons. For those five years life was basketball and studies, with a little time left over for friends and family. “Basketball players don’t have much free time. Other people might be starting their homework at 4 pm, and we typically wouldn’t start until 9 or 10 at night. My down time was spent with the team, and we all knew how important it was to keep up with the academic side.”

› Letters { LETTERS, from page A9 } pulling their kids out to go to private schools or homeschool because you know what, they are tired of garbage like this and want something that works for their children. But just maybe that will solve the problem. If you lose enough students, the government could afford those pay raises you want and there might be smaller classrooms. Oh, but wait, all those extra teachers we won’t need are going to get laid off and then they aren’t going to be too happy with you either. So, to all involved, get back to the table and be serious about doing something to improve education. Be open to new ideas instead of insanely sticking to what has always been done before. Please be willing to help our children gain an education that they deserve. Colleen Porteous Chilliwack
He agrees it’s time to roar Editor: I don’t know Molly Armstrong but I sure admire her. She is “Momma Bear” and I agree with her suggested approach to the teachers’ strike. I also encourage her to get the “Papa Bears” involved as well. We are not dealing with humans when we deal with the provincial government, we are dealing with cyphers. They have a totally corporate attitude, despite the fact that they are called the Liberal Party. They are about as liber-
al as Mussolini. They are thinking in terms of dollars and cents, profit and loss, and someone in a suit has told them to keep pushing the teachers until they break. It makes fiscal sense to them no matter what the outcome. However, teachers are not cyphers and neither are the children they teach. They are real, live human beings. The teachers have devoted their lives to educating our children, and there is nothing more important than that. How can you put a pricetag on the future of British Columbia? How can you deny special needs children their place in the sun by class sizes that are way to big? How can you short change the future leaders of this province by denying the teachers a decent wage and a efficient workplace. Yes, let’s all get together with Molly “Mama Bear” and roar. Roar so loud that the suits in Victoria will hear the voices of the people for a change, instead of a political agenda. Mama Bears and Papa Bears unite. Let’s change the way things work in this province and have real democracy for a change. Jerry Riches Chilliwack
used this tragic event as “proof” that we should eliminate all gun controls in Canada. It is evident that many people have no understanding at all as to why some people crack and do such things. Such people come out with the idiotic statement
that “guns don’t kill people, people do.” Canadians unfortunately are greatly affected by the rampant gun culture that emanates from the United States, where we often see more killings in one large city in a year than we do in all of
Canada. Gun ownership in the U.S. is central to their view of the world. Not only is it guaranteed in their Constitution (unlike Canada), but many Americans feel the need to own several guns in their homes. Some buy into the con-
spiracy theories that the “government” may some day try to take away their liberties. We next need to educate the public to see that firearm registration is a needed tool to ensure that our police forces have a handle on
gun ownerships. Those law-abiding hunters have nothing to fear in knowing that their police forces know that they have a gun. The police can then focus their attention on the criminal element. Dick Harrington Chilliwack
Something has to give Editor: There has been much attention placed on the recent tragic shootings of RCMP officers in Moncton and similiar killings in the United States. I was amazed to hear that a rifle association in Canada had immediately

Father’s Day may be best spent taking in a sporting event, especially if Dad is a big sports fan. Father’s Day may be an afternoon free of obligations and deadlines. A relaxing day in the yard swimming laps in the pool or hitting a few grounders to your waiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give Father’s Day a truly perfect ending. ◗ Impromptu party: Some dads
like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger
foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function. Plan a Father’s Day celebration with your dad in mind. Cater to his favourite activities and opt for entertainment that he will enjoy.

Make Father’s Day more enjoyable for dad
ad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and award him with gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. Father’s Day activities should be centered around Dad’s interests. With that in mind, the following are some ideas to honor Dad or another special man in your life. ◗ Sports Sunday: If Dad is a sports fan, his idea of spending a fun-filled afternoon very well may be cheering on his favourite players. Whether your father enjoys golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, or another sport like hunting or fishing, chances are there is a television broadcast on that you can watch together. Otherwise, you can surprise Dad by purchasing tickets to a sporting event and making a day of it at the ballpark. ◗ Beach bound: A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favourite foods and a cold beverage, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet. * Adventure seeker: If yours is a father who enjoys living on the edge, a Father’s Day activity built around action and adventure should be a winner. Take Dad base jumping, rock climbing, scuba diving, or race car driving. Any of these activities is bound to get Dad’s adrenaline pumping. ◗ R&R: Dad’s idea of the perfect

Celebrate dad and some history on Father’s Day
F
ather’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most driving force behind Father’s Day was Senora Dodd, who thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Dodd wanted to honor the sacrifices that fathers make. Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act officially designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Families celebrate Father’s Day in many ways. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history buffs may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are just some of the many historical events that took place on June 15. ◗ 1752: Ben Franklin performs his famous kite-flying experiment to test the electrical power of lightning. ◗ 1775: George Washington is appointed Commander in Chief of the American Army. ◗ 1878: The first attempt at a motion picture takes place. Twelve cameras, each taking one picture, focus on hors-
“Potatoe.”
es’ hooves to see if they will leave the ground. ◗ 1887: The New York Giants baseball team beats the Philadelphia Phillies 29 to 1. ◗ 1916: The Boy Scouts of America receives its congressional charter. ◗ 1918: An inch of snow falls in northern Pennsylvania. ◗ 1924: Native Americans are proclaimed U.S. citizens. ◗ 1934: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is dedicated. ◗ 1940: France surrenders to German forces as Nazi troops occupy the city of Paris. ◗ 1968: John Lennon and Yoko Ono plant an acorn at Coventry Cathedral. ◗ 1977: General elections are held in Spain for the first time since 1936. ◗ 1985: The Russian space probe Vega 2 lands on Venus. ◗ 1992: Vice President Dan Quayle famously misspells the word “potato” at a spelling bee. ◗ 2002: An asteroid misses hitting Earth by 75,000 miles. ◗ 2003: The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets to win the NBA Championship. ◗ 2012: President Barack Obama indicates the United States will stop deporting some illegal immigrants. ◗ 2013: An estimated 40,000 residents of Piedra Negras, Mexico, are devastated by flooding.

BC gave a boost to a literacy initiative of Chilliwack Learning Society (CLS) recently. A team of five RBC employees chose the Ladybug “Read While You Wait” program to receive a $1,000 grant and volunteered their time on June 4 under RBC’s Day of Service program. The Ladybug program places gently-used quality books for children of all ages in bins painted like ladybugs. Across Chilliwack, 29 businesses and services host a Ladybug bin in their waiting room. Children with their families enjoy them while they wait. RBC employees Kathy Parker, Jody Edwards, Maggy Jobbagy, Alisha Beune

and Marcie Cyr teamed up with CLS volunteers to visit and thank many of the hosts for supporting family literacy, giving their staff cookies decorated like ladybugs. Children who are exposed to books and family reading do better in school and throughout life. Information for families about local resources and free parent-child programs accompany the bins. CLS volunteers re-stock the bins every six weeks with fresh titles. ◗ The CLS is always looking for enthusiastic people to help with the Ladybug program. Mercy For Animals
This still from a video produced by animal rights organization Mercy for Animals at Chilliwack Cattle Sales shows a man repeatedly kicking a helpless cow in the head.
Video leaves a sour taste T
he abuse is unmistakable and hard to watch. Eight employees of Canada’s largest dairy farm, Chilliwack Cattle Sales, are filmed punching, kicking and beating cows at the Prairie Central operation owned by the Kooyman family. “Woo-hoo!” one employee yells as another in a tractor uses a chain to lift a cow into the air by her neck. “Leave her hanging,” one voice is heard saying. This is where your milk comes from. “I have to say I have worked at the SPCA for 14 years and I have seen the most disturbing videos,” community relations general manager Lorie Chortyk told the Times Monday, “and I have seen nothing that sickened me like this.” The BC Dairy Association (BCDA) was similarly shocked, and was quick to express the sentiment that the abuse at this farm is not the norm. “Organizationally we have a zero tolerance policy around these issues and we feel it vital to assert that this abuse is in no way common practice in our industry,” BCDA chairman Dave Taylor said in a statement. “This event is a black mark in the eye of our industry. Having witnessed the footage, we are deeply shaken.” As for the Kooymans, owners of this the largest dairy farm in the country, they too expressed shock and stated they were “devastated by the thought that animals in our care have been harmed.” “These alleged actions in no way reflect the farming and animal care standards practised by our family or by the dairy industry,” said a statement issued on behalf of the Kooymans by communications firm Orchestra Communications, a company with a specialty in crisis management. The video itself was created by Toronto-based animal rights organization Mercy For Animals (MFA), which works to promote vegetarianism and veganism. MFA had an investigator get hired on as an employee at Chilliwack Cattle Sales. He or she worked from May 1 to 30, and authorities were contacted while the investigation was underway, according to Twyla Francois, director of investigations. Francois could not say whether MFA had any other investigators working undercover at dairy operations or animal farms in Chilliwack.
PAUL J. HENDERSON @peejayaitch She said Chilliwack Cattle Sales was not directly targeted, but locations are chosen randomly with investigators applying for jobs and working with whoever hires them. MFA doesn’t accept the industry and company claims that the incident was an anomaly. “This factory farm was chosen completely randomly, which leads us to believe that cruelty and violence runs rampant in the dairy industry,” Francois told the Times. “Before joining Mercy For Animals Canada, I conducted investigations into Canada’s dairy industry and was horrified by what I saw—emaciated, sick, injured, and even animals unable to stand on their own, were routinely brought to livestock auctions in clear violation of the law. The livestock auction industry even had a term for these cows: C3, which stands for clunkers, canners and cripples.” The video raises a lot of questions: How could the owners have possibly not known about the abuse? If they did know, will they be charged criminally? If they didn’t know, who is doing the hiring and oversight of both animals and employees? There will be defenders of the Kooymans, and critics of an urban Toronto-based animal rights group coming to the eastern Fraser Valley to catch “our” farmers abusing animals, but the video is hard to ignore. Crown counsel in New Westminster is at the stage of reviewing details of the cases and considering charges against eight employees who appeared in the MFA videos. All employees have been fired, but names have not been released. As for avoiding dairy products created in factory farms, that isn’t easy, although most grocery stories carry lines of certified organic dairy. But if you’re interested in products created by standards the BC SPCA has certified as humane, there is only one: Little Qualicum Cheeseworks. Check out their 16 artisan cheeses on Vancouver Island at www.cheeseworks.ca.

If you go Glenda and Rick Standeven: A book signing and conversation at Cole’s Book Store in the Cottonwood Mall June 14 from noon to 4 p.m.
Standing
TALL A third brush with cancer leaves the Standevens strong and spreading awareness further than ever before BY DESSA BAYROCK Special to the Times
M
ore than 20 years after Glenda Standeven lost her right leg to bone cancer, she’s never been more steady on her feet. She made a conscious choice to focus on the positive aspects of recovery, and in 2010, Choosing to Smile became the title of a book she co-authored with close friends Michelle Rickaby and Julie Houlker. All three women fought cancer, adopting a positive philosophy despite the terrifying disease. Now Standeven is back on the book tour, after writing a second book about cancer: What Men Won’t Talk About… and Women Need To Know—A Woman’s Perspective on Prostate Cancer. After her husband Rick was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2006, the couple thought they were through with the disease for good. “We thought, ‘Okay! That’s it! We’re done! One for me, one for you—we’re good.’ But it doesn’t always play fair,” Standeven says. Luckily, they caught the melanoma early— in part thanks to Standeven’s volunteer work with the B.C. Cancer Society. “I’d handed out enough pamphlets to know what the heck that meant and what it looked like,” she says with a laugh. “My experience with cancer saved him. All he needed was surgery, which is so not often the case with most melanoma.” Having both successfully beaten the disease, neither of them expected a third brush with cancer. Again, their experience with cancer protected them from the worst.
Don Healey/Regina Leader Post
The Standevens have been on tour across Canada for the last few months, and the last leg of their journey brings them back home to Chilliwack this week. “It was a bit of a shocker for sure,” Standeven says. “I thank my father for that, because he died of prostate cancer in ‘93, and watching his journey I knew what to look for.” She says it would have been easy to miss the signs—the test results that tipped them off to the disease still fell within normal guidelines. “But because he’d been doing the tests annually, we knew the number had doubled from what it was the year before,” Standeven says. The couple’s battle against prostate cancer was relatively quick and painless—Standeven thanks her doctor for being on the ball again and again, glad they caught it before it spread or required radiation treatment. The worst part about fighting the disease, she says, was trying to understand the process. “We had stacks and stacks of literature to go through. It was just way too much,” Standeven says. “All I wanted was one book I could pick up and say, oh, okay—this is what PSA means, and this is what the options are,
and this is how recovery is going to go.” And as the process continued, it slowly dawned on her that the solution was to write that book herself. The result is What Men Won’t Talk About… and Women Need to Know, designed to help both members of a couple recognize identify and deal with prostate cancer. Standeven mixed their personal experience with a basic how-to guide—which was easier said than done. “The first volume was way too much over-sharing,” she says with a laugh. “Poor Rick read it and said, ‘Honey, if you put this out, we’re moving and we’re changing our names.’” A few drafts later, she found a balance between information and narrative, using their experience as a way to open the conversation. It explains the treatment process for anyone diagnosed with the disease and ultimately stresses the importance of getting tested—a message the Standevens have taken on their cross-Canada book tour. They’ve visited a plethora of bookstores

and non-profit organizations over the last 10 weeks, from Kelowna to Edmonton. Finally, the couple is heading home, finishing off with a book signing session at the Chilliwack Coles bookstore. They’ll be back in town just in time for Rick and their two sons to participate in the annual Walk for Dad in support of prostate cancer awareness. “It’s the third time my husband’s going to walk it. The first year he did it right after his surgery, and they were dead last. The year after they were not dead last, and this year I know we’re going to see improvement again,” she says. “It’s so heartening to see him getting stronger and better, and walking with his two sons. Coming home to two wonderful, positive events is just perfect timing.” ◗ Glenda and Rick Standeven will be at the Cottonwood Coles on June 14 from noon to 4 p.m. for book-signing and conversation. Both What Men Won’t Talk About and an updated and expanded collection of Glenda’s stories from Choosing to Smile will be available.

The Ryder Lake Ramble, as per usual, offers a chance to get up close and personal with llamas and alpacas, and also adds goats and chickens to this year’s docket. ble, and the lush plants pair with the gourmet lunch to make an unbeatable combo. “I the past we’ve found we have just as many people who come for the lunch and the plant sale as go on the Ramble,” Whitlock says with a laugh. But heading out to the nine other stops on the ramble is also well worth an afternoon’s wander. Whitlock especially recommends Henry Pauls’ award-winning irises, which will be in full bloom.
“It’s like a Matisse painting up the hillside, with a creek running through the middle,” Whitlock says. “It’s just a spectacular location.” ◗ The Ryder Lake Ramble runs on June 14 and 15, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday, and ending at 5 p.m. both days. Tickets for the ramble are available at the Ryder Lake Hall at $5 per person or $15 per carload, and more information about tickets and stops is available at www.ryderlakeramble.ca.

hether you come for the llamas, the gardens or the soup, the Ryder Lake Ramble has something for everyone. Peter Whitlock, who has organized the ramble since 2007, says this year’s tour includes two kinds of goats, heritage chickens, award-winning irises, mountain paths, a gourmet lunch and a healthy helping of community spirit—just to name a few aspects. “It means you’re spending several hours with your neighbours and sharing in this,” he explains. “We have a really nice community up here and this just brings everyone together to contribute to it.” About 75 volunteers pitch in to help Ryder Lake really shine for the weekend, and Whitlock says a fair number of residents make a few stops along the tour themselves; it’s a chance to see what’s new in the neighbourhood and touch base with the community as a whole. The majority of visitors up the mountain, however, come from the Valley—a sneak peek into one of Chilliwack’s quietest communities, tucked away into Mount Thom above Promontory. “We often get a lot of people out of the hotels in Vancouver—farmers from Holland and Germany who come out to the valley to see what farming is like in British Columbia,” Whitlock says. And even if you’re not in the mood to wander around the mountain, the gourmet lunch on offer at the Ryder Lake Hall is worth making a trip for: Ryder Lake-based gourmet chefs from Incredible Edibles will be baking cinnamon buns all morning, and have three kinds of soup on simmer for lunch, including spicy vegan squash soup and jalepeno, corn, potato and ham chowder. The hall is also the site of a massive two-day plant sale during the Ram-

Margaret Philps, treasured wife, mother, grandmother, aunt & friend, passed away June 2 in Chilliwack, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her beloved husband George (1990) , and her sister Frances ( 2014). She is survived by her daughter Margaret Paulding, (Rick), cherished granddaughters Rebecca & Sarah, and her sisters Muriel Dionne & Myrtle Philps. She leaves behind many dear friends and family members nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, as well as her life-long friend, Rachel Vallance. Margaret was born in Burnaby in 1918, and attended Edmonds School and Burnaby South High School. She married George Philps in 1941, and was a devoted wife and mother. George returned to school in1963 to study theology, and after his graduation they served together at Gordon Presbyterian Church in Burnaby, where George was the minister from 1966 until 1987. Margaret loved God’s creation, particularly flowers & birds, and one of her favorite pastimes was painting on porcelain. Her family was her greatest joy, and she loved hosting family dinners for all occasions. She had the gift of hospitality, and graciously welcomed family and friends into her home. She gave generously of her time, and loved to shower others with tins of delicious homemade cookies. Her love and encouragement will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her strong faith in God and her unconditional love for all will leave a legacy for generations to come. Special thanks to Dr. Julia Bright for her excellent medical care over the past several years, and for the kindness shown by Dr. Megan Newcombe & the nurses on 5 North at CGH during the last days of Margaret’s life. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 on Sat. June 14, at Gordon Presbyterian Church, 7457 Edmonds St. Burnaby
