First bicycle: “I believe it was a blue Kuhara BMX that I had back in my Winnipeg days.” What are the challenges of being involved in Tour de Rock: “The big challenge is the time commitment. We train three times a week. We do our big ride on Sundays. Last Sunday (June 1) we did 101 kilometres from Comox to Campbell River and back to Comox. And, of course, we never seem to get the beautiful weather! It was wind and hail when we rode up Mt. Washington.” Longest ride before training for the Tour: “I did about 50 kilometres through the Snowden trails on the mountain bike with a bunch of guys from work.” Favourite type of bike: “It’s circumstantial, I guess. For me, it’s the mountain bike, but now that I’m riding back and forth to work every day, it’s definitely the road bike. The other one is a tank…[laughs] I secretly think the two bikes have it out in the garage when I’m not home.”

Are you riding for someone: “Last year I lost my grandmother to cancer. She died on the day the ride came to Campbell River. Some coworkers have also died of cancer. It all worked out for me to do the ride this year. It all aligned.” What are you looking forward to on the Tour: I’m really looking forward to being at Reynolds School in Victoria where we did the launch. It’s an unbelievable event. I’m also looking forward to coming through Campbell River. It’s really nice to have the community support. I’m looking forward to that.” What are you not looking forward to: “The wind and the rain which we always seem to get in December. One time I remember driving up Island, on my way to Bella Bella, and thinking, ‘Who would want to ride in this?’ Now it’s going to be me!”

Barring a contract settlement this weekend, today could be the last day of school for some time unless the province and teachers reach an agreement. Campbell River students were off again on Thursday as part of rotating strike action around the province and returned to class today. However, this week, B.C.’s 41,000 teachers voted 86 per cent in favour of a full-scale strike which will begin Tuesday. The full-scale school strike would begin Tuesday, but there isn’t expected to be any classes on Monday either as members of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation plan to hold a study session day with their union representatives. On Thursday, B.C. Education Minister Peter Fassbender told reporters the government will continue negotiations with teachers this weekend in the hope of reaching an agreement or temporary settlement.

The pub, at Discovery Harbour Mall, is hosting a beer and burger night. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets are $20 available at the RCMP detachment and the Riptide Pub. Since 1998, Tour de Rock has raised almost $20 million to support pediatric cancer research and programs for children through the Canadian Cancer Society. The MV Tenaka was called in to rescue a boat Wednesday. The Tenaka is the BC Ferry that sails between Quadra Island and Cortes Island. Shortly after 3 p.m., the Coast Guard called the captain on the Tenaka and requested their assistance with a 24 foot vessel in distress near Viner Point on Read Island. The vessel’s engine was reported to be overheating and the two passengers were afraid they were going to go on the rocks near Viner Point. The ferry launched a zodiac rescue boat and towed the pleasure craft

In the Comox Valley the province happily hands over $250,000 for four new end-of-life beds at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Meanwhile, in Campbell River, the local hospice society awaits a reply from the premier to follow-up on a promise made last year. “Comox Valley Hospice gets their beds, there’s talk of beds for Parksville and Campbell River seems to get ignored by Victoria,” said Valery Puetz, chair of the Campbell River Hospice Society. On May 22, the society sent a letter to Premier Christy Clark enquiring about a proposal that would include three new end-of-life beds for Campbell River. Last November, Island Health announced it would issue a request for proposals in early 2014, seeking an owneroperator to provide 40 care beds in the city. The

home was supposed to include 31-33 beds for residents who require complex care, 4-6 longstay rehab beds and the three end-of-life beds. On May 5, Island Health issued the request for a new 40-bed care home to be built by 2017, but there’s no mention of three end-of-life (EOL) beds, noted Puetz, just 20 complex care beds and another 20 for people with dementia. “What is of concern… is the apparent lost of the three EOL beds which were promised and which are much needed,” wrote Puetz. “Our society would also like to know where the 4-6 long-stay rehabilitation beds are?” Ideally, local hospice directors would rather

have their own home to care for dying patients, but Puetz said Island Health wants end-of-life beds in facilities under contract by the provincial board. Hospice directors were told the three end-of-life beds would first go into Yucalta Lodge and then moved to a new facility before 2017. Evergreen S eniors Home is c ur rent ly expanding and Puetz said the owners are interested in including hospice palliative suites. However, the request for proposals doesn’t include the end-of-life beds, therefore no pubic funding. If privately-run care homes, under contract to Island Health, do want to

include palliative suites, the cost is picked up by the dying and their families, and Puetz said that isn’t fair. “This creates a system in which those who can afford the cost of a private EOL bed will have access to it, whereas those who are unable to do so will be denied access,” she wrote on behalf the society. The letter asks the premier to respond by June 18, and so far there has not been a reply. On May 30, Comox Valley and Liberal MLA Don McRae, joined with that community’s hospice volunteers to announce the $250,000 provincial grant for four end-of-life beds at St. Joesph’s Hospital in Comox.

Coal drilling proposal makes residents nervous

But that’s not the case, said Gary Gould, vicepresident of Hillsborough which operates the Quinsam Coal mine located approximately 20 kilometres west of Campbell River. “We still need to consult with local communities and First Nations,” Gould said Thursday. “It would be a phased exploration and next summer would be the earliest time we would begin.” For now, Hillsborough has filed a “notice of work” application with the provincial mining ministry and expects to receive a permit to conduct test drilling in the two areas, located 5-8 kilometres southeast of the current mine site. Gould said the initial phase would be five to six drill holes, along and nearby existing logging roads. When the tests are concluded, the holes are filled with concrete and the area is reclaimed.

Hillsborough Resources wants to look for more coal and that’s causing concern for some residents living along the Oyster River watershed. “The area where the test sites are proposed is uphill from the Oyster River and adjacent to Woodhus Creek which flows into the Oyster,” wrote Father Charles Brandt in a letter to the senior inspector of mines. “There is a great deal of water flowing downhill from this area into the Oyster River and private wells through visible streams and underground sources.” The form letter is being signed and circulated by

As we struggle with continual labour management strife, not just between teachers and their employers, our economic competitors in other countries and provinces move ahead with the pedal to the metal. Our educational system may not be the best in the world but it’s crucial that it keeps operating while improvements are considered and implemented. There may be worse times of year for a teachers strike, but there is never a good time for one. The best time for a negotiated settlement to the current impasse...without question, is soon.

Broom removal ‘unacceptable’ As there seems to be a vendetta against the proliferation of the non-native Broom plant, I’m somewhat surprised to find on my walks, especially the trail on Jubilee Parkway, that where this plant has been hacked down, the bushes are then just dumped and left. The reason given for getting rid of this plant is because it prevents the native species from growing as the Broom spreads and chokes other plants out of existence. So is it not counter productive to dump this stuff on top of the plants that are growing in the ditches and along the hedgerow? Last year’s dumped bushes are still there and nothing can grow where they are piled up all along the trail. Apart from anything else, these black piles are unsightly and personally, I would prefer that the things are left alone if whoever chops them down can’t then be bothered to take the bushes away. I don’t care if it’s city workers or the Greenways Trust who leave this waste behind, the fact is these piles of dead and dying bushes must be disposed of in the proper way, doing half the job is unacceptable.

Our city has its “red-headed stepchildren.” You know, the areas that have been abused for years, neglected and most often ignored for reasons long forgotten. In a beautiful city such as ours, coming across these overlooked places is like finding gravel in the middle of your ice cream. Campbellton, of course, takes first prize – or was that last place? – in the redheaded stepchild contest. This Heinz 57 concoction of heavy

industry, commercial, mixed retail and the community’s oldest residential neighbourhood has been made to stand in a dark corner for years, shunned by its socalled caretaker guardians who rule from the city hall highlands. Slowly, over the past decade, after a lot of yelling and screaming – something to the effect of, “This isn’t fair!” – the highlander chieftains have lent an ear and the occasional hand to the lowly red-headed stepchildren. Kind of like watching poor little Oliver begging for more gruel! For the most part, Campbellton gets gruel and the occasional crumb, while a lot of other areas – the Golden Children – get to eat cake on a regular schedule. Yes, that would be YOU Willow Point. Don’t try to deny it, that Golden Child

face and fingers are covered in frosting! From the exquisitely trimmed fields of Willow Point Park to the seemingly weedless gardens along the promenade, it is unquestionably, the pride and joy of the city hall Highlanders. The other new favourite is downtown. In the past, there’s always been a kind of love-hate relationship between downtown and city hall, but the love-in is clearly underway. This new Golden Child is showered with tax breaks and willing servants who make sure the dirty parts are regularly scrubbed and cleaned, lest our new tower of glass reflects the old scars and warts. In a way, I understand the dilemma of the overlords who, really, have a bunch of great-looking “kids,” who have all been playing in the mudflats for too long. It

takes time to wash away the grime and get them all spiffy again, but some receive all the attention while the others get spit. “Well, at least you get spit!” is the complaint I hear now from the city’s latest red-headed stepchild, that being the south end of Dogwood Street. The intersection at Jubilee is becoming an overgrown eyesore even though it’s “liberally decorated” with cigarette butts, weeds growing through concrete and pretty shards of broken glass from accidents past. Even the new water system – for the new trees which replace the first ones that died – never seems to work right and have busted at least twice this spring! But such is the life of the red-headed stepchild who’s lucky to gets the scraps of their siblings’ fine fare.

Area D residents will have one last chance to talk to the city and gather information before casting their vote on whether or not to join the city of Campbell River. The city is hosting a pre-referendum open house on June 16 at Ocean Grove Elementary to provide information on the final proposal and referendum for the city’s boundary extension and sewer service offer for northern Area D.

The city is offering to provide sewer service to 535 Area D properties south of the city limit to McGimpsey Road, on the condition those residents agree to become a part of Campbell River. Residents within the proposed boundary extension area will vote in a referendum Saturday, June 28. Advance polls are scheduled for June 18 and June 24. The city has announced that the referendum question, with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option, will read: “Are you in favour

of a boundary extension to include a portion of Electoral Area D within the boundaries of the City of Campbell River for the purpose of connecting to the City of Campbell River sanitary sewer service?” City Elections Officer Lynn Ketch will oversee the referendum and is expected to be in attendance at next week’s open house to field questions relating to the voting process. Meanwhile, council has approved using the Alternate Approval Process to get support from Campbell River

residents. Coun. Larry Samson said it will be cheaper than the alternative. “ The Alternate Approval Process costs the city, I’ll say minimal or nil dollars, whereas the alternative to this is a referendum for city taxpayers which would put the cost to the city at around $60,000,” said Samson who added he was reluctant to support the boundary extension. “I’d like to get this over and done with.” Mayor Walter Jakeway, who believes the Alternate Approval Process to be undemocratic

GRANT OPPORTUNITY DOWNTOWN FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Interested in updating your storefront or building façade? The City’s Downtown Façade Improvement Program can help get you started! The Downtown Façade Improvement Program provides grants to renovate, restore, or redesign commercial building façades in the revitalization area of downtown Campbell River (see map). PRE-REFERENDUM OPEN HOUSE ON PROPOSED BOUNDARY EXTENSION 5 to 8 p.m. June 16 Ocean Grove Elementary (3773 McLelan Road) Learn about the June 28 referendum (and advance polls June 18 and 24) on the proposal to extend the city boundary and oﬀer sewer service in the northernmost portion of Area D. MORE PARKING DURING PROPERTY TAX TIME If you are coming to City Hall to pay your taxes, we’re making more room for you. From June 16 – July 2 (inclusive) additional public parking is being made available at City Hall. Those coming in to City Hall to make property tax payments are encouraged to park in the larger City Hall parking lot with access oﬀ the Alder street hill leading into and out of downtown. During this time, parking stalls numbered 1-38 and 41-47 will be available for public use. The smaller parking lot at the top of St. Ann’s remains available for public parking but is limited to only 11 stalls. Property taxes and Home Owner Grants are due July 2, 2014.

Property owners are reminded to check tax notices and the water, sewer, and solid waste charges to ensure active or de-activated secondary suites are correctly noted in the user fee calculation. How does my property tax bill compare to the Council-approved rate? Council approves the general levy for the entire City budget, but that doesn’t mean you will see that same percentage change on your tax notice. Many factors influence the taxes on a given property making it different from the overall percentage approved by Council. Each year, some property assessments increase while others decrease, so your property assessment change may or may not be close to the average BC Assessment reports – and your taxes may or may not increase to match exactly with the rate set by Council. Another factor is that the City of Campbell River collects taxes on behalf of other groups (Schools, Hospital, Library, Strathcona Regional District, BC Assessment, and the Municipal Finance Authority). They develop their own budgets outside of the City’s control. The rate passed by Council is only for the levy included on the Municipal – City line that appears on your tax notice. Other charges such as water, sewer, garbage and recycling also appear on your notice, but are not included in the general levy. Things to remember about the Home Owner Grant • Residential property owners can claim the Home Owner Grant without paying property taxes. • Banks and financial institutions cannot claim the home owner grant for you. • Unclaimed Home Owner Grants count as unpaid taxes, and are also subject to a 10% penalty if an application is not filed by the July due date. How to apply for the Home Owner Grant • Go online to www.campbellriver.ca and click on “Payments” under “Online Options” then launch the Home Owner Grant application from the link at the bottom of the screen. Use your access code (called “Access” on your tax notice, beside the folio number). • Apply in person at City Hall 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, except statutory holidays What is the amount of the grant available? For 2014, the maximum: BASIC Home Owner Grant is $770 ADDITIONAL Home Owner Grant is $1,045 ($770 + $275) Note: The Home Owner Grant amount is reduced or eliminated based on property value and minimum property tax payable. Where do I get a grant application? The grant is located on the bottom of your tax notice that will be mailed out at the end of May. If you know your folio number and access code (located on your tax notice), you may claim your grant online through the City website (www.campbellriver.ca). Click on “Payments” under “Online Options”. What are my payment options? Payment methods accepted by the City of Campbell River: • Online banking through your bank • Interac (ensure your daily and/or transaction limit will cover the amount of your payment) • Cheque • Cash

Can I pay by monthly installments? Beginning in August 2014 the City will be able to accept payments made by monthly installment through a direct-debit to your bank account. This year’s property tax notice will include an insert outlining the program and an application form for those who wish to make regular monthly payments towards their annual property taxes. What happens if property taxes go unpaid? The City of Campbell River is governed by the Community Charter which legislates a 10 per cent penalty be imposed on any property taxes that remain outstanding after the July 2, 2014 due date (including unclaimed Home Owner Grants). This legislation does not give authority to the City to waive late penalty charges and is applied consistently to all taxpayers. Your payment and Home Owner Grant application (if eligible) must be received by the City of Campbell River on or before the due date to avoid penalty charges. Grants not claimed or incomplete are considered unpaid taxes and will result in penalty charges. Can I defer my property tax payment? The Province of British Columbia has a tax deferral program, which is available to homeowners aged 55 and older, families with children, and persons with a disability. The Property Tax Deferment Program is a loan program that allows you to defer your annual property taxes on your home. To qualify, you must have and maintain a minimum equity of 25 per cent of the current BC Assessment property value, after deducting the UPPER limit of all outstanding mortgages, lines of credit and other charges on your home. There is a one-time administration fee of $60 for a new approved agreement and an annual $10 renewal fee. For more information, please visit www.sbr.gov.bc.ca (see individuals / property_taxes). What do homeowners get for property taxes paid? In 2014, the average* household in Campbell River will pay approximately $188 per month in taxes, user fees and parcel taxes to pay for more than 100 services such as: • Potable water, sanitary sewers and storm water services • Police and fire protection • Emergency response service • Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection • Road and sidewalk maintenance and repair • Street lighting and traffic control • Recreation facilities including the Sportsplex, Community Centre, Centennial Pool, city parks, tennis courts, ball fields, Discovery fishing pier and the new Splash Park • Planning and building inspection services • Bylaw enforcement • Cultural facility grants for the Tidemark Theatre, Campbell River Museum, Maritime Heritage Centre, Haig-Brown House, Campbell River Art Gallery and the Sybil Andrews Cottage • BC transit service • Campbell River Airport services • Environmental monitoring and management • Economic development, tourism and the Visitor Information Centre *Average residential property value is $256,600. Elector Response Forms (AAP) elector response forms will be accepted only if they are in the form established by the City of Campbell River or an accurate copy of the form. The forms are available at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall and on the website at www.campbellriver.ca starting on Friday, May 30th. For an elector response form to be accepted, it MUST: • Be submitted by a qualified registered elector of the City of Campbell River; • Include the full name of the elector; • Include the residential address of the elector; • Be signed by the elector; • If applicable, state the address of the property in relation to which the person is entitled to register as a non-resident property elector; and • Be submitted to the City Clerk before the deadline. NOTE: a person must not sign any alternative approval process elector response form more than once and may not withdraw his or her name from the elector response form after the deadline for submission of the elector response forms has passed. Deadline The deadline for submitting signed elector response forms opposing the Area ‘D’ boundary extension proposal is no later than 4:00 pm, Monday, July 21, 2014. Elector response forms must be in the possession of the City Clerk by this time, as postmarks WILL NOT be accepted as date of submission. This year was a big one for Education Is Power creator Dave Cuddy. He traveled to Africa, hosted some local fundraisers, and worked with students from Phoenix middle school, as well as both local high schools. Education is Power is a Canadian (EIP) charitable organization that sponsors 35 students attending high school and university in Kenya and Tanzania. With next to no administrative costs, Cuddy runs the organization with a few volunteers. This year EIP worked in conjunction with

local youth to help raise awareness for their cause student for student. “Our main hope is that this education is going to spread. So it’s like our motto ‘to empower one is to empower others.’” Cuddy said. “We mentor our students and give them volunteer opportunities. “Which can be tutoring younger kids, working at a tree nursery planting trees, working at an orphanage. “The goal is that students are giving back while receiving an education. “So we’re hoping to get students on board here, to give them the opportunity of awareness. What is it like to go to school in Kenya or

Tanzania? “And help [students] realize their privileges and use them to help other people.” The organization has been active since 2008 and is currently hoping to take on a bicycle or dorm project to ensure means of transportation for the students in Africa. “We’re researching the idea of helping students get to school at these remote places. So we’re looking to take on maybe one or two students next year, but really we want to ensure we’re making a tangible impact,” Cuddy said. Cuddy will be speaking Sunday June 15, 8 p.m. at Strathcona Park Lodge dinning hall.

Education is Power and Cuddy will present a philosopher night with guest speakers Dave Mills from Dogwood Initiative and Brian Gunn from Concerned Engineers of BC to discuss Canadian Oil Development and Democracy (including silent auction benefit). Also, on Wednesday June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Campbell River Library, Cuddy will do a talk on Education is Power with a goal of gaining interested people to help organize a fundraiser in Campbell River. As the school year comes to a close and finals approach, new feelings sweep over the students of Carihi. Sure school is becoming more and more important as the year edges on, and all those missing projects pile on one after another, but the summer break is coming, and probably faster than most are expecting it to. Carihi student Erin Milligan believes that the year passed quickly due to many new things she experienced this school year, which she hasn’t experienced in previous years. “Yes, this year passed by quickly because the classes have been more fun and the teachers just seemed really into what they were doing. I also met many new people.” The 2013-2014 year at Carihi has been full of original ideas, and many productions, many of which were created and organized by Carihi students. “The Nautical science program is one of many new and innovative ideas this year,” says another Carihi student Christina Kelly, “but next year I’m looking forward to more sciences and more job opportunities.” While Kelly believes that the year went by fairly slowly due to a heavier coarse load, both she and Milligan agree that now that school is ending, they will be happier overall just to indulge in a little time for themselves in the sun. “Carihi is very interactive. programs are super vast and inclusive,” says Milligan, “but there are some things that Carihi could do better for next year.” Both Kelly and Milligan agree that even though there are many positive aspects, there are some things that Carihi could change for next year, like more variety at the breakfast table or more time spent outside of school on field trips. For all of the students who are graduating this year, high school will unfortunately become a past memory, but for them, life is just getting started as they will be experiencing a new beginning in the depths of the world of work.

The Glyn Fitzgerald award has honoured Carihi graduates who excel in scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship since 1966. This year the award went to Charlotte Morrison, a student, who, throughout her time at Carihi, has contributed to the community and strived for excellence. Glyn Cecil Fitzgerald was born on June 6, 1933 in Alert Bay. He attended school in Campbell River, and although he graduated from Lord Byng High School in Vancouver, he was well-rounded as a high school student. He was an athlete, an avid community volunteer, and the president of his student council in his Grade 12 year. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree at UBC and graduated with honours in History and Mathematics. Post-graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1963 he was appointed base manager and pilot of the Okanagan Helicopters establishment in Campbell River, and on Sept. 19, 1965, Fitzgerald was killed in a flying accident in rugged mountainous terrain in the Tofino/Zaballos region of Vancouver Island.

Jane Kolmatycki, a counsellor at Carihi explained the start of the annual award. “His many friends in aviation and in the village community decided to set up a Memorial Fund for an annual award to the graduating Carihi student who best exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship. So, in 1966, the year of our first graduating class, we honoured our first graduate with this award, a tradition we are still doing, some 48 years later,” she said. This year, at the Scholarship and Bursary evening, Morri-

son received the Glyn Fitzgerald award. Sean Toal, the principal of Carihi, presented her with the award and spoke of the Morrison’s achievements. “To be considered for the Glyn, it is imperative that the student demonstrate outstanding work ethic and performance in the classroom,” Toal said. “Charlotte consistently ranks at the top of her class and is described as hard working and conscientious - a student who strives to excel. “We are also honoured to recognize her contributions to the school and to the community that show her to be a well-rounded individual, who seems to be at every event and function working selflessly behind the scenes in the spirit of service leadership. It has been a pleasure getting to know this young lady over the past three years. Her positive attitude, constant smile, and genuine care and support of her friends and classmates exemplifies her worthiness of this award. Even though, after a tough test this year, she joked with me about lowering her standards to becoming a ‘C’ student to relieve the pressure she puts on herself (she has been a principal’s honour roll student since she arrived here at Carihi), I am confident that she will continue to excel in whatever she chooses to pursue.”

ided by sunny and warm weather, Campbell River and Quadra Island turned out en masse to celebrate Bike to Work Week 2014 from May 26 - June 1. There were 416 cyclists registered for the event, including 129 new riders, on 72 teams. When compared to 2013, the number of teams was down slightly but riders were up 30 per cent and new riders were up an amazing 200 per cent. Women beat out men on the participation front, making up 55 per cent of the cyclists. If everyone’s rides for the week were joined end to end, local riders would have made it to St. John’s Newfoundland and back (almost) to Campbell River with a total distance of 14,917 kilometers recorded. All of the huffing and puffing along the way burned up 447,500 calories and avoided the release of 3,200 kg of greenhouse gases. In return for their hard work, riders enjoyed fruit, yoghurt, muffins and coffee at three breakfast celebration stations and were able to chow down on fresh salmon burgers at a Spirit Square BBQ. They were also treated to a bicycle themed movie night at the Campbell River museum. Anyone who participated in the event was eligible for the Grand Prize of a Kona commuter bicycle donated by Spokes bicycle shop. The Grand Prize winner was Henry Grierson who received his new bike from Eddie Allen of Spokes. The local BTWW committee will be building on 2014’s success and has already started making preparations for Bike to Work Week 2015.

For Father’s Day take Dad on a fascinating exploration of the mysterious Intertidal zone of Campbell River. The Museum at Campbell River is offering an Intertidal Walk on June 15, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Biologist Sandra Milligan will lead a journey of discovery to the tip of the Willow Point Reef. “See seaweeds of all shapes and colours: the beautiful Corallina, the destructive ‘Stringy Acid Hair’, and edible ‘Soda Straws,’” says Milligan. “We’ll take a look

at the Bully-of-the-Beach and see what’s on his dinner plate. The walk will look closely at dozens of animals and algae, from crabs and chitons, to gastropods and gumboot chitons. Your observational skills will be developed and, if we’re lucky, you’ll see the most treasured and elegant of intertidal life: the opalescent nudibranch and the daisy brittle star. Once you know the names of these unusual creatures, you’ll discover the amazing strategies they’ve developed to live in this challenging environ-

ment. It will be a day to remember and an investment for future enjoyment of intertidal life!” And after the walk, why not visit the Aquarium? Dress for the weather – rubber boots are essential. The walk can be extremely slippery and wet and you should feel comfortable walking on uneven surfaces. A second walk is planned for July 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. CR gymnasts finish strong The Island Championships in Powell River was the final competition of the year for most of the gymnasts from the Campbell River Gymnastics Association (CRGA). The athletes had a strong showing wrapping up a fantastic year. Fortyone medals were brought home with nine girls finishing in the top three, including four Island All Around Champions. The Level two team won the first place trophy and the Level one team won the second place team award. Councillor Ryan Mennie says good-bye KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

There will be one less body at the council table now until November’s city election. Coun. Ryan Mennie announced at Tuesday’s council meeting that he is moving to Alberta and will finish out the rest of his term on council via telephone. “I’m very sad to say that this will be my last meeting in person for the rest of my term as councillor here at city hall,” Mennie said. “After 20 years on Vancouver Island and 16 years in Campbell River, my

career as a radio broadcaster has me returning to southern Alberta.” Mennie, who hosts the afternoon show for 97.3 the Eagle, was born and raised in Alberta but moved to Campbell River in 1998. He was first elected to council in 2008 and is nearing the end of his second term. The youngest on council, Mennie has been a fierce supporter of families. He and his wife Ludy have a young daughter and recently welcomed a son to the family. Coun. Claire Moglove, who has served with

Mennie throughout his entire time on council, said the councillor brought a fresh perspective that will be missed. “Quite surprised to hear of the move and disappointed we won’t have you on council,” Moglove said. “It’s been very refreshing, in particular this term, to have your voice on council and bringing to council the perspective of a younger, family-oriented person, has been invaluable.” Coun. Fishing Corner Little girls just wanna have fun…fishing There is a special culture that exists on Discovery Pier when it comes to fishing. There are a number of tourists who arrive each year to fish the pier and who also enjoy the walk along the pier. Locals also gather at the pier on a daily basis to cast out lures in hopes of adding their name to the scoreboard. Last Sunday I watched a young family at pier and the girls were quite attentive as Dad showed them how to cast out a line. Jane and Rowan Klein from Campbell River were casting out lures with Dad’s help and they were having fun. The girls have yet to catch a fish in Campbell River, but they did catch a trout in Washington State! Fishing is a family activity and you can never be to young or old to get out and enjoy the sport of fishing

On the lakes More than 100 adults registered for the Perry Assu and Charlie Henderson Memorial Trout Derby held last weekend at Buttle Lake. The best catch and release trout fishing can be had on the Elk River. Most of the water can be unfishable, but if you can get to the pools some fun can be had on a fly rod. There are creeks that
