Province cuts school support deal
Jeff Nagel
Black Press
The province has struck a tentative deal with 34,000 school support staff on the eve of British Columbia teachers’ vote on staging a full-scale strike. The five-year agreement reached Saturday provides wage increases totalling 5.5 per cent, with potential for more tied to the performance of the B.C. economy – in line with the standard settlements reached with other public sector unions. It covers education assistants, school secretaries, caretakers, bus drivers and other education support staff, mostly represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The union and provincial negotiators with the B.C. Public School Employers Association hammered the deal out in just five days fol-

lowing the start of talks last Tuesday. “This success provides ample evidence that the bargaining system works — when the parties come to the table with reasonable expectations and a flexible, solution-oriented approach,” said BCPSEA public administrator Michael Marchbank. “We built some momentum very quickly,” CUPE B.C. spokesman Rob Hewitt said. “The government came our direction enough to meet in the middle and we found a solution.” He added the union also secured increased hours for education assistants and standardization gains to extended health benefit plans. Asked if the timing of talks amid the intensifying teachers dispute helped CUPE negotiators, Hewitt said only the teachers were not discussed at the table. Also included is an Employee Support Grant covering any wages CUPE members
Fantastic package! Beautiful home, immaculate inside & out, from the gorgeous gardens to the terraced lake-side decks, this property will impress. lose by refusing to cross legal picket lines. The union’s support for the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and teachers’ pursuit of longterm adequate funding for public education “hasn’t changed one iota,” CUPE B.C. president Mark Hancock said. “Just as the teachers have been at our side as our members have fought for public education, we continue to stand with them.” The deal running through to the summer of 2019 must still be ratified by union members. School support staff get further wage increases in the final four years of the agreement equivalent to half of any increase of provincial economic growth in excess of the budget’s forecast. Gross Domestic Product growth of one per cent above the forecast in a given year would, for example, trigger a further 0.5 per cent pay hike.

Prom night a ‘big production’
Ken Alexander Free Press
Everyone associated with the Class of 2014 Prom Night had high praise for the festivities on May 31 from the parade at the beginning until the doors were locked at the end of the evening.
“
It was really outstanding and I think everyone had a great time ... and everyone got home safe and that’s the most important thing." – Vic Brett
Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School principal Vic Brett says the whole event was outstanding and quite different what might be expected at a prom. “Holly [Johnson] and her crew did a marvellous job. It was so

imaginative and everything was done up just ... right down to the finest detail. “It was really outstanding and I think everyone had a great time ... and everyone got home safe and that’s the most important thing.” Johnson says she was happy with how everything went, including the parade. “The kids were really pleased the community came out [lining Birch Avenue] supporting them and cheering them on. It’s fun to have the fancy cars recognized. “I hope to see the procession become a tradition. All the kids loved it and it was great to involve the community.” The real work for Johnson and her core group of volunteers led by Jeannie Capnerhurst was turning the arena into a vintage Hollywood movie theatre theme with a red carpet area and VIP entrance for the grads
who were greeted by Marilyn Monroe under the big theatre sign. Inside the arena, there was a large screen, and the grads walked out through the red curtains as they entered
“It was just a huge production and kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Each grad had their own star on the walk of fame,” Johnson explains.

100 Mile House RCMP Staff Sgt. Blake Ward, left, manned the drive-thru at Tim Hortons while staff members Candace Fox, Colleen Thibeault, at back, and Traci Parks prepared food during Camp Day on June 4.
Camp Day a community coup
Tim Hortons Camp Day in 100 Mile House was a rousing success on June 4, as it raised more than $5,600 and surpassed last year’s total by $1,500. Owner Steve MacPhail has had the store for 13 years, and says he always sees folks step up to help send a local child or children to camp. “We were up nicely from last year. Once again, we were greatly supported by this terrific community.” Tim Hortons restaurant owners across Canada donate 100 per cent of the proceeds from Camp Day coffee sales to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation. MacPhail notes national totals were also up to $11.8 million for 2014 – almost a $1 million over last year. The local store had several other fundraisers going on, from hotdog sales to windshield cleaners at the drive-thru, supported by local RCMP, BC
Ambulance Services and 100 Mile House Wranglers. “It was a great day. We had a lot of fun that day, too.” MacPhail rotates to a different local school
each year where school officials select two disadvantaged children to attend the Tim Hortons Children’s Ranch in Kananaskis, Alberta for a 10-day camp. This year, Horse Lake
Lone Butte
Elementary School is having its turn, he notes. Since 1975, the foundation has served more than 150,000 youths through its variety of camp programs.

Incident marked 100 years later Premier Christy Clark and NDP Leader John Horgan joined forces in the British Columbia legislature on May 28 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident, when a ship carrying 376 Indian immigrants was turned away from Vancouver harbour.

CHRISTY CLARK
Members of the Khalsa Diwan Societies of Vancouver and Nanaimo and descendants of passengers aboard the Komagata Maru, were on hand to witness the event in Victoria. The Komagata Maru was a Japanese steamship carrying mostly Sikh veterans of the British armed forces to British Columbia in 1914. Premier Clark called the incident “a stain on the history of Canada.” She noted it reflected the racist attitudes of the time. Federal and provincial officials and the courts took the position that Indian immigrants were not culturally compatible with Canadian society. The legislature unanimously endorsed a formal apology for the incident in 2008.

PSO grads go Hollywood
From 2
There an old car, a custom-made vintage mocktail/candy bar, Marilyn’s dressing room, a photo booth
and popcorn girls. Johnson says there was a lot of good entertainment to keep the grads busy, and they all said they appreciated the hard work that went
into the prom night. She adds the core organizing group got a lot help in the teardown and clean-up that followed the party. “I’m happy the grads had an unforgettable day and night and everyone got home safely. I enjoyed getting to know the grads and volunteer parents. I wish them all the best.”
