Students take pride in Colquitz care Saanich unveils student-designed interpretive signs along river trail Kyle Slavin News staff
Take a walk along the Colquitz River trail and you’ll enter into a world of natural wonderment. Native birds sing in the trees and fish swim in the clear waters below – all steps from a busy road and shopping centre. But it hasn’t always been that way. When Grade 6 teacher LauraLyn Helton began teaching at nearby Colquitz middle school (then a junior high school) in 1995, she remembers taking students down to a very different environment. “There were shopping carts, plastic and junk all in the creek,” she says. “It’s much better now.” Helton, who now teaches a sustainable resource class at the school, can’t help but feel proud on the edge of the river, where a permanent memento now stands, all thanks to her students. Last week Saanich unveiled interpretive signs featuring the artwork and poetry of Colquitz middle school students along the river. “It was so cool when they did

Daphine Bishop, 13, and Brett Hattie, 14, Grade 8 students at Colquitz middle school, stand next to the interpretive signs they and their classmates helped create along the Colquitz River. the unveiling; the kids were going along finding their art: ‘Oh , they used that! Look at mine!’” Helton says. The project was spearheaded by artists Paula Jardine and Carolyn Knight as another piece of a larger, multi-year project known as RiverSong: Celebrating Life Along the Colquitz. “They contacted the school with this vision to create some-
thing that was beautiful and interpretive and interesting that people would stop and read and look and learn,” Helton said. “It was interesting because it gave me a creative, artistic slant on the (sustainable resource) class that I probably, as a biologist, wouldn’t have taken otherwise.” Grade 8 students Brett Hattie, 14, and Daphine Bishop, 13, say the project opened their eyes

to just how much of an impact humans can have on the natural environment. “We went to the creek and drew pictures, and just took in the sights and sounds, and then we came back and wrote poetry,” Bishop says. “We would listen to the river. Once you zone out of the cars and listen, it’s really quite nice,” adds Hattie.
Mayor Frank Leonard, who attended Colquitz as a boy, says the students’ contributions to the Colquitz watershed isn’t lost on him. “My generation didn’t look after (the river). My generation abused it. Their generation wants to take pride in it and show that pride,” he says. “Their generation is going to make it even better, because they really do embrace it. This is a special place worth celebrating for years to come.” Hattie and Bishop, too, acknowledge that their artwork – panels that they hope to be able to show their kids decades down the road – will forever remain a part of the positive transformation of Colquitz River. “One of my favourite quotes is, ‘We don’t inherit the Earth from our parents, but we borrow it from our children.’ It’s not ours; we’ve got to pass this on, so we better make something good out of it,” Bishop says. “It’s brilliant,” Helton says of the project. “I think this gives them hope and it opens their eyes that everybody can do a little tiny bit and it will make a difference.” To see all the interpretive signs, go for a walk the Colquitz River trail or visit saanich.ca/ parkrec/parks/ColquitzInterpretiveSigns.html. editor@saanichnews.com

Aspiring ninja fights cancer campaign with fundraising drive
Saanich opens ‘bike kitchen’ on Lochside
Six-year-old Owen Krigolson raising money for ‘Poppa,’ who has prostate cancer

Cyclists who have a flat tire or whose bicycles are in need of a quick tune-up now have access to everything they may need to make repairs, as Saanich recently opened its first Bike Kitchen along the Lochside Regional Trail. Located behind municipal hall, the Bike Kitchen provides cyclists with free access to a variety of tools, from a bike pump and tire levers to hex keys and wrenches. The idea stemmed from inside municipal hall, as Saanich was looking to provide a repair station for staff members who ride to and from work. That quickly turned into making it a public asset that’s available to all cyclists. “It’s been great so far. Lots of people are using it,” said Mark Boysen, Saanich’s sustainability co-ordinator. “We will be looking at other opportunities on our trail systems and the (Capital Regional District, which owns the Lochside and Galloping Goose trails) has said the same. We’ll keep an eye on how this does and what the uptake is like.” The set-up on the trail also includes QR codes that send smartphone users to a page with more detailed instructions on how to fix a bike. Coun. Vic Derman, chair of Saanich’s bicycle and pedestrian mobility advisory committee, called the installation “a small but important step” towards improving cycling infrastructure in the municipality. The Bike Kitchen is located just off the Lochside trail at Darwin Avenue. While other high-traffic cycling destinations already have fix-it stations – like Camosun College’s two campuses in Saanich, and at the University of Victoria – this is the first to be located directly on the regional trail system. The Bike Kitchen cost $1,200 to purchase and install. editor@saanichnews.com

Owen Krigolson still wants to be a ninja. His blue-striped tie from The Prostate Centre bounces with vigour as he kicks the air. But back in November, the six year old karate student willingly, and surprisingly, backtracked on his birthday wish. “It was after the (sixth) birthday party when Owen told me he wanted to change his wish from being a ninja to raise money for Poppa’s cancer,” said Owen’s mom, Carrie Ferguson. Seven months later and Owen is regularly handling rather large sums of money for a kid in Grade 1, all while knowing he’ll be giving it away. He’s about $2,500 into a fundraising campaign on Poppa’s behalf, all going to The Prostate Centre. “I was in tears when Owen said that,” said Owen’s grandfather, “Poppa” Dave Ferguson. “I don’t even know where he got the idea start fundraising.” “I’m still Dave, 67, is a retired teacher who worked in awe at what at Braefoot, Campus View and Frank Hobbs Owen is doing.” elementary schools, - ‘Poppa’ and Monterey middle Dave Ferguson school. He was diagnosed with inoperable prostate cancer a year-and-a-half ago, and is doing well, as he’s currently on hormone treatments. “I’m still in awe at what Owen is doing,” Dave said. “It snowballed from his birthday to Christmas, Valentine’s and Easter. The money just keeps coming in, sometimes with a present or sometimes instead of one. I harken back to how Jeneece Edroff started. It’s unlikely to match what Edroff has done but it’s mushroomed to something big in its own way.” Owen has already surpassed his Father’s Day goal of raising $2,000. Carrie now thinks he will hit $3,000 by Sunday. “Then I’ll keep going!” Owen says. In between eating rice cakes and winking at his Poppa, playful Owen shows off a $126 donation from his classmates in Ms. Paul’s Division 12 class at Campus View elementary. Then he opens his mail: a Superman card from an admirer in Esquimalt who heard about Owen’s philanthropic endeavour. “I am inspired by the Super job you’ve done,” reads the notes, which includes a $20 bill. “Wow, we don’t even know this person,” Dave says. “This is what it’s coming to now.” Leanne Kopp, director of The Prostate Cen-

I can’t imagine my kid growing up without me. “I know people get cancer all the time, but when you’re in your mid-30s and he didn’t do anything to bring it on, it’s just rotten luck.” Namoko was initially diagnosed with stomach cancer a couple years ago. He underwent
surgery and treatment, and was given a clean bill of health last year. But just a few months later he started to have back pain, which was chalked up to him having been off work and off his feet for a while. “In early January his wife took him to emergency because of the pain and they were like, ‘You have bone cancer. You’ve probably only got a week to live,” said Spier, a BC Transit driver. Namoko held on another three weeks, but lost his battle to cancer in January.

Driver’s story inspires others Continued from Page A5 Around the same time, Spier spotted an ad online for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a popular two-day cycling event from Vancouver to Seattle to raise money for cancer research. Despite not being a cyclist, Spier was motivated to sign up. “I can’t fork out a $3,000 cheque and help fight this (disease). I’m doing this to get more exposure. I know what I’m doing is only a drop in the bucket, but if everybody throws a drop in, that bucket’s pretty full soon,” Spier said. While he’s behind the wheel of a bus getting to know the roads most days, Spier’s off time is spent training solo for the ride. Down 14 pounds since he started, he says he’s “as ready as I’m going to be” for this week-
end’s ride. He’s just thankful he has the health to do something like this to benefit others. He’s also thankful for the outpouring of support he’s received from his co-workers, friends and family members. “We’re all pretty inspired here by his story,” said Meribeth Burton, spokeswoman for BC Transit. “We can all relate to how sudden and tragic cancer can be. But Brian’s story, his commitment, his dedication; we’ve all been touched by what he’s doing.” More than 2,500 riders are expected to take part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Last year 2,642 riders raised $10.4 million. The Ride has raised more than $50 million in the last five years. To support a rider, visit conquercancer.ca. editor@saanichnews.com

On Tuesday, the Saanich school hosted a barbecue to celebrate the life of Xavier Pelletier and to raise money for Halsted and Team Xav. The school raised $500 for Team Xav.

Sunny days can kill you Canadians love the sun so much, it’s killing us. After being cooped up for months at a time to shelter from the snow and cold and, in the case of southwestern British Columbia, interminable rain, we rejoice at the first days of warm sunshine. By July we’re positively basking in it. And that’s leading to an alarming increase in skin cancer, according to a report released by the Canadian Cancer Society, Statistics Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The report says there will be about 6,500 new cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed in Canada this year. That’s the deadliest, most insidious form of skin cancer that will kill more than 1,000 Canadians. Another 76,100 cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will also be diagnosed. Those are less serious and can usually be treated in the doctor’s office. Unlike many other forms of cancer, the incidence of skin cancer is actually going up rather than down. For men, the incidence rate went up two per cent between 1986 and 2010. For women it increased 1.5 per cent. Mortality rates also increased. Those are sobering statistics worth thinking about the next time the seven-day weather forecast shows a solid run of glowing, golden orbs. Especially since it’s so easy to prevent skin cancer. While it might be a little much to ask people to stay indoors, it’s not a big deal to put on that shirt, roll down those sleeves, slap on that hat, slop on that sunscreen. And pay heed to that UV index that’s become a standard feature of most weather forecasts to avoid the sun’s rays when they’re at their most damaging. A little summertime prevention will mean being able to enjoy a lot more sunny seasons to come. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. Union shouldn’t negotiate class sizes On Tuesday night, 28,809 teachers out of 41,000, about 70 per cent of them, voted to escalate their job action to a full scale walkout, all for the sake of the children, of course. It’s such a shame that they can’t put this action aside for a mere two-and-a-half weeks and see our children through to the end of the year and hammer out their differences during the summer. The sticking points seem to largely be wages and class sizes, with class sizes overshadowing wages. Teachers work hard and the $4080,000 wage range I’ve heard is a good wage, considering they get a lot of time off. But it isn’t excessive by today’s standards. An educated population is essential in today’s economy, both to the individual and society as a whole. Governments must balance spending on education with health care and other social spending which is properly set by government policy. Class sizes impact the budget in a huge way, more so than wage increases. Because of that, class sizes should be set by government policy and fought at the ballot box. The class size issue should not be set, or even negotiated, by the union. They have a direct conflict of interest in doing so. If a teacher earning $60,000 a year gets a two-per-cent wage

increase, that’s an extra $1,200 per year of which the union claims 1.69 per cent, or approximately $20 per year. But if you create a new union position at $60,000 a year, that’s an extra $1,014 a year – much more valuable to the union. I believe this was a bad decision by the courts to support the appeal. If the teacher’s union is successful, you’ll have all the unions wanting to set staffing levels under the guise of working conditions because the precedent will have been set. Watch out taxpayer. Give the public its say on amalgamation Every week local media have articles on how municipal services are delivered. It appears a vast majority of Greater Victoria residents have opinions on how we can do things better. How do we have a referendum on studying how best to deliver
local services and still have some resemblance of local government? Can Section 797.3 or 797.31 of the Local Government Act be used to seek that opinion? Public education services are delivered effectively by three school districts with 23 elected trustees. The municipal boundaries could mirror the school districts as follows: Core municipalities – Victoria, Saanich, Esquimalt and Oak Bay. Western communities – Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Highlands, Metchosin and Sooke. Saanich Peninsula – Central Saanich, North Saanich, parts of Saanich and Sidney. This could reduce the number of municipalities to three from 13 and the number of elected council members from approximately 100 to 27 or so. The need for the regional district could be eliminated too. Please let the public have a say on how their services are delivered. Bill Burns Victoria

Show up, step up, take risks in life and career David Black, owner of the News, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria. The following is a transcript of his convocation speech Today is a great day for me. The doctorate is a wonderful honour from a University I have watched grow and flourish into a world-ranked institution. It is also embarrassing because I don’t feel my work is completed yet. Nevertheless, I would like to pass on to the graduating class some lessons I have learned thus far in my career in the hopes they may be of some use. My story is not complex. I received an Engineering degree from UBC and an MBA from Ivey in London. In 1975 I started my own business by buying a small weekly newspaper in Williams Lake. Over the years with the help of a terrific wife, a father who mentored me, and the hard work of a great many employees, we have grown to 200 publications with revenues of half a billion dollars. I had no plan in 1975 to grow the business like this. My only thought was to publish the best paper I could. I worked long hours because we were in debt and we had a growing family. Over time I came to be an expert in every phase of the business. Because of that I fell in love with publishing. My first career lesson for you then, is just show up. If you are like I was at your age you have no idea what career will appeal to you. You don’t have to know. Just dive into something. Work hard. The more skill you develop the more you will enjoy the work. You will know when or if it is time to move on to something else. I mentioned my wife and father and what a help they were to me. My second piece of advice is to surround yourself with bright people, both as workmates and friends. Listen to them and help them in return. With my four children on our companies’ Boards of Directors and an excellent management team in place I thought, now that I am over 65, I would be easing back somewhat, enjoying more sailing, and babysitting grandchildren. My only real career regret was that I hadn’t had a chance to practice any engineering. It’s funny how life unfolds. Instead, over the last two years I have embarked on one of the biggest engineering projects in Canada’s history and I am working harder than ever. When not working on Black Press I am consumed by trying to build a B.C. oil refinery, pipeline and tanker fleet at a total cost of $32 billion. So my third career message for you is that you cannot know your future. By all means plan. But don’t assume things will go as expected. I will tell you a little about the refinery project because it leads to my final and most important piece of advice. The project is called Kitimat Clean. The refinery will convert Alberta’s bitumen to gasoline and diesel, products which float and evaporate if there is a spill at sea. Bitumen acts differently. If it is spilled off our coast it will sink and we won’t be able to recover it. It will also blanket the intertidal zone and we won’t be able to remove it. The damage could last for hundreds of years. I got into this project to help ensure this doesn’t happen. A world-scale refinery has other great advantages for us all: it will create 10,000 new permanent jobs in B.C. and it will generate billions of dollars of new taxes annually for government coffers. My children and I are concerned about the environment like most of you are, so we decided to spend an extra $3 billion to build the refinery with new Canadian technology, cutting CO2 emissions by 5 million tonnes per year. This is equivalent to avoiding the annual emissions of

The University of Victoria’s president and vice chancellor Jamie Cassels, left, honorary doctorate recipient David Black and UVic chancellor Murray Farmer after Wednesday’s convocation ceremony, during which Black received his degree. 1.2 million cars. The refinery will be so clean it will more than compensate for the extra CO2 emissions in the oilsands. Clearly we need to ratchet down our use of fossil fuels. But that does not influence whether to build a refinery in Canada. Asia needs more refined fuel every year. If we don’t build the refinery in Canada it will be built in Asia. By shipping our bitumen to Asia for refining, we not only put the ocean at risk and lose the enormous value-added benefits, the planet will end up with twice the CO2 emissions. Unfortunately for a variety of
reasons our big oil companies are not interested in a new Canadian refinery. The president of one of our largest oil companies told me that he agrees it is viable to refine bitumen in Canada, and that it is nation building at its best, but that no oil company in Alberta will do it. In fact some oppose it. So it came down to this; if I thought it important enough, I would have to spearhead it. That is what I am doing. I hope by setting high standards we can show the way forward for responsible management of Canada’s bitumen from an economic and an environmental
point of view. My final message to you today is simple. When your big challenge or opportunity arises, do the same. Do it better. When you know something is wrong, step up. Take a risk. Challenge tradition and fight vested interests. Use your education, experience and networks in a positive way to benefit yourself and your family, of course, but whenever you can always try to improve the world around you as well. The satisfaction that gives you will fulfill you. Go to it graduates and best wishes for the future.

Teachers want class size, staff control back in dispute
About 300 teachers, parents and children gathered in front of the B.C. Ministry of Education offices this week to protest the ongoing labour dispute. Many teachers expressed frustration that students in B.C. receive less funding per pupil than other provinces, and that class composition hasn’t yet been rectified despite a court case that ruled in the teachers’ favour.

The frustration of Greater Victoria teachers was palpable this week, as about 300 teachers and supporters picketed the offices of the B.C. Ministry of Education to protest ongoing labour negotiations. On Tuesday night, teachers voted 86 per cent in favour of a full walkout to put maximum pressure on the provincial government at the bargaining table. Should no deal be reached, the earliest possible date for school closures across B.C. would be Monday, June 16 and that could impact the last nine days of the school year. “Parents are telling me they’re taking their What would the kids out of public school to put them in private full strike mean for school, and it’s for exactly the reasons we’re K-Grade 9 students? fighting here: smaller classes, one-to-one sup• Schools closed; port, teacher-librarian full-time,” said Benula Daniel Palmer/News staff • Parents Larsen, Greater Vicshould make child toria Teachers Assocare arrangements, ciation president. where required; Nessie Magee, a • Final report cards teacher at Saanich’s will be sent to parents, Strawberry Vale elebut written comments mentary, said she’s may be shorter than frustrated many Testosterone levels begin to diminish in men around age 30. But year after year guys like Peters hang in, or return as Johnson did after a stint away, because of the friendships formed. “Camaraderie and for the health of my lungs,” Peters says. Between posture, presentation, learning music and lyrics, it’s a good workout. But the biggest achievement is when a catatonic senior starts a slow and slight tap of the foot to a tune, or when a gaggle of elders move their lips to the words, and on occasion sing along.

work. The social aspect is always a big one.” Then there’s the repertoire. The traditional selections of English wartime songs, sea shanties and four-part harmonies aren’t necessarily alluring for the younger singers. But they have a few that the older members love to perform. So they balance, programs like this year’s finale spans a spectrum that includes a joyful Mozart canon and Elton’ John’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight (remember The Lion King?).

Two men with music on their minds settle into a small Victoria studio, chatting readily about their choir’s upcoming season finale. The congeniality is obvious when a third comes through the door. “Frankie – as in Avalon,” Jim Johnson greets Frank Peters as the 25-year veteran of the group, settles into the couch. The greeting highlights what Johnson, president of the Victoria Male Voice Choir, was previously saying – it’s about camaraderie as much as song. “It’s like we’re a big family. There’s a sense of community with all these guys.” ‘These guys’ are about 20 men who rehearse out of Esquimalt United Church on Admirals Road, perform six or eight times a year in seniors’ residences, hold a Christmas fundraising concert, then wind up with a finale concert. This year the men celebrate 35 years of songs with Bringing us Together on June 14 at Cordova Bay United Church. “We’ve done everything from the Empress Hotel to McPherson,” says Johnson, proud of prior performance venues. The diversity of their playlist, or repertoire, is part of what closes the generational gaps. Though down to about half the numbers of their crew in the 1990s, the youngest singer is in his mid-20s and the oldest – well many hang around to roughly 90. Johnson, president of the choir, credits musical director Yanik Giroux with providing a “flexible and entertaining” environment for keeping the guys’ interest. “At least half of them have been there since I started … there’s a core,” says Giroux, an 11-year veteran with the men’s choir. “It’s about balance,” he adds. “They meet every week. Mom does her best to give daughter a fashion sense It should come as no surprise that my younger daughter is taking a year off her fine arts degree to attend a 12-month fashion design program. From the day she set foot in Kindergarten, she exhibited signs of fashion … determination. I’ve heard some parents select and purchase clothes that their children actually wear. I used to see these children, splendidly groomed in cute, kid-sized versions of trendy clothes. It’s not that I’m particularly trendy myself, but I always assumed my children would inherit my taste in clothing (i.e., they’d wear little jeans and denim jackets; maybe a Canucks’ jersey once in awhile). But Sierra
Susan Lundy shunned my beloved denim and clung to her own unique sense of dress. The first sign that something was amiss occurred when I took her shopping, and she selected a dress for Kindergarten. A dress? “Sweetie, look at these cool jeans.” The dress had a black velour bodice (really? velour?) with little coloured buttons on the front and a multicoloured, mostly pink (pink!) flowery skirt. She clutched it as we drove home. She
found a pair of tights and a pair of little black (shiny!) shoes and wore the outfit to Kindergarten the next day. And the following day. And the day after. And so on. In fact, she would wear nothing else for six months. Same dress. Same tights. Same shoes. I tried luring her with other clothing, buying dresses and placing them in visible spots. But the growth of her wardrobe seemed to spur her determination to wear one dress. Once in a while I found myself hiding the dress or slipping it into the wash. “Can’t find it! How about one of your other 25 dresses?” Then I discovered she was hiding it, stuffing it in the bed or slipping it under a carefully placed

Today’s senior living communities are vibrant, active, resident focused communities, respectfully supporting the individuality of each resident. Each community has its own personality – just like all of us. Make no mistake – these are NOT the “Nursing Homes” your great aunt Mary used to live in! A good entry level community could be a Retirement Community. Sometimes these are also called Independent or Supportive Living Housing. These individual apartment style communities offer a large choice of services and amenities for the residents. Many new communities can be compared to a cruise ship or hotel environment, while still maintaining a comfortable, home environment. Most retirement communities include a beautifully appointed dining room, private dining room, social rooms, theatre, library, fitness areas, etc. The ‘hospitality’ services you can expect include meals, laundry, cleaning, social and recreation programs, 24-hour emergency response and transportation. There are also some optional fee-for-services made available as per your needs such as hair salon, aesthetics, massage, personal laundry, etc.

“Coincidence or bad karma? It was an identical dress. Sierra was thrilled; I admitted defeat.” blanket in her toy box. Finally, its velvety bodice became threadbare and she agreed to retire it. I danced a little jig of happiness around the house. A short time later we attended a niece’s birthday party where my mother-in-law excitedly brought out a bag. She explained that the child of a friend saw this dress and wanted Sierra to have it. Coincidence or bad karma? It was an identical dress. Sierra was thrilled; I admitted defeat. A year later she attached herself to a single pair of Osh Kosh overalls; thankfully I found an identical pair in one size larger around Christmas time, because by then, she had gone through both knees and was close to bursting through the back side. Every September, as school rolled around, I thought, this is it. This year, she will wear a variety of clothes (specifically, jeans and a denim jacket). But every year, she found another attachment. Shuddering, I sent her off to Grade 3 one morning wearing three-quarter length pants, big purple, rubber boots and the blue (velour) shirt she’d been wearing for the past four weeks. But then I stopped short in the schoolyard, stunned as I looked around and saw the girls in Sierra’s class. All of them: short pants, velour shirts and boots. Sierra’s fashion “sense” had apparently caught on. And perhaps that’s not a bad thing to have on your fashion school resume.

Counselling can go a long way toward reducing one’s stress Don Descoteau News staff
The ability to talk to someone about problems in one’s life can be a huge relief for parents under stress. At the 1-Up Single Parent Resource Centre, counsellor and educational programs co-ordinator Cheryl Dick hears regularly from clients about life’s challenges, from problems with relationships to financial stressors to simply dealing with the emotional and physical workload that comes with being a single parent. For the most part, she says, it boils down to convincing people they have the resources within to get on the top side of issues that are causing them stress and anxiety. “Even though people are struggling, we certainly see how resilient people are or how resourceful they are,” she says. “Often it’s just reminding people about the strength they do have. You kind of get blindered when you’re in the middle of a crisis. In some ways it’s helping them get perspective again.” Communication issues and difficulties managing conflict are just two common themes with which Dyck helps clients. “There’s a lot of people who are struggling with relationships, whether that’s

with their ex-partner or someone else,” she says. “It can be relationships with family and friends, and even relationships with their kids, who may be starting to act out or are having anxiety over separating with their parents.” Many clients using the centre’s counselling services don’t have a broad social network or family nearby to relieve some of the workload. Poverty can play a role in the mental state of single parents as well, Dyck says. If a parent can’t afford to put their kids in sports, or perhaps can’t find a job that pays enough to cover daycare costs, it can lead to isolation. Seeking counselling can be a good way for any parent to unburden themselves of the pressures and stressors of daily life, Dyck says. “It really is a place where they can feel safe to get the load off their chest, whatever it is that’s irking them or taking up a lot of energy. They get a neutral place to sort that out. We can give them some practical things to think about … that helps them explore new options, helps them undo a stuck pattern.” While clients who receive one-on-one counselling at 1-Up must be registered members of the centre – there’s a six-month wait list for the service – other local organizations provide low-cost or sliding-scale counselling for parents in financial difficulties. Among them are Citizens Counselling, located in Quadra Village, and B.C. Families in Transition in

Aside from the 6-speed manual, Subaru offers their version of a Continuously Variable Transmission, aka the Lineartronic CVT. While some might not be a fan of this type of transmission, don’t knock it until you try it. Subaru does an excellent job with the gear simulations and I didn’t feel the drone of the system under hard acceleration, even with the 4-cylinder. Finishing touches for a magnificent Mustang installation of original Ford front disc-brakes; these are a must in today’s traffic. Collector vehicle drivers are very cautious. Invariably when accidents occur, it is the drivers around you that are not paying attention or cutting you off. 360 have done their research and paid a lot of attention to detail during this rebuild, right down to avoiding the temptation of installing an exhaust
Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the third part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang. The Mustang T5 body shell has been painted, clear coated, wet-sanded, recleared and finally polished to a show quality finish. Now comes the fun part of a restoration, the reassembly, opening boxes and fitting all of those new parts. This is as close as you can get to being a car factory assembly line worker except you are doing every task instead of just one, and you have all the time that is needed and you don’t have to work to the speed of a moving production line. One of the upgrades that the T5 will receive is a new product designed to dampen and suppress the driveline and road noise, making the inner cabin as quiet as possible and a bit like a modern car. The foil-covered pads have a peel-off backing and are adhered to every inner sheet metal panel such as the roof, floor, doors and
bulkhead. The next step is to install the new wiring harness; old wiring harnesses become brittle over time due to heat and corrosion at the joints and terminals, ask the owner of any British sports car from that era! The interior has been completely renewed from top to bottom staring with the headliner, trim panels, carpets and dash pads and the seats have all been reupholstered. Before the new back glass and windshield are installed (all of the other glass panels have been replaced) the new vinyl top is installed. Installing a vinyl roof is not a task that is performed very often these days, but
360 have the skills to do this in-house. LKQ stocks a huge selection of high quality muscle car sheet metal and parts. “If you are doing a premium muscle car restoration the only sheet metal you want to use is from LKQ,” said Rick Francoeur at 360. The exterior panels will soon have their final fitting. They have been fitted and removed during the restoration process countless times to make sure that the panel gaps are correct. The final fitting process will involve two or three people to make sure that the paint does not get chipped or damaged. Before the original V-8
engine was removed from the car it underwent a compression check, all of the cylinders had equal and strong readings so a complete re-build was not necessary. The carburetor has been replaced with a new two-barrel, the automatic transmission has been completely re-built, as has the rear axle. Rick talked Laura out of fitting a modern rack and pinion power steering kit or even upgrading the manual steering box to a power-assisted unit so it will be reliving the Armstrong steering experience for Laura when parking at low speeds! One safety upgrade is the
system with two tailpipes. Next week, we will explore what exactly a T5 is; how rare they are and explore some of the events that Laura and her brand new old car will attend in this 50th anniversary year of the Ford Mustang. there are no carry-over body panels. A domed hood, bigger grille and new headlamps also give this Escape a slightly more aggressive look and it has better off-road attributes in terms of approach, breakover and departure angle capabilities. A base front-drive Escape XLS is powered by a 2.3-litre engine. Moving up a step, the XLT trim allowed a 3.0-litre V6 option and a tow package that bumped trailer-hauling capability to 1,588 kg (3500 lb). The top-line Limited came with leather, dual climate control air conditioning and Audiophile sound system, more power features, and the V6 engine. Four-wheel-drive was an option with every trim level. If an urban commute is your vehicles primary job and good fuel economy is important there’s also a hybrid version of the Escape. It has a smoother and quieter powertrain than the first generation Escape Hybrid,

While stability control was standard on all gas-engine versions of the ’08 Escape, it wasn’t available on the Hybrid. Same story for a related new safety feature on the ’08, called Roll Stability Control. Both of these important active safety features were made standard on the ‘09 and newer Escape Hybrid. The Escape Hybrid is a full hybrid and capable of running purely on electric power up to about 40 km/ hour. It also uses a continuously variable transmission. Paint that Nissan clean
Washing a car can be a chore and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan in Europe has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again. The specially engineered super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paint, which repels water and oils, has been applied to the all-new European market Nissan Note to create the world’s first self-cleaning car. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Ironman debuts at Elk Lake Travis Paterson News staff
It’s a new name, but it’s the same race – for now. The everlong Saunders Subaru Ironman 70.3 Victoria Triathlon will snake through all three Saanich municipalities on Sunday: Central, North and Saanich proper. Among the hundreds of hungry athletes is a deep field of elites, though the race is still without the substantial prize purse that goes along with the Ironman name. That may come in future years, as will a few other tweaks since Ironman purchased the five-race Western Triathlon Series in May. One of the key changes for the Victoria race this weekend is the creation of 75 qualifying spots for the Ironman 70.3 North American Championships in Mt. Tremblant, Que., on Aug. 17. “It’s a key qualifier for a lot of athletes that want to go to the world championships,” said Keith McGonigal, Ironman’s operations manager for the Western Tri Series. The Bend, Ore., resident has been based out of the new LifeSport building at Elk Lake during the transition. He expects an extra 50 to 65 additional entrants on top of the 330 who participated in the 2013 Victoria Triathlon, though the prize purse is rather modest compared to other Ironman 70.3 (mile) events. “We’re trying to focus on making sure we’re prepared for the increased number of athletes. It means increased support on the water, medical support, and other areas,” he said. “We didn’t think it was fair to the athletes who had already set their schedule to bump up the prize purse (so late in the season), but we’re certainly considering it for 2015.” As it stands, the top three males and females will receive $1,000 for first, $600 for second and $400 for third. Still, the race will bring out hometown boy Brent McMahon, LifeSport’s star pupil, a favourite to win after he took the Boise and Hawaii 70.3 races in the past two weeks. Joining the elite field for the 19th year of the race are Andrew Russell, who was second among the men last year, and the 2013 women’s winner Karen Thibodeau, as well as local threats Stephen
Kilshaw and Janet Nielson. Race numbers for Sunday are consistent for the shorter sprint and Olympic distances, which were 236 and 245, respectively, in 2013. It’s rare for Ironman to run a sprint or Olympic distance race, he said, and it’s even more rare to have them on the same day. “Not much is going to change right now; we just want a successful event,” McGonigal said. LifeSport, which continues to operate as an elite Triathlon coaching business, created the Tri Series, but sold that part of their business to Ironman. It meant cutting ties with four employees who are dedicated to the race series, though they’ll remain in LifeSport’s snappy new building at Elk Lake. “(LifeSport) is helping to operate the race in conjunction with Ironman this year, but we do hope to carry on as the official coaches of all five Western Tri Series events for many years coming,” said Paul Regensburg, co-owner of LifeSport. “We built these races and we know them.” Regensburg and LifeSport own the two-storey office space where Elk Lake Restaurant once sat. It overlooks the starting line of the Ironman 70.3, as well as the starting line Self Transcendence Triathlon (Aug. 3). There was a possibility that Ironman would lease a 1,400-square-foot loft space in the new LifeSport building, but that opportunity is still open to a new tenant, Regensburg said. reporter@saanichnews.com

LifeSport explained
Ironman’s recent purchase of the race series’ parent company, LifeSport Properties, means the long distance triathlon previously known as a half-Ironman can now use Ironman’s official 70.3 branding, which refers to the number of miles covered in the race, a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride and 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. Victoria is the second of five races in the Western Triathlon Series with coming dates in Saskatoon (June 29), Vancouver (July 13) and Banff (Sept. 6).

SPRING CLEANING
Forward thinking therapy Travis Paterson News staff
Travis Paterson/News staff
Lillith Rosenberg, 5, sits atop Taz, while Rebecca Phillips, owner of Forward Equestrian and Wellness Centre, a horseassisted therapy ranch, stands nearby. In contrast, if Lillith is walking in her downtown North Park neighbourhood she’ll make a detour to avoid a seedy sidewalk dandelion. “Her confidence has increased tenfold since riding here, she’s almost non-autistic when here,” says dad Keith Rosenberg. As parents of an autistic child under age six, Keith and Cassie qualify for $22,000
towards therapy and other programs for Lillith. It still leaves them short of the necessary funds to put Lillith into the nature- and equinebased kindergarten at Forward in September. “We want to set her up here for life,” Keith says. The parents are about to get another $22,000 for their second child, three-yearold Colin, who has
also been diagnosed with autism. Colin, too, is excited to get on a horse. There are 17 horses at Forward, all of them with skills that help the animals adapt to the special needs of individual riders. “This is only my second time on Sookie, but she’s starting to adapt to me,” said rider Kim Scott, 19. Having cerebral palsy can make it hard to ride a horse, but the horses at Forward are patient, she says. Scott’s regular horse, Adam, is taking a break to regain his strength, but they’ll soon train together again and are scheduled to return to national level paraequestrian competition this summer. In addition, Scott says Adam helped her manage her mental health, part of her generalized anxiety treatment at Forward. Forward Equestrian is holding an open house tomorrow (June 14) from 1 to 3 p.m. at 4420 Wilkinson Rd. reporter@saanichnews.com

In true World Cup spirit, Taz was up to his soccer playing tricks on Wednesday. The 22-year-old pony can still gallop, an impressive feat for the senior citizen that he is. But it’s nothing compared to the mean game of soccer he still possesses. A visitor to Forward Equestrian and Wellness Centre passes him his red soccer ball, which is one metre in diameter. He not only tracks it down gently, acutely aware of fiveyear-old Lillith Rosenberg on his back, but he also returns the pass with authority. This horse can play. “Walk on now Taz,” commands Lillith, as the old boy leaves the ball behind and trots her around the arena at the Saanich centre, which focuses on equine-assisted therapy, equestrian lessons, training and related programs for children and adults with autism or brain injuries. Forward is run by Rebecca Phillips. “We use evidencebased techniques to help people become grounded with the animals by connecting with a living being,” Phillips said. Several types of therapists are brought in for occupation and physical services, and all have equine experience to help visitors connect. Forward offers a variety of programs, including lessons for the public and Hoofbeats, an early childhood education program where preschoolers can get outside and interact with horses. Lillith came to Forward two months ago, and is now a regular at the Wilkinson Road ranch. When she’s there, she is no longer an autistic five-year-old struggling to fit in with others her age. Instead, she’s a comfortable kid who can let go of the unique fears that come with autism, such as the feeling of long grass, which she’ll happily rip out of the ground and feed to Taz, says mom Cassie Hooker. “Bringing Lillith here is like nothing else,” Cassie says. “She talks about it all week; asking, ‘When can I ride Taz?’”

ARTHRITIS Calming Stress
Helps to promote healthy mood balance, relaxation, use as a sleep aid and mental stress. Stress is one of the main causes of high blood pressure. Truthful experience by people: < I am calm now in stressful situations! In the past 10 years I had a very short fuse, because my job is quite unpredictable. After I started Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 the difference was amazing. My reactions to stressful situations are totally changed. I also have more energy, too. I don’t yell at others. I have more patience and I am much happier as well. Thank you. Mary-Anne Thompson, 61, Lasalle, ON < I suffered greatly from anxiety. #66 NPN 80041855 Standard treatments did not make me feel good. So my mother bought Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 and it has been helping me a lot. I am on my 3rd bottle. Remington Fletcher, 19, Ponty Pool, ON < I have a very high stress career in the film industry. There was no time for relaxation or meditation as you are on demand for 12-15 hours a day with no breaks. Since using Bell #66I am able to focus on the tasks at hand with more patience. Thank you for your help! Christina Ollson, 36, Burnaby, BC <It’s exactly one year since we began using Bell Calming Chronix Stress #66 for our two sons. Our local health food store recommended it. Both of our sons suffer from anxiety disorders. Our older son (14) was going through puberty and had become quite unmanageable, because he is much larger than I am. We are delighted with the immediate results. Our older son became his former sweet self and our younger son’s (12) anxiety is dramatically reduced. Thank you so much. HomeFinder Find a place to call home
Q: WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR SELLING MY HOME DURING THE SUMMER? Mow your lawn regularly – If you’re watering regularly, grass grows especially fast when the hot sun is beating down so make sure to keep it trim and tidy. Trim bushes and plant flowers if you have time and look into painting your house number on your curb. Keep it bright inside – Increase the perceived size of the home by opening it up, removing heavy drapes and pulling all your blinds up. The nose knows – Sometimes air fresheners can work against you. Vanilla can smell great, but it can overwhelm if not used sparingly. If needed, consider natural fragrances such as cut roses, flower petals.

When the numbers show continued growth in the real estate market, it’s hard not to be excited. May’s sales figures for the Greater Victoria region showed the best numbers since 2010, according to Victoria Real Estate Board president and active agent Tim Ayres. But the best of 2014 may well be yet to come. “I haven’t seen a start to June like this in a while,” he said this week, when asked for his thoughts on the state of the local market. “It’s healthy.” Forget the old expression about March coming in like a lion. Early sales for this month have local agents on pace to knock out the June 2013 numbers. That said, Ayers and others continue to describe the Capital Region housing market as “balanced,” meaning neither buyers nor sellers have the upper hand in negotiations. “It’s one of those funny markets,” he said. “You don’t really have the buyers beating down your door. At the same time, we don’t really see an end to the busy season.” From a cost perspective, prices are remaining fairly constant, with only a one-per-cent upward blip in the region’s benchmark price for a typical home. With no pressure up or down on

The selection of single family homes on the Greater Victoria real estate market is good, but well-priced, well-shown homes continue to sell quickly and command prices closest to asking price. price, and interest rates remaining low, there’s less chaos in the market and agents have more time to spend working with buyers to ensure they find a home that is the right fit, Ayers said. “Whether you’re a Realtor or a seller, you want to be sure the buyer wants your property. There’s less complications that way.” Bill Ethier, president of Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, noted that when it’s a buyers or sellers’ market, it’s usually a sign that something not

so good is on the horizon. Having a balanced market helps “put confidence back in the marketplace,” he said. “These times are like a nice, stoked fire going along nicely,” Ethier said. “Buyers have a chance to look around and take time and be cautious, but at the same time we’re seeing multiple offers, like any market, if it shows well and is priced well, it’s going to go quickly.” He said the $450,000 to $600,000 price range continues to be the
sweet spot for sales in the region. Helping keep the market on an even keel is the absence of impending regulatory changes, such as the shorter amortization periods from late 2012 that prompted many people to jump into the market quickly ahead of that change. The relatively low cost of borrowing helps too, he said. “We’ve been told we can’t maintain these low rates forever, but we’ve had this for four years now.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

More jobs expected over summer months Brush the dust off that resume – Greater Victoria employers are expected to do more hiring this year, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. “Survey data reveals that 23 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (July to September), while seven per cent anticipate cutbacks,” said Jeff Polkinghorne of Manpower’s Vancouver office. Another 70 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staff-
ing levels in the upcoming quarter. “With seasonal variations removed from the data, Victoria and the Capital Regional District’s third quarter Net Employment Outlook of 11 per cent is an increase of six percentage points when compared to the previous quarterly Outlook,” said Polkinghorne. “It is an eight percentage point decrease from the Outlook reported during the same time last year, but still indicates a hopeful hiring pace for the upcoming months.” editor@saanichnews.com
