Crosswalk solution nixed Council rejects recommendation to move crossing to make it safer Grant Granger
ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com
A solution to a “dangerous crosswalk” has been rejected by New Westminster city council. The city’s engineering staff recommended the pedestrian and cyclist crossing on McBride Boulevard and Columbia Street be realigned. But that option was defeated in a narrow vote because it would have meant the removal of three metres of the Woodlands heritage stone Coun. lorrie williams wall. i don’t want to see any The of the wall taken down, crosswalk thank you very much. is located up the hill from the intersection. City staff recommended it be moved to the corner to make pedestrians and cyclists more visible to drivers turning right off Columbia. Many turn on red lights even though it is illegal. However, moving it to the corner would have required pedestrians and cyclists traverse a steep incline to connect to the Central Valley Greenway above the wall. So staff recommended a three-metre portion be cut out of the wall to decrease the degree of difficulty. That solution was not acceptable to some councillors. “I don’t want to see any of the wall taken down, thank you very much,” said Coun. Lorrie Williams.

BE COYOTE AWARE THIS SPRING TRAVEL SHOWS AT THE LIBRARY The New Westminster Public Library travel shows will take a trip to Guatemala in May. Join Reverend Emilie Smith as she shows her photographs of this Central American country. Currently parish priest of St Barnabas Anglican Church in New Westminster, she lived in Guatemala for four years where she worked with communities healing from the 36-year war. Rev. Smith will show her photos on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30 pm.
Spring is denning season for coyotes living in the Vancouver area. Coyotes build their dens in concealed locations like secluded parts of parks, behind thick blackberry bushes, and if given the opportunity, underneath abandoned buildings. With new pups to protect, coyotes may become aggressive if approached near denning sites for the next couple of months. If you come across an active den site or notice coyote pups, please report it to the coyote information phone line, 604-681-WILD, and avoid the area. Please also keep dogs on leash in and around parks, as curiosity can lead to unnecessary conflicts between coyotes and pets.
PUBLIC LIBRARY APP NOW AVAILABLE
It is also advised to remove potential coyote attractants from yards and parks. Garbage, yard fruit, bird feeders and pet food will attract opportunistic coyotes. From April to July, young coyotes will be learning the skills they need to survive in the city. By reducing attractants, coyotes will learn to hunt for their own favourite food, small rodents such as mice and rats, rather than learning to depend on people for food.
Access the New Westminster Public Library’s catalogue from your mobile device!
For more information or to report a coyote sighting or den site, please call 604-681-WILD.
The travel shows are co-sponsored by the Library and the University Women’s Club of New Westminster and held in the Library’s auditorium at 716 6th Avenue in New Westminster.

Controversial art gets green light Council approves Biennale projects including ‘old, rusted containers’ piece Grant Granger
ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com
Get ready New Westminster for four big, rusty transport containers sticking out of Westminster Pier Park. Or be prepared to be wowed by an intriguing piece of public art. It’s up to the eye of the beholder to determine which statement is true. Like it or not, the work— Wow New Westminster— will soon grace the city’s riverfront. Council approved the piece by Brazilian artist Jose Resende on Monday. It will be one of three works from the Vancouver Biennale society. Two of them, Blue Trees and Public Furniture/Urban trees, will stay in New West for two years. But Wow New Westminster is a legacy for the city to keep. The decision came after extensive discussion at the council table and in the community. Opinions were many and varied. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy couldn’t make up his mind so he solicited opinions on Facebook and got 30 responses. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had so much input on any decision,” said McEvoy. “I think there is such a thing as bad art ... I have a divided opinion about this. I don’t

people who don’t like the Mona Lisa and it’s supposed to be one of the greatest pieces of art in the world.” She also believes there should be more use of local artists for the city’s public art. “But I don’t think we should shut the door on international art.” Coun. Betty McIntosh also had reservations. But the more questions she got answered the more comfortable she was. “I think this is an opportunity to be a city to be looked at in the whole region,” said McIntosh. “This is quite a cost effective way to get public art. Public art is not cheap, it is quite expensive no matter what you do.” Architect Eric Pattison gave his support to council as a member of the public art advisory committee. He said the Brazilian curator the Biennale hired was “flabbergasted by the site” with all its movement of people, trucks, trains and the river. “He thought they needed something that spoke to the robustness of the site,” said Pattison. “That’s what it’s all about, getting people talking … On some level they’re all going to be controversial to somebody.” The containers are scheduled to be installed in the fall. But Gibson said Biennale officials were open to changing that date so it doesn’t conflict with the Wait For Me Daddy sculpture expected to be unveiled in October.
River Market hands out ONE prizes A hammer and saw doesn’t cost $2,000, but the Hammer and Saw project is worth spending $2,000 on for Donald’s Market and River Market. The project is one of three to receive the amount from the markets’ ONE Prize community fund for New Westminster. One per cent of items purchased by Donald’s customers signed up as ONE members went into the fund which raised $6,000 this year. Three projects out of 19 submitted emerged as winners. Hammer and Saw: Youth Building Community was started by two technical education teachers. Ten New Westminster kids will design and build a project for the community. Another $2,000 was awarded to the Seniors Services Society for its Seniors Out N’ About program. It aims to prevent senior isolation with organized outings. The third award went to the Royal City Farmers Market to set up a shuttle program for seniors to get to its weekly market this summer.

Drivers cannot see people crossing that intersection.” He disagreed that bigger signs or flashing lights would fix the problem. He also rejected council’s decision to explore other options. “In my opinion it was a motion to look like we were doing something when we’re not,” Coté said Wednesday. Sapperton resident Vince Kreiser uses the crosswalk on a regular basis. He originally brought the problem to council’s attention and was happy with the staff recommendation. He was not happy it was rejected. “I hate to say it, somebody’s going to get hurt before they do something. That’s unfortunate. It’s too bad but what are you going to do?” said Kreiser. “I’m frustrated with the whole process.”

When they got there they found evidence someone had been inside but had fled the scene. Shane Harold Davidson, 41, was arrested following an investigation and is charged with break and enter. Moody Park top priority for new off-leash area Grant Granger
ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com
Moody Park will be a top priority in the new dog off-leash management plan adopted by New Westminster council Monday. “I’m pleased to see that Moody Park has been given some priority,” said Coun. Chuck Puchmayr. He said there are many seniors in the area who don’t have a car and have pets that need to get some exercise. “I’m a little disappointed it’s been this far down the road that we’re beginning the consultation process,” he added. The city will establish a consultation process to plan an off-leash area for Moody Park. The city had requests to add off-leash areas in Grimston Park, Sullivan Park, Simcoe Park, Victoria Hill, Port Royal and Glenbrook Ravine. But city staff recommended “an off leash area in Moody Park continue to be the number one priority area.” Last November, New Westminster’s parks and recreation committee balked at having an area in Moody Park that wasn’t fenced.
“I originally opposed it because it was in the south end of the park and that’s one of the few urban forests in the city,” said Coun. Bill Harper. “I support it as long as they don’t have
it on the south side of the path.” New Westminster currently has seven off-leash areas. The new management plan includes a recommendation
to upgrade existing areas with trees, water, benches, garbage bins, signs, and natural amenities such as boulders and logs for the dogs to play on. The city will look at

Innoculating against idiocy The pronouncement this week from the World Health Organization that the spread of polio is an “international health emergency” must come as blow to local Rotarians, who have led the fight to eradicate the disease. Polio, by any measure, is horrible. Those it does not kill are left crippled or horribly contorted. For most of us, polio is a disease of the past, like typhus or cholera. But it wasn’t that long ago that the threat of polio gripped this country. Only a few years ago Rotary Club International, thanks to a massive donation by the Gates Foundation, was predicting the worldwide eradication of the disease in our lifetime. But ignorance is a powerful force. Rather than welcome a tool that could protect their children, the ignorant, angry and fanatical see some devious threat. In countries like Pakistan and Sudan aid workers risk their own lives to vaccinate the innocent. It’s a reminder that while we can vaccinate against a disease, an inoculation against idiocy is still a long way off. —Chilliwack Progress
NEW WESTMINSTER
What to do about all these hills? New West residents took their neighbours on 12 Jane’s Walks last weekend, another confirmation that we love walking and exploring our city. We’re blessed that many destinations can be easily reached on foot, by bike or by bus. The problem, of course, is our bloody hills. Think 10th Street hill coming up from Columbia Square. Or Queens Avenue between 11th and 10th streets. Might as well call them Thigh Busters 1 and 2. So is there something we can do to help people travel under their own steam around town, particularly between Downtown and Uptown? After all, the more we get around without a car, the more vibrant our streets will be. And the more healthy and happy we’ll be. These hills don’t daunt fit, young people. But what of the rest of us? City social planner John Stark has looked at the problem from the perspective of seniors and people with disabilities. A few years ago, he led a “wheelability” assessment to look at what it’s like to get around the Royal City when you use things like wheelchairs,

scooters and walking sticks. The study included “walkabouts” with the people affected, to see the obstacles first hand. It has led to strategic investments in better sidewalks, curb cuts, and “wheelability maps” for Uptown and Downtown, to help folks avoid the steepest grades. Stark even heard about a couple of seniors who’d enter Douglas College off Eighth Street, and take the elevator to an upper floor for more level access to Royal Avenue. Some use zig-zag routes, finding more gradual grades to travel, even if the distance is longer. They can take a bus, of course. And when it comes to transit, our city is well served. Buses go up the Second, Sixth, Eighth and 12th street hills on a regular basis. Most stops—83 per cent— are fully accessible. And to make it easier—particularly for those on a fixed income making only a small trip—the city is urging

TransLink to create a reducedfare zone in the central city. Another city planner, Mark Allison, says there’s a good case to be made. Just jump on a crowded bus leaving New Westminster SkyTrain station and before it leaves the city limits it will be almost empty, he says. “Between Uptown and Downtown there is a lot of traffic.” I’m partial to a streetcar—the modern kind—running up Sixth Street, along Sixth Avenue and down Eighth Street to Columbia. A dream for another day. Just as likely is residents embracing an idea pitched to the city by the Austrian company Doppelmayr —a gondola up Sixth Street. These hills are daunting to cyclists, too—even the fit ones. When he commuted to New West from Surrey, Allison had a friend show him a route from the Pattullo to “tack” up our hills. In San Francisco—a city famous for hills, yet one of the top-five cycling cities in the U.S.—they’ve actually formalized one tacking route, called The Wiggle. For cyclists travelling from Market Street to Golden Gate Park, the one-mile Wiggle stitches together a combination

of bike routes with helpful wayfinding signs. One fanciful option discussed here and also in the City of North Van is a bike escalator. A likely location is a stretch of 320 metres on Fourth Street between Columbia and Royal. Marion Orser likes the idea. She’s in her 70s and has used her bike to get around for years. She thinks the “cyclocable,” as the escalator’s called, could make the Downtown-Uptown cycle easily managed, and would be a great tourist draw to boot. Meantime, as we seek ways to ease the climb, we can also celebrate these darned hills. World over, people are taking a fresh look at the vast amount of space we set aside for cars. Perhaps one day we’ll re-purpose a steep street as an urban cycling/walking path. Install seating along the way to rest, chat, and enjoy the views. We might wind the path to ease the grade. Plant trees and flowers. Might as well enjoy it. After all, these hills aren’t going anywhere. Chris Bryan is editor of the NewsLeader.

Residents of Downtown New Westminster got an up close look at the filming of Godzilla last year. Now they’ll get a first look at the film. An advance screening of the flick will be at the Landmark Cinemas at Shops at New West on Wednesday, May 14, 7 p.m. The showing is two days before it officially opens worldwide. Question OF THE WEEK:
Driveway editor Keith Morgan writes today about how a 3-day rally along picturesque B.C. roads turned him to the idea of a B.C. summer ‘staycation’. Will you do a road trip holiday though B.C. this year, and if so where to? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer.
?
QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
Safety Tip: As the weather continues to get warmer, drivers should expect to share the road with more motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. When turning at an intersection, use extra caution and look out for these other road users to help keep our roads safe.
